The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Helyna.

Helyna tried to ignore the voice for a moment. She just needed a moment. One moment without a grumpy, broody gold in her head.

HELYNA! Kick the greenrider out of your bed and get down here. NOW please. They’re hatching.

“Excellent timing as always.” Swearing, she rested her forehead against Tala’s a moment, then pulled away and slipped off the bed, explaining as she went. “Iliyith says the eggs are hatching. I’ve gotta go; I’m so sorry, love.”

You’re sure they’re actually moving this time? Not like the other day? The nasty mental glower she got in response made her laugh as she pulled on some fresh clothes. I’m sorry for asking, but you had us all in a tizzy and I don’t want to raise a fuss over an egg you nudged with your tail.

Yes, I’m sure. They’re hatching. Get down here, Helyna. Can Niath go tell Rhezalth? I want him here.[/iliyith] Helyna rolled her eyes and sat on the edge of the bed as she braided her hair back. “My delightful dragon wants you and Niath to be glorified firelizards and pop over to Ista to let Rhezalth know. Then maybe you could pick up Vondlyn and join us? Do you mind?” She stole a last kiss, grabbed the letters she’d written to the Weyrleaders at the other Weyrs, and reluctantly hurried out, her mind racing.

Sure enough as she made it to the grounds there were already several eggs rocking slightly. Iliyith’s mood improved immediately as she saw her rider step into the cavern, her posture relaxing. “You do nothing by halves, my dear. Did you tell the others yet?” Helyna rested a hand on the gold’s shoulder, knowing she needed the attention.

I just told Aradissicath while you were getting here. The Weyrleaders should be on their way, and the candidates are being rounded up. Sending the letters off with a nearby weyrling now that she’d confirmed this wasn’t a false alarm, Helyna settled in to wait, hiding her nerves under a smile.

This is an NPC hatching, so there won’t be any PC Impressions this time around. Iliyith alerted Helyna at 8PM, and the first eggs will likely hatch between 9:30 and 10.

That said, everyone is welcome to come watch, or toss a Candidate on the sands! If you’re only watching, please go directly to the stands, do not linger on the Sands or approach the Candidates. Candidates, you can go right onto the Sands and form up around the eggs and settle in for some waiting.

Candidates:
- Will have been told to wear shoes! Sturdy shoes to save their feet.
- Be in Candidate robes that more or less fit them.
- Will have hair pulled back in a pony-tail or a braid. In addition, they will be no jewellery, belt, sash, or anything ‘extra’. Don’t want anything to get tugged on and cause an injury.
- Iliyith tolerates firelizards in day to day life but she’s not huge on distractions around her eggs; she wants her hatching to be perfect. Firelizards will be allowed in but they must stay with the humans in the stands or up with the dragons on the ledges. If they go near the eggs or Candidates, they may not live to brag about it.

I will probably group most of the eggs in groups of 3-5, but I’ll give people plenty of time for reactions.

Remember: NO SPOILERS. If you want to talk spoilers, keep it to the Hatching Spoilers channel in Discord.

Have fun!

Narinoa had learned from his last trip to Fort as a Candidate that going cold turkey wasn't for him and he needed to ween himself off of... what was it even properly called? He only knew it as 'sex klah' but had heard some also say it was 'slutty gold' but he didn't have any idea if it had a proper name. He only knew it as something that elevated sex and let him have dreamless sleep. That last part was the more important bit since he wasn't lacking in the great sex department and it was also that last part that made him almost decide to only Stand in Ista. His nightmares seemed to get worse the closer to a Hatching he got so putting himself in a situation where he couldn't be drugged up, simply put, sucked.

His love of animals and knowledge that a clear head ensured he wasn't messing with any drugs around a Hatching. If he Impressed, he had no idea what he would do. He couldn't take anything while his dragon was young and maybe never would in case it messed with the dragon's mind as well but since he had yet to Impress, that wasn't an issue he had to worry about just yet.

Sighing as he looked in the tiny communal mirror in the barracks, Narinoa went back to his bunk to find a strip of leather. He was in need of a haircut but had been putting it off, especially since a couple of his favourite lovers seemed to enjoy playing with or tugging on his hair--both of which he was also fine with. But the unruly curls did have a habit of getting in his face and considering how wild and unpredictable hatchlings could be, it was best to have a clear view. A few minutes later and he had won the battle, getting the front strands pulled back and tied up. Of course he looked rather ridiculous with the way they stood straight up but he could see and he felt he had the confidence to pull of the look.

It had been perhaps an hour since they got word of the eggs shaking but he was by far one of the last ones to get moving. In his own personal observations, Narinoa felt that the best indicator was the humming. More and more dragons joined in the closer it got to the actual first hatchling making an appearance. How they knew, he had no idea. Perhaps it was just how closely they were watching the eggs themselves. That was just another thing that fascinated him about dragons and why he wanted to become a rider. He could work with his own dragon to learn more about how they functioned, though from his talks with L'gan, it seemed like the dragons didn't know either and usually gave a 'I don't know, I just know' type of reply.

As he entered the Hatching Ground, Narinoa was surprised by how many had already arrived despite the late hour. Then again, family and friends would likely show up no matter the hour or what they had been doing. That was something he loved about the Weyr life--everyone seemed so tightly knit and was always there for each other. His own brother not included, but Z'ia did his own thing on his own time.

Unlike some of her female friends, Dareji had no issues with Fort's rules about women needing to attend Healer Hall. She didn't find she was squeamish over blood, she didn't mind learning, and she definitely wanted to help out however she could so it seemed like a good fit. She had yet to transfer to Fort full-time and actually get herself enrolled at the Hall through R'nya's program but she would soon. Everyone was so busy with the Benden move that was happening in about a fortnight that Dareji hadn't wanted to add to the stress or get her request lost in the shuffle. She could wait a bit longer, which also gave her a bit more time to really think on what she wanted. Besides, this very Hatching could make the decision for her if she found her lifemate that night.

