F'drel was due a visit.

The greenrider had been a big help in some areas recently, whether he wanted to be or not, and D'hys needed to repay him. It probably would have surprised some people that he believed in rewarding good behaviour instead of just taking what he wanted, when he wanted it. While that was fun and had its place, it just wasn't a good business practice. He believed in rewarding his employees so they continued to preform their duties at the highest caliber. Of course some of them had been initially blackmailed into helping him and he felt they all ended up with good deals to keep them motivated in the end, but sometimes a special circumstance arose and it deserved further compensation.

The whole mess with B'jin, R'nd, and F'drel would have been easily fixed within a day if B'jin had more than two wine-soaked brain cells left to rub together. He had, a bit more kindly, pointed out the next time B'jin heard gossip and wanted the truth, he would do better to come directly to D'hys than believe some bored greenriders looking to stir up trouble.

As it was, he ended up having some fun because of the mess, though it had gone on a lot longer than he would have both preferred or expected it to. B'jin was a stubborn git--and one that was addicted to being thrashed around. D'hys was into a lot of things and some of it included giving lovers some pain with their pleasure but flat out punching and causing intense bruising to bloom wasn't usually requested. He still pulled his punches at times and he was pretty sure he'd given B'jin a new kink that would scare the shit out of innocent R'nd and in the end, they both seemed to get off on that power play.

After the Flight Larrikith was close to having at the Gather of all places, D'hys finally had to get rid of B'jin. He needed his space back and the game was growing old. So the proper information was presented to the greenrider and he was set home to fix things with his beloved bluerider. His attention then went to acquiring the reward for F'drel, which wasn't as easy as he would have assumed. But at last he had all the paperwork from all the deals he had to work out. It was almost more work than he felt was warranted for what F'drel had done for him but the greenrider was surprisingly good at his job of information gathering and deserved the treat.

It also helped serve as a reminder to keep trusting him and show what he could do when motivated. If D'hys could provide something at this level, he could just as easily take it all away again.

He didn't give F'drel warning of his coming, not until Zeianth was tasked with inquiring about any visitors when they appeared over Ista Weyr. Visitors were easy enough to get rid of but D'hys had a feeling R'dal would be an issue if he was around. That kid was weird and D'hys didn't want to deal with him more than he had to.

He greeted Halomirth when they landed on her ledge, always doing such a thing with any dragon. Some days D'hys preferred dragons to humans but he just genuinely liked and respected the creatures. He turned his own sisters away to keep Zeianth well and truly safe from the plague, after all.

Leaving the dragons to their own devices, D'hys sought out the greenrider and grinned when he was found, "F'drel, you're looking well. Do you want to start with business or pleasure today?"

Halomirth perked up when Zeianth reached out to her, uncurling from her post-oiling doze. Just us here, she told him cheerfully. It wasn’t unusual for Zeianth to confirm with her that she and F’drel had no guests - both he and his rider seemed to prefer to be their only visitors at a given time, for whatever reason. Halomirth didn’t mind. She was just glad she and F’drel were available (they usually were, but still!) when they wanted to stop by. She reached out to F’drel to let him know Zeianth and D’hys would be there in a few minutes, and stood up so she was in a better position to greet them.

Once the bluepair arrived Halomirth chirped a greeting back to D’hys - he was always very kind to her, and she liked him, even if her rider didn’t seem to be as fond of the bluerider - before happily twining herself around Zeianth. She hadn’t seen him properly in a little while and she missed him.

F’drel, for his part, had not missed D’hys in the slightest, unless you counted the feeling of slight apprehension he felt at not having heard from him in a bit and not knowing what he was up to as ‘missing,’ which F’drel didn’t. He was never entirely sure what to expect from any interaction with the bluerider, though he always expected it would make him uncomfortable.

The information that D’hys would be arriving momentarily was met with a sigh from F’drel. Because why should he get through the morning without being disturbed. Not the he was doing anything important, or that couldn’t be interrupted, but still. Dusting and polishing furniture was undoubtedly better than anything D’hys could be there for.

