Chaos.

Dragons were screaming all of the Weyr in a manner Talian had only seen once. He shuddered a bit as he thought back on that night, the night Larrikith set the whole Weyr to keening over his impending death. This was similar, but not quite the same. The dragons weren't keening yet. They were screaming in terror. Jada would live.

She had to live.

Tal still didn't give a damn about dragons, but losing patients made him sick. 'Jada the goldrider' was all that mattered to the sick bastards that populated this Weyr, but 'Jada the sweet young lady who protected her wounded classmates' was worth fighting for. The short flight gave Tal time to think and focus while he continually shook and prodded the girl gently, trying to keep her conscious. He gripped her tightly, afraid he might lose her over the side...and his own stomach bucked and roiled in protest simply at the height.

They arrived shortly. Tal thanked the dragonrider that had carried them to the healer hall as they landed and dismounted, again with the rider's help. The rider agreed to carry Jada while Talian ran ahead to make preparations. What did he need?! Immediately, he needed something for her fever.

He burst into the hall and shouted for help. "Emergency! I need a cold bath and first aid for infection!" he called out loudly, not caring who he woke up. His normally weak voice was uncharacteristically powerful as he shifted into his work-minded state, thinking nothing of his own fears and insecurities and only about Jada. He pulled his headband into place and stormed into the first available infirmary room, motioning hastily for the rider to place Jada on the table.

Talian quickly opened the glowbaskets lining the room and pulled a pair of sheepskin gloves on. This was about to turn into a real mess.

Like I said above, more healers and curious onlookers would be amazing. Someone is also welcome to be the helpful dragonrider if they like

Would you please shut them all up! Larrikith's voice was irate as she touched on the minds of the two gold dragons, her eyes whirling a pissed off rainbow of hot colours as she landed lightly outside the Healing Hall, her rider slipping from her back in an oddly disjointed scramble as he shoved his way past lingering idiots. Some of us were sleeping. She added snidely. And Talian can fix anything. So please. Shut. Them. Up. Preferably before my brain explodes.

Ignoring his dragon and her whining, B'jin pelted up the hall, heading for the direction he could hear Talian's barked orders issuing from. The kid really fell into his own in an emergency, and B'jin felt the warm glow of pride swirl through his stomach. It was quickly turned into a queasy feeling, however, as he entered the room. The smell was nasty, and his nose crinkled up as he slipped around the outskirts, quickly doing as he was told when a healer tossed a pair of gloves at him and then instructed him to help with the cool water. He didn't bother putting the gloves on, though he tucked them carefully away, and dipped a clean cloth into the water, squeezing it so the excess water fell away.

"Hey, Jada," the greenrider purred softly, brushing a cool cloth over the girl's forehead. "Where's that pretty smile of yours? Hrmm," his voice was soft and filled with warmth, the same he layered upon his brats when they were feverish, and his eyes were bright. "Don't you worry love, my boy's going to fix you up, right as rain." He smiled and stepped aside lightly as another healer approached to assist Talian, standing behind the girl's head so he was out of the way, but could still babble at her in the same, soft tones.

"Your little one will be just fine, don't you worry about her," he added softly, refolding the cloth and brushing it over her face gently. "Such a selfless girl she chose," he cooed, smiling gently, "so caring, so sweet." So stupid, Larrikith put in snidely, not bothering to censor her voice so everyone in the room could hear her. Seriously. Who searched these kids? Larrikith asked indignantly, causing B'jin to crack up laughing. "You did!" he chortled.

Breccan had no idea what was going on. It was late, but she had been swimming, burning off her frustration in physical activity. She had been doing this so often lately she was moderately concerned about doing herself some damage, but so far she simply felt healthy, active. It hardly helped much when she wasn't swimming, but she did like the newly-defined muscles in her arms and shoulders. She supposed that was her silver lining, but her present attitude invited silver linings to go for a swim in wherry-crap. Yeah.

The dragons were screaming, and she wasted no time in returning to shore and pulling clothes onto her wet body, making a face unconsciously at the feeling. Tugging her long hair out of the back of the shirt, she jogged towards the Healing Hall, trying to ignore how uncomfortable she'd be as she dried in her clothing, sand and salt and all, and trying to ignore how similar this feeling was to the Hatching day, when she'd similarly been out-swimming her confusion. With a sardonic twist to her thoughts, she hoped that wasn't an omen. If whatever was happening went as badly as the Hatching had, someone was going to die.

The Healing Hall was a flurry of activity, and she burst in just in time to hear Talian roaring orders. Surprise brought her to a complete halt for a moment, staring at a stranger that wore the same face as the diffident Healer she knew. She felt a quick tingle of something uncertain that might have been attraction, startled by his transformation but not really shocked. Many Healers could do that, slip into a focus that blocked out all else, including, for Talian it seemed, personal insecurities. Her eyes snapped to the table, where a limp body was being put down, but she didn't recognize the girl until a moment later, when Talian opened a glow. It was Jada.

A roil of emotions struck her, and she was a little ashamed to find one of them was bright joy. Hadn't this been what she hoped for, the new Queenling pair dying young so that she could Impress Gold and take the rank she needed? Perhaps she would get her wish, but right now, with dragons screaming their terror outside, she doubted she'd be happy about it. Setting her personal feelings about the girl aside as best as she could, she stepped forward, claiming her own pair of gloves. Slipping the thin skin over her own was like stepping into another world. Suddenly it didn't matter who was on the table. Breccan was a mess somewhere, trying to sort through what to do and how to feel, but this wasn't Breccan. This was simply someone with a job in front of them, and the job was the most important.

She stepped unobtrusively to Talian's elbow. "Where do you want me?" she asked quietly, grey eyes flicking up to his. Oddly, she was comfortable deferring to him. Perhaps it was his greater expertise, or simply because she had a healthy level of personal respect for him, but regardless, she found it more natural to work for him than she'd ever felt working beneath the Masters at Healer. Her eyes left him to scan the unconscious form, not a person but a task to complete. Breccan might be worthless in the realm of emotion, but she knew well the cold motivation to finish. Here her competitive streak was nothing but an asset, a drive to do everything to the utmost of her personal ability, and then some. Things were simpler in an emergency, cool and distant, untainted by the confusing muddle of feelings.

Really, she should have gone in for trauma work herself. Who knew she'd find such peace?

Valerian had been in his room in the Weyrling Barracks, enjoying another evening alone. It was nice but also odd to have his own room once more after spending several months sharing with Allendris. So of course the best way to fix that was to go crash Allendris’ quiet time so they could continue their sitting in silence together. He had yet to make that trip that night and hadn’t thought to do it at all since he didn’t want the bronzerider predicting his visitations. Valerian also couldn’t deny the attraction to the idea of his friend expecting and hoping for his arrival. So the evening had been spent entertaining his poetic side with ridiculously flowery writing as Veeth encouraged it and asked for it to be read aloud.

Until another voice filled their minds. Veeth started wailing and his concern and fear hit Valerian fast and hard enough to send the Harper to the ground to console his little blue with arms wrapping around him. Moments later and they were out the door, Valerian realizing that something serious had to have happened to Jada for Krypth to send out such a distressing call which soon had dragons throughout the weyr picking up her cry. It was like the night Talian was dying and that was something he did not want to think about happening with Jada. He almost lost one friend, he simply refused to let it happen to another.

Outside of the Barracks, Veeth stopped when they saw Talian and Jada headed off to the Healing Hall and the gold dragons standing  nearby and beelined for Krypth. Valerian wanted to hoof it over to the Hall but waited, knowing the little dragons needed to comfort each other as much as humans did. Don’t worry, Krypth! Talian is with Jada and he’ll make everything right. Valerian’s going to be with her as well. He gave the frantic little queen a quick nuzzle before trotting back after Valerian, their trek to the Healing Hall now underway.

