The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! R’dare got along easily with everyone, even those that were a tad on the cranky side or introverted. It wasn’t a goal of his to do so but if he saw someone he wanted to talk to, he did. It was pretty simple. It was why he had an odd assortment of friends though, as with everyone as they got older, some friends drifted and others became closer. He still counted T’ryn and N’mor as friends even though they lived in Ista and had Impressed to bronze dragons while he had bonded to a blue. Their friendships were a bit different now and didn’t involve running around playing games and getting into mischief like the old days but they were still enjoyable all the same. It was why he had made the journey to Ista that day.

That and his mom missed making dresses for little girls that appreciated them and had made some clothes for Amorandii after getting her new sizes from B’jin. His mom was an awesome tailor for never having been fully apprenticed and most of his own clothes still came from her hands. She had also been one of the ones to help convert N’mor’s shirts for him back after the landslide and she had mentioned being inspired again recently to make him a couple of shirts and nice jackets for Gathers and other events he might have to attend due to his status. So he found himself bogged down in a couple bags of clothing to pass over, knowing the bronzerider would see his sister soon enough to finish passing everything along.

The blue pair landed in the lower bowl as R’dare wanted to find some food to bring up and maybe a light wine. He wasn’t a huge drinker but a glass every so often was nice, especially if enjoyed with a friend over conversation. He made his way to the kitchen and pulled his best routine for getting a plate of snacks and the bottle of wine. Somehow he even managed to smile and charm enough that a woman close to his age even offered to carry it for him since he had his hands full with the gifts.

Somewhere on the way up, a devious plan popped into his head and R’dare grinned as he asked Kadaisicalth to give notice that he was popping in shortly with a surprise and he would just let himself in. Assuming N’mor wasn’t already entertaining company and R’dare highly doubted it’d be that sort of company which was why his plan for teasing the bronzerider would work so well.

“N’mor!” R’dare called out in greeting to announce his arrival a few minutes later. He let himself in as warned and smiled when he found the younger man inside. “I brought you a gift to help loosen you up. Erinea? Come on in!” He had asked her to wait just out of sight, citing he wanted to make sure N’mor was decent. But the way she came sashaying in carrying the tray of snacks and the bottle of wine, it looked like she really was what he was offering to give to N’mor and R’dare just smiled even wider. He couldn’t wait to see what N’mor thought was being offered and how he’d react.

Kadaisicalth’s is on his way up, Rhezalth announced, rousing from his lazy dozing; it was too early for the dragon to consider sleeping, but late enough that it was dark and cold and sleep sounded appealing. N’mor raised a brow from where he was sprawled diagonally on his bed, leaning against his stump as he flicked his chin with the end of his quill, drawing absently. He wasn’t as good as he used to be, having to re-teach himself since losing his dominant arm, but he was improving. “Is that so?” N’mor asked mildly, amused. Rhezalth was quite friendly when it came to T’ryn and Syrendryth – but that came from the bronze pair’s close relationship growing up, and the assistance T’ryn had given when N’mor had been injured. Beyond that, Rhezalth was a lot like a giant, silent, judgemental bastard. N’mor loved him.

Told you so, the bronze dragon said tartly as R’dare let himself into the weyr. N’mor sighed dramatically, but a smile curled the corner of his lips as he readjusted to be sitting up, watching his friend enter, his eyebrow arching when R’dare’s expression was noted. The woman that came floating in with a tray caused N’mor’s expression to flatten, and he gave R’dare a dry look. Damndable blueriders; even his friend was quickly falling into the disgusting requirements that seemed to come with a stupid blue hide. N’mor eyed the young woman. “You can put the tray over there,” and he indicated the table with a couple of chairs off to one side. Rising off the bed, the bronzerider swayed silkily over to Erinea, looped around her, and then picked up a slice of bread and cheese. Turning to look at R’dare, N’mor took a bite and waited.

R’dare chuckled at the quick change in expressions flittering over N’mor’s face and bit his lower lip to keep from bursting out in full blown laughter at the way the bronzerider completely ignored the implied situation and turned his trademark flat look on him. The poor serving girl looked a bit confused and her eyes darted between the boys before R’dare finally smiled pleasantly at her and thanked her for the help before sending her on her way.

“You suck the fun out of so many things, you know,” he commented once Erinea had let herself out. N’mor could at least pretend to play along a bit more! But nooo, he had to be a serious bronzerider even – or especially because – when hanging out with his blueriding friends. He would have flopped dramatically on the bed and pouted but R’dare wanted some of the food that was brought up and wandered over, setting the bags he had been practically dragging on the floor by N’mor.

