Sitting atop Venseth, Indivara took her heavy winter riding helmet off and clipped it to one of the riding straps, puffing out a deep breath as the wind tried to tug apart the tight braid she’d put her hair into before leaving that morning. The cool touch was refreshing, especially where her head was damp from the combination of the confining helmet and her own thick hair. It would dry soon, though, with the way the strong breeze was blowing across the bare hilltops.

Unclipping the straps, the young rider kicked a leg over and slid down the side of her blue dragon, pulling her gloves off as she went and tucking them into her belt. Indivara enjoyed being a full rider, with having graduated the month prior when the group turned one year old. Venseth, presumably at his full length now, was a good size and of a strong, solid build. Big for a blue, the stocky dragon only looked bigger still when compared to the tiny, willowy form of his female rider.

“What do you think, Ven?” Indivara turned around to smile up at her dragon, having been admiring the valley below beforehand, an eyebrow arched upwards and playing on the way her scars were stretched across her face. The wind was making some progress on pulling the braid apart, with the shorter lengths coming free and flying happily into Indivara’s eyes and getting stuck against her lips.

There are not many places to hide, Venseth noted quietly, shifting his head to peer at Indivara curiously out of one slowly swirling eye. Indivara grinned, and nodded her head once in agreement.

“True,” but the location had not been sought out to play games of hide and seek, so the open grass valleys between the hill they were perched on and those that surrounded them was not of any concern to the girl. “Do you think it’s the right one, though?” She turned back to examine the view, her eyebrows furrowed into a frown as she searched for something that could not be seen.

Probably not, the dragon answered honestly, and Indivara frowned even as she sighed in exasperation. Her arms crossed over her chest and Indivara’s expression changed to an irritable glare as she accused the valley silently for not being the one she wanted.

Ever since they’d been allowed to travel between without restrictions, Indivara had started taking off early in the morning with Venseth and occasionally her firelizards, without telling anyone where they were going or what they were doing. If V’ler had figured out what she was doing, her fellow bluerider had never made a comment, and he never tried to stop her when she slipped out of his bed, dressed for riding and took off for another day only to collapse back into the bed just shy of dark without a word. Some days she came back quiet and with a depressed air, seeking silent cuddles; other days she came back snarly and irritable, glaring daggers and sleeping stiffly on her own side of the bed like a ticking time bomb.

She still had no idea why V’ler let her sleep in his bed, but nor did she ever question it, or the fact that she could wrangle affection out of him when she wanted them as easily as she was given those flat, apathetic looks when she was in a snarky, fight seeking mood. Indivara had not seen any of her other friends in weeks (or months?) and while she would have missed them if she had stopped and allowed herself to think about it, she was far too busy with her current mission.

We’ll find it.

“I know.” Indivara let her arms drop and she turned back towards Venseth, pulling her gloves out from her belt as she went with the intention of putting them on and remounting her dragon. Her motion was paused, however, when Venseth’s head shot up and turned to look in the direction Indivara knew Katila was located, albeit not at all closely. “What is-?” Indivara’s confused question fell away to become nothing more than lips pursed into a flat line as she caught sight of a familiar dragon approaching.

“Did you call him?” The angry demand was turned on Venseth with flared nostrils and fire in the girl’s eyes.

No. The blue’s response was quiet, firm and matter of fact.  He had no reason to defend himself when it was something he had not done. Indivara nodded sharply once, and turned her fierce glare on the incoming blue dragon, lips pursed and arms once more crossed angrily. She did not know why she was angry, but she was, and that was all the reason Indivara usually needed, even if Venseth offered a mellow rumble of welcome as his friend landed nearby.

“What do you want?” Indivara’s greeting wasn’t nearly as welcoming.

V’ler didn’t really consider himself a keeper, like R’nya with his Golden Girls, and didn’t think his friends had to ever check in with him before they did anything. It was why he never questioned Indivara when she disappeared for hours at a time or slinked back to his room at night looking either for cuddles or just what had become her half of the bed when she was in a bad mood. It didn’t concern him so he stayed out of it. Her new habit hadn’t even piqued his curiosity until it went on long enough.

