S'kef closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair, a fresh glass of wine gripped lightly in his hand. It was quiet now. J'ver had slipped off to bed minutes before, his slender form disappearing down the darkened hallway and leaving the brownrider alone. Their romantic little dinner date had gone on for quite a while, a habit which was becoming  more and more common for the pair. S'kef certainly loved spending time with his mate, but there was also a pragmatic purpose. S'kef wanted the Weyr to grow used to seeing them together, and to grow used to seeing them linger in the dining hall until late hours. If they saw it often enough, they would think nothing of it, yes?

He wondered who this 'friend' would be. There was no telling, but S'kef had already decided to trust whoever it was. J'ver was a smart little beast; he knew everyone and everything, and after the mishap with Talian he was certain to be extra careful. S'kef had been outraged at the greenrider's failure, but he trusted his pet not to make the same mistake again. No, his J'ver was clever. He would never make the same mistake twice. They both knew that.

That being said, putting faith in someone else was not something the brownrider did lightly. He didn't fidget or even frown, but some part of him was aware of how vulnerable he had become. Shards! Going to a third party was already somewhat out of his comfort zone, but it was necessary. He and J'ver agreed it was necessary. This would work.

It had to work. All he could do right now was wait and see what his love delivered him. He didn't expect to be disappointed.

It was sharding late, that much was for sure, but Z'ia hadn't slept yet. Rather, the bouncy little beast had been visiting a 'moth, though Aveleth hadn't chased that day. The dragonless creature was fun, though, and enjoyed being roughed up as much as Z'ia enjoyed throwing the poor bastard around. It was an enjoyable arrangement, though granted Z'ia didn't take advantage of the situation nearly regularly enough. Perhaps he would look into changing that, though it was unlikely. The mess he made of the other man was usually attributed to his flight mothing habits; if he visited him too often, pieces of the puzzle would be put together. Z'ia was more clever than that, and took pains to keep his nose clean to the public eye.

It was one of the first thinks D'hys had emphasised when he took the freshly graduated weyrling in hand. Z'ia didn't always appreciate the things D'hys took to teaching him, or the manner in which he did so. But, the lessons were worth it, else Z'ia wouldn't still be fluttering around the older bluerider's ankles - literally. Tall bastard!

Z'ia grinned cheerfully as he bounced through the crisp night air, curls dancing around his head and step full of spring. Aveleth had mumbled a gentle word to him, a message from his dear Rilaleeyth, that J'ver's mate wished to speak to him. Z'ia was a little intimidated by that - the last thing he needed was S'kef breathing down his neck and making his life painful - but ever the best actor and lire (a talent that came naturally, no thanks to D'hys there!) Z'ia came to a halt before the Dining Hall door and tilted his head. Curls bounced, and he used one hand to push them out of his face. They were of a length where he could likely pull some of them back with a leather tie, but who had time for that?

They would simply fall free, Aveleth pointed out quietly, his voice a sleepy murmur from where he was curled up outside Z'ia's hut. A short moment later, another sleepy murmur filtered into Z'ia's mind, followed swiftly by a cheerful squeak. Plague has awaken, Amusement lingered under the sleepiness, before Z'ia felt the young blue withdraw, uninterested in the goings on between the two humans and (apparently) the fluro firelizard that landed happily on Z'ia's shoulder.

"Hey, sugar." Z'ia rubbed the little green's eyeridge even as he finally pushed the door open, and slipped inside. As he had expected, the hall was nearly entirely empty. Someone (probably a kitchen worker) was wandering around sleepily, but it looked like the poor bitch was collecting up the plates from lazy rider folk. Z'ia eyed her mutely before skipping past.

While the little bluerider was looking for S'kef, he would have skipped right by him, hidden in the shadows as he was, but for Plague's quiet chirp and a flickering image of the brownrider, wineglass in hand. Z'ia's bouncing steps came to a standstill and he tilted his head, peering at S'kef quietly for a moment. A hand rising to quiet the flitter, Z'ia slipped closer with a lot less bounce, and gave a half bow, though green eyes were serious and calculating as his chin tilted up. "Evening, Sir." His voice was a soft murmur. Plague wriggled and wrapped her tail tightly around Z'ia's neck.

S'kef was initially surprised to see Z'ia, but it didn't last long. He didn't know much about the wily little bluerider except that he sometimes snatched J'ver, and that the two had some sort of strange friendship outside of flight. S'kef didn't much care, and while his initial reaction was one of surprise, he quickly realized that it did indeed make sense. After all, J'ver had promised someone that he trusted. The greenrider had few friends.

