Rhaedalyn was ready, for the most part. She had spent the day taking advantage of everyone letting her be lazy and prepare for the evening. A bath was given to both Aradissicath and herself, taking their time at each location. More time was dedicated to napping as well since the morning’s events had left her drained yet oddly relaxed.

Too much time had been spent on her dress as well. Recently she had gone through her wardrobe, updating everything with new stitching techniques or adding new ribbons or turning winter clothes into summer or vice versa. While it was cliché given the association of the colour to virginity, she had finally decided to go for her simple knee-length white gown that had been spruced up with a light blue sash of ribbon around her waist. She had made sure it wasn’t too closely resembling Harper Blue since she knew how protective of that colour those men could be. Dainty little slippers in the same shade of blue had been borrowed from a friend to complete the look.

The only issue was her mess of curls. Rhaedalyn frowned again at her reflection in the small mirror she had been given on her last birthday and tugged at a strand. Indivara was right; she really did have too much hair! The obvious solution was to pull it back or up in a bun but in the end Rhaedalyn opted to braid the front strands and clip them back, letting most of her hair fall down her back. A little smile was given to her reflection and for a brief moment, Rhaedalyn felt pretty and not at all awkward.

Hurry up! Aradissicath was not the most patient of dragons but she was even more unbearable when there was something particularly important waiting for her. They had a party to attend! A party for them! No, for her. It was to celebrate her magnificent flying earlier that day in her maiden flight which meant there would soon be another clutch on the Sands. Naturally her clutch would be amazing as well. Krypth’s were small and unremarkable – it didn’t matter to Aradissicath that Krypth had clutched her – although Okalinath’s clutches were lovely, she was sure.

A little giggle was given in response to the dragon and Rhaedalyn skipped outside. “I’m ready. Let’s go, Dissi.” It wasn’t ladylike to ride a dragon in a dress but they weren’t going far and Aradissicath promised to take it slowly and land just far enough away from the gatherers that Rhaedalyn could fix her appearance when her feet touched the ground again. It worked as well, though as soon as the dress was smoothed and hands quickly checked on the braids, the nerves flared up.

“They’re all here because of us.” Rhaedalyn spoke softly and barely resisted nibbling on a fingernail, going for her lip instead. Of course they are! That’s the whole point. Oh, how she wished she had her dragon’s confidence and carefree attitude! “Yes, but…” how did she explain it to her dragon? They had such a different view on most things and held morals in a different light.

“They’re celebrating you flying, Dissi. That means… they’re also celebrating me having sex.” Again she barely spoke above a whisper, forgetting the entire conversation could have been held internally thanks to the nerves. It was so weird to have people celebrate such a thing though if it were a wedding night, the same thing would have been happening. That was still a bit embarrassing but at least the couple were united together. She hadn’t known who she was sleeping with until her mind was cleared entirely. The fact that it was R’nya was something she had been debating and ignoring in turns all day. It was a good thing but was it also a bad one?

Punch. She needed punch. With determination, Rhaedalyn bee-lined for the beverage table, smiling shyly at every congratulations and knowing grin that was given her way. She wasn’t much for drinking but right then, alcohol was exactly what she needed and she allowed a bluerider to pour her a glass that she quickly took to sipping at.

Stop being so glum and cheer up! Enjoy the night. We’re the stars and deserve to shine bright. Tomorrow is when we’ll reflect on everything. Aradissicath preened as some people came by to congratulate her as well all the while looking for Xyreith. The grumpy bronze had the potential to hate the night’s gathering and she couldn’t wait to see how he, and R’nya, handled it.

R’nya had spent the majority of the day being pricked by pins and sewing needles by a grouchy little greenrider that had been tasked with altering the bronzerider’s gather wear on short notice. R’nya didn’t really expect any better, even if the brat was from Rhaedalyn’s class – the child apparently had a bee in his bonnet and was taking every opportunity to draw blood with the pins he was using to re-arrange the hems of the bronzerider’s jacket.  It didn’t really occur to him that the pricks were more likely from his fidgeting, since R’nya wasn’t generally prone to fidgeting. It took forever, as far as the bronzerider was concerned, for the taskt o be completed. Apparently, the young greenrider felt about the same, because he was dismissed effectively.