“Mom made you and Amorandii some more clothes. She hasn’t seen your sister for a while and hopes everything fits okay.” He nudged one of the bags with a foot as he grabbed a piece of cheese, popping it in his mouth, “this one’s yours.”

His duty as delivery man for his mom done, R’dare turned his attention to the bottle of wine and occupied himself with cracking the seal and pouring them each a glass. He honestly hadn’t acquired a true taste for the beverage but knew it was usually socially expected to at least share one glass with the host and figured practicing with a friend was better than drinking it alone to get used to the taste. “And this is the actual gift to lighten you up. That, and letting you bask in my presence.” He grinned and took a sip of the wine which made his nose wrinkle slightly.

“That’s my job,” N’mor smirked, taking another bite of the bread and cheese and munching contentedly as he continued to smirk around his full mouth. His eyes glanced towards the bags R’dare was definitely struggling with, but he didn’t bother to offer any assistance – his only hand was quite preoccupied holding his food, after all. His smirk widened but no comment was made as he settled down on the edge of the table, helping himself to another bite of food before focusing on opening bottle of wine and pouring himself a glass; at least the seal had already been broken by his companion. That had been a fun skill to learn, and had wasted quite a lot of cheap wine and stained a lot of his clothing in the process.

“Of course she did,” N’mor laughed, rolling his eyes fondly and smiling as he took a sip of the wine. “I’m sure even if they don’t fit her, she’ll have aunt Andeleen find someone to adjust them.” He glanced towards the bag designated to him, and smiled. “I’ll be sure to pass her my thanks.” He could get R’dare to do it, of course, but N’mor would rather seek out the woman and thank her personally. She didn’t have to make him clothing, and he truly appreciated that she did, but also that she made sure to make pants he could actually do up and shirts he could tie one handed. It was something some of his friends and companions certainly took for granted! Besides, he had had another growth spurt and the hems of his pants were starting to look a bit short.

N’mor snorted at R’dare. “Of course it is,” he replied dryly, though he took another sip of the drink in his hand, and then exchanged the glass for his food. The woes of being one handed! “What more could a guy possibly want?” He asked rhetorically, giving R’dare a flat look before laughing again.

“Exactly! So glad you finally get it,” R’dare laughed and put a slice of cheese on a piece of bread and busied himself with devouring it. “It’s not easy being so popular and divvying out my time, you know.” He was still grinning as he washed down the food with a sip of wine. Still wasn’t something he liked but he figured a few more sips would dull his taste buds soon enough that he wouldn’t mind the drink.

“Don’t worry, one day you’ll be just as popular and know the woes I have to deal with and I’ll be here to listen to your complaints about it.” R’dare actually didn’t think of himself as popular. He had a good group of friends he liked to spend time with and he was friendly with anyone else he crossed paths with but he really didn’t think people were tripping over themselves to see him. It was nice that people liked him though.

“Anyway, you know I’m hanging out until the food and possibly the wine is gone so you might as well fill me in with what you’ve been up to lately.” This time he took only a piece of bread and pulled a piece off to pop in his mouth before tossing more questions at N’mor, “seeing anyone yet? Interested in anyone at least?”

N’mor snorted. “Nosy blueriders,” he quipped, lifting his glass once more to take a sip. R’dare might have been forcing himself to drink the liquid, but N’mor had been stealing swigs of his father’s liquor since he was big enough to pick up the glass without B’jin noticing, which when it came to alcohol at least, was saying something. N’mor felt it was probably a harper thing, though he didn’t really know that many of them. It was more a feeling; they always seemed to be drunk or drinking – certainly his father was… though it could also have been a greenrider thing. Faranth knows their life was probably better when drunk!

“Whatever my answer might be to that question,” N’mor teased as he was wont to do when such questions arose, “I will never tell you.” He was smiling, but he’d remained firm on keeping his personal life to himself, especially when it came to talking with blue and greenriders. Notorious gossips, they were, and he wasn’t interested in being on the grapevine, especially one watered by his friends! He was almost tempted to tell his friend that Rhezalth had began to take an interest in the female dragons in the Weyr, but he wasn’t really interested in where that conversation would go, either. It wasn’t like his bronze had given chase yet, he’d just been watching the Flights with a seriousness that told N’mor his dragon was weighing his options. Not that he thought Rhezalth would ever lower his standards enough to chase any of the greens he was eyeballing; arrogant bronze that he was.

