742.03.01 | Open Your Eyes - Rakka - 02.Mar.21

It had been a few days since her enchanting encounter with the beautiful bronze dragon, and it's rider... though his features seemed to blend in to his face, whereas the dragon remained a shining beacon of memory of the dragons who once ruled Pern and now... did again. It made entire sense to her that the Dragons and Dragonriders were given tithe, she believed (like her traditional father) that the threat of thread was immanent, growing ever closer as the red star loomed eerily in the distance.

And so, the Dragons and Dragonriders were slightly elevated from the rest, above the Lord Holders even, and the Craftmasters... but they needed the Holds as much as the Holds needed the Weyrs... Rakka told herself as she shuffled down the path from the cavehold towards the cots. She had clutched in her arms a basket with things her mother had told her to bring to one of the cotholds for a sick holder.

And of course it was Rakka who had to do it, Rakka do this, Rakka do that, Rakka be here, Rakka go there. She rolled her eyes as she shuffled towards the cothold and deposited the basket outside the door, she wasn't going in there, she didn't want to get sick. She gave a brisk knock and then backed away. She would have to return soon to the caves which made up the dank, smelly, and damp home she'd lived in her entire life.

But she wasn't going to hurry, dark eyes darting around she watched with some interest at the bustle of people doing whatever it is they did... she should know more about what happened in the hold, being the daughter of the Lord Holder of this minor little hold beholdened to Crom. She shuddered in her mind, just thinking about all these things, the amount of times she'd thought the word hold it didn't even sound like a word anymore!

A low hum escaped her lips as she trudged back, no, there was no hurry.

RE: 742.03.01 | open your eyes - B'jin - 04.Mar.21

B’jin looked down at the Hold as they circled above, the dragons spiralling slowly downwards, and scrunched up his nose. The Hold was small, out of the way, and in B’jin’s experience that usually meant they were absolutely fawned over in wordless awe, or they were given the stink eye from wary and withdrawn individuals. Neither was overly fun, though he supposed the former was at least more manageable. Candidates could come out of a fawning crowd; it was harder to convince the suspicious ones that their kid should come away to Impress a dragon.

We should find a couple, Larrikith said easily, as she finally back winged so she could land in the courtyard, tucking her wings in so Ayyonth and Tybalith could also land, one to each side of her. She snorted lowly and shook herself out, standing up and then sitting down primly as she turned her head to look at Tybalith. See if you can pick out any good ones, she instructed, before looking around herself at those that were coming closer to the three dragons and their riders.

B’jin watched the crowd grow, a friendly smile forming easily on his lips as he took his riding helmet and goggles off, attaching them to the strap in front of him that was made for just that, and then swung a leg over to slide with practised grace down Larrikith’s side to land on the ground at her feet. He pulled his gloves off, tucking them into his back pocket as he peered around. “Hello!” he greeted cheerfully, and was pleased when some people said hello back, while still others gave hesitant waves. Several were gawking at the dragons. It really was fun to be a dragonrider.

“I’m B’jin, and this is my Larrikith.” He said easily, indicating the green dragon behind him. She snorted at him, but was too busy Searching to pay him any real heed. Her attention was divided between eyeballing the crowd for potential future dragonriders, and answering any questions or quips Tybalith sent her way. “My companions are R’nd and Ayyonth,” he indicated the blue pair, “and our trainees, D’lyne and Tybalith.” He waved at the young woman and her green. “We’re here on Search! If you are interested, please come this way!” And B’jin set the eager youngsters up in a haphazard line, so the dragons could examine them a little more closely than was needed, because it made for a good show.

Jenn's Daelyne will most likely be joining the thread, but Sunset's R'nd will most likely be chilling in the background :)

RE: 742.03.01 | open your eyes - Rakka - 04.Mar.21

Dragons in the sky! That was a definite reason to quicken her pace as her gaze followed the not one, not two, but three glorious dragons. A blue smaller much smaller than the bronze K’dar rode and two greens. She wondered what could bring three dragons here to their small hold. It had to be big... or it wouldn’t be three. Her stomach churned, or perhaps grumbled as she conveniently forgot about the rest of her chores to join the growing throng of people surrounding the Dragonriders.