The brownrider nodded a greeting. "Hello," he said softly. There was one thing S'kef suspected about the bluerider, but did not know for a fact; he suspected Z'ia was just as two-faced as he was. The bluerider was being civil, though, so S'kef saw no reason not to be civil in return.

"Thank you for coming," he said, tone mellow and betraying a distant hint of enthusiasm.  He poured a second glass and pushed it lazily towards Z'ia. Underneath the glass was a neatly folded piece of paper.

"Z'ia, correct?" S'kef asked as he sipped his own glass. He looked over the younger man , appraising him. Z'ia was cute, but a little on the slight side. Sometimes, though, the little ones were the most vicious. In his youth, S'kef often relied on his size and strength to frighten off would-be trouble. He was willing to stoop to very low levels as it was. He could only imagine what he'd have to resort to if he didn't have his size to back him up. Ankle-biters could terrifying and useful.

The quiet response from the brownrider had the firelizard's young wings flare out, stretching in an unintentional display as Z'ia gave a mild nod. Dark green eyes studied the brownrider as he watched the wine glass slide toward him neatly on a piece of folded paper. An eyebrow twitched slightly in curiosity, even as the tiny bluerider sat himself down in the seat facing the glass. The glass was picked up delicately and a sip taken. The paper was picked up and put into his pocket for the moment, gaze shifting to meet the brownrider's with calculating curiosity.

"Yes," the single word was drawled out slightly, almost cautious as Z'ia took another sip of the wine before placing the glass down and folding his hands before him, fingers laced together on the table top. On his shoulder, Plague eyed S'kef with a tilted head, her eye swirling through various colours as her empathy picked up pieces of her human's emotions. Her poisonous green tail slowly released from Z'ia's neck, and the little creature slid delicately down the blueriders arm and slipped onto the table. The baby creature stared at S'kef, even as Z'ia's solid gaze didn't waver from the brownrider's face. After a moment, she sat down delicately, still staring.

"You wished to speak with me?" His voice was a low murmur, even as one hand untangled from the other and his fingers flickered lightly over the breast pocket of his jacket. Z'ia wasn't quite sure if he should read the sheet then, or if S'kef would prefer he do so in the privacy of his own hut. Rilaleeyth had not given away anything to Aveleth, though Z'ia had not expected anything in depth, even after the mild announcement that S'kef was expecting him. He spent little enough time around the greenrider in question, and both dragons involved were far too delicate to handle most anything that went on in either of their bonded's lives; so easily spooked, so easily upset. No, whatever the brownrider wanted with him hadn't been passed on via the dragons and never would be.

Z'ia would have questioned the knowledge J'ver had on the topic that would bring him to S'kef's attention, but he knew better. J'ver was a slippery little bugger, but he'd seen enough of the recent interaction between S'kef and J'ver to know both men were invested in each other, perhaps more than a lot of others were aware. Of course, Z'ia had also picked up some of the up-play in mild areas, though he paid that little mind. He'd been more surprised at their denying of any relationship than he had at the acknowledgement of their relationship. Tyrrisath flew Rilaleeyth too regularly for anything else. Z'ia's lips twitched at the corner -- a few more flights a turn and he could probably claim A'liran as a 'mate'. Now wouldn't that be fun?

"Nothing serious," S'kef said lightly, nodding to Z'ia as he lifted the folded piece of paper. If he doesn't read it in a few seconds, I want you to tell him to S'kef said to Tyrrisath. He felt the dragon bristle in distaste, but the comment would be obeyed; if Z'ia didn't go ahead and read the paper at that subtle hint, the brown dragon would gently nudge him to do just that.

"I just want to make sure you're taking good care of my mate," S'kef said, brows wrinkling with supposed displeasure. "I know there's nothing...overly personal between you two, but I've also seen what's left of A'liran when you finish with him." One brow raised itself R'nya-style, accompanied by a somewhat amused smirk.

He didn't care what Z'ia did to that sassy bitch. A'liran obviously needed someone to beat some sense into him. Therefore, S'kef's comment was more of a compliment than a threat, though he was looking forward to seeing Z'ia's reaction. Had anyone ever caught this wily little blue in action? Ever?

"I just know that sometimes your blue beats us to the finish line, and I wanted to make sure you were taking good care of him when that happens,
S'kef added casually. "I'm sure we can...come to an understanding."

