Flit rustled her wings delicately, glittering eyes flashing back to her bonded as he continued to casually move about the room. Flit had no way of understanding what her bonded was doing, just that it was something he deemed very important and well worth his careful attention. He was not nervous, but he was very focused, leading Flit to believe that her position as rear guard was in fact crucial to his success. How exciting!

The dappled green fire lizard purred a bit as she looked back to the door. It was so quiet right now! S'kef had been in and out of the craft hall all day, taking care of various small administrative tasks and keeping his ears tuned to rumors. There had been subtle talk that some of the staff had packed away a few boxes of D'ren's personal belongings during the investigation and neglected to report them to either S'kef or Tsuen. That was interesting.

It took a while to locate the chest, but some casual searching and asking the right questions to the right people yielded results. It was pretty obvious that neither D'ren nor the rebels were protecting it. Rather than some grand secret or hidden conspiracy, it appeared to be nothing more than a box of belongings that had been hidden away and forgotten, though S'kef wondered why it hadn't been placed with the other materials taken from D'ren's hut. Had the bronzerider called for it? If so, why hadn't he recovered it himself now that he was better?

As S'kef pulled the box onto the table and looked it over, he imagined that the simplest answer was probably the best: it had been forgotten. Many unrelated items had been taken from D'ren's hut during the investigation. Some of it made it back and some of it was still laying around. This box had probably only become the subject of rumors because it was locked.

Locked, huh? D'ren kept many of his valuable records and personal letters in unsecured drawers. S'kef wouldn't have given a damn about the lockbox had he not known just how trusting D'ren was. If the bronzerider would leave something so valuable out in the open, what would he bother to lock up? It was interesting, yes, but more than anything else S'kef just wanted to get to it before any bored gossips did!

S'kef didn't have a key, but that didn't matter. He took the small lockbox and started to place it in a bag that he'd brought for that exact purpose when Flit let out a squeak of alarm. S'kef frowned suddenly and turned around. "Who's there?"

C'vir did not normally frequent the craft hall. It was far removed from his normal path of travel, he was no craftsman himself, and, particular as he was about the upkeep of his clothing and other possessions, he rarely needed the assistance of the weyr's crafters. As was so often the case in the brownrider's life, it was his dragon that drove him to what he personally considered an unlikely (and somewhat unnecessary, circumstances considered) destination. Besulth, of late, had amassed growing list of complaints about his riding straps despite the utter lack of concrete evidence to suggest that any of the alleged problems actually existed. The easiest way to appease the dragon and buy another few months of silence on the topic was to find a competent craftsperson to pronounce the straps sound. If he could find someone qualified and willing to certify the straps, he'd arrange a time to have them inspected under Besulth's watchful eye -- the dragon wouldn't argue with an expert.

With his goal in mind, C'vir entered the craft hall, scanning the stations occupied by people working singly or chatting softly in small groups. He wasn't sure where to start: he'd need a tanner, to test the leather, and a smith to examine the metal fastenings. His best stab at a search strategy was to roam the open floors, peeking surreptitiously at projects and shoulder knots. Whether it was due to the day, the hour, or what appeared to be the low level of demand for craft services, the hall was less populated than he'd hoped; he quietly made almost a full round of the floor with little success. Hardly inclined to continue investigating the unfamiliar setting, he considered returning later in the sevenday in hopes of better luck, but was driven on by the distaste that accompanied the thought of leaving his task unfinished. He'd get the double the grief from Besulth if he returned without an appointment to have the straps checked -- double the grief and a renewed push for an entirely new set. He refused to waste Faranth-knew-how-many marks on something that didn't need replacing, so he pushed on, drawn to one of the further areas by the sounds of muffled activity. He fully expected the crafters he needed to be hidden away in some dark corner; nothing came easily when Besulth's invented needs were involved.

C'vir neared the noises, moving quietly and without great haste. He expected to encounter -- if he was lucky -- a tanner slice strips of hide, or a smith appraising the quality of a collection of metalwork. He found S'kef instead. There was no mistaking the Weyrleader, or the fact that he was in the process of bagging something. The brownrider would have thought little of it -- people came and went with various wares from the crafthall all the time -- were it not for the squawk of alarm that escaped the green flit hovering watchfully over her master. The rider rocked instinctively back onto his heels when the Weyrleader turned, caught off guard by suddenly finding himself face-to-face with a somewhat startled S'kef.

"C'vir," the rider supplied, before deciding to add his dragon's name for good measure. The Weyrleader knew of him, if only vaguely; he'd assisted at T'shiro's execution at the leadership's request. "Of brown Besulth." His gaze flickered back to the bag in the man's hand; whatever the Weyrleader was removing from the hall, he clearly hadn't anticipated being interrupted while doing it. The longer the brownrider thought about the circumstances, the more curious he became. Any crafter with half a brain would personally wrap and deliver any commission of the Weyrleader's upon completion. What then would the man go out of his way to retrieve and carry off himself, shoved into a bag?

