The keening woke her and she jolted from her bed with a desperate thought flung towards Mizeath. Her panic rattled her and her fear quieted the return of her dragon's voice. "Mizeath!" she screamed, unable to hear the tiny and faint words of her gold, and she made a grab for Rislan as her hut shook. The boy began to cry as he clung to Ameris and she stumbled towards the door with another screech of her dragon's name.

Here! I am here! the gold shouted into the mind of her rider as she made a most inelegant landing next to the woman's home. The world was crumbling around Mizeath and the death of so many was almost more than she could take and she moaned as yet another went dark. Mizeath trembled as Ameris leaned against her, hugging Rislan tight, "We have to take him to A'mad, Mizeath." Mizeath nodded and knelt to allow her rider and the boy mount. Ameris shifted the boy until he was snug in front of her before giving the signal for Mizeath to go.

They made quick work across the ground and it wasn't long before Ameris found her wild eyed and unsurprisingly drunk father at his door. "Keep him safe. Don't leave, just stay here!" she demanded as she shoved the boy at his grandfather. A'mad nodded mutely before shuffling the weepy child inside. Ameris was thankful A'mad was the antisocial nut he was, the hut he occupied was far enough away from the weyr proper that it was guaranteed it would never be damaged. She cringed as Mizeath and Midranth began to keen again. "Come on, Mizeath, lets get to it!" she yelled as she mounted once more.

The weyr was in utter chaos as they reached the area most devastated. She didn't speak. Didn't say much to Mizeath as she jumped from the gold's back and waded into the muck. Mud was nothing to her. Just wet earth and she liked the dirt. She tugged a woman free and gave her a hug, sending her on her way. A weyrling was next, his dragon stuck in the mud and flailing, his boy crying as he flung mud about. She enlisted the aid of her prim and proper dragon and together they freed the dragon, but not without injury to herself. A flailing wing had caught her in the cheek and a bruise was sure to form. Mizeath rumbled in discontent at the red mark on her face and Ameris gave her a wane smile as she patted the golden hide.

The smile quickly faded as she tried to move. "Mizeath," she began as panic rose, "I do believe I'm stuck." You can not be stuck. That weyrling moved quite easily, so you can not be stuck, Mizeath reasoned. "No.." she replied as she jerked a leg, "I'm stuck." Mizeath began to dig carefully around her rider's legs. Frustration moved in as mud began to seep into the holes she had dug nearly as quick as she moved it. I'm going to call another to help, Mizeath said, I can not seem to move it fast enough. Ameris nodded her agreement.  Ameris could feel her concentration as the dragon called to another. Ah. Zhiranth and his rider come.

They didn't wait long for the brown and his rider and Ameris sighed in relief. She gave a rueful chuckle when she heard the echo of it from her dragon. The brown touched down a short distance away and she waved a hand to catch the attention of his rider. A shout was heard as the man jumped from the brown's back. And landed wrong. The man, B'ker, slipped and fell awkwardly and his body rolled towards her. A sickening crack echoed across the weyr and the man groaned as his eyes blinked at her. She could see him mouth a word before the light dimmed and a shriek from his dragon signaled B'ker's death. Ameris didn't have to look to know that Zhiranth had gone between. Her world rocked as another shudder of the earth had her whipping around. She screamed and flung her hands up in a futile attempt to block the wave of mud that rolled over the top of her. The last thing she remembered was the high pitched shriek as Mizeath screamed her name.

She came awake choking on mud.

Mizeath crooned soothingly from her station beside the tent that Ameris now called home. The woman had been distraught and sick for the better part of a week and Mizeath worried for her. It was so unlike the hardheaded, stubborn woman to be so withdrawn that Mizeath routinely peaked into Ameris' tumultuous thoughts. She had fought to sooth the chaotic things she saw there but it would seem that every night it would be for naught, as the woman dreamed different variations of that dreadful time. Are you al-... she got out before the woman she adored above all others flung the covers away and made a mad lunge for the doorway.

Ameris huddled against the tent as she retched. Her eyes watered and her nose ran as she emptied the contents of her stomach into the grass until there was nothing left to come up. She straightened, arms about herself as visions of her dream came thundering back. Mizeath set about covering the foul mess as she crooned again to Ameris. An errant thought and the woman was attempting to retch up what wasn't there. The tears choked her and the thoughts swamped her so much she didn't hear the steps that came towards her, but Mizeath did and the gold moved aside for the one person she was certain could make Ameris feel better.

Holy shat! That wasn't meant to be so long!

