B’jin stirred into wakefulness as the sound of keening once more filled the air, and his blood ran cold even as he struggled into a sitting position; his mind immediately reaching for Larrikith while his eyes sought out Rhezalth. The little bronze was very much asleep on the end of Indamor’s bed, a back leg flopped over the edge, and the deep, steady rhythm of his breathing reassuring the greenrider. It wasn’t one of ours. Larrikith reassured him, before informing him on who it had been. B’jin frowned, saddened as he recalled the green. Shaking himself a little, the greenrider tore his mind from another lost life, trying to find something else to focus on.

The throbbing pain of a headache, and the lingering sting on his left bicep almost immediately captured his attention; a glance informed the greenrider of a long, deep slice that had been tended and wrapped, obviously by Talian. He flexed his arm, features grimacing as he realised there were stitches holding the wound closed. Fantastic, more scars. At least you still have your arm, the green’s tone was mournful and B’jin’s expression fell into one of deep sorrow as he turned his gaze on the fitfully sleeping form of his son.

Not even Talian’s superior skills had been able to put together the mashed bones in Indamor’s arm, and he had had to amputate it from about a hand’s width down from the shoulder. It was a massive array of padding, now, and the air in the immediate area was thick with the scent of numbweed. B’jin knew Indamor was well and truly out of it on fellis juice, and he’d remain that way for as long as possible; the greenrider was both concerned and impressed with how well the little bronze had handled things. He’s N’mor’s, Larrikith’s voice was amused but pointed, clearly stating ‘what other type of dragon would Impress to the serious and determined boy?’ B’jin smiled wanly, reaching out gently to pat the bronze dragonet.

“How are the others?” B’jin yawned, rising stiffly. He had collected together his class – or what was left of it – in the early afternoon; he’d lost six, in total. Such a waste, to lose such promising potential. It could have been a lot worse, love. So much worse.
“I know,” B’jin sighed, grimacing partly from the thought, and partly from the pain of lifting his injured arm. He lowered it, using his right to brush his hair off his face, and brushing over his cheek. He could feel the mud that was caked on it. So dirty, everyone was, the entire Weyr was in shambles. Daylight had not revealed anything pretty, and B’jin – like many others – had spent the day trying to dig up survivors.

A new skill for the Search worthy dragons - searching out the trapped souls in the mud, before both individuals and groups of dragons had set about digging them up. So many were injured beyond repair, and many seemed to die so close to being rescued. B’jin had – thankfully – lost count of the number of individuals he had had Larrikith drop between, and he didn’t envy the large dragons who had become responsible for depositing the bodies of deceased dragons between when they never made it. A bonus of Larrikith’s small size, surely!

Ayyonth! B’jin, so on edge, took too many heartbeats to realise Larrikith spoke her mate’s name with loving relief, and not fear, brown eyes wide and terrified for those few moments before R’nd walked into the room. B’jin bit his bottom lip, staring at his poor, abused looking lover. So dirty and covered in mud and blood (that had better not be his!) and grime and B’jin strode swiftly across the room, throwing his arms around R’nd and hugging him tightly.

He had mostly only managed to catch glances of his lover throughout the day, and Larrikith had reassured him with every death that R’nd and Ayyonth were not the pair in question. He had desperately wanted to run away and hide, to wait out the terror hidden away as far from the Weyr as he could get; to spend it wrapped up safely with R’nd where nothing bad could happen. However, he could not abandon his class, his son, the people of the Weyr he had helped save.

“I’m so glad you’re okay,” the words were begging, soft and desperate as he leaned back to look at R’nd’s face, eyebrows furrowed into a worried frown as he carefully brushed at a muddy streak on the bluerider’s cheek. Brown eyes searched grey, making sure R’nd truly was okay and he wasn’t putting on a show for B’jin’s benefit.

R’nd was on autopilot, acting similarly to how he was under flight lust. He staggered as he dragged his feet one step after the other and had a nearly vacant expression on his face. He had seen so much that he knew he could never forget, had done so much he wished he could have avoided, and the keening simply wouldn’t stop. He thought by now he would have blocked it out considering how truly nonstop it had been when the landslide hit the Weyr. Now, with each death growing more apart than the last, it was still a shock and caused his heart to stop beating as he waited to hear who it was. The tears had stopped for the time being, however, and only an emptiness remained as he mourned for the fallen and was made to go rest for a bit.

He had been constantly on his feet helping since being reassured by Ayyonth and then several Weyrlings and weyrfolk that B’jin was alive. He hadn’t truly been able to catch up with the greenrider to check B’jin over from head to toe and back again but it had been enough to know his lover was alive and as dedicated to helping everyone as he was. R’nd had kept himself busy moving rocks and digging through mud and everything else that had once symbolized a thriving community of life. Ayyonth helped him and a small group that slowly joined him over the day find survivors as well as those too broken for recovery whether mentally or physically and his brave blue handled that end of the tasks.

