Rhaedalyn had become more withdrawn again since the break-up with Z’ia and was glad Aradissicath was on the Sands since that gave her an excuse to avoid being around other people for any longer than needed. She essentially went to her room to sleep – poorly lately thanks to her growing belly but she didn’t want to be known as a complainer on top of every other rumour and never said a word about it – then went to grab an early breakfast before most of the residents were awake and spent the rest of the day with her dragon.

She was just coming from gathering up her breakfast when Aradissicath’s mood shift hit her. Are you all right, Dissi? Rhaedalyn waited through the silence that followed until the reply came just as a nearby dragon started to hum. They move.

Rhaedalyn grinned and picked up her pace back to the Sands. Hatchings were always a mixed bag of emotions for her and Aradissicath but for the moment, she was excited. Who knew how the babies would behave when they came out of their shells and who knew who they would Impress but it was still wonderful to see more dragons entering the world regardless. It was hard on Aradissicath though since the gold liked being alone on the Sands where they could chat and share stories of fantasy and romance without being disturbed. To have her eggs hatch meant they no longer had a reason to hide away from everyone. But Rhaedalyn also knew Aradissicath longed to stretch her wings properly and soar freely once more or lounge on a cliff as she watched the bronze dragons hunt. She was a very proper gold but she had very simple needs as well.

The trail of firelizards following behind her were given instructions to fetch those of import. R’nya, of course, would know through Xyreith but Whisper was still sent to make sure he had his butt in gear and joined them. Rumour and Muffin were sent to find S’kef and K’ton to alert them of the Hatching as well. It wouldn’t do to forget to tell the Weyrleader and second! They would also have time to spread the word to Telgar Weyr and gather those from the Holds that showed renewed interest in them. She may have been seen as ditzy and just a girl but Rhaedalyn listened well enough and could pick up on the basics of the politics that were happening.

She set her meal down on the little blanket that was her second home for the last little while before wrapping her arms around Aradissicath’s neck to watch the rocking eggs together. “Our second Hatching, Dissi. You’re so wonderful! What colours do you think they hold? What colour will be first?” Aradissicath chuckled at her enthusiasm, too pleased with the girl’s uplifted spirits to interrupt the babbling with answers.

Yay, Hatching! Everyone knows the rules, but the basics: All Candidates are accounted for by the time the first shell cracks so don't freak out if you didn't get your character there in time and all Candidates are in their robe with shoes on because burning feet suck. Don't forget your LPCs and Trophy Candidates are more than welcome to make appearances and Impress! If you want a certain eggie (based on description alone) for a character or a certain colour, PM me and I'll write in an Impression! :D Nothing is concrete with this Hatching.

Like most sane people, Siandrian was asleep when the humming began. From what he could tell, the eggs were only just starting to move and it wasn’t too urgent that he get there. Still, that didn’t mean he could easily fall back asleep. He was awake now and the dragons humming, while it was rather monotone and he could get used to it soon enough, was making it difficult to even pretend he could grab another half hour of sleep. So he dressed for the Hatching and went to get breakfast to help pass the time as well as prepare him in case they were in for a long wait. Nothing sucked quite as much as standing around bored and hungry on the Sands as eggs rocked and dragonets dithered on whether they wanted to show up to the party or not.

With a cup of klah in hand, Siandrian finally arrived though he didn’t dare enter the Sands with the drink. It was, of course, okay for the goldrider to eat near the precious eggs and cranky dragon but no one wanted to risk upsetting Aradissicath by doing anything she could deem irresponsible around the eggs. So he stood off to the side, easily in sight of the Weyrlingmaster and where he could keep an eye on the eggs and his fellow Candidates. Some of them looked rather ragged, likely from lack of sleep, and others looked terrified. Good, Siandrian thought as he watched one boy in particular that was rather new to Katila and looked ready to faint. Everyone had sugar-coated what Hatchings were like except for Indivara. That girl’s face was enough to scare anyone but then she had to share her stories. He was surprised no one burst into tears and begged to go home.

Maybe next time.

Breathing helps. In and out. In and out. Despite the mental pep talk and instructions on how to breathe, Ristandal still felt light headed and anxiety building. He was walking to another Hatching though it felt more like marching to his execution. He had Stood for and failed at several hatchings over the last two turns and he had it in his head that today would be no different from the others. He still clung to the belief that he wasn’t as pathetic as the twins, R’vi in particular since he had Impressed long after his brother, still, it was hard. His father was an amazing bronzerider and he was currently nothing more than a ‘brat that should have Impressed the moment he was able to Stand. N’mor and T’ryn Impressed on their first try! Ristandal sighed and continued his feet dragging to the Sands.

He hadn’t eaten anything before hand, finding his stomach far too tender for anything more than half a cup of water. Of course, now that he was amongst his peers and watching the eggs shake with excited dragonets ready to burst free, Ristandal felt and heard his stomach give a rumble. He’d be embarrassed over the noise if he wasn’t still worried about what people were thinking about him and his chance of Impressing.

He spotted his mother sitting with a couple of her friends and he gave a weak wave to her. His father was sought out a moment later and Ristandal heaved another sigh as he saw M’ris, looking so suave even with ruffled morning hair and casual attire. His father smiled at him and Ristandal did his best to smile back without looking like he was afraid or ready to throw up.

