The trip had been awful, too long with nothing to do but ride, too long with her thoughts. By the time Cazan reached her destination she had even forgotten the details of the fight with her brother, only remembered the smug look on his face, his entirely too relaxed demeanor, and the fact that she'd threatened to ride out and find a job at Ista Weyr. Cazelarias would have to do his own work, and then he'd be sorry. Except he wouldn't; nothing would get done without her there. The thought had popped up rather frequently during her trip, and each time had been almost enough to make her turn back. No, she reminded herself firmly, give it a month or so. That or until mother sent someone after her. Father would be too busy to even notice she'd gone missing again, Cazonel would be occupied helping father, so that made her twin the most likely candidate to be sent off to fetch her back home (and likely meet some new nice young man her mother had found to introduce her too in hopes of finally marrying her off). Odds were good he'd just take it as an excuse to have a vacation while he waited for her to return on her own.

And she would return, but not before taking a look around the Weyr and maybe get to see a dragon up close while she was exploring the potential for work. Maybe she'd even like it enough to try and come back as herself to get a job. At the very least Cazan would be able to make some contacts, spread her brother's name and a good reputation for his goods out a bit further. She checked her outfit to ensure she still looked like her brother before she led her runnerbeast to the stables. The beast was secure, she had her pack containing a sampling of wares and some tools, she had the knot marking her as a journeyman leather worker set properly on her shoulder, now she just had to take a look around and find work. With that thought she finally gave Ista Weyr a proper look. The moment Cazan spotted a dragon flying off (much closer than she'd seen one before!) her mood lifted and she found herself looking around in wonder, gawking like a country bumpkin at their first fancy dinner party.

Cazan shook her head as she refocused. There would be time to gawk like a tourist later, for now she set her goal on finding a friendly looking dragonrider to see if she could get a feel for the business opportunities. Maybe if she was lucky she could get a proper tour as well. She shouldered her bag, took a look around, and spotted a likely rider to walk towards and try to flag over with a friendly wave. He didn't seem too busy, but what did she really know about riders after all? Worst case she'd be directed somewhere else and find another stranger to talk to. She cleared her throat, did a few test hums to make sure her voice was deep enough and then called out in a practiced masculine voice, "Hello there! Have a moment?"

Katiryn watched with curiosity the rider enter the Weyr and proceed to put away his horse. That wasn’t necessarily odd, but it wasn’t normal either. Usually they had riders or caravans come through on a schedule and from what she could figure, this wasn’t one of them. It became more apparent when the rider emerged and proceeded to look around utterly lost. She smiled, watching the man from where she stood, having stopped her trek across the Bowl when the horse appeared.

When the man called out a greeting, trying to get someone’s attention, Katiryn finally broke her silence and giggled as she made her way over to the stranger. “He won’t answer you,” she called when within a more respectable distance that didn’t require yelling. “He’s a bronzerider and thinks he’s too good to speak to those of us that don’t have a dragon. Well, I assume you aren’t a dragonrider since you came in on a horse,” she teased lightly with a smile, coming to a stop before him.

She took a moment to take in his appearance and judged him to be quite handsome. No, pretty. Katiryn didn’t think anything of that, having seen Casa’s Lord Azrin and Mylorah’s Lord Tazikel, both of which definitely qualified as pretty just as easily as they did handsome and sexy. Could this be her Lord, then? Her father would absolutely flip if he found out she was running around with a Lord! “But I’m Katiryn and very much free to help you with whatever you need.”

At first Cazan thought maybe she wasn't being loud enough and had been prepared to clear her throat and try for a proper boom at the risk of a raspy voice when she heard the young lady. A few quick thoughts ran through her head as she stopped and turned to look at the stranger; not a rider, friendly, cute. She went into autopilot as she returned with a warm smile of her own. Her voice was a well practiced low purr as she gave Katiryn a wink and said, "Well he might think he's too good for me, but he's left me with a far lovelier person to talk to."

