"F'drel!" R'dal called out for his friend's attention as he made his way from the dance floor over to the table of drinks. He was in high spirits that day but who wouldn't be when a party was thrown in your favour? Well, all the dragonriders' favour, of course, but he was one of them and he helpe a lot with the fires, so he was allowed to have fun. He was also going to make sure all of his friends had fun as well. It kind of sucked that some of his friends were Candidates and left behind, but he had plenty of others to look after, which was why F'drel was suddenly noticed as he left R'dare's side where they dance and enjoyed the Harpers.

He quickly grabbed a cup of punch, not caring one way or the other for alcohol he went straight for something that would refresh him after dancing. Once it was downed, R'dal moved to F'drel's side and was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Do you wanna build a snowman?" He'd never done that before! Last winter at T'ryn's aunt's Hold, they played in the snow and he saw others do it but he didn't try it himself. Mostly because the ice skating was fascinating and he couldn't stop trying it. Now, he was ready to build!

"It doesn't have to be a snowman," he added when the slow response meant there was a chance F'drel was going to say no. Not that he really ever denied any ideas. He did, after all, get in a boat despite not knowing how to row or even swim. F'drel was a good friend and R'dal had decided after that day to make sure he didn't push their friendship too far again and to look after the greenrider so he didn't wind up in trouble because he couldn't say no to others. But playing in the snow was different and his friend absolutely had to join him. "It can be a snow dragon!" That was probably a bit more complicated than placing two or three large balls on top of each other but they worked well together and would figure it out.

He was so happy he convinced F'drel to come! Now he had to convince him to do more than stand around people watching; which was fun in its own right, but... snow! Dancing! He was so excited!

It was looking like F’drel would never be able to avoid large events again. Between R’dal, D’hys, and Mylorah he always had at least one people requesting — in their various fashions — that he attend these things. He had somehow avoided the Gather in Nabol by claiming to be ill, which was true enough to be convincing because the thought of going there now that his siblings had moved really did make him feel sick. At least he got to visit his sisters and brother during this event, but they were also helping work at the party, since it was hosted by the Lordling they worked for, and while they had breaks and time off, there was plenty of time they were busy. Which meant F’drel couldn’t just spend the entire time with them.

Instead, he just sort of lurked off toward the side, slowly sipping a non-alcoholic drink — he was only accepting drinks from one of his sisters that day since he could fairly safely assume they wouldn’t give him anything suspicious, and they had access to the unopened drinks as well. Much better than filling a cup from a punch bowl or something. If people spoke to him he would respond, but overall he just listened and watched. He’d been ‘asked’ to, after all.

Until, of course, R’dal bounced over with the energy of a five turn old who’s had too much dessert and asked if F’drel wanted to build a snowman with him, of all things. He blinked at R’dal for a moment, making sure he’d heard that right. Yup, snowman. Or snow dragon. Halomirth perked up at the idea of snow playing, from where she was rolling around in the stuff with a few other dragons. Snow dragon! she cheered in his head, encouraging her rider to make one with R’dal. Because of course she thought it was a great idea.

“We could probably manage a dragon if it’s unhatched,” F’del said, not really sure what to say in response. He had exactly no experience making snow anything, especially not dragons, but since he doubted he could turn R’dal down they could probably manage a vague egg shape and call it a dragon. Or be more ambitious and actually attempt a proper dragon, but F’drel wasn’t sure how that would even work. How the fuck would you make the wings? With snow? Find some sticks? Have the dragon lying weirdly with wings spread out flat on the ground?

R’dal’s enthusiasm paused at F’drel’s reply and it took a moment for his brain to process the clever way his friend’s mind worked. “So an egg. I mean, sure! And we could make a massive one because doing it life sized would be kinda boring.” He grinned mischievously as he had a feeling F’drel wouldn’t like the idea of pushing a ball of snow around forever. In fact, R’dal wasn’t even sure how big they could roll it. Snow seemed light but would it remain so all collected up like that? Would it become too heavy to pus after a certain point? Could the dragons continue pushing it? He was kind of excited to find out now and his teasing suddenly seemed more foolish than just making an egg.