Ranedaren was usually the calm one of the group but Hatchings always brought out the nervous young boy in him. Would he Impress? What would he Impress? Would he be happy? Would his dad be happy? There were so many questions and he didn’t have any answers to them. That normally wouldn’t bother him as whatever happened would happen whether he was prepared or not but Hatchings were different; special.

Of course, there was nothing to do but wait through the event and hope for the best; even if he didn’t exactly know what he was hoping for or what qualified as the best. That was the mantra of the morning as he sat through breakfast, doing his best to act and feel normal by chatting with friends and eating some of his favourite morning treats. It was going well until his dad showed up, clapping him on the shoulder to ask how he was doing and if he was ready. R’jit was amazing and that was the problem. He wanted to make his dad proud and Impress blue like him but what if he wasn’t as amazing a bluerider?

They walked to the Hatching Circuit together and R’jit wished him luck as they parted ways – one to the viewing area and the other to the hot sands to stand around on. Ranedaren waved to one of the boys that seemed so shy and timid but was pretty decent when he didn’t seem afraid to show his personality. It helped to see some of the fear and nerves showing on other faces around the group of boys since it meant it was natural and he wasn’t alone but Ranedaren did his best to smile and seem casual about the whole affair in an effort to pass on the vibe to the others. That’s what he was known for so that was what he’d try to be even as he threw a glance towards the eggs that held his impending fate.

R’nya looked up from the cup of Klah he was sipping as he went over his notes on the last wing practice, and the general paperwork associated with running the Weyr. The bronzerider knew he was Weyrleader in everything but name and he did not like it. However, on the same token, R’nya knew it was also a matter of doing something yourself, if you want it done right, and he wanted it done right!

Flicking through the papers, R’nya raised an eyebrow as the little gold firelizard landed on his table and waited for her to inform him of why it was she was visiting. Reaching out, he retrieved a sheet before she could stand on it and smear the carefully written and still wet ink with her little feet. While the little critter did not seem particularly keen on actually telling him what was going on – opting to simply stare at him with one eye and her head titled – Xyreith decided to rumble softly and put his eye to the window closest to R’nya. The babies begin, he informed cheerfully, blinking before removing his head and trotting off towards the Hatching grounds, leaving his rider to tidy up and make his way over on his own.

R’nya did not bother to rush too much, patting Whisper on the head lightly and watched as she took to the air and winked between, presumably to where Rhaedalyn was undoubtedly with Aradissicath. Setting his work to one side in a neat pile, R’nya placed a clean, water-polished rock on top of them to hold them in place and moved to his room to find some appropriate clothing before making his way to the bathing pools. Dragonets were never overly enthusiastic about leaving their shells, and so R’nya was not in any huge hurry to get himself from home to hot sands. Besides, a bath was called for and he did not fancy greeting his dragon’s offspring whilst smelly.

Running his fingers through towel-dried hair, R’nya made his way around the edge of the gathering numbers of people to where Aradissicath was clearly visible. Pale eyes searched out Rhaedalyn and his eyes brightened in a smile that did not show on his lips as he spotted the young woman. Making his way to Rhaedalyn – with appropriate pauses along the way to return greetings and offer acknowledgement of comments – R’nya reached the young woman as the eggs finally seemed to start putting some determination into their march for freedom. His hand reached out to rest lightly on the small of Rhaedalyn’s back, far more hovering, and he leaned over to place a chaste kiss on her cheek. “You look wonderful, my dear,” was murmured softly.

Stepping back lightly and allowing them both their own personal space once more, the bronzerider folded his hands together behind his back and surveyed the eggs before shifting his attention back to the gathering individuals. He could spot several of those from various ranks within the Telgar Hold boundaries, as well as what was clearly the wide-eyed parents of the peasants that had been Searched for the last few clutches, the present included. He was hopefully the dragonriders would behave themselves… However, R’nya would avoid holding his breath on that one; he was not stupid.

As he looked around, pale eyes alighted on Quilriana and her children, and R’nya’s expression both relaxed and brightened, the bronzerider waving in a quiet, somewhat shy way when the little girl spotted him and waved enthusiastically at him with a big grin. He could see the bright yellow ribbons in her hair he’d bought her as a little Hatching Invitation Gift when he last visited Quilriana; the little boy had the bronze firelizard-dragon toy he’d managed to find. While the bronzerider was not sure he ever would have met the children if they had not come barging in to the tavern one evening while he was pretending to drink while chatting to Quilriana as she worked, he wasn’t completely adverse to them either. However, he was quite sure Quilriana found his timidity around her children amusing.

Xyreith’s sudden rumble of approval from beside Aradissicath broke up the sound of humming, and R’nya’s gaze shot back to the eggs, rocking forward slightly onto the balls of his feet in anticipation as the first dragonet Hatched.

V’ler was in his usual spot atop Veeth with the usual suspects surrounding them. He still didn’t know why he seemed to have his own rag tag group of friends but it made Veeth happy to have so many people they liked around, especially during Hatchings where they could watch the dragonets enter the world.