R’nya bee lined for another bath, while Xyreith – laughing up a storm – made his way to the lake edge to entice children to wash him, since clearly R’nya had no intention of doing any such thing.

When he resurfaced, R’nya was particularly well dressed in a well-tailored suit of re-dyed black; the southern sun having previously bleached the fabric. The shirt he wore under it might have been hit and miss by most standards, if it were not a remarkable match for Xyreith’s bronze hide. A tarnished green, the shirt dipped into more coppery-bronzed shades towards the base. Dedicated stitching along the neckline was reminiscent of dragons twining through flight.

R’nya wasn’t sure if he were more self-conscious of the shirt he was wearing, or the reason for the gathering, but the bronzerider strode towards the main event with purposeful steps and his chin up, not displaying any indication of his ill ease. Even at the best of time, it was unwise to show weakness – but there was no place this was more true than the undercurrents of Katila! The population had already proved several times over it would sacrifice its own community members for the ‘betterment’ of all. He didn’t need to become a sacrifice.

My lady, the dragon’s tone was mocking as he copied both R’nya’s tone and style of greeting, the rich depth of his voice holding tendrils of amusement as he crept up behind Aradissicath, nostrils flared as he snorted in her face and eyes alight with humour. Great bronze wings ruffled as the dragon settled himself on his hindquarters and wrapped his tail neatly around his feet. Taking his gaze from Aradissicath, Xyreith turned it upon his human, who had opted to stop a few feet away, arms crossed and a subtle aura of amusement lingering around him as he watched Rhaedalyn beeline for the booze.

My thorn, Aradissicath replied without missing a beat as she returned the greeting, lightly teasing the bronze dragon. He wasn’t truly the thorn in her side but the way he quite literally liked to poke at it had earned him the name all the same. They never said much since she believed Xyreith thought it made him a strong and silent type or just plain mysterious and that was fine with her. Once in a while she would fill the void with babble but usually she was content to simply sit near the bronze beast and annoy him with her presence. Tonight, she felt, would be a bit different. They were the stars of the gathering and their personalities wouldn’t let them remain silent too long. For now, Aradissicath only followed Xyreith’s and then R’nya’s gaze to her rider. Rhaedalyn was acting odd, even for her, and she did indeed need people watching her.

She had only been at the party several minutes and already Rhaedalyn was growing uncomfortable with the words of congratulations, the light teasing over who won, and even a few death glares given to her because of the winner. It wasn’t like she picked who won or when it would happen! She already felt like an outsider because of being a Northerner brought in so late into the established community and she knew she was a bit odd compared to the other girls running around but now she felt completely isolated. Girls hated her because she got to sleep with the elusive R’nya. Some men were upset because they didn’t win the flight and gave her glances that said it was clearly her fault and not their own.

The worst part, however, was that one of the people she wanted to run to for comfort and support was also the man that had won the flight and she still wasn’t sure what to do about that now that the flight lust was completely out of her system and she wasn’t so giddy.

Rhaedalyn nearly slinked her way back to Aradissicath and came up short when she saw Xyreith sitting beside the gold dragon. That meant… “Good evening, R’nya,” Rhaedalyn smiled as she spotted the bronzerider but was quickly back to sipping at her drink. Despite her constant sips, the cup was still half full thanks to the strong taste of the alcohol. She wasn’t a drinker and it was hard to get past such a bitter taste no matter what her nerves were doing to her. She had to act normal! Normal would be easy right? It was what she did every day so all she had to do was be polite, giggle, and carry out random conversations. She could do that; she could!

“I’m glad you’re here. Since this is for us, I mean. For our flight. Um, o-our dragons.” Rhaedalyn wanted to smack her forehead for how smooth she was being. She certainly wasn’t nervous or unsure of what to say around R’nya, not at all! Now if only he would believe that, along with everyone else, she’d make it through fine.