Z'ia frowned slightly, though the mild nod from S'kef was taken as an indication that the paper should be viewed while in his presence, and the little bluerider fished it out of his pocket, gaze flicking up to catch S'kef's gaze once more before he unfolded the sheet and his eyes danced over the words that were written there. Plague gave a sudden quiet trill, the only evidence of her bonded's surprise, while Z'ia quickly made sure his precious blue was asleep. Some parts of his life were not meant to mix with Aveleth's, and as an eyebrow rose and the sheet of paper was folded once more, Z'ia knew that was something else.

Pushing the parchment lightly back across the table toward S'kef, Z'ia surrendered it back into the brownrider's possession and wove his fingers together once more before him. All things considered, he supposed he should have figured something like this would make itself known to him from S'kef at some point. Dark green eyes shifted to catch and hold the brownrider's gaze, expression flat. "Of course," Z'ia murmured in reply, his tone dry and almost drawling. Eyebrows arched high and innocently as A'liran was brought up, Z'ia leaning backwards with a classical expression of surprised bewilderment. "I would never." Whether the little bluerider was denying the ways in which he left A'liran, or denying that he'd ever do such a thing to J'ver, was left to his companion to decide.

"I believe so," Z'ia agreed lightly, leaning casually on his elbows. Understanding; that seemed to be the phrase D'hys had used those few turns ago, and look how well that had turned out.

S'kef was satisfied. He took the paper and casually held it over the candle, watching passively as it caught fire and burned softly for a couple seconds before crumbling out of existence. The faint smell of burnt paper filled his nostrils, but that too quickly dissipated, leaving him and the bluerider alone in the darkness.

"I appreciate it. We'll talk again soon, I'm sure." He smiled genuinely. "J'ver trusts you, and I trust him. I've been told that you're the very best alternative when I can't be there myself. " He took another sip of wine. He loved Z'ia's casualness. It would take that sort of confidence to make things work, and S'kef had yet to see a lack of sincerity on the younger man's part. This should go quite nicely.

"J'ver is fond of you, in a professional sense," S'kef continued. "If things stay civil between all of us, maybe I can find room for you more often," he said. "That is, assuming you're looking." He uncorked the bottle and topped off both glasses. The wine wasn't particularly good, but it was the best he could get on short notice. There was some nice wine stashed in his hut, but he was saving that for a special ocasion.

It was late, well past the time she usually went to bed, but Rhaedalyn couldn’t sleep. It felt like she had managed a few hours of sleep but she woke suddenly at some point and continued to toss and turn, growing more and more frustrated at the lack of sleep and not knowing why she was so antsy and unable to drift back to dream land. Finally, she quietly dressed and since she needed something to do, grabbed the few plates accumulated in the room left by her roommate and herself, and slipped off to the Dining Hall to return them.

It almost felt like she was breaking a pile of rules as she moved through the quiet weyr with barely anyone in sight but so long as she didn’t get up to any mischief and attended her lessons, Rhaedalyn knew it wasn’t a crime to be out so late. That still didn’t mean she felt like she was being naughty and a little smile as she glanced around to see if she was being watched was given as soft steps brought her to her destination.

The door seemed noisier than usual and a couple of heads turned her way as she entered which Rhaedalyn smiled sheepishly at. She hadn’t been expecting people to still be up and socialising! It was nice though, knowing that others couldn’t sleep either; if they had even tried yet. It seemed some had been there for a while with the dishes and empty bottles around them. She left them all alone though, as she was simply there to return plates and hope the little stroll was enough to tire her once more to finish sleeping through the night.

Before she reached the back counter where the plates would be left for the kitchen staff to deal with, a familiar head of curls caught her attention. What was Z’ia still doing up? She had always imagined he was the type to snuggle in under the blankets around the same time she went to bed, or maybe a little after her, since he was obviously a protector and would stay awake long enough to make sure his mate was comfortable and not disturbed. Then he would slip under the blankets with her and curl in close, sharing each other’s body heat and taking silent pleasure in how they fit so well together.

Oh! She was daydreaming again. That really had to stop!

As she wondered why Z’ia was still awake, the answer came into view in the shape of the former Weyrsecond, S’kef. Why would those two meet? She couldn’t recall seeing them interact before tonight but maybe they were drinking buddies and did this regularly? Maybe it was over that slimy J’ver. Rhaedalyn knew Z’ia entered that flight and sometimes even won. Maybe S’kef didn’t like that and now that he was flaunting his love for that greenrider he wanted to make sure no one else won the flights again. That made sense. It seemed like it was going okay as well as neither man seemed angry, which was good! She didn’t want to imagine what her dear bluerider would look like with a black eye.