When they finally reached the building and fled down the hall toward the orders being barked, Valerian noted they weren’t the first to arrive and he suspected they wouldn’t be the last. Jada, along with Krypth, was the future of Katila and everyone would need to know what was happening. It was just too bad for them that they didn’t have any other claim on her and Valerian pushed his way past a few onlookers to enter the room. He was her friend and practically family given their history so he deserved a spot in the room, close to her in case she needed someone she liked and trusted.

He finally deigned the rest of the occupants worthy of note and realised B’jin was there as well and even helping. Valerian moved closer to the bed with Veeth right beside him. The little dragonet seemed more shaken up than the Harper was allowing himself to be and was practically glued to his leg with how close he sat, needing the comfort their contact brought him. “Jada!” He finally spoke, announcing his presence to the woman, perhaps even those working on her as well, “do you really have to make everything so complicated? There were far easier ways to get my attention tonight.” He was teasing her only because he had a feeling that she had to be scared with healers swarming her and her dragonet wailing. A familiar voice that wasn’t as frantic as the others floating around the room had a chance of calming her mind. Or so he decided right then and there.

Moments of peace had grown rare for Allendris after he had Impressed Vyaniorth and found himself thrust suddenly and unexpectedly into weyrlinghood. The young journeyman had hardly a chance to imagine what life with an infant dragon would be like before he'd ended up walking off the hatching sands with one in tow, but he was fairly certain that the reality of caring for his proud and demanding little bronze was far busier than anything he could have dreamed up, anyhow. After all, even new fathers to human babies didn't have the little creatures constantly in their heads, nor did they have entire Weyrs full of people reminding them of just how important to their livelihoods that gleaming hide could someday prove to be.

This brand new life at Katila was stressful in a way Allendris had never experienced at the Glass-smith Hall. Not that he didn't think he could handle it, of course, but it was no mystery why the young man chose to spend those fleeting moments of silence while Vyaniorth slept and he was left free of various other weryling responsibilities hermited away in his own barrack, drinking in the blissful feeling of relaxing quiet and solitude. Some days he would write in a journal of sorts, and others he would spend reading the few scraps of material available for such purposes at the Weyr, and other days he would simply sit back on his bed and reflect as he watched his dragonet's little bronze chest rise and fall in the steady rhythm of slumber. Today was one such of the latter days, as Valerian had yet to invade his privacy (not that he much minded the company of the usually equally silent and even-tempered man) and reprimand him for being boring. In the absence of the mental stimulation provided by asking his classmate for a piece of paper or leaning over his shoulder to read his poetry, Allendris found his mind wandering to Jada. The poor girl had been saddled with even a far greater deal of attention and responsibility than he, after bonding with Krypth. He wondered how she was handling the pressure. He wished to talk with her more than he did, but Krypth's very vocal dislike of Vyaniorth was a difficult obstacle to work around, and though Allendris was confident the proud little beast would eventually get over it the constant rejection was still a bit of a sensitive subject for the bronzeling, who did so love Jada...

As if summoned by those very musings, Krypth's voice cut suddenly through the young man's thoughts, and when coupled with Vyaniorth's sharp creel of distress when the little queen's urgency snapped him from his slumber the sudden cacophony of sounds was startling and disorienting enough to send Allendris nearly toppling from his bed. It's Jada! Something's wrong! Vyaniorth wailed into his head, already bounding from his couch and towards even as his bonded still struggled to collect his bearings enough to rise. Allendris hadn't needed the dragonet to tell him who was in trouble - Krypth's widely broadcasted SOS had been obvious enough - but regardless of what the problem was the young journeyman was still fairly certain that there were people far more qualified to handle it than a glass-smith and a still-clumsly, reckless dragonet.

"Wait, Vyaniorth, stop that! You'll break it," Allendris hissed as the little bronze scrabbled at the door, leaving long claw marks in its wooden surface. Vyaniorth turled rapidly-whirling eyes onto his bonded as the man knelt beside him, wailing piteously. He didn't understand why Allendris wasn't rushing to the other human's side, and the soothing hand placed on his hide was doing nothing to calm him. But it's Jada! We have to help!

"There's nothing we can do, little one," the glass-smith attempted to reason, but with the rest of the Weyr's anxious dragons' cries joining the Vyaniorth's own, the little dragon was going wild with fear that Allendris wasn't quite sure how to ease. It turned out that he wouldn't have a chance, for it didn't take long for those whirling eyes to lock onto the door handle, which the dragonet had seen his bonded operate many times. With a sudden leap onto his hind legs, his jaws closed around the handle, and the door swung open with a tug from the clever beast - leaving Allendris to watch with a look of amazement as Vyaniorth darted out of it like a shot.

There was just no time to stand around with a stupefied look on his face, however. Allendris picked himself up and trailed after his renegade dragon. Jada was already being transported from the Weyrling Barracks and likely onto the back of a waiting dragon (one who was actually mature enough to help), and by the time the man had reached his bronzeling, the frantic little creature was already wailing about his failure to provide any comfort or assistance to the kind young woman he had grown so fond of. Allendris sighed, knowing that there was only one thing that could soothe the incoherent dragonet... and though it meant a jog ahead of them, he too was worried about Jada, and he wanted to know what had happened and to hear some assurance that she would be okay. "Come on then, Healer Hall," he told his beast, and pushed past the scattering crowd to break into a run.

Mercifully, Vyaniorth seemed to pick up on some of his bonded's calm resolve, and it was with a great deal more restraint that the little bronze rushed ahead once they'd reached the Healer Hall and began to push his through the crowd towards the room which held Jada, squawking his warnings for onlookers to move out of his way as he wound himself through the sea of legs. Allendris followed, apologizing all the while to the weyrfolk Vyaniorth upset, and the man was relieved to see that all of them seemed to be curious onlookers and the little bronzeling was wisely staying out of the way of anyone who looked important or seemed to be in a rush. Jada! Jada please wake up! the shaken dragonet creeled once he'd made his way to the front of the small crowd of rubberneckers and laid eyes on the girl's prone form, the noise loud enough to draw the attention of many who were surprised to see the precocious little bronze show up without his bonded.

Allendris, however, was soon to follow, and he felt a great deal of relief to see Valerian already there. So he wasn't the only or even the first non-healer to stick his nose directly into Jada's business. He still expected for his and his own to be chased out or scolded for being in the way at any moment, but for now he would use this opportunity to get a better grasp on the situation. Perhaps if he knew what was going on, he could calm Vyaniorth down enough to get him out of the way. With that in mind, the glass-smith came up behind Valerian, almost cringing as he got a good look at the young woman who currently held the Healers' undivided attention. He knew in an instant exactly what was wrong, even without having heard Talian's call for assistance, but even at the Glass-smith Hall he had never seen an infection so widespread or so advanced. His own boyhood injury had been limited to his hand, and with his livelihood on the line its careful treatment and care had been of paramount importance. How could they all have been so lax in paying attention to Jada's wounds?

Still he asked, in the dull tone of a man who simply wanted to hear the reassuring sounds of another's voice in a tense moment. His voice was soft, and to Valerian alone - the last thing Allendris wanted to do was disturb the Healers in their work. "What happened here?"

R’nd was, perhaps unsurprisingly to some people he knew, visiting at the Weyrling Barracks, checking up on some of the acquaintances he had made since they arrived and attempting to meet some of the others he hadn’t had a chance to greet before, especially his fellow blueriders. There was also that gorgeous man that had Impressed bronze he had to track down at some point. Hadn’t he heard B’jin Searched him? Perhaps he could ask his friend for an introduction. Not that anything could come of the meeting beyond a friendship now that there was a young and needy dragonet in the picture. He still felt bad for Erisi having to give up sexual contact for at least a turn. R’nd remembered those days with less than fond memories and Ayyonth always laughed when it came up.

Despite Kerrin’s shrieking about him hitting on his classmates before and his new attitude towards the Weyrlings because he didn’t Impress, R’nd couldn’t think of a reason why he should have felt guilty for being at the Barracks when Krypth’s scream hit him. Socializing hour quickly came to an end as R’nd bolted out the door and down the hall to where he saw Talian carrying Jada. An offer for a lift on Ayyonth to the Healing Hall was quickly given, as his blue landed near the door, crouching down to assist in getting everyone on board. On the short flight over, R’nd couldn’t help but realize this was the third time now that Ayyonth had shuttled someone to the Hall or their hut to seek medical attention and sent waves of affection and pride to his lifemate for helping as much as they did.

