Irritation pulled the corners of her mouth down as she slapped the knife against the board. She was stuck in the kitchens on chore duty. Duty that was supposed to end over an hour ago but no. Someone had suggested pies for dessert. She could barely cook much less bake a sharding pie. She'd told the beastly woman behind her that she couldn't bake a pie to safe her life but the woman had insisted she learn. After all it was a womanly hobby, the baking of pies. Three burnt pies and two burnt fingers were all she had to show for several hours of work. She detested pies. She would never eat a pie again. She glared over her shoulder at the woman, who shooed her with chubby hands. Yeah like flapping her hands was going to make Ameris move faster - which it did, but she'd never admit it.

She sighed as she scraped the last of the fruits off the knife and into the waiting pie crust. It was full of various fruits and berries and if this one actually turned out would taste well. Hopefully anyway. Too bad she couldn't slip some kind of laxative or some such into it and be sure the frowning woman behind her got that exact piece. Hilarity would ensue she was sure but she couldn't take the chance that a rider got that selection. Though.. The hilarity from that would be tenfold. No. Even at the chance of some fun it wouldn't be anything good. Probably more kitchen detail. With a growl Ameris shoved the pan into the brick oven as Mud chittered from his position on a chair.

She slammed the door of the oven as she turned to shoo Mud from the chair so she could sit. The woman in charge of her gave her a death glare straight from hell as she sank into the cushion. She resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at the woman as she allowed her head to tip back. Baking was exhausting. She'd much rather be at home, playing in the dirt than baking pies in a sweltering kitchen.

Indivara was hungry. It was a rather unfortunate result of her current predicament, and between it and the alternating desire to barf all over anything, everything, and people – Indivara was in a particularly perpetual foul mood. Most notably, a fouler mood than she was generally known for being in. Some people glowed when they were pregnant; Indivara looked more like a storm cloud, with dark eyes and a pale complexion that promised thunderstorms at the slighted provocation.

As per the nature of a Weyr, as soon as Indivara had put the pieces together about what exactly the issue was; the entire population seemed to know about it. Dragons were gossips, and Krypth was not the least bit innocent. Indivara was quite sure the gold had taken a perverse delight in informing every dragon (except greens, as her prejudice against them dictated) that her Indivara was quite on the way to being a mother. Indivara was quite sure she would have throttled Krypth if the lump of golden fat wasn’t too big for her hands to wrap around. Abandoning the gold and her rider – who had wanted to immediately take Indivara on as many trips between as she could for about the next ten weeks, Indivara had spent it in close proximity to her friends.

Time that was mostly taken to, an event that wasn’t nearly as popular as it used to be, since she was pretty sure each and every one of the guys was convinced she would break if they so much as looked at her wrong. To give them points, Indivara was still vividly surprised they spent any time with her now at all. The fact that there was no possible way any of them could be the father was probably the leading reason, the fact that she couldn’t chase after them to hit them without her stomach rebuking her with physical results was likely another. Indivara wasn’t nearly as scary when she spent most her time hunched over buckets or against building walls.

She routinely promised to extract her eternal revenge upon their smug arses when she was capable of extracting it, however, promises Indivara swore to live up to ten fold! Now, hwoever, was not one of those times as the girl slunk into the kitchens with dark eyes and flared nostrils. The sweet smell of pie was too hard to resist for the young woman, and she crept along the outskirts cautiously with darting blue eyes and a contorted face, her scars intensifying the scowl of disdain as a child tottered by her path. Every reminder made her want to scream, and seeing other people’s brats was hardly on Indivara’s hot list. She was just pleased she’d been too ill to actively be put on crèche duty. Damn that to Faranth’s arse!

It was Psh that noticed the little brown first, and glided on agile wings to join him, chittering a greeting. Indivara turned her gaze to follow the young gold, huffing when she saw her socialising with some brown. On her shoulder, Blood Sucker rumbled out his displeasure and was rewarded with a gentle stroke down the spine from Indivara, who, grumbling, turned to follow the firelizard. “Psh!” The sound, an abbreviation of the firelizard’s name and a compromise with Jada, came out hissed more like an attention-seeking hiss than it was meant to.

“Shouldn’t you be working?” Indivara’s words were dry as she eyed the elder girl sprawled out in the chair, reaching out to snatch Psh from where she was fluttering around in the air and hold her irritably. Taking her disdainful gaze from Ameris, Indivara peered at the bench, searching for something edible. Preferably in the shape of a well-cooked pie. Not seeing anything, cold blue eyes turned back to the other girl, irritation renewed at the lack of pilfer-able food.