“Let’s go start on a ball and we’ll decide if we want to make a giant egg or a snowman when it starts getting bigger!” R’dal didn’t want to talk about it forever, he actually wanted to go do it! While he was doing his best to respect F’drel’s space –except when it came to cuddles because they were always in synch when it came to that—and learn more about what the man liked and didn’t like—so the near-drowning incident wasn’t repeated— R’dal felt they were on the same page enough about snow to grab the greenrider’s hand and give it a tug before dragging F’drel outside and off to a prime parcel of snow.

When he stopped, he continued to hold F’drel’s hand—partly to make sure he didn’t run away, but mostly because he didn’t think to let go—and studied the untouched patch of snow. It was pretty like that; no footprints trudging through or bits of grass sticking up. R’dal almost felt bad to disturb it, but he knew someone else would if he didn’t and he really wanted to build something. Finally, F’drel was set free as R’dal dropped to his knees, recalling what he could from all studying others. He started patting snow together in his palm to form a ball, pleased when it actually stuck together and did what he wanted. So far so good! It was then placed on the ground and more snow was swept towards it and also patted onto the ball making it a bit bigger. Even better!

When bringing snow to the growing ball didn’t seem quite as efficient anymore, R’dal finally gave it a nudge to start rolling it and looked up at F’drel, surprise in his eyes. “It’s heavier than I thought it would be and it’s not even that big yet!” Snow was so cool and mysterious! “I’ll give it a few shoves and then you can have a turn! I bet we’ll have to work together when it gets too big.” Getting to his feet, R’dal bent over and started pushing the ball of snow until he felt he hogged the fun enough and stepped aside for F’drel to have a turn.

“Lifesize isn’t big enough?” F’drel asked, wondering how an egg that was about four feet long wasn’t sufficiently sized enough for R’dal. How big was massive? Watch them get crushed to death trying to roll a giant snow egg, with their record it would fucking happen to them. He was still trying to figure out if maybe making a snow egg was actually a worse idea than a dragon when R’dal grabbed his hand.

F’drel very nearly tore his hand away from the bluerider, instincts already on high alert in a place with so many people. Instead, he managed to only startle a little before forcing himself to relax enough to let himself be dragged along by R’dal. They were friends, and there were people around who most certainly thought the were an item of some sort, and it really wouldn’t do him any good to have anyone questioning that status due to him pulling his hand away. He even managed to kind of hold R’dal’s hand back instead of just holding his own hand stiffly.

He watched as R’dal started making their snowball to be the base of their snow egg. The basics of snowball making, at least, Fdrel knew. His childhood hadn’t been super conducive to snowman building, but he and his siblings had definitely made snowballs and thrown them at each other. It really was the only appropriate response for when your younger sister stuffed a handful of snow down the back of your shirt. They just didn’t usually try to leave evidence that they’d been playing in the snow, like snow people or snow animals. The previous Lord Nabol had a thing about his workers not working.

With a nod, F’drel stepped forward to start rolling the snowball. R’dal was right, it was a lot heavier than expected. It took a lot more effort than he thought he would need to move it even a foot. And R’dal wanted to make this thing how big? Fuck. He gave it a few decent rolls before he gave up and waved R’dal back over.

“It’s a two person job now.” Well, F’drel could probably roll it a few more times by himself, but he’d rather not. It would probably be more fun with a second person helping, anyway. Just on his own felt too much like work, not… whatever this was. Submitting to one of R’dal’s whims because he was mysteriously fond of the bluerider. Which would one day end with him getting crushed with a giant egg-shaped snowball or something equally ridiculous, F’drel just knew it.

R'dal had been studying F'drel as he pushed the snowball, taking note of any special technique or stance the greenrider had. He was foolishly assuming again that F'drel had experience in something and would be a good master to learn from. This time, though, he caught himself doing it--eventually, it was still a rather slow process in getting to the point--and when he jumped in to help push alongside his friend, R'dal thought to ask. “Have you played in the snow before? Or is this your first time making a snow-something?”

R’dal helped push the ball for several feet before it started to require his feet digging in a bit more and all his strength was going into his arms to help keep it going. It was really starting to suck! Everyone made it seem so easy and fun but this was turning into a lot of work. What if they did make a snowman and they had to lift a ball onto another one? He was pretty sure they’d die from that. Maybe if they found a plank of wood, they could roll the second ball on top of the first. Maybe that was the proper way of doing it. Would the Lord and Lady let him search around for a board? Probably not.

