Jalazmar sat patiently in the office of the Weyrleader, doing his best at being polite and not give in to being nosy. No doubt if Xyliah was there with him, they’d both laugh as they peeked at papers or got a little handsy with each other while they were alone. He was surprised at how much and how quickly fondness for her had grown. He still wouldn’t call it love, though he loved a lot of things about her, but he was happy she was his wife and even looked forward to the years ahead that had her at his side. The only reason she currently wasn’t at his side was because the Weyrleader was showing her around the Weyr while his office was in use for a meeting. He could only imagine what M’ris thought about his request but at least he had given in to it.

He had noticed the way F’drel was always excited to see his siblings that were gifted to him at his wedding but Jalazmar also saw more than that. The greenrider seemed afraid to take up the offer to relax and visit with his siblings any time he wanted –so long as their chores were done but they weren’t kept that busy. A talk was needed and now was the time. Neutral ground seemed like a good idea. If F’drel didn’t seem comfortable staying too long at the Hold, he probably wouldn’t like a Lord popping by his weyr either. Unfortunately, that also meant he had to be a bit sneaky in getting the meeting to happen in the first place so the poor greenrider had no idea why M’ris had summoned him to his office. Jalazmar wondered if it was like being told to see your father after the Harper ratted you out for not paying a lick of attention to the lesson that day.

It was why Jalazmar had put a lot of thought into the meeting, asking for a neutral room, some juice brought up after F’drel had already arrived – he didn’t want to make it seem like he was trying to get the greenrider drunk or that he had done anything to the drink – and even how they would be sitting in two identical chairs. Maybe he was over thinking things, but given that his siblings were drudges, it seemed safe to assume that F’drel had been one before being Searched as well. It also helped that Kelikki and Xyliah got along and she shared a few simple facts like how F’drel, Fendrel at the time, was a drudge in Nabol when he was fostered there. Was that why the man seemed so familiar? They would have both been rather young at the time so it seemed doubtful, though the name did ring a few bells.

He was lost in thought, trying once more to remember more details about his time in Nabol when he heard the knock and door open. Standing, Jalazmar readied to greet the greenrider.

The day hadn’t started out too badly, but it was going downhill fast, and it wasn’t even noon. R’dal had shown up the night before, asking if he could sleep in F’drel’s weyr. Apparently he was doing something with his sisters early in the morning and wanted to get in as much sleep as possible. Or something like that, F’drel hadn’t entirely followed the logic. Their friendship had somehow survived the boating incident, and it had been a bit weird for a few weeks, but they had settled back into a sort of routine of R’dal periodically stopping by to spend the night or take a nap. F’drel was almost used to it now, which was odd — he’d never expected to be comfortable sharing a bed with anyone other than his siblings, but here he was.

So waking up had been fine, but nothing afterwards had been. R’dal had left, and F’drel went to get breakfast. He’d gone to get klah, but someone in front of him had knocked it over, and he’d been unable to get any that morning. If that wasn’t bad enough, he’d cut his finger on a shard of the klah pot that had shattered when he tried to help clean it up. One of the kitchen workers had insisted he go see one of the Weyr Healers, despite it being a very minor cut, but she wouldn’t let him say no. So he’d had to deal with the Healers, which was never fun.

He finally gets back to his weyr, planning to make a small pot of klah of his own, but of course a firelizard had to arrive with a message. At least it hadn’t startled him enough he broke his own klah pot, but it was small consolation considering the contents of the message. M’ris wanted him to visit his office? Why? What did he do? What could the Weyrleader possibly want with him? F’drel couldn’t think of a single good reason for being summoned to the Weyrleader’s office — not a one.

Whatever it was, putting off going would likely only annoy M’ris, so F’drel reluctantly headed off for the office. He got more and more worried with every step he took, worst case scenarios running through his head. Still, he continued to the office and knocked, announcing himself and waiting for a confirmation from inside. When one came, F’drel let himself inside and stopped dead.

