Once again Rhaedalyn felt something wasn’t right as she rolled over and curled into R’nya’s side. She knew it had to be about time to get up and start the day and she would—soon. She wanted a few more minutes of cuddling but Aradissicath was making that impossible as she gently gave off odd vibes that Rhaedalyn couldn’t quite name despite how well they knew each other.

I think it’s time. The eggs have been moving a bit for an hour now.

That’s impossible. We only had the Touching yesterday and you’re so regular that we couldn’t have been a week off. Rhaedalyn was never the only one keeping track of such things. R’nya always liked to track the days and a few others did as well. They weren’t due to hatch for at least five more days.

I know what I see, child. Come down and see for yourself. When Aradissicath used that tone and called her ‘child’, Rhaedalyn knew her dragon was serious and not in a mood to argue or play around. So she crawled out of bed, kissing R’nya’s cheek when he stirred and explained what may or may not be happening and would return shortly.

When she arrived at the Sands, she hugged Aradissicath and tried not to disturb Iliyith on the other end as she seemed to be fast asleep. The poor dear wouldn’t be much longer if a Hatching was about to start. Rhaedalyn was worried about that as well. Aradissicath was behaving herself so far with having the other gold out there with her and other dragons would be joining them around the cavern later on so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Making herself comfortable on Aradissicath’s foot, Rhaedalyn watched the eggs for a bit and squeaked in surprise when she thought she saw one move. She moved in closer, slowly moving around the eggs and nearly jumped out of her skin as one directly beside her started rocking.

Oh dear.

Looks like we’re having a Hatching today, my love. I’ll go send word, you get to your humming!

As Rhaedalyn went back to alert R’nya, Aradissicath started her song to alert the dragons of the Weyr. In no time, Fort was waking to begin their preparations for the big day, albeit with a lot of confusion. Rhaedalyn already had her letters written for each Weyr and the Lord Holders that they dealt with so she sent them off one at a time with her three who had become quite the good little carriers—even Muffin, the rascal.

By the time their guests had started to arrive, Rhaedalyn had already dressed and fed herself and the girls before sending them off to the crèche for the day. She then moved down to the Sands once more to check in with the Healers to ensure they were properly set up and if they needed anything else. The Candidates would be arriving shortly and she saw an assistant milling about, so she went to speak with him to check in on the staff as well as how the Candidates were doing with the short notice. The Touching seemed to have gone smoothly but they hadn’t been left with a lot of time to digest their feelings and she worried for the new Searched ones.

Satisfied with the information, Rhaedalyn returned to her spot by Aradissicath where Xyreith and R’nya had joined her. She gave R’nya another kiss to the cheek as she slipped into his outstretched arms. “I guess they were just too excited from meeting the Candidates yesterday. I think I’ll blame Xyreith for the impatience or should it be Aradissicath for the eagerness?” She giggled as she looked at both dragons, knowing they always teased the other about traits the babies had.

Rhaedalyn was woken up before 5am. Letters went out shortly after that. Since they are so eager, they won't make you wait much longer and start hatching at 7am.

This is being posted 2 days before the event begins to allow time for everyone to arrive and not feel rushed once the Hatching actually begins. The first actual hatching post will go up around 9am EST Friday the 10th.

THE RULES:
Everyone is welcome to come watch! If you’re only watching, please go directly to the stands, do not linger on the Sands or approach the Candidates. Candidates, you can go right onto the Sands and form up around the eggs and settle in for some waiting.

Candidates:
- Will have been told to wear shoes! Sturdy shoes to save their feet.
- Be in Candidate robes that more or less fit them.
- Will have hair pulled back in a pony-tail or a braid. In addition, they will be no jewellery, belt, sash, or anything ‘extra’. Don’t want anything to get tugged on and cause an injury.
- Aradissicath loves firelizards in day to day life but she’s not huge on distractions around her eggs. Firelizards will be allowed in but they must stay with the humans in the stands or up with the dragons on the ledges. If they go near the eggs or Candidates, they may not live to brag about it.

On honorifics – it is SP canon that the dragon picks the honorific. They might pick something their rider likes, something they do not, or whatever. They will usually pluck the name from their rider’s mind, so it is likely that said rider will like their name, or have ‘pre picked’ it on some level subconsciously prior to Impression.

Once Impressed, please move through the following:
- Move dragonet to the sidelines and feed it
- Slap oil on any particularly dry spots
- Head to the Barracks to get some rest. Emotions are exhausting.

PC Impressions will have their dragonet posted on their Candidate Application! This will let you see your baby before anyone else!

Remember: NO SPOILERS. If you want to talk spoilers, keep it to the Hatching Spoilers channel in Discord.

Have fun!

Sariel forever slept lightly but she slept better with L'gan, Semath, and their girls around. Her babies were getting so big already. It seemed as if it were forever ago (and yesterday) that she had carried them within her. Hatchings since then had always been particularly emotional for her. When she heard Semath stirring first and then the humming that usually preceded a Hatching, she was awake instantly.

"Faranth preserve us," she murmured, giving L'gan a look as she moved to locate the Candidate robe she'd just mended the hem on the night before. Sariel had her neat pile of Candidate items set aside for the Hatching but this was rather early. They'd literally just had the Touching the day before and--

She pulled in a deep breath after switching her nightgown out for her Candidate robe and quickly gave L'gan a soft kiss. The girls were too young to be on the Sands and would have to stay in the creche. Her mate would see them there, she knew that without question.

Speaking of L'gan, he had his Healing duties as usual when it came to the Hatching - she'd see him there. That dimmed some of the roiling anticipation chewing at her gut. It wasn't really nerves, though she worried after the eggs just a little bit since they decided it was time to escape the confines of their shells. Clearly they were in a hurry to meet their lifemates. Ardissicath loved her hatchlings, something Sariel had felt deeply the day before. This wasn't...it wasn't like Thallyath's, as much as her thoughts kept straying there. Verec was still incredibly displeased with her performance at that Hatching. So was she, honestly. She'd screwed that up with the sheer amount of emotion and stupidity that had come from her.

She'd known better. So, as she'd promised L'gan, she'd behave but still be wide-eyed with wonder as she was at any Hatching.

With her thick Hatching shoes on, she ducked into Semath's ledge to give the green a hope-filled stroke of her muzzle and a bit of a cuddle before heading down to the Sands to ease her way into the line of Candidates. She nudged someone accidentally and put out a hand in apology.

"Sorry," she said quietly to the person she'd jostled. The humming was like thunder rolling into her bones and setting her body a-buzz. "I don't think I've ever been to a hatching directly after a Touching. We have some very, very eager dragonets in this clutch."

L’gan felt Sariel wake and sleepily pulled her close. Sometimes he was able to lull her back to another hour or two of sleep by holding her tight and matching their breathing. But then- L’gan? Sariel? The green’s voice was sleepy but excited. Aradissicath says her eggs are hatching. Can we go?