That made her smile. Her father was a beloved bluerider, her brother was a popular bluerider that had Impressed at fourteen, and she wanted to continue the legacy. She hoped for a blue as well but any colour would do. At any time now as well. She sometimes had doubts about if she was meant to Impress as it hadn't happened as quickly as it had for the men in her family but she did her best to think positively and that it meant the perfect dragon just hadn't come along yet. Maybe, she now added, it was waiting for her to be a mini-Healer. She'd find out after tonight!

Dressed in the awful robe with her hair pulled back, Dareji made her way to the Hatching Ground, smiling as she entered and the warmth of the cavern and humming washed over her. No matter how many awful things she had witnessed on the Sands, she always felt welcomed and even at peace. Doubts and fears would always linger but they weren't as strong when she let herself get caught up in the excitement of the wobbling eggs and become enchanted by the humming of dragons. Is that why they actually did that? She gave the ledges a look of contemplation as she moved across the Sands. She appreciated it if that was the reason, she decided, before scanning the growing crowd. She saw her father and smiled and waved at the man and then spotted R'dare and R'dal settling in with some other friends. They also received a greeting. She felt loved to have everyone's continued support and their belief in her.

Rhaedalyn had just finished getting the little ones to bed when Aradissicath brought word of Iliyth's clutch was ready to make their entrance into the world. Aradissicath was sent to go keep an eye on things--not that she didn't trust Iliyth or Helyna. She was actually quite proud of the pair's growth from their first Flight and Hatching cycle and felt for the next one, they wouldn't need to have so many rules and restrictions applied to them. But having Aradissicath there would be a reassuring presence for Iliyth while also making sure any troublemakers knew they were being watched. Aradissicath may never have grown out of her clumsiness but she had a keen eye and an intimidating presence when she put her mind to it.

When Varlea and Alyren came bursting out of their room minutes later--likely having eavesdropped on their parents discussing the news-- Rhaedalyn gave an inward sigh. Both girls wanted to attend the Hatching and she had brought it up with R'nya not too long ago. Varlea was seven now and seeing Hatchings in person would be good for her, let her know what they were like and if she truly wanted to Stand when she was older but Rhaedalyn felt seven was too young. Then they would have to deal with Alyren only being five and wanting to do everything her big sister did.

Rhaedalyn was still of the opinion that children under ten didn't need to see such horrible sights and some, like her own Alyren, couldn't handle sitting still and quiet for hours on end. That was a rule they were still doing on a case by case situation. They had yet to put a Weyr-wide rule in place but instead let it be based on the gold stuck on the Sands and encouraged parents to consider the safety of not only their young child but of the Candidates as well. If a child started crying or yelling about being bored, it could upset a hatchling and Rhaedalyn didn't like that line of thought at all.

After the same old argument, the girls went back to their room and Rhaedalyn sent for Quinvalis to watch over the girls. The sweet boy normally would be Standing but he was still shaken from his injuries at Aradissicath's last clutch. Rhaedalyn still had such guilt when she saw the boy, though she knew it wasn't anything she could have prevented. He was doing a lot better, walking without much issue and breathing without wincing, but he wasn't mentally prepared to Stand again. This was, after all, the second time he had been mauled at a Hatching and she could only wonder at what kind of thoughts were now plaguing him. He didn't seem to have too many friends but Rhaedalyn hoped Quinvalis was opening up to F'drel, R'dal, or even R'nya.

When she arrived at the Hatching, Rhaedalyn smiled and greeted everyone she walked by, stopping to ask a group of Candidates how they were doing and asking their predictions of colours. Eventually she made her way to Iliyth and Helyna to check in with them and praise them for an excellent clutching. After chatting for several minutes, Rhaedalyn took her leave and went to the stands to settle in... and hope for the best.

M'ris had Mosiath put the word out when it came in. He really didn't want to attend another Hatching. Mizeath's own hadn't been that long ago and that was more than enough excitement for him for the time-being. They still had so much to do with the final details of The Great Move as he called it that attending another Hatching at another Weyr during what would be his only chance for a few hours of sleep did not appeal to him. Iliyth's Hatching was why they had extended the Move by a few weeks as well, not wanting to stress the Candidates or have someone end up without a bed because they were shuffled around the wrong way. Truthfully, he appreciated that extension no matter how much he wanted the whole ordeal to be over with. He was stressed, Ameris was stressed... but the angry sex and make up sex that came out of some of those days helped make up for it.

But he didn't want to ruin relations with Fort and the show of support between the Weyrs was always well-received overall. So there he was, about an hour later, getting out of bed, putting on respectable yet comfortable clothes, teasing Ameris with a reverse striptease, all while trying not to crawl back into bed with the gorgeous woman. He didn't bother to convince her to stay in bed, knowing she liked getting out when she could even if it was during peak sleeping hours. M'ris decided they could sleep in and their Seconds and the replacement leaders could handle things for a few hours in the morning.

He geared up both dragons as Ameris handled arrangements for their younger kids and soon they were off. He greeted R'nya with a smile joking about dragons and their perfect sense of timing before finding some seats. He didn't have any kids Standing but that didn't help ease the stress. Hatchings always had something go wrong but lately it felt like things had escalated and M'ris was constantly just waiting for that moment. At least it wasn't his Weyr and he didn't have to worry about the fallout, like Igen still not allowing them to Search in their region due to that damned brown's murder spree. Good luck dealing with them, replacements, M'ris thought before getting pulled into a conversation by someone coming over to greet them.

The clutch Rhezalth sire is hatching. Syrendryth interrupted, far too pleased with himself. T'ryn decided it was just the latest tactic his dragon was taking to be obnoxious and distract him from the task at hand so he ignored the voice. The task at hand was far more enjoyable and needed his full concentration since it was also a game that needed winning.

He actually wasn't even sure if he was winning anymore. He felt he had the upper hand at the start, wearing the tight leather pants that got varying reactions out of people but his opponent came prepared as well with the lacy dress that drove him wild the first time he saw it. Still he had been confident and showed great restraint early on, even removing his shirt, ruffling his hair and biting his lower lip to help give off some serious bedroom eyes.