Wordier than I'd intended, sorry ><

Mud squeaked as the gold firelizard winged towards him. New friends! He liked new friends. Never mind that he'd most definitely met this one at some point in his life. He was a simple creature with the worse memory on Pern. The little brown chirped and chattered as he took flight to circle around the gold as she came to greet him. Without opening her eyes Ameris's head tilted towards the sound of the not so quiet hiss. She recognized that hiss. Indivara. Great. Just what she needed. The mouthiest woman in all of Katila. Probably came to steal something, Ameris was sure.

Mud squawked, a bit indignant as Indivara snatched the gold midair. He had been playing with her! With a chitter he turned to settle on the knee of Ameris. She absentmindedly reached out to stroke the brown along his back, earning her a soft croon. Her brow shot up at the words that reached her ears. "Shouldn't you be puking?" she asked, her voice nearly as dry as Indivara's. Oh yes. Ameris had heard of her pregnancy and didn't feel sorry for the ragged morning sickness she suffered. Ameris herself hadn't suffered from the infliction so could offer no words of encouragement, had she wanted to. Which she didn't.

Her head fell forward as her eyes opened to watched Indivara scan the counters. Yup. She'd come to steal something. Maybe she'd fish around for the burnt pies and offer them to her. The matron hadn't tossed the out yet and Ameris would love to see if Indivara's pregnancy hunger would make her eat them. Probably shouldn't. Then she'd have to listen to R'nya lecture. Which would not be a highlight of her day but could be worth it. "There's nothing for you to steal today, Indivara" she said fighting the sneer that laced her voice, "Don't you have better things to do that don't involve pilfering from the kitchens?"

They do that sometimes hahaha. For some reason I can't seem to get Ameris to be well.. Nice. Also R'nya seems like one to lecture. I hope you don't mind that I added that.

An irritable look was shot at the brown Firelizard, Indivara's lip twotching with irritation as she immediately dismissed him as both useless and untrained. Her own Firelizards training was questionable at best, and certainly not to a degree that other people would consider them well behaved. Indivara, however, was every hypocritical.

The sour expression only deepened at Ameris' quick snap back, Indivara's eyes flashing with disdain and not a small amount of angry irritation. "It strikes at random," Indivara replied sweetly, turning her malicious gaze onto the elder girl with the clear, smug promise to aim any projectiles at the other. She'd found most people for I'll at the thought of sick; actually hitting them with the sour liquid had proven to be both disgusting and hilarious.

"Of course there is," Indivara snorted, amused and hardly put off by Ameris' returned attitude. It was, after all, a very large and very busy kitchen that catered to a very large population of hungry Dragonriders - a horrifying number of whom couldn't feed themselves without it.

"Kitchen always has food." It didn't always have Indivara-favorable staff present, however. She should have coerced Ryvian into stealing something for her; he likely would have demanded a kiss, but that was easy enough to avoid (a heavy dry heave would do the job nicely) or she could pay up, if she wanted something she knew he'd have to work to steal. But she'd been feeling particularly self sufficient - enough so that asking, demanding or otherwise wheedling help out of someone else was unacceptable.

"Of course," she added, eyes once more seeking out food that was just dying to make a new home in her stomach. There had to be something, she could smell the yummies, and the plate of roast wherry that went walking past was plucked as the girl deftly avoided a slap across the knuckles with a smirk. "I'll get to those things." A pointedly arch look was given to the other girl.

Ameris resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at the sour look on Indivara's face. The girl was much too defensive in her facial expressions for Ameris's taste and if the woman didn't know better she'd wonder if it was a front for something quite different. She didn't particularly care to find out either so she didn't poke at it. Perhaps one day - when pigs flew - Ameris would get to the bottom of Indivara's prickly nature but for now she just shrugged at the sweetly spewed words. "Don't think I've never been puked on. Or shit on for that matter," she herself smiled just as sweet, "Babies tend to leave a bit of puke and crap in their wake."

Ameris was a very hands on mother, unwilling to really leave the care of her son to another. She had rarely left him at the creche and only then when she was on chore duty. He lit up her life like nothing else could and Ameris didn't trust the workers of the creche with his safety. She probably should have allowed it anyway with no argument but she just couldn't do it. She had lost her mother at a key moment in her life and her father had been absent for all of the important things and she refused to do the same to Rislan.