When Talian and Jada were back on the ground with the Healer running inside, R’nd took another moment to thank Ayyonth before following with Jada in his arms. He wasn’t quite sure what he could do, not having any training in healing, but Talian seemed to like his babbling to B’jin to distract him from the pain, so there was that to fall back on. But Jada didn’t seem lucid as he stepped into the medical room, grey eyes unable to tear away from her prone form when he set her down on the table. Still, he would let her know that someone was there with her, just in case she could hear him, and then get out of the way for Talian to do what he could.

“Hey, Jada, it’s R’nd,” he grabbed the tips of her fingers in his, giving them a light squeeze as he spoke, hoping he was a reassurance after all and not about to irritate her by seeming like he was flirting with her while she was injured, “I’m here with you but I don’t want to be in the way. Talian will fix everything, but not with me hovering over you. Just stay calm and focus on him, okay?” Completely going against his fear of thinking she would misinterpret his concern, R’nd bent down and softly kissed her forehead before finally stepping back so Talian and any other Healers he called for could work without interruption.

It was amazing how quickly people arrived and who arrived. Some were clearly there to gawk and see if the new goldrider would die while others seemed to be her friends that Impressed alongside her. While seeing B’jin first startled him, R’nd wasn’t surprised that the greenrider was there. He had Searched her as well, hadn’t he? B’jin was also a father and it was sort of sweet to see him whispering reassuring words as he tended to her with a wet cloth. That was a man that knew what to do in a crisis and how to make himself useful. R’nd watched with admiration at the surety and calmness B’jin projected but he still didn’t make an attempt to join in and instead stayed back near a wall, out of the way but available if needed.

She was in and out of consciousness, but she was aware that they were flying. She was aware of arms around her, and Krypth's fear. Now now, none of that, she tried to say, but it came out something more like a moan. Her fingers twitched as she tried to move her arm. So blurry. It was probably a blessing that she didn't remember how she got off the dragon, or how she got onto the table in Healer Hall. Screaming and keening beat at her ears and she whined, trying to press her hands to the tortured appendages. Loud, loud. Cold water pressed to her face and she screamed, though maybe it was only so loud to her own ears, trying to push at the people pushing the icy water to her. She was already cold enough, why were they doing it more. Were they trying to torture her? It was working. Darkness.

Jada blinked feverishly-shining eyes, turning them accusingly in the direction B'jin and his soothing voice as he held the chilled cloth to her forehead, trying to aid in bringing down her fever. "Lk'ed." Lunkhead. "m'Col. Nor." I'm cold. No more. He stepped to the side, but he didn't seem to be paying her any mind at all. So many people were looking at her! She had a cold, it wasn't like... Her little one? She wasn't pregnant. "Krp?" yes, that had to be it. Where was Krypth? Why wasn't she feeling her panic anymore? "Krp!" she tried to push up, but hands held her down. Darkness. there were things going on around, but she didn't understand time. Everything was dripping slowly, blurred and muffled, and loud. And then silence.

She gasped as something brushed against her arm, the sensation burning through her like fire. She tried to shove up, her mind moving faster than her body- or was it the other way around? She wasn't coordinated, and she also wasn't moving. Her wrists wouldn't bend, they were swollen. And the stink- stink. pain. That connected. "N'meed. Plsss." Numbweed, please. She needed more, desperately, it made the pain go away so she could get back to business. It stank terribly, though; that was the reason, she was sure, for the stink now. She didn't understand... Her tongue was so thick, she could feel her teeth brushing over it. It felt like sandpaper when she brushed her lips... the fuss. Lips brushed her head and- Darkness.

Squeaking and wailing, a masculine, unfamiliar mind brushing her own. Jada, wake up. "No compcate." Not complicated. She opened bleary eyes to Valerian, and was surprised to see another familiar face behind him, and a bronze head. "Vy. Vee. Allie. Val. Mawake" she greeted the whirling-eyed little creatures first, her own eyes rolling in her head, trying to see the little golden head she knew had to be around. "Krp. Krp?" Talian- they'd mentioned him, or had that been a dream? Her eyes rolled, trying to see around the people who hovered, the attention being paid to her swollen arms. "Why? Jssa Scrrch." Just a scratch. It was what she'd been telling everyone. Was her cold that bad? But she wasn't coughing. "Col." Cold. "Val?" her eyes went back to the most familiar face, pleading. He'd understand, wouldn't he? There was an ally in this. "Wann' slee' ana be oke." Wanna sleep and I'll be okay. Just like when she was little, and Szelem would tuck her in blankets and she'd sweat the cold away.

So many people.

Tal's eyes narrowed as he looked around the room, already disturbed by the influx of people. There were far too many spectators and far too few healers in his estimation! He took a deep breath and opened his mouth to shout something, but a presence at his flank stopped him short. He spun around just in time to meet Breccan eye to eye.

Calmly and smoothly, Talian motioned to the medicine shelf and gave a small nod of his head. "I need you to get some medicine for her," he replied coolly. "I'm thinking redwort, as both a cleansing agent and something to fight the infection. I'm going to go ahead and drain it," he murmured. "...and more cool water."

He didn't bother to smile or thank Breccan for her presence, not because he wasn't grateful but because he was intensely focused. He nodded curly and took a swift, graceful step towards the crowd. He glanced over all of them, quickly guessing based on facial expression and memory who were legitimate friends of the sick girl and who were just there for the scene. He hustled R'nd, Valerian and Allendris towards the back of the room where they could still see and talk to Jada without being in the way. "Keep her talking!" he whispered to them. Special attention was given to B'jin, who'd done an excellent got of sponging the girl's head with cool water.

Tal placed one slender hand on B'jin's arm and slowly pushed him away. "Thank you," he said, dismissing the greenrider gently before whispering to another healer to clear everyone who hadn't been selected from the room. Their excited chatter was an unnecessary distraction and would only upset Jada more. She was disoriented, and frustratingly enough, in some sort of denial over her conditon.

Why the shards hadn't she come to have these cuts checked out sooner?!

With that, Tal reached for a scalpel and started to unwind the bandages from Jada's arm. The wounds were ghastly, swollen and filled with pus. He frowned. He would need to drain it and flush it out to see if she had any dead tissue. He held her arm fast with one hand and inserted the blade with slow precision, puncturing the inside pocket of the cut and allowing it to start draining. He didn't bother to look over his shoulder for Breccan; he trusted she would be there promptly. He hadn't seen her in action yet, but she didn't carry herself like a slacker or an incompetent.

"I need someone to hold this girl down!" he called out, his offer extending to any of those he'd pushed aside or any of his fellow healers. He was going to need both arms in a moment. "....And fellis," he added as an afterthought.

“I don’t know much more than you,” Valerian whispered when Allendris appeared beside him and spoke in a hushed tone. Why had Jada kept this to herself? She should have known better than to hide an injury, especially when it started to hurt more than usual and she felt weak. “But it’s Jada. She’s too stubborn to go down without a fight, or to go down at all.” He remembered all the times little Jada had continued to appear at Litir’s door despite the door slamming in her face and being told to go away. She wouldn’t give up then and he knew that while they had both changed in the turns they were apart, she was still Litir’s bratty and stubborn little sister.

“I’m here, Jada.” He gave a small smile though he doubted she could see it so since he was standing by her feet, he gave one a little squeeze of reassurance, “but you can’t sleep just yet. Wait until Talian says you can, okay, J?” While his memory was spotty when it came to people that didn’t interest him or from deep in his past, Valerian did remember Litir’s nickname for his little sister and since Jada had somehow made herself into his little sister since reconnecting, Valerian couldn’t help but use it now as another means of comfort.

