The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! N'del turned from his side onto his back as he woke, stretching and noting an unusual soreness to his body, something other than his normal morning aches and pains. His hand came in contact with warm skin and he gave a knowing sigh. Emeryth's flight. It always took him a few moments to recall the event and remind himself he was getting too old for such things. A man his age should have had a more permanent partner who'd know enough to take it easy with an old man.

He turned his head glancing toward the shelf where he kept a jar of numbweed for sore muscles. A wine skin also sat on the shelf and he wondered if it was too early for a glass. He reached out for Emeryth, but the Green was still asleep and he didn't feel like having to listen to her scolding for disturbing her. It was light out and if memory served Emeryth had risen around mid morning, once she'd been warmed by the sun, so it was at least mid or late afternoon. That was good enough for him.

Moving slowly, more because he had to than out of a desire not to disturb his partner, N'del slid his feet out of bed and sat up. Speaking of partners, he looked over his shoulder, taking note of the masculine figure in his bed. Yes it had been K'tir's Ghaeth who'd won this time around. N'del was relieved it was someone with experience and was unlikely to be looking for a long term arrangement. Emeryth often chided him for not finding someone, but even now he felt guilty over considering, as if he was dishonoring the memory of D'ken.

With a soft grunt he bent at the waist and snagged his pants between his fingers, thanking Faranth that they were close at hand. He slide his feet into the legs then pushed himself up to finish. Moving with a noticeable limp he retrieved the wine skin and poured himself a glass, taking a good swallow.

The shifting of the bed stirred K’tir into consciousness but only enough for an arm to drape over his eyes as if such an action would put an end to whomever thought he needed to be awake just yet. Habit had him reaching out to Ghaeth to see how his dragon was doing that day and while the usual chipper attitude was there, K’tir also felt that Ghaeth was beyond pleased with himself. That was somewhat odd and it took a moment to remember there had been a green flight that morning. Given the mood Ghaeth was in and the way the bed had shifted with someone else leaving it, K’tir had to assume he had won.

A small lazy smile appeared at that thought. Winning was definitely nice if for no other reason than Ghaeth’s benefit. Sure the dragon was just like his brothers in that he could enjoy himself through the bond and take pleasure from K’tir’s own but winning still served as a confidence booster. Besides, if he won, that mean a bluerider hadn’t and one more greenrider had survived another day without having to deal with turmoil of being with a blue. He had learned the hard way turns ago what they were capable of and K’tir didn’t want to see anyone else suffer.

Well done, Ghaeth. Enjoy your rest with your lady, K’tir hadn’t the foggiest idea who they had partnered with and Ghaeth was content to follow the advice and didn’t even bother offering a reply outside of a content sigh. Sliding his arm away from his eyes, K’tir blinked in the light, taking a moment to fully gather his wits about him again. At the sound of a drink being poured, he sat up which left the sheet sliding down his torso to pool in his lap. “I hope sex with me isn’t what leads you to drinking, N’del,” K’tir gave a small frown though it was playful; at least until he ran a hand through his hair. His dark locks had a natural wave that made for extra unruly bedhead. Still, he wasn’t about to chop off the length that barely brushed at his shoulders in the longest strands.

“Even if it is, do you have another glass? I’d hate for you to drink alone.” He offered a small smile, which was the most the vast portion of the population could get out of him on a good day. A quick study of N’del was given as he waited for a reply and couldn’t figure out what he felt about the win outside of the usual relief on behalf of the greenrider. N’del was older than him, perhaps double his age, but like all dragonriders, his age didn’t show and he looked younger than whatever number was attached to him. Also like other dragonriders, he had a decent body to him as well, something K’tir didn’t mind admiring. Still, if he was as old as assumed, the poor man should be retiring and not trying to keep up with the younger and sadly rougher men giving chase now.

The wine was just what he needed, even if it was a bit sharp as it washed across his tongue and down his throat. If there was one positive about returning North it was that they would have access to some decent wine once again. This stuff did the job, but it lacked the depth and quality of a wine made by someone who cared about more than just the alcohol content. He turned on his heels as K'tir spoke, snorting softly as he shook his head. No K'tir was not the reason, not that he really needed one these days.

"Of course, though I should warn you it's nothing special. Ran out of the good stuff so long ago I can hardly remember what it was like anymore." N'del answered as he found another glass, setting his own down as he poured one for K'tir. He couldn't recall if the man had a weyrmate or a particular attachment to anyone, not that such things really mattered during a flight. He somehow doubted it since the man didn't seem to be in much hurry to depart, though N'del seriously doubted it was his own company that held K'tir's interest. Not when the Weyr was full of plenty of young and unattached young men and women.

N'del retrieve his own glass a limped back toward the bed, doing his best to disguise that he was favoring one leg. He handed the man his glass before easing back down onto the bed. He took a sip from his glass, mulling over what would be a safe topic for this situation. "Are you and Gheath planning on returning North?" He asked after a moment. It was one of the more popular subjects at the moment. Some riders were eager to return while others seemed happy to remain in the lush South. It sounded as if the Katila would be maintained, but as what was still up in the air. A full fledged Weyr? A retirement home for older riders? A dumping grounds for misfits? Only time would tell.

The glass was accepted with a nod of thanks and K’tir sipped at it gingerly given the warning. Once they had stopped stealing people and goods from the North several turns ago, the citizens of Katila did their best to make what they had last but the wine was always free flowing and hard to keep hidden. K’tir wasn’t a fan of what was made in Katila anymore than the next man but he drank it when the mood struck and didn’t grimace nearly as much as he once had. That alone was enough of a reason to return North when S’kef deemed it time.

