He hadn’t been back to Ista in several months, Shirrikath not quite big enough before but graduated now, old enough that the two of them could do what they wanted. So he’d gone home to visit his family and home to Ista with his brown. Tigger darted to and fro as he walked along the bowl with what could only be assumed as a mission. It wasn’t really, he had an idea of visiting a few friends he’d made while living here but D’io had a look of concentration on his face as he walked.

Some people lifted hands in waves that he returned and a few nods here and there. He was always good at making friends even if he’d been shy for most of it. He grinned at the slap of confidence Shirrikath swamped his mind with and strode on. Go bother someone else, he told the brown, Maybe you’ll find a new friend here that you can visit with when we come back. A pretty green maybe? the brown asked him with a burble of laughter. As long as it isn’t some dumb gold, the man laughed back.

He was focused enough on Shirrikath that he didn’t see the figure walking towards him as he turned the corner. He didn’t even have time to catch her before she was tumbling to the ground. “Shit!” he said and immediately moved to help her up, “Are you okay? I didn’t see you there.” His face was flushed by the fact that he’d knocked a girl down, his polite nature full of concern for her. “You’re not hurt are you?” he continued as he set her on her feet and started dusting her off.

“I can take you to a healer if you need,” he went on as he moved to make sure she was indeed alright.

After the disastrous incident with trying to read such a terrible book, Ferra had been lying low for the past week. She'd hid from her siblings by going to classes and chores early, worked at them late, and took her meals with her instead of eating them in the dining hall. With any luck her sister would have forgetten all about the ugly incident, and then she could go back to pretending she had never touched such filth in the first place!

This week she was determined to do better. Ferra was going to keep focusing on her studies, and she was going to do something nice for her sister. To that end she'd found some pretty thread in Kalea's favorite color so that she could embroider some flowers onto a nice scrap of soft silky fabric she'd rescued. It would hopefully make a nice little neckerchief once she was done. And, after a talk with a teacher, she was going to try and find a new friend and try to step a little bit out of her comfort zone so that she could hopefully be a more confident person for her dragon, if she ever impressed one.

Though before she could get started on all of that she still had to return the book to the library, which was where she was headed before she took a break to have some lunch. Ferra had been so distraught and mortified that she had ended up taking the book with her when she eventually fled the library. She just had to sneak it back in and put it on the shelf and then-

Then she would end up sprawling on the ground while a large bearded man panicked and apologized. Ferra scrambled for the book she'd dropped, hastily trying to cover it up as the man kept apologizing and pulled her to her feet, trying to brush her clothes off. There was just so much touching and he was just so close, but he seemed to be worried about her for some reason and that just made her more confused and suspicious for a moment as she tried to take a few awkward steps away from him. "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention, I'm fine. You can... you don't have to... ah... really. I'm fine. No healer needed."

He continued brushing her off, dusting her rear and her back off as he kept spouting his apologies. D’io wasn’t always the nicest guy, sometimes popping off at the mouth before he had a chance to think things through but he was careful with other people. Especially when those other people were tiny women he accidentally knocked over. Casa was the only person on the planet that did not fall into that category.

She’s cute

D’io grimaced at the brown’s words, ignoring them completely as he glanced at her suspicious face. He couldn’t figure out why she would look so suspiciously at him for apologizing but he couldn’t stop himself. One last dust off of her shoulder and he gave it a pat. “You’re fine,” he told her with assurance in his voice, “I wasn’t watching and Shirrikath was being a busybody and I’m sorry I ran into you.” He frowned a little when she said she didn’t need a healer and he didn’t quite believe her.

“You sure?” he said and pointed back over his shoulder, “I don’t mind taking you. You hit the ground pretty hard and I’d feel terrible if something was broken or sprained and you didn’t get help for it.” He noticed the book she’d had clutched in her hand. “I can carry that for you,” he offered, “Help you get to the archives if you want. I don’t have anything important to do and it’s the least I can do for knocking you on your ass.” He would feel bad about that for awhile, he’d heard how hard he’d knocked into her and how hard she’d hit the ground.

