Over a week since his arrival at Telgar Weyr saw Chironhes finally allowed to resume "gentle" movements of his right arm. The healers had squabbled some over the decision but ultimately elected to remove his sling with an exchanged promise that he would not do anything too strenuous. His side would require another week yet of repeated bandage changes, but it, too, was well on its way to improvement. In celebration, Sironar had promised him a surprise.

The last thing Chir expected was to be handed an egg that required two hands to cradle when Siro led him to a different set of stables than what housed the horses. He blinked down in awed surprise at being told it was a fire lizard of his own, touched that his roommate would take the step for him just from knowing his interest in Fancy.

Now, tucked back in their room with the egg carefully cradled in a bowl of heated sand, Chir stared with genuine fondness. Beneath his hand where it rested along the egg's surface, the freckled teen could feel movement inside. It fluttered like a bird or a nervous heartbeat, encouraging more tenderness from the hunter.

Finally turning from the egg, the youth lightly tapped his fingers on his desk twice. Yes, yes, he was listening. He could admire the egg at the same time as listening to Sironar's instructions!

"Hey are you even paying attention?" Sironar wanted to frown, but the look on his roommate's face as he fawned over a silly green firelizard egg just elicited a soft chuckle instead as he shook his head. At least he got two taps out of him to indicate he was paying attention. Fancy was perched nearby, watching curiously as he gave a soft little humming noise that heralded the new arrival. "Dragons do that too, by the way. When the eggs are going to hatch on the sands they start humming so everyone knows to show up. Now, uh... where did I put that oil."

He got up and found the little jar he'd gotten just for Chir, and the spare rag he'd found and set them down near the egg and the bowl of meat. "Okay, the first thing you'll want to do is feed her as soon as she hatched. Feed her, let her see it's you, she'll make eye contact and you'll just... know. She'll probably just be super hungry though so give her as much as she wants. I'll be holding onto Fancy once she starts breaking out so that he can't accidentally help at all. After that you'll want to get her oiled up. I'll oil Fancy up at the same time so you can just watch how I do it okay? And remember, these are firelizards, not baby dragons." Siro had gotten a bit of a laugh when he first figured out that Chir thought Fancy was a baby dragon, but he didn't really blame the boy for his confusion, it was probably just some holdfolk thing.

There was a sudden little crackle and he spotted the first dark line form on the egg's shell. "Okay, keep an eye on it, remember the meat." Siro gave the quick reminder and then reached over to grab hold of Fancy, pulling him back to sit on his lap where he could still get some view without being too close or in the way. "Come on, Fancy, you'll have plenty of time to meet the new baby after Chir gets her settled in."

Chir glanced at Fancy as he hummed and even tried to mimic the sound with a single toned sound of his own. It was nowhere near as musical in quality and lacked any smooth ups and downs, the ability taken from him early on. But he grinned when the fire lizard peered up at him only to dart out of reach. One day, he vowed, he'd earn the baby dragon's trust! Though Siro had informed him that Fancy wasn't really a baby dragon and seemed determined to remind him often, Chir insisted on considering just Fancy as that simply out of fondness.

At Siro's additional reminder for him not to forget to be ready to feed his new pet, Chir nodded and grabbed a cubed slice of wherry meat at the first crack in the vibrant shell in front of him.

In his time back in the forests around Lemos, the hunter had observed more than a few birds hatching. He expected it to be a slow process after the first pip through, but fire lizards were a whole other species and proved it through the hatching. That first knock and crack had been a test and was shortly followed by a toss of the dragonlet's head that sent a large piece of shell skittering wildly across the desk.

She thrust her head through the opening and immediately let out a series of plaintive chirps and trills to demand her prize for hatching. Chir's grin couldn't grow any wider as he offered the first piece of meat. The little fire lizard ripped it from his fingers viciously and swallowed it down in no time. Already, she was looking for more. Steadily, the boy offered her as much as she could take until her belly was so pudgy that she practically rolled out of the remainder of her egg to sprawl along the warm sand that had served as a nest.

Reaching out a gentle hand without more meat since she'd clearly filled herself close to bursting, Chir waited for the fire lizard to assess him and determine whether she wanted anything to do with him or not. He'd not force her if she decided otherwise. But much to his relief, she sniffed at his fingers and lay her tiny head across them as if to grant him the gift of scratching her chin. More than pleased with the opportunity, he did just that while admiring the pretty green of her hide. The tips of her wings and legs seemed speckled with darker tones as if covered in moss while the rest of her resembled the pods of pea plants.