I am too good for a green. As are you. N’mor flicked an amused glance in his direction, but didn’t comment.

“What about you?” He asked, teasing, sending R’dare’s question back at him. The bluerider couldn’t possibly expect any other comeback, though N’mor didn’t really think he’d give any more of a serious answer than N’mor had given him.

R’dare gave an exaggerated sigh with an eye roll at the completely predictable response to his question. Of course the damn man wouldn’t tell him anything! Why would he do such a thing like share fun information with a friend? They weren’t as close as he was with R’dal and N’mor was to T’ryn, but they still had some crazy adventures together in the past that had to count for something. As he wondered if T’ryn knew the scoop on who N’mor liked, R’dare took another swig of wine, finding it went down a bit easier with a larger gulp than a sip. It also didn’t hurt that he was eating while doing so.

“Me? I could pull the same answer as you but then we’d be left simply staring at each other so I guess I could spill some beans,” he paused to top up his glass, though he hadn’t quite finished the first serving. It was almost as if he was fooling himself. In his mind he was on the second glass but it wasn’t nearly as much as that. Which was a good thing considering he still had to be well enough in his right mind to fly them home safely.

“Nothing serious, of course, but there are a few interests,” mostly, it was interest in him, not from him, but R’dare didn’t feel like pointing that out. “And Daisi’s started chasing so that’s been… fun.” It wasn’t that he hated it, in fact he was proud to have a dragon that was ready to chase and finally, hopefully, remind the Weyrfolk that he wasn’t just one of the pesky ‘brats running about but an actual adult now. It was just that he didn’t have much say in who Kadaisicalth showed an interest in and he hadn’t quite mastered the fine art of losing and picking someone appropriate.

N’mor laughed softly at the quip, watching with amusement as his fellow dragonrider topped up the glass of wine he had barely drunk. Grey-green eyes danced with mirth as he took the wine bottle himself and filled his much closer to empty glass, raising it mockingly at R’dare before sipping, watching his friend. “If you don’t like it,” he teased, “why are you making yourself drink it?” There were plenty of people who did not like wine, and N’mor had never met anyone that had a problem admitting it. Of course, perhaps R’dare hadn’t helped himself to a lot of Katilan booze, in which case he wouldn’t know how good the liquid currently in his glass was.

Picking up a slice of bread, N’mor set it down before placing a thick slice of cheese on top. Picking it up again, he took a bite, watching as R’dare took to talking once more. He raised his eyebrows at the admittance of interest, the young man assuming (naturally) that R’dare fancied himself a couple of individuals. His other eyebrow arched up when he was informed the blue had started chasing. “They are getting to that age,” N’mor admitted, though he didn’t really feel he was at that age. Not that he’d never fantasized, and certainly there were some individuals that spiked his interest, but N’mor wasn’t sure he was ready to go bed hopping yet. Ever, probably.

Don’t take it all so seriously. Just because we are not green doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy ourselves when you want to. N’mor snorted into his food, and shook his head. Trust his dragon to be nosing around in his thoughts, and pick up on his line of confusion. Bronzeriders always seemed to be so proper and N’mor had yet to see one actively invested in a relationship with another man, which caused him no small amount of discomfort. Could he be himself, and still strike out for a Weyrleader rank? What if no one supported him, if he had no interest in any of the goldriders on a relationship level?

“Has he won yet?” N’mor asked curiously, frank expression on his face as he chased off his own inner turmoil to enquire about something he had no experience with. He’d lived with his father long enough to be around for Larrikith’s flights, but never longer than it took to flee the house (or whatever area Larrikith decided to interrupt B’jin’s life in). Flights had been explained to them, during Weyrlinghood, but damn if N’mor wasn’t morbidly curious about the whole affair!

“I’m drinking it so I can learn to like it so I don’t look more out of place than usual if I ever have to rub elbows with Holders or snooty bronzeriders who drink this stuff like water,” R’dare quirked one brow at N’mor before saluting him with his glass and taking another sip. They both knew the stereotypes that came with the colour of their dragons’ hides and since neither one of them seemed overly sensitive, it was fun to tease each other.

