When you were a drudge big changes were scary. You had such little control over anything, it felt like standing in a heavy wind and hoping you wouldn’t get blown away. So when Kelikki was told she and her siblings were being transferred to a new household (bless the servant head for keeping the family together, if she ever got the chance Kelikki wanted to repay him for it), she was decidedly worried. She knew little about the people she was now to serve. The lady she knew nothing about, not even a name yet. The lord she knew a little, as he’d been fostered at Nabol for a time. He’d left when she was fourteen, but Kelikki remembered Jalazmar as decent enough for a lord. But he was barely a turn older than she, and had plenty of time to change his tune towards servants, as lordlings were wont to do. So Kelikki was worried.

Today she had been sent ahead to Fort Hold as a messenger, to inform Lord Jalazmar of Lord Jimeridan’s gift to him and his new wife, and was then instructed to remain with the lady from that moment onward. By some miracle, and thanks to Lord Jimeridan’s regard for family, she had managed to request her dragonriding brother Fendrel (F’drel now, she really should remember) as her transport. They’d all had a bit of an emotional reunion that morning, before Kelikki couldn’t justify stalling anymore and had to insist she and F’drel leave.

Riding dragonback was a new experience. Fen’s Halomirth apparently wasn’t even particularly big for a dragon, but she was much bigger than any creature Kelikki had ever seen from that close before. Flying, however, was exhilarating, even going between. When they landed, after what felt like both moments and hours, her heart seemed to stay flying in the air even as she slid down from the dragon, legs barely managing to hold her up.

Thankfully, a dragon appearing in the courtyard was attention grabbing and it took little effort for Kelikki to pass on her mission to meet with Lord Jalazmar and his soon-to-be wife. She was led to a side room to wait, F’drel remaining with her as an escort of sorts, until Jalazmar or his lady could be found to come receive the message she carried. Though there were chairs in the room, Kelikki remained standing, too nervous to sit and not wanting to appear as if she felt herself above those she waited on. Fen stayed standing as well, though where she remained still in the center of the room he paced the edges, a visual expression of the nervous energy she felt herself. Brushing out her skirts, making sure she was as presentable as possibly, Kelikki waited.

Jalazmar had spent breakfast with his betrothed, finding he might actually enjoy her company. It was early days still but she was fun to chat with and he found it even more delightful to rile her up a bit with some gentle teasing. He had even found out the day before that he got along fairly well with her beloved cat, Sunshine. So far so good! However, Xyliah was whisked away by some attendents after she was finished eating so she could deal with more wedding preparations. Well, he assumed that was it anyway. It was probably a dress fitting or maybe she did have a lot of say for what the wedding would entail. Jalazmar had been of the opinion it would be a small and simple fair just to get it over and done with and satisfy his father.

He had returned to his rooms while he considered what he could fill his day with. He really did want to roam around the area a bit to find the best tavern for drinks, best place for food, and what the local merchants sold. He had heard Fort and Telgar could be similar in size and mundane things, but they each had their own trends when it came to fashion and indulgences.

He had just made up his mind on his course of action for the day when a knock interrupted him. Jalazmar did his best to hide the bit of confusion he felt at learning his cousin, Lord Jimeridan of Nabol, had sent him a message, but not in paper form. He had sent a woman to bring him a message. He certainly hoped it wasn't the girl he was supposed to marry a few years ago! That might be a tad awkward to explain to Xyliah.

As he entered the room he was shown to, Jalazmar was rather relieved to find he didn't recognize the woman standing there, or even the man pacing around like a caged animal. He wondered if he would recognize someone from ten or so years ago, though. Well, best get his lordly duties out of the way so he could go back to fun and exploring.

"Good day to you both," he greeted cordially before focusing his attention on the woman. "I am Lord Jalazmar. I'm told you have a message for me?"

As soon as someone entered the room Kelikki tensed, and noticed as F’drel did the same, stopping his pacing and coming to stand by her, looking every bit the escort. She was glad for Lord Jalazmar’s introduction — despite having served him a few times during his fostering, Kelikki could barely recognize the man.

“Good day to you as well, my Lord.” She said, curtseying politely. “I do, my Lord. I have been sent with a message from Lord Jimeridan regarding your upcoming wedding. Part of this message is a letter.” Kelikki said, gesturing to F’drel who had dug the missive from the inside pocket of his riding jacket as she spoke. He took a few steps forward and held it out for the lord to take at his discretion. As far as she knew, the letter was simply further personal correspondence that Lord Jimeridan hadn’t felt she needed to learn or were easier to put in writing, as well as confirmation of her words.