The continued brushing and dusting made Ferra bat at the man's hand, frowning even more. "Really, I'm quite fine. Thank you but I can handle this myself. Really, I don't need a hea-" the words broke into a startled squeal that quickly turned into a pained whimper as she tried to twist away and take another step. She hadn't noticed it before somehow, but there was a sharp throbbing pain in her knee when she tried to rotate her left leg, and she stumbled back down onto the ground, dropping the terrible book yet again as she clutched the offending limb.

She couldn't have this! How would she do her chores if her knee wasn't working! She didn't want to get into trouble for being lazy. All of Ferra's thoughts left her in a panic as she was suddenly picked up in a very casual manner. "Wha- put me down!" She feebly batted at the man, her face crimson as he carried her off. All she had to do was escape and then she could run and... no. She was being ridiculous, Ferra realized as she crossed her arms stubbornly. She did need to go see a healer for her leg, and she couldn't run even if she did get away. This man was trying to help her and since it seemed she needed it she could at least try to be rude.

That didn't mean she had to trust him though. She'd met a few nice people in the weyrs, like R'dal and some of Fen's other friends, but she knew better than to think everyone was like that. And she was supposed to be practicing being out of her comfort zone and making friends, though she was sure this wasn't what anyone had in mind. She sighed and gently batted at him again. "I'm sorry that you have to carry me. I'm Ferra."

D'io's brows hit his hairline when she squealed with pain. He was pretty sure he hadn't dusted her off that hard and he watched her try to flee only to hit the ground with a thump. I think she's broken, D'io, Shir told him with worry in his tone, and D'io knew without a doubt the dragon had been using his eyes the whole time. He had a feeling he had been and the brownrider shook his head at it. You have to help her, the brown continued with a demanding tone but D'iuo was already moving.

He scooped her and her book up before starting off towards the healers. "I won't," he said as she batted at him with rather weak and ineffectual slaps. "There's obviously something wrong with you," he continued and bounced her a little to get a better grip on her, "And you are going to the healers." She really was kind of adorable, a little silly with her little slaps and protests, and not at all what D'io was used to but he didn't mind it.

He grinned when she finally settled down with a sigh. He glanced down at her face as he walked along and she patted him again. "Pleased to meet you, Ferra," he told her with a smile, "I'm D'io and I'll be your lift to the healers today. Are you from around here?" He didn't remember her face but she looked vaguely familiar like he should know who she was, he was fairly certain he'd never met her before this day.

"I live here, I'm a candidate and my brother Fen is a dragonrider." Ferra huffed in annoyance as she was carried, doing her best to not think about how obviously strong D'io was as he easily carried her, or how close he was, or how she was curious about how his beard felt. Instead she purposefully tried to look at anything else, like her hands which she realized were empty now and bookless. She gasped. "The book! I have to go get that back and return it!"

Another furious but feeble flurry of fists punctuated the statement. As mortifying as it would be for anyone, especially some strange man, to see the book, it was even worse to just leave it behind. Ferra was still responsible for it after all, even if she was ashamed of it. She pointed it out to D'io, making him grab it for her so that she could immediately snatch it back and try to hug the dirty cover to her chest to both clean it off on her shirt and hide it from view.

Ferra blushed, embarrassed even more by the entire ordeal and her current situation. Hopefully D'io hadn't seen anything and wouldn't say anything if he had. Still, for humoring her and continuing to carry her to the healer she decided maybe she out to thank the strange man. "Thank you... for your help. Even if you did knock me over."

“How long have you lived here?” he asked, trying to keep the conversation going. Maybe if he just kept talking she’d forget he was carrying her and why. “I was searched for Ista but I don’t remember a Ferra, but I do remember your brother,” he continued with a grin as she huffed at him. He laughed when she started punctuating her dismay with fists again. He backtracked at her demands. “Alright,” he told her as he shuffled her around to keep from dropping her.