Now, he had his hands gliding up smooth thighs as he whispered what he wanted to do to his opponent if she just gave in and said the word. Neither would concede which meant neither was getting laid just yet but the build up had been fun and he almost gave in at one point and was close to doing so again when the interruption came. I am not making this up, T'ryn. If you stopped to think for a moment, you would know that. Rhezalth and his rider would be extremely disappointed if you weren't there, especially if they knew why.

Given the frustrated growl Casa gave, he knew she was getting lectured as well. "Great timing as always. And this Hatching doesn't even involve our dragons," T'ryn grumbled against the neck his face was now buried against. He knew they were both hot and bothered and sitting through a Hatching in such a state would be torture. He recalled the end of turn party where they had teased each other but couldn't do anything about it thanks to clothing and being at his Aunt's home and how that night seemed to go on forever. Going through that again didn't seem fun.

"Sy says the news is current," T'ryn stated as he straightened so he could look at Casa clearly, "so we both know there's time... I'll even concede even though we both know I was winning," he laughed when Casa denied such a claim but several minutes later, T'ryn was pretty sure neither of them was the loser--unless one counted having to ignore the badgering of a dragon throughout most of the fun.

An hour later, T'ryn had tidied himself up though his desk was begging for attention and he was itching to give it. They had never made it to the bedroom during or after the game and his desk had been the closest and most desirable surface at one point so papers had been spread all over the place and some fell to the floor, but at least his ink pot had been stored away earlier that day and hadn't spilled on anything important.

Casa seemed a bit weird as she dressed again, but T'ryn wasn't offended by it. She was weeks away from becoming WeyrWoman, which that alone was already a stress, but he imagined she had likely received more news or an order on what to do for this Hatching or even if she was allowed to go; would they make her stay and be in charge? But then she asked about one of the notes she must have seen when she was up close and personal with the paper. T'ryn explained it, she nodded, and then excused herself to get ready herself. Odd, but again, he didn't think much of it before going to change.

He still didn't think much on it as he ignored the desk to get Syrendryth ready and head out. His mind was now on supporting N'mor, which also meant getting Mylorah to come. She had been hesitant about attending as she didn't want to end up going to Healer Hall if she accidentally Impressed. But he was fairly certain she loved her friends too much and wouldn't miss showing her support, especially when one of them was almost another brother to her and the clutch's sire.

It didn't take any convincing, he found out when he arrived because she had already left for the Hatching. When he got to Fort and found her in the stands sitting with Z'rin, T'ryn joined them and then immediately wished he hadn't. He had been right about her desire to support friends but he also found out Mylorah had ran to his weyr the moment she heard about the Hatching, hoping to catch him before he left to get a ride. But she had heard him with someone--and the way she said that word had T'ryn both blushing and hoping his sister didn't know what Casa sounded like during sex to know who he was with--and went to N'mor and Z'rin's weyr instead to catch a ride. He wasn't very chatty after that, refusing to answer her inquiries.

It was one of their quieter nights in as they drank wine and enjoyed each other's company in both companionable silence or with stories from the past or what they thought life in Benden would be like. The hour wasn't exactly late for them and Z'rin felt the shift in the air around them when N'mor turned to him during one of those silent moments. It seemed like they would be heading to bed soon but he had a feeling sleep wouldn't be on the menu just yet. In fact, he was certain he was on the menu with the intensity of that gaze on him.

They were just getting warmed up when they both froze, alerted by their dragons to a visitor. Z'rin frowned, wondering who would stop by via dragon at that hour and worried it was something serious. He braced for the worst news he could think of--one of their family members sick or injured--and nearly laughed when he saw Tala and heard the news of the Hatching. He didn't know why a firelizard couldn't be given the task but he supposed N'mor being the rider of the clutch's sire meant special privileges.

"Go get ready," Z'rin laughed again as N'mor leaned back in to continue on after Tala left. "You shouldn't be late and we can celebrate what will be an excellent Hatching when we get back." Z'rin knew he was more excited about the Hatching than N'mor was but he couldn't help it. He was the bronzerider's biggest supporter and he was so proud of the win and not at all worried or jealous that it seemed like Rhezalth might like Iliyth after winning both of her Flights. He was mated to a bronzerider and it seemed like bronze dragons were designed to mate with gold dragons, it was just the way of things. Besides, N'mor held no attraction to women so there wasn't anything to fear.

After N'mor left, Z'rin tidied up. He finished off his glass of wine and then washed the glasses in the bucket of soapy water that he had replaced that morning. The blanket was folded and draped back over the couch before going to gear up Varralath. He was just finishing up that task when he heard the knocking at the hall door. Another late night visitor may have been odd if he wasn't already aware of the Hatching. Someone likely coming to make sure N'mor was aware had been his guess but he found himself to be wrong when Mylorah stood there, smiling bright as he welcomed her inside.

She mentioned her fears of Impressing in the stands but her love of her friends was stronger and it was so last minute that she didn't have a ride. Z'rin couldn't say no, even if she hadn't wanted to come for N'mor and the others. She could have simply asked for a ride to see her weyrling friends and he still would have gladly helped her out but it warmed his N'mor fanboy heart that she was going as support.

They chatted about this and that as they sat in the stands, both doing their best not to embarrass N'mor with waving frantically at him though they both joked about it and what his reaction would be like. When T'ryn arrived, the teasing turned to him and Z'rin found it rather interesting what the reason was that brought Mylorah to his door. So T'ryn had a new lover, eh?

He may not have been jealous or worried about Helyna stealing his mate but Z'rin did have secret fears about T'ryn. He wasn't blind or stupid no matter what his difficulty in reading may have shown. The two bronzeriders had a tight friendship that sometimes Z'rin felt would have become more if they had the chance. Sometimes he wondered if he got in the way of that but he had also seen how T'ryn looked at Casa in the past and Cazan at the Hatching before and after she accidentally Impressed and Z'rin didn't think T'ryn was interested in men. It was petty of him but he wondered how he could bring it up to N'mor but a glance to his lover made him squelch the idea as fear of hurting N'mor came to mind. Instead, he just chuckled at the teasing between the siblings, not taking either side, and quietly enjoying the moment.