L’gan smiled into the skin of Sariel’s neck, pressing a brief kiss there and letting her pull away. He sat up with a sigh, blinking sleep away. It was early; or maybe they’d left the Touching too late. Though that didn’t seem likely. You could practically draw a calendar from how regular Aradissicath’s clutches were. He’d taken to charting several of the golds’ Flight patterns, always looking for more information which could help riders better understand the physiology of their dragons. He wouldn’t say something was wrong, per se; but it was an anomaly.

“Go on; you’ll do fine,” he reassured his mate as he slipped out of bed and tugged on fresh clothes. “I’ll be there soon; get a good spot,” L’gan replied to his eager dragon, watching as she danced from foot to foot before accepting a brief cuddle from Sariel.

They’d talked about the plan weeks ago, and he got the girls bundled up and down to the creche while she hurried to meet the other candidates and the weyrlingmaster, detouring briefly to grab his main kit from the infirmary on his way to the hatching grounds. He knew other riders would be dispatched to fetch Master Verec and a couple other Healers, so he made his way to the Sands, inclining his head politely to Aradissicath and smiling over at the Weyrwoman as he found his place.

We’ll need all the time we can get, with a clutch this size, L’gan thought, watching as Candidates, riders, and guests began to arrive. Semath had settled herself in a spot where she could see both him and Sariel, he noticed. Faranth please, let this one go smoothly. Please. Some of the candidates still looked a little jumpy, but many just seemed tired and a little confused. Well, wasn’t everyone?

Mylorah was used to waking at weird hours or dropping everything for a Hatching, but this time it was different. The Touching had barely ended! She wasn't expecting to be startled awake by shouting assistants and humming dragons just yet. Thank goodness she hadn't decided to hook up with anyone that night--though that was thanks to Dandioar satiating her needs rather well earlier that day.

As she braided her hair, Mylorah tried to recall what she knew about Aradissicath's clutches in general and what they had been told in a couple of classes recently. She was pretty regular with all of her timings--until now at least. But she didn't think the eggs usually made them wait that long either once they started rocking. She supposed she better get her butt in gear and make sure some of her slowpoke friends were moving.

After making her rounds to various friends, Mylorah headed out, only having a glass of water as she went. She never ate before a Hatching--unless one happened while she was eating--finding the nerves and food weren't a good combination. Upon entering, she noticed a decent amount had beat her and she waved at the Healers and greeted them as she walked by. She could never do what they did but she admired them and appreciated what they did from minor things to the not so minor things.

Not many had come down to watch yet, but the Fort residents would know Aradissicath's timing better than her--and not be rushed out the door by assistants either. Her family wouldn't be along for a bit either, depending on when word reached them and they got themselves put together. Sweet T'ryn also had to go get Tazikel out of bed and she knew from experience how hard that could be and knew neither men would like it if T'ryn used her tactics to wake the lordling. She bit her lip to keep from giggling to herself and sidled up beside a friend.

Dareji didn't know what to think as she prepared for the Hatching. It was too early! Was that a good sign? Was everything okay? Were they just as excited as the Candidates so they had to come out early? She hoped it was that last idea and she latched onto it while pulling back her hair and tying it tightly. Even with her mixed review of the Touching, Dareji herself was excited to see the babies. Hatchings were wonderful things and her heart always wanted to burst with happiness when she saw pairs bond and move away together. Of course her heart also shattered at times with some of the Hatchings she had been to but she refused to think about it that day. This was a new day, new clutch, new everything!

She ate her muffin while sipping at some klah, hanging back a moment to do so. She wasn't the biggest fan of the drink but a little boost would be good to have. It also liked to run right through her but a half cup would be fine.

But as she entered the grounds, Dareji realised she wasn't ready. Well, she was. She really did want a dragon of her and to prove she could and would be an amazing rider like her dad and brother--but that was part of the problem. Her dad and brother were both such wonderful people and had amazing blue dragons and what if she didn't Impress a blue or didn't get one as sweet as theirs? Worse, she didn't Impress at all and had to wait for the next one to go through it all again. Both men had Impressed younger than she was now, which she knew the odds were geared towards men but it was still starting to make her feel unworthy.

She wouldn't give up, though. She had her dream and she was going to see it happen. It just likely wasn't going to be on her timeline but she'd work with that.

Dareji waved as a friend greeted her and laughed when she saw R'dal waving enthusiastically at various Candidates. She knew he had Searched a few but he was so friendly that he probably knew everyone Standing that day. She adored that boy.

Narinoa was already awake when the humming started and frantic assistants came tearing through the dorm. He was still clean of the sex klah but that meant the nightmares weren't being held back as easily. He'd woken in a cold sweat an hour earlier and laid in bed trying to steady his breathing and not wake up any of the other men around him. After the rather benign Touching, he had hoped that would help balance out the horrible one of Thallyath's but it hadn't. Then again, he also had a couple of Hatchings that liked to haunt him as well with the murdered people surrounding him. He hadn't been able to do anything at the time and now they liked to remind him how horrible he was for that crime. Even now, he still felt their dead eyes on him, full of accusations.

So when the commotion started, Narinoa gratefully took to it and threw himself into the task of getting ready. Of course that meant he was getting ready to march to another Hatching where anything could happen and the ghosts would likely follow him there as well but he'd do his best to focus on happier things. Like combing his hair. Yes, sure, that was always fun with how much curl he had. At least the wincing with each tug was distracting.

When he couldn't put off that walk any longer, Narinoa tossed aside the comb and headed out... and then turned back for some water. He was parched and still felt out of sorts so the water he chugged back was just what the Healer ordered. Or probably not. He could hear L'gan and Sariel both lecturing him about needing food or how they would prescribe him something if he'd only ask. That thought amused him and helped keep his spirits up as he entered the grounds and spotted the spunky Healer already there and ready to go.

Narinoa slipped up beside Sariel and slung his arm around her shoulder in a friendly gesture. "Morning, Beauty. Ready to walk away with one of those shiny gals today?" If anyone was going to Impress one of those golds, it would be Sariel. She was so determined and head-strong that he felt she'd simply stare down one of them into Impressing her.

What was with all that humming? At first Katiryn thought her dream had shifted to a Hatching which meant a possible nightmare was incoming but this one didn’t feel the same. It felt much more real. Until she realised it was real.

“Shit! Oh shit!” She sat up with a start, frantically looking around the unfamiliar room she was in and then recalling she had decided to help R’dare keep his bed warm that night. She smacked him on the arm to help get him moving since he seemed to be doing a better job of ignoring the hums. Once he seemed to be awake, Katiryn bolted from the bed and started tossing her clothes back on.

“I have to go change! What if I’m late?” Would they keep her from entering if she didn’t get there along with everyone else? Stupid R’dare and his stupid smile and his stupidly hot body and his stupidly up high weyr… Still, she gave him a kiss on his cheek once she was dressed and then ran out the door.