Once his little team realized he would work until he literally dropped into a coma of his own making, R’nd was sent to find a bite to eat and to rest. He couldn’t do either though. He hadn’t the stomach for more than water and even that had been tricky to keep down with the keening and the sight of the injured being rushed by or even the blood that he didn’t think was his on his hands. Sleep? R’nd didn’t think he’d ever have that again. What he needed was B’jin. He needed to hold the greenrider and make sure he was okay and give Ayyonth some downtime with Larrikith.

As soon as he opened the door and saw B’jin, a bit of life returned to his eyes and R’nd even managed to smile, even if it was only a small one. He held onto to B’jin as tightly as he was clung to and R’nd wondered if he would be able to let go when asked. Normally his hold was always gentle and loose, having figured out early on that B’jin needed the ability to move as he wanted and when he wanted. N’mall had done a number on the greenrider and R’nd had silently vowed to never put B’jin in any position he didn’t feel comfortable in. Now, however, that vow was forgotten as R’nd pulled B’jin close again and clung to his lover as if he was the last lifeline he had.

“Okay? I suppose so, but so much better now,” R’nd spoke softly partly from the yelling for assistance and reassuring the trapped all day having stolen much of his voice but also because his vacant gaze had drifted across the room and saw a human and a dragonet in bed. If people could find sleep, they didn’t deserve a bluerider making excessive noise. “I was so worried, love. When it happened, Ayyonth… he couldn’t… I thought…” R’nd stopped, unable to finish that thought. The heartbreak that he felt in that moment when he believed he had lost the greenrider forever had lingered with him all day, even with seeing B’jin in glimpses. He never wanted to experience that again.

“Are you okay?” R’nd finally, reluctantly, released his hold on B’jin so he could examine the man. He really rather preferred to cling a while longer but he couldn’t be that selfish. If B’jin was injured or even tired and needed to sit, he’d make sure he was looked after. R’nd was naturally numbed to any pain he may have felt earlier, having focused solely on search and rescue and now was no different. B’jin and his other closest friends always came first.

Ayyonth didn’t waste as much time as R’nd did in examining his mate as he nuzzled and examined Larrikith’s mossy green hide that was in need of a bath as badly as his own. That wasn’t an issue though; the cuts he could see on that beautiful hide were. You were wonderful today. He complimented with another nuzzle and then turned his attention to licking at some of the smaller cuts to clean them. The little green had been brave and assisted where she could as much as the largest bronzes and Ayyonth was proud to be mated to such a creature. He always knew she was a spitfire full of energy but she was fueled by so much more as well.

“I’m so sorry, love,” the greenrider’s voice was a hoarse whisper, regret and sorrow clearly written on his face. “It was so sudden, and the babies were so afraid, and I could barely hear anything over Larrikith screaming, and then G’komi…” B’jin’s voice broke and his hands fisted against R’nd’s chest as he shook his head slightly, banishing the images and the memories – for a moment. B’jin lifted his gaze back up to meet R’nd’s; “I lost six of them, not even a day old…” How could he be that terrible? He was responsible for keeping them safe, for preparing them for life. He had failed, failed to keep six of them safe, failed to bring them into the community as fully-fledged dragonriders – failed before he had even gotten a chance to start.

Then R’nd was pulling away, examining him, and B’jin stood still and patiently as he was looked over by his worried lover. Aside from the gash on his left arm, B’jin knew all his wounds were superficial and as over worked as Talian was bound to become – already was! – he knew and trusted the little Healer would not let anything bad happen to B’jin, and by proxy of his fretting, Indamor. Talian had already made sure B’jin’s wounds were cleaned and tended to, despite B’jin’s protests that there were others in far more need, before drugging him enough to knock him out for a couple of hours.

“I’m well enough,” B’jin promised, stepping forward again and kissing R’nd lightly on the lips, his features a perfect picture of exhaustion, warmed with loving affection. “Better than most,” he added softly, wrapping an arm around R’nd and looking towards where Indamor was lying in a drug induced sleep; Rhezalth had stirred, and was looking over at them, his oddly coloured head resting on Indamor’s stomach like one of T’ken’s canines.

“Indamor – he, he lost an arm.” B’jin’s chin dropped to his chest, the words thick with guilt; he didn’t say anything for a long while, unintentionally letting that piece of information sink in. In truth, he was afraid to tell R’nd why Indamor had wound up losing the arm… Another strike against his ability to keep the youngsters he was responsible for safe from harm. A second time he had failed to protect Indamor. “He went back for my guitar,” the greenrider whispered, turning his attention finally back up at R’nd, gaze desperate. He loved his guitar – it was one of his most prized possessions – but it was just that; it was just an item, and it certainly wasn’t worth Indamor risking his life, or losing a limb over. R’nd would know that, right?

He will be fine, the dragonet was clearly attempting to both whisper and reach out to both humans, two aspects he hadn’t nearly the experience to obtain – it resulted in his voice sounding gravelly and pitchy – and his eyes swirled with worry for his unconscious human. … Won’t he?