If R’nya were anyone else, the desire to laugh would likely have outweighed the ability to remain silent. Luckily, for all involved, R’nya was still R’nya, and laughing was simply not something he allowed himself to indulge in all that much – particularly not in front of so many people. Clearly, there were benefits to flying green dragons that hadn’t been apparent until Xyreith decided it was time to start chasing golden tail again. No one looked twice when you slunk out of a room with a greenrider, but everyone and their firelizard seemed intent on poking their nose in and making sure they saw for themselves that Xyreith had won Aradissicath. On a more human level, all they were interested in was the fact that he had been tangled with Rhaedalyn earlier that day. R’nya resisted the urge to roll his eyes; people needed to get past their desire for petty gossip!

“Relax, my dear.” There was a hint of good-natured teasing lingering just under the surface of the bronzeriders words, undoubtedly missed by any that did not know him as well as some of the goldrider and candidates did. Undoubtedly, the man came across as bland and commanding to anyone else. “They’re celebrating another clutch,” or perhaps they were just celebrating a clutch that wasn’t Krypth’s – the gold flew regularly enough, but her ability to produce decent sized numbers was not so great. Well, R’nya rectified. They were fine for Katila’s lousy population; pride had him hoping Aradissicath would clutch large and well. The need for candidates had him worried she’d clutch at all – to whom would her babies Impress? Most weyrbrats were aging in, but a lot of the Stolen were beginning to get where they were withdrawing from candidacy.

This is not the time for such worries, Sir. The bronze dragon intruded with a banishing touch, sending R’nya’s thoughts scattering without apology as he leaned over to bite Aradissicath lightly, tugging on a head knob lightly so he could drag her head towards him, before letting it go and watching her with a wicked, smug expression. The bronze dragon practically radiated ‘so what are you going to do about it?’ R’nya rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to Rhaedalyn.

Stepping beside the girl, R’nya lightly folded her arm through his own, and turned her back towards the milling people, his other hand resting lightly over the top of her own. He left her drinking hand alone, giving the glass an amused glance. “From what I understand, our charming creatures flew rather well.” He was not too surprised, given Aradissicath’s size and Xyreith’s history. The man was visibly proud of his dragon, but also just as happy with Aradissicath’s performance. “Hopefully there will be enough weyrbrats,” he was in the process of tossing Rhaedalyn a wink when R’nya accidentally tripped himself, jerking on the girl’s arm as he struggled to find his feet; Xyreith squealed in surprise from where he was with Aradissicath, though whether from the gold or R’nya’s thoughts was not immediately apparent to even R’nya.

“My apologises, my lady.” If R’nya’s face was slightly pasty and his breath a little hitched – well, he had almost face planted! Almost taken Rhaedalyn down with him in addition! A cold touch wound down R’nya’s spine and it took effort not twitch; instead, he rolled his shoulders. Relax, Sir. Xyreith’s voice was mild and whispery, the bronze ignoring Aradissicath for a moment as he focused on his rider, eyes a sickly colour of worry as he waited for his rider to pull himself together. But--! No. Worry tomorrow. Not tonight. The dragon waited, then relaxed with a ruffle of his wings as R’nya turned his attention with an amused eyebrow arch upon a fellow bronzerider that had just made a quip about Rhaedalyn making R’nya fall all over himself.

What was Aradissicath going to do about it? That was simple; she smacked Xyreith. She made no movement for three seconds and then sent a paw out to connect with a cheek on the surprisingly successful lighter side as her spatial awareness disability hadn’t acted up on her. She then shot back her own smug look that clearly said that while she was an adorable gold dragon, she wasn’t made of glass and could still hold her own against him.

Rhaedalyn glanced from the ground before them as they walked to R’nya when he made the comment. Why would they need to worry about Weyrbrats? Surely R’nya didn’t think their clutch would be of such a crazy size that they would run out of people eligible to Impress? She didn’t have time to question his statement or find out that he was teasing while being hopeful as they nearly took a tumble. She squeaked and her drink was dropped out of reflex to grab onto something that seemed sturdier – like R’nya. It didn’t matter that he was the one that almost brought them down since in the end, he had kept them upright.

