Chir didn't even have the chance to greet the egg before someone walked on top of him and subsequently tugged him into the sands. It was lucky he had no voice and only a surprised grunt passed from between his teeth. The boy lay still, frozen to the spot as he took stock of himself and his surroundings. The egg, thankfully, lay unharmed and hid the tangled pair from Malvayth's watchful eye.
Even when Cazan appeared, Chir lay in the sands until after Zory regained his feet, not wanting to risk colliding with the other candidate again and risking any real damage. Once he was in the clear, the freckled mute accepted Cazan's help back to his feet where he stood with his head lowered in shame. He'd tried so hard to keep the eggs safe! And to keep Malvayth comfortable. And still, he'd mangled it. Recalling how sensitive the gold dragon was to emotions, Chir quickly battled back the feelings of failure. If he was lucky, Mal would only assume this particular egg hadn't cared for him.
Chir didn't resist as he was tugged towards the stands, though he looked back with some regret at missing his chance to greet all of Malvayth's babies. Hearing the other stumble over his apologies, Chir turned to offer a reassuring smile. He held up his index finger and thumb in a circle, his other three fingers relaxed over it in an 'okay' sign. Everything was fine. Though what could have happened haunted him, Chir knew that focusing on it all too much would give the could-haves more power than they should have over him.
Climbing up into the stands, Chir was relieved to be greeted by the familiar weight of his firelizard. The little green trilled as she circled around to snuggle him fiercely. All was well that ended well.
