741.02.09 | Auspicious Failure - August - 09.Feb.20

She hadn't impressed.

It wasn't surprising, though she'd been a bit sad about it, given the reactions and prods of the golds when she'd touched them August had known they were not going to be for her. That hadn't kept her from hoping and wanting while she stood and watched others do what she didn't seem capable of doing. She knew, of course, that she was capable. She'd been searched after, but August could help but think perhaps Brixith and R'kar had made a mistake and she was better off at home doing what she had started her life doing. She was feeling sorry for herself and she knew it.

She kicked at the piece of wood that lay in her path as she walked. She didn't know where she was going, only that she was walking. Head came up as the stick caught her attention when it hit the ground and she swiveled back around to pick it up. It would make a fine creation, she thought to herself as she hefted it in her hand. It had a good weight and her curiosity was piqued. Maybe she could find more wood to make things. It had always helped before when she was feeling down in the dumps and she was certain now would be no different.

She knew there was more to her sadness than just not impressing. She missed her family and she missed her son. Perhaps it was time for a visit and she wondered who she could get to take her to the hold to see her son. She had a mind to hold him in her arms and slather his face with kisses while he squealed. The image of her growing son squealing at her kisses brought a chuckle and a grin to her face. Yes, perhaps finding someone to take her home would be best. It would be difficult coming back to the weyr but she had no doubts that she would.

She sighed as she swung her stick back a forth beside her as she walked. Dark brown eyes scanned the ground for more and her mind was definitely not on her surroundings. She was focused on her prize, not on anyone who might get in her way.

Aederyn huffed and dug her heels into the ground, pausing and unbuckling her water skin from where it was nestled tightly against her thigh. Swish and spit, then swish and swallow. The routine was familiar to her. She was glad to be bringing a message pouch up to the Weyr again. It had been about a month since the Hatching and she wanted to check on R’dal and his friend who had gotten hurt. She breathed deeply and evenly, allowing her heart rate to slow and settle. She shook her muscles out and set off again at a brisk walk, allowing herself to calm, though she couldn’t quite settle the buzz of excitement at the idea of being close to the Weyr again. Close to dragons again…

As per usual when she thought of the massive creatures, (which was more and more lately), Rudi dived down from his position flying high above her head, chittering and scolding. She snickered and snatched at his tail, letting the graceful brown slip easily through her fingers to swoop upwards once more. He was playfully jealous, how dare she dream of Impressing anything other than him?! No…she didn’t dream of that, did she? A small smile played at her lips. She was a runner. She ran messages. Could she still run messages with a dragon? Or rather, FLY messages? At least the Weyr seemed to appreciate females who knew how to work and were good at their jobs…what job could she possibly have at a Weyr…she shook her head. She was in a spot, indeed. Her father wouldn’t permit her to move farther up in her current craft, though she did love running…running was what she was born for. She had no other talent developed enough for use outside of that, either…what could she possibly do? And what could she do that a Weyr might find useful? She sighed. Running would have to do for now. It’s what she loved, what she was good at, and what she was bred, born, and built for.

Rudi’s chirps changed, from silly and easy to a light warning tone. There was someone close by up ahead. He apparently didn’t think it was anything to be concerned about, or else he’d have returned to her with his eyes whirling to say so. No, this wasn’t a threat. It wasn’t long before the person came into view…a young woman close to her own age, maybe older. She squinted, then gasped and bit her lip when she recognized her. She was at the Hatching! She was a Candidate! Aederyn didn’t know her name, but she recognized the face and build as one of the girls from the Sands that day. The woman was waving a stick around, and seemed very focused and lost in thought.

They were, for the moment, going to be walking in the same direction…What would be more awkward, walking with someone for a time and attempting to talk? Or walking in silence? Aederyn gulped. Neither prospect seemed stellar. Well, if it was too miserable she could always run ahead…She adjusted her message pouch against the small of her back and stretched her stride to approach.

“On your left.”

She started hard, stick flinging to the side as her body jumped sideways. "Oh!" she breathed as the voice came out of nowhere, such was the depths of her thoughts. "I didn't see you," she continued as she held out a hand to stop the runner from going on, "I didn't hit you did I?" That would be terrible and the thought of it made her brows furrow with concern. She squinted just slightly as she took a look at the girl. She was familiar but August didn't know her. Maybe she saw her running around the weyr from day to day.

"Can you walk?" she asked quickly, "Or take a break or whatever its called?" She hoped so. August was so lost inside her head after Arradissicath's hatching that she needed the company to keep herself out of it. Maybe this girl would give her that option. She also needed to make more friends so this was a perfect opportunity to do just that. "How is it being.... A runner?" she asked as she squinted at the girl's knots.

She wasn't altogether knowledgeable in all the various crafts on Pern, woodcraft was the thing she was most interested in but it wouldn't kill her to learn about another. "My name's August," she went on as she swung the stick in her hand softly, "Whats yours?"

“Oh, no, you didn’t hit me. And even if you did, that would be my own fault for not paying attention to my surroundings.” She shrugged, shaking out the muscles in her legs as she started walking again, nodding at the girl’s question on taking a break. She was glad of the brief respite. She’d been running all day already.

She paused, considering the question of being a runner. She was glad to find someone else who knew of her craft. Aederyn saw Runners as the rarely seen, under appreciated craft of Pern that were sometimes even made the butt of jokes, but with bigger, more important jobs to do, they tended to just blow that off and keep on running. They were the craft that, if they all suddenly disappeared, Pern would likely trip over itself and wonder what happened, yet people seldom knew Runners existed. She liked that ‘working in the background’ sense of purpose. “It’s…interesting.” She finally said, and continued walking.“We get to travel a lot, but for all of that travel we hardly know what’s happening outside of our runner stations because we spend so much time alone on the traces. We get a lot of time to think.” She quirked a shoulder in a combination of another shrug and working the tired muscles there. She giggled. “I think you might be the first non-runner I’ve seen in over a week.” She walked alongside the girl for a few paces as she seemed to consider this, and responded to the belated introduction. “Aederyn.” She snapped a lazy salute with a smile as they walked.

If she remembered correctly, and the girl being out here by herself confirmed it, August hadn’t Impressed on that crazy day…she wasn’t sure how a candidate would feel about not Impressing, and didn’t want to possibly make an enemy of this new girl. She considered her next words carefully. “Are you from around here? I saw you at the Weyr a while back when I was here with a friend…”
