The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Casa had been looking for a good time to work on the little song B'jin had taught her, but there wasn't much time as she had come to realize. Between her adventures with Quenym, the never-ending list of chores that seemed to continuously pile up, and regularly attending candidate classes, she didn't seem to be able to find enough time in the day to eat and spend time with the 'lizards, let alone play the guitar. But this morning seemed to have provided her a good chance.

She hadn't slept well, and as such had arisen early to eat and just get the day started. As soon as she finished wolfing down a bowl of hot cereal, she'd headed right to the craft hall. Once there, her feet led her right to the wall of instruments. She carefully took down the one B'jin had said she could use, running her fingers over the wood with a satisfied smile. He'd trusted her with an instrument - a rare treat - and she was going to prove to him that his time hadn't been wasted! She really wanted to impress him.

Taking a deep breath, she ran her fingers over the strings experimentally. The sound was mostly correct, but something was sour. Scrunching her face up, she carefully plucked at each string, trying to find the string that wasn't quite right. She sat there, going over each one with a mixture of inexperience and frustration, before she thought she might finally have gotten it right. Nodding to herself, she begin to pluck through and practice just the notes she knew that were a part of the song - she'd get to the melody in a bit. But for now, she had to know these notes so that the actual melody part would be easy. She settled in, crouched over the guitar with a look of determination on her face.

V’ler typically didn’t go to the Craft Hall since it was full of annoying children and people in general. Still, trips were occasionally made when he was in need of parchment and didn’t feel like making his own or didn’t have the time to do so. He was also sometimes suckered into teaching a class, which, thankfully, hadn’t been the case that day. He managed to sneak in unnoticed and grabbed a few pieces of parchment before making his way through the building for his quick escape.

Someone murdering a guitar, however, froze the Harper in his tracks. What a horrible sound! Was someone’s infant occupying themselves on one of the precious instruments? Mood suddenly soured as he thought about someone messing with his guitar that was always safely stored in his hut, V’ler went to check on who was touching things and possibly about to damage something. He frowned when a girl was spotted, hunched over the instrument and deep in thought. She seemed like she was genuinely trying to practice and get better but his musician’s ears were bleeding from the attempt all the same.

“If you’re trying to invent a new note, we don’t need it, especially one that is so pitchy and squeaky.” Just because he had been trained in the delicate art of negotiations and even teaching young children, didn’t mean V’ler practiced diplomacy on a daily basis. He had never asked his Masters to let him teach and didn’t enjoy listening to Lords bicker either. He spoke his mind and didn’t see the need to be gentle with the truth.

As she went back to tweaking the strings, pausing in the practice of the little tune, the sound of a somewhat cruel voice caught her attention. She stopped immediately, her eyes guility sliding from the guitar to the man standing in front of her, looking down at her in irritation and discomfort. She hadn't realized the guitar was that far out of tune...it wasn't something she was able to practice every single day, and she was definitely new to the instrument.

His words somehow struck her, and it made her feel awful, as well as angry. It hadn't been great, but she hadn't meant to be out of tune! It galled her that some riders would rather snidely comment instead of helping correct issues like this. She curled her lip, carefully balancing the guitar over her lap before beginning to fiddle with the strings, trying once again to start the tuning process from the beginning.

After a couple seconds on the first string, she winced and noted to herself that while it had sounded okay before, it definitely wasn't as good as it could be. She slowly turned it, cringing when the note became strangled, before trying to turn it again. It sounded a little better this time, but she still wasn't there. She frowned from the guitar to the rider, before just stopping all together. "So I can't tune it. B'jin didn't really give me much lesson on how to do that - maybe you can help, since you seem even less fond of the sounds I'm producing than I am."

He was going to have to talk to B’jin about the quality of lessons he was giving out. Then again, the fault may not have lied there but with the amount of time he had to work with or the student herself. There were too many factors to immediately pick out the issue beyond the girl was going to give him a headache with what she was currently doing. “I never said the fault lied with the guitar.” With a barely audible sigh, V’ler waved for the guitar to be handed over to him. Watching beginners hold an instrument of any sort was always a little scary but when they tried to tune or correct the bindings, it made him nervous as he waited for something to break.

