Rissa seems to think my super cool escort idea is not super cool. I suppose she has a point that a firelizard is just as good as a rider for determining if a destination is safe, I just don't want to lose a gold on my watch.
Perhaps I am being overly protective. Ah well. I can just encourage any new golds we get to keep firelizards. Should I get one? I'm not sure Urudith would appreciate having a flitter in his sun.
Also K'dar came in with a black eye again. Had a talk with that boy about his fighting. He's a bronzerider, he should be winning! He assures me he gave as good as he got, but if this keeps up I might have to start sparring with him to make sure he gets better at holding his own.
Urudith doesn't think it's a big deal and suggests I leave it alone, but this is important. A man has to know how to defend himself. Maybe women too... I'll ask Rissa if that's something she thinks should be offered. Maybe if there's enough general interest I'll start up a class.

Mostly a followup... my face hurts. K'dar has a mean left hook and I don't know who he's fighting with that keeps leaving him bruised but I don't think I want to meet him. Maybe I should have him teach that class... Urudith has been laughing at me all day. I think I'm going to ice my face and nap before Mulrissa sees me.

One of the old healers stopped by to grab some of his plants that he'd left behind. Had one of my apprentice bronzes help him dig up some soil and bag it up for him to help his new garden acclimate. Urudith thinks it was silly and a waste of time, but sometimes the dirt in a garden is important.
Had another sparring match with K'dar, lost again but at least I got a hit in this time. Not that he seemed to care at all, just shook it off and knocked me straight in the jaw. He's got enthusiasm, but he's not the best at dodging. I told him to work on it. It doesn't matter if he can take most hits, because one day he'll find a fist he can't just stand up to.
Thinking of taking a bit of a gamble and letting my apprentices take a crack at being Weyrsecond, just have them on a rotating cycle from a couple weeks to a couple months at the most depending on how well they're doing. I'm not ready to make it official yet, I still have some thinking to do. Again, the old man seems to think I'm off my rocker, but I reminded him he'd get to more actively boss around some of those "damn youths" he enjoys complaining about.

It is nice to be in my own quarters again, though I miss all of the pillows. I will have to requisition some more for myself. I'm going to look into getting taste testers for the goldriders at least, maybe myself. Sure, with how long it takes for the poison to affect someone there's a chance that someone would have already eaten tainted food before the taster falls ill, but even if that's the case the healers can get started sooner, hopefully save more lives.
I haven't told Mulrissa yet, but I don't care if she thinks it's a silly idea. I'll pay the drudges myself for taking on the added risk. At least I can feel like I'm doing something to help try and do something about the poisonings.
Urudith is concerned about the situation in Ista Weyr, and by that I mean he's worried about Thallyath. I've gone ahead and sent a letter requesting updates. I'm not in fit enough shape to fly yet, so the old man will have to wait a bit longer to see the ladies in person.

I am so tired. At least B'jin is already awake so he should survive. They said Nerili fell from the ledge... but was she pushed? Did she jump? I can't imagine any reason for her to jump. Even if she wanted to end it all she had a dragon to take her Between, unless the dragon didn't want to I guess... maybe she'd been poisoned and didn't want to deal with the pain? That's stupid too I think.
This can't have been an accident, it probably has something to do with the attack on B'jin. I'll have to try and get more out of him when he's had more time to heal.
I'm not sure death is good enough for this asshole when he finally gets caught. Been a long time since I've skinned anything bigger than a rabbit, but I think I can manage.

I guess there was something behind those rumors about brownriders after all. Not sure if it was more than just those two though, and why would D'ser go after N'mall now? Maybe Ashara wasn't supposed to be a victim?

At least she had that little menace around. And I guess I should try to add some women to my healer roster so that Sir isn't a problem every time Cazan needs a checkup.
She seemed in good spirits about the whole eye situation, but that may have been the drugs talking.

Definitely going to increase patrols in the Weyr. Who the fuck is behind this shit that they can take out a gold with two escorts? Has to be more than one person... right? If it was just the healer along that would be one thing, he doesn't have a dragon to sound an alert, but there were two dragons there, if one of the riders was attacked the other should have been alerted.
My head hurts and I don't know if it's still lingering effects of that damn muffin or just this whole situation in general.

Found a boy in the woods when I went camping, he'd gotten himself mangled a bit. Took him back to the healers to get patched up. Boy's got talent though, managed to GRAVELY insult the old man despite being mute. Chir's his name, doesn't have any family so I guess I'll just turn him into a candidate with a little help. He's about Siro's age so this'll be fine. I'm sure Rissa [there's a skip of the pen and then some frantic scribbling] FUCK I should probably tell her about that. I better get her one of those fancy snacks she likes...

Well that was odd. K'dar asked if I'd just punch him. It made sense after I'd calmed him down enough to talk, but... well I suppose the random times he shows up with black eyes and other bruises make sense now.
Don't know if I'll ever want to spar with him again though.
Anyway, I'm not sure how present either K'dar or T'ryn will be while their other brothers are in the infirmary. Nasty business. I'll be canceling that camping trip I was planning to make sure I'm available until they're both ready to get back to work. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a proper bereavement leave. I'll need to check the patrol lists too and make sure they're up to date as well. I don't know if this is related to what happened in Fort or even last year, but I don't like it.