The little one began chirping again when Chir pulled his hand away as if protesting his removal of her pillow. Heart full, the teen used both hands to gingerly pull her into his lap where she quickly circled and settled to sleep off her enormous meal, apparently satisfied with her accommodations.

Chir lifted his hand to palm away the embarrassing sting of tears as he stared down at her. She was precious! How could anyone not get emotional to have such a beautiful creature choose them? Still, not wanting Siro to poke fun about it, the boy quickly reached over for the rag and applied the oil as his roommate had directed. Watching as Siro did the same for Fancy, he smoothed the oiled rag across her hide to help clean her of lingering film from her egg as well as any shards that clung to her smooth skin.

Sironar patiently waited for Chir to finish impressing the little green, hands still on Fancy as he commanded the lizard to stay for the moment. The blue let out a small frustrated chirp, but obediently settled down and enjoyed the gentle petting he was at least getting while he was there. There was a small amount of jealousy from the firelizard, but Siro wasn't quite sure if it was directed at the newly hatched green for getting attention and food, or at Chir for paying attention to a different firelizard for once. With a soft chuckle he gave Fancy another light scratch under his chin and then cleared his throat. "She's cute. So you're going to stick with Chirp for her?"

He grabbed onto his oil and adjusted where he was sitting so that Fancy could get a better look at the new baby, stretching out as far as he could to get closer while still technically staying at least partially on his master's lap as he'd been told. Siro just rolled his eyes and oiled up the rag to start demonstrating. "You'll need to oil her a lot while she's young and growing. They don't grow as quickly as dragons, but quick enough that it's good to keep up with. If you get a feeling that you're itchy somewhere but can't actually fix it, it might just be her trying to let you know she's itchy and needs more. I can try to get her used to what her name sounds like aloud for you, but if you just try to think as clearly as you can it'll eventually work the same as she gets older and learns.

Fancy gave a soft plaintive chirp, tail wrapping around Siro's wrist so he could get his nose to almost poking distance of Chir's little companion. "Fancy, come back here. You can meet her later." With a quick roll of his eyes he added, "You might actually be able to touch him this time, Chir, if you wanted to sneak a pet in. He's too distracted to run right I think." Though of course as soon as he said it aloud the blue withdrew and circled around to perch on Siro's other side for his oiling.

"Or not." After a quick adjustment to finish up oiling Fancy, he turned his attention back to Chir. "Too bad you can't teach her to talk for you. That would have been handy. We can work on other tricks later though. Maybe we can take her and Fancy hiking later."

Chir gave a confident nod to Sironar when he asked if he was going to keep the name. Chirp was one of several they'd come up with together and he found it suited the little fire lizard considering it was the first sound she'd made upon hatching. Even now, she let out little purrs and chirps as she snoozed, clearly content while he ran the oiled rag in his hand over her body.

He glanced over as Siro pointed out he could maybe pet Fancy now, but true to form, the blue fire lizard scampered out of reach, earning Chir's snort of amusement. One day! Though, now with Chirp in his life, he felt far less inclined to put as much effort into the endeavor. What if she got jealous?!

It was hard to disagree with Siro's point on it being a shame he couldn't have her speak for him. But there were plenty of dragons around and most of them had been polite in translating for him so far. But she was also a newly hatched baby! Putting any expectations on her was already too much.

The idea of a hike, later on, perked him up though. Chir had spent so much of his time within the Weyr that he was eager to get back into nature. Already, he could see his new friend hitching a ride on his shoulders or investigating her way into fallen trees or rooting through fox sets. But no hunting on this trip. He didn't even need the reminder when he could so easily bring up the image of Siro passing out in the baths. Still, he'd bring his knife along just in case. The last thing they needed was to be caught by a wherry unawares with no means to defend themselves. There'd be a lot more blood for Siro to handle without one.

"Chirp, huh? Hear that little thing? That's your name. Chirp." It was probably silly to bother trying to talk to the firelizard so soon, but Sironar made the effort anyway, trying to be some sort of encouraging focal point for both Chir and his new flitter. "My brother used to talk to the flitters all the time. He said it would help them learn how to better understand us or something. I don't know if he was just full of shit or not, but he taught Mossface to to be really good at delivering messages even though some people think greens are bad at it."

Fancy gave him a small headbutt for attention and Siro gave the flitter a fond pet to the head. "It's too early to really do any difficult training with her, but if you have an idea for what you'll want her to do you can start planting some... uh... foundations I guess." He could only imagine his dad kicking in the door, talking about how those were plantations not foundations. "Like fetching things can be useful, so when you want something, just try to think a really clear picture of it, including the desire that you want it, and then go grab it. She'll get used to seeing that happen, be used to the idea that when you want a specific thing you get it, and then you can work on getting her to get things for you. For letters I think about what I'm sending and who's going to get it. But we'll need to work on your reading and writing first for that."