He frowned when Talian appeared before him and ushered them all aside while everyone else had been ordered out of the room. At least his friend knew better than to try to kick him out as well. He wouldn’t have gone and arguing would only have wasted precious time Jada needed to look at her wounds. He couldn’t see as well as where he had been standing but when the bandages were fully removed, Valerian was suddenly thankful for the distant view. His stomach went a little queasy but his concern for a friend was too great to let his mind focus on the feeling of being sick or dashing out of the door away from a sight he really didn’t want to or need to see. But the real shock came when Talian asked for someone to hold her down and he stepped forward to help despite the desire not to see the wound up close but the dragonrider that Kerrin was usually seen with stepped forward as well. Who was he and why was he even there?

He’s the rider of Ayyonth, the blue we saw outside. Ayyonth says they brought Jada and Talian here. Veeth’s gentle voice touched his mind and Valerian relaxed a bit. He had enough to worry about right then, he didn’t need to know that Jada was secretly with a bluerider. But it sounded legit enough though why the rider was already there at the Barracks was a mystery.

None of that was important, however, when Talian moved aside and Valerian got a clean view of Jada on the table once again and his mouth hung open for a moment before snapping shut. She was topless. Topless! How had he missed that before when he stormed into the room? Was he really that preoccupied with her well being that he didn’t even notice she had nearly everything on display for everyone in the room or did the female body really leave that little of an impression on him? Both theories were probable but now that he noticed, Valerian couldn’t stop noticing. On impulse, he grabbed R’nd’s arm to stop him from approaching Jada. He had to be brotherly and keep potential suitors away, right? Then again R’nd had carried her in and seen everything already anyway and Jada might not want Valerian seeing her so exposed and fevered on top of it.

Sighing, Valerian released his hold on R’nd and stepped back, silently indicating the decision he had reached. Not-so-silently, though in a low whisper, he added, “watch where your hands go and if she calls for me you better step aside, rider of Ayyonth.” Veeth hadn’t supplied him with a name but Valerian still worked with what he had.

Why are you so shocked to see Jada’s body? You like each other, right? Veeth’s melodic voice made the questions seem so innocent but it shocked Valerian all the same as he returned to stand next to Allendris. What does that have to do with anything? Who have you been talking with to think that’s normal? Who have you been talking with to think that’s not normal? But your reaction was cute, and you’re still stealing glances you know. I can’t wait until the next time you have a surprise encounter with a person. You’re going to be so much fun!

Valerian had turned his gaze to B’jin when Veeth called him out on looking at Jada’s exposed chest again, concentrating on someone else until he got the childish urge to keep peeking out of his system so he missed what else his meddling dragon was saying. What was that? Nothing. How quickly and cheerfully Veeth said that before his eyes started swirling once more with his concern for their friend had Valerian slightly worried.

He thought he had been out of the way where he was standing but when Talian ushered him further back with the weyrlings he decided could also stay, R’nd was tempted to leave. He wouldn’t go far, just wait outside with the crowd and maybe play guard to the room in case anyone else suddenly showed up. But something compelled him to stay as he tracked the flurry of activity from the way Talian barked orders to the beautiful blonde healer following them to how B’jin and the weyrlings also did their best to stay out of the way but still let Jada know they were near. It turned out it was a good thing he stayed when the master healer asked for someone to help in keeping the young goldrider still.

R’nd knew B’jin’s back was still tender and he didn’t want his companion to risk straining it again and since he didn’t know much about the other two men, he decided he was the best choice for the job. He took a step the same time the shorter of the two men near him did. Apparently his assumption was wrong, a realization that only strengthened as the kid grabbed his arm to stop him from going to Jada. Other than being available to ask Ayyonth to take them to the Hall, R’nd was feeling particularly useless in that small room but he was willing to still step down from the task if the other man wanted to be with Jada. It didn’t matter who did it so long as it was done and Talian could help the girl.

Laughter almost escaped at the way he was suddenly being addressed but it wasn’t the time and R’nd nodded his understanding, “I’ll behave, I promise.” With that odd matter settled and a glance to the gorgeous man to see if he wanted the position and then to B’jin to warn the greenrider with a look that he better not try to do it, R’nd moved to the head of the table.

He leaned over just enough so that his face was over Jada’s, but there was still a fair bit of distance between them. “Hey, gorgeous. You’re in for a treat, you know,” he placed his hands on her shoulders to help hold her down without letting her know just yet that that was why he was now lingering by her. “You’re about to be spoiled. Talian’s going to fix up your wounds, the pretty blonde I unfortunately don’t know the name of will further tend to your needs and I am going to give you a much needed massage. I’m quite skilled with my hands, you know.” R’nd glanced up for only a moment to seek out B’jin and gave him a smile. If Jada needed a second opinion, at least there was someone there that could back him up in his bragging.

“So just lie still and enjoy, all right? You needn’t worry about Krypth either. Ayyonth tells me she’s with Nirinath so she is definitely well looked after.” With a reassuring smile given to the woman that had to be frightened, R’nd started moving his fingers along the smooth skin of her shoulders while applying just enough pressure to ensure she wouldn’t successfully thrash about.

Vyaniorth treated Talian to an indignant squawk of protest at being shooed away from Jada's aside, but Allendris  himself held no objections to being ushered aside. He was already feeling quite useless and in the way as it was, and in being told where to stand he felt he could safely assume they all had Talian's passing approval to at least be in the room with their friend. And with that urgent request to keep her conscious and talking, they were given a purpose. Unfortunately, he was finding it rather difficult to confidently stand his ground once those bandages were removed, revealing just how gruesome the wounds beneath had grown over the weeks of their neglect. His stomach turned, and though he had been mindful to keep his gaze politely averted out of respect for Jada's current state of undress, the ghastly sight of Talian draining pus from the poor girl's swollen injuries was quite enough enough to eliminate any lingering masculine desire he might have had to peek.

Not that there was any, because certainly the notable shapeliness of Jada's form and the ample curve of her breasts were the absolute last thing on his mind. Certainly.

In either case, Allendris was relieved to see that the helpful bluerider seemed to have a handle on both the talking and the fulfilling the master healer's request for someone to help hold Jada down.

Vyaniorth, meanwhile, gave a strained little warble when he heard Jada calling for Krypth, apparently distressed by the thought of Jada suffering without the support of her bonded. Krypth was always horribly mean to him, but he wouldn't have minded sharing a room with the haughty gold if it meant some comfort for the ailing girl! But after checking in with the other dragons that surrounded the Healer Hall, searching for Krypth's presence, the smart little bronze quickly understood why it was better for the queenling to stay away. Nirinath would keep her calm and soothed, which would help Jada in the long run... and if not with one's bonded, then together with the senior queen was surely the best place to be.

Krypth is waiting for you, Jada. She'll be terribly upset if you fall asleep before her, you know, so you should stay awake. the little bronze assured her, clever enough to take Talian up on his plea to keep the barely-coherent girl surrounded by conversation. Of course he didn't understand the medical reasons behind that request, but he could sense his bonded's worry that Jada might fall asleep, and the bronzeling also knew that talking on the fly was not one of Allendris's particular strong suits. Fortunately, that was why he had Vyaniorth.

B'jin was oblivious to anyone and everyone else in the room. Once he'd spotted Jada, all else had become irrelevant as he focused solely on the injured girl. When she woke enough to call him a lunkhead, B'jin's face brightened noticeably, and he grinned down at the girl with warm amusement. "Hey, princess," he said softly, tone as warm and cheerful as the expression on his features. "Krypth is fine, I promise."

Talian's gentle touched caused B'jin to start, not having been paying attention to what was going on around him as he babbled at Jada. His gaze softened at Talian's quiet words, and he allowed himself to be herded backwards and out of the way. He made no motion to leave, and when he wasn't immediately bombarded by someone telling him to go between B'jin relaxed a little and waited patiently, gaze locked firmly on Jada's face.