She raised a brow and rolled her eyes as the girl gave her a triumphant look as she filched a piece or three of roasted wherry from the passing plate. "Very mature, Indivara. You know.. Asking for a bit probably would work a whole lot better. Probably be less painful too," she said dryly. Mud cocked his head as he watched the other girl with intent eyes. He had a thought that perhaps a bit of wherry would be fantastic and just as he bunched to leap and snatch the bit out of Indivara's hand, Ameris slapped her own against him effectively halting his movements. The little brown squeaked and chattered as his wings flapped to get away, the movements futile. Shaking her head all Ameris could do was chuckle under her breath as it never occurred to him to blink between.

She looked at Indivara again and her previous thought wormed its way back into her mind with insidious grace. "I've some pie if you think your stomach can handle the sweets," she said oh so nicely, "I can get some for you and find a chair to sit on. After all a girl in your condition shouldn't be on her feet for so long."

“Not my issue,” Indivara shrugged, not at all phased by comments about baby shit and spit up. She had absolutely no desire to keep the brat once it was free of her body, and failed to understand why anyone would want a wriggling little fart monster at any rate. Some other stupid bitch with maternal instincts could take it on. If it were possible, Indivara would have transferred the little bastard already, but she was disgustingly aware of the inability to do so. Humans should lay eggs, like the dragons; then she could dump the little fucker on Krypth already and be done with it. “I have better things to do, than wipe baby arse.”

A smug look was returned to Ameris, not the slightest bit phased by her comment, or the manner in which it was delivered. “Where is the fun in that?” She asked in amusement, eyebrows lifting and contorting the scars stretched across her face with the movement. Blue eyes shifted to look at the firelizard on the other girl’s knee, before dismissing him effortlessly. Blood hissed irritably, scolding the other firelizard with the same disdainful attitude as Indivara often expressed for everyone.

Her smug expression, however, shifted suspiciously and she watched as Ameris voiced her offer, blue eyes narrowing and eyebrows furrowing irritably. She didn’t, for a moment, believe there was an ounce of sincerity in that sugary sweet voice. “Uh-huh,” Indivara drawled slowly, still eyeing Ameris distrustfully. On her shoulder, Blood’s lips drew back in a snarl as he glared at Ameris; in the girl’s arms, Psh mewed pitifully and nuzzled closer to Indivara’s chest. “Your chair looks comfortable though. Move your fat arse and hand it over.”

The more Indivara spoke about her pregnancy the more she reminded Ameris - and rather painfully at that - of her self during her own pregnancy. She hadn't wanted Rislan. Hadn't wanted to be pregnant and had despised every minute of it and counted down the days until she could pawn him off on the creche women. But that had all changed and for the better. Some how though, Ameris seriously doubted that the same would be said for Indivara. But then again she could be wrong.

Fat arse, her arse. And the hell if she would give up her chair to Indivara. Never mind the damn thing wasn't cushioned and was probably the least comfortable one in all the kitchen, it was the principle of the matter. She motioned for a girl to come over to her. When the small dark child reached her, Ameris whispered into her ear, bidding the girl to bring one of the burnt pies - preferably the one that didn't look burnt - and a cushioned chair for Indivara. A single raised brow at the girls protests sent her scurrying.

"Now why would I need to actually get off my fat arse, as you so nicely put it, to give you my chair when another can simply be brought?" she asked before waving a hand at the approaching girl, "And here it is. A nice chair and pie, just for sweet little old you." The chair the girl brought was a sturdy one with a large multicolored cushion and low back. It was actually rather comfortable and Ameris damned her pride. She could have simple traded chairs, and gotten the better out of it, but no. She smiled when she saw the pie the child had brought.

Perfectly flakey and perfectly golden brown on the outside but a burnt gooey mess on the inside. The matron had been pretty disgusted with that one. Ameris was vaguely proud of the fact that she had some how managed not to burn the outside but had turned the inside into berry flavored runner crap. "Sit, sit!" she motioned towards the chair, "Now that pie's just for you, so enjoy it." She would have to keep a sharp eye on the girl if she decided to puke every where. Baby puke was one thing. A fully grown girl's puke, an entirely different one.

Indivara’s suspicious expression and guarded caution did not shift in the slightest as Ameris summoned a child to her, and then set the child scurrying off. The explanation as to what she’d just been up to did not win her any points at all, and Indivara crossed her arms over her chest, scowling down at the elder girl irritably. She didn’t believe for even a moment that Ameris had any good intentions, but Indivara was having difficulty figuring out just what her angle could be.