He tried to think of other useful flitter tricks he'd seen people use. "Oh, uh, Zory, he's a candidate in Ista, one of K'dar and T'ryn's brothers, he taught his flitter to help find people when he gets lost. I can't take him anywhere on a hike or he'll wander off." There were more he was sure of it, but he couldn't think of any off the top of his head other than a harper he'd seen with a firelizard that helped him do magic tricks. Siro didn't think that was really relevant though so he didn't bother to bring it up. "I wonder if you could teach her hand signs. I bet it would be easy."

Chirp didn’t seem all that keen to hear her name considering the way she slanted one eye open at Sironar before dozing off again. Chir snorted his amusement and gently rubbed his finger beneath the fire lizard’s chin with affection. It’s alright, Chirp. We’ve got time, don’t we? I bet Taith would be excited to meet you. That’s how I thought of your name, you know. He thought my name sounded close to Chirp and he liked it. The hunter wasn’t all that certain she could hear him or was even listening if she could, but it didn’t stop his steady flow of consciousness.

So when Siro suggested him thinking of pictures for her as images were easier to understand, Chir had no trouble at all doing just that. He didn’t have any true expectations of her. All he knew was that it would be nice to have someone around all the time who wouldn’t be bothered or inconvenienced by his muteness. He pictured her just as she was; curled up and content like a mouser lounging on a favored person. As long as she was safe and happy, he was happy.

Still, he didn’t discount any of Siri’s suggestions, filing them away for later. Maybe letter delivery would be helpful. If he ever got the hang of it. Admittedly, Chir struggled greatly with what little penmanship they’d worked on so far, and practicing made him feel…stupid, so he simply avoided it whenever Siro wasn’t actively pushing him to work on it. He did try to pay attention though. It was just so much! There were so many rules to it al and it didn’t come as innately to him as working with his hands. But he’d keep at it. Siro deserved that much for all the patience he had with him so far.

As he continued to stroke Chirp, the hunter tilted his head and tried clicking his tongue and squeaking his lips to mimic the fire lizard’s sounds. She woke quickly and tilted her head curiously at him when he managed a sound close to the first sound she’d made, and was rewarded by her scrambling up his chest with her needle-like claws as she found a new perch on his shoulder where she could trill directly into his ear to her heart’s content. Chir grinned and leaned away to try to escape the noise without success, only encouraging her excited antics when he repeated the sound.

Snickering, he pointed at her and signed an “okay” gesture at Sironar. I think she liked it.

Sironar couldn't help but laugh a little bit as the firelizard climbed up excitedly in response to the noises his roommate was making. "You can try thinking about how loud she is," he said in amusement as he watched the boy try to tilt his head further and further away from the chirps and trills in his ear, "Or how nice something quiet might be. I'm not sure if any of that would really help though, she's still quite small after all."

He returned the gesture at Chir with a grin. "She certainly seems to be quite chatty." From his perch on Siro's lap, Fancy started to crane his neck towards the little green again before letting out a plaintive little trill and chirp of his own. He wanted to see the new baby green so badly that Sironar relaxed his grip just slightly. The blue took his opportunity to slip away, reaching over to gingerly set his front claw down on Chir while he stretched his nose towards the tiny firelizard. He let out a soft chirp followed by a whistle as he tried to get her attention.

"Fancy, just be careful," Siro wasn't sure what was going to happen, but with how tiny Chirp was he didn't want his Fancy Lad to accidentally hurt her. The thought made the blue turn and give him an offended little squeak before he turned his attention right back to the little green. Siro caught a brief image of food from his lizard and realized he was tempted to go steal and offer her some, but gave the lizard a firm and silent no that elicited another plaintive objecting squeak. He just wanted to make friends, but Siro didn't want to risk anything happening with Chir's bond, even if he was sure that was already set from how the little green was cuddling him.

Content that at least Fancy wasn't going to get into too much trouble, Siro rolled his eyes a bit as he watched the lizard and finally got up. "Here, I'm just going to sit closer so that he doesn't accidentally fall or something." He grabbed Fancy and moved to sit directly next to his roommate, the blue flitter scrambling immediately up and onto his boy's shoulder so that he could be as close as possible without being on Chir directly. "I'm hoping he's just curious about her and won't try to get too possessive when she eventually has a flight."