“You know you can just ask me something,” he said with a slight roll of his eyes, “I promise I’m not as dumb as I look so you don’t have to keep hitting to get me to do it.” He was curious about the book that she clutched to her chest like it was equally the most precious treasure and the worst thing on the planet. “What are you reading?” he asked with that same curiosity that was written all over his face, “I.. uh.. I can’t read but I like to listen. Could you read it to me while we walk to the healers?” Brave.

He didn’t usually tell people he couldn’t read or even write really but he didn’t want her to feel bad about falling down and hurting herself. He chuckled at her slightly backhanded thanks and shook his head. “Would I have knocked you over if you hadn’t run into me?” he asked her with a teasing wink. His steps were slow and concise, he didn’t want to drop her and nodded towards the book again. “Well?” he asked with a bit of a hopeful tone, “Will you read it to me?”

Ferra blushed as she kept trying to hide the book against herself even tighter, mortified at being rude enough to be scolded. He was right after all, she could have and should have just asked him to get the book instead of panicking about it. "I know... I'm sorry I should have asked. Thank you for getting it for me. And I've been here for more than a year." She wasn't sure what to make of him knowing her brother, maybe she would ask Fen about it later, but for now she could still be wary. After all, he could have been one of those riders who'd had a Flight with him; that didn't mean he was a friend.

D'io's confession startled her into further silence. He couldn't read? Maybe he was a drudge too... or at the very least not from a rich family. All of the rich folk she'd seen knew how to read, even if they never did it and just wasted their education. His request that she read the book to him left her turning a brilliant shade of red as she shook her head furiously. "No! Not this one! It's... it's not a good book. It's terrible and not something you should hear and not something I should read either. That's why it has to go back."

Ferra frowned, mulling over how hopeful he sounded but also still stuck on his illiteracy. "Why don't you know? They have classes in the Weyr. You should know how to read." She felt guilty asking such personal questions and instead decided to try and make up for her rudeness in a different way. "Maybe I can try to read a different book to you after we drop this one off."

"It's okay," he told her with a shake of his head, "You don't really hit all that hard but it might piss someone else off and I don't want to have to escort you back to the healers because some asshole beat you." Maybe you'll have to stick around a while to make sure that doesn't happen, the brown cut in with amusement. D'io had no idea what his dragon was trying to play at but he was immediately suspicious. "Ah," he told her with the understanding dawning, "I've been at Fort with Shirrikath for a little more than a turn."

He was getting a lot better about not letting people's reactions to his confessions bother him and this time was not as different as any other. He maintained his composure, pretty certain that she was judging him with the slice that followed his words and he shifted again. "Why would you read a book that wasn't good?" he asked her with a cock of his head and glanced back at her. Why was she blushing so hard about a book? It made D'io even more curious and he made a note to ask Mylo why a book would make a girl blush. "I can take it back for you after the healers if you want?" he continued with an offer of more help.

He strode through the healer's door and shrugged at the questioning look from one of the journeyman and moved to set her down on a table. "Because the words all jumble together and don't make any sense," he told her honestly as the healer came over to see what was happening. "I would love for you to read me a book, Ferra," he told her and nodded towards the healer, "I'll stay here while they fix you up yeah?" He didn't really let her deny it and explained to the healer what had happened and waited for them to fix her up.

"Hold my hand while they do this," he told her and grabbed her small one in his big. He knew this was gonna hurt just by the grim set of the healer's mouth.

Ferra's blush deepened as she turned her face away to scowl. "Because I was curious about things I shouldn't have been and being too nosy. And maybe you can help me take it back and we can find a better book at the library." The jumbled words D'io mentioned didn't make sense to her, maybe he just hadn't been taught well? She thought about asking him more when the healer came to interrupt her thoughts.

As much as she hadn't wanted to be picked up and carried away or even really meet D'io to begin with, Ferra found herself glad that he was offering to stay as the healer poked and prodded and examined her knee. She managed to avoid whimpering too much, instead squeezing D'io's hand in hers with much more strength than any of her feeble hits had held as the healer suddenly gave her leg a yank and straightened it with a pop.