She kept up that pace all the way down to the Candidate dorms and somehow managed to not die from the exertion as she went flying into her little shared room. She stripped and tossed on the ugly and uncomfortable robe in record time but her hair was a bit of a wild mess and that took longer than she wanted to spend on it as she fought some tangles. Eventually she won and her hair was braided back and she gave her robe a quick smoothing down of her hands before finally taking a deep breath to relax.

She wasn’t late and she looked as presentable as the robe would allow her to be. Smile in place, Katiryn left the area with a group of girls and she fell into an easy conversation of excitement and gossip over why the eggs were already wiggling away and who would Impress first or at all. It helped steady her nerves, as did her temporary roommate asking her where she had been all night. Katiryn only smiled and played up being innocent as she sauntered away with a grin to go join the other girls that were as set on gold as she was.

He woke up far more relaxed than he had been since coming to Fort. Spending the day with Mylo had done wonders for him and Dandioar was already awake when the humming began. Being awake at awful hours of the morning was a habit from home he'd never been able to shake since coming to be a candidate. The fact that hatches happened at all hours of the day and night didn't help matters either. He could feel the beginnings of excitement in his chest, the heat caused by his slight anxiety spread through his body and breath puffed out in short burst before he got it under control.

His feet were shoved into sturdy boots before his robes were tossed over his body. His fit, which was a miracle, but he'd made sure he brought the ones he had from Ista. Tigger was reminded to stay in the stands during the hatch, Dandi knew the little bronze would find one of the dragons he knew to sidle up to while they watched the hatch. One last tug of his robes and Dandioar made his way towards the hatchings sands.

He was nervous as he entered, tossing the garbage from his quick breakfast in the can made available and he skirted around to find a place as he nodded hellos to the candidates he knew. He didn't know what would happen today, would he impress? Would he go home empty-handed again? He didn't know and it made him nervous and he instantly regretted the pastry he'd sucked down. What if this hatch was being sneaky and ended up being exactly like Thallyath's? Dandi grimaced as he shuffled his feet. He didn't want to think it would, the touching hadn't been as crazy as Thallyath's but Dandi couldn't tell the future.

He shifted again as he waited.

Quinvalis woke with the first hum that reached his bed. He knew what that meant but it also didn’t seem right that it should be happening right then. Still, he got himself ready without much fuss and helped himself to something to eat when the baskets arrived. He tried asking the assistants what it meant and if everything was okay but he didn’t get much in the way of answers. Everything seemed fine and it wasn’t unreasonably early so nothing to worry about.

Since he didn’t know any better either, he shrugged and went along with what he was told. He had a feeling if something was truly wrong, it would show more on their faces and R’nya would be saying something by now. Quinvalis held the Weyrleader in high regard and knew he wouldn’t keep anything from them, especially if it would result in what Ista had a few months back. Quinvalis hated that Madiquel had to witness that and he still wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about her actually Impressing as well. But he knew Zezeth was doing a lot better thanks to their letters back and forth.

He followed the crowd into the grounds and shuffled around until he found a good spot that had a nice view of the eggs and where he could kind of people watch. He could see the Weyrleaders, a good portion of the Candidates, and a decent view of the stands. Not that he liked that most would have just as great of a view as him but he didn’t plan on doing anything to stand out—except maybe Impress. That would be nice.

Of fucking course he couldn't even get a proper night's rest because of those damned eggs. They were still better than Thallyath's lot but Kordiavis didn't have a high opinion of these ones either from the one egg he Touched. Yesterday. The Touching was fucking yesterday and here they were getting up before the sun because the little bastards couldn't even follow protocol.

He debated flipping off the assistant that came through to make sure they were moving but he refrained. He wasn't in Ista where people feared his mother so he had to follow the rules to some degree. Besides, he wasn't going to leave Mylorah in someone else's care when it all went to shit like nearly every other Hatching.

That didn't mean he was going to rush, however. He dressed, ran a comb through his hair, and then grabbed one of the muffins brought down to them to take his time on while he sucked back a cup of klah to help wake him up. He was yawning a lot more than not but slowly Kordiavis was starting to feel like a human again.

Once the mug was empty, he headed to the Sands and wasn't that surprised to see a fair amount of Candidates already there. Some people had way too much energy at this hour and were just excited in general about baby dragons. Sure, they were cute, in a murderous rampaging sort of way. All right, they were actually cute once they grew out of that brief phase but Kordiavis still wasn't nearly as anxious to meet them.

Not many of the out-of-towners had arrived in the stands yet, he noticed as he claimed a spot that was a good distance from the eggs and other Candidates but also gave him a clearer path to freedom if another gold wanted to rampage--and there were two this time to worry about. He didn't have to wonder if Tazikel would come, knowing T'ryn would be running around to get the lordling because Mylorah had requested it. Kordiavis hadn't seen him since leaving Tillek Hold after their very eventful end-of-turn celebrations and he wasn't sure how he'd feel about that either.

The day was going to suck and there was just no way around it.

She shoved her hair out of her face, the short locks had begun to grow out of control again but August wasn't sure she wanted to chop them off this time. What in the hell was that noise, she thought to herself as she tried to wake up, tried to get her eyes open. It continued, the deep thrumming hums and August's dark eyes sprung open when she realized what it was.

She stretched before she sat up, a tiny squeak coming out of her at the depth of the stretch and jumped from her bed. The hatching was starting and she frowned. She was pretty sure that everyone said that it wasn't going to happen for days. The touching just happened yesterday and August wasn't sure if she was ready for the hatching to start. Not that it mattered, she laughed at herself, the babies were obviously ready.

She stuffed her feet into shoes and her body into robes even as she was moving from her room. She'd just gotten completely together, hair scraped back into a short tail as she stepped onto the sands. That had been a close one, being late for a hatch was probably not the best thing to do and she shivered slightly in the heat. Some of the eggs were rocking and she accidentally bumped into another candidate on her way towards the eggs. "Sorry," she mumbled, embarrassed that she'd gotten distracted enough to run into someone. She was usually a lot more focused on things, but hatchings so far had always been enough to distract her.

She settled with the rest of the candidates, nodding to those she knew in passing and shuffled her feet to wait. She needed to make friends with these people, one of these days she was going to be a rider with them and it would only be the smart thing to do. Wouldn't it? She sighed and clasped her hands in front of her as she watched and waited.

It wasn’t the humming that woke him up but the obnoxious dragon in his head that wouldn’t stop pestering him about eggs and a girl that needed to get moving. Slowly R’dare woke, eyes struggling to stay open even as he spotted a frantic Katiryn beside him. “Huh? Ow!” The smack to his arm really wasn’t that hard but it was enough to jolt him further into a wakeful state and he sat up as she rushed around getting dressed.