“And no, he hasn’t,” R’dare coughed as the wine went down the wrong pipe. How did that even happen? It was like breathing and suddenly choking. How was he that clumsy that something he was born knowing how to do betrayed him? Clearing his throat, R’dare thought about how to explain chasing and why winning wasn’t always the best outcome. “Daisi’s basing his interest solely off the dragon and I’m stuck with the rider whether I want to be or not, if he wins, I mean. And thankfully, he hasn’t won yet. It’s not that they’re older but… odd? To be avoided?” He shrugged, assuming N’mor would understand the point about age. He, at least, grew up playing with kids younger and older than him and now thought people much older than him were attractive. It was just something normal to him.

N’mor had to force himself to swallow the mouthful of bread and cheese he’d been chewing on so he could laugh without being disgusting. Shaking his head, N’mor raised his own glass once more and took a healthy sip of the liquid, swilling it across his tongue before swallowing. He quite enjoyed wine, though he would not go so far as to say he drank it like water! More regularly than water, probably… Okay, maybe like water. He laughed lightly.

“I think that’s now Flights usually work,” N’mor said dryly, looking at R’dare flatly. That was the whole point of the ‘dragon decides, rider complies’. The dragons didn’t get much say when their human half decided to tumble into bed with someone, so N’mor didn’t see much issue with the dragon dictating who the rider slept with when he was feeling randy (or she, depending on the beast in question). “Personally so long as Rhezalth doesn’t chase Grith of Larrikith, I haven’t got much issue with his choices.” The idea of coming to himself beside Parella was probably more horifying than the idea of screwing his own father. Parella was… Parella.

I have better taste than that, thank you.

N’mor laughed, rolling his eyes as he smirked at R’dare. “Rhea says he has better taste than those greens. Very reassuring.” It was, too! It was one thing to lose all sense of one’s self going into a Flight, but at least N’mor knew his dragon wasn’t going to put him into a situation that was absolutely mortifying!

“Well, maybe you should work on being as mentally stubborn with your dragon as you are with the rest of us so you can keep grounded during those flights,” R’dare knew that was possible but he felt the whole battle of wills to be too much work and didn’t think he’d ever come across a time to need it. He was pretty sure he knew who all of his relatives were so he didn’t have to worry about accidentally bedding them. Besides, he had vague recollections of flights and didn’t think it’d matter if he ended up with someone he didn’t like since it was easy enough to dress and go. You say that now but you do like to complain when I’m about to chase. Oh, we should visit when Rilaleeyth next flies. She’s rather lovely to chat with.

R’dare choked on his wine at the mention of the admittedly sweet dragon. He began coughing and, somehow, managed to set the glass down without spilling it so he could thump his chest a couple of times before putting his arms up over his head. After a moment, with eyes watering, he glanced up at N’mor with all the seriousness his normally relaxed features could handle, “Daisi wants to chase Rilaleeyth. I don’t think I’m ever visiting you again.” He’d avoid Ista forever if possible to avoid landing in J’ver’s bed. He decided his previous line of thought may have flaws in it after all and perhaps he should work his dragon on finding out the green pairs they could both agree on.

“Perhaps I should leave now just in case she suddenly springs up.”

N’mor snorted, rolling his eyes at his friend. He knew it was possible to ground a dragon from Flying, but N’mor didn’t really agree with the act. Dragons didn’t prevent their humans from tumbling between the sheets whenever they felt like it, or with whomever they wanted; he didn’t feel it fair to stop the dragons from enjoying their own sexuality when they wanted to, even if he didn’t agree with who the partner was. It probably helped that his dragon was not inclined to chase greens, and while N’mor didn’t fancy any of the goldriders, he knew they were a fact of life for many bronzeriders – especially himself and Rhezalth and their plans for the future.

An eyebrow arched upwards when R’dare suddenly started choking on his drink, amusement flickering in N’mor’s eyes as he waited for the explanation he knew would come, eventually. Sipping his own drink somewhat smugly, N’mor smirked around the lip of the glass as R’dare finally spoke. He outright laughed when he explained, ending in a round of coughing and half spluttering in delight. “Oh my!” delighted, N’mor fought for breath. “You two would make such a cute couple!” He teased, sniggering between words. “You should chat to V’ler,” N’mor snorted, shaking his head. “His blue chases anything with wings, so he should have all the information you’d need on who to avoid and who to aim Kadaisicalth at.” If he recalled correctly, his father had had V’ler speak to more than one Weyrling group about exactly that. His smirk returned. “I hear J’ver isn’t bad a flight partner, considering.” Probably had to do with how damned sweet his dragon was rumoured to be.

