Aili had gone to bed early, still humming with warm fuzzies after the fuss R’nya and Rhaedalyn had made of it being her birthday. While Aili had never been ignored on her birthday, they were never much more than a kiss from her mother, a smile from her father, and maybe a special meal at dinner time. They simply didn’t have the time to throw full-fledged parties like Aili had heard they had for the high ranking Lords and Ladies when they had birthdays, or weddings, or any reason the upper class seemed to find for drinking and dancing and showing off how much money they had. It seemed, to some degree to Aili, that the Weyrfolk weren’t all that far removed from them. Aili had been given mulled wine that Rhaedalyn had made mild so she and the children could drink it. She’s been presented with a birthday cake that Rhaedalyn herself had made (Aili had been beyond delighted) and the pair (and their army of daughters) had presented her with a firelizard egg.

To say Aili had been rendered speechless would have been an understatement, even for the usually quiet girl. She’s burst into tears – happy ones – and repeatedly thanked the couple for their generosity and kindness. R’nya had been as stoic as ever, but Rhaedalyn wasn’t above being emotional and Aili found that special, because she was so used to her mother telling her off when she displayed too much emotion; ladies were supposed to be reserved and demure and not cause a scene. Crying or laughing loudly caused scenes. Aili had spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening hugging the small clay pot that was filled with hot sands from the Hatching Grounds, with her little egg cradled protectively inside.

When Aili had called it a night, she’d made her way back to her weyr to find that the fire was still going, and she banked it, watching the sparks flare up and then catch on the fresh wood. Setting her little clay pot down beside it, where it would keep warm for the night, she’d made her way off to bathe, brush her teeth, and pull on her pyjamas before falling into bed in exhaustion. Which was why, when she awoke a handful of hours later, she was bewildered. Suddenly, from the middle of a peaceful dream, she’d found herself wide awake. A frown pulled her brows together, and Aili sighed as she got up, figuring she needed to go to the bathroom and her brain just hadn’t clicked to the fact that she needed to pee.

The stone floor was freezing on her bare feet, and Aili paused to pull on some socks, and a pair of shoes. She could use the chamber pot that was in her room for such things, but Aili disliked cleaning it, and would rather the cold walk down the hall to the public bathroom. Wrapping her arms around herself, she made her way out of her room, glancing towards the fire as she passed to make sure it was still keeping the egg warm. She paused, blinking, not realising what she was seeing for a moment. Her frown reappeared, and she crept closer to the egg, eyes widening suddenly when she realised it was not shadows that were decorating the little shell, but cracks.

“Oh!” she gasped, dropping her folded arms to pick up the clay pot, bringing it up close to her face. “Oh!” This one was a breathy sigh of excitement. Her egg was hatching! She was going to have her firelizard the day after her birthday! She beamed down at it. It took a few more minutes for the instructions she’d been given to make themselves known to her, and she glanced around wildly. She needed oil for the little lizard’s hide… Oh and food! What was she going to feed it! It needed to eat, or it would leave her! Suddenly horrified, Aili glanced around desperately again, though she knew she had neither food nor oil in her little room. She didn’t have a full weyr, since she was a Candidate, and would hopefully be moving into a weyr with a dragon in the future. She was too shy to join the Candidate Barracks, which was why R’nya had organised for her to have a room near their weyr.

Hugging the clay pot to her chest, Aili trotted out of her room, looked left and right, and then darted down the halls to take the shortcut Rhaedalyn had taught her to get quickly from the Weyrleader’s Wing to the Kitchens. She didn’t see anyone as she made her way down there, but the little one inside the egg was starting to really fight for their freedom. A nose almost poked out, and Aili gasped as she darted, finally, into the kitchens. They were lit with low lights, to cater to those who came by in the wee hours when everyone else was sleeping. She glanced around – no one was there that she could see – and she made her way to one of the cooking fires. There was a large pot hanging over it, and she could tell it had been left to simmer.