Doing so, however, reminded her of the blush she had given as R’nya linked their arms not moments before. It was something he had done before while escorting her and Kahleena to various places but it seemed so different now. Why though? They were still friends. It shouldn’t have mattered that they slept together since it was for their dragons and what golds and bronzes did. “Hm? Oh. It’s okay, R’nya.” She smiled reassuringly at the bronzerider once her mind caught up to everything and stopped tripping over itself as much as they were currently doing with their feet.

It was because of that as well that Rhaedalyn didn’t fully hear or understand the quip made nearby. “It was definitely my fault,” she added to the acceptance of the apology, deciding even if it was or wasn’t her fault that it was better to let those around them think it was. R’nya had a reputation to maintain! She couldn’t let it be tarnished because he continued to associate with her. From what I have heard, you should speak to B’jin and R’nd about being so oblivious, my dear. Rhaedalyn frowned and turned to look at her dragon, confused by what she meant. What hadn’t she picked up on? People were saying she was at fault for making them trip and it wasn’t all that unlikely to assume such a thing either considering her occasional acts of clumsiness and how often she daydreamed. It’s okay, dear. I still love you exactly as you are.

Xyreith didn’t even try to avoid the gold’s slap to his face, taking the blow without anything more than a blink as he watched her unwaveringly. Really? Was that all she was going to do in response? The bronze dragon’s jaw shifted into an attempt at a wicked grin, teeth visible as he tilted his head and considered Aradissicath seriously with one eye. Clearly, the bronze dragon considered himself the winner of their silent little battle, simply by managing to get Aradissicath to respond so quickly. Xyreith snorted softly at the young gold, and then curled up serenely, eyes turned to watch the gathering. He would go back to annoying Aradissicath, when watching his human flounder wasn’t quite as interesting any more.

R’nya grimaced apologetically when he saw Rhaedalyn’s hand now free from a drink, and its remains smashed upon the ground. With one hand lightly placed on her waist and the other at her elbow, R’nya frowned just slightly as he made sure the girl was firmly on her own two feet and balanced before withdrawing slightly to give her some space; had they always been standing that close? The bronzerider’s expression lightened slightly as he dipped his chin a little. “Nonsense, my lady. Come, we’ll get you a fresh drink.” Maybe he’d get lucky and someone would spike his drink while he was at it, R’nya thought dryly as he greeted another bronzerider before he politely but pointedly steered Rhaedalyn away from the other man.

“Here,” R’nya offered Rhaedalyn a fresh glass of wine, extending the glass to her and waiting patiently for the girl to take it. “That one should be sweeter,” Katilan wine was hardly something anyone desired, and R’nya hadn’t drank since first trying the terrible stuff. He wasn’t much of an alcohol drinker to begin with, but he certainly wasn’t about to drink the terrible stuff Katilan’s were forced to call alcohol. All the same, that glass seemed to come from a better cask, and was mixed with a healthy dose of fruit juice to take the bite out of it. It was undoubtedly enough to completely knock Rhaedalyn’s socks off if she let it, but R’nya would worry about shepherding the drunk goldrider home when it happened, if it happened.

R’nya left the girl to her own devices for a few moments, his attention being caught by another bronzerider; one of the men that had been in his wing when he had been a leader. The conversation was short, and mostly came from the other man, with R’nya nodding a couple of times and adding a mild comment at the end before the other bronzerider smirked and moved off. R’nya frowned slightly after him, but left well enough alone as he turned his attention back to Rhaedalyn with a lowly spoken apology and a subtle glance at her wine glass. An eyebrow arched upwards slightly as R’nya met her eyes. “May I have this dance, my lady?” He held his right hand out invitingly.

Rhaedalyn accepted the glass of wine, though she probably shouldn’t have. She was a light weight but also one that drink regularly, especially since Impressing. Not even half of the last glass had been sipped down and she swore it was already going to her head but at the same time, nerves kept her from refusing. What was wrong with her? Parties were fun and this one was even for her! It was a time to have fun and enjoy herself yet all she could do was work on her glass of wine, trying her best not to chug it down within seconds. It wouldn’t do to be drunk at such a gathering; it’d be so scandalous!