There was even more furniture for F’drel to polish now, though he still felt a little weird about it. R’dal had insisted on getting him a chair at the Gather, even though F’drel had said he had no need of one (it had been a Gather of gifts, apparently, as A’tay had given him a wall hanging of a beach scene the day after, which F’drel felt was a more reasonable gift than a chair, though he also felt a little weird about the reasons for that gift). Eventually F’drel had accepted that R’dal was going to get him a chair, rationalizing that it was really more R’dal’s chair - the bluerider thought F’drel’s weyr needed a chair more suitable for two people and therefore cuddles, and F’drel knew the chair would see the most use when R’dal was over, so it really was for his friend’s benefit, not his own. F’drel would admit the chair was comfortable - it was practically a nest in chair form - but so far he hadn’t really used it without R’dal there. Still felt a little weird to sit in it by himself. Lack of use didn’t mean it wouldn’t gather dust, however, so when F’drel wiped down his other furniture, he made sure to get the solid parts of the new chair as well.

At least he’d already gotten to all the furniture in the main room when he got Miri’s announcement of impending visitors, and F’drel reluctantly put away the cleaning rags. He’d just shut them away in the cabinet when D’hys entered the room, and F’drel sighed again, this time internally. F’drel just barely resisted rolling his eyes at D’hys’ greeting, and fixed a pleasantly bored expression on his face instead.

“D’hys,” he said mildly, “I thought it was all business.” There was certainly nothing for F’drel to be pleased about when D’hys was around, other than perhaps reassuring himself he was still in the man’s good graces. Which wasn’t really something to be pleased about either, it was just better than knowing the bluerider was actively out to make his life worse.

"If that's how you want to view it," D'hys didn't care if F'drel saw any of their interactions in a pleasurable light or not. It really was all business in the end--and his own personal pleasure was an added bonus. He was confident enough in his skills to believe F'drel got some enjoyment out of their sexual encounters but let the kid think what he wanted if it kept him happier that way. D'hys was nothing if not observant.

Speaking of observant, "nice chair." D'hys admired the new item that seemed more like a nest than a chair before making himself at home in it. Damn. It was actually comfortable and D'hys decided he'd stay there a bit longer, settling in like he flopped in such odd pieces of furniture all the time. "Not something I'd see you picking out, though. Maybe a gift... from that delightfully odd bluerider of yours. R'dal, was it?" He knew perfectly well who the kid was and while he typically tried to stay away from him as he was a rather unknown entity in terms of regular behaviour, D'hys had actually enlisted his aid recently on the reason he was visiting F'drel.

"Anyway,," D'hys grinned as he switched the topic away from R'dal to leave F'drel wondering what he might know about the kid and if the kid was safe from his horrible clutches, "this might actually be considered a pleasure trip as I come bearing a gift. A thank you gift so no strings attached to it. I promise." It would be easy enough to turn the gift into a bartering tool to get F'drel to do something more outside of his comfort zone, but D'hys had a feeling that wouldn't work nearly as well on the greenrider. But F'drel was still smart enough to catch all the hidden implications behind the gesture so it would still work out.

F’drel did not like the way D’hys made himself at home in R’dal’s chair. It wasn’t for him, and he shouldn’t get to sit in it so casually, as if he had a right to. Especially if he wanted to pretend he didn’t even really know who R’dal was, which was stupid. There was no possible way D’hys didn’t know who R’dal was, he’d made it his business to know things and R’dal was the son of a Weyrleader. It’s not like R’dal was particularly cautious either, so it wouldn’t be hard for D’hys to find out plenty more on him if he felt like it. Pretending he barely remembered R’dal’s name was ridiculous. Stupid bluerider and his stupid power games. What performative bullshit. F’drel may prefer to keep his life as private as possible but it was impossible to miss how much time he and R’dal spent together. It didn’t sound like D’hys had any designs on R’dal, just wanted to be a dick to F’drel and attempt to unsettle him. Which worked, because of course it did, anything could unsettle F’drel, but still. Bastard.

It took so much effort to keep from giving D’hys the most unimpressed glare, but F’drel managed.