R’nya had ever been an early riser, and following the events that had left the majority of the Weyr under a quagmire of mud and muck, that morning was no different. The bronzerider, disinclined to take up temporary residency that was better left to those that needed it, instead spent his nights curled up comfortably against Xyreith’s side, hidden under the bronze dragon’s great wing. It was so similar to the past, when the only constant in the young man’s life had been his dragon, and death. Nightmares plagued him, but R’nya did well enough keeping such things to himself, and his days were occupied with helping each of his girls cope, and to pull themselves back together after all that had befallen them.

He didn’t breathe down their necks; with Xyreith in almost constant contact with each of the gold dragons, the man was quickly alerted whenever one of the young gold’s emotions spiked, even if the girl in question didn’t reach out to call the bronze’s attention to her plight: many of them didn’t. Nightmares were common, and the pair had quickly learned not to get too anxious when a dragon’s fear spiked in response to the terrors of the night – Xyreith had his own problems with R’nya’s own haunted memories, and wished not to dump those of the girls’ atop the poor man. R’nya was relentless, however, and he could tell well enough when Xyreith was keeping something from him.

Xyreith sighed softly to himself, not bothering to contest as R’nya slipped from his side and out from under his wing, the man sliding down to land lightly on bare feet without a word. Most of his clothing (for R’nya’s hut had not been affected by the landslide) had been donated to those that were working to build Aradissicath a Hatching Sands, before moving on to other aspects of the temporary Weyr. R’nya had not owned many pairs of boots to start with, but he was not disinclined to go barefoot so that others could protect their toes whilst building. It was of the utmost importance that Aradissicath have somewhere safe and secure and warm to lay her clutch, and he was beyond thankful that she hadn’t reached that stage before the world became a muddy mess.

The grass was wet with early morning dew, but he expected that would dry swiftly. The bronzerider padded both quickly and quietly from where he and Xyreith were spending their nights – a nicely central location where Xyreith could avidly watch the building of Aradissicath’s Hatching Sands, while letting R’nya trot between goldriders without too much hassle – towards where he knew Mizeath and Ameris spent their time. He gave the young gold a slight nod of greeting before slipping by her, right hand reaching out gently to smooth over Ameris’ back before his arm wrapped lightly around the girl’s shoulders.

“Easy, my dear.” Ameris often reacted instinctively when touched, and R’nya expected no less at all, when topped with nightmares and distress. At least the girl was standing straight enough not to elbow him in the crotch. He gave her enough time to recognise him, before pulling her gently to his chest and settling his chin atop her head as he hugged her lightly, one hand moving in soothing motions over her back while the other played lightly over her nightmare-ruffled hair. “Shh,” how could he ever make everything better again for his poor, wonderful girls?

Her first instinct had been to lash out with the touch along her back. Her body had stiffened and a hand moving before the gentle touch of Mizeath's voice and the soothing tone of the man next to her quickly killed the movement. A sob released from the knot in her throat as R'nya gathered her against him.

They wracked her body as scenes from the nightmare played host inside her thoughts. The only truth the nightmare had contained was the death of the man and his dragon. There had been no attempt to speak, no movement at all from the dead man. B'ker had died instantly when his fall had snapped his neck and Zhiranth had been eerily silent when he went between as Ameris had stared wide eyes at the lifeless face of the man she had barely known.

The chest beneath her cheek was wet when she finally gathered herself enough to pull away from him slightly. She found herself staring at a pair of bare feet as she collected her thoughts. Her chuckle was watery when she said, "R'nya. You haven't got any shoes on." A moment of her usual spirits shone in her eyes as she looked up into his face before it was clouded once more.

The fact that she had been crying and was once again soothed by the bronzerider was not lost on her. It would seem that R'nya would always come upon her at her weakest. She didn't mind it, she welcomed his calming influence. There was always a sense of safety attached to their encounters and Ameris would cherish them for the rest of her life.

"I saw them die," she began softly, "I saw them die and it's all my fault, R'nya. If I hadn't..." She swallowed hard as she fought against the gag that threatened. She couldn't retch on him. Retching would be a foul repayment, indeed, for his help.

R’nya shifted slightly, leaning back a little to peer down the gap between their bodies so he could see his own feet. He wriggled his toes, and then lifted an eyebrow as he turned his gaze to meet Ameris’. “I do not,” R’nya agreed, his tone conveying just the barest hint of amusement. It was a fleeting display, the bronzerider’s own features sobering as Ameris seemed to topple back into the reality of the moment.

He let her speak, remaining silent and watchful as she did so. When she faltered, he pulled her close again, ignoring the way her face had lost colour. If she puked on him, he would worry about that then; in the meantime, the girl was gently ordered to hush, R’nya’s voice both mild and resigned as he frowned over the top of Ameris’ head. “It is not your fault,” R’nya spoke gently, giving the girl a quick squeeze before releasing her and stepping back. His right arm wove lightly around her lower back and he urged her gently to walk. He did not intend to lead her far, just a few dragon lengths and back again, perhaps around a few of the random tents and dragon bodies that were littered about. Just enough to remove all focus from her mind and into mundane actions like walking.

