2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Beastcraft
Primary Craft Hall: Keroon
Other Key Locations: Katz Field Hold is host to regular beastfairs and competitions. The focus in Katz Field Hold is runners, but occasionally other herdbeasts such as oxen might be featured.
Current Craftmaster:
Craft Summary

More than just the untrained raising of a farm animal or herding sheep, Beastcraft is a very broad field of study. Craftsmen dedicate themselves to the health, care, and management of animals on Pern; this includes breeding, training, and population management of all domesticated creatures though some choose to focus on the management of wild creatures as well. It’s a physically and mentally demanding craft, but is essential for the survival of both Holds and Weyrs for the care of working animals and the production of food. The Beastcrafters have a working knowledge of artificial insemination and successfully practice it, though they do not remember where this information came from.

Specialties
• Animal Healing - These beastcrafters specialize in the medical treatment of animals, including dispensing drugs to them, handling birthing complications, and performing surgeries.
• Canines - Those who specialize in canines tend to focus on breeding lines of dogs for specific purposes such as herding, hunting, or other useful tasks, as well as training them. Dogs may also be kept purely as companions, and a canine specialist can assist with their training and health.
• Herdbeasts - Encompassing a variety of livestock including cows, sheep, goats, and pigs, this is a rather common specialty within the craft. It is occasionally further broken down into Meat Production, Dairy Production, Wool Production, or a focus on a species as a whole such as a Bovine or Sheep specialist.
• Pest Control - These beastcrafters focus on studying wild pest animals, including tunnelsnakes, trying to learn their patterns of behavior and life cycles to better mitigate any potential damage they can cause as well as determine efficient ways of killing them.
• Poultry and Avians - Chicken, ducks, and geese are valuable for egg, down, and meat production and are the most common subject of a beastcrafter’s focus, though they work with domesticated wherries and occasionally other avians as well.
• Runnerbeasts - Also known as horses, these are very valuable to those who have no dragons.
Apprenticeship Info

One of the first things an apprentice learns is how to safely handle handles without incurring severe injury to themselves or to the creatures in their care. Injuries from kicks, headbutts, and bites are especially common in the early days. Another important skill taught early on is first aid along with basic care and maintenance requirements. They also learn to use and maintain essential equipment such as harnesses and tack.

Much of an apprentice’s time will be spent doing the more menial tasks for a variety of creatures, and moving about as needed to different beastholds to get as much exposure as possible. Once apprentices have settled on a specialty and have also satisfied the more general areas of their study they begin to work more closely with journeymen and masters in their chosen field, usually providing assistance and sometimes placed in charge of a smaller breeding or training project of their own.

Even after they’ve chosen their specialty they must still maintain their generalist studies. Before even being considered for advancement, every apprentice must demonstrate that they can milk a dairy beast, and also must have delivered at least one herdbeast calf under the direct supervision of a journeyman or master.

Journeymen Info

Some Journeymen, especially those with an animal healing focus, will travel on circuit to help the smaller cotholds within a region. Otherwise they will find an assignment with a hold, receiving compensation that they negotiate on their own terms either in the form of marks, or even land to perhaps work on their own breeding lines or livestock rearing. Such established crafters may have apprentices come and assist them as well.

Even journeymen who have a stable posting in a Hold tend to travel a lot. Sometimes this is just a small trip to a beholden minor hold in need of aid, but there are also trips to Gathers, Beast Fairs, or even to another Beastcrafter’s kennels or livery to trade for new equipment or animals. Trips back to the Beastcraft Hall in Keroon are also occasionally made to ensure that they’ve kept up on the latest research and developments in their craft and share anything new they’ve discovered.

Attitude on Women

Since this craft has such a broad scope and can be overwhelming, girls and women wishing to become apprentices are regarded with condescension and doubt, and occasionally to make sure they aren’t just there to “play with cute animals”, they might even be assigned more than their fair share of the filthier tasks as if to test their resolve. Steadfast persistence might make such unduly harsh treatments lighten up, but it will still be a long and slow path towards any advancement in rank, and some masters may never accept a woman into their specialty as a journeyman.