Indivara wasn’t really the type to sneak off to be with a secret lover, though it was a possibility given how she loved the way everyone believed she was mated to him, but V’ler didn’t think he’d be interrupting anything when he finally decided to give in. Given the moods Indivara came back in, whatever it was that filled her day wasn’t what she hoped for and V’ler figured part of being a friend was making sure the other person was okay.

It didn’t hurt that a green that was on B’jin’s list of those to avoid was a bit proddy that morning and V’ler had no intentions of hanging around for that flight.

When they finally spotted Venseth’s pretty hide, V’ler wasn’t really sure what he expected to find. It was obvious Indivara left the Weyr but he wasn’t sure why or where she would go. He supposed he expected to find her at some secret body of water or a quiet cave filled with gems that the Holds and Halls would die to have their hands on. Seeing her overlooking a valley left him more confused than when he started but finding her was all about getting answers so it didn’t really bother him.

“Someone has to make sure you’re staying out of trouble,” V’ler replied easily to the growled question after Veeth landed. He took his time dismounting and removing his riding jacket, not at all worried about what Indivara was thinking or considering doing.

Veeth, however, gave all of his attention to the girl after greeting his friend. Hello, love! Your hair is so pretty when you wear it like that. You’re very talented. V’ler, with his back momentarily to Indivara, rolled his eyes at his dragon’s never-ending attempts to flirt with every female dragon and human he came across. Turning back around, V’ler leaned back against Veeth’s side and crossed his arms lightly over his chest as he watched the other blue pair, trying to figure out more about what was going on with Indivara.

Indivara answered V’ler’s casual reply with a dirty look before turning all her attention purposefully upon Veeth as he greeted her, a genuine smile on her lips for the sweet blue. The fact that she did not believe a word of the compliment was completely irrelevant, and Indivara had long since trying to get Veeth to quit giving her compliments or to impress upon him the fact that she was, frankly, incapable of taking the words as truth. In the end, she had given up, accepting that, if nothing else, saying such things made Veeth happy and he was a sweet dragon that deserved all the happiness he could find – especially since he had been queer enough to Impress to V’ler!

A sly smirk twisted her lips at that thought, and behind her, Venseth dramatically and with great show, his eyes flashing amusement and exasperation both, but he nudged the girl affectionately in the back when she turned to him and slapped playfully at his nose, a gentle rumble more of a purr vibrating through the young blue dragon’s chest. What does that say of me, dearest? Indivara just tossed the dragon a wink.

“I thought that was Ven’s job,” Indivara drawled, moving closer to V’ler so she could lean against Veeth’s neck, lifting her eyebrows expectantly at her companion. Indeed, Venseth had been a major factor in, if not cooling Indivara’s rather spitfire personality, at least re-routing it to areas that were somewhat more constructive. Rumbling a soft laugh at the comment, Venseth shifted around so he could flop down beside Veeth, cuddling up to his friend comfortably and with little regard for whether or not the pair of humans intended for a lengthy visiting session.

It is one I take very seriously, Venseth inserted cheerfully, lifting his head so he could see both human’s from where he was on the other side of Veeth. We are not causing any trouble. His eye focused more solidly on V’ler. Did you truly think we were? He was quite sure it was an excuse, but he could feel Indivara’s vague irritation at being accused of something she hadn’t and wasn’t doing just under the surface. Better to burst that brewing storm before it got too big!

“I know you weren’t, Venseth,” V’ler replied, catching the blue’s gaze to show he spoke in truth and then turned a little grin on Indivara. “But you can never truly tell with this one.” While he wouldn’t say he knew her inside and out, V’ler knew he could claim he was beginning to and that Indivara had grown considerably from the early days of their introduction. She wasn’t climbing trees to throw sticks and stones at him anymore so that alone told the bluerider the girl wasn’t quite as bad as she was.