And apparently D’hys was offering a ‘gift’ of his own today. F’drel raised a questioning eyebrow, heavily doubting anything D’hys ever did truly had no strings attached. Sounded terribly unlikely, in F’drel’s opinion. He didn’t say anything, just watched D’hys suspiciously and waited for the bluerider to elaborate. F’drel had very low expectations for this ‘gift’ of his.

"Your silence is what I like about you," D'hys wasn't bothered by F'drel's lack of response. F'drel was an observer, silently noticing details and overhearing things not meant for him because he was so easy to overlook. When he did speak, he knew how much to say to someone and who to report to with even more. His skills really were worth all the effort he had to put into the gift.

"As a thank you for your part in that little drama with B'jin and R'nd, as well as providing me with some surprising information involving another couple, I pulled some strings, filed a lot of paperwork, and spent a lot of marks all so I could say, congratulations, F'drel. Your sisters are free from Hold servitude and will be moving to Ista Weyr in two days as free weyrfolk. The Headwoman thinks the kitchen or laundry will be best but she's willing to let them try their hand in any other area, especially if any of them are good with a thread and needle."

D'hys watched F'drel closely for his reaction. The man was good at schooling his features to keep from showing too much emotion but this was something he wouldn't have been expecting and a slip up, even minute, had to show. It was tempting to further add to the shock by explaining how negotiations went with Jalazmar and Xyliah that involved finding suitable replacements for the servants they were losing. It would have been even more enjoyable to see F'drel react to the knowledge that his sisters were in Ista, instead of Fort where D'hys had more sway, because M'ris had been blackmailed thanks to his past hidden relationship with K'tir.

But he'd keep all of that to himself unless F'drel asked in just the right way for details. What he would share on the matter, was one more important detail. "Oh, and one of them can Stand as a Candidate. I forget which one is the one Edath was particularly fond of." He knew perfectly well which one it was since Zeianth also liked her. They never told anyone that Zeianth seemed to have an affinity for Searching as neither really wanted to spend the day poking at kids. But it did help back up Edath's claim and D'hys even told R'nya about the success, saying the kid could be a good Searchrider. He had been in a good mood that day, so what?

He pulled out a couple sheets of paper from his pocket and held them out for F'drel. "It's all in writing. Jalazmar agreeing the girls are free to move to the Weyr and M'ris letting them into Ista."

There was a moment F’drel considered how someone saying they liked it when he didn’t say anything was probably a very clear warning sign to stay the fuck away from them - which he would, but at this point he didn’t think he had much of a choice in the matter - before D’hys kept talking and F’drel was sure the world stopped moving.

He what?

F’drel listened, frozen, as D’hys explained his gift. He didn’t know what to think. He didn’t know what to do. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to say thank you, both because he didn’t want D’hys to feel F’drel was indebted to him (anymore than he’d already be thinking that) and also because part of him wasn’t even sure he was thankful. At some point, yes, F’drel was planning on getting the rest of his family to a Weyr, but not so soon, he wasn’t ready, two days?
And D’hys had said sisters. Which meant Kitelan wasn’t included, and there was no way F’drel was going to be able to accept ten turn old Kit left with a lord and lady and no one to watch out for him. There was no way Kelikki would allow it, either, but how much choice would she have?

Then there was the fact one of them could be a Candidate - had to be? Would she, whichever of his sisters it was (how could he know which one a dragon might like?), be able to say she didn’t want to? Would she not want to? What if she Impressed green, she’d be at Ista… And Edath had Searched her? Had D’hys taken R’dal with him to make this happen? Wait, had D’hys met his siblings? Without him there? D’hys and R’dal had gone to see his siblings and he’d had no idea? F’drel could feel his heartbeat increasing, his chest closing up, his breaths coming faster, though his face remained frozen in neutrality. He was too conflicted on everything to have any expression other than blank, though if someone looked closely they’d be able to tell how shaky his breathing was and how minutely his hands were trembling.