Attending a Hatching was not on N’mor’s to-do list, and he was more than slightly put out, though Tala did seem quite positive that it wasn’t a false alarm, which helped. N’mor still hadn’t decided what he thought of the greenrider, and was holding back judgement until he did. He didn’t really know her, and didn’t really want to – he had enough female friends to more than get him through life, thanks – but the fact that she was attached at the hip to Helyna meant there wasn’t much option, since Rhezalth seemed rather fond of Iliyith. That was something else N’mor wasn’t sure about, but if the bronze and gold mated, well, at least he knew what to expect post-flight, and he might even convince Rhezalth that flying other golds wouldn’t be wise…

With his affections playfully dismissed by Z’rin, N’mor hauled himself into action and got dressed, finger-combed his hair into almost neatness, and made his way to gear up and leave on Rhezalth, promising to meet up with Z’rin when he arrived. From there, it didn’t take long to find his way onto the Sands, Rhezalth stopping beside Iliyith at what appeared to be an agreed upon distance. His dragon looked content, though, so N’mor left him with a slap on the shoulder and a polite greeting to the gold. He liked her; she was a pretty dragon, and seemed to have a good head on her shoulders.

Joining Helyna, N’mor gave her a light peck to the cheek in greeting, and then beamed when he saw Vondlyn with Tala, swiftly stealing the youngster away from the greenrider (with no shortage of a smug look) even if she had to help a little with getting the toddler onto N’mor’s hip; he was still mastering holding the child with one arm, not that Vondlyn seemed to mind. Smiling warmly, N’mor asked the child playful questions as he took him up to join Z’rin and company, ignoring the curious looks from Mylorah and T’ryn until he joined them. Giving Z’rin an affectionate kiss, N’mor turned to his friends and gave the toddler a little bump on his hip. “Hey, guys,” there may have been a slight blush across his nose as he shifted his gaze to the suddenly shy child. “Say hello to Aunty Mylo and Uncle T, kiddo.”

Wide young eyes stared at both Mylorha and T’ryn, before Vondlyn buried his face against N’mor’s shoulder once more, and the bronzerider laughed softly. “Or not.” Still smiling, N’mor dropped a light kiss on his son’s head before glancing over at Z’rin again. “We were invited to sit down front,” he teased, lifting his eyebrows dramatically and smirking as he spoke. It had been an odd invitation, but N’mor could figure out an order that wasn’t an order but was definitely an order when it was given. Shifting attention back to the siblings, N’mor gave a small smile. “Thanks for coming. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” He gave the kid a light shift; he could see Mylorah bubbling up with enough questions to explode. T’ryn looked… Confused? Maybe. N’mor turned back to Z’rin.

“D’you wanna take him? He’s getting heavy! Here, go to Zinnie for a moment, kiddo.” Wrapping his arm around Z’rin’s waist as he took the child, N’mor caught a glance of his father as he looked around the Hatching, and flashed the greenrider a small smile. B’jin didn’t look worried, and N’mor saw no reason to traumatize the child (either of them…) by introducing grandfather and grandson right then.

Helyna was relieved when Aradissicath arrived, and when she saw how much the other gold’s presence relaxed Iliyith’s nerves. She herself would be jumpy until after the whole affair was over with, though she thought she had a decent handle on keeping that to herself. Iliyith didn’t tend to snap at people, but this was only her second clutch. And with everything that had happened at other recent hatchings, having a gold with more seniority around to keep everyone in line couldn’t hurt. But it was best not to dwell on thoughts like that.

She smiled and greeted a few friends as they filtered in, though most folks either hurried off to the stands or went to gather with the growing group of candidates. Helyna noticed that a few of them who had stood at Aradissicath’s recent hatching were opting out of Standing this time, and she found that she couldn’t entirely blame them. It took everything in her not to glance nervously at the ceiling again, remembering how the ground had moved that day. No, shake off those thoughts, she reminded herself firmly. Nothing is going wrong today. It’s going to be perfect.

Helyna greeted Rhaedalyn politely, and thanked her for her praise of the clutch. Already this hatching felt like a happier affair than their first, or at least less shameful, and she was glad that Iliyith’s and her own efforts to reform the Weyrleaders’ opinions of them seemed to be panning out.

Iliyith was the first to notice Rhezalth, and called him over, her eyes whirling excitedly, stealing an affectionate nuzzle from the bronze before settling back again to watch their eggs proudly. Helyna smiled and accepted the kiss on the cheek. “It’s actually happening this time. Sorry for the false alarm earlier; Iliyith was antsy.”

She was pleased as always at his evident delight seeing their son; she had finally told him shortly after the Flight, and she had been nervous about his reaction. But after the initial shock wore off, he was extremely enthusiastic--sometimes a little possessive, but considering she hadn’t told him about Vondlyn for two whole Turns, that was easy to forgive.

Still, she felt herself tense, and knew Tala had too, as he walked off with the boy and introduced him to his friends. She rolled her eyes at her sudden feelings of overprotectiveness, putting it down to excess emotions from Iliyith, and relaxed. She had asked him to sit up front so they could keep an eye on each other, and also so Tala could run Vondlyn back to the creche if this dragged on too late or became chaotic since he was still quite young. But at least the boy didn’t seem to be overwhelmed, just tired and shy of strangers, and he seemed to take to Z’rin right away, which was also a relief.

Others were still filtering in as the first cracks began to appear and one of the eggs gave a tremendous wobble. Helyna prayed it would be a brief and bloodless hatching, and rested a hand on Iliyith as the cavern seemed to hold its breath. But after that one wobble, the egg stilled again as the dragonets seemed to rest inside their shells.

Fediletch could hardly keep still in his excitement as he waited on the stands. He'd been a bit better prepared this time, had everything he needed ready to avoid being in too much of a rush once the candidates were called to the sands. He also tried to position himself a bit more strategically, finding a group of smaller and younger candidates to casually stand by just in case anything went a bit crazy again. He could scoop up anyone about to be trampled. If anyone was about to be trampled. Hopefully nothing would happen this time, and hopefully none of the little baby dragons would get scared and go between.