The man in the room was not the Weyrleader.

He was someone F'drel wanted to see even less than the Weyrleader.

“Good morning, my Lord,” he said stiffly, eyeing Jalazmar warily while keeping his expression as pleasantly neutral as possible, “is the Weyrleader in?”

Jalazmar grinned and was doing his best not to start laughing thanks to the idea that he could blame M'ris for failing to tell the man why he was summoned. That likely wouldn't put him in favour with Weyrleader or greenrider if they found out he said such a thing after asking for the reason to be skipped in the summons. All of the effort he was about to exert to get the man before him to relax would be for naught!

"I'm afraid the Weyrleader is showing my wife around the Weyr right now and this was a ploy to get you here so we can talk." The blunt truth seemed like the best approach although he still wondered if there really would be a best approach in such situations. F'drel had been a drudge and was now a greenrider, which he heard meant he was ranked lowest and was probably harassed by the other dragonriders.

When another knock at the door came, Jalazmar called for them to enter and decided as he watched the girl set the jug and cups down on the table that she must have been waiting in hiding for F'drel to arrive. He hadn't quite meant it literally for her to arrive after the greenrider had, but it worked all the same and he dismissed the girl before turning back to the drinks.

"I hope we can speak openly in this meeting, F'drel," Jalazmar continued as he poured the juice into each cup then passed one to F'drel. "To be frank, you often seem nervous while visiting my home despite having an open invitation to visit whenever you want. I know your siblings look forward to your arrival." Grabbing his own drink, Jalazmar returned to the chair he had occupied before and waved F'drel to sit in the other. Growing up in the family he had, Jalazmar knew to still be a bit worried about someone serving drinks and offering such pleasantries. A brother could be trying to poison him or some nefarious plot or blackmail was about to take place. Still, he hoped F'drel would trust him enough, there in the Weyrleader's office, to know he wouldn't be drugged or harmed.

"I want to know why and if there's something I can do to help change it."

F’drel was stunned. This lord convinced the Weyrleader to lie to him? Well, not exactly lie, more like omit essential information, which was just as bad. At least Jalazmar had admitted to it being a ploy. Not that it made F’drel feel much better, but he did appreciate people not playing games with him and just saying things outright. Even if those things were ‘hi, I manipulated you into meeting me.’

He jumped at the knock on the door, half expecting it to be the Weyrleader despite Jalazmar just saying what he was doing. Instead, it was one of the Lower Caverns workers, a girl F’drel had met a few times. Her hands were full with a jug and some cups, and he couldn’t help eyeing the jug warily. F’drel hadn’t always been so paranoid about drinks, but he’d learned the habit in his teens and Casa’s camping trip had only made the tendency worse in recent months.

Jerking his head to look back at Jalazmar when the lord started speaking again F’drel had to work extremely hard not to show any expression. Speak openly? With a lord? Sure, he’d consider it when Miri turned gold. He internally berated himself when Jalazmar revealed he’d noticed F’drel was nervous when in his house. Stupid. Had to get better at hiding things, clearly he was out of practice. Gingerly he sat down in the other chair, keeping his posture stiff and upright. He took the remaining cup, confirming it was juice, and brought it to his lips but didn’t take a sip. Just in case. It would let him see how Jalazmar reacted to thinking he’d had some of the drink. The fact he was in the Weyrleader’s office and, in theory, that provided him, as a dragonrider, some protection didn’t even occur to him. F’drel’s sense of the world had focused in to just the person in front of him. Jalazmar was a lord, and lords did what they wanted when they could get away with it. That was just how it was.

He almost laughed at Jalazmar’s last statement, after which he seemed to want a response. Something he could do to help F’drel be less nervous around him? It took all of F’drel’s willpower to keep himself from blurting out ‘not this.’ Instead, he quickly formulated something that wasn’t technically a lie but not exactly the truth — an omission, which seemed fair considering how he’d gotten here in the first place.