Aradissicath says the eggs are ready early. You need to get moving yourself if you want to watch it. Kadaisicalth grumbled, none too pleased either at being up early but his voice still joined in with the others as they hummed the announcement for all to hear.

R’dare gave something that resembled a wave when Katiryn kissed his cheek and vanished and then he sighed as he curled back under the blanket. It was too early and he hadn’t had enough sleep yet so maybe a little more wouldn’t hurt anyone? The growl of annoyance proved him wrong and R’dare finally got up and found some fresh clothes to put on.

Kadaisicalth dropped him off at the dining cavern before heading to the Sands himself and R’dare practically sleep-walked his way in to find something to eat. Or, more importantly he just wanted klah. Luckily, the kitchen staff had already been up and prepping breakfast so some odds and ends were out for any hungry people heading to the Hatching and a big pot of klah was ready to go. He thankfully chugged back the drink, debated another, decided against it, and then headed out again feeling a bit more alive.

He slipped in and up the stands to an area he always liked to sit in regardless of Weyr. It was about halfway up, allowing a good view of everything but not getting too close to be in the way of the ‘important’ visitors that wanted to be up close and personal. After some of the Hatchings, he was surprised anyone would want to be in the first few rows.

As usual, he held the spots around him for R’dal and a girl he had said he wanted to bring if he could find her. That whole sentence didn’t make any sense and he was the one that thought it. He’d figure it out later and instead focused on smiling and waving to various friends that were Standing and giving them encouragement with thumbs up. The fact that his sister was Standing again also made him extra proud and a bit worried, as each one did that she attended. She had been on the Sands for both of the killing sprees and she had been standing beside the one in Ista that… he didn’t want to think about that poor girl right then, not when Dareji was amongst the hungry babies again.

When Dareji looked his way, R’dare stood up and made a big heart with his hands over his head. When she laughed, and no doubt rolled her eyes, R’dare felt his big brother duties were going well that morning and sat back down. He’d embarrass her again in a bit but let her think he was done.

R’dal was wide awake as soon as Edath nudged him to let him know about the Hatching. He knew it was early but that was okay! Everyone was just so darn excited that even the babies couldn’t contain themselves anymore! He wasted no time in getting dressed and then tossed the riding straps on Edath as well since they had to go find a certain runner.

How was he going to do that?

Aederyn was stationed out of Station… something, in the Fort area at least so there was a good chance she was around but R’dal decided he’d better borrow a firelizard to send word to her. She’d need to get ready anyway. So he dashed out the door and down the hall to a friend that he knew had a trained flit that would help him. A few minutes later and the letter was sent and he was left to wait for a response.

When it finally came, R’dal was practically squeaking from excitement and headed back to Edath so they could pick up Aederyn and bring her to the Hatching. A Hatching that not only were friends Standing at but people he Searched as well! The day was turning into one of his dream days where everything he wanted happened and he hoped he didn’t jinx it by thinking that! He had to stop thinking about too many details just in case.

Once Aederyn was acquired, R’dal guided her up the stands to where a waving R’dare was waiting. “This is R’dare of blue Kadaisicalth and this is Aederyn, she’s a super cool runner!” R’dal still hadn’t gotten over her craft and liked telling people about it. “You can help me tell her about what’s going on and who certain people are. Oh and F’drel should be coming soon but I’m not sure if he’s bringing any of his siblings.” That said, he shooed a couple of people further down the bench so he had more room in case F’drel came with anyone and then sat down with beside Aederyn with R’dare on her other side.

"Morning!" she said, grinning up at him. "My hopes are pretty high this time around. I really enjoyed the Touching as both of the golds seemed to really like me. I wish I'd stayed to touch all of the other eggs just to say hello." She would have but just the two golds were enough of a Touching for her. Tilting her head slightly, she couldn't keep the sunshine and excitement from her face if it.

"What about you?" she asked quietly, reaching to touch his arm gently. "Have an egg you've an eye on?"

There were other things to ask, too, but not at a Hatching. Thallyath's Hatching had left all remaining candidates on edge and she was forever trying her best to check up on them and process it herself. She still had discomforting dreams, though she had Semath and L'gan and even her children to find comfort with. Not everyone was so fortunate. There was so much she was thankful for and so much more to come.

This was the first Hatching she'd been to that had a golden egg in it -- well, an incredible two. They were so full of energy and seemed like wonderful young things, even if they were early, which worried her just a little. The golds seemed just fine, though.

Fediletch realized someone was shaking him awake and groaned, reaching up to rub his eyes before sitting up and blinking around at all the commotion. Everyone was rushing, pulling on their candidate robes, and the sheer amount of chatter made it hard to discern what was going on. Someone was telling him to get ready so he got up, shuffling over to change into his ever slightly too small candidate robes. It was just yesterday that they had touched the eggs and he'd met some of the baby dragons, so why were they getting dressed up?

He barely managed to comb his hair before shuffling out the door and supplemented it with his fingers as he looked around, still confused, still curious. It didn't quite dawn on him until they were halfway to the sands and he started to pay attention to the buzz around him that the eggs were getting ready to hatch. Fetch's eyes widened and a grin became plastered on his face. The dragons were hatching! The babies would be out in the world and picking their riders and he hoped he would be one of them.

"They're hatching! It's early isn't it?" There were a few looks, a quick reminder from someone he didn't recognize that yes, that was what everyone had been talking about and welcome to the conversation. Fetch brushed it off, still grinning and too excited that he was going to his first hatching to care about much else. He ran his fingers through his hair to try and straighten it further once they reached the sands. There were so many people in attendance, he was sure the babies would be able to find someone they likes, he just hoped the ones he talked to the other day hadn't found any they liked more than him. But if they did that was fine, maybe he could still visit and say hi to the babies afterwards.

It had been too early when T'ryn had woken her up, it felt like she'd only just gone to bed after getting distracted with working on one of her more interesting leather projects she'd recently picked up. It was probably the least pleased Cazan had ever been to see the bronzerider (though even then she still managed to give him a small sleepy hug) as he interrupted a dream that starred himself. He put up with her quiet grumbling in his gentlemanly way (that almost made her even more irritated in her irrational morning state) and made sure she was out of bed and had water and something small to snack on for breakfast.

Cazan thought the hatching was supposed to be later! She got dressed as her brother as quickly as she could since he was supposed to be there for Katiryn. Hopefully the woman would get the gold dragon she wanted and then Cazan would make a lovely set of leathers for her and have another walking advertisement for her wares wandering the land.

The trip between was not any better than it had been before, she still had her arms around T'ryn in a death grip, still kept a wary eye out for anything strange in the terrible black void, and she was quite glad when they came out of the other side unscathed. They took seats at the front of the stands to try and have a good view and she took a moment to marvel at the spectacle. So many people! So many dragons all around them! And there were so many eggs out on the sands. Cazan shifted her weight slightly so that the side of her thigh was just barely touching T'ryn's. "Are there always so many eggs? And when are we supposed to cheer? Unless there's no cheering. This is a serious sort of event right?"