It would have been wiser to follow Siri’s advice and try to calm down the excitable hatchling, but all Chir could do was laugh and project joy to Chirp, encouraging her more. When it became too much, he reached up to pet the little green fire lizard until she settled. Of course, Fancy got her riled again when he started chirping back at her. Chirp twisted around to sniff curiously in his direction but didn’t stretch out to bump noses with him just yet.

But when Siro shifted to sit closer, Chir watched with amusement as Chrip finally elected to stretch her own neck out in greeting to Fancy. The boy marveled at how tiny she was, her head dwarfed by the blue firelizard’s when she bumped her snout against his. Chirp trilled and cooed, the sounds quieter now.

Chir sensed curiosity and a spark of mischief right before Chirp nipped at Fancy’s chin only to follow it up with a series of acrobatics around her bonded’s shoulders before climbing up his head to settle in Chir’s curls. From her new perch, she observed Fancy with her tail flicking back and forth as if preparing to pounce.

Are you being kind? he wondered, amused when she bent her neck to stare at him upside down. She was too cute.

Chirp looked back to Fancy again and slipped from Chir’s head to balance on his shoulder again where she nose-bumped Fancy instead of nipping. Pleased with the change, his chest filled with pride. She was a real delight.

Fancy tolerated the chin nip rather well, though Sironar had been worried for a moment that it would encourage him to try and play a bit roughly. Instead the blue let out a soft huff and flopped down dramatically as if he'd been slain, half hanging off of his shoulder perch with only his tail really anchoring him. When a follow-up attack didn't come, Fancy pulled himself back up so that he could go back to looking mostly dignified as he watched the tiny green curiously.

When she finally came down to offer a nose book he let out a please chirp and gave her a gentle nudge and nuzzle back before returning to his own boy to comfortably curl up around Siro's neck. "I guess he just really wanted to meet her. If she weren't on your shoulder he might even try to cuddle her a little, but don't worry about his feelings. He's just ridiculous." Still, he reached up to give his flitter a fond pat. "At least they get along."

Forgetting that he'd moved to Chir's bed, or that the bed even had a proper owner since he had used it for the longest time as a softer table, Siro flopped backwards, sending Fancy skittering up to rest on his chest rather than get crushed. "I'm glad you like your new flitter, Chir, but I think I might nap for a bit. Just let me know if you need me to help with anything okay? And don't forget your writing practice later. If you can at least write down your name and Chirp's name neatly enough I'll show you the best strawberry patch later."

It seemed a flimsy method of motivation, but that was fine, it didn't require that much effort. "It'll be fun, I can show you around to the best spots... she can look at all the things..." he drifted off to his nap before he'd even finished his sentence.

Seeing Fancy show any side other than defiantly dignified was a new one for Chir, and made him feel all the more fond towards the blue firelizard. That he specifically altered his behavior to encourage Chirp to play was even better. Chir couldn’t help but agree with Sironar’s sentiment. It was a relief that they got along so well. To have a pair at each other’s throats would undoubtedly lead to excessive strain.

As soon as Siro flopped back on his bed, the hunter snorted. He still didn’t consider the bed really his yet; it was merely a place he was sleeping, so he took no offense when his roommate laid claim and drifted off to sleep.

Now was as good a time as any to practice his writing. Standing up with Chirp still balanced on his shoulders, Chir moved over to his desk and tugged the notebook he’d been using to practice his lessons with Siro. The teen sighed as he began writing out the alphabet. This part, at least, he had practiced enough that he knew it with a good deal of confidence without needing Siro to double check his each written letter. Next, he worked on the few words he’d learned.

Yes, no, stop, go, horse, dragon, Weyr, Hold, water, forest, tree, rider, mate. His own name still gave him some difficulty, though he’d managed the shortened aspect of it. Chir. He hesitated, eyes closed as he said it in his head. Chiron…ess? No, that was definitely wrong. He scratched it out and retried. Chironhes. Yes, that was it. And now for Chirp! Chir grinned to himself. Easy! It was his own shortened name with an added sound. Well, a different sound. Writing, Chir was learning, didn’t always agree with sounds. Otherwise, his shortened name would have been spelled as Cheer. But Chir plus a p! Chirp.

The boy tapped on the paper with his pen and glanced at Chirp who was staring down at his writings with interest. See? That right there is your name. Do you like it?

The green flitter tilted her head back and forth before opening her tiny mouth in a yawn and flopping across his shoulders for a snooze.

I’ll take that as a yes.

Left with his own company now, Chir went back to practicing, this time working to sound out names of those he’d met and their dragons. Though he had no real talent for it, his mind wandered and he started scribbling out sketches of poorly drawn dragons while Siro slept.