Pleased with the reasoning for the meeting of the two men – especially since it meant Z’ia would be in one less flight and with one less man – Rhaedalyn quickly dropped off the plates and headed back outside without saying a word. She didn’t want to bother them and she really hadn’t interacted with the others still inside before and figured tonight wasn’t the right night for such meetings. Who knew what they would think of a pretty young lady out late and socialising with men!

Z’ia watched mildly as S’kef burned the small sheet of paper, glad he had handed it back after reading the contents. That which was written in such a precise hand made his blood tingle, the thrill of adrenaline striking swiftly through him, warming him and sending wild sparks of anticipation to his eyes. A challenge, a threat, skydiving; it was all the same, in the end: all of it was about the simple process of making his blood surge with adrenaline. Was there any sweeter sensation?

Z’ia’s lips twisted into a playful smile, pleased to have been brought to the brownrider’s attention through his interaction with the greenrider the man called mate. Perhaps he should have been more wary of that particular fact – everyone knew S’kef was a cruel man and Z’ia wouldn’t have put it pass him to be jealous and to hold a grudge. After all, didn’t that note the man had just burned tell him as much, anyway? The smile flickered, delighted, and at his elbow Plague gave a cheerful chirp as she flared her wings and fluttered into the air, landing on her human’s shoulder and peering across at S’kef curiously. Her bonded was so pleased!

On the outskirts of his mind, Z’ia could feel Aveleth stir in his sleep and took a moment to sooth the beast back into a land of dreams. Aveleth was a sweet natured dragon, delicate and unable to handle stressing situations. He wouldn’t need the harassment or the guilt of seeing the depth of interaction going on between S’kef and his precious human. Content that Aveleth was asleep once more, Z’ia dipped his head slightly in agreement to that which S’kef had spoken, and leaned back slightly, short legs lifting to balance him and his features contorted into playful consideration.

“He is enjoyable company,” Z’ia replied with a slight arch of eyebrow and a twitch of the lips, amused to say such things about J’ver though, to be fair, it was hardly like there was anyone around to hear him say it. The young woman that entered and did whatever (Z’ia wasn’t paying a lick of sense to the poor love-struck girl) was hardly worth counting. There were blueriders to retain a certain appearance around, but none of those were anywhere to be seen, and when push came to shove, Z’ia decided with a tilt of his head that sent curls bouncing, retaining his appearance before S’kef would likely payout better than his blueriding buddies.

Z’ia recollected his wine glass; “Sounds promising.”

"Promising indeed." S'kef leaned to one side, sitting up in his chair and glaring through the darkness at the firgure that haunted them. He considered haivng Tyrrisath scold th stupid girl off, but she moved along before such measures became necessary. Good girl.

"Anyhow, I'm going to leave this in your capable hands," S'kef said. He finished off the last bit of wine in his glass before pushing the bottle towards Z'ia, offering the remainder to the bluerider to do as he pleased. "I don't put my trust in many people," he said, covering his apprehension with what sounded like the first rumblings of anger. "But I trust J'ver, and so by extension, I trust you. Don't disappoint me."

He smiled in confidence. Z'ia wouldn't let him down. They both knew that. They were both ambitious, with plenty of things ahead of them. Alternatives simply were not an option.

S'kef turned to walk away. Nothing else needed to be said, and he had a greenrider at home to tend to.

Z’ia’s expression was mildly amused as S’kef pushed the bottle of wine over to him, watching with calculating green eyes as the brownrider finished his own glass. His words were acknowledged with a slight nod, but the tiny bluerider made no effort to respond in any further manner, lips twisted just slightly into a very subtle smile.

Z’ia dipped his head slightly once more as S’kef smiled at him, still not bothering to speak as he watched the intimidating man turn and stride away. Z’ia leaned forward slightly, picking up the wine bottle in gentle fingers and twirling the bottle thoughtfully between his hands. Standing, he made his own way out of the Dining Hall, face a mix of thoughtfulness and downright amusement.

Damn, life was fine! Laughing softly as Plague chirped her agreement and nuzzled his cheek, Z’ia skipped cheerfully from Dining Hall to Hut in the darkness, with only the winking stars to watch him.