The gasp that escaped her was both one of pain and of instantaneous relief as the searing throb in her knee faded to an ache that was much more manageable. Some numbweed and a bit of wrapping around the joint to keep it supported and the healer declared her good to go for now, but made her promise to come back should the pain get any worse. Stubbornly Ferra took a few tentative steps on her own, and while it was slow and sore it was doable. She looked back up at D'io, face flushing again as she mumbled softly. "Thank you for your help and for staying. I'm going to go return this book now, you can come if you want and maybe we can pick out a better book to read."

D'io didn't quite understand, still, why her face would flush so deeply at something she was curious about. He didn't press her though as the healer poked and prodded her leg. D'io had grimaced at the sight of the knee not quite where it was supposed to be and thanked fuck that he had a stronger stomach than some. "Sure," he told her as her little hand gripped his in a stranglehold, "I'll take it back with you and you can find something that is better."

He missed the laughed smirk healer as D'io focused on keeping Ferra's mind off what was happening. His curiosity would have been heightened at the strangled guffaw of the man as he'd listened to them. D'io didn't know the healer had gotten quite the look at the title of the book. He didn't like the sounds she made as the man examined her and he was frowning by the time the man had finally grabbed her leg tight and jerked. The pop of her knee was a little satisfying to the brownrider and knew it had to feel so much better for Ferra.

The sound she made when the dislocation was put back into place made the brownrider uncomfortable until he shook it off. He helped the healer get Ferra back on her feet, knee wrapped with numbweed slapped beneath the cloth. He grabbed the jar the healer handed over just in case she had more pain and shook his head as the little shit started taking little steps. "Should I carry you again?" he frowned at her and ignored the shake of the healer's head, "If it hurts too much I will, you're not heavy or anything."

He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and as far beneath an arm as he could with their height difference. "You couldn't make me not come with you," he told her seriously, "What if you fall again? What kind of asshole would I be if I just left you alone. We got books to pick out to read." He was going to hold her to the reading and D'io knew he didn't have to make a note to remember to do so, Shirrikath would probably poke him until he made it to Ista and Ferra.

Looks like the start of a beautiful friendship here. Don't mess it up D'io.

"No, I'm fine. If I fall I'll just get up again." Ferra eagerly limped onward to escape the healer. All she had to do now was just try to get to the library to drop of the book. As soon as she was rid of it everything would surely get better. At least she hoped. She was still wobbly as she tried to make her way and as much as it made her grumpy that she needed help, and that some strange man would be giving it to her, at least she had some at all. D'io really was a mystery. First knocking her over (though she knew it was an accident they both contributed to), then carrying to the healer and sticking around to make sure she was okay. She wasn't entirely used to that from outside of her family or from another servant.

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to try and get to know him a little better. "What did you do before you Impressed your dragon? Were you from before you were searched?" It was slow going as she hobbled along, but Ferra still refused to ask him to pick her up. Just had to get to the books, and then maybe she could rest while figuring out why he couldn't read. "What types of books do you like? Is there anything you want to learn about? And when you say the words jumble up... what do you mean?"

She paused to take a break from the dull ache and discomfort she could barely make out through the numbweed so that she could peer curiously up at D'io. He didn't seem like he was lying to her about that, and it was a ridiculous story to just make up. But if he had a dragon then surely he had to know how to read... unless... "Can your dragon read? Is that a thing dragons can do?" Ferra had never even thought to ask about that before.

He chuckled as he helped her away from the healer's. He couldn't really blame her, D'io didn't like to be around the healers any more than the average person and he blamed it on the poor care he'd gotten as a child. Care from a healer that had not been his father. Helping other people was second nature to the brownrider and now was no different. He knew that it made Shir proud to be his dragon when D'io did his best to help people, the brown just as bad about it as his rider.