“Yes.” B’jin said firmly, meeting the dragonet’s gaze directly before turning his attention back to R’nd. “C’mon,” withdrawing the arm that had been around his lover, B’jin took his hand lightly and led him across the room to where there was a chair. Giving his lover a gentle push to make him sit, B’jin then dropped to the floor and curled up against R’nd’s legs, head resting on the bluerider’s thighs, as close as he could get without actually sitting on him – he was pretty sure the chair wouldn’t hold both their weight. Placing a soft butterfly kiss on R’nd’s muddy pant leg, B’jin pressed closer in a wave of desperation, clinging to his lover’s legs. “I love you.” The words were murmured, not really meant to be heard.

As were you, the green murmured softly, only flinching a little when Ayyonth’s enquiring muzzle brushed over a blooming bruise, her own attention more firmly focused on snuffling over his own hide, nosing sadly at the bits of blue that were broken up by trails of green ichor. Her poor, wonderful, beautiful blue – had she actually said that? Nuzzling his cheek, Larrikith pressed against him as much as she could without too badly interrupting his nursing of her wounds, while seeking out the worse of his own hurts to tend to herself.

At hearing the boy in the bed was Indamor, R’nd’s attention shot back to the bed, vision much clearer than it had been previously. He saw the bronze dragonet guarding the sleeping boy but he also saw the lack of arm and the bundle of bandaging. “Oh, B’jin,” the child often came across as creepy to R’nd and he had had a brief moment of wondering at the Hatching what it would be like with Indamor now a bronzerider, meaning he would one day properly outrank him. He never wished the kid harm though. His heart broke again for the pain he knew the boy was in physically and the pain B’jin was in mentally and emotionally. What would it be like to see Benden like that? He had been lucky, the toddler and his mother had been trapped in their room from mud blocking the hall but freedom had been obtained and neither seemed to sport much of a scratch.

The reason for the loss of the limb was heard but not absorbed properly as the odd voice he wasn’t used to hearing filled his mind. R’nd frowned at the tiny bronze and was about to answer but B’jin surprised him by beating him to it. He knew hatchlings had no volume control but he also knew how hard it was for dragons to communicate with the greenrider. That was a fun and positive thing he learned that day and as silly as it was, R’nd cherished it after all the turmoil and misery of the day.

A protest almost came when B’jin separated them but the hand in his put an end to that and R’nd followed along and allowed himself to be seated. Another protest started to form over getting the chair while B’jin sat on the floor but the greenrider looked content to cuddle up as he did so nothing was said. They still had a form of contact and R’nd was making sure B’jin didn’t leave his line of sight for quite some time.

While B’jin’s murmured words weren’t clearly heard, R’nd thought he heard B’jin state he loved his boy and took the chance to address the guilt that was nearly bursting from B’jin. “He grabbed it because he loves you. I don’t think he’s ever going to regret doing it and you shouldn’t either. Don’t ruin his dedication and love to you with that, love.” R’nd softly ran his fingers through B’jin’s hair. It was normally gorgeous and soft to the touch but it had seen better days. Dirty and knotted, it matched R’nd’s own and while appearances did mean a lot to the bluerider, it had been the last thing on his mind that day, though at one point he had managed to tie it back. His free hand went to his own head and R’nd nearly laughed when he found half of his hair was still tied up though the strands that framed his face had fallen loose. He left it as it was.

“I should have stayed with you. I wanted to give you some space… some sleep, so I went home. If I was with you…” Maybe he could have saved one of the Weyrlings that were lost. B’jin had named one, and he was a sweet lad, but R’nd wasn’t ready to hear the other names. There were so many he was still trying to come to grips with; like V’zire. He was one of the sweetest men R’nd had ever known and he was gone. He had heard about B’sen as well. At least two of his classmates had died in the tragedy. R’nd suspected there was more but Ayyonth had started to shield him, leaving out names as they mourned all day. V’zire though; that had been hard. No; he didn’t want to hear anymore names that day.

“I’m sorry, B’jin.”

"Please don't," B'jin whispered softly, turning his head slightly, reluctantly for the combing fingers were both pleasing and comforting, to peer up at R'nd with sad, sad eyes. The bluerider blaming himself wouldn't help anything, and would only make worse the feelings of helplessness that were coated so thickly over everyone. It seemed as if the world itself were breathing out 'what if?' on every exhale. So many things could have, should have, would have... Why torture one's self with such thoughts?

B'jin rose slowly onto his knees, tired and sore, and wriggled closer to R'nd so he was between the bluerider's own, arms curling around his lover's back and he hugged him tightly, far more cling than cuddle. He puffed out an unsteady sigh, the exhale broken and jerky as he pressed his face to R'nd's chest. The battle against falling apart was a losing one, and B'jin's shoulders began to shake as the horror of the day won out. The dampness of tears joined the dirt and grime on R'nd's shirt.

The greenrider was silent, though; the only sound he made was the irregular gasps of breath. He'd long learned the art of silence, even if he hadn't wanted to avoid the risk of waking Indamor, or disturbing the dragonet that was sleeping at intervals on the youngster's bed. B'jin felt Larrikith's presence curl protectively around the edges of his mind, just as he was conscious of the strength and safety of R'nd. What would he do, without his wonderful, beautiful bluerider?