Oh, for Faranth's sake! Larrikith muttered to herself, the sound of human and dragon voices was still loud and abrasive and the little green was sure she was getting a headache. She had no idea how Talian was managing to hear his own thoughts, let alone the speech of the other humans bustling around the room with him. It had to stop! Standing outside the window so she could peer in, Larrikith took a moment to watch through her own eyes instead of B'jin's, who was oblivious to any and everything but the girl. Your lover's about six steps to your left. Larrikith said in amusement, watching as B'jin startled again and his head whipped around to find R'nd with surprise, standing with Valerian and Allendris, no less. Gaze shifting with a thoughtful look, B'jin realised he had a personal connection with most of the people in the room, and he wasn't sure exactly how well that was going to bode for him when D'ren quizzed him on why, exactly, another one of his chosen kids was trying to kill themselves.

'Why me' was trying desperately to make it's way into B'jin's line of thought, though Talian's bark had his mind clearing and B'jin's weight swaying forward, intent on moving in to assist with holding down the girl so Talian could work. He managed to take four steps before he was frozen in place by R'nd's warning look. Emotions swirled over B'jin's face faster than colours in a dragon's eye, before he settled on a playful pout and slipped across to join the two Weyrlings. His fingers brushing R'nd's waist as he passed in a silent greeting, B'jin gave an amused snort when he caught the man's words to Jada, brown eyes laughing.

R'nd's glance and smile had B'jin's eyebrows arching high and a teasing smirk appeared on his own lips, expression twisting into wide eyed innocence. "I'm sure I have no idea what he's talking about!" B'jin used turns of training to pull up a tone of indignantly playful horror. He broke it with a cheerful grin and a wink to the bluerider. Feeling eyes on him, an eyebrow arched with a mirthful question when he caught Valerian staring at him. His smirk widened slightly, blatantly asking the young man 'jealous?'. While B'jin had no serious interest in Valerian beyond their bizarre form of friendship, he wasn't about to miss the opportunity to tease the young man. Allendris was an entirely different story, but his relationship with the stoic young man was generally limited to an extreme lack of alcohol (the horror!) and gentle teasing that revolved around B'jin being a pirate (something B'jin would likely never let him live down. Ever.). As a result, while he stood companionably with the two young men, it was Valerian at the brunt of his humour, rather than Allendris.

Satisfied that her human was functioning once more, Larrikith's mind reached out to touch gently on that of Krypth, her voice soft but determined as she bespoke the baby queen. Your girl is being looked after by the very best, Larrikith said seriously, her tone carrying the conviction of someone with experience in the matter. And he will soon have her well again... there was a resounding 'but' there, as Larrikith paused before continuing. However, if he has to work in all this noise, he surely is going to take that much longer. So, if your Queenliness would be so kind as to shut up the chorus of dragons squawking like Wherries, you will find your human back where she belongs that much faster. Larrikith's voice was firm in her conviction of this, though she was particularly thankful that B'jin was preoccupied while she bespoke the young gold. Sometimes, a green just had to do what she had to do and without the power to make the idiot beasts still squawking do as she said, the tiny dragon turned on one of those that could. She had the power, and she might as well learn to use it when it would really count.

Her shirt! Her shirt had gone Between! The realization hit Jada like a clay brick when she stared up at the fact that there were currently no female faces she recognized around her body. There were one or two, but why- wha? "Gon draaai? Wha?" Gonna drain? What? "Bahbah, Lk'ed." Her eyes drifted to Talian, who was lifting her arm. "Nor colder, Ayen." No cold water, Talian! She'd had enough of that! She needed a blanket, she was cold enough already. The heat coursed through her veins, fire and fever. The Healer lifted her arm, and she moaned through dry lips as he- "Ahhhh!" her cry was louder this time, pained. What was he doing?! That hurt! It burned, and she cried out- surging upwards into R'nd's hands. "Nononono." It hurt, and it stank, and she was going to be sick.

The sweet little words of B'jin and R'nd went terribly unappreciated as the Harper made the loudest noise she'd made in days, a shriek of pain as the knife opened back up infected wounds. Why was he so sharding strong? Her spine arched, and she keened, but between Talian's grip and the superior strength of R'nd, Jada wasn't able to pull away. "Val!" she tried again, beseeching him. He was the closest thing she had to family. He wouldn't let them hurt her anymore. Not for- The smell made her gag; and the fact she was shirtless! "Ow!" Out! Her free arm pointed towards the area, then fell limp to her side as she almost-

Krypth is waiting for you, Jada. She'll be terribly upset if you fall asleep before her, you know, so you should stay awake. the voice was mild, invasive. Jada didn't like the owner anymore, she'd changed her mind.

So many people wanted to be here, but she didn't want all those people she didn't know still staring. Not when her shirt had gone Between. R'nd and B'jin were on the ignore list, for they were wicked souls. Valerian was okay, he could stay. Talian should leave, but he was the doctor. How to deal with Allendris? "Val," she asked again, "'ing fa me?" Sing for me? It would make her feel better.

Her hand dropped to the side, fingers twitching. "Oo boy, Vy." she told the bronze, not intending on being patronizing, but more reassuring.

And then she screamed again, arching her midsection off the table (since she couldn't move anything else) as Talian hit a particularly... painful part of his treatment.

The commotion in the room provided excellent cover for I'shan, who poked his head around the corner and peered in with not malicious intent, but certainly aggressive curiosity. Ilveriath was among the calmer and more optimistic of dragons at that moment, in a time when many others were screaming their throats out. If Ilveriath was calm, I'shan saw no reason to panic.

His optimism was short lived. Brown eyes widened as he surveyed the scene; at least two weyrlings and two grown riders in the room, as well and two unImpressed healers. Apparently unimpressed healers, too. What had Jada done to herself to earn that scolding expression Talian was wearing?

Of course, I'shan's guts twisted when he finally laid eyes on Jada herself, distracted from her terrifying toplessness by the grotesque nature of her wound. I'shan's face contorted into a genuine expression of shock and shame, jaw slack and eyes wide. He was extra ashamed when he realized the riders present were B'jin and R'nd, neither of whom he wanted to disappoint, but that's exactly what I'shan figured would happen when they realized he was there sniffing for trouble. It was just a peek, right?

Ashamed, he slowly slithered backwards and disappeared into the hallway again, before the healers could scream at him.

Shards!

Breccan neither expected nor needed any thanks from Talian. The moment his request was out of his mouth she was gone, forgetting about his presence as totally as he forgot about hers. Redwort was an obvious solution, for its antiseptic properties, but she'd spent plenty of time stocking the cupboards here with other remedies. Moving quickly, she snagged redwort with one hand even as her other flickered across labeled bottles. She dismissed most of those that had to be taken internally; the girl was thrashing and seemed incoherent, which made her rather doubt she'd want to sit for a quiet cup of tea. Besides, most of those would need to be boiled or steeped. No time now.

Fellis was another obvious choice, and one of the more immediate ones. She had several candidates in mind for an antiseptic poultice, but that would come after Talian's bit. Stepping back to the Master with a solution of redwort and the small bottle of fellis, she noticed vaguely that most of the chatter had stopped, with only a few people remaining in the room. Good. That would make it easier on Jada, she guessed. Her own general lack of a bedside manner was one of the biggest reasons she'd gone into herbology rather than a specialty that required direct patient care. She wouldn't have considered getting everyone out of the room until someone bumbled into her.

Her eyes moved to the suppurating wounds along the girl's arms, wondering when she'd gotten them, before she recalled that she'd been attacked at the Hatching. Her own wounds were healing nicely, a pair of shallow slashes on her face. Some of the scabs were already falling off to reveal sensitive pink skin, but there was no evidence of any healing activity on Jada's arms. What kind of ninny didn't deal with something like that? Her eyes narrowed, and she very nearly lost the temporary hold she had over her emotions. A moron had Impressed Gold. Awesome.

Talian puncturing a sac of pus brought her nicely back to the present, and as the natural drainage slowed, she sluiced redwort into the wound by slow degrees, flushing what remained in the area. She briefly caught a reference to a 'pretty blonde' and glanced up, faintly amused, to meet the eyes of the shaggy-haired man holding Jada down. A very small smile played on her lips as she went back about her business; professionalism was key, but every girl liked to hear they were pretty once in a while.

