R’dal had to stop himself, for the third time, from humming a tune he felt a harper would play in such a stealthy moment if he had one following him around constantly, performing a soundtrack for his life. But it was just so quiet—which was perfect for sneaking around being devious creatures—that he kind of wanted noise around to make everything less… creepy. Yeah, creepy. All the Weyrs had a lot of empty halls and weyrs but Ista even more so at the moment thanks to the heatwave sending a lot of its residents to the other Weyrs for refuge for a while. It just felt like they were exploring a long forgotten cave and who knew what was lurking around the next corner!

That probably explained some of the reason why he occasionally made exaggerated movements that had him ducking behind a wall or tip toeing across intersecting halls. Most of the time he behaved like a normal person, or at least what R’dal assumed people viewed as normal—and it was how F’drel seemed to be walking when he wasn’t getting literally dragged into shadowy corners when a noise was heard. One of those times had resulted in nothing and the other had actually had a resident walking by them. Naturally it was the time when someone was actually there that made R’dal want to laugh and he threw both hands over his mouth to keep from making too much noise.

The journey so far had been mostly quiet but fun. The greenrider was turning out to be good at sneaking around and R’dal was impressed that he didn’t seem appalled at the idea of it or pilfering some snacks. He was pretty sure F’drel was holdbred but R’dal had met others that were fun and had high hopes for this one as well; hopes that were being met with every step closer to the target. The target that was only a couple of lengths away.

R’dal paused, glanced around to ensure no one was close, and turned to his partner in crime. “Okay, we’re nearly there. We’ll creep in, grab some berries, maybe any pastries that might jump out at us, and then head back out. Easy peasy,” R’dal whispered the plan and grinned with confidence at how easy it really should be. It was late enough that the kitchen staff had long ago retired after cleaning up from dinner and far too early for the morning prep to begin. Really, the only trouble they’d come across would be another hungry soul looking for a nibble. But pretending there were higher risks made the adventure more thrilling and the reward that much sweeter.

“If we get caught, it’s up to you to sweet talk our captor.” R’dal studied his companion for the first time since leaving the beach. They were standing in the faint light of glow stones so it wasn’t really an easy task to do but it was enough to verify that F’drel was handsome and would be a good distraction. “Flirt with them, bat your pretty eyes… lemme see you smile. You can smile, right? I don’t think I’ve seen you do that yet since meeting you.” Honestly, it had only been an hour or so since they met but it seemed unheard of for someone not to smile in that time if they weren’t sick or have some sort of condition that stopped their mouth from working that way. He frowned and studied F’drel a bit more.

It had been barely more than an hour since F’drel had met this bluerider and he was already proving to be one of the most utterly ridiculous people he’d ever met. He had absolutely no idea how to properly sneak around — the trick was to act as if you belonged there, not jump at the slightest noise — and F’drel had to resist the urge to smack his head against the nearest wall every time he had to watch the bluerider dart from shadow to shadow or press against a wall. Ridiculous. The worst was when he physically dragged F’drel to hide at noises. Dragging an unwilling greenrider into the shadows was way more obvious than simply walking, but whatever. No one ever saw them anyway.

All the theatrics and absolute lack of skill at sneaking confirmed for F’drel that the other man was weyrbred. Maybe upperclass holder, but he didn’t seem it and his general openness and demeanor didn’t support that. He’d definitely never had to be truly subtle in his life though. F’drel had. Drudges were meant to be silent unless directly spoken to when around the lords and such — didn’t want some lady or lordling complaining about you stomping around while cleaning, perish the thought! — so you learned fast how to walk around and complete tasks nearly silently. His footsteps were softer than his friends, and F’drel wasn’t even trying, it was just ingrained at this point. You also learned to look like you belonged; easy enough when you were a drudge, no one really questioned that you were there to clean something or other, but some people never could quite stop looking nervous. They usually got sent away or reprimanded the most.