It was early when the humming began and it was surprisingly still somewhat early when the cracking on several eggs caught everyone’s attention. V’ler estimated just over two hours had passed from when the call went out and noted it was one of the shorter wait times they had to endure. Other things he noted that were a tad more interesting was the way R’nya so politely greeted Rhaedalyn who seemed to blush and look embarrassed by the attention before quickly busying herself with Aradissicath. That was probably a good thing since R’nya seemed to catch the eye of a woman and her children – the daughter extremely excited to see the bronzerider. The kids weren’t the right age to be R’nya’s though since they were clearly from the North and not Katilan. Maybe he’d look into that a bit more later.

His attention was finally properly grabbed when the eggs started shaking more violently with one giving its all to be the first on the scene. V’ler readied his writing tools, doing his best to block out the fact that there was a Harper from the Hall there to record the event as well. Not everyone was happy the dragons were back but Harpers couldn’t deny the itch to log everything significant and despite being there himself, V’ler knew his written word currently wasn’t entirely official anymore.

And with that thought, the first dragonet shattered the last bits of its shell and stumbled into freedom. Vengeance made one sweeping glance around the gathered crowd of boys and, with his nose snootily pointed in the air, gave a wobbly strut over to his mate. The young dragonet gave a solid head butt to the boy beside his chosen to get him out of the way and then gave a lighter one to his leg as well to make sure he had the boy’s attention before introductions were given.

Sloth and Charity were quick to follow their brother’s example and bits of shell soon started falling away until a snout or foot would peek through before darting back inside as if the air was much too cold for their liking. Or, in the case of Sloth, to get a better angle on the attack against the shell. Finally, a hole large enough for two feet to fit through was created but that seemed to be as far as the dragonet was willing to go as the egg fell over and the two little feet dangled in the air. V’ler heard some laughter from the crowd but he watched intently, willing the little one to put a little more effort into the fight to find freedom.

Whether it was his powerful thoughts or the dragonet simply wasn’t comfortable didn’t matter as Sloth finally broke free thanks to rolling again and bouncing off of Sweetness. The blue shook his head to clear it and then promptly laid down where he was, surrounded by shell bits. A little mewl of longing was given as his head lifted enough to seek out his bonded and it was enough as a boy gasped and stepped forward before stopping. V’ler was close to rolling his eyes at the kid that seemed about seven variations of shocked but finally the ‘brat moved forward to help collect the lazy blue dragonet that already seemed ready for bed.

As Sloth and his bonded shuffled off, Charity made her appearance. She took a moment to nudge her head against several other eggs as she passed them, hoping to help them break free as well. Finally, after winding her way free from her struggling siblings, Charity greeted the young boy she bonded to with a chirp and they made their way to the feeding buckets as well.

Thanks to Charity’s assistance, it wasn’t long before two more dragonets found their way out of the shells to join her. Sweetness and Sensual stumbled free, hitting their heads on each other in the process thanks to their close proximity. After examining one another for a moment, they chirped and bounded off in opposite directions to find their bonded. V’ler frowned as he did his best to watch them both but was happy to see that neither had any run-ins that were noteworthy. So far, the Hatching was off to a rather tame start and he hoped it stayed that way.

When Patience finally popped his head free of the egg and wriggled the rest of the way out, it had been nearly thirty minutes since anything more than shaking and random bits of shell falling free from other eggs. Time didn’t seem to matter to the blue dragonet, however, as he glanced around, taking in all the sights that were new to him before finally moving along to where his mate stood. Intrigued by the confused expression on the boy’s face, Patience sat down before him and simply stared back at him. They could do that all morning if need be.

Much like the blue that was having a staring contest with the disbelieving boy, Lazy didn’t feel much like moving either once she fell out of her shell. She didn’t like being covered in clinging sand but getting it off seemed like an awful lot of work after getting out of the shell! She attempted the same method as her brother, whining where she lay until someone came to rescue her but it seemed her bonded was timid and didn’t want to draw attention to himself. So she got up and the Impression was made, both seeming far happier once the sand started to be brushed off.

Kindness and Sexual were freedom twins as well as they both broke free and stumbled to find their footing. V’ler held his breath for a moment as the two greens stopped and stared at each other. It seemed like they were tensing to fight but Kindness turned away and began making her way across the Sands to her bonded, leaving Sexual to either stand there alone or do the same. Moments later and both girls had successfully found their lifemates without incident.

V’ler was still jotting down the honorifics of the new green weyrlings when another egg gave a final rattle that sent pieces of shell breaking away until a bronze was left shivering and with a piece of the shell still on his head. A boy laughed at the sight and Modesty looked around, confused, until he realized he was the object of amusement. The bronze was a bit upset and gave a creel of discomfort that quickly turned into a squeal of shock as his bonded stepped forward to punch the laughing boy for being so rude before quietly removing the shell from Modesty’s head.

Despite someone currently bleeding, V’ler still had to say this Hatching was going rather well. At least it wasn’t a dragonet that had actually done the damage. Still, a glance was given to Indivara and R’vi to see how they were handling another bronze being indirectly the reason for the violence.