"I was living at the hold," he replied and a slight smile on his face as it drew back memories of his life as a healer's son, "My da's a healer stationed in Ista and my mom was his assistant before she died." He didn't mind the speed, he was curious about the girl and if it allowed him a little more time to get to know her, D'io didn't mind. Maybe if he buttered her up enough she'd tell him why that book had made her blush. He knew it had to be a good one and not terrible like she insisted but he would let her have her little lie.

"The words just smash together and don't make what they're supposed to," he explained, "My da never could figure it out and the man tried his damndest to teach me to read. Wanted me to be a healer too." Not that D'io had actually wanted to be a healer, he didn't mind the work really but the brownrider had never had the actual desire to do it. "Uhh..." he stammered a bit as he floundered for the answer to her question, "I don't think he can. Might be because I can't, I'm not sure. Maybe I'll ask one of the older riders and let you know what they say."

He cocked his head to the side. "After we get a book want to go meet Shirrikath?" he asked her and shoved a hand through his hair, "He'd probably appreciate a good story."

Well at least D'io wasn't the son of a rich man, that helped to set her mind just the tiniest bit more at ease, though she imagined the son of a healer wasn't exactly poor. That and it made more sense why he was so concerned when she was knocked over and why he'd help get her to the healer in the first place. Ferra relaxed ever so slightly, enough that she was leaning a little bit more against him to help with her limping long. "Maybe you can tell me more about the words when we get there, can you write at all? If... if I'm being too nosy or it's uncomfortable you don't have to. I'll just read and let you look at the words too."

Just not for the book she was currently holding. Ferra tilted her head when he offered to let her meet his dragon. "That sounds nice. I can read to him at the same time." She'd spent time with Halomirth, but not much with other dragons. She was curious how that would go, she didn't even know what color his dragon was! Once they got to the library and she very quickly and quietly returned the book, she looked for something she thought D'io and his dragon might appreciate, settling on a simple adventure story.

"Do you think this one will be fine? It's about a dragonrider fighting against felines in the jungle as he tries to survive in exile." Ferra had no idea if the story was real or not, though she suspected that it was a mix of truth and exciting embellishments to make the story more entertaining.

“Nah,” he said and nodded with satisfaction when she leaned against him a little more. It was a little silly to try to be so tough and badass when there was a perfectly good person walking along to help. “Can’t write either,” he continued with a shake of his head, “when you can’t make the words do what you want them to, it’s kind of hard to write them down.” He wasn’t upset by her questions, surprisingly, but he knew she wasn’t meaning any ill by them. He could deal with that, it was when they got nasty that he had a problem with it.

“Sure,” he told her, “I’d love you to read the words and show them to me.. Hey.. You could try to teach me yeah?”

I’d love to meet her, the brown broke in, You should bring her over to say bye before we leave later.

D’io chuckled at the dragon before glancing back at Ferra. “Shir’d like to meet you before we leave later,” he told her as he followed her into the library. He was still overly curious about the book she didn’t want him to see and tried to figure out how he could get it out of the room without her noticing. He’d take it to Mylo and she could read it too him, if he could get it out. “Sounds like a great book,” he told her with a smile and motioned towards the small couch that was against one wall. “We can sit there and you can start,” he offered.

"Oh. I suppose that makes sense," or at least as much sense as it could from what little understanding Ferra had of the situation. Maybe she'd try to figure out more about it if they had time, for now she had already agreed to read to D'io so she would start with that and just see where things went. And when the man finally got bored she would hobble back home, hide from her siblings, and try to nap and forget about her mortifying day.

Teaching him to read sounded like an interesting challenge, and one that would be honestly helpful if she could manage it somehow. Ferra glanced up at D'io again, studying his face for a moment before nodding. "I will try to teach you to read. And maybe write while we're at it. And if I can't then... maybe I can find someone better to help."

She squished herself against one end of the couch to make sure that D'io had enough room to settle down too. Once the larger man seemed comfortable she took the adventure book she'd picked out, opening it up and leaning in so that he'd be able to get a good look at the pages. "I'm going to point things out as I go, and if you have any questions just ask them. Oh and if you get bored just say so and if my leg doesn't hurt too much we can go see your dragon."