Forgetting about his fear of the chair's strength - or lack there  of - B'jin pulled away just barely enough to lift himself, straddling his lover's lap and stealing a kiss filled with desperation, fear and love. What would he have done, if one of those keens had been the result of Ayyonth going between? If R'nd had lost limb or life? Fat tears tumbled down his cheeks as his own terrible 'what if's' planted roots and took hold firmly, leaving the greenrider trembling.

How could he ever have survived, knowing someone as amazing and wonderful as R'nd had not? It matters not; heed your own advice love; do not linger on the unanswerable. The green dragon's voice was uncommonly mellow, and lingered on the outskirts of his mind; his thoughts were in a flurry, and Larrikith wasn't quite willing to brave them.

"I couldn't stand to have lost you, love; I need you." The words were spoken on a husky whisper, B'jin so afraid in that moment of the terrible what-if scenarios he had conjured and consequently lost R'nd in, to think that such words might frighten the typically flighty man.

R’nd was more than okay with silently holding B’jin. The clinging hug was welcomed and returned as best as he could with the way B’jin was kneeling but R’nd made sure there was constant touch and there connection was never broken. He knew apologies didn’t fix everything and they certainly didn’t in regards to what was bothering him but R’nd had needed to say the words all the same. He did blame himself, and would continue to do so for some time to come, but for the moment, B’jin’s order to stop apologising and the unspoken words that were in brown eyes that said no one could have changed anything, especially now, silenced R’nd.

Having B’jin suddenly in his lap made for clinging to the man so much easier and R’nd held him close, uncaring about tears on his shirt. There was an idle thought about how he was getting B’jin dirty and his beautiful greenrider shouldn’t have had to deal with everything that was coating clothes and skin but R’nd couldn’t push B’jin away. He needed the hug and contact as much as B’jin seemed to need it. It made everything real and helped comfort him after a horrible day. There was still the fear that as soon as B’jin was out of sight or even out of arms’ length that he would vanish forever.

“Shh, my love, I know. Oh, do I know. I need you as well.” R’nd’s voice was soft as he tried to soothe away B’jin’s fears that echoed his own but B’jin’s safety and peace of mind always trumped his own. “I’m still here and I’m not going anywhere without your dismissal, B’jin. I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.” Arms already wrapped around B’jin tightened as R’nd buried his face in B’jin’s hair. He always made sure to never make B’jin feel captured and R’nd didn’t try to dominate the man now either. Instead, it was a grasping hug of reassurance that conveyed things he couldn’t say.

You can say them. Ayyonth continued his examination of Larrikith and nuzzling her at intervals but R’nd needed a guiding hand. If now wasn’t the time to say things trapped in his heart, when was a better time? A glimpse of a memory in the bathhouse flittered by but neither male paid too much attention to it; R’nd being the man that was so good at blocking out things that scared him and Ayyonth not counting something that was filled with misunderstandings and fear. This was fear as well, but it was different and words would help comfort them all.

I can’t, Ayyonth. Words are all I have but they can ruin things as well. Ayyonth gave an irritated puff of breath as he glanced over to the building. You can and you need to. You have all the words in you, R’nd. Don’t fear them. With his advice given, Ayyonth withdrew to the back of R’nd’s mind once more. His presence was there for strength and comfort but he wasn’t a main focal point.

R’nd gave a soft laugh and shook his head as if he couldn’t believe it. “Even now, Ayyonth is lecturing me. Some things never change and are a constant no matter what.” As he said that, only intending to reference Ayyonth’s attitude towards him, R’nd realized his stupid dragon may have been right after all. There were words locked away that he could say but didn’t want to say for one hesitant reason or another but in that moment, all the reasons vanished. “Like my love for you.” R’nd pulled away enough so he could place a kiss to B’jin’s forehead, tip of his nose, and then lips. Openly loving someone still frightened R’nd since it could one day hurt that person but he had nearly lost the man in the devastation and in felt right and even good to let B’jin know someone loved and cared deeply for him.

B’jin’s breath hitched at R’nd’s soft reassurances, the greenrider’s desperate grip tightening around his lover as the words rolled repeatedly in his mind. B’jin trying desperately to process them, but at the same time, terrified that the moment he did something would happen, someone would waltz in, and pull the carpet out from under his feet. B’jin had never expected such admittance from R’nd, and he responded to the clinging hug in turn, face pressed to R’nd’s neck, both counting and revealing in the moment.

When R’nd laughed softly, and shook his head, B’jin was quite certain that what he had feared had raised its ugly head. He did not know what it was, or how it would play out only that he was sure R’nd had realised what he had said and would take it back, probably even take himself away. After all, what was B’jin but an eccentric old greenrider with far too much baggage? An oddly vague and emotionless expression fell over B’jin’s face as R’nd pulled away, the words echoing around his mind and going unprocessed as the bluerider kissed him on the forehead, and then on the nose.

