Alekse pretended to consider the thought deeply, but his smirk gave away his game. He turned toward the dance floor, the song having ended and the people dispersing before the set started again.
For the first time in a long while, since his early stolen kisses as a youth and daydreaming of the first thing to flutter her eyelashes at him, he was thinking past those kisses and embraces. The next kiss or touch wasn’t his sole goal. A single night wasn’t the end of the story. Or at least, he hoped it wouldn’t be. With a bit of surprise it clicked that all they had done was kiss, talk, and enjoy each other’s nearness. More would have been pleasant, sure. But, should things in the future go as swimmingly as they were now, there would be time yet for that. And perhaps the waiting would make it more worthwhile.
The harpers struck up another song. This one wasn’t familiar, though he liked the tune. He was a decent lead and she was a good follow. They partnered each other well. They could figure it out.
“Going east? Taking on a new position? Meeting your family?” He squinted at nothing in particular, as though weighing his options before he couldn’t hide anymore and his face lit up in one of his wide grins. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” he offered her an elbow to lead her to the floor. There would be time for packing and shopping and all of that later. For now…
“It would be my absolute pleasure.”