“You were fostered at Nabol for a time as I recall, my Lord,” he started slowly, analyzing and reanalyzing every word before he said it, “while the Hold was still run by Lord Janderian.” F’drel was pretty sure Jalazmar had returned to High Reaches the same turn Janderian died, but he couldn’t recall if it had happened before his death or as a result of the regime change. His own mother had just died, and most of the turn was a blur, between her death and Jimeridan becoming Lord Nabol, so he couldn’t remember exactly when Jalazmar had left. However, he’d definitely been there under Janderian, which meant his story would work.

“You may recall he was very particular about how things were done in his household. He didn’t like us relaxing when there were better things to be doing. And there was always better things to be doing, of course, so if we took a few minutes to rest and spend time together you had to be on alert at all times or you would get yelled at.” F’drel shrugged, trying to keep the motion casual, and not scripted, “Growing up like that, it’s just habit now. I know you’ve given permission, but it’s hard to shake ingrained reactions like that. It’s just a time thing, I think, and I’ll get over it with time.” That last bit was a blatant lie, of course. F’drel was assuredly never going to drop his guard in a lord’s home. Not ever.

Hopefully, Jalazmar would accept his explanation. It really was true, other than him getting over it with time, it just wasn’t the main reason F’drel was so jumpy in the lord’s house. But he was in no way willing to explain that he expected any lord to eventually try to force F’drel to sleep with him. Especially since that reaction was Rinderian’s fault, and he was only a turn older than Jalazmar — F’drel was pretty sure they’d been friends while Jalazmar was fostered, though he had no idea if they’d kept in touch. Telling the lord his childhood friend had taken advantage of him for turns likely wouldn’t go over well. No, he would not be explaining that to Jalazmar.

Jalazmar relaxed back into his chair when F'drel joined him and even took a sip of the drink. It didn't occur to him that the man could be faking it, even with his own wedding months earlier having poisoned drinks. If it wasn't for Gabrin's little shake of his head to tell him not to drink it, who knows what would have happened? But he wasn't being deceptive, outside of getting F'drel to join him, so he didn't imagine fake sipping would take place with him. He was harmless! All right, not entirely true; he was still a lord and wielded some level of power but he hardly used it.

He nodded at the correct assumption of when he was at Nabol and continued nodded as the explanation came to light. It did make sense, he had his own memories that aligned with F'drel's. "He was that way even with us. Lords shouldn't be goofing off when there was plenty of history, geography, and family lines to learn. Truth be told, I had quite a few lectures from him," Jalazmar grimaced but was soon chuckling before taking a swig of juice.

"Surely your siblings have mentioned Xyliah and I are nothing like the Nabol Lords, though?" They weren't like any lords that he knew of thanks to their lack of knowing what the hell they should be doing. He really should have paid more attention to some lessons but he never imagined the Fort Lord Holder to gift him an operational hold and land for his wedding gift. "They're given free time daily, usually in the morning as we're late risers, and my wife does her best to give them all a day off together."

That reminded him, he actually had that written down somewhere. He set his glass down and checked a couple of pockets before finding the small folded piece of paper and set it on the small table between them. "Xyliah wrote out their schedule for the month for you. She wanted you to feel welcome as well and thought it'd help if you knew exactly when they would be available for visits."

The fact that Janderian was strict with even his family wasn’t news to F’drel; he’d overheard a few lectures himself. Janderian liked to keep things in the family, but drudges apparently didn’t count as other people so they often heard things meant to be family business. And really, F’drel didn’t have much sympathy for Jalazmar or his cousins. They never got hit at least, and if a meal was taken away it was less of a big deal since they had larger, better meals in the first place. Whatever, F’drel would put it aside for now.

“I am aware, my lord, and I truly appreciate it, and I know they do too,” he admitted. Earlier that summer on one of his visits Ferra had jumped in his arms shrieking they were getting paid, that they were servants now instead of drudges. And that was so important for them, it meant that after a while they could leave if they wanted and have something to live on, as opposed to nothing. He quietly took the folded piece of paper and opened it. The schedule for free time really was quite generous and F’drel wouldn’t believe it was real if he didn’t have his siblings’ word backing it up.

