The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! B’jin was rather selfish when it came to his art. He enjoyed creating it, but was more prone to keeping it to himself than he ever was with sharing it. There were exceptions, of course, he loved giving piece of art to R’nd, to the extent that their shared weyr was filled with art, both framed and not. But R’nd was an exception, not a rule. That said, B’jin had often gifted his Weyrlings with pieces of art, and as he realised that N’mor and his class were now three years graduated, B’jin had decided to gift each of them with a piece of art.

Going through each member of that group, B’jin made sure to personalise each piece of art, focusing on memorable moments in their lives, but also good memorable moments; he didn’t do anything related to the landslide, except for N’mor’s missing arm. That alone was more than enough of a reminder of the most horrifying moment in recent dragonrider history. The scenes he sketeched in shades of grey varied from freshly hatched Impressions, to first ridden flights, hunting, bathing and sunning. They were designed to capture personality and fun times. B’jin took pride in the pieces he created, and enjoyed delivering them to the young riders as a gift for their third-year-since-graduation gifts.

That morning, with a kiss to R’nd and a warm smile, B’jin set about putting straps on Larrikith and settling himself on board, artwork secured in a small bag he had placed in his lap. He was excited and pleased with himself as the pair set off to visit Ista, where B’jin knew N’mor was living now, along with a couple of other past students he had artwork for. They arrived to a bright morning, and B’jin looked around with interest; it was his first visit to Ista, as he hadn’t bothered when the Weyr was being opened up and while he loved his son, the boy visited him enough that B’jin didn’t feel the need to seek him out.

Directing Larrikith towards the Weyr, he had the spunky green seek out the people he was interested in finding. It was quickly noted that Casa was at the lake bathing her gold, so they headed their first, with B’jin presenting the young goldrider with her gift before excusing himself after polite conversation and moving on to searching for the other past Weyrlings. His son was apparently off doing whatever it was N’mor did when he wasn’t home, so B’jin angled for T’ryn, finding the young man in the dining caverns he approached with a cheerful smile.

“T’ryn! Have a moment?”

T’ryn knew as a bronzerider he could get away with a lot, including lending a hand in menial tasks if he wanted, but it wasn’t something he felt comfortable doing. His mom was a crèche worker and he used to help all the time when he was old enough to take care of the younger ones or to clean up after them and it didn’t feel right to ignore a mess in the dining cavern when he came in between meals either. He’d only gone in to get a cup of tea --something he was in the habit of since having a sore throat some time ago and was told mint tea was great for relieving it—and saw someone earlier must have dropped at least one plate of food so he swiped the broom to tend to that mess and then moved on to washing the tables.

He had just finished making his tea and was trying to wave off the plate of cookies being offered to him as a thank you for his help when he heard his name in a familiar voice. He hesitated a moment, flashing back to younger days when he and N’mor would sneak about stealing scraps of leather or just generally being young boys, and worried he was in trouble. B’jin was not only N’mor’s dad and his own dad’s lover, he was also their Weyrlingmaster—with R’nd sometimes assisting unofficially. It was one of the few things that really made T’ryn realize how small and tight knit a community a Weyr could be.

Shaking off the rush and slight fear of being caught that lingered from the past, T’ryn turned and smiled at B’jin. “Hi! Perfect timing. The staff insisted I take a plate of cookies for helping them and I don’t think I can eat them all,” especially since he wasn’t a huge fan of sweets like his dad was. T’ryn would have been happy with a plate of fruit but the kitchen worker didn’t know his preferences like some of the others and after trying to refuse twice, he politely took the plate with a smile.

He moved to one of the nearby and now sparkling tables to set his mug and plate down, waving B’jin to grab a seat as well. “Are you looking for N’mor? He didn’t say what he was up to today, sorry.”

B’jin smiled warmly as the boy turned to him, cup in one hand and plate in another. The greenrider moved past the young bronzerider, pouring himself a glass of cool fruit juice before making his way over to the table that T’ryn had laid claim to. Sliding into a seat opposite the young man, B’jin took a sip of his juice before snagging a cookie. He let the silence draw out as he took a bite of the sweet treat, savouring the sweetness. Once he’d swallowed, he shook his head slightly in answer to the question that had been asked of him.

“I’m not,” he replied honestly, though he had a piece to give to N’mor, he was as happy to hold onto it until the boy came to see him as he was to hand it over that day. “I was looking for you, actually.” He grinned behind his glass of juice, delaying while he took a sip, so he could watch the play of emotions on the young bronzerider’s face. The boy was growing up, and quite well (he definitely took after his father) but B’jin had always enjoyed teasing N’mor, and he saw no reason to not bestow the treatment upon his best friend. They had been particularly fun to tease during Weyrlinghood, and if either of them thought they would escape now they were big bad bronzeriders, well, more fool them!

Lowering his glass after he took another sip, B’jin set it down on the table and then twisted to reach into his bag, pulling out a roll of parchment with a bronze string around it. He peered into the roll, frowned, and then put it aside and pulled out another one. Glancing down the funnel, he smiled and then handed the rolled up parchment to T’ryn, waiting patiently for his past student to take it. “I have a gift for you!” He grinned, delighting as he waited for the response. “You lot graduated three years ago, and I thought it should be celebrated.”