Peering into the large pot, Aili was disappointed to find it was filled with porridge. That wouldn’t do at all. Rhaedalyn had said the little firelizard would want meat, not grains. There wasn’t even anything in it yet, to make it tasty, like fruits or something. It was obviously being prepared for the morning’s breakfast. Turning away from the pot in disappointment, Aili spotted what was left of a roast, and flashed a smile, glancing down at the egg before looking around for a knife. Spotting one not far from the haunch, Aili set the clay pot down on the table near the meat, and collected the knife; she set about hacking off a few pieces, glancing anxiously at the ferociously wobbling egg – which was now making squeaks and grunts as the baby worked to escape – hoping she’d be able to have enough before the little one got its head out.

Despite the late hour, N'lis was starving and quietly made his way down to the kitchens, knowing they would be empty or near enough to it that he wouldn't be a bother. Since Jammerith's Flight where Pharralath did some damage to other dragons and the gossip mill was on fire with stories, he'd done his best to avoid large crowds. Thanks to his name being similar to V'lis, some people thought he was the rider of the aggressive brown. And then rumours about V'lis himself came around again and then people thought he was the horrible human being. Not everyone made that mistake, but it was enough that when he was going to dine alone, he skipped the meal all together.

Now he was becoming a creature of the night, quietly sitting in the barely lit room, purposely selecting the stool off to the side and out of the way that cooks used when they could sit for a few minutes. Depending on who worked late, a plate was sometimes left beside a low burning fire for him, sometimes he just helped himself to leftover stew. Tonight he had a plate that was filled with mashed potatoes, carrots, and some meat. No gravy, but that was fine. He wasn't going to be picky when he wasn't eating at the proper hours.

He froze when he heard someone frantically enter the room and started to give a little wave when he thought he was spotted but the girl didn't seem to see him in the shadows. Or she was distracted too much by the pot she held. He knew the shape well, despite not having one of his own and gave a little smile. He was about to watch someone Impress to their firelizard and it seemed they were in need of food given the way the girl now hacked at the meat. He wanted to help but knew calling out would startle her. Then again, if he stayed still and quiet and she suddenly did spot him, not only would she be scared but he was now also creepy. So he called out.

"Here. I didn't eat the meat yet so you can use it for your firelizard," N'lis stood and took a step forward, more into the light so he could be seen and assessed as nothing close to a threat. With an embarrassed little grin, he set his plate down near the wobbling pot and took a couple of steps back. He didn't want to further scare the girl nor did he want to Impress her firelizard accidentally.

To say the sudden sound of someone speaking behind her startled Aili would be the understatement of the night; she left the ground with a soft shriek, dropping the meat she had managed to hack off, and the knife with a clutter. The girl spun around, her hands flying to her chest and her eyes wide as they gazed around for the person who had spoken, and finally settled on the tall young man stepping out of the shadows. She watched him, still with the wide-eyed expression, as he pushed a plate of meat towards her and then retreated a little. Aili, trembling slightly from the fright, lowered her hands a little – then remembered she was most unseemly, dressed only in her nightgown – and her hands jerked back to her chest, clasped together and held just below her collarbone.

“Thank you,” she whispered, even as she blushed with increasing redness as her gaze danced between the wobbling egg, the young man, and back again. Her eyes widened again when a little face suddenly shoved its way out of the egg, mewling in hunger, and her hands darted up to her mouth, stifling her soft squeal of excitement. Forgetting the man across the room for a moment, Aili darted to the edge of the table, and grabbed a slice of meat delicately, offering it to the little nose that was peeking out from the murky earthy toned egg. Neither R’nya nor Rhaedalyn had been sure if it would be a brown or a bronze inside, but Aili didn’t care one way or the other; It was hers!

“Hello little one,” she crooned softly, gasping when the firelizard’s little head darted forward suddenly on a long neck, and snatched the piece of meat from her fingers. It gobbled it down, chewing very little, and her lips formed a little ‘o’ of surprise. It seemed the firelizard had momentarily forgotten its quest to finish Hatching, but Aili didn’t want to risk it breaking free before she’d managed to claim it. As such, she offered the little murky coloured head another slice of meat, and giggled when it gobbled it up again, mewling for more as little claws pushed at the shell, trying to escape. It managed with a sudden cracking sound that was startlingly loud in the quiet of the kitchens, and the firelizard scrambled out of the pot, and as Aili presented another piece of meat, it scrambled out of the pot and onto her hand and up her arm, perching as it gobbled up more meat.