“The other part of the message, which I believe is also discussed in the letter, is that Lord Jimeridan’s wedding gift to you, my Lord, and your betrothed is myself and several other drudges from Nabol Hold to assist you in setting up your new household. The others will be sent when you are ready to move into your new home, while I have been instructed to remain with your Lady, if you are agreeable to this, as an additional maid and to help facilitate the move. My Lord Jimeridan remembers your time at Nabol fondly and hopes to make this important life step as smooth and stress free for you as possible, Lord Jalazmar. If you have any questions or further requests of him, Lord Jimeridan asks that you contact him immediately.” She recited, trying to keep her breathing even and not run out of breath with the sheer amount of words she had to say. Kelikki didn’t think she had rushed too much, and her voice was usually clear and audible. “F’drel here,” she continued, again gesturing towards her brother, “Has agreed to bring any response you may have for Lord Jimeridan to Nabol once it is written, if my Lord desires to send a reply today.” Finished with her spiel, Kelikki took a deep, steadying breath. “Thank you, my Lord.”

Jalazmar waited a moment before taking the letter from the dragonrider, hesitating further when he actually took a second to look at the man. He looked vaguely familiar but he couldn’t place the where or why of it and assumed the man had gone to one of the gathers at Telgar Hold and they crossed paths. The letter was flipped back and forth to examine both sides and acknowledged that it was his cousin’s seal. Technically they were second cousins but it was just easier to refer to the man as a cousin; or if he was being his usual teasing self, Jalazmar played on the vast age difference between them and called Jimeridan his uncle.

He waited patiently through the long explanation and he almost felt sorry for the girl for having to recite it for his sake. He supposed it was to show her intelligence and ability to follow orders, which was appreciated, especially if he was now responsible for her. Jalazmar’s first instinct was to send her back with a ‘thanks but it’s all good’ note since he didn’t want to be responsible for more people than he needed to be, but in truth, he had no idea what he was going to do after the wedding. He kind of assumed his father would give him a parcel of land back in High Reaches but it seemed more likely that he was to be shipped off permanently to Fort Hold and expected to set up a household, especially given what he was just told. A nod was given to the girl that he understood and then busied himself with the letter, finding much the same with some added family correspondence and an insistence to assist in getting him started.

Momentarily forgetting the guests, Jalazmar turned back to the door, peeking his head out to catch a servant walking by. “You there, find Lady Xyliah and bring her back here. Inform her that her lord husband-to-be needs her urgently for a most pressing matter.” It really wasn’t urgent or pressing and he knew he could, and should, just make the decision to keep the gift of drudges but it seemed only fair in this matter to have her opinion as well.

Turning back to the messengers, Jalazmar smiled and waved to the tray of cups and a water pitcher. “Please, enjoy some refreshments while we wait for my betrothed to arrive so that I may share the news with her. I’ll also write a reply soon after that, F’drel, was it? I don’t want to keep you from your duties for too long.”

F’drel hated this whole business. For one, he had to deal with Lords again, which he’d managed to avoid since he’d been Searched. Being a greenrider had some perks. Still, going back to his childhood ‘home’ that morning had brought back too many memories he didn’t really want to deal with. Plus, being around Lords just made F’drel twitchy, always having to be ready to jump at the slightest notice. Ugh.

Another thing causing his less-than-stellar mood was his role in handing off his siblings to a mostly unknown Lord. Not that F’drel begrudged Kelikki requesting he escort her as opposed to some random dragonrider she’d never met, but he didn’t have to like it. Seeing his siblings was worth it, but he worried for them. What were their new Lord and Lady going to be like (Knowing the Lord as a child meant just about nothing in F’drel’s opinion. Lords got worse as they aged.)? Would it be worse than if they’d stayed at Nabol? There was no way to know and F’drel didn’t like it. He’d grown used to having at least some control over his own life, and here he was having powerlessness thrown back in his face.

He did his best to be polite and neutral, but he could tell he wasn’t as good at it as he used to be. Where he once would have stood at attention, waiting, much as Kelikki did, today he couldn’t stand still. F’drel managed to still somewhat when the lord came in, flanking his sister to make it clear she wasn’t to be messed with, and even managed to produce the letter without making a single snarky comment.

The lord - Jalazmar’s - pause to study him was disconcerting, as F’drel didn’t know what the man was looking for. Did he have some issue with him? Recognize him from his five years at Nabol? They had met in the past, on several occasions. Jalazmar had been only about a turn off in age from Rinderian, and F’drel had always been Rinderian’s favorite, so he’d been around a bit during Jalazmar’s fostering. Or did he notice how much he resembled Kelikki? She hadn’t mentioned that they were siblings. F’drel wondered about that. Having a dragonrider as a brother, even a greenrider, might give her some protection. Did she think she was protecting his reputation? He hardly had one worth protecting.