The combined title of sweet and old had Inidvara staring at Ameris with an eye roll. If she was old, that would make Ameris ancient, surely. And sweet? What drugs was the woman on to think Indivara was sweet? The sickly sweet tone was still setting off Indivara’s alarms, and she was clearly reluctant as she inched over to sit on the chair, eyeing Ameris distrustfully and with great irritation. She was of half a mind to simply storm out of the area, but her stomach wouldn’t let her. She was hungry, and she wasn’t prepared to leave without being fed.

The pie was taken just as distrustfully from the child as Indivara’s cold blue eyes studied the child’s face, the girl refusing to meet her gaze did little to reassure Indivara and she watched the child scamper off. Narrowed blue eyes turned to glare at Ameris, lips pursed as she pointedly ignored the sweet smell of the pie, plate resting neatly on her thighs. “What are you playing at?” Indivara’s voice was nearly a growl, but she knew Ameris was up to something, and she was half expecting the chair to give out under her, someone to dump a bucket of water over her head, or the pie to be shoved into her face. Something, she was up to something!

Blood shifted on her shoulder, peering at Ameris from under stray strands of Indivara’s hair, assorted portions being tugged free from the usually tight braid she wore it pulled back in. Psh landed lightly on her other shoulder, her golden tail looping around Indivara’s neck to compliment the dark midnight blue of Blood’s, the little gold ignoring the grumpy blue firelizard’s hiss when she joined him. Indivara ignored them both, gaze never once leaving Ameris’ face, though her fingers picked at the pastry, nibbling on small pieces as she waited for an answer.

Ameris sat with a bemused expression on her face. The girl was suspicious and indecisive. And rightly so. Ameris usually wasn't one to try a bit like this but there was just something about the other girls attitude that rubbed her the wrong way. She'd done nothing to her to deserve any bit of animosity or disrespect. Well.. She had been a bit harsh at the beginning of their conversation but damn it, Indivara started it. It would be her excuse too, if R'nya found out about her little trick on the chit, provided of course the girl actually ate the pie and threw up all over the kitchen. If she didn't.. Well no one had to know, right?

She smirked as Indivara inched her way over to the chair the girl had brought. With a quick thought, Ameris shooed the girl away before her down cast eyes place any more guilt on the whole situation. Her smirk quickly turned into a bright smile at Indivara's question, "Why, Indivara, what makes you think I'm up to something?" she asked , "Do nice things not happen to you often enough for you to recognize the signs?"

Mud squeaked under Ameris solid palm. He watched the pretty gold wrap herself around her bonded's shoulder with an utter fascination that was not very usual of the tiny brown. He wanted to play with that pretty gold. Play until he dropped, it would be so much fun! He squirmed to be let go but Ameris's hand held fast. Ameris nodded politely as the girl started picking at the pie, "Come now, Indivara! It's not going to bite you!" She was going to get in so much trouble for this.

This is an extremely entertaining thread.
Also I had to look up metaplaying! Makes you work a bit harder lol!

Indivara never shifted her gaze from Ameris’ face, staring, glaring, waiting to see what it was the other woman was up to. The girl refused to accept that Ameris might be genuine in her seat fetching and food supplying. Indivara would be hard pressed to believe even her best friends would be acting in genuine concern or affection for her in such a situation, so to believe that someone she didn’t get along with was simply being nice… Indivara was quite positive such a thing was not even possible.

“Nothing good comes from people like you,” Indivara responded snidely, peeling off a length of pastry and nibbling on it. Her gaze never left Ameris’ face, cold blue eyes hard and determined to figure out what angle it was the other woman was playing. Unfortunately, while Indivara could dig up some random gossip she’d heard about the other girl, she wasn’t able to bring up anything substantial. She had no idea why Ameris would be being nice to her, and couldn’t see how the other could be gaining anything from being nice to her. However, nor could she see how or what it was Ameris would get by being mean or cruel.

“I am not so sure,” Indivara snipped, sneering at Ameris, before lowering her gaze to scowl at the pie resting so innocently on the plate, on her thighs. It was still steaming slightly, notably from the area that the girl had peeled a length of pastry from; the insides of the pie were slowly oozing out and Indivara stuck her pointer finger in it cautiously, careful of burning herself. Withdrawing her finger, Indivara shoved it in her mouth, expression thoughtful, before twisting comically as she paused dramatically, frozen.

The girl started shaking, tiny little tremors that rippled down her slender form. It seemed a lifetime before she lifted wide, blue eyes to stare at Ameris. An almost feral fear pinched the expression, and her voice was a hoarse, horrified whisper. “It moved.” She hadn’t imagined it, she knew that, a fact that was proven true a moment later when she felt the movement again, the girl freezing in comical terror, barely breathing as she held her body ridged, waiting for it to stop.