“Accidents happen.” That was putting the whole fiasco of the landslide rather lightly, really, but R’nya knew from what had been shared with him via Xyreith, that what had Ameris so upset was certainly nothing more nor less than a truly horrific accident; Such terrible luck, to land so badly after years of dragonriding. He deeply wished she hadn’t been subjected to such a scene, that she didn’t blame herself. Wishes and what ifs were for more wistful thinking individuals than R’nya, however, and the bronzerider settled for giving Ameris another squeeze with the arm wrapped around her waist.

“There is nothing you could have done, my dear.” Pale blue eyes shifted from making sure he did not step on something uncomfortable, to glancing at the girl, and back again. “I am just thankful you are in one piece.” They’d all been so lucky… well, Tsuen had died, but R’nya had never considered the Weyrwoman to be amongst his girls (to be fair, the man was secretly as freaked out by that woman as the rest of the Weyr). To have all of them come through with minimal physical damage was amazing, and R’nya considered them all very lucky – even if he would never actually say as much. Seeing someone die as they attempt to help, losing a child, nearly drowning in the mud. R’nya barely suppressed a shudder of horror.

Physically his girls were fine. Emotionally? Mentally? Those were where the wounds were raw, and where they would remain raw for a long time.

She stared off into nothingness as R'nya wrapped her up in his arms again. She stood in his embrace, nearly rigid as she stood and tried to do as he said and hear the words that he insisted. Had she been a sweeter girl, a less damaged girl, she may have sank into him and wrapped her own arms around him. But she wasn't and she didn't. Too much guilt and too much damage in her short life made it so very difficult to give back the comfort she received.

"But how can it not be my fault? If I'd stayed with A'mad instead of insisting on playing the hero, B'ker would still be here," she insisted as she followed his movements, moving back and allowing an arm to be wrapped about her waist. A walk then. She could walk and she could think. The thought that had she just stayed where she was, none of this would have happened, rang through her mind. Over and over it played. So many scenarios. So many ways that things could have been different. If only she had just weathered the disaster in the safety of her father's hut. If only it hadn't rained so very much. If only.. If only..

He wove them around the tents and bodies lounging here and there and Ameris dwelled on the could have beens and if onlys. A distressed mutter came from Mizeath as she attempted to keep the two of them in her sights. She disliked the thoughts Ameris had at the moment. So much blame the woman placed upon her slender shoulders. So much guilt weighed her down and Mizeath didn't know how to make them stop. Another distressed mutter and the gold settled down to watch the procession of Ameris and R'nya.

"But am I in one piece, R'nya?" she whispered, "Am I really?" She didn't know if she was truly in one piece. Was she faulty now that she couldn't get a grip on her thoughts? Would her dreams reflect the horror of the disaster for the rest of her life? She had no answer for herself and her questions were desperate as she put them to him. There had been so much death. So much destruction and coping with it was proving to be far more difficult than she could have imagined.

While Ameris' lack of response to the gentle affection of a hug was not lost on R'nya, and while it upset him, (for how could anyone not enjoy the gentle warmth of being embraced?) the bronzerider made no comment on it, nor did he do anything to draw attention to the way in which she responded. Time, perhaps, would teach her that not every action was worth flinching in response to, and that hugs were rarely given in order to obtain something else in response. Perhaps, someday. Perhaps not, at the very least, however, the young woman had her dragon. A dragon's unquestioning love and loyalty could go a long way, even if another human could never get through the defensive walls.

"Ameris," R'nya spoke gently, pausing their walk to turn the girl to face him. He had mulled silently over her words for several paces before drawing her to a halt. "No, he would not." The words were softly spoken, gentle but firm, and R'nya studied the young goldrider's face carefully. How to explain his thought process to the poor girl, without seeming to write off her distress? "The moment we step onto the sands as children, we forfeit our lives, in order to protect the lives of others. In exchange, we are given a dragon, to make those battles easier to fight, and the burden easier to bear. B'ker was doing as any dragonrider worth his hide was doing that day - helping others. Just as you were, my dear." He paused, and offered Ameris' a gentle smile, though the expression was far more in his eyes than upon his lips.

"A true dragonrider puts the life of all others above his own, which is what B'ker did as he attempted to come and save you; just as you were doing, when you wound up needing his help. Do not regret the events of that day, Ameris." He paused again, still studying her face, before quietly shaking his head. "You are whole of body, my dear, and your dragon is whole. No matter how fractured your mind might become," he brushed stray strands of hair back from Ameris' face, "nor how many pieces you feel your heart might have broken into," two light fingers touched gently on Ameris' collarbone, below the base of her neck. Well above where R'nya knew the heart to be located, but far too much a gentleman to go poking her (or anyone!) there. "All the while you have Mizeath, you will always find a way to be one again."