It wasn't until after the words left her mouth that she remembered she was very far from home, which meant she was very far from her brother to tag in for a date. So as fun as flirting sounded, Cazan tempered the flirtation back down to warm friendliness as she introduced herself. "I'm Cazelarias, you can call me Caz or Cazzy though. I was hoping to see how my prospects were out here for work, I'm a journeyman leather worker," she puffed up proudly at that, still profoundly delighted by that achievement (even if it wasn't technically hers) and added, "if you could help me find a market or crafting hall I would be very grateful. Maybe I could even make something for you."

Katiryn flourished under compliments and flirting and found herself smiling a bit more and all the more encouraged to help the cute stranger. “Well, Cazzy,” if he was giving out adorable nicknames to use right from the get-go, she was going to use them—even if she was going to have to crush his hopes, “you might have to get back on your horse and head back to Ista Hold. Weyrs don’t have markets and I doubt you would consider a various room here and there for some of the crafters a proper Hall.” Obviously he had never been to a Weyr before, not just Ista’s, if he thought those were things he would find.

“But, I’m sure we could still use a leather worker here if you’re looking to stay a while. Riding leathers and boots are some things that are always needed in a Weyr.” She hoped she hadn’t dashed away his hopes too badly! He’d only just arrived and Katiryn didn’t want to see him leave just yet and wondered how she could help in both keeping his interest in staying and getting him approved to stay.

“Oh!” Impulsively, Katiryn took Caz’s hand, clasping it between hers as she gave a little bounce of excitement. “I could show you around so you can see how wonderful it is here and then I’ll introduce you to my daddy. He’s a brownrider and a good friend with Weyrleader M’ris so we’ll convince daddy you’re needed here and he’ll help convince the Weyrleader. Next thing you know, I’m showing you to your new room.” Oh yes, she liked that idea a lot.

Ah, well that was certainly a snag. Cazan had just assumed that Weyrs would be pretty similar to a Hold, but with more dragons. Not that she knew anything about dragons or dragonriders. Sure there were the stories of dragonmen kidnapping traders, but it had never happened to anyone she knew personally, always a friend of a friend's brother or someone else distant and far away enough that she never really thought (or cared if she was honest) about it too much. Oh and there was the talk that sexual deviance ran rampant in the Weyrs, which she was pretty sure was a gross exaggeration of the truth. Though as her new acquaintance continued to speak she found that there was one thing she got right at least. Boots and leathers were still needed.

That was enough to chase her momentary contemplative frown away. She would be fine with a work space she didn't have to share with a bunch of people. More than fine really. So far it sounded like there was potential for a less busy work area, not as much competition, a bunch of strangers who didn't know her brother so she could relax a bit more... there was definitely potential here.

The sudden grasp of her hands as Katiryn continued on caught her by surprise and brought her focus back to the conversation. "Oh you don't have to impose on your father for me. I was only planning on staying for about a month at most to look around and get a feel for the potential." But getting a tour did sound interesting, and though part of her thought it might lead to a bit more attention than she planned for she was curious enough to add with a warm smile, "Though I would be delighted if you showed me around."

A month? That was disappointing. What if they really hit it off? Katiryn would hate to have to say good-bye, even with the promise of visits. She had enough friends with dragons that she could get a lift to wherever Caz went next but it just wouldn’t be the same as simply crossing through the Weyr to find him. “Well, that just means I have a month to change your mind and convince you to stay even longer,” the pout that had formed turned back to a smile. She wouldn’t let such trivial things keep her down for long!

“And even if we don’t get daddy involved, you’ll still need the Weyrleader’s approval to stay here no matter the length of time. But I can’t imagine it’d be an issue since you would be providing a service and not just free-loading.” With M’ris and Ameris packing up to take over Benden Weyr soon, Katiryn didn’t think either of them would really care who wanted to stay in Ista Weyr anymore. But that wasn’t something to tell the new guy just yet.

“But first, your tour!” Katiryn linked her arm through his and then used her free hand to gesture to the entire Weyr. “Depending on what you’re interested in and how in depth you want to get, it could take a bit, but we can end in the Dining Cavern and grab a bite.” M’ris would be back from overseeing the Benden activities in the evening as well so it would be perfect.