“Oh, you are so precious,” she said gently, giving the little tiny dragon another piece of meat, and gently petting him, stroking her finger down his delicate spine, smiling serenely. Remembering, suddenly, that she hadn’t been alone a few moments ago, Aili looked up, and smiled shyly when she found him still standing there. “I’m Aili,” she said softly, but clearly, and smiled shyly again. She’d been at the Weyr for almost a whole month now, but she’d rarely been out and about, preferring to hide away, mostly exploring the tunnels and paths that made up the deeper areas of the Weyr, when she wasn’t following Rhaedalyn around trying to be helpful.

“Do you know much about firelizards?” she asked softly, turning her gentle expression back on her most amazing birthday present she’d ever gotten, and stroking his little back again as he the firelizard curled up, breathing deeply and apparently sated, as he fell asleep. “Do you think he’s bronze, or brown?” she asked curiously, voice still quiet, and carefully held her forearm out so he could examine the sleeping firelizard. She expected he knew more than she did, since he lived in a Weyr and everything, probably had some of his own, too. She glanced around him, as if expecting a firelizard or two to appear there, then shifted her gaze back to the dark-haired man’s face.

It was really adorable watching a firelizard bond to someone. He couldn’t see too much since a lot of it was still happening in the pot and N’lis wasn’t risking a peek. But he could see the girl’s face and all of the emotions flickering across her features. He was happy that she was and he couldn’t stop smiling as he watched the scene unfold until she had a content firelizard starting to doze along her arm. He let out a little sigh of relief that everything went well. He didn’t end up with it and the little guy hadn’t gone feral. A success all around in his opinion.

When she introduced herself, N’lis tilted his head to the side in thought. It was a familiar name… Was this the girl R’nya had told him about a few days ago? He was fairly certain that was the name he said and she did seem a little shy, like he was also told. But to be fair, anyone would be jumpy and shy with a person stepping out of the shadows when they thought they were alone. But he was being rude by only staring and not saying anything in return so he gave a small smile and introduced himself. “I’m N’lis of blue Dalsuth,” it was still weird to have a full title like that but he was always proud introducing Dalsuth alongside his own name.

“And I don’t know much, sorry to say. I never had one of my own, though I’ve been around some.” Rhaedalyn had three and Muffin at least was a handful. Rumour and Whisper weren’t too bad but he still never did a lot of handling of them himself. They just popped in when they wanted and then left again. N’lis took a couple of small steps toward Aili so he could see the firelizard a bit more clearly. “I do know you should bathe him and oil him soon, though. That might help bring out his colouring more. Daylight will help with that as well.” The dim lighting wasn’t going to help them decide between brown and bronze no matter how much they squinted or slathered oil on him.

“Do you have a name for him?” N’lis wasn’t sure how naming firelizards worked. They weren’t like dragons that told you their name but some people said they got images from the creature about what the name should be. Others simply said they named them something that fit or that they liked and agreed upon. They were tiny and sometimes annoying but they were fascinating little things as well.

Aili studied him, as he studied her, after she’d given her name, though her blush was creeping back up her cheeks when the silence stretched out between them. Finally, he gave her his name, and she mulled it over silently for a few minutes. She’d taken in a lot of names over the past several weeks, and many of them had been accompanied by dragons. It wasn’t until he stepped forward to examine the little firelizard she was still holding up, that she realised he was a lot younger than she had assumed. He was very tall, and didn’t have the gangly look of the teenagers she’d been around back at the Hold, so she had assumed he was well into manhood. But his face was young, and she blinked at him blankly for a moment.

