740.08.28 | The Making of a Lady - Mylorah - 16.Oct.19

Mylorah puffed another breath of frustration-- or as much as she could with all the restricting layers she currently wore--as more measurements were taken. Some had already been taken, but that had been before the properly lady-like undergarments had been donned. She supposed maybe those ones were so they could make her more or maybe they combined some of the layers into one; that would be nice. But now she was wearing what Tazikel and Itherida assured her were very normal and very proper for wearing under what would eventually be the perfect yet also very proper gown for a party at a Lord Holder's home.

She thought she knew what she was getting into when she accepted the invitation both to the party and then to go shopping for a dress. Mylorah knew her dresses were fine for things like going to a Gather as just another Weyr whore--a term she had heard before but it didn't bother her--but they wouldn't do for an actual party with Lord Ista and other lords probably in the same room as her! She loved the fancy dress T'ryn had bought her but it wouldn't do this time. So the morning was dedicated to shopping. She didn't even like the act and hated it even more when she found out she actually had to try everything on.

Thank goodness for Itherida! Tazikel had been smart to bring his sister-in-law along to help find what was needed. Mylorah hadn't a clue and Tazikel sometimes played up his charming and proper lordly self and waited outside as Itherida helped her dress. Although no matter how charming he was, he still almost got smacked for his 'yes, it's part of the procedure' when she asked if she had to try on every single dress that caught his eye. But Itherida was nice and Mylorah enjoyed chatting with her even as she wrapped her up in torture devices disguised as dresses.

In the end, it didn't even matter! Tazikel had decided none were perfect and dragged her along to the tailor that was now draping coloured fabric around her. Mylorah assumed they were now deciding what colour would suit her best since the style seemed to have been decided on--or narrowed down. She lost track of everything an hour ago. All she recalled at this point was something about how the date of a son of Tillek doesn't buy off the rack and they needed something custom made and unique. Lucky her.

"Can't we just go with black and call it done? Everyone looks good in black, right?" Not that she even owned anything in black but she had darker colours and thought they were nice on her so close enough. One look at her audience and Mylorah knew that wouldn't work and she sighed again.

RE: 740.08.28 | The Making of a Lady - Z'kel - 08.Jan.20

Shopping with Mylorah was an adventure. It may be mean of him, but Tazikel was enjoying how out of her depth Mylorah was. Just a little, with how appalled she was by all the layers and underthings and how stiff most of this prim dresses were. There had been a number of dresses Tazikel had suggested she try on he never had any intention of letting her walk away with, he just wanted to see the disgruntled face brought on by the absurd garments. Itherida, tragically, knew what he was doing and after the first three like that she gave him a disapproving look and loudly started suggesting other dresses - ones that were actual possibilities.

Still, none were quite right. Despite the entertainment of Mylorah in fussy Holder dresses, Tazikel wasn’t that cruel - he decided it would be best to get her something custom, that looked prim and proper but wasn’t quite as stuffy. Let no one say he wasn’t thoughtful of the women in his life. Even if Mylorah didn’t appreciate it just yet in the fitting room.

“Everyone does look good in black, however it’s also not the kind of thing you wear to a party unless you’re trying to prove you’re straightlaced and boring. That’s not what we’re going for, so no black dresses today.” Tazikel said, peeking his head around the dividing screen to make a face at her.

“In theory you could probably wear Ista colors, since you are from Ista Weyr, after all, but honestly, Ista colors are awful. Bright orange? Ugh, no.” Itherida made a comment about the darker, more subtle oranges usually worn by Istan ladies - which she knew well enough, since her sister was an Istan lady now - and Tazikel pouted at her. “We’re ruling out options, Theri, don’t put them back in. No orange. You’ll thank me,” he told Mylorah very seriously.

“Your Gather dress was dark blue, wasn’t it? That was a good color on you.” Tazikel thought out loud, and the tailor rushed to get all the dark blues he had to display for them. “Maybe a dark blue and and then a contrast color.” As the tailor rushed to lay out more fabric samples next to the various blues Tazikel gestured to the display. “What do you think, Mylorah? Any of these look nice to you?”

Mylorah was debating if she could get away with cancelling her acceptance of the invitation and still get to keep in touch with Tazikel as colours were bickered over. But when the tailor ran around fetching different bolts of fabric and she saw how hard he was trying to please all of them, she felt extremely guilty. Itherida was helping her into the garments and making pleasant suggestions that might work, Tazikel wanted to find something that was perfect for her, and that dear tailor... he had the most at stake, didn't he? If he couldn't create something that she liked then that would displease Tazikel which meant the Lord Holder's family would never consider using him and it could even sway some other lords.

Well phooey.

It wasn't like she was going to get out of this anyway and she knew her style would be too scandalous for a party, especially on the arm of a lord so she sucked it up and tried not to whine or pout too much.

"I like that one," Mylorah pointed after considering the blues for a minute. It wasn't too dark but a nice shade all the same. The tailor nodded at her selection and moved some of the accent colours around to help highlight what would work nicely with it. Again, she studied them, not really sure what would be best but since neither of her companions had vetoed any of the options she figured nothing would be considered wrong. Finally, she pointed at a red.

"Okay, colours are done. What comes next?" She tried to sound chipper and even smiled at the tailor/ Tazikel still earned her wrinkling her nose at him and then her tongue sticking out when the tailor turned away to fuss with something else.