Oslanis was awake, well mostly awake. He couldn't really claim to be fully awake until he'd downed his first mug of klah. He'd begun the morning by untangling himself from his bedmate as the first light of dawn started to clear the horizon. He had taken full advantage of the relax nature of the Weyr and spent more time in the beds of others than he did his own. He wandered into the dining hall barefoot as usual and poured himself a steaming mug of klah before finding an empty seat to finish waking up in.

The klah warmed his belly and stirred the rest of his senses so that by the time he'd reached the bottom he was happily chatting with his table mates. The humming began half way through his second mug of klah and a bowl of porridge. Oslanis bounced to his feet with an excited grin, waving farewell as he jagged back to his room to change. He felt more excited and eager than nervous. The pressure to impress a dragon didn't weigh that heavily on him, thanks in part to his take life as it comes attitude.

He joined the loose circle of candidates already beginning to close in around the clutch. From the last hatching he knew patience was a necessity and occupied his mind with trying to guess which of the eggs might hatch first. He felt better prepared this time, at least compared to some of the wide eyed Northern candidates who were standing on the sands for the first time. He was aware of how unpredictable hatchlings could be and hoped for a less violent hatching than the last one had been.

Oslanis' patience was rewarded sooner than expected as the first eggs began to crack. A decisive Brown hatched first and Lan gave a shallow gasp as he head butted another candidate before impressing. No real damage had been done and he began to relax as Blues and Greens broke their shells and found or were found by their lifemates. He couldn't help but grin at the antics of a few of them who seemed less inclined to haste. He chuckled outright at the Bronze with a bit of shell stuck to his head. He quickly suppressed his amusement though when the hatchling's rider punched another candidate for finding the Bronze's predicament amusing. He looked away, focusing on the eggs still left to hatch.

B’jin was not a morning person, not of his own accord at any rate. A rather heated dream, however, had the greenrider rousing his lover with gentle kisses until R’nd was conscious enough to understand the sad, puppy dog look on B’jin’s face as his fingers ran down the length of the bluerider’s chest, pausing at his belly button while B’jin waited patiently for his lover to react. The pouty expression faded instantly when the look on R’nd’s face altered. B’jin thoroughly enjoyed the rest of their morning, until the dragons started humming; by then though he was not overly put out by being interrupted.

The greenrider’s peaceful expression lit up when the humming was acknowledged, with the man sitting up slightly on one elbow, extracting himself delicately from the casual hold R’nd had around him. “Hatching day,” he murmured, smiling as he placed a light kiss on his lover’s lips. Then B’jin frowned grumpily, head tilted slightly to one side as he conversed with Larrikith. “And greenriders are on taxi duty.” It was not actually a lie; R’nya had just had Xyreith issue orders that unoccupied greenriders flitter up to the North to pick up anyone interested in attending the Hatching. Mostly, however, it was a convenient cover for a decision B’jin had come to a few weeks prior – he was going to pick up R’nd’s most lovely sister and have her attend. The surprise would do R’nd well, and it would allow Eridella the perfect opportunity to nose around her little brother’s current life and home. B’jin was beyond excited at the prospect. The hardest part was keeping it to himself!

Rolling almost literally out of bed, B’jin fluttered around the room as he found appropriate clothing for a trip North, that he could wear Katilan-appropriate clothing underneath for when he got back, without having to nip back to get changed. Once dressed, he leaned over the still addled looking R’nd and kissed him soundly. “Back soon!” And, to give R’nd something to think about while he was gone that would, surely, keep his mind off what B’jin might be up to: “Love you.” Smiling warmly, B’jin ducked out the door and had Larrikith quickly in her flying straps. The pair vanished a few moments later.

B’jin’s eyes were still sparkling with private mirth as he nodded approval at Eridella’s choice in clothing; heavy outerwear for the trip and much lighter more summer-ish clothing for when they arrived at Katila. While it was heading steadily towards winter at Katila, it was still a long way from cold. Assisting his lovely companion aboard Larrikith, B’jin laughed happily and reassured her that there was absolutely no way under the radiant sun that R’nd would expect him to rock up with her aboard the little green dragon. The little quip that he didn’t think R’nd was presently capable of thinking at all was not explained, but his expression was delightfully mischievous.

“Welcome to Katila!” Larrikith did lazy swirls through the air, following the other gliding dragons towards the Hatching Sands with the long scenic tour that was popular upon first visiting the southern based Weyr. The milling of so many people delighted B’jin; with most the Weyr in Telgar the place seemed so empty! But the fact that the majority of the milling people were Northerners that had only seen dragons probably three times in their life – if that – was delightful! It was the way Weyrs were supposed to look on a Hatching Day, and B’jin was glad Katila was finally acting like a true Weyr, and less like a lost treasure hidden from everyone and everything.

Larrikith landed them outside the main entrance, and B’jin helped Eridella off, taking her jacket politely before climbing a little up Larrikith to lay it across her neck, in the spot his guitar usually took up residency. Returning to the ground, B’jin offered his companion his arm, before leading her cheerfully inside. Larrikith cleared a path behind them as she followed, giving Ayyonth the heads up that they were coming in as she requested his location. The information was passed onto B’jin, who lead Eridella unerringly to where her brother was unknowingly waiting.