F’drel took the papers offered to him, knowing that if he tried to speak the words would get caught in his throat, reading through them carefully, frowning in concentration as he tried to make sure he understood everything, all the details and fine print. It took him longer than he would like - he could read, mostly, he’d been working on it, but he wasn’t the fastest at it, and he was being extra careful to understand all of it, to be sure he was getting everything it said. There were a few words he wasn’t sure of, but he didn’t think any of them greatly changed the content or his understanding of what the documents said. Once he was satisfied - or as satisfied as his reading ability was going to allow him to be - he looked up at D’hys.

“To clarify,” F’drel started, “my brother is not included in this. He is to stay with Lord Jalazmar.” He paused until he got confirmation and then continued. “Are my sisters allowed to choose if they would like to move? If one or more of them would prefer to stay in the Hold, would they be allowed to, or has it been decided they must move here?” Knowing his siblings, the younger two girls would jump at the chance to move to a Weyr, probably all of the younger girls with Kelikki’s permission, but he couldn’t imagine Kikki would willingly leave while Kitelan was left behind. This could be a chance for them, yes, but F’drel wasn’t going to force any of his sisters to leave the lives they knew, understood the rules of, for Weyrlife if they decided that wasn’t what they wanted.

For once, D’hys broke character and made a disgusted click of his tongue at the mention of the brother and scowled at F’drel. “You know Xyliah. That woman is impossible. She refused every offer and dismissed all reason as she seems to have adopted little Kitelan.” At least her husband seemed to have a brain between his ears and realised the problem they might have if they pissed off the bluerider. But not even he could persuade the girl to give up her new brother or son or whatever the kid was to the Lady.

D’hys stretched and leaned further into the chair, arms going up to rest behind his head as he continued watching F’drel. “Your sisters have no choice in the matter as this was done for you, not them.” Honestly, did the greenrider have to be so considerate and think about others? Then again, that could be used against him and to D’hys’ advantage.

“Unless… you want to add strings to my gift. I can renegotiate to let Kelikki stay like was suggested at one point and you can owe me for that.” D’hys couldn’t imagine why F’drel would want any of his sisters to continue staying with a Lord, even one as benign as Jalazmar seemed to be. The only thing he could think of was the old belief that there was safety in numbers and F’drel was worried about the little brother. He could respect that, honestly. Once, D’hys cared deeply for his own sisters until he had a hard choice to make. This choice didn’t seem quite as difficult, but for F’drel, perhaps it would be.

If it had been any other situation F’drel would have gotten a vicious satisfaction at how clearly annoyed D’hys was at his plans being thwarted, even a little bit. As it was, F’drel couldn’t really disagree with not being happy with Xyliah for insisting on keeping Kitelan with her, though his reasons were much different than D’hys’. F’drel was worried about his brother, whereas D’hys was almost certainly put out just because things didn’t go exactly as he wanted them to. But if D’hys couldn’t get Kitelan away, F’drel had no chance of it, and his worry for his little brother only grew.

F’drel wasn’t sure he liked this new arrangement. A gift, for him? Hah. If it had been R’dal’s idea he’d at least be able to put it down to R’dal truly wanting to help bring his family closer to him, but no. But D’hys? Hardly. He didn’t know why the bluerider did it, but it was ultimately for D’hys, not F’drel, and certainly not his sisters - D’hys had said as much. What was with dragonriders and thinking no one could possibly prefer not to live in a Weyr, honestly. Especially the Weyrbred ones, like both R’dal and D’hys. Not that F’drel had liked Nabol, but when you were a drudge and had no control over your life, every choice was important, especially something as big as moving from Hold to Weyr. F’drel hadn’t really had a choice when he was Searched. Not that he would have preferred to stay, and he wouldn’t give up Miri for the world, but he’d had no say in it. The brownrider accompanying the Searchriders had asked Lord Jimeridan if the Weyrs could have him, and the Lord had said yes. F’drel hadn’t even been present for the conversation. D’hys saying his sisters had no choice because this was a gift for him, fuck that.

“I would like to ask her what she would prefer,” F’drel said once he’d pushed down his anger enough to speak calmly, “If she wants to stay where she is, I’m sure we can come to some arrangement.” He’d probably hate whatever he had to agree to, but it would be worth it to give Kelikki that choice. She was his only older sibling, and had been watching out for the others all alone since he’d been Searched, and he owed her, and Kit, who they’d be leaving alone, that much. “If she decides she would like to come to the Weyr, nothing has to change.” F’drel wasn’t sure she would, but he didn’t know. He couldn’t read her mind, and he couldn’t make that choice for her. He wouldn’t.

