Well, it seemed she had at least some ability to understand complex questions. One of the last girls had said ‘because the Weyrleader told me to be,’ which was completely unacceptable. Verec refused to allow people who thought that way to become Apprentices whenever he possibly could. He could think of only one example where the person had made a good Healer, and he was an exception, not the rule. Usually it just lead to a bored, uninterested teenager resenting their classes which was a waste of everyone’s time.
So she didn’t get herself thrown out on the first question. Too early to call that promising, but it least the interview wasn’t an abject failure. Plenty of time for her to prove herself unsuitable, still. Perhaps is was wrong of Verec to assume the worst, but it was better for everyone if the people who would lose interest or hate Healing didn’t start in the first place. They’d be happier elsewhere, and Verec could focus his energies on the people it could best serve. Better for everyone involved than accepting everyone willy nilly.
Time for another question.
“If it pains you to see others in pain, how will you manage being a Healer?” Verec asked with a feigned nonchalance, “A Healer sees more pain than anyone else. A Healer will inevitably see some of those under their care suffer and die. How will you handle that, Zellera?”