They arrived just in time to settle themselves in before the first eggs began to Hatch.

Ranedaren smiled as the first Impression was made. No matter his own nerves, it was always good to see dragonets finding who they were supposed to be with. Growing up in a Weyr ensured he never wanted to see harm come to a dragon, even if some of their riders were complete jerks. So it was a bit of a surprise when the blue that hatched next didn’t seem intent on going to find his bonded. Ranedaren was a bit worried that the blue would between at any moment but it gave a soft cry instead, clearly hoping the boy he was meant for would come to him.

He gasped when something shifted within him and he took a step forward. The blue was calling to him. Kadaisicalth needed him to come collect him. Ranedaren’s eyes went wide as he realised he knew the dragonet’s name and felt how suddenly hungry he was despite his nerves keeping him from wanting to eat anything not too long ago. He was still in shock but with every step that brought him to the dragonet, a goofy grin slowly spread over lips. He had Impressed!

“Hi,” Ranedaren greeted the little blue and brushed a bit of sand off his nose. Kadaisicalth got to his feet and gave a chirp of approval and Ranedaren could do nothing more than smile brightly. He finally glanced up to the crowd and found his dad smiling as well and looking proud as he clapped hands and backs with some of his friends, including R’nd who looked just as thrilled as R’jit. That made it all worth it. Ranedaren was still a bit worried he wouldn’t live up to the standards those two set for being a wonderful bluerider but so far, he was pretty happy with where he was.

The new pair slowly shuffled over to the side where buckets of food were waiting but stopped long enough to tell the Weyrlingmaster their names. Still far too happy that he bonded to find any objections with the honorific or to even roll it around on his tongue and find it amazing, Ranedaren simply repeated what his quiet dragonet had told him on the walk before going to eat.

“R’dare of blue Kadaisicalth.”

Siandrian was growing bored with the Hatching that had started out at a decent enough pace but had now grinded to a halt. Why couldn’t they all hatch at once? It’d be kind of cool to see a flurry of activity with dragonets rushing every which way to find their bonded. Instead, they were left standing around watching eggs wiggle but do nothing else. When another blue finally broke free and headed toward him, Siandrian cocked his head to the side and cautiously watched it, wondering which boy near him was meant for him.

When the blue sat down in front of him and simply stared at him, Siandrian shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other for a moment and his cautious expression turned to one of confusion. “No,” he finally spoke, not at all impressed with the idea of, well, Impressing a blue. He was bound for greater things, like a bronze, not a blue like his absentee father. This dragonet even had the icy shades of Zeianth. It was so many levels of wrong.

“Go away, Equinnyth. We’re not meant for each other.” His voice was firm but once the words were out of his mouth, Siandrian’s eyes widened and he cursed under his breath. He knew the dragonet’s name! Despite his opinion that he wasn’t meant for a blue, there was already a fondness there for the dragonet still staring at him.

“Fine; whatever. Let’s go,” with that, Siandrian gave in, a small smile trying to tug at his lips as the new blue pair walked to the feeding area. Like those before him, he stopped to give their names, patting his dragonet on his head as he did so.

“S’dri of blue Equinnyth.” If he was going to be a bluerider, at least he had an awesome name to go with it. Although, Equinnyth did sound kind of girly.

R’nd was never a morning person but when he woke up to a frisky B’jin, he didn’t mind them nearly as much. He was still enjoying his time when the humming began and pouted at the interruption and B’jin pointing out he was on taxi duty for all those in the North that wanted to come. He knew it was beneficial for strengthening the bonds between Hold and Weyr but that didn’t mean R’nd had to be happy about suddenly being left alone in a cozy bed that had been doing a wonderful job as acting as a playground for them.

When he finally got around to moving, cleaning himself up, and having a second cup of klah, R’nd found his way to the Sands, parking himself close to R’jit. His friend – not to mention mentor and Searchrider – had his oldest son Standing again and R’nd wanted to be close by in case the Impression happened this time. Ranedaren was a good kid, though he always seemed so tense at Hatchings. R’nd had no idea what went through the boy’s head since he always shrugged off any questions and concerns.

Just before the first egg hatched, B’jin showed up. R’nd smiled at his lover and then gawked as his gaze shifted to the woman on B’jin’s arm. “Rell!” He hadn’t been expecting his sister. He knew she wanted to see a Hatching but R’nd didn’t think she’d want to come to Katila to see one. Telgar was far more impressive since it was of a sturdier and more permanent design and he hadn’t thought to bring her South. B’jin clearly had and while he still greeted his sister with an enthusiastic hug before she went over and greeted R’jit as well, R’nd’s mind was suddenly spinning with panic. Was his room clean? Did it look like he had had sex that morning? What would the Katilans act like after this Hatching? He was beginning to stress out and wondering if he could slip away unnoticed to make sure everything was perfect for her surprise arrival when whisperings around him made him take note of the eggs.

The first dragonet of the clutch appeared and all other thoughts and fears drifted away for the time being as guided his sister to stand beside him so he could point out little details if the need arose. The first Impression was one R’nd was suddenly glad he hadn’t missed, though it was pretty close to happening. The brown, perhaps a bit temperamental, made his way over to a boy he had Searched. R’nd let out a cheer and was still grinning proudly as the brown pair walked off.