Indivara also wasn’t picking as many fights with other ‘Northerners’ as she once had and as far as V’ler knew, no one else was sporting a broken nose because of her fist. Still, she was secretive, never having been one to talk about herself or what she wanted or dreamed about. That was the real reason why he was there. He had left her alone long enough in the hopes Indivara would find what she was looking for but with the type of moods she could come home in, it didn’t seem like that had happened. So it was time to see if he could be a supportive friend again and offer a hand.

“Figured you could use a partner in crime in case you were up to something,” V’ler spoke casually, as if it was something he offered up all the time while he rubbed at an ink stain on the side of a finger. He was usually a tidy writer but there were times when he was wrapped up in a song that he smudged a line that hadn’t fully dried or left droplets of ink that his hand found when he brushed something aside. Early that morning had been one of those times as he frantically wrote out a melody that had been haunting his dreams. The music was now securely embedded in the sheets of paper but it was also on his skin, the quick scrubbing with soap not having done much.

Oh, I like when you play together. You are good partners as well. What are you two going to do, Indivara? Veeth’s innocence never ceased to amuse V’ler and he smirked at his dragon’s phrasing that he knew wasn’t riddled with the double entendre that he still heard anyway.

Indivara scrunched her face up at V’ler’s light teasing, not bothering to respond beyond the snide motion. One hand played absently with a loose strand of hair, tugging on it lightly as she turned her gaze back out to look over the view below them. “We’re not up to anything,” her voice was more tired than snide, and Indivara shrugged one shoulder.

We’re searching, the young blue chipped in, filling the awkward silence Indivara had fallen into after Veeth spoke in his light, lilting voice, Venseth entirely missing the innuendo that Indivara pursed her lips at. When Indivara didn’t jump down his throat for speaking up, Venseth continued. Indivara wants to find her birth place!

Indivara shifted, standing up and patting Venseth’s shoulder as she moved away, walking towards the horizon she was so intently searching with her gaze. The intense expression turned on V’ler after a few more moments of silence. “I can’t remember where we lived,” her lower lip quivered before she pursed them into a tight, flat line, eyebrows knitted. She didn’t know how to explain why it had suddenly become so important to find the place she’d been born and lived for the first part of her life before Katila was founded. She’d just woken up one day, and had the need of it eating away at her.

“It’s stupidly useless.” How she was supposed to find something she’d not been old enough to remember was beyond her, and Indivara let her legs collapse under her and sat down with a grunt on the ground, crossing her legs at the ankle and hugging her knees to her chest.

No its not, Indivara. I’m sure we’ll find it! V’ler and Veeth will help us! The young blue looked imploringly at their companions, eyes distressed.

V’ler simply stared at the pair, trying to sort out if they were serious. When the lower lip quivered with the confession from Indivara, he knew that they were speaking the truth, though why he even thought for a moment that Venseth would lie was beyond him. He was about to comment on the fact that Indivara wouldn’t have been old enough to remember where they lived to begin with when the girl was suddenly sitting on the ground hugging her knees. What did he get himself into this time?

With a sigh, V’ler sat down beside the girl and stared out into the distance. They would never find the site that Indivara could technically call her first home. It was a large island when faced with such a task and he suspected that not even the twins, who would have likely been old enough, or even R’nd, could find their way back to their exiled homes. He knew some of the dragonriders could remember and even went back after the boundaries were lifted, but most didn’t want to remember and certainly weren’t driving themselves crazy searching for it.

Family, Veeth’s already soft voice was even quieter as he spoke only to V’ler, the bluerider quirking a brow as he glanced to the pale blue dragon. I think she’s lonely and… maybe… looking for that piece of herself that’s missing. V’ler was close to writing off his dragon’s idea but paused to consider it a bit first. Indivara’s family had died in the landslide and while she didn’t seem overly close to her mother, it did make a bit of sense to want to find a small connection to them again and see where her roots were, so to speak. It also could explain why it upset her so much not to be able to find it. Her mother would have known and not many more, meaning the location and memories died with her.