“Oh, right,” she said softly, gaze drifting back to the little mini-dragon that was very much asleep on her arm now. The puzzle of who the bluerider was, however, was pushed aside by the question he posed of her next, and she blinked again before looking up at him in surprise. She had know, but also somehow forgotten, that she would be the one naming the little firelizard that had Hatched and had, thankfully, claimed her as his own. She shook her head slowly, before adding her voice to the action. “No,” she said honestly, on a low tone, and looked back at the firelizard.

What could she call him? Well, at least she knew he was a he, and while she didn’t know if he was bronze or brown yet, she did know he’d be one of those, since he very clearly was not a blue. She didn’t think she wanted to name him after his colour, though. Boulder or Dirt weren’t very attractive names, and he was a very fine little fellow in her opinion. He needed a majestic name, something for him to live up to. A smile suddenly broke over her lips, and she looked up at her companion. “Prince,” she said, thinking of the young men that often swept in to save the day in the fun stories she usually read. It was a suitably regal name, she felt, and would give him all the confidence he might ever need.

With a name decided upon, Aili was able to go back to the previous puzzle of who N’lis was; it came to her in a sudden rush, and she flicked her gaze back up to him, curiosity clear on her features, despite the dim lighting. “You’re R’nya’s son!” she said brightly, her voice still pitched low so as not to startle the firelizard or echo in the otherwise quietness of the empty kitchen. “Rhaedalyn said I just missed meeting you the other day. He Searched me, too,” she lifted her chin a little, smiling a little proudly. She was excited to be at the Weyr, and to hopefully Impress. Rhaedalyn had even suggested she sign up to learn how to be a Healer, and R’nya had encouraged that as well. Aili wasn’t sure she’d make a very good healer, but she was willing to try!

N’lis smiled again as the name was decided upon. If she wasn’t the girl that R’nya and Rhaedalyn had taken in, then she was coincidentally similar to their Weyrwoman. But he supposed it was a good name for a bronze or brown firelizard, though he hoped it was of a gentler demeanour and not one of the villainous princes in Rhaedalyn’s stories. She didn’t have too many of those ones, come to think of it, but Aradissicath did. The gold dragon was amused by romantic tales but she seemed to prefer ones of great adventure, mystery, and deception so she had characters you couldn’t always trust. He missed her stories and made a mental note to see if she would still let him sit in on story times now that he was a full grown dragonrider and, in theory, an adult.

Aili’s sudden outburst startled N’lis, making him visibly jump and then flush with embarrassment over the statement. “I’m not…I am, but, I’m not…R’nya is like a dad to me,” he finally settled on, a little smile back in place. R’nya truly had been a father figure to him in his youth and he continued to be a role model since moving to the Weyr. The Weyrleader had done a lot for his family and N’lis wasn’t sure how he would ever be able to properly show his love and gratitude but he would try to be the best son he could be.

At least he now knew he had the right person from what R’nya had told him. “I used to help watch their daughters but then I Impressed and now Varlea and Alyren are old enough to take over. But I still try to visit all of them when they’re not busy, even if it’s just a quick one.” It was hard to do given they were the leaders of the Weyr and always in demand, even when they did delegate. And then they were both happy to see him with M’quel that they encouraged more of his free time be spent with her when her own schedule permitted it. Which wasn’t all that often with her healing duties and multiple lovers. He was slightly more at ease with that—how could he not be? His own mother had been R’nya’s side lover for years and she was now married to another man and still seemed to see R’nya. It was just how Weyrs and maybe life in general worked. It just hurt that he had misunderstood her this entire time. He had been a fool but at least he still got to spend time with her. And as far as he knew, he was her only dark-haired lover so that had to count for something.

He glanced at the plate he had passed over earlier and noted the meat was gone and most of the vegetables as he had started with that before Aili arrived. “If you don’t mind waiting a moment for me to tidy up, I’ll walk you back to your room.” He picked up the plate and went to the little bucket of leftover bits of food that couldn’t be reused in a stew but were kept for the animals or gardens to toss his scraps in. He turned back to his task and then blushed at how he probably sounded too bossy. “I mean, you’ll have Prince to carry and I can carry a plate of meat for later and return the jar for you,” he clarified as he set the plate back down and started carving little bits of meat off the haunch with a deft touch.