He was hesitant to think there was no price coming in the future for all this generosity, but he didn’t live with these people, and Kelikki seemed to believe them well enough. With a nod to Jalazmar, F’drel folded the schedule back up and put it in a shirt pocket. “Thank you, my lord,” he said, as stiff as his tone ever was with lords, but he picked up his cup and took a sip. He deemed it unlikely the man was poisoning or drugging him at this time. Setting the cup down again, he reassured Jalazmar that there was nothing the man could do. Him doing something to make F’drel ‘more comfortable’ would likely mean wanting to interact with F’drel more often, which he’d rather not if at all possible.

“Really, my lord, it is something I will get used to with time. I don’t think there is anything further you can do, though I do appreciate the schedule.” F’drel took another sip to make sure he didn’t say anything further, like ‘there’s no way you’ll ever convince me you’re not a threat to me and my family.’ Jalazmar probably wouldn’t take that well. Lords hated learning they weren’t capable of everything and anything.

Jalazmar smiled as F’drel took the schedule, happy that Xyliah had mentioned they should make him a copy. He fully believed the continuous comments about needing time to adjust to such generosity and trust wasn’t freely won in a ten minute conversation—or months of extending essentially free reign with visits, it seemed. While he knew nothing of F’drel’s life in Nabol and what may have transpired behind closed doors, Jalazmar was well-versed in the way of the Lords he knew, including his brothers. Even he had a slightly shady past with losing his virginity to a woman on the cleaning staff after she had widowed and he returned from Nabol. They reunited again a couple of years later for more romps in bed but she had been willing; not everyone that tangled with a Lord was. It was why, outside the deception that brought them together in that room, Jalazmar tried his hardest to be open and transparent.

He knew they weren’t equals and no matter how hard he tried to show he was a genuine man and rather laidback, they would likely never be friends either. But he still had to try to get F’drel to ease out of some old habits that, Jalazmar feared, had been beaten into him at a young age. “You really must stop with the constant ‘my lord’ thing, F’drel. I’m not your lord, we don’t even live in the same region. Even if we did, I have no authority over dragonriders.” He already knew that this idea was going to rub the wrong way for the greenrider and Jalazmar could already see easy arguments, such as how even he called the Lord Holders ‘my lord’ since they ranked well above him. Before his brothers got a bit too murderous, he used to tease them with the phrase as well with a slight mocking tone, of course, but he’d still done it.

“When you’re in my home, you’re an invited guest. I’d much prefer you just call me Jalazmar or toss in a title when others are around if it makes you more comfortable.” He really didn’t think F’drel would manage to do it even in their current conversation, let alone when he next showed up at the hold, but Jalazmar tried. He returned to sipping at his juice, contemplating if there was anything else he wanted to mention while they were together but felt like he had covered all the issues.

“Is there anything you wanted to ask or address while we’re together? As I said, it’s an open conversation and I want to know what’s on your mind about your family and where they are now.” He could easily ask the staff if they were happy but they would say they were even if he had them sleeping with the pigs without blankets. It was good to get a somewhat outside opinion on things and Jalazmar wasn’t foolish, he knew F’drel was the oldest and would want to protect his siblings, especially the girls, as much as he could, and might want to get them to the Weyr at some point. Honestly, Jalazmar would be fine with it. He liked them all and they worked hard but he didn’t want to force anyone to stay where they weren’t happy, even servants. His father put a noose around his neck to marry or be cut out of the family and while the marriage actually worked out well, that wasn’t always how things ended.

“Perhaps I will drop the title with time, my lord,” F’drel said, probably the closest to joking he would get with a lord around. He’d been keeping himself from saying snarky shit the entire meeting, but sometimes things got through the filter. And really, if Jalazmar meant it he’d probably take it well. Probably.