Frowning, R’dal slumped against the ball with a sound of exhaustion and a good sign he was giving up for the time being. “This… isn’t exactly what I thought it’d be like.” His lower lip jutted out in a frown as he studied F’drel to see if he felt the same way or thought it was easy. It was hard to tell but F’drel seemed like he may have been in the same category of tired so he came up with a compromise of sorts. “It was fun until it got too heavy sooo… what if we made a clutch of slightly smaller eggs? We could make it a race and see who makes the most before a hot chocolate break!”

“I have,” F’drel shrugged in response to R’dal’s question, “but I never really made anything I couldn’t hold in one hand.” Couldn’t throw bigger snow things at sisters easily. The snowball they had now had gotten a few feet tall by that point, and there was absolutely no way F’drel could lift it in just one hand, let alone throw it at someone. He’d never throw it at someone in fun anyway, a snowball this big would hurt someone. Just hopefully wouldn’t hurt anyone today.

R’dal’s sudden mood change had F’drel blinking at him in confusion. He'd been so enthusiastic a minute ago, what had happened? The explanation made sense though — F’drel wasn’t having a miserable time, but he wouldn’t exactly call trying to roll this mound of snow fun, and it wasn’t too surprising that R’dal felt the same. Though really, F’drel sometimes felt R’dal could enjoy anything, but that may have been overestimating the man’s positivity.

“Snow’s a lot heavier than it looks,” he said by way of agreement. A change of plans that did not involve shoving this snowball around any further was fine by him. Still though, F’drel thought it was a bit disappointing if they put all this effort into the snowball and just abandoned it. “Maybe we can turn this one here into a very round gold dragon and then make the snowball clutch around her?” He suggested, feeling bad about completely dropping the enormous snowball idea when R’dal had been so excited about it. Stupid bluerider making him feel bad that they couldn’t make a giant fucking egg out of snow, how had this even happened? Friendship, Miri said wisely as she rolled around in the powdery snow in a very undignified manner. F’drel sighed.

"Hmm..." R'dal took a few steps back from the ball-egg-potential-dragon and studied it. How would they turn it into a very fat dragon? He wasn't that great at drawing and now he was expected to think in a lot more dimensions that a flat piece of paper. Part of the problem was thinking of everything in the form of balls. He knew how to make those so that was how everything should be made. But the tail and neck wouldn't work like that. Maybe just packing snow in long lines would work. It was how he gathered snow to start his ball, so it seemed reasonable to just do that for the less than round portions of a dragon. The wings would be a problem but they could just use their imaginations and pretend she had them extended or tucked away. He solved his mystery for the tail and neck, but wings were getting to be a bit too elaborate for him.

"Let's do it! We can make her tail and head curve in so it's like they're protecting her clutch. You work on the head and don't forget the knobs! Do them like Halomirth's; hers are cute." With his usual bright smile back in place, R'dal gave F'drel a hug for being so smart and then bounced off to claim his side for the tail. He crouched down and started drawing snow in to build up the part that would connect to the round body. He was going to need a lot to make it look somewhat realistic! F'drel was going to have the same issue with the neck and R'dal didn't want to make him work more than he had to because he agreed to play with him. So he jumped up and moved a few feet away to start gathering up armfuls of snow for his tail, leaving the easier accessed snow for the neck.

As his tail started to grow and curve the way he wanted it to, R'dal plopped down, not worried about getting a cold bum since he was actually a bit overheated. He was supposed to be sculpting the end of the tail but was watching F'drel's progress more, enthralled with the way he worked and perhaps even holding his breath a bit in anticipation for the head knobs and what the final masterpiece would look like overall.

F’drel was about to ask how Halomirth’s head knobs looked any different from any other dragon’s head knobs in particular, but he paused when R’dal hugged him, figuring it would be better to just roll with it at that point. Crisis averted, R’dal had bounced back to his normal happy self with little issue, which meant F’drel didn’t have to feel guilty about upsetting him. Not that giant snowballs being a fucking pain to move was in any way his fault. Whatever. Better work on making a dragon neck and head.