It was only when R’nd pressed a light kiss to his lips that B’jin managed to process what had been said, and brown eyes widened, blinking in a startled manner before eyeing R’nd with a heavy mixture of surprised hope and heartbreaking wariness. It wasn’t that B’jin thought R’nd was playing with him, such a thought never so much as passed him by, but rather … Well, R’nd was known to be flighty and B’jin could still remember (when he chose to recall it) the time he’d first told R’nd he loved him (by accident! He had not meant to!) and the bluerider had almost passed out on the spot and B’jin had never been sure why he didn’t run. The thought that R’nd might be speaking in the emotional waves following everything that had happened, that was not so hard for B’jin to believe.

“You love me.” It was not a question, in any manner of speaking, and the words were quiet, smooth and firmly stated as B’jin’s brown eyes studied R’nd’s face carefully. He searched grey eyes for any hints of… B’jin wasn’t sure what he was searching for, but he knew what being loved by N’mall had entailed and while he wasn’t even aware he was searching for it, he was. On another level, he wanted to see how R’nd would react to his words being spoken back to him, to see what he would say or do. Would he take them back, or flee? R’nd had never so much as hinted that he enjoyed B’jin’s company as anything more than a rather beneficial friend (all such instance of R’nd speaking of love were as lost to B’jin as they were likely lost to R’nd). Did he even realise what he had said a moment ago?

B’jin searched R’nd’s face, his lips pursing just a little. “I love you, too.” It was spoken so seriously, a frown marring B’jin’s features as he waited for something to happen to make him regret those words. He knew he had told R’nd how he felt before. He could remember going out of his way to change the subject when words that should never be spoken slipped by uncensored; the horrible feeling of his stomach flipping and going to ice as he tried to fix the scene before R’nd processed and ran, forgetting all about the world around them. That moment was no different; the landslide, the mud, dirt, and grime they were covered in, the deaths of friends and family and loved ones, and even his young son drugged into unconsciousness not so very far away were all forgotten.

How R’nd reacted was beyond important to B’jin in that moment and he was wound up with rolling nervousness as he waited for a response, his face a picture of every negative worry, and every spark of hopeful anticipation.

Larrikith eyed Ayyonth sideways, her amusement almost as thick as the mud that had crashed down upon their home. He is so pathetic, her voice was a dry drawl as she snuggled closer to her blue mate. But he’s mine. And she could share him with R’nd, she supposed. An amused glance was given to Ayyonth and she licked his cheek.

R’nd visibly flinched when B’jin threw his words back at him. It wasn’t that he hadn’t computed them when he had said them but it was the way B’jin spoke them that had R’nd regretting opening his mouth after all. It wasn’t what B’jin had wanted to hear and it was purely selfish of him to do so. It was clear to R’nd now as the three words spun round and around in his head, giving Ayyonth more of a headache than himself. How could he say such a thing, declare he needed B’jin as well, when the man was in need of the supportive shoulder as he watched his only son lie unconscious on a bed and lacking an arm? It was already beginning; he was going to ruin and hurt B’jin because he couldn’t turn off his emotions for the greenrider that had held a special spot with him since day one.

“I do. I’m sorry,” R’nd whispered as his gaze lowered to stare at B’jin’s chest. That likely wasn’t good enough though. He should get up and put distance between them since he had disgusted his lover so much, yet he couldn’t. How could he walk away from everything that brought him peace, comfort, and the surprising amount of love he wouldn’t have believed he was capable of having turns ago? He couldn’t and like he had said to B’jin, the greenrider would have to be the one to walk away and dismiss him so R’nd didn’t twitch a leg muscle under an urge to leave.

His gaze flew back up to that of his lover’s when the words were returned. They weren’t fluffy and sweet like how others often said them but the affection was still there and in a way, making it a statement such as he had done made it all the more powerful and real to R’nd. Again, the urge to flee didn’t come to him and R’nd continued to stare at B’jin silently for one breath and then another, gathering what few thoughts he could string together.

“Thank you,” again, his voice was a whisper as R’nd struggled to find his way through the emotions swirling around his head and between them. There was fear there amongst the gratitude and relief but it was hard to figure out why. B’jin was safe and unharmed, those precious to them were also safe – mostly; R’nd still found it hard to process the loss of some friends, finding denial easier for the moment – so why was he afraid after such matter of fact statements had been made?

Realization hit him hard and faster than Ayyonth’s gentle prodding into or even away from the answer could reach him. “I’m scared, B’jin. Your words aren’t scaring me like they always have when others say them but…” R’nd cupped B’jin’s cheek and gently stroked his thumb over smooth skin. Did he want to voice the new fear? What if it made it come true? B’jin deserved the truth even if it made it a reality one day. “I’m afraid that one day you won’t say the words anymore.” So many people would have fallen over laughing if they heard such a thing from his mouth and even with the desire to check to see if N’mor was awake and heard, R’nd kept his gaze on B’jin. It was also frightening how invested he was but Ayyonth’s wave of reassurance that he had done the right thing eased a lot of the tension from stiff shoulders and an overly active mind.