Even knowing they were unlikely to get in trouble — no one would care about two dragonriders getting a bit more food late at night in a Weyr — F’drel still tensed every time the bluerider did something a bit too exaggerated or made a little too much noise. Did he actually think he was succeeding at being stealthy or was he just entertaining himself with the dramatics having no intent to actually be stealthy. F’drel decided to pretend it was the latter to make himself feel better. He managed to contain his eye rolling as his companion stopped to go through the ‘plan’ right near the door to the kitchens. ‘Easy peasy’ indeed, especially if the bluerider would act like a normal person about getting a late night snack.

Snagging leftovers from the kitchen was hardly new to F’drel. The current Lord of Nabol had actually been fairly openhanded with his drudges and servants, but his father had been less so, especially in lean years, and it wasn’t uncommon for F’drel to ghost into the kitchens and steal a bit extra for his younger siblings. You just had to know what wouldn’t be missed, what wouldn’t get the kitchen workers in trouble. Lords ate so much, there was always a little bit here and there no one would notice the disappearance of. A handful of berries and a day old pastry or two, like Edath’s rider wanted? Well within the category of ‘unlikely to be missed.’

The rest of the ‘plan’ had F’drel raising an eyebrow in disbelief. Like fuck he would. What was this, ‘make the other person get in trouble not me?’ Or maybe some garbage about a flirty greenrider being a good distraction —and honestly with most riders it would be a good distraction, but F’drel had no desire to be a distraction if it relied on pretending to be interested and available. Fuck that. F’drel stared flatly at him .

“I don’t smile on command for blueriders,” he snapped, keeping his voice quiet despite his irritation. F’drel only truly smiled for Miri and his siblings, with the occasional pretend smile for someone when he deemed it safest to come across as friendly with them. If Edath’s rider had anything going for him — other than being kind to Halomirth — it was that he didn’t strike F’drel as dangerous. Overly enthusiastic, overly familiar, and a bit childish, sure, but he didn’t trigger F’drel’s ‘flight’ instincts nearly as much as most blueriders. In addition to almost certainly being younger than F’drel, he seemed to be genuinely open about what he was thinking and feeling. Either that, or he was a really good actor, but F’drel didn’t think so. Still, he wasn’t gonna be a distraction for a few berries and a roll or two, no fucking way. It had been a long day and F’drel had no patience left for being told to smile and look pretty.

R'dal stared, eyes wide with a bit of shock, as F'drel told him he didn't smile on command for blueriders. Was he being one of those bossy blueriders that greenriders seemed to hate? He didn't mean to be one! He was just having fun with a friend working out a plan. Maybe part of the problem stemmed from the fact that his closest group of friends since childhood had all Impressed to blue or bronze with no one going to a green. Well, except for Nerreh, but she didn't count. She was in her own class of awesomeness. Maybe he didn't know how to behave around greenriders? Maybe because the man was holdbred and they were thinking differently? Was he a Lord's son? That might explain it! He did seem to have a regal air about him and he didn't seem to like sex in the open or being told what to do. That explained a lot. He'd have to work a bit harder on behaving and reigning in his eagerness for, well, everything.

R'dal finally found a new expression and pouted at his companion. "Boooo... but fine. I'll play distraction even though you're more handsome. Not that I was asking you to sleep with anyone, you know. Just smile and apologise for being hungry and snagging some nibblies." Honestly, R'dal wondered if he was the better person to be the fall man in such situations, especially in Ista. His dad was the Weyrleader so would people let him get away with more, worried they'd get in trouble with M'ris for harassing his son? Or, would they all agree he should be made an example of and receive a stern punishment because of it? He'd worry about that later since they weren't going to get caught tonight!

With a wave for F'drel to resume following him, R'dal spun back toward their destination. At the door, he poked his head through slowly, glancing one way and then the other. As predicted, the coast was clear and R'dal slipped inside. As he passed a work bench, he peeked under various towels draped over bowls, usually finding dough left to rise over night and it only increased his desire for a sticky bun or some sort of pastry. When he made it to the pantry, R'dal was appalled to see how empty it currently was. He knew from a recent trip to the kitchen in Fort that it should have been stocked with a wide assortment of grains, root vegetables, and even some cheese wedges. Of course he knew the heat had devastated a lot of the Istan crops but R'dal didn't realise it was affecting the Weyr so much as well. Was that another reason why M'ris had so easily let anyone who wanted to transfer for a short time go without any fuss? The neatly set aside pastries left over from dinner to be saved for later confirmed it. Normally they'd be left out for anyone to take but this seemed to be bordering on rationing food.