Brown eyes were wide as she caught a snippet of the sentence. Search! But what were they looking for, likely lads? It would be great if one of the smarter, more capable of the holder boys were searched, but it would probably lead to envy among the other boys... and herself, though there was a girl on a green so perhaps there was hope after all. It certainly couldn’t hurt to listen a bit longer. Today her hair was thoroughly and tightly plaited, ensuring it would not repeat its antics of a few days prior. The willowy girl looked, wide eyed from B’jin, to the woman and the over to the blue rider.

Would her father even allow her to go if she was searched? Her stomach twisted, he had too much respect and probably fear for Dragonriders to refuse them one of his sons, but what about a second daughter? Her lips curved into a smile, if there was any possibility of her leaving this hold in something other than marriage she had to try for it. It wasn’t like she was like her sister, she couldn’t marry some random holder and have ten or more children.

Rakka felt out of place in the predominantly male group of individuals who were interested in becoming Dragonriders. Her brown eyes instinctively moved between B’jin and D’lyne, sensing they were the two to impress, or at least get some positive reaction out of. She was on the brink of saying something, but kept thinking better of it, of all the moments to be undecided now was probably the worst. She had managed to slip her way near the front of the partial line, not the most sportsmanlike (or for that matter ladylike) thing to do, but Rakka didn’t care, not right now.

When finally she felt like she’d made eye contact with one of the Dragonriders she spoke. “I’m Rakka.” She finally conquered the inability to speak. Her voice, she was glad to hear, was clear and calm. She set her mouth in determination and waited for one of the riders to speak.

RE: 742.03.01 | open your eyes - D'lyne - 07.Mar.21

Tybalith landed neatly next to Larrikith, graceful and not at all what her force of personality would have dictated if she was any other dragon. D'lyne grinned with pride when her green did so, Tybalith was ever a wrecking ball and when the dragon did something so elegantly, D'lyne was pleased with her. Tybalith rumbled with amusement at her rider's thoughts and listened closely to Larrikith as the other green began instructing her.

How will I know whether they're good or not? the wildly marked green asked, Is there some special ping or something that makes them good? D'lyne muttered under her breath, slapping a hand over her face, and moved to slip out of her riding straps and to the ground. "You know exactly what Larrikith is telling you, foolish," she rolled her eyes at the green, "This isn't your first search, shithead." I know that... I just wanted to make sure Larrikith wasn't losing her touch is all, the green told her with a sideways glance at the other green and the blue that had accompanied them.

"One of these days you're going to be an ass to the wrong dragon," D'lyne shook her head and allowed B'jin to make the introductions. Tybalith inhaled deeply and peered at the line of youths. She had a pretty strong inkling of who of the boys was likely but she wanted to run it past Larrikith as she took a moment to study the girl that walked up. Second boy from the right and the last boy on the left, she sent to Larrikith as the boys came closer and closer. Tybalith liked to put on a show as much as B'jin did and took a moment to get down to the boy's levels, nostrils flaring as she snuffled in close to snort a breath around his hair while D'lyne choked back her laughter.

You'll do, she told the first boy she mentioned to Larrikith as she shoved the boy gently with her nose. She's bold as hell isn't she? the green said as the redheaded girl pushed her way forward, I like her.

RE: 742.03.01 | Open Your Eyes - B'jin - 11.Mar.21

B’jin enjoyed bringing D’lyne along on Searches; for one, she entertained him and her dragon kept Larrikith on her toes. But also, the fact that she was a woman on green – and Tybalith was incredibly eye catching and undoubtably green – meant that women were usually more likely to step forward and try to be one of those that were Searched. While B’jin and Larrikith still preferred to put their stamp on the women and men that would Impress to gold or bronze, that didn’t mean they were oblivious to the youngsters that were inclined towards other colours.

While Larrikith was exchanging quips with Tybalith, B’jin waved kids forward or off, following the instructions of the dragon and her apprentice. The girl that came forward was greeted with an inquisitive look from Larrikith as Tybalith pointed her out, and the little, round green dragon shoved her own nose forward, snuffling at Rakka’s hair, and breathing against her face with what was probably questionably flavoured air. I like her, the little dragon said, lifting her head after a moment and considering the girl.

You have promise, Larrikith said cheerfully to Rakka, letting her voice touch the girl’s open mind and poke around gently, not prying for secrets but just engaging in her topmost thoughts. B’jin bounced up beside Larrikith’s head, putting a hand to her cheek as he grinned at the young blonde. “Would you like to come with us, Rakka?” He asked, doing a mental gauge of the girl’s age. She looked old enough to make the decision on her own, assuming she wasn’t already married; he assumed she wasn’t and if she was, that she was doing a damn good job of hiding that fact from his dragon. No husband, Larrikith said quietly to B’jin. Possessive father. B’jin chose not to respond, just waited quietly for the girl to speak.