Even more hopefully though, was that this clutch would have his dragon hiding somewhere. Fetch knew it wasn't a guarantee, never was. The last hatching he'd been at one of the babies hadn't even picked a candidate! Just a spectator lady who was so confused she'd been dressed like a man. He'd been working extra hard lately too with his chores and taking care of his little firelizard. What if he ended up getting a brown dragon to match Chuck? He took a deep steadying breath as he looked over the eggs. So many possibilities! He reminded himself once again that there was no guarantee, though he still held fast to the hope. For now he tried to keep his eyes peeled for any action among the eggs.

Casa was still trying to organise her thoughts as she dressed in one of the elegant dresses Azrin had bought her at some point or another; it wasn’t ideal for travelling in, but it was warm and comfortable and stylish enough for a Hatching, even on etaking place in the evening when Casa would prefer to be naked, or in her lazy and very comfortable pyjamas. As she prepared, Casa had a weyrling come to her weyr – they all had firelizards, which was particularly handy at times – and she borrowed it to send a previously written letter to Azrin; the front page was extremely verbose, with a flowery array of words designed to copy the same bullshit the Holderfolk tended to be prone to. On the reverse, Casa had scrawled a simple ‘Hatching at Fort, wanna come?’ since it was quite late, and she’d be damned if she was interested in deciphering the bullshit on the front in Azrin’s place. When a positive response came, Casa sent a bronze pair to pick the Holder and his wife up, knowing Thallyath wouldn’t be able to carry all three of them. Well, she could, but she wouldn’t. And Casa was two breaths away from being a Weyrwoman, so such antics were below her now. Apparently.

Arriving at the Weyr, Casa left Thallyath to make herself comfortable wherever she so desired, knowing the gold wouldn’t cause any trouble, and entered the Sands, beelining towards Rhaedalyn and Helyna to make her greetings, and wish the latter a good Hatching. With those niceties and chitchat done, Casa waved at T’ryn and Mylorah (squishing the sudden uncomfortable feeling that was sprung on her at the sight of her friends) and turned to see Azrin and his wife, Candristra entering. Excusing herself from the small gathering near Helyna, Casa made her way over to the Holders and greeted them, allowing Candristra to pick where they should sit, with only a few suggestions when prompted, for where to find the best view.

Sitting with the couple, Casa chatted cheerfully with the pair – and her dragon – anything to keep her mind off that which kept trying to overwhelm her. She wasn’t looking forward to whenever alone time came around for her, and her eyebrows would knit occasionally, just for a moment, before she’d actively push the thoughts aside and school herself as she’d been taught by the Holder beside her. She knew, without actively knowing it, that Azrin would pick up on her distance, but her skills were improving.

Having no real job other than to show support to the Lord Holder when needed, Azrin didn't keep any set schedule. Some nights saw him in bed at a respectful hour while others saw him up late doing a whole variety of things that certainly weren't classified as respectful. When the firelizard bearing a letter arrived, he had just been preparing to join his wife in bed where he had joined her earlier. She still had a glow about her and seemed so peaceful as she slept that Azrin was loath to wake her. However, she stirred a moment later, something that didn't surprise him anymore after the first few times she had said she could always tell he was nearby or watching her.

Azrin explained the letter about the Hatching but insisted she didn't have to go as it was late and would be dull and political. Candristra was having none of it, though. She enjoyed watching the little baby dragons find their mates and she liked Casa. Azrin was still deciding if that was a good thing or not. At least his wife agreed Casa was still in need of lessons to help navigate her way through Holder gatherings so his time spent with the petite blonde was never questioned.

When he realised that neither the Lord Holder or the heir were invited, Azrin considered doing it himself. He decided against the Lord Holder since the Hatching was at Fort and not Ista but Aldra could be a good one to have along with him. The heir was another one he had wrapped around his finger and he wanted to keep Aldra and Casa tightly linked as well so that when the Lord Holder met his sudden and shocking end, Azrin would be sitting pretty with a gentle guiding hand on the back of both leaders of the island.

In the end he decided asking Aldra for forgiveness in the morning would be easier than waking the young lord and his wife. He focused instead on his own wife, making sure she was suitably dressed for comfort and warmth as going between left a deep chill in her.

When they arrived at the Hatching, Casa was quick to greet him and he thanked her for the bronze escort before letting the women decide where to sit. He was busy taking in the spectators, looking for faces he knew and those that he didn't yet seemed important enough to ask about. As they took their seats, he held Candristra close to share his body heat with her as the women continued to chat with him jumping in here and there.

He noticed Casa wasn't entirely with the conversation at points and wondered what was on the girl's mind. It could be the late hour, maybe even the weight of her upcoming duties, or perhaps she was horny and just in need. He couldn't help with any of that at the moment but when Candristra turned to the men sitting a bit down the bench from them to greet them, Azrin took the moment to lean over to whisper to Casa as he vaguely pointed at the Sands to make it seem like the conversation was about the Hatching.

"You're distracted. Are your friends not leaving you as sated as I do? We'll have an extended lesson tomorrow," Azrin promised. Often their lessons were just that; teaching the blonde etiquette, history, or even about poisons and plants. Extended lessons always involved sex and while that offer would stand because of his own addiction to the act, Azrin didn't think the lack of sex was what was distracting Casa. He wondered what it was and if it would benefit him in any way.

L’gan was visiting with Sariel in the weyrling dorms when the humming began. Cirith had been dozing but woke up excitedly, pestering her mate to go. Laughing and patting Cirith’s head, he stole a kiss from Sariel. “I’ll have to let you break this one to her, Bell. Want me to pop in after?” He knew his night owl of a mate would probably be awake still, regardless of the late hour.

He sprinted off to change quickly and grab his bag from next to the door. More supplies had been stashed at the hatching ground entrance after the Touching just in case this clutch came early, but his paranoia had been unnecessary.

He greeted Heylna and Iliyith politely, then went to his position, getting ready and greeting the other healers. He could only hope this hatching was less exciting than the last one; a wish he found more and more common lately.

It started off simply enough. The first shell cracked and a dazed blue tumbled out onto the sands with a chirp. He sat for several moments in the fragments of his shell, keening hungrily and looking around at the candidates, not seeming to find what he wanted until one boy ran in late.