The idea of prolonging this conversation any longer was highly distasteful, and F’drel was shaking his head ‘no’ even before Jalazmar had finished asking if he had anything else to say. “No, my lord. From what they have told me and how they seem while visiting, they seem content. Your terms of services are more agreeable than the ones at Nabol, though those did improve with time as well, as Lord Jimeridan has never been as strict as his father. They think your wife is nice, from what I’ve heard.” He shrugged, really just wanting to be done with this. “That’s all, Lord Jalazmar.”

It never occurred to him, even with Jalazmar subtly suggesting it, to ask about any of them moving to the Weyr. Despite the fact they were getting wages now, he, and they, still had the mindset that they couldn’t really leave. Besides, since they were getting paid it was worthwhile to save up before leaving. If any of them had told him they wanted to move to they Weyr, F’drel would do his best to make it happen, but none of them had as of yet. They weren’t in Nabol anymore, so they were much safer. For now, though, it didn’t even cross F’drel’s mind.

Jalazmar chuckled at what he perceived to be a joke and decided he’d likely get along with the greenrider quite well; if the man could ever get passed his training as a drudge. He’d like to have F’drel over for dinners and spend the evening talking, maybe playing cards. If he had a significant other or good friend, they could come as well and Xyliah could join in on drinks and games. But it was best not to plan that evening out just yet, not even in his head, given he had a feeling it would be a while before they got past the ‘my lord’ portion of their relationship.

He nodded at the explanation that everyone seemed content with where they were. Of course, F’drel could be lying to him but Jalazmar didn’t think so. He was the oldest out of the siblings and it seemed fair to assume F’drel wouldn’t be able to hide his anger at any mistreatment he had heard about and would be asking for them to move to the Weyr where he could better protect them. This was good. He wanted to be a fair ruler where everyone in his hold was comfortable and not afraid of every sound. The small amount of progress made in the meeting was encouraging and Jalazmar looked forward to the coming months where he hoped F’drel was more at ease.

Setting his cup down, Jalazmar stood, having caught the clear indication that F’drel was ready to leave if he could. That worked for him. He got the conversation he wanted and had a lunch meeting to get to. If he could find his way. Perhaps one more favour was needed from F’drel. “I thank you for your time and honesty, F’drel. I’ll let you get back to your day’s activities, but first, I was told it’s nearby but I’d likely still get lost. Could you escort me to the dining cavern? The tour M’ris is giving Xyliah is ending there so we can have a midday meal together before leaving.”

F’drel’s relief when Jalazmar dismissed him had his breathing immediately ease, and he was absolutely fine with escorting Jalazmar to the dining cavern if it meant this nerve-wracking meeting was over. Maybe they’d have replaced the klah pot by now and he could finally get some. It only took until nearly noon.

“Of course, my lord,” he said with a nod, quickly standing up and replacing his cup on the small tray with the juice pitcher. Out of habit, he put Jalazmar’s empty cup on the tray too, and decided he might as well take it too the kitchens if he was going to the dining cavern anyway. It didn’t hurt to avoid leaving dirty dishes in the Weyrleader’s office. He gave Jalazmar a look that let the lord know he would be taking this tray and there was no point in saying anything about it. The tray was small enough he could carry it with one hand, especially if he rested the edge of the tray against his body, and F’drel opened the door with the other hand, holding it open for Jalazmar to exit.

Once the lord had left the room, F’drel closed the door and started making his way down the hallway, always very aware of where the other man was walking. It wasn’t long until they reached the dining cavern — it really wasn’t very far from the Weyrleader’s office. F’drel figured that was likely by design. Stepping in the room, F’drel nodded at Jalazmar.

“Here we are. Have a good afternoon, my lord, and I hope you and your wife have a pleasant ride home,” he said formally, before quickly stepping away towards the door to the kitchens so he could deposit the juice tray. He was pleased to notice there was indeed a new klah pot out, so at least he would get something out of this detour.