Her eyes narrowed at the snide comment. People like her? What exactly did that mean? She wasn’t normally mean or cruel. She might not like everyone but she didn’t go out of her way to beat them down or make them cry – she had on occasion done so during childhood. People like her indeed.. “People like me? And what, exactly, does that mean?” she demanded. She hated being lumped into generic groups with other people, especially with people she probably couldn’t stand.

She resisted the urge to sneer back, pasting a tiny smile on her lips instead. She would come out of this either covered in puke, hating Indivara with a passion or feeling horrible and actually liking the little twit. Which would probably end in all sorts of cat fights and trouble. She watched the girl in front of her stick her finger into the pie and bring it to her mouth and tensed in preparation for the spewing.

Her eyes winced and her shoulder hunched as Indivara’s face twisted and she came to an abrupt stop. Did that little twit girl not get a burnt pie? Was this one of the ones the matron had used as an example for Ameris to follow? She was going to kill that little girl. Her eyes shot open and widen slightly as Indivara stared at her with large blue eyes. It moved? What the hell did that mean? “What are you talking about Indivara? It’s a goddamn pie! Pies don’t move!” she hissed at the girl. Pies didn’t move. Was she trying to play some trick on Ameris by swinging it around on her? Moving.. Moving.. Ameris’s own eyes widen in horror when it dawned on her what exactly Indivara was talking about.

"Make it stop!" It was a terrified whine, a sound Indivara was quite sure she'd never made in her whole life and certainly not something she would have gone out of her way to suddenly put on display for Ameris, but the sensation and the knowledge behind the very real movements of the developing child in her belly was causing the girl to tremble in terror. She whimpered, then froze solid - albeit a trembling frozen - when the movements did, indeed, stop. Her breath was low, and unsteady as she waited, refusing to move.

"I can't! do this!" It was meant to be a thought, not a barely audible mew of her clear distress. She wasn't meant to do this. She wasn't someone designed for having babies; she wasn't someone who wanted to be a mother - temporarily or permanently - and she did not like this body sharing thing! Her body was broken and damaged and scarred and so far from beautiful, but it was her's!

Psh gave a soft croon and nuzzled Indivara's cheek, but the girl ignored her Firelizard, fighting the urge to cry and refusing to add that to the list of awful things the early pregnancy had already done to ruin her life and her reputation. Blood Sucker, after giving Psh a dirty look, nuzzled against Indivara's other cheek, and was rewarded with a soothing pay. He gave Psh a smug look, but the little gold ignored him as she curled lovingly around Indivara's neck.

Indivara gave a shaky sigh, and broke off another piece of crust to nibble on, still looking far from relaxed. Her eyes were wide, anxious and pinched at the corners with fear of the unknown. How often would that happen? Indivara knew about as much about pregnancy as an toddler, and had never invested any thought in the subject beyond 'avoid it'; girl talk was something Jada usually tried to initiate, and something Indivara usually fled from. Fuck that bullshit.

Ameris started sharply at the whine that came from Indivara. Indivara whining? Now she'd seen everything. The plaintiveness of the sound tugged at her, her blasted maternal (these were new) instincts demanding she make the girl in front of her feel better about the situation. Ameris frowned. "You can't make it stop, Indivara. It just happens," she said gruffly. She could remember her own pregnancy and how much she had hated every minute of it. At the first flutter of movement she had felt, she'd thought something was going to burst from her with a ferocity that made a wher look timid. It didn't and she'd survived, though she complained and whined - much like Indivara - until the birth of Rislan. How she didn't miss it.

All thoughts of maternal flew out the window when Indivara insisted she couldn't do it. With a snort she responded with a, "Of course you can't." Indivara was much to full of herself from what Ameris had gleaned about her. Much to involved and probably the least loving woman she'd every met. Just as well the girl left her child in the creche and forgot about it.

Looking at her again, her previous pity came back full swing. The girls eyes were wide, whether with utter terror or wonder who could really guess. "It'll happen again. You get used to it," she started before shrugging, "Usually when they start moving the sickness goes away, so I suppose something could be said for it." She tried to be reassuring, tried to make it sound not so bad, and tried to make the movements something to look forward to but she failed miserably. She just couldn't do it. Aside from the delightful little being that came from it, Ameris wouldn't wish pregnancy on her worst enemy. And a girl barely out of childhood? Definitely not the best of mother materials. Sometimes she curse D'ren's decree that all woman would birth a child before standing. It had been a ridiculous demand and had thrust to many young girls into the motherhood role. She shook her head at the thought as she stroke the little brown body under her hand.