Ferra cleared her throat and started reading, gradually leaning more and more against D'io as she did, pausing to answer questions or repeat things as she went. Her finger traced along just under the words she was reading so that he could try to follow along. She was doing fine until she paused, stumbling over a word as her cheeks colored a bit. "Um... we can skip this part... it's just... uh... rude."

He grinned at her when she agreed to teach him to read. He didn't think she'd be all that successful in doing something his father couldn't even do but D'io liked the idea of being around her whenever he was in Ista. He settled himself on the creaky couch, scooting so she was comfortable enough sitting next to him, and waited patiently for her to begin reading. "Oh I don't think I'll get bored," he told her softly, "But if I do, I promise to tell you and I can always carry you again."

He grinned when she cleared her throat and started reading. He leaned over, arm slinging across the back of the couch as she settled in closer and closer to him. It was a comfortable weight next to him and he tried to follow along with her small finger as she read the words. He posed questions here and there, making sure she pronounced a few of the words more than once while he whispered them under his breath.

It was a fun story and he was quite enjoying himself when she started stuttering over words. Concerned he looked at her and realized her cheeks were flushed again. What was it about these books that made Ferra blush like that? It only served to pique his curiosity even more. He laid a gentle hand over hers before she could start flipping through pages. "Ferra," he told her with a small shake of his head, "How am I supposed to learn if you don't tell me all the words?"

The reading had been going to well, at least so far, and Ferra had even started to enjoy sitting there with D'io. The story had even been fun to read! At least up until this exact point. She was so distraught by the upcoming little block of text that she didn't realize she was practically snuggling up against the dragonrider. Surely she could just skip to the next section.

The hand on hers made her frown for a moment and she looked up at D'io's face to suddenly see how close he was with his stupid bearded face that was making her think of the book's protagonist. But he had a good point, how was he going to learn if she just skipped over it? "I... um... okay. If you're sure."

Ferra turned her attention back to the book and swallowed nervously before stammering her way through the protagonist talking about how he longed for the touch of a woman again... and how he wanted to... she paused, turning back up to D'io with her cheeks on fire. "Do I have to read the cursewords too? It's... it starts with an f... and... I just don't like them."

"I'm sure," he nodded. She'd gotten close enough to D'io that it wouldn't have been much for him to kiss her. While Skirrikath seemed to enjoy that idea, D'io had a feeling it just might not go over well with the girl in question. "Gotta learn them if I want to read them right?" he continued with a slightly raised brow. He had a feeling this section was going to be good if her blushes were any indication and D'io looked forward to it.

D'io hummed quietly as she went through the words, it didn't sound too bad. Mostly just a man needing a woman by the sounds of it. He was still trying to roll the words around his mind to try to remember them. He knew Shirrikath was already committing the letters and sounds to memory so he could help D'io if the rider needed it but D'io liked to be able to do things without someone giving him the answers. He frowned when she asked her question.

"What curse word would start with an f?" he questioned quietly with a furrowed brow. The question more to himself than to her before his eyes widened in amused shock. He made the connection between the entire scene, torn between a childish laugh and keeping his cool. The touch of a woman and how a man wanted to fuck her! The tops of his own cheeks might have flushed slightly when realization dawned. "Uh... You can.." he did his own stammering, "You don't have to say it. You can just replace it with 'make love'.. Yeah, make love sounds better."

He rubbed a thumb across the hand he still touched. "Can you continue?" he asked her with a little bit of urging, "I'd really like to hear the end of the story." And whether the man got his wish or not.

Ferra wanted to curl up and just disappear, but she'd already said she would read this story to D'io and help him learn to read and what sort of teacher ran away from something like an embarrassing word? She couldn't even hide her face since the closest thing was the man himself and that just would not do. So she squirmed uncomfortably, adjusting her injured leg with a small wince as she found the only way to really be comfortable and in a position where he could easily see the words was to stay practically glued to his side.