Harpercraft
Primary Craft Hall: Fort Hold
Other Halls: Hall Domaize - A large barn-like structure in Keroon where wood is seasoned for portraiture and probably musical instrument making. Ista has a huge Harper Hall some Lord built for his journeyman harper wife who he was stupid in love with. He wanted it to be a big rival music center to the main hall. It’s almost always empty except during Gathers. It’s hilarious.
Current Craftmaster: Masterharper NPC, assisted by Master Ganderfel
Craft Summary

Far more than musicians and performers, the Harpers of Pern are educators, journalists, historians, officiators, advisors, arbiters, and judges. With such a broad and far reaching influence and power there is a heavy expectation that a journeyman knows how to properly conduct themselves if they're to be let out of the Hall, Harpers may find themselves in the presnce of Lords and drudges alike after all. While charm, general frivolity, flirtations, and dramatic mannerisms are common (and occasionally even encouraged), a Harper must be able to perform his duties seriously when required and anything that reflects poorly on a Harper's legal judgement or ability to arbitrate fairly will result in a recall to the Hall and potentially serious repercussions.

Specialties
• Archivist - The keepers of archives, monitor the safety and updating of records. Scribes, book binders.
• Composer - New songs who dis?
• Drummers - Workers of drum towers, code experts.
• Espionage - A secretive branch of the Harpers, most people within the Harper Hall aren't even aware of this particular specialty, much less outsiders. Specially trained, frequently sent out on circuits under the guise of performing other duties, they secretly collect information for the Masterharper and do other unsavory deeds. Members of this specialty frequently have a code name along with a more "acceptable" public facing specialty. No one may ask to join this specialty, they are chosen for the role and are always very heavily vetted.
• Instrumentalist - In addition to playing their instruments of choice well, they must also become talented crafters of those instruments.
• Theatre - Aside from training actors and putting on plays, theatre specialists also work on oration skills and physical talents, including choreography for fight scenes, dancing, juggling, and other physically based performances.
• Voice, Instrument and Musical Theory - special teaching positions.
Apprenticeship Info

Apprentices sponsored to the Craft by their local Masters are forwarded to the Harper Hall for further evaluation. If an apprentice is accepted by the Hall, he or she is given general instruction in all of the more well known traditional Harper skills - oration, instrument making, composition and writing, and singing. In order to remain an apprentice, much less advance, they must demonstrate proficiency in playing at least one instrument besides percussion. If, after this initial instruction, they shows notable talent in one branch of the Craft, the student may become apprenticed to the specific Master in charge of that specialty. Not all apprentices are promoted to journeyman. Those who do not are usually kept on as assistants, background performers, stage hands, or serve in other capacity as support staff.

Journeymen Info

Journeymen in the Harper Hall have the option of remaining in the crafthall, going on circuit as a route rider, or being stationed in a Hold, Weyr, or other Craft Hall to either fulfill an existing contract or negotiate a new one. Those who remain in the Harper Hall may assist in teaching apprentices as well as performing administrative duties. Journeymen who specialize in choir are taught to conduct, while those who sing or play instrumentation may be called upon to teach paying students or perform for functions. Those who choose to take contracts may work with numerous other Harpers or be the sole harper depending on the size of the contract and the depth of the client's pockets (or their importance to Harper Hall), providing teaching and entertainment to the Holders. Harpers going out on circuit will ride a particular circuit on horseback, teaching at some smaller Minor Holds or cotholds, spending a small amoutn of time to teach, evaluate and leave lessons, update information and maps, bring news, and collect news to carry on to their next stop. Harpers on Circuit are typically gone for at least a month or two at a time.

A tactful journeyman may also be asked to dispense justice, officiate at weddings, and conduct funerary services. If the disputers who requested his services are not satisfied with his decision, they can appeal to the Masterharper. Beyond him, they may go to the local Lord Holder or still higher, to a conclave of Lord Holders. If a Lord Holder reverses a harper's decision, it is only courtesy to let the harper know why. The Lords need the Harper Hall as much as the Hall needs the goodwill of the Lord Holders.

Attitude on Women

For most women, finding a Master or other Patron to sponsor them as a potential apprentice in the first place is usually the first hurdle. Once they’ve caught someone’s eye though, they may be accepted as an apprentice as readily as any potential male apprentices. Not all of the specialties and masters are as willing to accept women for further training as journeymen however. The vocal specialists such as those who specialize in singing or choral work, along with archivists may be more willing to tap a woman than others; they are rarely chosen for teaching positions.