The second hatchling was more determined. A vivid green, she beelined straight for the group, startling several with her hissing and scattering them like wherries. She calmed down somewhat when she found her boy, but still glared at anyone who got too close.

Helyna hated to admit her heart had jumped into her throat as that green barreled towards the candidates. She was sure it had blood on its mind and felt her breathing relax as the dragonets bonded. A blue to start out; not a bad sign at all.

Some of the other eggs were cracking, but they paused as the babies inside rested again. Looked like this might be a long hatching after all; none of the others seemed in any hurry to break out of their shells. She looked over to the stands, finding Vondlyn and N’mor easily and giving them a smile and a little wave. The little boy yawned, and she was about to ask Tala if she minded taking him back to the creche when it happened.

Two hatchlings emerged within moments of each other and Helyna gasped. A stunning pair of bronzes stood on the sands, gazing around the cavern a bit dazzled. Iliyith hummed proudly, snuggling in with Rheazalth. A small brown hatched a few minutes later, but he was lost in the commotion as the bronzes finally moved.

They both went for the same boy and a sudden fight broke out between the two. The boy tried to get out of the way but a wing hit him hard and sent him sprawling. Helyna felt glued to the spot, her pride turning to horror as the dragonets clawed and bit at each other.

Frantic, she looked for N’mor again. “No no no no no, Vondlyn can’t see this,” she whispered desperately, trying to see if N’mor and Z’rin had turned her son away. Human and draconic shrieks of pain filled the air, and she looked back in alarm as one of the bronzes winked between. The other, his wing shredded, was standing protectively over the boy and snarling at anyone who tried to get close, even as his chosen reached up to try to calm him down.

Dareji smiled as the first hatchling appeared and looked a bit confused. She already adored the little blue but the longer it sat there without anyone seeming to go to him made her worry. She didn’t want the very first one to vanish between! She was starting to will the blue to focus on her, to find her open and accepting to him when finally a boy ran in to help his mate. She let out the breath she had been holding, relieved they wouldn’t loss that little fella that day. Sure, she was disappointed he hadn’t bonded to her but that was always the gamble and since she was a girl, it was even worse odds and she was steeling herself up against it every time.

But all relief she had that had carried over after a green found her mate as well vanished when the two bronzes started fighting. Were they fighting over the same boy? For a moment she was curious about who this special boy was but the flailing hatchlings took all of her attention and her stomach dropped at what came next. She whispered her disbelief with a half-raised arm as if she could have stopped it when one of the bronze babies vanished and the other was left with a maimed wing. Part of her worried about whether it would mend properly while the other part tried to figure out if that was the third or fourth hatchling. Not the first, but in the first five.

She knew people had superstitions about the colour that hatched first and now she wondered if blues being first would be considered bad luck given they lost a bronze and so early on. Dareji chided herself for thinking such things but it helped in keeping her together. She never liked the dragons keening and she absently wiped away the trail of tears that had slid down her cheeks without her knowing. So much loss in a matter of seconds. A bronze lost forever, another bronze potentially losing flight or stable flying if he didn’t mend well, a boy that would always wonder what would have been with the other bronze while also blaming himself for that death. She really wanted to go give the pair a hug but they were both upset and injured and she still couldn’t see who had even Impressed. She’d find out later as she didn’t want to crowd the healers.

Another glance to the spectators had her finding her dad and she gave him a small smile and wave, letting him know she was okay before seeking out her brother—who had moved down with R’dal to sit with the R’nd Kids. She gave them two thumbs up and she laughed softly when not only R’dare but all three of their friends returned the gesture.

It always took all of his willpower to keep his feet planted where they were when a human or hatchling were injured. He was there as a Candidate, not as a beastcrafter or healer. During the larger scale catastrophes where more were injured than could be helped at once, Narinoa had no problem jumping in to help where he could but this was a small incident that the Healers on standby could handle. He’d only be in the way so he stood back, holding another Candidate back as well, seeing the boy’s own interest in helping. After a few questions, it seemed like the boy was friends with the newly Impressed and injured boy—though it seemed perhaps the dragonet was in worse shape than the human was from his quick glance—and he did his best to keep his new companion calm.

Eventually he succeeded and got the boy chatting about some of his interests and just anything that would keep his mind from wondering how his friend was doing and if there would be more tragedies to come. Narinoa had assured him the best was working on the pair and knowing that L’gan and Eb’zer were among the Healers, he wasn’t lying in the least. Both greenriders were skilled in their craft and he’d never worry if either were looking after him.

Still, with all of his positivity he was putting into his fellow Candidate and the smiles that came easily to him, Narinoa hoped this Hatching would fly by as quickly as others usually did and didn’t drag out like some liked to do. It already felt like a slower one with just the first few eggs but that may have just been nerves messing with him.

Rhaedalyn gasped when the fight broke out with one hand covering her mouth and the other clutching R’nya’s hand. It was always hard to watch such things happen no matter how common they were. She had lived amongst the weyrbred long enough to know that a quiet and uneventful Hatching was a rare occurrence no matter how much they all still hoped it would happen. Not every rowdy Hatching was as horrific as some in the past several years, like Aradissicath’s own two months prior was rather tame. They still had Quinvalis being mauled and lost a few hatchlings while the ground rumbled a bit, but that was considered to be more normal than not despite it being Aradissicath’s worst.

Her attention had immediately gone to Helyna after registering what was happening on the Sands and Rhaedalyn’s heart broke when she saw the goldrider look into the audience for her child. She had seen the boy arrive earlier and how N’mor had taken the child and still had him now. He was clearly the father or maybe just an extremely nice Flight partner doing baby-sitting duty for the mother who wanted the child close and not in the crèche. Seeing the panic and concern for her boy that Helyna had, Rhaedalyn knew it was time to make some new rules.

“After tonight, no one under ten is allowed near a Hatching,” her voice was low but the intent clear as her gaze landed on R’nya after the bronze hatchling vanished. Rhaedalyn would not back down this time. She did still believe it was good to see what a Hatching was like before a child decided to Stand but ten still allowed them plenty of time to get that chance. Helyna’s son wasn’t the only child in the stands and Rhaedalyn suspected most of the parents would shield their eyes like N’mor had done while others possibly made their child watch so they knew what went into getting a dragon.