As he explained to Eridella why he was so excited, the second egg cracked open and a blue lay there, looking a bit distressed. R’nd held his breath, wondering what would happen and then gasped when Ranedaren was the boy that came forward. When it was clear they Impressed, R’nd cheered again and hugged R’jit, congratulating him for his son Impressing. R’nd wanted to go congratulate both boys but he knew how hungry and tired the dragonets would be and also didn’t want to crowd the area while the eggs continued hatching. He’d have time later to congratulate the boys and meet their dragonets.

The Hatching was off to a brilliant start!

Maddox’s limber build was slumped as he quietly entered the Hatching grounds, following behind the other candidates without any push or shove, dark brown eyes flickering in all directions; a particular characteristic of the timid, wary young man. He cringed subtly as his gaze found the form of mother and father, watching on excitedly. Maddox had not managed to Impress at the prior hatching he had attended, but neither had his parents been present. He had had much more fun during those (meaning he had been unobserved and left alone). No matter what happened on the sands now, Maddox had no doubt that it would not be good enough.

With slumped shoulders, Maddox shuffled into the semi-circle that formed loosely around the eggs, his gaze far more on the sand at his feet and the way the grains were stuck to his boots than the eggs. His father would undoubtedly scold him for not even trying, but Maddox simply could not it in himself to try; he would be a disappointment enough as it was. There was no point in making it worse by actually trying. He had learned that lesson long ago and it had been one Maddox took to heart.

Maddox looked up with a worried frown as the Weyrlingmaster walked past him, hissing under his breath about Maddox’s shoulder length hair not being tied back, and handed him a leather to secure it with. Sighing softly, the candidate set about restraining his hair, once more staring at the sand as someone off to his left sniggered. Maddox looked up with surprise when the sniggering was changed to a surprised yelp, and watched with a sad twist to his lips as the bully apparently Impressed to a brown. That would be just his luck, of course, but at least it was not a bronze…

A stumbling step backwards was taken when the dragonet came towards him, Maddox uncaring that in the process he was showing everyone around them just how fearful he was of the fact that the bully had Impressed a dragonet not even twenty seconds prior and already sicked it onto him. The disgruntled emotions that brought about caused confusion within him – why was he suddenly disgruntled? – before the gentle head-butt to his legs had Maddox collapsing backwards onto his butt, staring at the staring dragonet.

Come, Maddy, let us not linger here, the little dragonet said gently, watching patiently as Maddox gawked for a moment, before bursting into silent tears. The little brown stepped smartly into Maddox’s space and let the young man hold him for a few moments, allowing him to comprehend what was going on, before licking his cheek and gently encouraging Maddox to rise to his feet, and lead the way to the most delicious smell.

“Maddy-,” Maddox paused and flushed, staring at his toes as strands of hair fell away to help hide his face when his dragon rumbled displeasure and stepped forward, glaring up at the Assistant with irritable eyes. M’dox and I am Riquarth. Only I shall call him Maddy. Riquarth stared up at the Assistant, before nosing at M’dox’s leg and quietly starting to head in the direction of an unoccupied bucket of delicious meat chunks.

It wasn’t long after Modesty was ushered away that several others put in extra effort to join their siblings in the early morning light. The first to break free from the next batch tumbled out of the shell and hit his head off of a nearby egg. Desire then sneezed as sand got up his nose before trotting off in the direction of a boy with ever-widening eyes. By the time the little blue reached his bonded, V’ler was convinced the boy would either pass out or somehow manage to pop free his eyes. He was glad for another rather mundane Impression, though.

Envy tumbled free just before Greed but the bronze was quicker on gathering his feet and running off to a group of boys that suited his needs. He sat in front of Oslanis and two other boys, pleased as punch for claiming them all. Envy had something to say on the matter, though, and went charging up to her bronze brother, prepared to fight over the boys that were suddenly caught up in the mess. Envy ended up raking her claws across Greed’s face which sent the bronze off kilter and careening into one of the boys he had been claiming as his own. V’ler drew a sharp intake of breath when he saw one of the boys bleeding from the leg and noticed the way R’vi inched closer to Indivara. What was with bronzes and injuring humans, whether they meant to or not?

Finally two out of the three boys grabbed at a dragonet each, having Impressed to them during the scuffle and finally found the courage and dedication to their lifemates to intervene. Envy and Greed both settled down after that, especially with the promise of food.

Egotistical debuted next with pizzazz as he tripped over a chunk of shell that gave just the right momentum to send him into three perfect somersaults. He stopped on his bum, the shock at what had just happened very clear in his now sand-covered face before Egotistical found his footing, stood tall, and marched towards his bonded with his head held high. Clearly, he meant to do that! V’ler couldn’t help the smile at the proud blue and his grand entrance.