Still, half the glass vanished as she stood awkwardly, watching everyone interact around her as she tried not to look out of place or like she was waiting for R’nya to finish with his friend. He would be finished with his friend, right? They weren’t there together – naturally! They weren’t a couple after all – but it seemed right that they were viewed together that evening given the cause for the celebration. Besides, she didn’t see anyone else she considered a close friend and couldn’t run over to them to keep her company and sane.

“Pardon?” She had been so busy trying to blend in while lost in her fears that she had missed R’nya’s question as he returned to her. Rhaedalyn glanced down and saw his hand and for a moment it still didn’t register over what he was asking her, almost assuming he wanted to escort her somewhere again. It was only the swell of a song starting up that made her connect all the dots in the right order and nodded as she nibbled on her lower lip. “I would love to dance.” The glass was set down on a table and Rhaedalyn placed her hand in R’nya’s. She did love dancing but never really had dance partners. R’nya made his rounds through all of his Golden Girls at gatherings to make sure they all had a proper dance and even V’zire could only humour her so much since he wasn’t a huge fan of dancing. Any chance she had to dance with a partner was taken and Rhaedalyn found herself managing to smile amongst her worries for the night.

R’nya smiled gently at Rhaedalyn, the expression fleeting and gone almost as soon as it had appeared upon lips and within pale eyes. The bronzerider waited patiently for Rhaedalyn to put the pieces together, his hand never wavering from where he was holding it out and blue-grey eyes watching her face with the same bemused affection he normally watched the girl with; such a dreamer.

“Wonderful,” he murmured as Rhaedalyn chewed on her lip and set her glass down, the bronzerider’s fingers holding her hand gently before turning to lead her towards the main area that had been cleared for dancing. He paused when he reached a spot for them, turning to bow slightly to the girl before stepping into her space; hands finding a place to rest lightly on her waist after setting the hand he’d been holding lightly upon his shoulder. “That’s better,” he teased, not referencing their new stance (though it could clearly be taken that way, all considered) but rather the reappearance of a smile upon the young goldrider’s lips.

When he was sure she was ready, R’nya’s weight shifted and he lead her into the dance. “You worry too much, my dear,” he was teasing still, tone light and amused but quiet enough not to be overheard by those dancing around them. “What is it that has upset you, Rhaedalyn?” R’nya seriously doubted she was fretting over what he was stressing about, but perhaps if the girl spoke to him about whatever it was, he’d be able to sooth her fears nonetheless. She was supposed to be enjoying the evening, not getting caught up in her over active imagination!

“Nothing!” Rhaedalyn replied quickly, likely too quickly, and tried to give R’nya a reassuring smile. The bronzerider was far too clever and observant for her to pull anything over on him but there was still the hope that he wouldn’t pursue the issue if she seemed genuinely okay with everything that had happened. No way was she going to confess to being all out of sorts over sleeping with her friend and then having the entire population of the Weyr know how she spent her morning. He didn’t even need to know that she was worried over what people might think of her and how Z’ia might not want her since she had been with someone else. Maybe he wasn’t a fan of R’nya and wouldn’t like that he had won the flight.

R’nya didn’t need to know that even his nonchalant attitude over the event was disconcerting. Rhaedalyn couldn’t tell how it had affected him and certainly didn’t want to ask. She wasn’t sure what answer she’d want anyway. Did she want R’nya to be a basket case with her? Did she want him to be a steady rock? Did she want to know why he was in either one of those positions? It was better to simply not know any of the answers.

A single glance up at R’nya’s face and Rhaedalyn knew she wouldn’t get away with her deflection of his question and had to give him something to soothe for her. As she stared at the front of his shirt once again as they moved in time to the music, she finally thought of something and felt it was enough of the truth to fool him but not major enough to ruin anything. “It’s just odd to have everyone celebrating what happened this morning. I am glad for it as well though. Aradissicath and Xyreith are wonderful and do deserve the spotlight.” The comment about Katilans knowing her sex life and getting drunk because of it went unsaid but no doubt R’nya knew her well enough to grab onto that fact anyway. She wanted to sigh in defeat but that would definitely give her away; so she focused on dancing and not stepping on any toes.