Because of course R’dal picked the easier end. A head was a lot more complicated than a tail. Did he do that intentionally? Did it even occur to the bluerider? F’drel wondered about that as he started to build up the neck, curling it back in towards the main snowball-body. He pulled the snow in to build the hill that was the neck, then carved out the bottom edges so it rounded the neck out a bit more. For the neck ridges F’drel made a few small snowballs and shaved of the edges, before centering them on the ‘neck’ and smoothing them down to stick to the other snow. The head was a little tricker, but he ended up making one larger snowball for the back of the head, then two smaller snowballs for the nose, which he packed snow around to make it more like a single shape, not three snowballs. He poked little holes for the nostrils, and then moved on to the head knobs. Two smaller snowballs soon took form, the smallest yet, and F’drel made two little mounds on the back of the snow head and then placed the tiny snowballs on top, packing in a little more snow to get them to stay in place.

He was trying to figure out how to do the eyes — just have them be closed maybe? — when F’rel realized R’dal was no longer working on the tail and was in fact just sitting on the ground watching him.

“What is it?” he asked. Had R’dal decided making snow creatures wasn’t fun again?

Whoops! Apparently he had been staring too long and caught F'drel's attention. Not that he was embarrassed about it, though he was surprised he didn't get frowned at for not working as hard. "You're so good at this!" R'dal didn't think he was exaggerating as he said it, believing the work spoke for itself. Even back on the beach at Katila when they were kids, he wasn't that great at making things in the sand. Well, at least not anything that his friends could recognise. "You're creative and stuck with the dragon idea even when I had no idea how to make it work."

R'dal was still smiling when he went back to poking at the end of the tail. He was nearly done it anyway, so he just tidied it up, wanting to make it look as nice as F'drel made the head. He had the easier part, after all, so he couldn't just half-ass it and hope it was overlooked. As soon as he finished, he bounced to his feet, dusted his bum off, and admired their work. She was so cute! She was also very round, and a real gold probably would never see that shape, even if she was heavy with eggs.

They still had to make their clutch of eggs, but R'dal waited until F'drel was standing upright again so he could slide up to the greenrider and go in for a hug. "Thanks for playing in the snow with me, F'drel." The hug ended as quickly as it started, as R'dal crouched down to start working on some snow-eggs for the mama to protect. As he worked, he wondered if they should sign their names on the dragon so everyone would know who made the awesome piece.

F’drel gave a soft ‘hmph’ as he turned back to giving the dragon eyes — he decided they would be closed, so he just drew a slight ‘U’ shape on each side where an eye would be with his finger. ‘Creative.’ Sure, if you considered it creativity to try to figure out the best way to keep everyone around you happy. Not that part of it wasn’t that he actually wanted R’dal to be happy — playing in the snow was hardly a hardship on his end, even if his gloves were getting a little damp from the snow melting from the heat of his hands — but part of it was also that deep seated instinct to make sure he kept people happy.

He shifted over a bit to make their snow dragon some tiny front feet, which were pretty much just snowballs tucked in where feet should go, before standing up to think about how to go about making wings. Which was when he suddenly had the weight of a very earnest bluerider pulling him into a hug. Just as suddenly, before F’drel could piece together something to say in response, the hug ended. F’drel sighed softly as he watched R’dal immediately begin to make little snowball eggs. For the moment, he left the snow Clutch to the bluerider, turning his own attention to figuring out how to make wings. He figured he could make some vaguely folded-wing shapes out of snow along the top of the big snowball, and started gathering snow up for the wings.

When he was done, F’drel eyed them, knowing they looked really nothing like wings. At least it was something? A dragon without any wings would be weirder, so F’drel shrugged it off and sat down next to R’dal to join in making snowballs.

He had completely forgotten about wings and feet! If it had been up to him, they would have ended up with a snake that looked like it ate a boulder—or was smushed by one. This was another reason why F’drel was so good at creating things in the snow! R’dal loved the little feet that stuck out the front but he had no idea how to mimic that with the hind legs and figured they could get away with not having them. Or wings, it seemed, as the greenrider attempted to make something that resembled a wing. R’dal stopped making eggs and considered the problem, wondering if they could find sticks and ask the Lord and Lady if they had any sheets they could borrow and then drape them over the sticks to create a wing fanned out, sheltering the eggs.