“I bet it was an area with trees that had low branches for you to climb on given your affinity for them,” one of their more memorable encounters happened shortly after his arrival at Katila where the feisty young woman sat in a tree and threw sticks at him; until she lost her balance and fell to the ground. “And near fresh water because of your love of bathing. If we look for streams or hot springs, I think we’ll be on the right path.”

It wasn’t much to go on but it was something and V’ler hoped it would help lift Indivara’s spirits a bit.

Indivara glanced sideways when V’ler joined her on the ground, but otherwise made no acknowledgement to his presence. She wasn’t sure why she’d spoken, or allowed Venseth to speak up, about what they were up to. It wasn’t any of V’ler’s business, and she wasn’t nearly as confident as her dragon appeared to be that they would be able to offer any help towards searching out the lost piece of her past. As such, she was surprised when V’ler finally spoke, so much so that she jumped slightly and turned to blink at him.

“Maybe,” a smile might have wormed itself onto her lips at another time, with the memory of their first meeting swamping her mind and Venseth’s exasperated amusement that that was how his human would seek to introduce herself to someone, even if it were years gone past. That is so very you. The quirks of his young bonded wouldn’t never cease to amaze him.

Waterway! We didn’t try that yet! The pretty dragon bounced slightly on the spot as he pranced over, giving Indivara’s back a nudge with his nose and blowing warm air on her face when she tilted her head to look up at him. You’re forever in the water! Relief washed over Venseth as Indivara finally perked up, smiling a little, though the expression was distracted.

“Mother loved the water. Her and her green.” Now that V’ler had mentioned it, Indivara had trouble figuring out why she hadn’t started her searching along rivers and waterways! Leaning over, she kissed him lightly on the cheek, and then punched him in the shoulder as she stood up, aiming a light kick at his thigh as she did so. “Smart arse.” With a bounce in her step, Indivara hugged Venseth’s nose before scrambling up onto his back and strapping herself in.

“Where do you think we should start?” A pointed look was levelled on V’ler, blue eyes intense and expectant. If he was going to be a smarty pants, he could come up with their next search location! It would be nice to blame someone other than herself for continual failure at finding the location (she ignored Venseth’s exasperated sigh). At the very least, V’ler could find them a nice place to bathe the dragons. “Well?”

V’ler smirked at the random actions he was given, not at all mad at the punch or kick since they were both light and done playfully. Indivara spent far too much time invading and taking over his space for him to not know her moods and when he was in the clear or about to end up with a nasty bruise. Now, however, he had to figure out where to lead the search that he still wasn’t entirely confident in either. In truth, he wasn’t sure what they would find and what he wanted them to find. Perhaps the remnants of a site would be located but it’d be hard to say who it belonged to unless they carved their names in a tree or left some telling mark. What would Indivara’s reaction be to anything they did or didn’t find?

Given her mom was greenrider, V’ler suspected she wouldn’t have been able to claim a prime location for the exiled home but forced to look further in and perhaps facing the west to have the sunset and not sunrise to work with. It wasn’t much to go on – nothing for this hunt was – but it was a good enough hunch, especially when coupled with the waterways theory. “That way,” he pointed west and towards a general area that seemed as good as any.

I don’t know why you want people to think you’re prickly and mean. You’re so kind! V’ler snorted at Veeth, giving the dragon an amused glance. I am mean. I speak truths no one wants to hear and ignore people that are a waste of my time. Just sometimes I find one or two that aren’t and can handle what they hear.

Mounting back up, V’ler patted his sweet dragon on the neck and still wondered how they ended up together. They could be so different yet somehow got along so well. You do that with a lot of people, V’ler ignored what was close to becoming a pep talk and turned his attentions back to the search at hand, encouraging Veeth to take off. “There’s more than enough of the day left for us to do a fair bit of exploring.”