I sometimes think they both will never be anything but that, my dear. Ayyonth rumbled with his amusement and affection for the humans that continued to keep him entertained – and overworked. One day he would have a quiet day with Larrikith without having to monitor what they were up to make sure they didn’t sabotage what they had because of whatever new reason they made up that was all in their head. But they have potential to grow and surprise us and I think R’nd just has.

“Don’t thank me,” B’jin was amused. “I didn’t choose to. It just happened.” Rather a long time ago, too, but he opted to spare R’nd that particular detail. He was still wary of frightening the bluerider by bringing forth too many emotions and poor R’nd rather looked somewhat lost as it was. B’jin leaned forward enough to place a light kiss on his lover’s lips, watching the play of emotions across the other man’s face with interest. “And don’t apologise either.” A frown marred B’jin’s forehead and his words were slightly irked, an uncommon display of his more demanding side. Had either of them been less than on the same page, then perhaps apologies would have been more appropriate. Presently, however, B’jin considered them both moot and silly. They were on the same page, why apologise or thank each other for that? It was not as if they did it to upset one another!

The light hand on his cheek stirred him out of his thoughts, and B’jin blinked up at R’nd with a mingled expression of curiosity, concern and wariness, wondering where it was he’d run off to in his own mind in those few moments B’jin had been checked out. Brown eyes narrowed slightly, wary, before widening once more and the greenrider gave a soft snort. “Inevitably,” B’jin shrugged. “Nothing lasts forever.” Despite his words, which were gentle, B’jin wrapped his arms around R’nd’s neck and tightened them a little, wriggling closer on his lap. He kissed R’nd lightly on the nose. “I won’t promise that it won’t,” eyes were sparkling as he kissed R’nd on the lips before continuing. “However, I can promise it won’t be today. Or tomorrow.” Butterfly kisses travelled up the line of R’nd’s jaw to his ear. “Probably not even the day after that,” that was more breath than whisper and B’jin watched the tiny hairs on R’nd’s neck stand up in amusement.

Leaning back suddenly, B’jin met R’nd’s eyes very seriously, teasing gone for the moment. “I love you now, and now you know. Should that ever change, you will know then. However,” B’jin’s nose scrunched up a little as he considered his next words, before continuing, voice very soft and serious. “I loved N’mall for eighteen years, and it took a very unforgivable act on his part to make that stop.” He searched R’nd’s face for a moment; he had never spoken of why he had broken up with N’mall, not to anyone, though just about everyone had heard them screaming at each other, and the dragons bellowing as B’jin surprised the brownrider with a sudden show of spine and kicked him out of their hut, and his life. He took a deep breath, before speaking very softly; he was not interested in anyone passing by hearing.

“He was watching the kids while I… was doing something; I don’t remember what. I came home, and Amorandii was crying in the bedroom and Indamor was standing in the doorway glaring at N’mall. I walked in just as he slapped Indamor across the face. I think he was angry with Amorandii, and Indamor would not let him near her. It does not matter, anyway. They were only babies, my babies.” B’jin’s breath puffed out through his nose angrily. He didn’t need to say he’d move the very realm of between to protect them, if need be; it was written all over his face. “I’ve never been so angry, R’nd,” there was a tormented sigh lingering in the words, and B’jin’s gaze was locked more on his lover’s chest than his face though he was seeing far more of the past.

He lifted his gaze warily after several moments of silence, chewing anxiously on his bottom lip. “You won’t do that.” It was a simple statement, said matter-of-factly as B’jin met R’nd’s eyes frankly, unspoken words lingering in the steady gaze: R’nd did not hit B’jin, he certainly was not about to hit his kids. “I really can’t imagine any other reason to stop.” Even stopping loving N’mall had been far from easy, and had taken a lot of work from Par’a to stop him begging the brownrider to forgive him – at least when B’jin wasn’t seething in outrage that the man had dared to raise a hand to his kids. It was that fact, and Par’a’s own stubbornness, that had won the greenrider into staying single and soldiering on.

A lucky thing for R’nd, really!

Life would be very droll without their antics, Larrikith agreed happily, highly amused by B’jin’s latest and more uplifting thought.

It was becoming increasingly clear that he had no idea what he was doing or what he was supposed to say in such times. Apologising for loving B’jin before realising it was mutual had been a mistake and thanking the greenrider for having mutual feelings had only ended up making him feel horrible thanks to the reply. He could understand it wasn’t a choice and that such things came naturally on their own time but it stung to hear it all the same. B’jin hadn’t wanted to love him. R’nd couldn’t fully blame him for that but he still had an ego that bruised and it wasn’t pleased to hear that there was someone out there that hadn’t noticed him and didn’t want his affection and love as easily as others. He knew he was a contradiction when it came to such topics; wanting people to fawn all over him but fearing the day when they truly fell for him. Now, he was stinging from the fact that it sounded like B’jin could be classified as annoyed by the fact that he fell in love.