T’ryn broke one of the cookies in half and set one piece back on the plate and took a bite of the piece that remained. He barely refrained from choking on it when B’jin confessed to finding him for, well, him. “You are?” He all but squeaked out the question as he grabbed for his juice, taking a swig to help wash down the cookie crumbs that seemed intent on sticking in his throat. He didn’t think he had done anything wrong recently and he didn’t think he had forgotten anything—though that was the funny thing about forgetting something; you often didn’t remember until it was pointed out to you.

“Oh. What?” T’ryn had a moment of relief when B’jin said he had a gift for him and then it turned into confusion. It wouldn’t be too odd for the greenrider to give him something since they were practically family and it also wouldn’t have been too odd if R’nd asked B’jin to deliver something if he was already on his way to Ista, though R’nd was very hands on and liked the personal touches. It wasn’t likely B’jin was playing messenger for his dad but that didn’t clear up any mysteries for him either.

When a rolled piece of paper was passed over to him, T’ryn eyed it with a mixture of eager curiosity and suspicion over what it could be. The cookie was quickly set down and forgotten as T’ryn carefully untied the bronze string and unrolled what turned out to be a drawing. He glanced up at B’jin to make sure this was definitely meant for him and then went back to taking in the details. It was a beautiful sketch that showed Syrendryth and him playing at the lake. They were both water babies and enjoyed swimming and splashing around either with just the two of them or in a group of friends. This image caught their activities and personalities so clearly that T’ryn felt like it could have been drawn at the lake in Katila while they played three years ago. Syrendryth had his usual confidence to him and even had a fish in his mouth, something he liked to swoop under water to catch.

“This is amazing. Thank you!” T’ryn smiled brightly at B’jin and fought the urge to run around the table and hug the greenrider. It wouldn’t be proper and he also didn’t think B’jin would like it in general. His gaze returned to the sketch and the smile stayed in place as it conjured up memories of the past, including the first time N’mor had been allowed to go swimming after being deemed healed enough after the amputation to splash around again. It had just been the two of them with B’jin close by but not close enough to be counted as hovering. T’ryn had talked N’mor into going citing that all four of them needed to get out for air and exercise. It had been a fun afternoon and it ended with them oiling the hides of their dragonets, which was the first real task of tending to his dragonet N’mor had been able to do since the landslide.

“I’m going to hang this in my weyr where everyone can see it,” T’ryn didn’t have a lot of visitors just yet, but when he did, he wanted to make sure people saw the thoughtful piece of art. “I can’t believe it’s been three years! Or that you got us something. I bet other Weyrlingmasters don’t think of something like this.” He could think of one or two that might do something kind like this but he couldn’t recall hearing about any that actually did.

“You’re welcome,” B’jin grinned, pleased his gift was so well received. He had gifted the class pieces of art before, but they’d been smaller, and more focused on faces that scenes; he remembered clearly sketching out images of serious faces of weyrling riders as they tried to teach their dragonet something; the fun expressions said dragonets could pull as they attempted things that they now took for granted – like flying solo for the first time, or hunting the small animals that were brought in for them to learn on. Oh, the good old days! B’jin smiled wistfully, and wondered when he’d pick up another class. There had been twelve clutches at Telgar since the abandoning of Katila, but B’jin had not felt drawn to any of them. He decided he would look into one of the upcoming clutches. He missed teaching the young riders all the things they needed to know to become fully-fledged dragonriders.

“That sounds wonderful,” B’jin beamed, delighted. It didn’t matter to him how much traffic T’ryn had in his weyr, or even if he’d wanted to keep it privately hung in his bedroom, the fact that he wanted to hang it up on a wall so he could enjoy it each day was more than B’jin could ask for in a recipient of one of his pieces of art.

B’jin laughed at the comment about the other Weyrlingmasters. “Probably not,” he smiled, “But not everyone can draw,” he smirked, knowing that was not really what T’ryn had meant, and the wink he tossed the young bronzerider acknowledged that. Picking up another cookie, B’jin nibbled on it casually. Being able to supply his own gifts to his past students was something that not everyone could do. Certainly, if one of the other Weyrlingmasters wanted to provide gifts, they’d probably have to purchase them themselves, and considering some of the clutch sizes, that could get very expensive!

“Thank you for sharing the cookies. You should dump what you don’t want on N’mor.” His son had a sweet tooth about as bad as R’nd’s did, though he doubted either of them would ever admit as much. “I had best be on my way. I still have a handful of wayward students to find, including my son.” Smiling again, B’jin finished off his glass of juice, stole another cookie (with another wink) and stood up. He paused for a moment. “I’ll catch you later, T’ryn. Drop by and see your dad sometime.” He considered for a moment. “Check in with our dragons before you drop in,” he teased, smirking wickedly at what the comment would imply to the teenager, and then turned and almost skipped away, his steps light and cheerful.