Even with the guilt eating at him, R'dal carefully selected two smaller pastries from the trays and set them in a small towel, wrapping them up for transport. Enough of the residents were currently camping and wouldn't be back for breakfast and he wouldn't come by for food in the morning either, so it balanced out the two that he took. Maybe they shouldn't take berries? Maybe he'd see what there was first.

"How's the selection?" R'dal whispered as he came up beside F'drel. He assumed the greenrider had found the berries anyway since they were the actual goal and nothing else seemed to catch the man's fancy at the time of planning. "I got another snack just in case."

As soon as he saw the shock at his response on the bluerider’s face F’drel mentally berated himself. Stupid. Losing his composure like that could get him in trouble. At least Edath’s rider seemed to recover from the surprise and only pouted and said he’d be the distraction instead — which would almost certainly go terribly based on his behavior so far, so F’drel really hoped no one showed up.

“If you worded it that way it would have been fine,” he grumbled, following the bluerider into the kitchens. Smiling and politely and bashfully apologizing for being hungry late at night would have been his course of action had anyone questioned them in the first place. It was true, or close enough, and like with sneaking around it worked better when you acted at ease. But it hadn’t been worded like that. ‘Sweet talk’ and ‘flirt’ and the like got him on edge on his better days, and F’drel didn’t like being called ‘pretty,’ ever. People only called him that when they wanted something from him, and it usually wasn’t this type of distraction. Ugh.

Still internally grumbling F’drel headed over to look for berries, as the bluerider seemed to be getting distracted and poking his nose into random bowls. Clearly he wasn’t truly worried about being caught. F’drel just went straight to the goal, not bothering with exploring.

He found a basket of the same berries they’d eaten dried earlier. It wasn’t exactly overflowing, and a good number of the berries were on their way out, clearly withering. F’drel picked through the basket, taking only the ones that should be eaten within a day before they went bad. Since the majority of the berries were on the not-so-nice end of the spectrum, there were actually plenty to choose from. He’d brought the bag that had held the dried berries, and he filled it with the new ones from the kitchen. Every few seconds he glanced over to where the bluerider was, making sure he wouldn’t be surprised by sudden noises or movements — neither of which seemed unlikely — so F’drel quietly moved aside to make space when the bluerider came over to him.

“It’s not horrible,” F’drel said, holding out the half full pouch, “I’ve only taken the ones that are starting to go bad though, so I’m not sure they’ll all be good, but they won’t be missed. We can pick extra tomorrow and replenish the ones here. Make up for the ones we’re taking with better ones.” It would make him feel better at least. And if they found a good number of berries, donating some to the kitchens would be no bother at all. “If you think this is enough, we can head out now.” he said, really hoping they were done and could just leave.

R'dal nodded at the bag of berries and the explanation for the small amount. He was glad F'drel was as clever and and considerate as he was! He especially liked the idea of picking extra to bring back to the kitchen and had to stop himself from bouncing in excitement--he was trying to play it cool now, after all-- when he had a great idea. "Have you been down to Katila yet? That's where we should go berry-picking. I was born there so I know the area pretty well and can show you some of my favourite spots as well... if you want, that is." R'dal bit his lower lip as he tried to tone down his enthusiasm even more and let F'drel make up his mind on his own without feeling obligated to keep him happy. "We can just go for the berries, of course. That might take all morning and we want to get back to start drying them. But you can think on it while we walk."

R'dal let F'drel take the lead this time. They were heading to the greenrider's weyr and he was the better person for the task after all. He focused on keeping quiet and not playing any games in his head like he had been doing on the way to the kitchen, though his mind did wander a bit. What did his new friend think of him? Was he annoying? A bossy bluerider? Did F'drel plan ways to ditch him?

