738.10.30 | Thin Air - R'dare - 30.Oct.17

R’dare stared at the cave off a bit from where Madiquel had excitedly and secretly led him to. His damn dragon was in on it as well. She had whispered to Kaidaisicalth, likely giving the directions and encouraging him to ask Edath for coordinates. He had found out upon mounting up and promising to trust them both that Madiquel had found this place when out exploring with R’dal not too long ago. Apparently, according to Kaidaisicalth after some silent prodding for explanations, they hadn’t had enough time to explore the cave they found when getting ready to leave and his wonderful close friend with benefits had suggested he go with their young friend when she next wanted to go. Payback was going to be a bitch for R’dal, he thought with another glance at the cave.

Maybe it wouldn’t be too bad. The entrance seemed nice and wide so the cave itself could be the same. He also kept a glow stone in his riding satchel for emergencies. He could do this. He just had to smile and tease Madiquel like usual and she’d never suspect anything was off and they could get through their exploring quickly. Be home for dinner even. Assuming they even went over there. It looked like a hop, skip, and a jump across some rocks in the shallow water. Maybe he could just distract her enough that they hung out on the water’s edge. Looking away from the cave, he felt if he didn’t give it any attention then it didn’t exist.

“This is a great area! Secluded so we can hide here from chores and nap the afternoon away,” he chuckled and rubbed Kaidaisicalth’s neck. “Should we give napping a try first or swim?” He knew she’d know his vote was napping as it always was but he was letting it be lady’s choice.

RE: 738.10.30 | Thin Air - M'quel - 30.Oct.17

Madiquel was exuberant in her excitement, chattering away without pause from the moment she’d found R’dare. She’d originally wanted to go ack to the cave with R’dal, but he’d been busy when she asked, and suggested ‘Dare as company, and a chance to surprise him with their discovery, and tell him all about it later. In too good of a mood to be sullen about a change in companions, Madiquel had darted off to find R’dare, and secret him away to the hidden cove where she and R’dal had spied a cave hiding in the rocks a few days ago. Madiquel was delighted, and slid excitedly off the blue dragon before R’dare could even undo her straps like he usually did for her.

“C’mon!” She begged, back tracking to her friend and grabbing the hand not petting his dragon. “We can nap and swim later!” Or any day, really! She didn’t mention it, but she had a feeling the little path to the cave would get flooded when the tide came in. It was on the way out at the moment, revealing a path of no doubt slippery stones to hop across. Not letting go of R’dare’s hand, she pit all her weight against him until he gave and she could drag him towards the start of the path. “I’ll go first!” She said, all excitement once more. “Don’t slip!” The rocks looked slippery, some of them covered in shells and seaweeds.

Letting go of R’dare’s hand reluctantly – she didn’t know his fear, but she could read his hesitation – Madiquel carefully moved to the first stepping stone, and jumped onto it, wobbling as her balance shifted, and she bent forward to catch herself on her fingertips. Balance reclaimed, she flashed a smile over her shoulder before moving to hop onto the next rock. It got easier as she went, and she made it to the entrance without any major issues. Turning around, she grinned at R’dare and gestured for him to join her. Then she slipped into the entrance of the cave, and looked around curiously.

The entrance was large, but it tampered into a smaller path towards the back, which promised a corridor to… somewhere. Madiquel grinned, and dug out a small carry case that had a handful of glows in it, holding it up so they illuminated the area. She moved towards the back of the cave, and peered into the corridor. It was definitely big enough for her, and R’dare should fit without doing any more than maybe sucking his belly in, if even that. He might need to duck a little though, she decided, holding her hand up as if to measure his height against the tunnel.

“In here! C’mon!” And without waiting to see if he was following, she set off down it.

R’dare sighed as he gave in and followed. It wouldn’t do to put up a fuss. He really didn’t want to ruin her good mood and take away this day of exploring. He knew how hard the landslide had been on her with losing her mother and then taking care of her father that was struggling not to lose his mind. Madiquel deserved having a part of her childhood back, even if she was now fourteen and they were both technically too old for such things. Besides, it was just a cave, likely didn’t even go back that far and was just an open space carved by the water over time.

That didn’t mean R’dal was getting off that easily though. Tell Edath to tell Rist that he can find new as for tonight. And tomorrow night. R’dare grumped at his dragon before following behind Madiquel a few paces. He belatedly reached out a hand to stop her from jumping across the rocks when he saw they were a bit treacherous but she was already off and hopping. His breath caught when she nearly fell and sighed with relief when she righted herself and continued on like nothing happened. When she beckoned for him to follow again, R’dare gave a smile and started his trek across. He was a bit taller with longer legs so he didn’t find the spacing to be too much of an issue but he did almost lose his footing twice due to the slippery flat surfaces.

When he made it across, Madiquel was already zipping inside. She wasn’t kidding about not resting! He made it across one obstacle, now all he had to do was walk inside. Which he did after three deep breaths to steady his nerves.

“I’d think you were trying g to kill me but then you’d have to carry any of the treasures we find back on your own,” and the whole lack of dragon thing by that point would make getting g back to Fort Weyr a bit tricky since they were apparently down near Southern Boll. But those happy thoughts weren’t needed as he focused on his surroundings to decide if he liked them or not. It turned out that if he was any taller than he’d enjoy the exploring hunched over with a backache by the time they left. For once he was thankful for not getting a few more inches out of his dad’s genes. The low ceiling currently didn’t bother him too much thanks to some shorter rooms that were used for storage. He felt he might even be fine if they stayed within sight of the entrance and there weren’t any tunnels or narrowing paths.

Oh.

He saw where Madiquel was and frowned when he figured out her intention. He wandered a bit closer to examine the narrow tunnel. “How long do you think it is? Wonder if it opens into another large room.” That would be nice. He might be a leader to handle a short walk into another one area. Maybe. It wasn’t like it was something he had tested out since realizing he much preferred the open space of the beach or forest to, well, whatever laid before him.