A laugh was close to bursting free when B’jin so casually said they would one day not love each other anymore and part. It would likely happen and it would be his fault since he had always feared commitment and hurting his partner emotionally if he got too attached. One day B’jin would wake up and wonder why he was with a bluerider that had slept with everyone in the past and had very little redeeming qualities or skills. In the end, R’nd knew he was nothing more than a fisherman and he wasn’t even the best at that despite his sea-crafting minor holder father’s efforts. His reading and writing had suffered thanks to being Searched young and living in exile and Katila after that. He wasn’t a singer, couldn’t cook, and could have killed B’jin with the amount of fellis he gave the man once because he didn’t know better. Why would anyone want to stay with him?

He felt like such a fool for confessing to what he feared. Why would he think what he had with B’jin would ever last? Why would he think B’jin would want it to? Why did he think B’jin would understand and simply hug him with silent reassurance? He never revealed too much of himself; only a few people even knew his birthday. He was just supposed to be the friendly pretty face that everyone got along with and slept with. Fears, dreams, desires; they weren’t supposed to factor into anything. People were happy with not seeing a deeper side and R’nd had been happy to supply the shallow end since it kept him safe from getting hurt. He had figured out early on that B’jin was the exception to the rule and had enjoyed their lazy games of questions and ‘what if’ scenarios as they lounged in bed together but now he felt like he had revealed too much and B’jin now held his weakness and could use it at any time.

The butterfly kisses were almost missed as R’nd stared into nothingness as he fought with his emotions yet again. He had ruined everything while trying to save it. The breath over his ear managed to make the hairs on his neck stand up but also drew his attention back to B’jin with a shiver. He was so lost and had no idea how to explain that he was or why. It was probably best not to anyway given the mess his confessions had already put him in. At least now he knew he had grounds for his fear and wouldn’t be surprised when he woke up one day to find B’jin gone.

R’nd, stop it.

I’m not doing any- Ayyonth wasn’t having the excuses and cut R’nd off before he could really get started. His stupid human would ruin what he had found with B’jin if he wasn’t careful and he had no desire to let that happen. R’nd was happy and growing as a person and a dragonrider in his time with B’jin and Ayyonth was rather comfortable and happy with Larrikith as well.

You’re withdrawing into yourself again. You made no mistakes in sharing your fears. You trust B’jin and now you know you love him as well. You’re supposed to talk with him and open up. Quit holding back because you think you will end up with a broken heart again or you’ll break his. You’re both big boys and if you actually listen instead of simply hearing his words, you’ll catch everything that isn’t said in clear words as well.

R’nd was about to deny the accusations and prepare for an argument with Ayyonth but instead winced when N’mall was suddenly brought up and the confession that B’jin loved him for so long was like a punch to an already sore stomach. It was so easy to forget about that relationship and that he followed it, despite the length of time between N’mall and his appearance in the greenrider’s life thanks to a flight victory and a sudden bout of courage that had him approach B’jin one afternoon. Everyone knew the rumours of the break up but R’nd had never asked for details. Like with other things, he had learned B’jin’s boundaries and which topics were off limits to him.

At some point during his misery, his hand had slipped away from B’jin’s cheek. It lifted to rest there again but R’nd froze and let it drift back down to his lover’s waist. He had always been so careful when it came to his hands going near B’jin’s face since early on when the greenrider would constantly flinch and prepare to be hit. They had both adjusted and light stroking of blonde hair or a caress to a cheek were able to be given when he didn’t catch the man off guard. Now that he was back to being self-conscious about everything he did combined with the story that was being told, he couldn’t dare lift his hand. Besides, in that short moment he had tried, R’nd caught how shaky it was and knew B’jin didn’t need to see how physically rattled he was over everything.

“I’m not N’mall,” R’nd finally managed to say something, finding that statement the easiest thing to point out when B’jin verified he knew the bluerider would never hurt him or the children. It was a simple task to separate the story from everything else they were talking about, making it its own topic and not at all tied to his fear of being left alone with shattered heart and emotions because one day B’jin would fall out of love with him. In the back of his mind, he knew he had said that to B’jin before as well, but most of that incident had been purposely blocked out given how much it shook him up later on when he had recalled everything else that had been said that night.

It took a moment to realise that B’jin was referring to loving him when he spoke again about not imagining anything else to make him stop. Taking Ayyonth’s latest lecture to heart, R’nd latched onto that thought and combined it once more with the previously said things. B’jin had loved a horrible man that abused him and finally ended it when the children were involved but he knew R’nd only raised his fists in order to defend them. B’jin wasn’t being cold about loving him and one day not; it was simply that he had loved before and knew it was possible for it to come to an end. He was simply being practical and cautious; like R’nd had been. They were on the same page still but life experiences made them read everything differently.

“I promise to always protect you and your children from the monsters, love. If I ever turn into one, please drop me between.” He would hate himself if he ever turned into such a man and would likely send himself on the trip before B’jin could.