Eyebrows arched upwards, immediately, in response to Rhaedalyn’s far too swift response. He had expected her to give some type of hand-wave answer, but he had also expected her to take a little more care with the delivery. Her instant and swift attempt to convince him that nothing was worrying her did exactly the opposite and R’nya’s lips pursed just a little – barely noticeably – and he studied Rhaedalyn’s face carefully. He resisted the urge to smile as the gears started turning in the girl’s mind, the bronzerider also fighting the desire to sigh softly in annoyance; she was clearly trying to find a middle ground – or a believable lie – and he really did just want the truth.

“I see,” he murmured softly, watching Rhaedalyn carefully when she glanced up at him, eyebrows furrowing slightly when her gaze dropped back to his chest again. He sighed softly, the gentle sound probably revealing more to Rhaedalyn about his own floundering in the current situation than he would ever display to anyone watching their interaction. He had no idea how best to handle the current situation – though that was certainly not something the world around them needed to be aware of!

“This morning is the talk of the day,” he murmured, keeping his voice low and just for Rhaedalyn, “maybe tomorrow too, but unlikely any longer. Something else will happen to distract them.” He waited until he could catch Rhaedalyn’s gaze before continuing, voice still a low and private murmur. “Go about life as you usually would, my dear, and their attention will wander all the sooner.” Pale eyes studied Rhaedalyn with concern, and just the barest hint of sadness; he hated to see her so upset. She should be thrilling in her dragon’s upcoming motherhood and the brightness such an event would bring to the Weyr, not fretting about people and their over active imaginations.

Like yours? Xyreith input on a sly whisper against the edge of R’nya’s mind, gently bringing forth the memories R’nya had been trying to push aside. He enjoyed watching his rider squirm, and the bronzerider was certainly squirming as his eyebrows suddenly furrowed and a mild flush climbed up his neck and over his face. “I’m sorry, my dear,” leaning forward, R’nya pressed a light kiss to Rhaedalyn’s cheek, breathing a soft, “gunna kill Xy,” in her ear before slipping around her and almost (but not quite) running across the grounds to get to his dragon.

Rhaedalyn knew R’nya spoke the truth. She had seen such reactions in the Weyr herself over the turns. After all, she loved gossip and was almost ashamed to say how deep her nose could be in the business of others when she was caught up in some of the juicier tales. It was only a matter of time before everyone found something else to talk about and if she didn’t feed them anything else with the way she acted, she’d be left alone all the quicker. In the end, the event hadn’t been too horrible either. R’nya was her friend and he had been wonderful and considerate of her. He didn’t demand anything of her then and he wasn’t now either. They were still friends and belonged to themselves and not each other. She could go back to courtship – which was how she saw her time with the bluerider – with Z’ia and the guilt wouldn’t be there as a roadblock.

The young lady looked up with a smile but suddenly frowned in confusion when she saw eyebrows furrowing. The chance to ask what was wrong or to wonder if all of her thoughts were wrong was never given as words were whispered and a kiss given. “Odd,” Rhaedalyn commented on the breath of a whisper as she watched R’nya nearly run away. What had gotten into the bronzerider to leave him so out of sorts? He never spoke in contradictions or slang, and she had never heard R’nya give Xyreith a nickname before. It was truly odd to hear all of those words out of his mouth.

It was tempting to go after him and see what was wrong and find out if she could help but Rhaedalyn stayed where she was. There was the chance that she had done something wrong and seeking him out wouldn’t help but if she gave chase, it’d only make for more rumours spreading about them. She had just decided not to assist those! So she didn’t give chase but smiled at the bronzerider. She’d definitely ask him about it later or at least lightly tease him about the words. Did he always speak like that when he was alone and he put on an act of proper speech when near his Golden Girls? It was a mystery and Rhaedalyn knew she’d think about it a lot during the coming days, making up theories and having a giggle with Aradissicath.

For now, she wanted to find Z’ia and satisfy her curiosity that he wasn’t mad over the flight. It was something they would have to deal with if they were to have a relationship. As much as she loved Aveleth, he was still blue and didn’t stand much a chance in winning Aradissicath’s flights. It wouldn’t matter; R’nya may have won her in a flight but Z’ia owned her heart.