With deft fingers, V’ler made a few quick adjustments based off of what he heard from Casa’s attempt. He strummed the guitar once, listening close to each note that came out, turned one knob just a smidge, strummed again, and nodded in satisfaction. It wasn’t the best guitar Katila had to offer but V’ler imagined that was why the girl was playing it. B’jin would have pointed it out as a good one to practice on.

Since it was easier to show and tell the ‘brat what she did wrong instead of waiting for the lecture from B’jin later on for being so cruel to an eager student, V’ler crouched down and made sure Casa had a good view. “Finger placement is also key, as is the pressure applied. If you hold it too loosely then you’ll have a sloppy sound.” V’ler demonstrated the best he could by breaking practically a lifetime of proper habits to show what he was talking about so Casa had something to listen for. He then held the guitar properly and strummed the chords again to show the difference.

When he was certain Casa was keeping an eye on his fingers, V’ler shifted them all down a fraction and played once more. “If your fingers are off in where they should be, by even a little, you’ll hit the wrong notes.” He played a few bars of a popular song properly and then with slipped fingers to show how sour notes could appear when they were least expected. The guitar was then passed back to Casa and V’ler stood up, clearly showing that his stint as a teaching Harper was over for the day.

Casa relinquished the guitar to the impatient and probably irritated rider with a wince, sitting on her hands as she watched. He seemed very capable, very well attuned to the instrument. He turned the knobs this way and that way, minute little movements that didn't seem that different to her until she started to focus, watching in silence as he listened and adjusted.

What had taken her a couple minutes seemed to fly by in seconds for him, and the next thing she knew, it sounded beautiful and strummed out a light, fluid sound. So he was right...the error was in the user, not the instrument. That one didn't sound nearly so pretty as B'jin's had, but it still had a mellow tone that made her happy when he strummed it. She took careful note to review the way he had turned just so to try to get it to sound like that...Harpers had Turns of practice, she had only a couple hours here or there. She made a note to try and practice more.

When V'ler didn't hand the instrument back right away, she took that to mean there would be more to this impromptu lesson he had decided to grace her with. He wasn't nearly so kind or patient as B'jin, but he did seem very, very capable...maybe that's why she'd never seen him help to teach lessons. She was willing to bet he made beautiful music when he entertained, however.

As he crouched beside her and showed her the difference in the pressures on the strings and the exact positioning of the fingers, she saw more and more glaring errors on her part. It was hard to remember to keep each finger just so when there wasn't a teacher there. And the amount of pressure on each string definitely made a big difference. She would have to start practicing completely differently, if she wanted it to sound anything like it did when it was in V'ler's hands.

She took the guitar back as it was passed to her, once again taking her seat and leaning over. For now, she merely practiced mimicing how his fingers had sat, as well as pushing on and letting go of the strings, to try to get a feel for the right kind of pressure. She had a lot of work to do if she was going to make that little song sound pretty. "Thank you," she murmured, head bent intently over the fretboard as she worked on her finger's positioning.

V’ler grabbed the sheets of parchment he had stuffed under his arm while dealing with the guitar and gave them a quick look over. It didn’t seem like he had wrinkled them, which wasn’t really an issue since they would only be used for lyrics or new note taking for his own records but he was a bit of a paper snob and liked crisp sheets to work on. Once he was satisfied with the quality, his attention returned to the girl and how she was trying to adjust with his tips.

He silently observed her, noting a small improvement already. At least she was good at listening and following directions and suggestions. V’ler still wouldn’t write her off as a prodigy and instant master of the instrument but she was on her way to playing the song B’jin had taught her without too many cringe-worthy moments. Considering what he had walked in on, that was a good enough start.

V’ler got to his feet and was about to walk away without comment but a part of his old teaching Harper side came back to him and he sighed softly to himself. “Already better,” he complimented, at least in his mind it was a compliment. Who knew how a young girl would take it. It didn’t really matter since he was already headed out the exit, having gotten what he came for and did a bonus act of kindness in the process.