“If it helps, she practically never flies.” He grinned. Of course, chances were R’dare would eventually visit when she was flying. “And when she does, only a couple of dragons ever win her.” He was surprised by how much he knew, to be honest. He blamed growing up in his father’s household; it was always filled with gossiping greenriders (Par’a was by far the worst!) and then there were the blueriders B’jin occasionally socialised with, to say nothing of the other Harpers. Basically B’jin was a one-man grape vine.

R'dare was appalled at N'mor's suggestion that he'd make a cute couple with J'ver. What at all would imply such a thing? But as his friend continued speaking, R'dare wondered if he was more shocked at how much N'mor seemed to know on the subject. Maybe he had already had an encounter with the greenrider and had kept mum on it? Not likely, considering their earlier conversations and how everyone always shared who won certain green flights whether because they were desired or to be avoided.

"Well, luckily for me, J'ver doesn't have a lot of interest in blues. From what I hear, he prefers something a bit shinier." In fact, some whispered that J'ver was responsible for getting the bronzeriders back into power. He didn't know the particulars but it sounded like something the slimy green would do if it served himself well enough and kept him in a safe and elevated status.

"You know way too much about that pair, but yeah, I remember it always seemed to be the same few that would win her," the bond with a dragon made a man do strange things and R'dare couldn't fault the blueriders that encouraged or let their dragons chase Rilaleeyth or others if it made them happy despite who they might be bonded to. But he didn't think there was much that would shake up someone like D'hys and he knew how protective he was of Zeianth as the 'brats were never allowed to paint him or bother him.

"I guess it wouldn't hurt to get V'ler's lists of who to do and who to avoid but I don't really mind who he chases. Actually, maybe I need to know who to avoid when we lose," R'dare set down his cup and rolled up his right sleeve. It was starting to fade but a hand shaped bruise could still be seen on his upper arm thanks to a brownrider that either hated losing or just didn't understand what a gentle touch meant. He didn't offer any further explanation as he rolled it back down and picked up his glass again to resume his sipping.

N’mor laughed. “Lucky for me, Rhezalth is above greens.” He teased, though he didn’t think he was the type to appeal to J’ver. For one, he wasn’t whole and J’ver definitely struck him as the type who was vain enough to want a perfect partner. For all that S’kef was a piece of shit, the man wasn’t exactly unattractive. Not that N’mor was interested in him (eww!) but the point still stood.

“Dad’s a greenriding Harper,” he said dryly, looking amused, “who has a personal vendetta against J’ver.” He did not know what had caused such hatred between the pair, but it was somewhat awe-inspiring. He knew there were other riders around that would rather claw one another’s faces than speak civilly, but half the terror of the relationship between B’jin and J’ver was the fact that they coated their nasty bickering in civil conversation. He had never seen anything as horrifying as two greenriders coiled to do battle while talking politely. It was astounding.

Sipping from his drink, N’mor smiled. “It’s probably worth the time.” He didn’t really know V’ler, aside from what his dad had said in passing or he’d heard from others. Aside from the few friends he’d had before Impression, N’mor really went out of his way to avoid blueriders and he’d probably avoid his friends, too, if they weren’t so damned stubborn to spend time with him once in a while. The bronzerider’s nose scrunched up as he took in the sight of R’dare’s bruises. He did not say anything on the mark, but did nod his head in understanding. “I hear he’s pretty good with that information.” He’d even been brought in by B’jin to some classes to give exactly that list, especially to the young greenriders.

R’dare only nodded at the sound advice. He probably should seek out the blueriding Harper for more in depth lessons on the intricacies of Flights. Considering he was bonded with Veeth, V’ler likely had all of the greens’ patterns tracked and knew who to grab when they lost. It was definitely something worth looking into and R’dare gave a small crooked smirk. Being a bluerider was turning into a lot of work! He just wanted to hang out with his dragon and nap on the beach.

Eyeing his glass and then the bottle, R’dare recalled his promise, or threat even, that he wasn’t leaving until they finished the wine. At least it was starting to sort of taste good. “Since I’ll be here a while still, any other fun gossip you’ve heard from your dad or around Ista? I’ll fill you in on Fort,” not that he suspected N’mor would gossip all that much. He never had and now that he could hide behind being a well-behaved bronzerider, he likely never would. But R’dare also knew it annoyed his friend, which is why he asked. Slapping a piece of cheese onto a slice of bread, R’dare settled in for what he suspected would be a lengthier stay than N’mor would also want, but he just grinned to himself. The problems with having friends; you actually had to put up with them for a while!