And to think mere moments before, she had been thinking how delightful it was to open with a blue hatchling. She found blues to be wonderful and took it as a good omen. Rhaedalyn refused to believe they were a jinx and would have to think about examples to counter all the arguments that would come from this saying a blue to open was bad. The easiest go-to was always Aradissicath was Weyrwoman and she came from a clutch of all greens with a brown sire but she’d have to think on blue openers later. They had to get through the rest of this Hatching first.

Z’rin knew the moment the Hatching turned into yet another bloody one that he didn’t like Helyna though he would always cheer for Rhezalth to catch Iliyith. She wasn’t to blame for the hatchlings’ behaviour, of course, but she could and would be blamed for having Vondlyn there. He had been tolerating her since N’mor told him about the boy—and boy was that a conversation! Z’rin had been hurt and confused for the briefest of moments before being told his mate had just found out himself. He didn’t like that she had kept the boy’s existence from his father and hated it even more the first time he saw the pair together and how much N’mor already loved his son. Z’rin had been instantly charmed as well and wanted nothing more than to take the boy home with them but he could tell N’mor wasn’t entirely ready for that step.

There had been mixed emotions when he arrived and saw Vondlyn on the Sands with his parents but when N’mor brought the boy to sit with him, Z’rin felt a bit more comfortable knowing the young child wouldn’t be in direct line of danger should a hatchling see red. He was willing to accept that compromise since it allowed N’mor some more time with his son, even if the child was sleepy and should have been tucked away in a bed somewhere.

N’mor turned Vondlyn away from the scene, doing his best to shield the boy and Z’rin instinctively tensed and readied himself to protect the pair just in case a hatchling found its way in their direction and caused a commotion of people scrambling in every direction. He didn’t like how close they were sitting and took back his previous thoughts that their seats were safer than being directly on the Sands with Helyna. His eyes scanned the Candidates, noting they all seemed to have learned over their time on various Sands to move away, and turned back to the duelling bronzes in time to see one blink away. Z’rin sighed, mourning the loss of another dragon but also felt it was for the best if two dragons wanted the same boy or at least hated each other so much.

As the Healers moved to help the injured pair, Z’rin turned to N’mor to keep from glaring at Helyna. “Would you like me to bring him to the crèche and try to put him to bed? A lot quieter and safer there for him and you don’t have to leave the Hatching.” Z’rin gently rubbed Vondlyn’s back as he snuggled in close to his father whether from being tired or upset. He hated putting N’mor in such a situation where he would have to choose between duty and family but his mate was also young with big goals and staying for the Hatching his dragon sired was a good stepping stone to achieving those goals.

“I can slip out now while it’s quiet and I’ll stay with him until it’s over. Varralath can keep me updated.” On top of wanting Vondlyn away from such scenes, Z’rin had to admit he wasn’t too keen on staying either. He was antsy now, the protective parent instinct kicking in and he could only imagine how much worse it would be when his daughter started to Stand in a few years like she currently said she wanted to do. He also just didn’t want to see anyone else be mauled that night no matter how much he wanted to stay and be supportive for his mate.

If asked, Azrin had no issues with stating his wife's reaction to the mauling was the reason why he didn't want her to come along. Depending on who asked, he would word his reply differently by either pointing out Hatchings were no place for women as they were too sensitive for such sights and Hatchings were a part of political games. Or a version of the truth would be given where he loved his wife too much and he hated seeing her upset.

He had tried to talk her out of the idea of coming given the late hour and how boring it would surely be--complete with an eye roll when mentioning how he would have to play nice and care about the well-being of Weyrleaders and goldriders and what not. But Candristra could be stubborn at times and she liked Casa and wouldn't dream of turning down a personal invite from the sweet goldrider that was about to be Weyrwoman. Now, as he held his wife in his arms, comforting her as she turned away from the mauling, Azrin wished he had pushed harder to keep her home. This wasn't her first Hatching and he knew it wouldn't be her last as she was too kind to not show her support, but damn him if he didn't want to lock her in a room when the next invitation came along.

He glanced over to Casa to see how she was dealing with the loss of a dragon and to see if she noticed his tender moment. He knew Candristra was his weakness but he also knew only a fool would try to use that against him. Casa wasn't a fool, which was why he had devoted so much time in training her in what he knew, but he also knew the girl could get some silly ideas in her head, though he suspected maybe some teasing at some point would be all she would continue to do.

He continued to murmur soothing words to his wife and let her know the Healers were tending to the boy. She finally came out of hiding in his shoulder when it seemed another egg was about to crack. He gave her a moment to do as ladies loved to do and pat at her hair and dress to make herself seem put together once more before holding her hand.

As with the last Hatching at Fort, A'tay went with firelizard and paper in hand. Madiquel had told him to keep her updated again--though he had shyly sent word to her before he left if she would still be up and want the updates as they happened. He had worried he was waking her but Xyxyth assured him all was well and in the process discovered that her friend Quinvalis wasn't Standing this time so some of the stress he had been carrying vanished. He really didn't want to report that another friend of hers was injured.

That relief was short-lived.

He had quietly joined his siblings and their blueriding friends just before the first egg cracked open. He hadn't meant to arrive so late but he'd taken his time getting around to bothering Madiquel--which only made the hour grow even later and made him feel even worse. He had learned from the last Hatching that short notes made it easier to keep up and Madiquel and her classmates were fine with that to help keep them in the know and get more details later if needed.

1 - lazy blue to boy
2 - hissing green to boy

He added names when he knew the person but he honestly didn't know that many Candidates anymore and A'tay felt a bit bad about that. Maybe we should visit them more! More friends is never a bad thing. A'tay wasn't too sure about that. He was shy and didn't like too much attention but maybe he could try to say hello to more Candidates. Maybe Mylorah knew the names of the newly Impressed and he could update his notes.

