Aradissicath studied her Sands companion quietly for several minutes. The young gold had calmed considerably over the course of her time bound to the warm cavern. Malvayth still had her endearing qualities about her but she wasn’t quite as quick to react emotionally in one extreme or the other. Today might push that limit. She had done well for the Touching a week earlier with hundreds of Candidates wandering around but a Hatching was different. All of those kids would be on the Sands at the same time with hatchlings roaming every which way.
It wasn’t the first time Fort had had two golds on the Sands at the same time but this was the first one that had them so close together. Aradissicath discussed it first with Malvayth before bringing it to Rhaedalyn’s attention. They agreed a wall of rocks wasn’t necessary but Aradissicath and Xyreith would change where they normally stood by observing so they were closer to Malvayth’s precious eggs and could deter any wandering hatchling.
Thunder crashed and Aradissicath huffed at her eggs. They really did always seem to have the worst timing for making their entrance. It was evening, the humans likely wrapping up dinner or settling into their night-time routines. That wouldn’t have been too bad but it had started snowing an hour ago and with the thunder, it seemed like they were in for a bad storm. Visibility would be low so word would have to accompany the news of the Hatching to the other Weyrs and the Lord Holder that they should either stay home or be extremely cautious upon arriving.
But none would know about the Hatching at all if she didn’t telling Rhaedalyn and begin her humming. She had sent her rider away hours ago, telling her to take care of herself that evening with dinner and a bath. They knew the eggs were close but they had been through enough Hatchings now that Aradissicath knew she would be fine on her own for a while. It begins. Some eager ones by the look of things. Maybe only an hour or two before they start popping their heads out. Aradissicath rumbled with amusement as Rhaedalyn began her flustered dance around the weyr to send the letters off and get the girls looked after.
Malvayth, my babies are ready to find their mates. It will be busy in here for hours. Are you sure you’ll be okay? Are you ready to start humming with me to send out the call? Aradissicath stood and stretched out her wings, giving them a good shake. She loved being on the Sands but sometimes she forgot to stay active and stayed curled up with her eggs longer than she should. After that mighty stretch, she moved across the cavern to take up a spot where she was still close to her clutch but would also be a buffer to Malvayth’s—and not block the other gold’s view. It was important for Malvayth to see how a Hatching went and the young dragon was too excited and would be miserable if she couldn’t watch.
Everyone is welcome to come watch! If you’re only watching, please go directly to the stands, do not linger on the Sands or approach the Candidates. Candidates, you can go right onto the Sands and form up around the eggs and settle in for some waiting.
Candidates:
- Will have been told to wear shoes! Sturdy shoes to save their feet from the heat and standing for so long.
- Be in Candidate robes that more or less fit them.
- Will have hair pulled back in a pony-tail or a braid. In addition, there will be no jewellery, belt, sash, or anything ‘extra’. Don’t want anything to get tugged on and cause an injury.
- Aradissicath loves firelizards in day to day life but she’s not huge on distractions around her eggs. Firelizards will be allowed in but they must stay with the humans in the stands or up with the dragons on the ledges. If they go near the eggs or Candidates, they may not live to brag about it.
This is an NPC Impression. There will likely only be 4 Hatching posts with 11 eggs each and come out somewhat rapidly. This is just for fun so new Candidates can get some more play and it’s fun to have a big event happen sometimes.
And remember: The only female Candidates at this Hatching are those that have finished their healing training or have a special arrangement. I think that’s currently Dareji, Aederyn, and maybe August?
The alert for the Hatching went out around 6pm and the dragonets will start to appear between 7-8pm.