Helyna, wake up. Aradissicath says we can come back to the sands!

Helyna stirred reluctantly, her brain sluggish in the early morning and particularly so this chilly morning. The last thing she wanted to do was leave the warmth of her bed so early in the day, even for the promise of the heat of the hatching grounds. “What, already? I thought she’d banished you till after the Hatching because your bored sighs were annoying her.” Iliyith had been directed to the grounds immediately after her flight last month; the Weyrleaders seemed determined to avoid another surprise after the mess of her first clutch. While Aradissicath was normally tolerant, apparently even her patience had its limits.

She yawned widely, groping for a robe and her feet searching for slippers to avoid the chill of the stone floor. She really needed to get a new rug for the bedroom, she thought fuzzily, her mind losing track of the conversation.

Exactly! She says the eggs are hatching and we can watch. excitement and envy tinged her mind voice as Iliyith thought of the 40 eggs on the sands. She hoped to have such a spectacular clutch herself! We have to stay out of the way though and I said we would. The gold informed her rider mildly. Helyna stared uncomprehending at her dragon, pulling her robe tighter against a draft, then suddenly she heard the humming. “What? How is that possible? They only had the Touching yesterday for goodness sake.” Iliyith gave the impression of a shrug before pressing her nose to Helyna’s middle. Please just go get ready? I don’t want her to change her mind.

Stifling another yawn, Lyna slipped back into her room, finding something suitable to wear and washing her face. She could feel Iliyith’s impatience, so she didn’t try anything fancy with her hair, just ran a brush through to get the worst of the tangles out and pinned it back away from her eyes. A cup of klah helped perk her up a bit, and a muffin and second cup hastily consumed outside the grounds had her in a much more pleasant mood as she stepped inside.

Iliyith had already found a perch and was trying her hardest to keep still, and Helyna hid a smile at her dragon’s nerves. She quickly got out of the way of the chaos of the assembling candidates, finding a seat in the stands with a decent view. Iliyith, darling? When they arrive will you tell Niath where Tala can find me? She’d mentioned she was planning to come.

Cazan's reaction had been the much the same when Casa came to wake him up. T'ryn didn't want to be up at ew o'clock but it didn't seem like he had much of a choice. His hair was sticking up every which way which Casa was nice enough to point out as he tried to dress and ignore falling back into bed for a bit more sleep. He did manage to ask Syrendryth to tell Rhezalth about the Hatching in case N'mor wanted to go cheer on their friends.

What ended up waking him up was the realisation he had double booked himself. Syrendryth was more than capable of carrying three people but he didn't want to show up to Tillek and have someone make a fuss that he was taking their second son along with a leather worker--even if Caz was also a second son. He mentioned the problem to Casa and said he'd have to make two trips but her eyes lit up with mischievous delight and offered to get Tazikel instead. T'ryn wondered what she was up to but thanked her and went to get Cazan.

That had proven to be interesting as he didn't want to just barge into her room while she was sleeping. He ended up quietly slipping in when his knock was ignored and then had a fun battle of getting her up. Payback for his own slow start, he supposed. After they both had a quick bite to eat, they were off and soon having a smooth landing in Fort.

They grabbed a stretch of bench up front that would have enough room for Casa and Tazikel, and maybe N'mor and Z'rin if they came or their dads if they wanted to join them. But none of that mattered as he was hit with question after question and easily distracted from the seating arrangement he was building in his head.

Luckily, he was used to Tazikel's questions from the Ista Hatching so he was doubly prepared for pointing out what he felt was pretty standard things and being somewhat prepared for the curve ball questions. "This is the typical size for Aradissicath and a couple of the other large golds. Each seem to have their own average and it's probably based on their partner as well. Aradissicath has always been won by Xyreith," T'ryn pointed out the two large dragons sitting proudly to the side of the clutch and then pointed out their riders whom were also the leadership.

"Cheering is kind of frowned upon. Dragons will never hurt a human unless perhaps if their own mate is in danger but the rules are a bit different to a freshly hatched dragonet that hasn't bonded yet and is hungry. You don't want to startle them which could cause an accident," or even have the poor dragonet go between from the surprise and sense of danger. "Sometimes you can go congratulate them after the Hatching but you usually have to wait for the party later on after they've napped."

He went on to explain a few more important rules and details while they still had time before the excitement began. When Mylorah finally glanced their way, he gave her a smile and wave and fingers crossed in hopes she would Impress this time. He did much the same for his friends that were out there as well and T'ryn pointed out some that he thought Cazan might like, including some riders that were in the stands with a promise to introduce her sometime if she wanted.

Truthfully, he didn't have time for Hatchings at his own Weyr let alone at the others. But M'ris not only wanted to keep strong relations with the other Weyrs, he had to go support his daughter, Dimarna, who was Standing again and his son, R'dal, who had Searched a few of the Candidates. It wasn't like everyone was attending the Hatching anyway so work would still be done at Benden if a bit slower that day and his organizing documents for his replacement would still be there when he returned.

But fuck! Couldn't anyone let him sleep for once?

M'ris grumbled as the firelizard did its best to get his attention before finally cracking open an eye to see Muffin. Of course it was that little shit that Rhaedalyn would send to him. Sometimes he wondered if they were all just fooled by the charming idiot routine she did and she was actually the evil mastermind behind what Fort did. He took the paper and shooed the damned blue away and it vanished, likely back to Rhaedalyn so he could deliver more messages.

He knew without even looking that it had to be about the Hatching despite what day it was. Unless some devastating emergency hit their region, Rhaedalyn wouldn't be bothering him before the sun was up. Upon reading it he sighed and returned to bed to wake Ameris as he knew she would want to go as well. She was so sexy upon waking with her hair disheveled and the sleepy moans she gave that M'ris had to fight not to just keep her in bed for a few more hours and forget about the Hatching. But they were both getting far too responsible the longer they held their titles and M'ris left her to get ready as he did the same.

Mosiath, alert your Second, all of the golds, and ...Ghaeth and Halmoirth that Fort is having their Hatching a bit early for those that wish to go. He knew Ghaeth would not only tell K'tir but everyone else he knew, just as Halomirth would do with F'drel and all of her friends. He only ever had to get word to either one of them and the entire Weyr would know in record time.

When he was ready and had given proper instructions to his Second, M'ris headed out about an hour after receiving word. A good number had already arrived and he was always impressed by the size of Candidates Fort could handle but with the size of the clutch, that wasn't a bad thing. He supposed he would have to get used to numbers increasing as well once he was in Benden.

He spotted Dimarna as soon as he sat down and she waved excitedly at him and he returned the gesture. He glanced around the stands and found his son further up, talking rather animatedly to a pretty redhead and R'dare and M'ris smiled but left them alone. He'd catch up with R'dal later and congratulate him on successful Searches and see if any of them had Impressed.