Healercraft
Primary Craft Hall: Fort Hold
Other Halls: Minor regional Halls in Benden Hold and Southern Telgar Hold. The Benden Hold facility has a general focus (promising apprentices wishing to specialize are sent to the main Hall in Fort), while Southern Telgar has a focus on pediatrics and geriatrics.
Current Craftmaster: Verec (Zan)
Craft Summary

One of the oldests Crafts, healers treat injuries and ailments and also provifde training in basic first aid when requested. They also handle the dead, cleaning and embalming them if required, and otherwise handling their disposal if arrangements are not already made.

Some healers, especially those in remote holds, are generalists who prefer to remain well rounded with no chosen specialty. In cases where a specialist’s expertise is required, it’s common to have a specialist brought in rather than try to move a seriously ill patient. Rarely in emergencies, a dragonrider may be used to perform an ambulance run and move the patient.

Specialties
• Dentistry - In addition to caring for and repairing teeth and treating gums, those who specialize in dentistry also handle issues of the jaw and face.
• Diagnostics - The study of symptoms and signs displayed by a patient to determine what disease or condition is affecting the patient in order to better provide accurate treatment.
• Geriatrics - They specialize in caring for the elderly, both through prevention and treatment of diseases and disabilities.
• Midwife - All apprentices are taught to assist with births, but some apprentices who are unsuited for more advanced studies (either through temperament or ability) make this their specialty and work under the guidance of a Journeyman or Master of Obstetrics.
• Obstetrics - A specialist in pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They handle complications and emergencies that pop up during the pregnancy and the birth and also treat issues with recovery.
• Pediatrics - Specializing in the medical care and development of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
• Pharmacy - The research, creation, and administration of drugs and the treatment of exposure to toxins. Due to the research required to discover new drugs and their effects, Pharmacy specialists also serve as the Pernese version of toxicologists.
• Respiratory Ailments - These specialists work to treat illnesses of the lungs as well as other conditions that might affect a patient’s ability to breathe.
• Surgery - While all healers may have to put a patient under the knife at one point or another, but one who specializes in surgery is especially good at more complicated procedures and handling complications that can arise during a surgery.
• Trauma - The treatment of physical wounds and injuries caused by external sources (accidents or violence), such as breaks, lacerations. There is a focus on surgery and physical therapy to allow for proper recovery of the patient.
• Urology - These specialists focus on the study and treatment of diseases and conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive system.
Apprenticeship Info

Healercraft apprentices learn on the job, and most are taught basic skills in the regional halls across Pern. Apprentices often take up midwifery, a much needed skill across Pern.

Journeymen Info

Journeymen Healers with a talent for research and teaching have the option of staying in the Hall to help with teaching new apprentices and conducting research to help further the Craft as a whole. Otherwise, Journeymen Healers are sent out to fulfill staffing contracts with Weyrs or Holds or they can assist in minor regional Halls.

Attitude on Women

Since the Healer Hall and Fort Weyr came to an arrangement to allow Fort’s female candidates to train as healers, the Healercraft has been more welcoming to women as healers. It still takes them longer than their male counterparts to reach equivalent ranks, but reaching the rank of journeyman is attainable for women.

Seacraft
Primary Craft Hall: Tillek Hold
Other Halls: High Reaches Hold - Renowned for their Ship Building; Half-Circle Sea Hold - Ship Building and Fishing; I think Gulf Stones Hold had some fishing shit?
Current Craftmaster:
Craft Summary

The Seacraft (occasionally also referred to as Fishercraft), focuses on ships and the ocean. All four of the primary specialties are physically demanding, and the few tasks that aren’t tend to be quite mentally demanding as well. Many of the specialties have some overlap, and it’s wet work for everyone involved, including those safely on the docks handling logistics and cargo. Craftsmen are expected to work in all weather conditions, though during threadfall, all dock work is moved into port caves. At sea the established procedure is to flood the decks, bunker down, and sail headlong into the leading edge of the fall to try and break through to the other side as quickly as possible, if the ship has enough momentum the sails will be secured to keep them from being damaged by thread.