"Apologies -- I didn't mean to startle you. There's not a single sharding tanner to be found in the place today." From what the brownrider could see of the item in S'kef had been busy bagging, the Weyrleader was in possession of some kind of box. C'vir had been more inclined to guess he'd see a pile of papers; the weyr gossips often speculated about all the various documents that got shuttled off and stashed around the crafthall, and the Weyrleader probably had no shortage of routine paperwork to keep up with. He took a step forward, curiosity doing battle with prudence without a flicker of either registering on his face.  "Picking up anything worthwhile?" His query was accompanied by a furtive peak at the items in question. He was neither terrified of S'kef nor rushing to stand in his support; he knew little of the man and thus considered himself ill-equipped to pass any judgment. Ultimately, for all his power, the Weyrleader was a man much like any other -- a man that C'vir had suddenly found a brief opportunity to try to figure out.

"I'm not startled," S'kef replied in an even tone, eyes sweeping over the younger man as he sized him up. He recalled the man's name now that it was repeated to him. He hadn't heard much, but enough to know that he was no troublemaker. He watched the young man cautiously before going back to his task, pushing piles of documents into his bag along with the lockbox. He didn't notice when one little packet slipped off the table, the light 'plop' as it hist the floor drowned out by the rustling of paper as he continued to fill the bag.

"Worthwhile? That's a matter of perception," S'kef said as he continued to leaf through papers. Anything even mildly incriminating, anything that delved too deeply or revealed too much, needed to be dealt with. Of course, the serious offenders had long been purged. He'd destroyed the letter where he asked Z'ia for help, he'd destroyed everything that might have allowed someone to trace them to the wine bottle or the tansy...everything. Not much was left, but S'kef preferred to be safe rather than sorry.

What he didn't know was that the packet of papers that had fallen in the floor revealed various sweeprider schedules set by his old wingleader, R'nya. They bore the signature of both the wingleader and his late second, T'shiro, and confirmed that T'shiro was out on duty on the night that D'ren was poisoned...Not late enough to be away during the incident, but only returning an hour or so before, undoubtedly too late to actually get everything going. S'kef didn't even know that such paperwork had been maintained, so he hadn't known to watch out for it...and now, he still hadn't noticed he'd dropped it.

C'vir submitted to the inspection, assuming a perfectly placid expression under the Weyrleader's gaze. The lack of immediate recognition was in a part a relief, and in part a disappointment, despite being the result of his own careful efforts. He'd done nothing -- positive or negative -- to court the notice of the leadership, resting in obscurity with all of the other riders that were neither defectors nor syncophants. He had no intention of remaining part of  the invisible masses forever, but preferred to progress according to his own schedule. The possibility of failure would become an ever-present reality the moment he took the first steps to distinguish himself, a strain for which he wanted to be fully prepared.

S'kef's continued composure as he returned to his task forced C'vir to doubt what he'd initially perceived as alarm. It seemed likely that the squawk of the man's skittish firelizard, not guilt, was responsible for his reaction. He assumed the Weyrleader would have the sense to avoid handling sensitive material in a public place, though hiding in plain sight was often an effective means of shirking suspicion. With suspicions in mind, C'vir reflected on his own: he wasn't typically prone to suspect people of illicit intent when he caught them going about normal business, but the unexpected encounter -- and the reaction of the Weyrleader's vigilant flit -- had sent his thoughts down unlikely avenues of analysis.

As S'kef spoke, C'vir watched a packet slip from the stack and flutter to the floor, unnoticed. Rather than leave it where it lie, he crouched to retrieve it, noting from the heading its mundane nature: sweeprider schedules. He wasn't sure what kind of documentation he'd expected S'kef to be shuttling off with, but, judging from the bit the man had dropped, the papers he was bagging were neither sinister nor particularly interesting. C'vir, prepared to return the papers to the Weyrleader and excuse himself to finish his (thus far) futile search for crafters, started to extend the arm in which he held the documents. At the bottom of the page, near his thumb, he caught sight of T'shiro's signature. The bronzerider's execution, along with the protests and questions surrounding it, was still fresh in his mind.

C'vir's eyes returned to the page's heading, this time, noting the date. It was a day with which most Katilans were now familiar: the one on which an attempt was made on D'ren's life. He inhaled. Whatever was in the document was none of his business, and yet, there was little about sweeprider schedules that would require them to be kept private. He scanned the page quickly, then, disbelieving, returned to the top to give it a more thorough perusal.

"S'kef," he started, dispatching with the Weyrleader's title in his bewilderment. "Has anyone seen this? T'shiro couldn't have poisoned D'ren."

What C'vir read suggested that the bronzerider, while still without an alibi for his whereabouts at the hour of D'ren's poisoning, wouldn't have finished with sweeps with enough time to do what he had been convicted of. Had the panel in charge of investigating D'ren's poisoning seen the sweeprider schedule the brown rider held in his hand, they couldn't have comfortably condemned the bronzerider. C'vir stared at the Weyrleader, searching for something that would help him determine if the papers had been accidentally overlooked or purposefully concealed.

Why don't you ask him? Besulth had woken, disturbed by his rider's sudden emotional shift. For once, C'vir didn't hesitate to accept his dragon's advice. He gripped the papers firmly, pulled them into his side, and aimed a question that bordered on accusation at S'kef.