Back to business, she kept an eye on Jada, and the moment the girl screamed again, she took the opportunity to neatly toss two drops of undiluted fellis into the wide-open mouth. It would doubtless taste terrible, but it would do the job, inebriating her without knocking her out. Fellis wasn't quite as good for pain as numbweed, but that wouldn't come until the end, and no one wanted to hear all that screaming. As Talian moved on to another area, she moved smoothly behind him, patiently rinsing the thick pus from whatever he pierced. Her mind was already racing ahead, and she beckoned another healer over and asked for a kettle of hot water. Even if they couldn't get a tea in her, some of the plants functioned better in the body if they were steeped first.

"Shhhh," Talian said softly, reaching over with one hand and running it across Jada's forehead. What appeared outwardly to be a gesture of concern was also practical; he was checking her temperature, as evident by the use of the back of his hand instead of the palm. Her fever lingered, but it was no longer dangerous.

"Are you cold, Jada?" he cooed, asking an obvious question in hopes of getting a more direct answer from her. Her skin was still warm to the touch. "Don't worry, it'll be over soon. Just keep telling me how you feel, okay?" He was calm on the outside, but inside his mind was racing like a madman; racing, but brutally focused on the task at hand. Business as usual, or at least as usual as this business could ever be.

Once the others had the poor girl pinned, Tal returned to his previous task. Breccan was soon at his side, as he'd hoped and expected. "Thanks," he said under his breath as he worked to drain the wound. He noticed Breccan's opportunistic use of fellis and managed a fleeting smile. "Good work. Keep the water coming," he said to her, eyes never leaving Jada's arm as he swiftly made his incisions and allowed the wound to drain. Together, they'd soon flushed it out, but Talian was soon greeted with an unwelcome sight.

"Shards," he hissed through gritted teeth. He could see a strip of off-color flesh just inside the laceration, layered beneath the fat tissue. The very core of the wound had  festered and died. The resulting strip of dead flesh would have to be removed. It was a mess.

"Necrosis," he said, flashing a serious look to Breccan. He would need to finish draining the wounds on both arms before he could remove it, since he'd need to see if she had any rot in her other arm as well. He moved quickly around the table and unwound the second bandage.

The other arm wasn't so serious. He inhaled deeply, relieved, and made short work of the draining. Afterwards, he handed his blade to Breccan. "Cleanse this with redwort, please," he asked before curtly walking across the room, diving into the shelf of bottles and velveteen bags containing medicinal herbs.

He quickly located some featherfern tonic and returned, thrusting forward to the nearest unoccupied pair of hands: Allendris. "Put three drops of this under her tongue once the fellis takes effect and she stops trashing," he instructed mechanically before peeling his gloves away and reaching for a fresh pair. "It'll help her fever."

He discarded the bloodied gloves, trusting one of the other healers to collect and dispose of them, before he returned to Jada's mangled right arm. He retrieved his scalpel from Breccan and nodded a hasty thanks before leaning forward, hands steady and eyes narrowed, and started to plan how he would remove the necrotic flesh. There wasn't too much, not enough to actually cripple the girl, though she would probably need some therapy to get full use of her arm again.

Good thing, too. Much longer and she'd have lost the whole arm.

Talian shook his head. "Breccan," he said aloud, cutting his eyes towards her. His voice remained steady. "Go ahead and start flushing out and closing her other arm," he instructed as he reached forward, slowly and fluidly making the first cut.

His second real surgery. His heart didn't pound so much this time, but his patient's screams were no easier to tune out. He just had to ignore them, fade into his own realm whether nothing else existed. Just him and the knife.

Allendris was not medically trained, but he was well-read enough to know that a word like necrosis was not a welcome guest in such a situation as this, and even if he didn't then Talian's grim expression would surely be enough to supply him with a hunch that not all was well. Picking up on his bonded's unease, Vyaniorth crooned softly, a soothing sound for both his lifemate and for the girl whose hand he craned forward to nudge gently in response to her reassuring praise. He snuffled a little at the smell that invaded his nostrils at the increased proximity, but for the most part the little bronzeling quite valiantly ignored it. Had it been anyone else on the table, though, odds were high that there would be no convincing him to stay so close.

The glass-smith blinked in quiet shock when Talian unexpectedly thrust the bottle of tonic in his idle hands with mechanically-delivered his instructions. He opened his mouth to protest - perhaps Talian had mistaken him for healer-trained? - but the other man left just as suddenly as he'd come, heading immediately for his tools to begin the next procedure. Allendris was forced to conclude that there had been no mistake, and he really was expected to administer a medicine he'd never seen before to a terribly sick girl with only the vague information that 'it would help'... and furthermore he was surely expected not to screw it up.

The healer is not worried about that, so you can do it, Vyaniorth assured his chosen smoothly. He didn't understand the Allendris's hesitation; 'give three drops' seemed like fairly a simple and straight-forward set of instructions to him. In fact, if he had hands like humans had, he'd just take the bottle and do it himself! Of course Vyaniorth didn't understand the potential repercussions of a mis-administered medication, nor did he realize how hard it would be to place three drops of anything beneath the tongue of an uncooperative patient. Regardless, a wave of assurance from the dragonet sent Allendris on his way to Jada's side, with the bronze curling around his legs as he leaned over to look into her fevered, pain-filled eyes. Though he couldn't help but notice that the vision of heated amber beneath thick, half-mast lashes was truly beautiful, it was a sight he quickly decided he didn't care to see again.

Allendris could tell as the young woman's thrashing eased and her gaze grew increasingly unfocused that the fellis was beginning to take effect. That was his cue, apparently. He nodded his apologies to R'nd, whose massage he was interrupting when he moved a hand to brush a twisted lock of sweat-drenched hair from the burning forehead, thereby making sure he would have Jada's attention when he spoke. "Jada," he began, his voice gentle but without its usual shy softness. "I have some medicine for you, if you can swallow it for me then it will help your fever." The glass-smith had assumed that he would have to take on a tone of authority to convince the incoherent girl that she would need to accept the tonic... and hopefully she wouldn't bite him in revenge for the liberties he was taking when long and slender fingers then drifted down to her chin, gently coaxing the new goldrider's mouth to open before he could administer the dose.

Valerian was willing to accept B’jin going for guys that could be his children, so long as he wasn’t counted among those poor fools, and didn’t care that the bluerider currently sweet talking Jada seemed to rank high on the list of interest, but when that irritating smirk appeared and clearly taunted him, well that was something else. The sight and smell of Jada’s wounds had nothing on the look that was obviously done only to tease him and Valerian’s face scrunched up as if he was only barely able to keep from throwing up. The mere thought of B’jin hitting on him or them in bed together was enough to momentarily distract the young Harper from the serious situation surrounding him. At least he didn’t have to worry about ever having either nightmare come true. At a little nose brushing against his hand, Valerian glanced down to see Veeth sitting primly, giving off an aura of innocence though his eyes were swirling with his amusement.

Oh Faranth, he was a bluerider now. B’jin was a greenrider. That was an equation he didn’t want to further work out though he knew the answer would be that life was going to be stressful from now on.

His attention snapped back to Jada when he heard his nickname called out twice. Ing fa me? Valerian was confused by what was being asked of him until he ran the sentence through his mind a few times and realized Jada wanted a song. While he actually loved singing and didn’t mind being the centre of attention when music was involved, which likely surprised most people that knew him as the guy that stood back and observed more than spoke, Valerian hadn’t sang publically since arriving at Katila. He still hummed songs while alone in his room, working on a song or simply because he was bored, and actual singing was done out at his tree where he sat alone. Jada sure picked an interesting time to get him to break his silence and show off his voice because there was no way he would tell her no right then. If she had been perfectly healthy and trying to tease him into singing, then she would have earned a glare and denial, goldrider and hope for the future or not.