His mouth opened to suggest it and then promptly shut again. One thing that sucked about not being in the same Weyr as his Weyrleader dad was that he got the lecture to behave twice. R’nya’s at least wasn’t directed at him, but an overall list of rules and a reminder of manners was always given before he allowed his residents to mingle with Holders and alcohol. M’ris was pretty relaxed most of the time but he gave the same sort of speech before Gathers and often did it as a dad when he spotted R’dal before or during the event. It kind of sucked but R’dal was old enough to know that a lot of people took appearances and behaviour seriously and he never wanted to disappoint his dad either.

So he stayed quiet, thinking F’drel’s attempt to make the idea of a wing have a starting point with the finish line being in the imagination of the beholder was perfect. He said as much when F’drel joined him on the ground, “told you that you were creative,” he gave his large boxy grin to his friend and resisted the urge to give him another hug—though that was mostly due to a few eggs between them and his hands full of snow starting the next one.

Once they had constructed a decent sized clutch for their chubby gold to guard, R’dal stayed sitting in the snow, admiring their work and deciding that playing in the snow was a lot of fun. “I liked growing up in Katila where we got to play in the forest and sometimes day trip to the lake, but I see how much we missed out on as well by not getting snow. Not that I even knew what it was, even when a Northerner would explain it. Those of us born in Katila had never seen a horse either until a few turns ago!” He turned wide, shocked eyes on F’drel as he remembered the first time he saw one with a group of friends. Someone thought they were small, he thought they were large, but they all agreed horses were weird. What was the point in having something to ride if it didn’t have wings or talk?

As his gaze swept out across the open field where some humans and dragons played, R’dal started to reach into a pocket to pull out his little pouch of emergency dried berries to snack on. Sitting there by their snow dragon while others played around them reminded him of the night he met F’drel, though the snow was sand and the playing wasn’t quite so innocent that night. But he stopped, leaving the berries alone as he got to his feet instead, extending a hand to help F’drel up. “Wanna get a hot chocolate with me?” He had to admit that his bum was getting a bit numb and sitting by a fire while sipping a hot beverage sounded nice right then.

He hadn’t kept count of how many snow eggs they made for their snow dragon’s clutch, but F’drel knew it was a lot. There would have been at least two hundred tiny snow Candidates standing for it, thought there was no chance F’drel was going to suggest they make anything more in the snow. They’d made plenty already, and F’drel’s fingers were freezing and his gloves were getting damp from all the snow so making anything else wasn’t exactly appealing. F’drel turned his head to look at R’dal when he started talking about Katila, figuring if he stared at the snow dragon any longer he’d feel obligated to fix something on her.

Somehow it hadn’t really occurred to F’drel that the people raised in Katila didn’t see snow, or even horses, until moving North. Both had been around F’drel his entire life growing up, snow and horses, and it was hard to imagine not understanding them. Nabol was in a mountain valley, so there was snow every winter. And even as a household drudge he’d seen horses, though he had never ridden one. In a Hold like Nabol, horses were for lords and other important people, and sometimes messengers rom outside the Hold proper. F’drel had not been any of those, so he’d only been near horses, not on them. Even so, there was still something about having never seen one that was hard to comprehend. He shook his head softly.

“Not having snow doesn’t mean you missed out. And if you really feel you did, you have plenty of time to experience snow,” F’drel shrugged. It may be weird to him to never have seen snow, but he wasn’t sure any of the Katilian ‘brats had been deprived. It was just something different. Katila was different from Nabol which was different from Ista. Personally, F’drel much preferred living in Ista, but that had absolutely nothing to do with the weather.

F’drel startled a little when R’dal stood up, watching him carefully, wondering what the bluerider was planning now. He breathed a sigh of relief at the plan to get hot chocolate and nodded, taking the hand offered to him. “Yeah, sounds good.” Maybe wrapping his hands around a warm drink would help him feel his fingers again. He let R’dal lead the way over to the drinks, walking half a step behind his friend and gratefully took the warm, chocolatey drink when it was offered to him. They ended up wandering over to one of the fires, and F’drel listened to R’dal talk about whatever crossed his mind while the both sipped their hot chocolates.