“It’s tempting,” he said instead, keeping his answer vague for a moment. There was a lot to consider but returning to the land that he had known in his youth before being corrupted and betrayed by Z’rak was hard to ignore the more he weighed the pros and cons. “I guess it’ll come down to the Weyrleader’s decision. One of the easiest ways to split us up would be by wing assignment so I guess it’s just a wait and see situation.” He supposed he’d be fine with any order he was given when it came down to it. Then again, he also had two kids and their mothers to consider. Not that travel time between the Weyrs would be that long and would still make it easy for visits.

“What about you?” He asked after another long sip of wine. Would the older man find it far more peaceful to stay at Katila or did he long for home and the sights of the North once more? There were so many differing opinions amongst their small population for reasons why they wanted to stay or go that it was rather surprising.

N'del took a sip from his glass, watching the other man mull over his question. He dipped his head in an agreeable nod at K'tir answer. It was a wait and see answer, but that was probably for the best. He wasn't sure what S'kef had planned for the return North. It was going to be a tricky transition for Weyr and Hold alike. Some would be eager to have the chance to become dragonriders, but he doubted the main holds would appreciate having to tithe to a Weyr again, unless S'kef had some other solution in mind.

"I'm not sure. I don't have any reason to go back, and the thought of moving again doesn't sound all that appealing. Emeryth is happy here and Katila is as good a place as any for an old Greenrider." He raised his glass to his lips. "Suppose I'll visit at some point. Maybe see if any of my family are still alive." His daughters would both be in their forties by now, if they were still alive. It was a bit strange to think he likely had grandchildren back North, relations he'd never even met and likely had no idea that he was even alive. "How about you. Any family up North?"

K’tir watched N’del and wondered what was going through the older man’s head. He was fairly forthright with his opinions and views but there was likely more behind each statement that was far more personal. It was understandable and not a huge issue to K’tir since he was also known for not readily sharing tidbits about himself so when the question about family was turned on him, there was a pause as he considered what to share. N’del likely had children or perhaps siblings with children that had been left behind during the migration South and no doubt he worried about what was left of that after so much time had passed. K’tir, on the other hand, didn’t have anything or anyone to return to.

He had been young and foolishly in love with a bluerider when everything fell apart and with no family to call his own. No doubt Z’rak had spread word of his clever game of stringing along the kid he brought South with him for so long and K’tir suspected rumours still floated around since the bastard had managed to survive every disaster to strike Katila thus far but he did his best to ignore it and instead focused his hatred of Z’rak and all blueriders into a need to protect those that were targeted by the blueriding games.

Eyes widened as he stared into his wine, realizing how much of a tangent his mind had taken, veering away from the question that had been posed. “No; no family. My father died in the South and no one knows who my mother is. I’d actually say I have more reason to stay in Katila with my children and their mothers – assuming they’re staying anyway.” He should probably look into that sine he couldn’t even fathom a safe guess as to whether or not the women would return North and where they would go from there.

He noticed K'tir's widening eyes, realizing the man had been taking his own trip down memory lane. He knew the younger man had been a candidate at Fort and had come South with Bluerider Z’rak. He wasn't sure of the exact details, but he did know the relationship had not ended well once Z'rak was done with him. N'del had been a rider long enough the casual nature of most encounters, but their was a difference between casual and cruel. Such incidents as K'tir's made him realize how lucky he had been to have D'ken when he could have so easily been taken advantage of.

N'del turned to watch K'tir as he spoke taking a swallow from his glass. It seemed as good a plan as any of them could make at the moment. He was content to let the younger or the more ambitious riders return North and try to make a go at reclaiming some sort of reputation. It wouldn't take too much effort to entice young men and women to stand once again. Reminding the holders of the magic of a hatching and how impressive a full grown dragon wasn't a difficult task, and might help them forget about the theft of their crafters.

"At least visits either way will be easy enough now that we'll be allowed them. Though I expect it will be a while before those up North won't give us dirty looks for showing our faces again." He said with a wry grin. People generally disliked changed, but he suspected the youngsters would be eager enough to have their heads filled with tales of impressing a dragon of their own. The liberal nature of the Weyr would also prove a haven for those the Hold's tended to shun once discovered.

“Very true,” K’tir agreed with a bit of a smirk. It seemed everyone, himself included at times, forgot how easily it was to travel with a dragon that wasn’t forbidden from going to the other continent. They had lived so long in seclusion with the dragons essentially grounded when it came to anything more than a flight to the lake that the notion of going from one Weyr to another in a matter of seconds didn’t occur. The move to Telgar seemed more like a separation and a final farewell to Katila and anyone that wanted to stay.

K’tir finished off the last of his wine and gazed into the bottom of the empty glass. “I should be on my way.” It wasn’t really his style to linger all day with his flight partner just as he wasn’t prone to heading out before his partner regained total consciousness. There always seemed to be an appropriate amount of time spent with the other person and this time it seemed a friendly drink and conversation together was enough. He didn’t have anything against N’del but nor did he want to lounge in bed all day either. Besides, Ghaeth was mentioning Dewdrop had joined him which means the little green firelizard had been sent to find him by his daughter.

Hopping out of bed, K’tir moved nude across the room to set his glass down where he had seen the greenrider pick it up from. Clothes were the next order of business and he slipped each piece on with relative ease and no comment. Once clothed, K’tir nodded a farewell to N’del and excused himself from the room.