It wasn't often that Cazan had to provide a proper escort for a lady, normally she was too busy working and the sporadic flirtatious encounters were usually rather short lived. At least she'd been escorted by gentleman often enough that after just a moment to adjust Katiryn's arm in her own she was able to make a passable and proper gentleman of herself as they toured the Weyr. She asked questions when she thought to, but for the most part she was so taken by the sights and the novelty of that she spent more time listening and watching than anything else. For a long time life had been all about work or getting through awkward mandatory social events to keep up appearances with her family until she could get back to work. Taking a tour of a new place and just hanging out was shockingly pleasant.

Though there was a tiny edge of nerves at the thought that she could be doing something more productive. She hid that behind a smile, dodging most questions about herself that weren't related to to her work and turning them around with a question about the Weyr, dragons, and even Katiryn herself. And as much as Cazan tried to avoid too much flirting she couldn't help the occasional slip out of habit. She was dodging another question about herself with a question about dragonrider candidates even as they sat down for some dinner. "So the candidates go look at some eggs, and then the baby dragons just pop out and pick one, and then... they just take care of the dragons until they can fly around on adventures?"

Katiryn knew she wasn’t always the brightest in the bunch but even she eventually caught on to Cazan deflecting her questions about him. He answered some, but they were usually work-related and rather vague in all other areas if he chose to answer. That was fine; she was still learning something of the man and she didn’t mind helping him out by teaching him about the Weyr and answering any of his questions. She liked talking and didn’t mind what the subject was.

“Something like that,” she laughed, setting down her plate before taking her seat. Cazan’s views on dragonriders and the Weyr were entertaining but Katiryn was happy to correct some of the misconceptions as well. “A lot of us have clued in to the Touching being a silly ritual that the old guys are superstitious about. I mean, if one hundred people touch the same egg, only one of them will end up Impressing it. If that. Sometimes someone who didn’t touch the egg ends up with that dragon.” She shrugged. It was all weird, really. How did a dragon find you once they were free of their shell? What made you their perfect choice when someone else wasn’t? Why weren’t you the choice of the dragon before? None of it really mattered because, dragon.

“But yeah, when the eggs start wobbling, we all gather to watch them hatch and hopefully find their life mate which eventually leads to the flying around on adventures. But there’s a lot of training and growing up together to do first.” She both wanted that so badly and dreaded it. It wasn’t that she was lazy—she just knew how hard her friends who had gone through weyrlinghood had worked every day and how tired and sore they could be and that didn’t sound fun.

“Fort Weyr has a Hatching coming up in… oh probably around six weeks or so. If you’re still around here then, you should come along and watch. I’ll be Standing for it if there’s a gold egg.” She hoped there was one! There hadn’t been many golds in recent years and Katiryn couldn’t recall when the last time she Stood at Fort was. Had she ever? It wasn’t important right then.

"Oh that sounds interesting! Ladies who end up with a gold dragon are basically nobility right? At least that's what I've heard." Cazan hadn't considered that she might be able to go watch a bunch of dragons being born, but it was a fascinating prospect. Six weeks wasn't too long, not much longer than the month she'd planned on after all. She could probably stay and keep up appearances for six weeks. "If the Weyrleader is fine with it and I find a room I think I can manage to stay at least long enough to watch the baby dragons hatch. But only if you're sure it's okay and won't be an imposition, I wouldn't want to upset mother or father dragon, or their riders."

But then she considered for a moment, head tilting curiously. "Fort Weyr is rather far away though, isn't it?" Immediately her eyes widened and her voice lowered as she leaned in to ask, "Would... would I ride a dragon on the way there? What is that even like?" She wasn't even sure if it was safe. What if the dragon tried to eat her? What if she fell off? What if something happened in that between place she had heard about? All the stories and rumors that had gone around were mostly about how it was filled with the souls of the dead. Not that she was about to say anything about that to Katiryn. At least not right then.

“I think so?” Katiryn didn’t know much about Holders and how Lords and Ladies worked. From what she could gather, a Lord was in charge but he delegated everything to other people and watched them work and a Lady looked pretty and did needlework all day and sometimes throwing a party. She supposed that was pretty similar to a goldrider since they didn’t really have any powers. “Goldriders don’t do too much though they get to lend a hand in some of the Weyr stuff. But since their dragons are the only ones that can carry eggs, they do sort of end up being revered and treated with more respect.”