For now, he was going to shut off his brain, stop thinking about numbers, and simply enjoy a Hatching.

Indivara murmured sleepily, curling tighter into V’ler, tangling their legs and tucking her head under his chin. It was far too early to be waking up, and though she could feel Venseth was awake and curious, she was refusing to wake up, too. If it was important, someone else could handle it, and if it was one of their Weyrlings, Venseth could handle it. Indivara grumbled when she felt V’ler slip out from under her clinging body, and she gave him a weird expression, a strange combination of a frown and a pout, her eyes almost crossed from being more asleep than awake. “What is it?” she asked, mewling softly as she stretched out in the bed, blinking up at V’ler when he said it was Fort Hatching. Indivara sat up swiftly, combing her right hand through her hair to get it off her face as she swore. “But they’re not due for …” she fell off, mumbling to herself about dragons, and ignoring the look of ‘I know that’ that V’ler threw her.

Dressing quickly in a blue winter gown, sturdy boots, and pulling a cloak around her shoulders, Indivara followed V’ler out to the dragons, quickly getting both their blues into their riding straps and mounting up. Venseth gave the directions, and Indivara flashed a quick smile at V’ler before they vanished between, reappearing in the chill pre-dawn at Fort Weyr. Indivara shivered where she was sitting on Venseth, and let the dragon pick his own way to the Sands, glancing back to make sure that V’ler and Veeth had come through between unscathed. They had, of course, but Indivara worried because V’ler worried, and she’d spent enough time studying to be a Weyrlingmaster, and training her own class, to know that such thoughts could prove deadly.

When Venseth landed, Indivara dismounted and straightened her skirt and cloak; she wasn’t prone to dressing up, but it was an outfit K’rin had put together for her to wear to the Hatching, and Indivara was less inclined to put herself at the mercy of his disappointment or displeasure in her not wearing the clothing he’d worked so hard to tailor for her. Besides, she was happy to punch anyone that made a comment about it. Patting Venseth on the neck, Indivara watched him join some of his friends, and she linked her arm through V’ler’s and let him lead them to wherever it was he decided he’d be taking the records of the event from. Usually, they sat on Veeth, so Indivara expected to end up there, after V’ler had made any greetings he felt were needed.

Glancing in the direction of the eggs, and seeing them rock, Indivara wondered what had caused them to hatch so early; she’d never been around a clutch that was so oddly out of the order of expectations. Of course, there was usually some variation in the due date, but this much? Indivara pursed her lips, then smiled and waved at a friend, letting her worry about the Hatching get swept away with less fearful thoughts. They did nothing for the anxiety curling through her stomach, though, and Indivara hoped desperately that this Hatching would be as mundane as all Aradissicath’s previous ones had been.

The Hatching is starting! Fort babies! Ghaeth excitedly exclaimed to K'tir and then all of his best friends and a few others that lived near him. Everyone needed to know!

K'tir wasn't so sure about that. He groaned and hugged the pillow to his head despite knowing that wouldn't work at keep Ghaeth out. Honestly, it wasn't that much earlier than what he normally woke at but he had done a little entertaining that night and thought he'd allow himself to sleep in a bit. Of course something would come up to keep that from happening. Since it was a Hatching that his sweet baby girl was Standing at, he naturally had to get up and kept the complaining to a minimum.

Despite that, he took his time with washing up and grabbing some breakfast. He knew rushing as soon as the news came wasn't necessary but he wasn't going to spend the next two hours dilly-dallying either. But about an hour after Ghaeth's wake up call the dragon was geared up and K'tir could see some others out on their ledges preparing as well while the rest of the Weyr took their time with their normal morning routines.

At Fort, Ghaeth went up to a ledge where he saw a friend and K'tir gave R'nya a little two finger teasing salute as he walked by. It'd been too long since he last pestered that Weyrleader but K'tir had been trying to stay out of the way with Benden Weyr being such a strong focus and stress-maker. But soon. Soon he'd go back to randomly popping in on R'nya and flirting with the man just because it amused him.

He saw Katiryn with a group of friends and called out to her, smiling with so much pride at the woman she was becoming. Kind, popular, and beautiful... there was no way a gold would pass her by. He didn't know if these ones would be the right match but K'tir knew his daughter was destined for greatness but it just might not happen that day. He'd keep thinking positively for her but he would also be ready to be a shoulder to cry on if it didn't work out.

Once Ghaeth got word of the Hatching, it didn’t take long for all of Ista to know about it and A’tay was thankful for that. Mylorah was Standing for it but also his little sister Wynera had decided to start Standing as well and he wouldn’t miss seeing her out there for anything. He also knew one of F’drel’s sisters was Standing and while he was still slowly hanging out with the greenrider that had been so kind to him, A’tay had figured out enough to know the man was protective of his actual siblings and the friends that A’tay decided were like adopted siblings. F’drel just gave off big brother vibes and that was probably why he was drawn to him and opening up a bit more around him.

But since they both had sisters on the Sands, A’tay was feeling especially close to F’drel that morning and after he dressed, he headed over to see the greenrider and offer his services to help bring one of his other sisters along if they wanted to go. That ended up being a whole ordeal but F’drel sorted it out by telling which sister was riding which dragon and that was the end of it. A’tay wondered if maybe he should have just gone ahead and left the green pair to bring the girls but he was committed to it now.

As they worked their way up the stands to where an excited R’dal was frantically waving F’drel over, A’tay saw T’ryn with a group of his friends and B’jin and R’nd sitting close by them as well. He always sat with his family but they all seemed to be in their own little worlds and enjoying themselves so he continued up with F’drel and his sisters and shyly sat down beside Maleah. Since she was a lot more outgoing than he was, she asked him some questions about the Hatching and who he knew that was Standing and A’tay appreciated her kindness. He also happily pointed out both of his sisters and they fell into easy banter about little sisters.

Rhaedalyn was surprised by the turnout given the hour and it being days early but she supposed that was just the power of baby dragons. Everyone was drawn to event as they hoped for loved ones to Impress or just to see the miracle of a bond form. Sometimes seeing the young girls made her recall all the times she Stood, and failed, and then finally Aradissicath came along and picked her. Out of everyone, a dragon had found her special and she’d never forget that moment or how she felt.

Aradissicath crooned softly at her and Rhaedalyn placed a hand on her dragon’s side as a small hug. She didn’t want to lose her composure and start crying in front of everyone. No doubt everyone would think she knew something was wrong with the clutch and a panic would rush through the crowd! She didn’t need hysterics happening and knew Aradissicath would not tolerate such madness on her Sands. So she held herself together… until an egg started wobbling more than it had been.