Specialties
• Dockers - All manner of dockwork from moving cargo to managing harbor logistics.
• Fisher - Fishermen. While many fishermen can also serve as basic hands on a ship, not every able bodied sailor can handle the work of a fisher. This encompases both line and rod fishing, net casting, and pot setting for crustaceans.
• Sailing - Captains are usually masters but a particularly skilled journeyman with significant backing from a master or someone of political importance to the craft may become one. Sr. Journeymen may become officers on a ship. Apprentices are usually assigned the most basic of tasks on the ship. Some Sailors become even more specialized and focus on navigation.
• Shipwright - Ship builders work either in the docks, though some may also work on a ship itself as a ship's bosun or bosun's mate.
Apprenticeship Info

In the Seacraft, apprentices start out as cabin boys or lure tiers. On fishing boats, apprentices will perform basic tasks such as tying lures, repairing nets, and polishing wood and metal surfaces. On smaller skiffs, apprentices are taught by journeymen on how to handle the equipment and use various types of nets. They are also taught to copy maps.

Journeymen Info

Journeymen in the Seacraft typically do the majority of the hard work on a vessel, setting nets and hauling in the catch. They may also teach apprentices to work with the equipment and tend sail. Journeymen also work alongside apprentices to clean the catch. Journeymen are also taught to make maps of the major sea trade routes and safe moorings. Journeymen on a ship are ranked according to nautical tradition: seaman able-bodied, second mate, and first mate.

Attitude on Women

Between persistent rumors that women on ships are unlucky and the sheer amount of distraction they can cause in cramped quarters out at sea, women are not generally welcome in the Seacraft. Those that do manage to somehow become apprentices, can expect to take a very long time to reach journeyman if they get there at all.

Non-Hall Crafts
Dragonhealing
Key Locations: Fort Weyr, Ista Weyr
Key People: Led by the three founding and Head Dragonhealers:
Bluerider N'noa - Ista Weyr, Greenrider Eb'zer - Fort Weyr. Greenrider L'gan - Fort Weyr
Craft Summary

Originally lost when the dragon plague swept through the Weyrs and killed those trained in the craft, only some surviving records kept at the Healer Hall managed to survive. With Thallyath’s disastrous clutch in 740, research into the old art of dragonhealing was renewed in earnest by the three founders of this new version of the old craft. At present, the research efforts and experiences have placed this burgeoning craft on stable enough ground that anyone interested and capable may temporarily relocate to study and train in the craft.

Specialties
• Surgeon - More involved with the interior of the dragon than the exterior.
• Trauma - Specializing in accidents that cause traumatic injuries such as dislocations, breaks, and open wounds.
Apprenticeship Info

Those interested in taking up dragonhealing are temporarily relocated to Ista or Fort Weyrs to have lessons alongside other students under the guidance of Greenrider L’gan, Greenrider Eb’zer, or Bluerider N’noa. While there are the old recovered notes to read through, most of the lessons are practical and hands on, assisting the established dragonhealers as they tend to wounded and ailing dragons.

Journeymen Info

Once the founders deem the students established enough to be able to return to their home Weyrs and start up practices there, they are sent back to continue working independently. They are highly encouraged to take meticulous notes and more importantly to share those notes with the others in their craft. All potential anomalies are of interest, and since dragons are usually hardy creatures, any time they need care is considered an opportunity to research and learn.

Attitude on Women

Dragons are too precious to waste time worrying about whether an apprentice’s gender will impact their ability to heal or not. That said, women may still encounter difficulties especially from more traditionally minded riders.

Current Crafters

Runners
Key Locations: Runner stations and traces stretch cross most of Pern, taking shortcuts where wagons are too bulky to travel.
Craft Summary

Runners, either on foot or on horseback, carry written messages and parcels small enough to be carried along a network of Runner Stations set on carefully maintained trails known as traces. These Stations are where messages are picked up or dropped off, with each message logged and tracked by those manning the stations until they arrive at their destination.

It is a hard wearing career, and those who cannot run anymore either must work in the Stations helping with administrative and clerical tasks or work on trail maintenance. Those who cannot do either due to a lack of openings or ability must find other occupations. There have been concerns with waning business since the return of the Dragonriders, and the fees for delivery have been lowered to ensure continued business.

Apprenticeship Info

Run around, perform menial tasks assigned by station managers when not running around. Assist with basic trace maintenance.

Journeymen Info

Journeyman runners are considered reliable enough to handle longer stretches or higher priority packages. Senior Journeymen may occasionally assist with logistical and administrative matters within stations.

Attitude on Women

A woman who can run can at least deliver messages, but beyond that they aren’t seen as very capable or useful, they’re unlikely to make it to junior journeyman status, and never higher than that.