“I imagine that’s acceptable?” F’drel asked, wanting to get the potential for Kelikki to choose what she wanted confirmed before moving on to any further questions he had.

How utterly boring. F’drel thinking of others and what they wanted really didn’t surprise D’hys but he had hoped the greenrider would simply accept the new offer and the whole thing would be done for him. But no, now they had to go speak with Kelikki and take into account her feelings and desires. In the end, either option she chose worked for D’hys. Either his gift was fully accepted and everyone moved into their new places or he earned a favour out of F’drel that he would hold onto for a special moment.

“It is. You can even speak to her without me around if you like.” D’hys gave a stretch from his nest of a chair, almost reluctant to leave it, before finally getting to his feet. “Otherwise, we’ll both be going to bring the girls to Ista in two days. Walk with me,” D’hys ordered as he headed back out of the room and to where the dragons were curled up together. Zeianth’s soft spot for sweet greens charmed even his rider though D’hys didn’t show even a twitch of a lip trying to smile at the scene.

“If she comes to the Weyr, we’re square. This was a thank you for unwittingly breaking up R’nd and B’jin for a while. But if Kelikki does stay at the Hold, you owe me a large favour of my choosing when I choose to use it.” Currently, he had no need for F’drel to whore himself out at anyone in particular or to commit murder or steal something so the favour—if he got it—would sit on the shelf until a time it was needed. R’nya was asking him some interesting questions lately and depending on where it all went, F’drel might be useful for it as well.

“Do you have any interesting news to report while I’m here?” When F’drel answered in the negative, D’hys nodded. “Then I’ll see you in two days. Enjoy your day, F’drel.” Zeianth had already untangled from Halomirth and gave her a final nuzzle as D’hys mounted up. His gift was delivered and he had no further reason to stay that day, especially since he had business waiting for him in Telgar.

Thankfully D’hys seemed to agree to the potential change, though that seemed to be the end of the discussion for the moment, because the bluerider got up from the chair and ordered F’drel to follow him. F’drel did, walking quietly behind him, entire body tense. When they reached the ledge and stopped, and D’hys restated how F’drel would owe him an unknown favor if Kikki didn’t come to the Weyr, F’drel nodded in silent agreement. Surely he’d hate whatever he had to do, but what else could he do? What choice did he have in the matter?

He still had questions about the whole arrangement - why Ista, for example. Wouldn’t it have been easier for D’hys to get them into Fort, since both he and R’dal lived there and he probably had more influence there in general, as well as it would give him even further control over F’drel, if he was in a different Weyr than his sisters and couldn’t keep an eye on him. F’drel doubted it was because D’hys was being nice. He wasn’t convinced the bluerider was capable of truly being nice.

F’drel watched Miri and Zeianth saying goodbye to each other, and he supposed he was glad at least Miri had a nice visit. D’hys may be an absolute piece of work, but his dragon seemed pleasant enough. Of course, Halomirth liked everyone and F’drel probably shouldn’t take her word so much on how nice Zeianth was or wasn’t, but dragons did seem to be generally better than people as a rule. Lucky Miri. He didn’t bother saying goodbye to D’hys, only giving a partial nod in response. F’drel likely wasn’t going to enjoy his day now, and he didn’t really want D’hys to enjoy his own. Or at least, not enjoy it more than needed for him to leave F’drel alone. He did appreciate that the bluerider hadn’t wanted ‘oh wow, thank you for my amazing gift you’re wonderful’ sex, because F’drel was now far too worried about his siblings to be even slightly in the mood for that.

As it was, as soon as Zeianth was out of view F’drel went back inside to strip the cover off the nest-chair cushion so he could wash it. Once he got that cleaned and hung up to dry F’drel would be going to speak with his sisters, figure out what they wanted and whether or not he’d be having an unknown favor owed to D’hys hanging over his head for the foreseeable future. What a gift.