He had just started to lean over to ask when the third and fourth hatchlings also appeared and the fight broke out. He winced, heart sinking as someone was mauled and his eyes shut when one of the bronze babies went between. It never got easier seeing such things. He also knew it was all in his head but his hand that had been nibbled on by an excited hatchling started to throb and A'tay absently rubbed his other hand over the scars as he stared at the paper on his lap. He didn't want to write the note but he knew he had to.

Two bronze got into a fight. One vanished. Other Impressed to the boy that was mauled.

He sighed and glanced over to where the new pairs were feeding and saw a brown as well. he quickly noted that down and then finally leaned over to Mylorah since it really did seem like she knew everyone. He crossed out all mentions of 'boy' and replaced them with the appropriate names and then sent Shadow off with the paper. He debated waiting to add some more but it was quiet and he was distracted with trying to keep up with the conversation beside him while watching the Healers work since he knew Madiquel would ask about that.

N’mor’s lips pursed as the first dragon to appear was a blue, a very bad omen in his opinion. He would have rather see a green come first than a blue; the fact that a green was the next to break shell and find her lifemate did little to quiet N’mor’s irritation and anxiety. Nothing good would come from a blue hatching first. Nothing. Irritated by the two chromatic babies, N’mor turned his attention to the child he was holding; the boy was more asleep than awake now, the lull between everyone arriving and the hatching beginning wasn’t enough to keep him entertained so late after his bedtime.

When a murmuring spread across the stands, N’mor shifted his attention to see the pair of bronzes, and a small smile finally tilted his lips up, dispelling the displeasure that the first two hatchlings had brought out in him. N’mor’s eyes widened when the fight broke out, hissing between his teeth and then forcing himself to make sure Vondlyn wasn’t stirring, the child now asleep, and keeping him that way lest he see the commotion. N’mor didn’t think it would do him any parciuarl harm, but he could see Helyna freaking out about the child, and a moment later Z’rin was close beside him and the dragons were keening the sad loss of the baby bronze. N’mor looked up at Z’rin, eyebrows furrowing slightly as he listed to his mate.

N’mor let Z’rin take Vondlyn, nodding slightly, and touched his hand lightly to Z’rin’s, eyes soft. He would have liked to kiss the bluerider, but he had a reputation to uphold – both locally and as a bronzerider with all the Holders around – and so just nodded, looking down to meet Helyna’s eye, getting Rhezalth to pass along to Iliyith that the bluerider was taking the child to his bed. He then slipped from his seat, and made his way to the edge of the Stands, and hopped off, joining Helyna on the sands. N’mor placed his hand on her shoulder, giving a gentle squeeze of reassurance, before retracting it and turning to see what the next few eggs would bring.

She was relieved when she saw N’mor making sure their son still slept. A surge of possessiveness washed over her as she saw Z’rin leave with the boy, but she quashed it with a feeling of shame; Vondlyn shouldn’t have even been there, and it wasn’t like N’mor could take the boy back to the creche anyway, not in the middle of the hatching. Instead Helyna asked Iliyith to relay her gratitude to Rheazalth and Varralath for their riders’ decision, and to Niath asking Tala to follow and check up on him. If the boy was fussy, the greenrider knew some of his favorite songs.

Flashing him a grateful look as he joined her on the sands, Helyna caught his hand before it could leave her shoulder, squeezing it. “Thank you,” she whispered, then let him take his hand back. Turning back to the eggs she wished they would all just hurry up and hatch; get the damn thing over with. Surely the waiting was worse than anything.

Three more eggs cracked after a stretch of silence, revealing a trio of green sisters. The three greens were as different as they could possibly be; one was loud, crying anxiously for food and her mate, another was fearful and timid, trying to hide behind her shell or under her tail, and the third was calm and quiet, calling out to her mate and waiting for him to come to her.

Two browns emerged quickly after, eager to be free of their shells. They were cranky, and snapped at each other’s tails or muzzles, but didn’t make contact with each other, unlike the bronzes. Grumbling, they searched and found their mates easily before being led off the sands, their tails lashing angrily behind them till they got some food in their bellies.

Dareji cooed after each green that appeared. They were each precious in their own way and she found herself hoping one would come her way. She adored each one for their unique introductions to the world but none of them were meant to be hers either. She didn’t want a green, but Dareji knew she would have loved any one of these ones if they were meant for her. She giggled as the especially hungry and cranky one led the charge to the buckets of food.

When the two browns seemed a bit agitated with each other, Dareji held her breath, anxious over what might happen next. In an odd twist—at least based on everyone’s preconceptions about bronze and brown dragons—the browns were all talk but didn’t do anything else. Then again, maybe that did fit with what people assumed about the colours. Bronze boys were more of a take charge type and their need to be the leader would prod them along more than the browns that postured a lot and talked more than actually do anything.

Either way they were viewed, both browns made it through their bonding and headed off with their mates, though they still looked a bit cranky about it. Dareji playfully rolled her eyes as she shook her head at their antics. She wondered if they would be the troublemakers of this clutch and then wondered if this class would be full of such personalities, just like Aradissicath’s latest brood were boisterous and energetic.

Maybe being overlooked this time would be a good thing. She wasn’t sure she could keep up with such personalities.

Narinoa’s attention was still torn between keeping calm his new companion and anyone else around him that seemed anxious and trying to steal glances at the healers and the work they were doing. He knew if it was anything too serious and a beastcrafter might be useful that he’d get called over but his professional side wanted to assist or at least see what they were doing to help the bronze hatchling.

And then his attention was grabbed by some demanding greens and he found himself chuckling at the shy one and giving a pat on the back to a boy that stumbled past him to go greet his obvious mate. “Congrats, my man! She’s perfect for you.” He didn’t know the new weyrlings that well but knew enough to feel like they would be a good match. The other two green weyrlings were also men he knew and he gave them some well wishes as they passed by with their mates.

The browns, however, he didn’t know. Considering the freshly hatched personalities on display from the dragons, Narinoa was glad he didn’t. He honestly didn’t spend a lot of time around brownriders and the couple that he did, they didn’t seem as aggressive as the others. So these matches screamed to him that he didn’t want to know the boys even though there was a very small chance that they might not be too bad. Maybe he’d find out in the coming days as part of their class if he was lucky.