There was still the word though... she sighed and shook her head. "I guess it does sound better but I can't just replace it because you're learning to read... so... um. That one," Ferra pointed at the offending letters as her face blushed. "That's the one." She then did her best to read the rest of the section without dying of embarrassment even though it was mostly day dreaming and without even having a woman there in person at all. Once she was done with that chapter she paused to just catch her breath and try to mentally congratulate herself on making it through such a harrowing passage. She could do this! Maybe. Hopefully there weren't any other scenes like that!

"So... did... did you want to keep going? Or save the rest for later? I can keep going now, but I don't know if you have other things to do and I don't know if you've eaten lunch or anything and we still have at least half of the story left." Ferra was torn between hoping D'io wanted her to keep going, and being afraid that he wanted her to. She was actually mostly enjoying herself and that filled her with some sort of dread that maybe something was going to go terribly wrong.

He didn't mind how close she was to him or how she had to press against him to be comfortable and be able to show him the book. He was enjoying it actually but he wouldn't voice it out loud. D'io was far too nice to do something like that before he got to know someone. But he could think it just fine. Shirrikath agreed and the brown only rumbled with amusement in his mind as D'io waited for her to continued.

"It's a pretty naughty word," he told her with a quiet chuckle as she blushed, "Shirrikath doesn't like it at all." He remembered distinctly when the golds from Shir's clutch had gone off with an unrestrained shouting match of the word back and forth. Shirrikath had not appreciated it in the slightest. The brown was a little more understanding of the word now but he still wasn't keen on people shouting it around. He liked the book she was reading and D'io enjoyed the sound of her voice, he realized he hadn't let go of her hand when she got to the end of the passage.

She doesn't seem to mind

"I just came to Ista to visit some friends," he told her with a shrug, "I have all the time in the world today for whatever you want to do. We can save it for next time if you want and go meet Shirrikath or we can read the rest and chose another for next time."

Next time. Ferra couldn't help but smile at the thought, even if it still was a bit unnerving and terrifyingly new. A small rumble from her stomach reminded her that she'd intended on eating something after dropping the book off and she turned to glance up at D'io. "Maybe I can grab something to eat and..."

Her voice trailed off as she realized they were still practically cuddling and she jerked, snatching her hand back as she pulled away. "Sorry... um... I should eat. And..." run away. She should definitely run away. "Maybe we can sit with your dragon and finish reading? If that's fine." Ferra was so appalled by the words coming out of her mouth that she didn't move or even hear D'io's response for a moment as she frantically tried to think.

Maybe it was just because her knee was hurt, and the pain was clouding her judgement even though it was only a dull ache at this point. It certainly wasn't because he was comfortable and warm to lean against and strong and had carried her to the healer and then had helped her on her errands. He most definitely was not handsome.

Oh no.

Was he?

The first word that sprang to mind was that very unladylike curse that started with an F and Ferra blushed furiously. She didn't have time to really think beyond that though as she suddenly found herself being lifted up. She squeaked, arms flailing as she wrapped them around D'io's neck, book still somehow clutched in one of her hands. "You should warn me before you do that," she grumbled, deciding to keep her face hidden against him for a moment longer while she tried to calm down.

"Okay!" he said jovially with a chuckle when her stomach voiced exactly what she needed even as Ferra said it out loud. He didn't mind when she jerked her hand away and only smiled at her as she struggled to find her words. She was an interesting girl, one D'io had every intention of getting to know better. He still needed to know why she blushed so often and why he found it so adorable. "Shirrikath would love that," he said with a nod and started to stand, "He's been getting a bit bored now anyway and he still wants to see you."

He didn't wait for any type of argument to come from Ferra and he was certain there would have been a large amount of it had he offered to carry her. Instead, D'io reached down and scooped her up and into his arms without so much as a by-your-leave. He chuckled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, the thump of the book against his back bringing a please grunt from him. He wasn't sure if she would be able to keep hold of it and he was pleased she had.

"Why would I warn you?" he asked with heavy amusement, "If I warned you I wouldn't get to hear that adorable squeak every time." He bounced her slightly, adjusting his grip before he started out of the room, eyes finding the shelf and placement of the other book. He was coming back to grab that once they were finished and he was ready to leave, he would need to know where it was.