There had still been signs of the dragonets stirring but Rhaedalyn worried people were arriving too quickly and they would be waiting until lunch with the way the rocking had slowed. Maybe it had all been a false alarm to begin with and everyone would have to leave and return another day. But no, at least one little dragonet was determined to show itself as the egg toppled over and a gasp followed by a hush went around the grounds. Everyone had seen it and now everyone as invested in what would come.

It took several minutes but finally they had their first dragon of the Hatching and Rhaedalyn glanced at R’nya to see his reaction to Brown01 setting the tone of the day. She personally didn’t believe in the superstition that a bronze as the first to hatch was good luck and green was bad. She figured for those that did believe in that nonsense, a brown would be a decent enough start and she smiled as she watched it stride with purpose to a group of boys where he eventually walked away with his lifemate in tow.

In rapid succession Green01 and Green02 quickly followed their brother and Rhaedalyn again was trying not to giggle at how close it was to a green-opener. Honestly, Aradissicath came from a clutch of all greens and look how wonderfully she turned out and the clutch as a whole? Both of the little greens ran in opposite directions of each other to find the boys that were meant for them.

Several minutes passed of just the eggs rocking. Rhaedalyn swore she could feel the nervous energy coming from the Candidates. She knew they were excited as well but nerves would take over in the lulls of stillness as they wondered if they would be next to walk away with a dragon. She almost hated having so many Candidates, knowing most of them wouldn’t luck out that day but it helped ensure all the babies found someone so it was just a sucky situation.

Bronze01 agreed as he took that moment to break free, spilling in a mess of limbs onto the sand. He got to his feet, looking somewhat annoyed at the whole ordeal and did his best to saunter away from his far too slow siblings and towards a boy that seemed far too afraid. But after a moment, his face relaxed and he flicked a piece of shell free of his dragon’s head and they left the area.

Another egg caught her attention but it seemed to be struggling enough that it ended up not being the one to hatch next. Rhaedalyn was holding her breath for that one as Blue01 made his quiet debut. She nearly missed the Impression but looked up in time to see the dragonet slowly moving between groups of boys before finally finding the one he sought out.

Green03 finally made her way out of the egg, pushing back the stubborn shell, only to fall face first into the sand. A few giggles came from around the Candidates but a boy stepped forward telling them all to stuff it as he helped the green to her feet. She nuzzled his side and they walked off together but not before the boy flipped off the group that had found it funny.

The next to make an appearance did so with far more gusto than expected as Brown02 burst onto scene with a mighty kick that sent pieces of shell flying and bouncing off of his siblings’ eggs surrounding him. But he was free and he wasn’t letting anything else stand in his way as he took a few stiff steps and then galloped directly toward his mate that was now left standing alone as everyone near him took several steps away.

Kel arrived on the sands like many others, half asleep but excited no less. She was surprised the eggs were already hatching, they had JUST touched them! She imagined they were in for quite the long day, considering how early it was and how many eggs there were. She didn't care, she wanted nothing more than to see all the hatchlings find their intended life partner, even if she wasn't one of them. Then again, there were a lot of hatchlings here so she let herself have some hope.

It wasn't long before things started happening and a nice brown toppled from his egg and almost immediately went off to find his partner. Two greens followed the brown and both of them ran, in only a way a hatchling can, to make their choices. "Oooh!", she said as a bronze broke free of his shell after several minutes went by with no action and wandered off to find one of the boys. She liked the bronze dragons because they were so big. She couldn't imagine having to climb up to sit on some of them. Then again, the gold dragons were often just as big. Her thoughts were pulled back to the present as a blue dragon hatched, followed by a sweet little green who faceplanted right out of the shell. The poor thing didn't have to wait long for her bonded to help her though and Kelian was glad for it.

Another egg broke open, well more like it shattered in glorious triumph as the brown hatchling within made himself known, then went running as fast as his newly hatched legs could toward the boys waiting, most of which scattered when they realized where the brown was headed. She hoped he could stop in time... Kel smiled a bit then took a chance to look around the stands. She thought to look for her family, but there were so many faces she wasn't quite sure where to look first. But until another egg hatched, she looked for them.

There was something absolutely wonderous about watching dragonets Impress. Finding their lifemates seemed to be an easy task for the first seven - a lovely bronze among them. The first brown and first of the clutch to hatch found his lifemate after a good search which Sariel applauded him for (just not aloud) and watched the two greens race off to find their own. They made really good time, too. The blue Impressed as well, though it was pretty quiet. A dignified sort, perhaps, definitely one that was careful in his choices.

She wanted to cheer for the boy who defended the third green and walked off the sands with her - even the rude gesture made her proud of him. He was going to be a fantastic rider in her estimation. If he could defend his dragon like that, she thought he'd be the kind to stand for no bullying anyone.

The next was a brown who knew exactly what he wanted and his rider didn't seem to fear his approach, either. While everyone else scattered, he held his own! Her nose itched and her eyes wanted to tear with pride. So far, that was the dominating feeling with these first few hatchlings. Sariel looked back toward the eggs once more, wondering what was in store for the rest of the clutch. It was forever fascinating to see the ways each dragon found their lifemates, some took longer than others, some knew right away. This clutch was warm, a different feeling than the last she'd been to, and the air was thick with anticipation, humming, and life - not dread.

That realisation helped her settle the shadows leftover from Thallyath's Touching and subsequent Hatching. With a soft breath out she rocked back slightly to settle her booted feet into the hot sands a little better. It might be ages before the next egg cracked or moments if those last few were anything to go by.

His back straightened as the first egg cracked shell. Would he impress immediately? Eyes crinkled with a grin when the brown finally made an appearance. Brown was better than green he heard but not as good as gold or bronze being first. Dandioar wasn't sure if he held up to all the superstition that most of the weyrs did but he wasn't going to talk shit about a tradition or superstition the weyrs had. Why take the chance that his luck would run out? Dandi just wanted the chance to stand and impress a dragon, no sense in making things that much difficult for himself. He grinned when one of the eggs he'd touched cracked shell to disgorge a green followed by another.

He knew a green wasn't for him and didn't bother getting excited as the two green beelined for the boys, he made himself be still as the brown and both greens that appeared found who they wanted. A bronze finally appeared and then a blue, Dandioar nodded with pleasure. Already a nice looking bunch of weyrlings and was pleased when bronze and blue found their lifemates. Just as much as he knew green wasn't for him, Dandi knew bronze was beyond anything he could ever hope for. The blue was followed by another green and then a brown.

An excitable brown that bolted for the boys. His entrance had been quite comical and Dandioar moved out of his way as the brown found his own. He could only wait as he ever had. Patiently.

Quinvalis was all nerves once the first dragonet appeared. It was time! Once again he was feeling put on the spot as he knew how important Impressing was and to the right colour. He had so many people rooting for him—which in itself was odd but he was slowly getting comfortable with that—but that meant more people could see him fail. He really hated this.