She took a couple bites of food as Caz brought up transportation and gave a nod. “Of course. I’ve heard travelling to Fort in any other way would take forever.” She set down her fork and cast a dreamy gaze to the ceiling, as if watching a dragon flying overhead. “Dragons are graceful and there’s nothing quite like flying with one. I hope to have my own one day so I can experience it with the bond. You should see how some of them fly together when they don’t have passengers.” Katiryn’s gaze went back to Caz and she lit up with excitement as she explained the daredevil moves some liked to perform. The amount of trust between mates was incredible!

“But, even the fastest flyer would still have a long journey. Everyone just travels between when they go anywhere outside the region.”

Cazan took a few bites of her own as she listened to Katiryn go on about dragon flight and their acrobatic displays, and while it all seemed a bit unnecessary she did have to appreciate the enthusiasm that her new acquaintance (friend? Cazan wasn't sure yet) had for it. "You should do some flips and spins once you get your gold dragon. I'll even make you some special leathers so that you look good while not falling off. Though I guess this means I'll definitely have to try and stay long enough to watch the hatching if there's an egg with a gold dragon for you to hopefully meet."

But then there was that between business again. It probably wasn't full of dragon ghosts. If dragon ghosts were real. Which they probably weren't. She picked at her food a moment and did her best to hide any hint of nerves from her voice as she asked, "So... between... what's that like? I've heard some stories, but I don't really know what all is true or not. Can't trust a bunch of tanners when they've had too much to drink after all. You get all sorts of stories about dragons and their riders and what weyrs are like and so far the only thing that I know has been true is that dragons are big."

There were so many ‘ifs’ attached to Caz’s wonderful offer. There had to be a gold egg, the gold had to Impress to her, Caz had to stick around for a couple of years. But still, Katiryn couldn’t help but be excited by the prospect of doing tricks with her own dragon and having a handsome man make her special gear and she smiled, genuinely happy with her new friend and what the future might bring.

“Huh? Oh, between is just…” she waved her hand dismissively as she tried to think of the right way to explain it. She really didn’t know why some people feared it and now she wondered what holders thought it was thanks to Caz’s vague statements about drunken stories. “It’s really not bad. It’s over between one breath and the next, though it is chilly. That’s about it, really. Well, when a dragon is dying, they do seem to prefer to go between for their final rest but other than the quick jumps, no one living lingers there that I know of so there’s not much else to know about it.” It really was an odd place if she stopped to think about it. Where was it and how did the living that passed through it never stumble across… well, she didn’t want to think much further on that subject, especially while eating.

“Anyway! I’ll happily continue to dispel any crazy stories you may have heard any time you want to get together.” Katiryn dropped her not-so-subtle hint that she wanted to see more of Caz at the same time confirming how strongly she believed the leatherworker would be allowed to stay. “But first, eat up and then we’ll find the Weyrleader.”

The fact that dragons preferred to go between to die only cemented the idea in Cazan's head that it was a spooky, mysterious place. At least now she knew it was cold so she could plan to bring a jacket for the trip she'd agreed to go on. Six weeks wasn't too long, she was sure her brother would be fine. As lazy as Cazelarias could be he wasn't stupid; he'd find some way to avoid doing work while he waited for her to get back. Or maybe he'd actually take the opportunity to do his own work for once. She smiled, both at the ludicrous thought of her brother and at the potential of spending more time with a friendly face. "I'll have to find you for dinner again after I get some work done."

It was only an hour later that Cazan was finally alone in her own room, marveling at just how easy it had been for Katiryn to arrange it with the Weyrleader. Clearly her new friend was someone important or at least influential, she'd have to make some sort of gift for her. But first she was going to settle in, relax, unwind the bit of fabric under her shirt that she used to keep her chest flat and replace it with a much more comfortable sleeping shirt. She climbed into bed with her notebook, fully intending to write down a few ideas to pursue the next day, but falling asleep before she could even crack the book open.