When the refreshments were offered, F’drel nodded politely but remained where he was. Kelikki poured a few glasses before taking one herself. F’drel figured her throat was dry after having to give that long winded speech. Hearing his name, F’drel returned his attention to the lord from Kelikki and shook his head.

“It’s no trouble, my Lord.” He said, internally gagging on the title. “It gives me time to help my sister settle in.” F’drel gestured to Kelikki with these words, deciding that he wanted this new Lord of hers to know she was related to a dragonrider. If he could protect her at all, even if from Ista, he wanted to.

Xyliah looked up, pausing in her conversation with Yanzi, as a knock sounded on the main door to her rooms. A delicate frown formed between her eyebrows even as Yanzi made a teasing comment about her husband-to-be Jalazmar stopping by to woo her in the early morning light. Xyliah scowled at her good naturedly as she shooed Yanzi to answer the door, rolling her eyes playfully and breathing out a deep and steadying breath. She certainly hoped it wasn’t Jalazmar! She wasn’t at all prepared – mentally or emotionally! – to deal with the man right that moment; she was much too focused on girlish gossip with Yanzi. Their wedding was just days away, and every time Xyliah thought she had her wild emotions under control, something broke loose! She had spent most of the previous night crying non-stop, and she had no idea why! It was all such a mess!

The wicked smirk on Yanzi’s face when the woman returned told Xyliah that whoever had been at the door was in some way connected to Jalazmar. That was confirmed when her maid relayed the message, and Xyliah frowned in confusion, tilting her head. Her innocent question of what Jalazmar could possibly want her for so early, had Yanzi giggling as she went into great detail of what men wanted so early. So late. All the time. Xyliah was positively mortified as she fled the room and made her way to where the messenger had told Yanzi to have her go. Since she hadn’t been dismissed, Yanzi followed curiously, greatly enjoying Xyliah’s flustered rushing.

Xyliah felt she’d made it to the room where she’d been instructed in good time, but who knew how long the messenger had taken to get to her? Pushing the door open, Xyliah peered in curiously and quickly spotted Jalazmar. Flashing a polite smile – her face was still tinged quite heavily with her blush – Xyliah swept into the room and was about to curtsy to Jalazmar when she spotted the two guests. Her eyebrows arched up slightly, and she took them in with interest as Yanzi snuck in behind her and quietly closed the door.

Turning her gaze from the two people she didn’t know, Xyliah lifted an eyebrow at Jalazmar, wondering what was so urgent but not willing to question him in front of people she didn’t know, or make a fool of herself if something terrible had happened. Maybe someone in his family had had an emergency? Births? Deaths? … What if his father had called off the wedding? Decided she wasn’t good enough for him after all and found someone of a higher rank to marry him like he deserved… Xyliah’s face lost most of its colour, and she glanced back towards the visitors, noticing at last that the man was a dragonrider. It was the steadying hand of Yanzi on her shoulder that had Xyliah remembering who she was, if nothing else, and she took strength from her maid.

“You sent for me, my lord?” she asked, turning her attention back to Jalazmar and keeping her chin up and her voice steady as she waited to find out what was going on.

His sister? Jalazmar took his time in passing his gaze from one sibling to the other, looking for similarities as well as wondering when F’drel was Searched and if that was why he thought the man was familiar. He may have served at Nabol Hold during his time there. Well, good on him for not only being thought worthy of Impressing a dragon, but actually doing so. He was still of the opinion that doing so was an honour, even if it was only to a green. Jalazmar then wondered how often F’drel was able to see his sister and if they had a standing appointment to visit on certain days and if he should continue with it. He likely would, not wanting to keep family apart and the girl – Kelikki as the letter said her name was – wasn’t going to be shackled and kept out of sight. “I’ll be sure to take my time with the letter then, F’drel, so you may see her safely settled.”

Jalazmar smiled as Xyliah entered the room but it turned into a frown when he saw what seemed to be panic fill her eyes and the colour drain from her face. Worried that maybe she was a bit under the weather and would perhaps faint from rushing over so quickly because of his poor choice of words, Jalazmar quickly took one of the glasses of water Kelikki had poured and returned to his betrothed with it. He set it in one hand and settled his hand under her other elbow to keep her steady if needed.

“I hope I didn’t pull you away from anything important,” or even a morning of leisure, if she wasn’t feeling well. “But my cousin Jimeridan, the Lord Holder of Nabol, has sent us quite the wedding gift. He has gifted us several drudges from his household to serve in ours, including this girl here. She is to be part of your personal retinue if you so wish it.”