But what to sing? He could treat her to one of his original songs but she wasn’t in any shape to appreciate that treat. So that left a song everyone knew. No, one that likely only B’jin would know since he was a Harper. There was a song Jada’s mother loved to sing for lessons and Valerian had been treated to that wonderful voice again and again over the turns and hearing her sing the ballad that wasn’t too popular outside of the Hall was a treat every time. Since it was such a staple of their childhood, it seemed like a good choice for the moment. Of course it could backfire and make Jada emotional and distraught but he had more faith in the stubborn brat than that. Besides, Breccan had just slipped something to Jada and he imagined it was fellis which would aid in keeping her calm.

Without another thought, Valerian started the song as he took one step forward and to the right so he could see Jada’s face and she could see him if she tried to glance around for him. While his spoken voice was soft and often carried a bored intonation, his singing voice was a strong tenor, though the higher register weren’t easily reached after puberty settled in. He knew there were better singers out there, but Valerian was still proud of his ability to carry a tune and give songs the respect they deserved. A quick glance and slight nod was given to B’jin as the only indication that he was okay with the senior Harper joining in if he did in fact know the song.

B'jin had little to no medical knowledge, so Talian's use of the word 'necrosis' went over his head. The only medical terms he cared for were 'numbweed' (bad) and 'fellis' (good). Beyond that, he simply hadn't been in enough tight situations to both to educate himself about the ins and outs of looking after onself, or not as the case may be. He was fit and healthy, and healers had a tendency to change that for the worse as soon as the word 'allergy' was applied in addition to 'numbweed'. To further his lack of care on that particular scope (Talian could and would fix anything) B'jin stopped paying attention completely as he watched Talian demand Allendris work, and brown eyes traced the movements of the bewildered young bronzerider with a subtle little smirk touching the corner of his lips.

As Allendris spoke to the young woman with a gentle touch, B'jin's smirk grew to full width, white teeth biting down on his bottom lip in a deviously coy expression, eyes alive with amused lust as he watched the young man's actions and his complete lack of awareness of how he was broadcasting himself. He was inexcusibly reminded of the night he'd stolen the young man away from his home, and what a fun night that had been! He really did need to get the young man drunk again... B'jin felt Larrikith's tolerant exasperation for his train of thought, her bright eye peering in through the window to see the scene from her own perspective.

Both rider and dragon were slightly startled when Valerian stepped forward and began to sing, apparently out of the blue, as neither had heard Jada's slurred request. B'jin's gaze shifted from where he'd been checking Allendris' out with far less innocent intentions than the apprecitive look he gave Valerian, enjoying the sudden swell of music in the air, countering the panic and the obnoxious babbling of those still peering in through the door Talian had shoved most of them out of. It took B'jin a moment to place the song; while he was in no way at all up to date on the latest tunes being woven in the Harper Hall, B'jin was familiar with more of the older pieces though he hadn't heard the song in question in quite a number of turns. His expression softened as he enjoyed the young man's voice and a song he hadn't heard in a while, before lighting up at the unspoken invitation from Valerian.

B'jin's stance straightened unconsiously as he breathed in and held it for a moment, waiting to throw his voice out alongside Valerian's. While the younger harper hadn't sung publically since his arrival, B'jin hadn't done so since before his lashing. Unwilling to call additional attention to himself, the man had avoided being roped onto the Harper's stage in the dining hall, a place he could usually be seen. Despite his love of drawing or playing instruments, B'jin's real talent lay with his voice. It had frustrated his masters greatly to learn B'jin felt lyrics had a tendency to ruin good music (a feeling that was only strengthened when his complete inability to write a song was brought to light). Like the young bluerider, however, B'jin took pride in his voice and his ability to manipulate it, especially after his turns of careful tutoring.

Stepping forward quietly, B'jin placed himself between R'nd and Valerian, brown eyes bright with joy as he let the song wash over him and forget the horror of the situation the young woman had brought upon herself, his singing voice thick with the thrum of emotions he rarely censored when speaking, but would never hold back in song.

She hadn't missed the 'pretty blonde' who was bustling busily around, and kept giving Jada slanty-eyed glances every once in a while. Jada didn't know what the problem was, but if she wanted to- ow! She gasped, glaring over at Talian. "Ow." she told him, exaggeratedly. He wanted to know how she felt? Like a sack of wherry dung, and she was going to fight his nurse. Talian was stabbing her, and the blonde was pouring what felt like ice water into her wounds, and ugh. Jada shivered, cold. Her mouth opened, keening in pain- and two drops of something bitter and disgusting landed on her tongue. The Harper gagged, making a face. That was disgusting! "Kosis?" Jada asked, not liking the look on Talian's face. That sounded serious. She tried to move her arm, to look at the wound, but seeing the- yeah, she'd leave that work to the healers. Jada wasn't very fond of the sight of gross things, even less so when it came from her own body. Blood was a no-no.

Amber eyes glanced around the room as Valerian started singing, trying to catcha  glimpse of him- ah, there he was!- and lips curving at the song he decided to perform. She knew that song, and she knew why he'd picked it. What with Talian on one arm and Blondie on the other, all she could do was try and beam a smile in his direction. It was lazy, her body going limp between the fellis and the song that her mother used to sing. If Valerian had wanted to relax her, he couldn't have done too much better! (The Fellis got no credit.) She heard Talian say something to Allie, but her attention was on Valerian. Come to think of it, had she heard him sing here yet? Or was she the recipient of his first Katilan vocal performance? (That was a flattering idea!)

Flushing, flushing, all the yucky gone away The word flushing was such a strange word. It had a swirly, swishy sound, too...

There was movement around her head, and Jada tilted her chin up to glance at Allendris, peering at him as best she could through her lashes, and the fact that her body was feeling much heavier since the bitter drops into her mouth. It wasn't a bad heavy, but just heavy. His hand brushed over her forehead and she smiled at him, drugged and dreamy. "Allie." she acknowledged. He had something for her? She shook her head. "Uh uh." she told him. It was probably going to be nasty, bitter and sour like the stuff that Breccan had given her. (The Healer woman was not going to be her friend until Jada got the taste out of her mouth.) She heard another voice join in on the song and glanced over. B'jin was going to sing too?

Jada was a child when it came to medicine. She didn't like to take it, and the stuff that Breccan had given her was as bitter as poison. Not that Jada had actually ingested poison knowingly. It was entirely possible, however, that she was correct and the Healers were, in fact, trying to kill her.

Allie's fingers drifted over her flesh, coaxing at her mouth. Jada growled, tried to clench her jaw. She tried to bite him- Nom nom! Chomp chomp! Allendris would have no victory here! Alas, her belligerence came to naught when his fingers (rather deftly, she might add) got her mouth open. No time to sulk- he was administering one drop of nasty tonic. She wasn't going to make this easy! She glared up at him through her lashes, but in the end... Allie's fingers were talented? She lost the battle of jaw strength vs nimble fingers. Two drops, then three, and her mouth got to set itself in a firm pout, nose wrinkled.

Though R’nd paid Jada due attention as he held her down while continuing to make it seem like he wasn’t there solely to play the aggressor, he still tossed a small smile at B’jin and showed off his skills of flirting with his eyes. It was a horrible thing to be doing while the situation the young Harper girl was in but R’nd believed, and he suspected B’jin did as well, that Talian would fix everything and Jada wouldn’t have a thing to worry about. He whispered that much to her once or twice as well when she tried to thrash more than usual before the fellis started to calm her. It was only when Talian mentioned some medical term that didn’t sound too good that R’nd worried for only the second time since seeing Jada unconscious. His eyes tracked the Healer’s movements for several seconds, hoping he would say more, something good, but then turned his attention back to what he had been charged with doing.