Only a handful of minutes passed before another flurry of activity hit with three more eggs cracking and being destroyed by determined dragonets. Generosity won the race, followed closely by Friendliness, and then [bronze]Humility[/dbronze]. The three all stared at one another for several heartbeats, V’ler personally holding his breath that they wouldn’t start another brawl and was relieved when they all scrambled in opposite directions to find their bonded. Other than Generosity adding to the list of the clumsy and tripping over his feet just before reaching his boy, and Friendliness rolling onto his back for a belly rub from his lifemate, V’ler didn’t need to log any other causalities or notes of interest.

While the few boys near Friendliness all indulged in giving him the requested belly rubs, Humble had quietly freed himself of the egg confinements and scoped out the area. Friendliness was finally being led off for food when Humble found who he was looking for and took off at a run. His excitement at finding his bonded caused him not to reel in the speed in time and he ended up jumping, instead of simply standing on hind legs, and knocked his mate to the ground. Humble gave a soft squeak of surprise, finding himself laying half on top of the boy and ducked his head in embarrassment. A moment later and he gave the boy a lick to the cheek in greeting. V’ler chuckled as the Impression reminded him of his own Hatching with Charath knocking him down before E’si led her off and Veeth came over to him for Impression.

Another small lull came before an egg practically exploded as the dragonet within managed to cause enough of a fuss to get out without the struggle the others seemed to have with small pieces falling away bit by bit. Wrath proved he was a no fuss kind of dragon and knew what he wanted. Barely free of the mess of shell he left behind, Wrath walked right up to a boy that nodded seconds later and fell in beside the bronze as they left the Sands together. V’ler simply blinked at the pair and made a little side notation that they would be a handful.

Several more eggs were stirring, shaking more with bits of shell falling off but it was Chastity that was up next to shine. He looked around at the remaining eggs but decided his siblings would be okay on their own and daintily moved around the still intact eggs and the debris of the others. Once cleared of the mess, Chastity sat down and, much like a cat, started to groom himself, making sure that his face was at least clean. Satisfied that he was presentable, Chastity finally moved off to a group of boys and one ended up following him to the feeding buckets.

Oslanis' eyes widened hopefully when a Bronze dragonet approached and plopped himself down in front of him and two other candiates. He glanced about not quite sure what was suppose to happen next. The Weyrlingmaster had said they'd know without any doubt if they impressed and he didn't feel anything beyond a little confused. Was it normal for a hatchlings to just sit there? His thoughts were cut short as a Green hatchling charged up, swiping her claws at her Bronze brother. Oslanis gave a startled yelp, stumbling back out of the way. Getting mauled was not on his to do list for today.

He breathed a little easier once the hatchling's new riders led them off to be fed. Mentally wishing them good luck with their new lifemates. They were probably going to need it. He used his sleeve to wipe a few beads of sweat from his forehead, hoping the rest of the hatching was a little less exciting. If he was on the sidelines he likely would have enjoyed observing a few near misses, but he wasn't a spectator he was a participant. Despite his worry a somersaulting Blue managed to earn a muffled laugh. He was beginning to feel more optimistic as a couple more Blue's hatched and impressed without any major incidents.

Oslanis was still watching an especially friendly little Blue, deciding that was just the sort of dragon he wouldn't mind impressing. Not one that was grumpy or temperamental just a nice sort of. He caught sight of something moving quickly out of the corner of his eye and had just started to turn when he was hit. He gave a surprised grunt as he fell back onto the sands, lifting his hand to shield his face from the oncoming attack. "Oh shards not my face." Oslanis wheezed, bracing for whatever was to come next, eyes squeezed shut. He was expecting sharp talons to rake across his flesh at any moment, but instead something warm and decidedly untalon like brushed across his cheek. Oslanis moved his hands peering out between his fingers to meet the gaze of a Brown dragonet who was half draped over his chest. The hatchling crooned softly, eyes swirling with a rainbow of color as Oslanis relaxed with a slightly giddy laugh, reaching up to touch his dragon.

"Shards Ergrinth you could have just said hello first." He chided as the Brown slid off his chest.[ergrinth]"Well if you hadn't been ogling those Blues maybe I could have."[/ergrinth] Oslanis got to his feet, brushing away the sand still clinging to his robe and inspecting himself for damage. Other than a few scratches he wasn't too badly injured. "Point made, now lets go get you fed." He said, ushering the milky brown toward the feeding area.

"L'nis and Ergrinth!" He announced proudly when the Weyrlingmaster inquired about their names. He thought they sounded good together, fitting for a dragon and his rider. "Oh shit!" L'nis groan a few minutes later, still dolling out pieces of meat to Ergrinth. [ergrinth]What's wrong?[/ergrinth] "They're not going to let me drink now! All that lovely hatching wine and I can't have any."

Ristandal was still having issues with breathing and fighting the urge to vomit thanks to the pressure he put on himself about Impressing or not when yet another dragon headed in his general direction. This time, a bronze seemed to show interest and he couldn’t decide if he wanted the little guy or not. His father would no doubt be thrilled if his son became a bronzerider like him but that brought on more anxiety for Ristandal about living up to his dad’s reputation.

When the bronze trotted on by, Ristandal was relieved but did his best to look like he wasn’t, which left him with an odd expression that likely led people into believing he had gas.