But he stood strong and patiently as each dragon appeared, holding his breath every time one looked to maybe come in his direction. He didn’t want to make any sudden movements to scare one and he didn’t even want to think too loudly at one and confuse it or draw the attention of an irritated baby. However, when the brown came running towards his group, Quinvalis took a few quick steps away from it, afraid it was already provoked and looking for someone to take out its aggressions on. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case as the brown Impressed without incident and another pair walked off.

So far so good, he supposed. He was still alone but in one piece so Quinvalis decided to take that as a positive as he watched a few other eggs crack and wobble.

Katiryn waved excitedly at her daddy when he arrived. She knew he’d come no matter how weird this clutch was suddenly being with the timing. A glance around the area had her finding Ghaeth and the silly brown’s presence brought her some peace and comfort. She loved that dragon and always clung to him when she was little and not much had changed as an adult—though she didn’t cling quite as literally anymore. If she was going to Impress, Ghaeth had to be there as much as her daddy. She was a bit sad her brother couldn’t come but she knew he was still battling a fever from a letter that arrived with Bean the day before when he wished her luck on the Touching. If She didn’t Impress that day, maybe she could just blame it on her brother saying the dragons knew how much it meant to her to have her family there.

Since none of the first eggs were one of the golds, Katiryn didn’t pay too much attention to colour but she was curious about which boys were Impressing so she moved a bit so she could see more of the group. She smiled and cheered quietly at some of the Impressions and rolled her eyes at another since she knew the guy and he was kind of a jerk and would no doubt be insufferable with a dragon. Now she really wanted one of the cranky golds so they could team up and keep him in line.

She was fantasising about that when the brown broke free, startling her and causing her to gasp as she watched it run. Thankfully, it looked to just be enthusiastic about finding his mate and Katiryn could respect that. Not that she wanted another dragon charging at her and she briefly flashed back to Bedith’s first clutch with the angry gold. Mylorah had pulled her and Dimarna out of danger and Katiryn still didn’t know how she would ever thank her enough for that.

Yet there she was at another Hatching, putting her life potentially on the line again and Mylorah wasn’t standing near her this time. Well, shit. Maybe she could sidle over a bit closer just in case? No, she was older and wiser now and would certainly be ready if a gold came charging at her once more. Hopefully. Was it possible to outrun a hatchling?

Since it’s early that just means you have less time to worry! Halomirth pointed out, quite logically to her mind, as F’drel continued to panic over how early the Hatching was - the Touching had only been yesterday! - and what that might mean about the Clutch itself and how likely his sister was to get hurt. Though Miri was admittedly right that it meant he didn’t have a full week to run through every possible thing that could go wrong at least three times a day - death, dismemberment, Impressing a green - he now had to do all that worrying in the span of a few hours. Wonderful.

He didn’t even have to send word to Kalea and Maliah, they showed up at his door before F’drel had asked Miri to reach out to them - he was going to let them sleep in while he got ready, but they clearly had other ideas. In no way had he been expecting A’tay to show up at his weyr as well, but F’drel wasn’t going to just send him away once he arrived. He did have to settle who would be riding which dragon to the Hatching - both girls loved Miri, but riding in on a bronze was so cool they both wanted to do it. F’drel was tempted to let A’tay take both of them, but he’d only offered to take one and F’drel didn’t think he could handle not having at least one of them with him. Ultimately, F’drel decided Kalea would pester A’tay too much, ask him invasive questions right before jumping between, so Maliah got rewarded for having a more sensible head with riding the bronze dragon. She beamed, and Kalea pouted and whined, though she stopped with a sigh after a minute because she knew F’drel wouldn’t change his mind and she wanted to go to the Hatching.

As soon as they got to the Hatching, Halomirth went off to curl up with whatever blue of the day, and F’drel found himself being waved over by R’dal, as usual. His friend was sitting with R’dare and a young woman F’drel didn’t know. Probably the runner he had met recently and lost his weyrbred mind about, R’dal had said he was hoping to bring her to the Hatching. He ushered his sisters over to the seats R’dal had saved for them - F’drel appreciated he’d remembered the girls - and was surprised to find A’tay following them. Didn’t he usually sit with his family? Not that F’drel minded, but it was unusual. Had something happened? Was A’tay having issues with one of them? F’drel would have to find out later, make sure A’tay was alright. For the moment, he was preoccupied with finding Ferra on the Sands and not losing sight of her until the last egg had hatched.

There wasn’t much time between the excited brown and the next Impression. Blue02 and Blue03 seemed to crack shell at the same time. Rhaedalyn hoped the Harpers had better eyes than she did to catch that if they were tracking hatching order. She supposed Impression order was probably the most logical way and it seemed Blue03 was on his way to being the next one when he got tangled up as he sorted out his limbs and fell, as graceful as his mother. Aradissicath snorted but didn’t deny she still had her own clumsy moments as she watched Blue02 cautiously approach a boy and stare up at him expectantly.

As that happened, a boy ran out to Blue03 to ask if he was okay and dust away some sand that was sticking to his dragon. Aradissicath swelled with pride at the match. Her babies always chose well.

Several dragonets couldn’t seem to hold in their excitement any longer and all around the clutch cracking was heard as a sea of green seemed to sweep through, sending three girls free. But most notably, unfortunately for the girls, was Gold01 had broken free alongside them. Rhaedalyn saw the girls shift in anticipation as the gold took a moment to clean herself free of some lingering pieces of egg and in that time Green04 had found her mate in a good man standing on the opposite side of the girls.

That was all the time Gold01 needed to deem herself ready for her mate but as she approached the group of female Candidates, Green05 came barrelling towards them as well which resulted in the two dragonets colliding. It wasn’t pretty and Rhaedalyn winced as they tussled a bit, though she felt it was more they were trying to get control of their limbs and detangle themselves than any actual malicious intent toward the other.

That didn’t stop the Candidates from backing up as the dragonets moved closer to them and some shoving started. Apparently it was every girl for herself as some panicked and pushed other Candidates aside as they tried to put distance between them and the fighting. One girl ended up falling over and while Rhaedalyn could see someone trying to get to her, the fighting pair was closer and claws met exposed leg, raking down and drawing blood.

The pair separated after that as Gold01 gave a shriek, clearly upset and went to the injured girl that seemed to be her bonded. Green05 shook herself off and, ignoring her sister, went to her own mate, mewling sadly about what had happened.

Green06 had hidden behind the eggs during the fight and now that it was over, slowly creeped out and towards the man that seemed just as anxious to get to her after all of that commotion. She was happy for them and hoped they would be okay after a little food and a nap. Emotions would be high with all of them but that little green looked particularly traumatised.

When Brown03 made his entrance, it was nothing like his brother of minutes earlier. He seemed a lot more subdued as he wriggled his way out of the shell but he was just as determined to get to his mate as he strode with purpose—though he didn’t run, perhaps already knowing how bad an idea that would be—and came to a stop before two men that stared at him, then each other, and finally one dropped to his knees to hug the dragon.
