743.08.03 | Hopeful - Mylorah - 02.Aug.22

Mylorah stared at Amagrith who stared back. They had slept for a few hours after the class was led to their new home for the next little while but both were now awake once more. Amagrith was sitting in her egg shell again and Mylorah wondered if this was already gold privilege or just humouring an unpredictable hatchling until they could safely take it from her without causing a tantrum. Either way, it was kind of embarrassing even if it was a tad cute as well. But it already had Mylorah wondering if T'cai could use a smaller piece of the shell to make a new and larger wind chime with. Instead of the bones hanging from a piece of wood or a pretty seashell, it could maybe hang from the egg shell and it could go on their future ledge or closer to Amagrith's little nest.

The chubby gold's eyes whirled with excitement at the idea and Mylorah simultaneously winced at the idea she didn't even know was possible being seen and putting a finger to her lips to keep Amagrith quiet. Then she slipped out of her cot and waved for Amagrith to follow her outside. Her cot was already close to the main door so it was a quick trip out into the early morning light. She knew anyone else close to the door and slightly awake would still hear her dragonet but it was better than being right beside a group of classmates.

One of the assistants was hot on their heels and Mylorah actually blushed with embarrassment, forgetting that she didn't have quite as much freedom as she used to, even under Candidate rules. "We're just going to sit here for a little bit. Maybe chat but I didn't want to bother anyone else. I promise I'll yell if anything changes." That seemed to be enough and the assistant went back to his post.

I'm a gold, Amagrith began and Mylorah just looked at her, waiting for where this was going. We make the rules and we're important. Everyone says so. Mylorah doubted everyone had said that and didn't think anyone had actually said they made the rules but they had received enough glances and random comments after the Hatching for the gold to know her worth. "Maybe one day we'll have more power but right now, you're barely fresh from your shell and they know a lot more." I know plenty! "Fine, they know more than me so we need to listen to them and follow the rules that are meant to keep us safe."

Amagrith fell silent as she thought about things while prancing around in the sunlight. Mylorah plopped to the ground and watched her frolic. She already loved Amagrith and didn't know what she would do if she was taken from her but she also had never truly expected to Impress to a gold, maybe at all. If she looked at her four siblings that had already Impressed, she had a good chance to get gold but she honestly thought she'd be the one to break the mould again and get a blue. Amagrith stopped and turned to look at her and Mylorah laughed. "Blues have more fun, generally speaking, but I think we'll do just fine," she quickly assured her cream puff that seemed slightly appeased--for the moment.

After several minutes of Amagrith chasing her tail she finally stopped and flopped beside Mylorah who couldn't resist giving the head coming to rest on her lap some scritches. Carefully, she finally asked, "do you really think I need Tazikel and Gangleri here with me?" Who? A pause, and then, Oh. Z'kel and L'ri. No. Yes. You need them because they make you happy and you have fun adventures but you don't need them to be a goldrider. You're strong and perfect.

“I think that was helpful. Maybe.” She still felt horrible that they ended up Impressing but she couldn’t stop being thankful either. Maybe she didn’t need them as support—time would tell on that—but she had been dreading the day when their lives finally pulled them apart and now it wouldn’t happen. She could continue being greedy and keep her men close. “You’re going to like Tazicurls. He’s very charming and an excellent dancer. And the Master Harper is full of stories and songs. We’re going to have a lot of fun together.”

Mylorah paused for a large yawn and then a light laugh. “Later, though. I think more sleep is needed first.” Amagrith seemed content to sleep as she was but Mylorah eventually convinced her to get moving and they made their way back inside, waving at the assistant before crashing back into bed. Amagrith curled up beside it and Mylorah watched her for a few minutes, smiling at how sweet she was. She still wasn’t entirely convinced everything would be okay and she hadn’t had a chance to talk that much with her men to see how they were doing or if they hated her but she would keep trying to stay positive about it all while becoming a passable goldrider.

The best one.

“I thought you were asleep,” Mylorah whispered but didn’t receive an answer as she felt the peace of sleep through their bond take hold of the dragon before finally grabbing her as well.