RE: 742.03.01 | Open Your Eyes - Rakka - 11.Mar.21

Her brown eyes lit up as she made eye contact with the young woman. She was pretty, prettier than Rakka? The girl contemplated this thought, mulling it over in her mind before deciding that no, she was prettier than the girl, if only marginally. Which meant, she could be nice to-and maybe even become friends with her... or was she getting ahead of herself.

Rakka suppressed her own mirth when the beautiful green dragon snorted in one of the hold boys face. It was adorable to watch the boys shocked and nervous reaction. But he stood his ground, and she felt proud of her hold in that moment. Blinking as she found herself looking into the lovely eyes of the green dragon before her, Rakka suppressed the urge to giggle. It was so beautiful, lovely. She could get lost in those eyes.

She stood her ground bravely as the odd odor of the dragons breath overwhelmed her and the creature shuffled her hair (thankfully it had been plaited with in an inch of its life and so stood up... mostly to the investigation). Then, her lips parted slightly in wonderful shock and amazement as she heard a voice, clear as day in her head. Was it the dragon? Was that what a dragon sounded like? Rakka felt a wonderful sensation at the thought that she heard a dragon, though part of her wondered if it was only in her mind, that she was so desperate to understand a dragon that she’d made it up.

The man was standing close enough for her to reach out and touch him now, and she had to fight the urge to do so. Impulsive as she was she could control her actions much better than her words. At his question her eyes widened into nearly full circles. Giving her the appearance of being essentially all eyes with how big they were already. “To the Weyr you mean?” She asked breathlessly. Of course he had to mean the Weyr... her gaze faltered uncertainly for a moment before she squared her shoulders. “Yes.” She answered firmly, wondering if that were too forward. It would be with a holder she thought.

Her father couldn’t object. He had too much difference and respect for the Weyr. And she knew he would be pleased beyond reason if a son were to be searched so... it stood to reason that he would be at least somewhat pleased to have a daughter searched. And she wasn’t an only daughter. Her sister had made, what she had been told, was an excellent match. “I would be honored.” She added, remembering her manners and dropping a passable courtesy to the man. After all he was... she assumed her elder and a Dragonrider. And being respectful was a good thing. Her gaze slipped towards the girl again, then to the blue rider, and then back to B’jin. At a loss for words at the moment, a rare phenomenon indeed.

RE: 742.03.01 | Open Your Eyes - B'jin - 24.Mar.21

“Excellent!” B’jin beamed, clapping his hands together when Rakka agreed to come to the Weyr, not bothering to answer her first question as she’d clearly figured it out a moment later. Her curtsy was cute, and B’jin tossed her a cheerful wink when she looked back up at him again. “You’ll need to collect any belongings you wish to bring with you. The Weyr will provide you most basic necessities but a lot of people find they prefer to bring their own stuff.”

He smiled at her again, and tilted his head. “You should also let your family know you’re going. You’ve been Searched for Telgar, but you won’t be locked there and can Stand at any Clutch.” As he spoke, B’jin noticed that a couple of young men had joined them, and he included them in his little speech, smiling warmly at them all. Larrikith and Tybalith had approved them, and Larrikith said there were a couple more that they were umming over.

“You’ll also be able to come back and visit any time! The elder Weyrlings tend to end up with taxi duty, but we’re a friendly bunch,” as a whole, anyway. B’jin knew of more than a couple less friendly dragonriders, but he wasn’t interested in scaring their new candidates away, but rather making sure they all knew they could come home to visit any time they wanted, so long as their Weyrlingmaster agreed to letting them out of the Weyr. Which, mostly they weren’t too fussed about. It was only after the Touching that the Candidates would find themselves chained to the Weyr in anticipation fo the Hatching.

B’jin nodded to himself, and to the small group. “You can bring one bag of stuff, but we can come back at a later date if you forget something.” He spread his hands wide, and grinned broadly. “Go collect your stuff, kids, and meet us back here. Off you go!” B’jin made shooing motions with his hands, and watched the youngsters skitter off, turning to see what R’nd was up to, before checking on D’lyne.