That was, until Allendris approached. Yes, that man was beautiful and while he had been flirting with B’jin not minutes before, R’nd kept himself in check with the young bronzerider. There would be time enough later to get to know the man better though it would only be through talking for the next turn until his dragonet matured. Oh, how sad it was that he didn’t cross paths with the man before the clutch hatched! As Allendris spoke, R’nd could only say how adorable and even precious he was. He tried to sound so manly and authoritative with his order for Jada to swallow the new round of medicine but he only came off as a shy and awkward man playing at being a Healer. Adorable, indeed. No comment was made, however, as R’nd didn’t want to interrupt the efforts of getting the scared woman to follow orders.

It was when his gaze drifted back to B’jin that his amusement turned to confusion. His friend was openly lusting after Allendris, which R’nd couldn’t blame him for doing, though R’nd felt it odd since he couldn’t recall seeing the greenrider act in such a way before. It wasn’t like he followed B’jin everywhere over the turns, contrary to what Kerrin likely believed, so this quite possibly wasn’t anything unusual. What was possibly even more unusual, however, was how R’nd was now considering to not pursuing the bronzerider because B’jin seemed to have an interest in him. Unless someone was weyrmated, R’nd never particularly censored himself in who he was interested in though if a friend also showed interest, then he did back off, so perhaps that’s all there was to his confusion of emotions then as well.

Luckily, Jada’s friend started singing then, it startled him only because he didn’t think the emotionless boy would answer the request he had barely caught himself. But R’nd was glad for it since it seemed to work better than even the amazing little invention of fellis with calming the woman and it distracted him from thinking too much on anything that didn’t concern the healing of Jada who was more than the new goldrider but also a friend. He tossed an appreciative smile to Valerian and focused back on what the Healers were doing, still clinging to the belief they could solve everything. There was one thing, however, that hadn’t been solved which R’nd knew wasn’t top priority given the wounds that needed immediate attending but he believed Jada had it ranked higher. “Talian,” he addressed the Healer he knew the name of, unsure of the blonde’s though Talian could also delegate to others in the room, “I believe the young lady continues to say she’s cold because of her current state of undress. Perhaps even a small towel to cover her up will also help ease some of her tension?”

R’nd glanced back down to Jada, smiling softly and spoke with a lowered voice that was meant just for her though there was still the potential of the Healers or Allendris catching what he said given their close proximity, “not that I mind the view, as you well know.” His turn at keeping Jada talking was cut short when another voice joined Valerian’s and R’nd turned to see B’jin singing with all of the passion he was known for when he took to singing. The bluerider could sing, though anyone could sing, but he wasn’t overly skilled at it and so he held a deep respect for those that could not only carry a note but convey such beautiful messages and images with only their voice. With a bright smile, R’nd turned back to Jada, “they’re singing just for you.”

'Good work.' The words never failed to make Breccan flush with warmth and pleasure, the pride in herself she didn't know how to get on her own. The only thing that would have made her happier would be Jada saying she wanted to fight; 'Blondie' would have taken her then and there and hang the consequences. Besides, with such an advanced case of infection, she could really have rung the girl's bell. Too bad.

Talian's hissed curse made her lean forward and catch sight of precisely what had caused him such dismay: rotting flesh. Nothing like necrosis to turn the stomach, and even Breccan had a bit of a rough moment seeing something so obviously dead inside something still alive. Naturally, Healer had beaten anything like a gag reflex out of her over the Turns, and she kept herself neatly in hand to steadily meet Talian's eyes. She didn't respond verbally, but held his gaze and followed him to the other arm, doing what had become almost automatic by now: wait for Talian to cut, flush the pus out of the incision, move on to the next cut.

She took his scalpel wordlessly, dropping it into the faintly pink solution of redwort that was used to sterilize just about everything. She'd have preferred to boil it, but there really wasn't time for that, and good scalpels were difficult to come by. It was difficult to make a straight, fine blade, even with a good mold, and they could be further warped by poor sharpening. Better to stick with a blade you knew was good than risk a new one, especially when you were operating in such a mobile place. All the tendons to control her fingers were up in that mess, and a bad cut could really make Jada useless.

Breccan had just enough time to freshen up her supply of clean water before she was returning Talian's scalpel. She had no desire to step on his toes and she was entirely confident he knew precisely what he was doing, but she was somewhat disappointed that she wouldn't be able to watch much of the surgery if she was stitching up the other arm. Ah, well. It wasn't a good idea to leave something like that wide open, and she was a little curious to see how she'd do. It had certainly been a while since she last sutured.

Moving back across Jada's body, she realized suddenly that two people were now singing, of all things. It was a pleasant enough sound and both of them seemed quite talented, but why on Pern had they decided to sing? Odd. Odd people, all of them.

For her part, she quietly requested needlethorn and catgut. A final flush to remove straggling pus was quickly accomplished, and then she paused, needle in hand. Numbweed would be polite, but a quick look at the girl's face told her she probably didn't need it. Waste not! she thought gleefully, though in truth Jada would experience little more than a distant pricking, nothing like the deeply unpleasant business of being sutured without analgesics. The first puncture of the lip of the wound was a little more difficult than she'd expected. Human skin was surprisingly stretchy, dense stuff; she'd forgotten what it felt like to push a needle into it.

Soon enough, though, she found her hands and mind remembered perfectly well how to set in a neat line of stitches, and she worked her way steadily up the arm, sneaking quick looks at Talian's more interesting surgery when she could. Her water would be coming to a boil soon, so she asked a Healer to grind up dried ginger and garlic in the meantime; she'd put a hot poultice on the whole mess when she was finished.

One wrong move would be a disaster.

Talian took a moment to breathe, closing his eyes and shutting the others out for the briefest of moments while he focused his mind. Time seemed to slow down in times like these, tense times when every second counted and every move could end in disaster.

Talian, the sheltered boy who didn't like change and hated attention, thrived in chaos. He could trust his instincts and feel totally confident in himself in an emergency, something he couldn't do in any other context. If he had time, he tended to think too much. He would over think, second guess, and complicate anything before him as long as he had the time to do it. When a patient was dying and the room flew into chaos, he could streamline his thoughts and throw his insecurities aside. It was one of the few situations that made him strong.

He retrieved his blade from Breccan and moved to make the first incision. The first cut was especially important; he needed to move perfectly, drawing a thin line between living and dead tissue. It came easily. He narrowed his eyes and leaned forward, studying the arrangement of fibers and tissues as well as he could in the low light. It was a familiar structure, something he'd handled dozens of times and studied hundreds. He felt like he knew what he was doing, even if he'd never actually done this kind of work before. Well, not on a living person at least.

It was good. He needed to look like he knew what he was doing, or at least that's what he reminded himself. He didn't particularly care how he looked, but there were a lot of people in that room counting on him. Watching him. Judging him?

He felt an odd desire, something completely alien to his usual mood while working. Was it pride? The desire to please someone? He scowled a little as he continued making his fine cuts, gently scraping away rotten fibers away from living ones and being ever-mindful of Jada's future mobility. He occasionally pulled his blade back to rinse it off, taking that opportunity to examine the wound from afar.

The job was half done. He went in again, carefully slicing the underside of the rotten tissue and lifting it away, leaving only fragments of the necrosis behind the scrape away moments later. He paused, allowing another healer to flush it out, before returning. It was almost finished now.

He pulled the edges of Jada's wound apart with one hand, widening the gash so he could see more clearly into it. He did so as delicately as possible, trying not to cause her pain, but that was probably inevitable now. He knew Breccan was probably finished now. All that remained was to finish this and close Jada up.

He looked at her arm and smiled. The necrosis had been successfully removed, and most of the tissue in her arm had been spared; at least as much as they could be.
He'd had to remove a segment of the damaged muscle, but enough of it remained that he figured her arm would work again. He'd clipped a few nerves, but if anything, that would be a mercy.

A numb spot on her arm was better than no arm at all. It probably wouldn't look pretty either, but he would see what he could do.

"All right, let's get her cleaned and closed up," he said, quickly moving to do just that. Within a few more minutes, Jada's arm was clean and stitched closed, though it hardly looked like a success to the untrained eye.

To Talian, it felt like a miracle. He sighed, his shoulders slumping, and pulled his headband down around his neck.

"What a sharding night..."