"Did you know about this?"

S'kef's eyes flashed over to C'vir as the man spoke. His gaze was immediately drawn to the papers the other brownrider held, wondering when he'd dropped them and how long C'vir had them. S'kef grimaced and approached, reaching out to take the papers, attempting to snatch them from C'vir's hands. He didn't need to actually hold them to glance over them and see what they were, though. He would recognize R'nya's handwriting anywhere, and while the fact that such a document existed surprised him at first, he quickly realized it shouldn't have.

This was a problem.

"....I didn't," he grunted as he looked it over, a mildly disturbed expression lingering on his face for a moment. How could he have made such a blunder? How could something like this have gone overlooked for so long, and how could he have simply let it fall to the floor in the presence of some nosy kid? At least he wasn't technically lying, though. C'vir had asked if he knew about it, and well...he hadn't. There was no way of knowing how the young man would take S'kef's lingering pause and uncomfortable, almost angry expression.

"What a shame," he said, once again using the words in a much different context than one might expect. He sighed once, then summoned Flit to his shoulder to rest while he thought about what to do. He crossed his arms and cast a stern expression at C'vir. He waited, wondering how the young man would respond, and choosing to wait until he knew the answer before following up with comment of his own. This was a difficult matter...did he deny it, or did he own up to it? S'kef had no problem challenging the young brownrider, but he also saw no reason to blow his cover without cause.

Just how clever was this young man?

S'kef's surprise -- evidenced by the immediate amount of attention the paperwork garnered -- was genuine, but whether that surprise was inspired by the information the document contained or by the fact that it hadn't yet been destroyed, C'vir wasn't certain. Ignorant as the Weyrleader may have been of the sweep record, he was unmistakably eager to his hands on it; his sudden desire to retrieve it betrayed its value. The brownrider took a few hasty steps backwards as S'kef, keeping his feet beneath him and his find just out of the other man's grasp. He clutched the paper tighter, his uneasiness with the encounter manifesting itself in his fingers. He was starting to suspect that his discovery wasn't as innocuous as he'd assumed.

What in Faranth's name am I supposed to do with this? The question repeated itself in his mind, answers branching off along all manners of possibilities. The document brought every minor doubt he'd harbored about S'kef, every sordid rumor he'd heard over the past months, into stark relief. C'vir's limited experience with the man had prevented him from forming an opinion based on anything other than his official actions and public persona, both of which yielded cause for concern as frequently as for commendation. If this afternoon's encounter was any indication,  the more outspoken Katilans had perhaps been correct in voicing their reservations about the new Weyrleader's appointment.

C'vir met the Weyrleader's gaze evenly as the man replied, anxiety over provoking the man's anger temporarily forgotten. He shook his head, unsatisfied with S'kef's vague response but more concerned with the implications inherent in the information he'd just read. "I think the original investigators of the incident should see this. It's too late for T'shiro," he said with a frown, preferring, for the moment, not to recall the execution or the moments of whispered exchange between S'kef and the condemned but composed bronzerider. "But it's not too late to give him a public pardon, to find whoever is actually responsible." He inhaled, uncomfortable with the knowledge that what he asked could be construed as a threat. The Weyr had the right to know the truth; T'shiro deserved better than to needlessly lose his honor along with his life. "If you're hesitant to revoke the judgment, why not publish this whole thing publicly?" The hand holding the papers twitched. "Let the people draw their own conclusions."

S'kef's brows narrowed as he set his gaze on the younger man with a severe expression. "Give me the papers, son," he said, tone calm and low, almost threatening. He felt a pang of anger at the act of defiance, but rather than answering it with outward aggression, he uttered that single warning. His eyes never moved from C'vir's as he held out one hand expectantly.

He listened to the young man's proposal, and wasn't sure if he wanted to laugh or spit. How adorably naive and appropriately righteous. "To what end?" he asked in a serene but shallow tone, lifting one skeptical brow and allowing a cruel sneer to cross his face. "So the Weyr can panic? Fall into anger and accusations again?" He took a deep breath and took one long step towards C'vir. The older brownrider slithered close, bringing his mouth close to his younger counterpart's ear and speaking in a near-whisper. "...Risk tearing itself apart again?"

He let it sink in for a moment before peeling away and slowly circling around, moving slowly and deliberately. "...Regardless of what is right, that is what will happen, my young friend. These people are weary, I'm sure you can see that....What will a new scandal do aside from tear this place apart at it's seams?"

He paused in front of the brownrider and slowly allowed his smile to return, softer and confident this time. "...I prefer to think of it as time to go forward, not backward. I choose not to linger any longer," he said. "I would like to think that there are others who feel the same." It was a hint, a silent incentive for C'vir to forget this nonsense and stand with those who preferred glory to civil war. "It's a shame what happened, C'vir, but it's time to put it behind us. I would rather ride to the north and reclaim our glory than kill one another in this foul jungle...And as greatly as I disagreed with T'shiro and disagree with D'ren now, I'm certain they too would favor future life over more death..."

He ground his teeth.