"Do you always read by yourself?" he asked as they came to the kitchens and D'io asked for some food, "Or would no one else read with you?"

"I'm not adorable," Ferra objected with a soft hiss, gently batting a hand against D'io's back. She settled into the gentle bounce of his walk and pulled her arms away from his neck so she could cross them defiantly in front of her chest, still clutching the book securely. As much as she wanted him to put her down, it was nice to be carried, and they were moving much faster than if she'd insisted on walking, so she tolerated it for the moment. If anyone in her family saw her... well, she had hurt her knee.

By the time they reached the kitchens Ferra's arms were still crossed, though not as tightly, and she was leaning a bit more comfortably against D'io. "I don't always read by myself... and it's not because no one will read with me. Sometimes I just like to read quietly. There's nothing wrong with that you know. Maybe if I can teach you to read you'll like doing it on your own too." That and reading by yourself meant you didn't have to read the embarrassing parts aloud for anyone to hear.

She let D'io order the food for them both, and she carefully tried balancing it all on her lap as he continued to carry her onward towards his dragon. Ferra considered offering to walk so that he wouldn't have to keep carrying her, he had to be getting tired of it, but there was a distinct possibility he might take her up on the offer. And she really was starting to like that he kept insisting on it. So she kept her mouth shut until she saw the beautifully rippled hide of the brown dragon. "Is that him? He's pretty..." she blushed slightly and corrected herself, "I mean handsome."

"You are adorable," he told her again and grinned at her as she crossed her arms over her chest, "Especially right now." And she was. D'io found that she was adorable when she was blushing and adorable when she pouted. It was a stark contrast from most of the women that he tended to hang out with and it brought out the hero complex inside him. He could feel Shirrikath's heavy amusement at his rider's thoughts as he continued on.

"I never said there was," he told her when she insisted there was nothing wrong with reading alone, "I've never read so I don't know how to do it correctly." He ignored the chuckles of the people around them as he walked them into the kitchens, he already knew some of them were going to tease him unmercifully but he didn't care. He'd run into her, knocked her down, and hurt her. The least he could do was carry her around so she wasn't in pain. A few glares that promised a broken nose or two had most of them quieting down and he allowed the drudge to stuff their food in Ferra's lap.

He did have to admit they probably looked silly as hell as he carried her and their food towards the part of the bowl Shirrikath waited. He grinned at a passing boy, throwing a wink his way as he giggled with glee as D'io carted his charge to the brown. "That's him," he said with pride as she took the big, solid brown in. "He's pretty handsome I suppose," he agreed as he set her down carefully and moved to one of his packs to grab out a blanket. He made it a habit to carry on just in case and flicked it out so they had a proper picnic. "Sit down," he urged her with another chuckle, "Before you fall down."

You can call me pretty if you want, the brown told her as he huffed a breath through her hair.

Ferra was somewhat surprised that not as many people laughed or commented on her being carried around as she thought there would be. She wasn't sure why, having missed all of the threatening glares that D'io gave them. Once the dragon had come into view she completely forgot to even bring it up as she just stared at him.

She was not expecting D'io to produce a blanket and she reached out to hold his hand as she carefully sat down, too busy studying Shirrikath's rippled hide to even think about the picnic. Ferra grinned at the puff of air that accompanied the low, dry voice and she gingerly reached out to try and gently touch his nose in a moment of boldness and was delighted when the brown nudged his snout into her hand.

"You are very pretty! And soft!" Ferra said with a soft delighted giggle. She turned to D'io, all grins and laughter. "I like him. He seems wonderful." With that little bit of wonder out of her system she settled down to look at the food, grabbing a small bite to nibble on as she scooted just a tiny bit closer to the dragon. "Can he have a bit too?" She'd considered just offering the dragon a little treat but that seemed a bit too rude and presumptuous. What if he had some sort of allergy? She certainly wouldn't want him to get hurt.