It wasn't until they were back in the weyr and seated near their dragons that R'dal stopped worrying he was going to be ditched at any moment. Normally he didn't care how others viewed him but he never wanted to be a pest and he would have felt horrible if he had been having fun but not his companion. Carefully unwrapping his prize from their mini raid, R'dal selected the smaller one and placed the other --still on the towel so it stayed clean!-- pastry in front of F'drel with a small smile. "They go well with fruit," he offered in explanation and took a bite from the one he still held, swallowed, and continued, "and sorry if I was bossy or mean. I was excited from the adventure with a new friend. I won't demand smiles from you again, but I do hope I get to see a genuine one from you one day." His cheerful mood returned with a brighter smile and R'dal grabbed a couple of berries to pop into his mouth.

F’drel wasn’t expecting the suggestion that they pick berries in Katila. At least the bluerider gave him time to think on it because he didn’t know how to respond right away. The walk back to his weyr was spent mulling it over, and he barely registered his companion’s restraint on this walk through the Weyr.

He had not, as a matter of fact, been to Katila yet. Ista and Fort had already been reopened by the time he was Searched, so he’d never really had the opportunity. Seeing the place would be interesting, surely, but F’drel didn’t have a burning desire to visit. It was likely a good place to look for berries though. If the Weyr pantries were anything to go by, the area around Ista likely didn’t have many and they’d probably have to try the mainland anyway. So going to Katila made sense from that perspective. Of course, F’drel was hesitant to go somewhere he knew little about — a different continent even — alone with someone he barely knew. The whole idea had his neck prickling uncomfortably.

But he wouldn’t be totally alone with the bluerider, not really. He had Halomirth, and as often as F’drel bemoaned her tendency to encourage him to make friends, if he really wanted out she would take him. So really, Katila was as safe in that regard as any other place on Pern, so they might as well go somewhere there was more likely to be decent berries.

By the time F’drel had decided this, having gone through all possible arguments multiple times, they’d arrived at his weyr. They headed out to the ledge with the dragons and, upon Miri’s insistence, ended up leaning against her side again. He accepted the offered pastry with a nod, not concerned about the integrity of the food this time — he doubted Casa had drugged the entire Weyr pantry, though considering the fun she seemed to be having that evening F’drel might want to start worrying about that for the future. F’drel had just picked up the treat when Edath’s rider apologized, and he could only blink in surprise. He didn’t expect an apology, and he couldn’t be sure it was sincere, but it was nice of the bluerider to say. Time would tell if he meant it. Having processed the apology, F’drel nodded in acceptance of it, deciding not to make a further fuss about it — him snapping earlier was already too much — and offered something of an apology of his own.

“Katila is probably a good place to pick berries. We can see how we feel about a tour once we’re there.” he said, before taking a bit of the pastry and settling in for the inevitable outburst of excitement at his agreeing to the bluerider’s idea.

R'dal didn't take offense to the lack of replies, especially to his apology. He had some friends that weren't overly chatty and figured F'drel would fall into the same category. At least he got a nod so that meant he heard the words and probably even accepted them. He continued to smile at his good fortune, though the next berry he swiped was bitter which caused him to pull a face and then chuckle at how quickly his fortune turned. Not that it stopped him from trying one more and then sticking with the pastry.

"Awesome!" R'dal, as expected, was excited at F'drel agreeing to go to Katila for their excursion. "I haven't been back for a while myself so this will be fun. There's still people living there, too. Just in case you're worried it's abandoned with ghosts or something. The old Weyrleader D'ren runs things and a lot of old riders retired there." He'd only been back twice since the move North. Both times had been surreal. Everything seemed the same but also deeply changed. He wondered if that was because it lacked as much life as it used to. The memories of the landslide and the other tragic events never really hit him when he was there either, but R'dal knew that was why so many other people never returned. That, and a lot of people had been Stolen and didn't want to return, even if they ended up with a dragon from it.

"Anyway! We should leave when the sun rises to get the most out of our time and I need sleep or I'll be cranky all day." R'dal jumped to his feet, brushing the few crumbs from his lap as he did so. The pastry had been a good bed time snack and he didn't need more berries so he left them for his friend just as he had done with the dried ones of earlier.

"Kick Edath out any time you want. He'll find me. I happen to know which beds are currently vacant while everyone's camping," R'dal gave a little devious laugh as he plotted which one of his friend's was about to donate their bed to him and gave F'drel a wave as he headed for the door. "I'll see you in the morning!"