Finally, a smile slowly appeared once more and R’nd placed a lingering kiss on B’jin’s forehead and let out a long sigh of relief as he softly guided B’jin close again for a warm hug that had him dropping his head on the greenrider’s shoulder. His gaze landed on N’mor and the adorable bronze dragonet beside him and R’nd straightened up again to carefully examine B’jin’s face for the telling signs of fatigue. “You haven’t rested yet, have you?” He wasn’t one to talk though; R’nd hadn’t slowed down that day until he entered the room and found the chair.

“Rest, love. Even if it’s only for a little while. I’ll watch over you and Indamor.”

“No, you’re not.” While there was no true emotion in the way B’jin said that, there was certainly no regret in his words, and brown eyes were affectionate as they searched for and held R’nd’s gaze. He was still wary, but it was lost in the depths of himself where even B’jin wasn’t really sure if it were there or not. R’nd was sweet, and gentle and perhaps not as demanding as N’mall had been, even back in the beginning, but N’mall had not started heavy handed and he had once been sweet. Hindsight had B’jin capable of seeing how and when the man had changed, how he had become more confident when he had realised B’jin was his, and the way their relationship had altered as a result.

He was afraid of that happening with R’nd. Afraid not of waking up one day and realising he didn’t love the bluerider anymore, but rather than the bluerider’s love had become the same twisted type as N’mall’s. He was afraid of ruining the perfectly wonderful person R’nd was, by doing whatever it was that he had done, that had soured N’mall. A soft, breathy laugh escaped at R’nd’s gentle statement, the sound far more relief and not a lick of humour as he clung to the bluerider. R’nd’s sigh was not missed, and B’jin nuzzled the crook of R’nd’s neck as he let himself be held, enjoying the simple contact.

When R’nd straightened them up and gave him such a calculating look, B’jin’s eyebrows arched up just slightly in question. They lowered as the man gave a droll laugh of dark humour. “Rest?” It was an ironic, rhetorical question, as if to say ‘what is that?’ as he shook his head in answer all the same. “The last keen woke me,” his left arm unwound from R’nd’s neck so he could rub his hand over his face, and then rake blonde hair back from his face. He had slept, certainly, but it had been far from restful and B’jin was not sure when he would ever have a solid night’s sleep again. Not any time soon, for sure. Between the slide, the weyrlings and the situation with his son, B’jin was fairly sure sleep would be one of those rare and elusive things he wouldn’t get to see for quite a while.

B’jin was reluctant to get up, but he was also leery of falling asleep, however fitfully, while on R’nd’s lap. Surely the bluerider had terrible pins and needles by now, anyway! Smiling gently, B’jin stood up slowly, placing a light kiss on R’nd’s lips before making his way across the room, and sticking his head out the door. He gave a startled squeak when Shimmer appeared from between right before his nose, then lifted a hand to let the little gold land on it. He threw a glance back over his shoulder at R’nd before stepping out the door and closing it gently behind him; he followed Shimmer down the hall.

The greenrider returned some ten or fifteen minutes later with two pillows, a heavy blanket and a mischievous expression. He slipped back into the room quietly as Shimmer muttered something under her breath and floated around the Harper’s head. B’jin ignored her as he searched out R’nd and flashed the bluerider a smirk. Ignoring the seat they had been sitting on, B’jin instead angling for the far corner of the room, and set both pillows down so they were half folded, turning to raise eyebrows at R’nd. When R’nd hesitantly joined him, B’jin inelegantly forced the bluerider to sit down, using the pillow as half seat, half backrest, before settling himself comfortably between his lover’s legs, back to chest. The blanket that B’jin had brought was given a flick, sending it spreading out over their legs. Shimmer flittered around the edges, before nosing her way under and creeping up the length of B’jin’s leg.

The greenrider watched the little moving lump with visible amusement before he leaned back against R’nd, tilting his head back and kissing the bluerider’s neck. “You need to rest too,” he stated, though there was lingering tones of amusement behind the gentle words that were warmed with affection. His face was a picture of the positive emotions, before he cringed, sighing softly and sadly as another keen rang out, reminding him of the horrible situation that was outside the little bubble he was wrapped in with R’nd.

Larrikith’s voice was there, as sudden as the keen, but loving and reassuring him that it was no one they knew personally, not one of theirs, not one of ‘them’. B’jin pressed back against R’nd with a shudder, greatly discomforted by that reminder of what was beyond the door of the room they were in. For a few moments, he had forgotten any of that which was a result of the disaster had existed; even his thievery of the blanket and pillows had been twisted into a game of not getting caught, a game created to put aside the horror of seeing so many broken bodies, so many harried healers, so many lost people. B’jin grimaced with an unhappy sigh; twisting, he caught R’nd in a lingering, desperate kiss before curling into his lover’s chest and burying his face in the crook of his neck.

Shimmer squealed at being battered about when B’jin altered how he was sitting, and moved so she could creep up R’nd’s leg, then over B’jin and claw her way up the greenrider’s chest, she appeared from under the blankets and frowned at them both with her delicate little golden face. Taking off, she fluttered free of the two men, and settled elegantly on the bed by Indamor, curling up against the boy’s shoulder with a purring hum.