His expression slowly morphed, however, when the clumsy blue that bounced off another egg came towards him. With each step that kept the blue on a direction course to him, Ristandal’s eyes grew larger and he fought the urge to take a step back. Why was a blue interested in him? Maybe it was a mistake and he quickly looked around to see if anyone else was behind him. The blue stopped in front of him and Ristandal continued to stare and tried to breathe, but that was a skill he was learning he wasn’t quite good at.

“Y-you don’t want me, Edath. There are others that are far more… bluey than me.” Ristandal honestly didn’t know what colour he thought he was meant for and that had likely been part of the problem whenever Hatchings came around and he panicked over the dragonets running near him. His dad was bronze but he had friends or role models of all colours.

Edath tilted his head to the side, giving off every hint of curiosity as he regarded his bonded. I like you how you are and we can learn to be bluey together. Ristandal finally remembered how to smile, giving a lopsided goofy grin at the dragonet that made everything seem so simple and without consequence.

A glance up to where his dad was sitting showed M’ris smiling and giving him thumbs up. It didn’t seem like he was disappointed in not having a bronzerider for a son but Ristandal wondered if there was simply prestige in a dragonrider having his sons Impress any colour. Maybe it wouldn’t be too bad being bonded to a blue. Edath was a pretty shade as well!

Still grinning and slightly tripping over his own feet on the walk off the Sands, Ristandal stopped to get their names recorded and stood a bit taller when his soothing-voiced dragonet announced them.

I am Edath and this is R’dal. We will go eat now, with business done, Edath wandered over to a bucket that was set down and R’dal happily followed behind, waving at his friends that had also Impressed.

The last of the eggs were all still very active and seemed to V’ler that they didn’t want to wait around. They wanted to keep up with their siblings that had all wandered off merrily with their lifemates. Crave decided it wanted that more than the others as one foot started to kick at the opening that had been worked on for a bit. The shell easily started to fall away with enough of it missing, and Crave chirped her excitement and danced on the spot for several seconds before making a beeline for her bonded.

In the time it took Crave to dance, Gluttony and Jealousy tumbled free from their confinements. Neither seemed pleased that their sister found her rider first and both took off in a flailing of limbs to find their own. V’ler barely had time to watch one Impression before the other happened, making quick notes of the two greens and their young riders.

He was still writing down their names when Temperance burst on the scene, breaking up the string of greens V’ler started to think would happen. Aradissicath herself came from a clutch only had greens for her siblings so it didn’t seem too far-fetched that she would have a clutch much the same. Then again, he knew nothing of Xyreith’s history – something he’d have to bug R’nya about some time to better add to his history notes – and what those two together would always likely produce.

Temperance gave a cry of distress for a moment as he looked around, clearly confused about what was going on since Lethargic and Lust  were making progress on their escape and were both halfway free. Temperance was rescued from his confusion when an older boy came forward, crouching down a few feet away and calling to the blue.

As that bond was formed, Lethargic wriggled out of the shell that her back end was still stuck in. She flopped to the ground for a moment, clearly catching her breath after all that work and didn’t get back to her feet until Lust nudged her in encouragement on his way over to the boy meant for him. Lethargic followed behind and with Lust beside her, Impressed to one of the two boys standing side by side.

There were only four eggs left and it seemed like they all wanted out and attended to immediately. V’ler wasn’t sure, and it drove him insane that he didn’t know without a doubt, but he jotted down that Pride hatched first, followed by Diligence, Chaos, and finally Arrogant. Despite his annoyance, V’ler did manage a chuckle as more greens appeared. It wasn’t an entire clutch but seemed to be about half. He sighed as that just meant another dozen or so for Veeth to woo and chase.

Pride seemed to have more grace than her siblings as she slowly walked across the Sands while Diligence and Chaos seemed to be chasing each other in a fun game of tag before moving closer to their own bonded. Pride circled around one boy, clearly measuring his worth before she stuck her nose a bit higher in the air and continued walking by. Finally, she stopped at a young man that she deemed worthy with the right amount of excitement and respect. She primly sat down beside the man, waiting.

Diligence and Chaos’ game of chase finally ended when they both tumbled into a pair of boys that, thankfully, seemed to be their bonded though V’ler still saw some blood on the leg of the one that started to limp away after the excited greens.

With only Arrogant left on the Sands and without a bonded, V’ler held his breathe, hoping that the boy meant for him was there. It was one thing to see an egg left unhatched, but it was another to watch a dragonet between because their mate wasn’t there. He had seen and had to deal with too many deaths already in his short time as a dragonrider and didn’t want to add to the list already.

Thankfully, Arrogant seemed to only be judging everyone and felt he was too good to go to the boys as he called out for his bonded to come to him. A young man looked around for a moment then smirked, though it was clear that he was close to throwing the game back at Arrogant to make the dragonet come to him. In the end, the excitement of Impressing and the hunger radiating through their bond was enough to get the boy to collect his dragonet and move off.

Relieved that all of the eggs hatched and the babies Impressed with very minor injuries, V’ler turned to his little group of friends and gave a small and rare smile. Hatchings had a way of lifting spirits – when they went smoothly – and despite not really drinking alcohol since Impressing, V’ler was looking forward to the party that would follow and celebrating, possibly even with someone else.