Xyreith snorted softly as he walked past the pair of them, a low rumble rolling up from his belly as he agreed mildly with R'nya; their own bond had been all that pulled them through many years, particularly those that had followed the Plauge. A dragon's short memory, and their undying love for their human, made it easier for them to move on, but it also allowed for them to draw their human along with them. Or so Xyreith had found it so, in those dark days.

The large dragon stopped by Mizeath, and settled himself down comfortably beside her with a reassuring snort. He rarely spoke to anyone but R'nya, as he so rarely felt that words were necessary to relay the things that needed to be relayed. Why waste time on words, when one could simply gesture? When he was comfortably situated, Xyreith extended his nose to nudge at Mizeath, a gentle touch designed to be reassuring. Humans were ridiculous, and enjoyed torturing themselves by refusing to forget, or forgive, or move on, but they would never do anything to jeprodise their lifemate; Ameris would calm down, and her thoughts would settle... eventually.

They made sense, his words, and she found herself nodding along with them as she gazed again at his bare feet. The nonsensicalness of them brought a smile to her lips and she lifted her eyes to look at him. How utterly out of character for R'nya to run about barefoot. She was sure there was some kind of reason for it, but for now she would entertain herself with her flights of fancy.

Her brow furrowed with a frown. How could she not regret the events of that day? So much had been destroyed and so many people had perished. Perhaps she would not regret her very own actions, he was right. She was a dragonrider and she had been doing what dragon riders do. But she would regret the deaths and destruction always. She smiled sadly as her eyes tracked Xyreith when the big bronze walked around them. What she wouldn't give to have the memory of a dragon. To be able to forget the horrible things within days, what a treasure that must be.

"I'll try not to regret them, R'nya, but I will never forget them," she said stubbornly. More than just Ameris had been affected that day. She'd found out later that the father of her son had died in his hut, crushed by the tons of mud that had swept the weyr away. "Rislan's father is dead," she told him suddenly, "crushed to death, him and his dragon." She hadn't love the man. Had barely spoken to him after their son was born, Rislan never knowing the bronzerider who had fathered him. And now.. Now he'd never get the chance.

Mizeath took the presence of Xyreith in stride, welcoming it. She'd always like Xyreith. He was what a bronze should be. Strong, proud and regal, though she highly disapproved of his weyrling like antics with Aradissicath, and Mizeath was as comforted by his presence as Ameris was by R'nya's. She rumbled a greeting at the first touch of his nose, eyes still intent on the people before them and with a sigh she settled her great head on her forepaws to watch her rider tear herself apart with her grief.

R’nya nodded slightly at her words, reassured by them and finding them fitting. “To forget them, would be to forget those that lost their lives, and those that gave them.” He murmured gently; nothing could be less proper than to forget those that gave their lives trying to save others, and of course, they should always remember those that were lost in the tragic event. No, it should not be forgotten, but nor should anyone carry around the weight of the disaster as if they had been the very one that had pushed the mountain down upon them.

A quiet breath was drawn in at the admittance that was given life, and R’nya paused for several moments, wondering how it was that he should respond to that. The immediate response was that at least Ameris still had her son; Peorrya had not been so lucky. But that was unbecoming and Ameris could no more help that her fellow goldrider had lost her child, then she could help that she had lost the father of hers. He would not dump that guilt upon the already tortured girl.

What to say, though? R’nya was not one to apologise for things he had not done nor caused, and he did not feel Ameris was the type to take such apologies. Just as he had told her that she could not carry the weight of the world, neither was R’nya inclined to do so. He was, however, sorry for her loss though he did not feel like attempting to phrase that for her. “Does he know?” R’nya didn’t think the boy knew who his father was – certainly he didn’t, though that may have been more of a move on Ameris’ part to spare the other rider the glowers R’nya was known to give those he didn’t approve of.

Not one to usually volunteer information, Ameris was slightly startled that she had divulged something to R'nya that she hadn't expected to say. It hadn't bothered her more than any of the other deaths when she found out R'lan had died, his Hoth with him, but Rislan was without a father now. The boy was young, granted, but he would be old enough to impress a dragon before she knew it and he needed someone to look up to. Someone who wasn't her drunken father. Faranth forbid that Rislan turned out like A'mad in anyway! She would make sure that never came to pass.

"Rislan?" she said, "Of course not, he wouldn't understand that his father was dead. He never knew R'lan was his father. He's much too young to even be bothered by it now and hopefully when he is old enough to be bothered by it he'll be impressed and too busy to think on it." Her smile was rueful at the admittance that she had grand hopes for her lad and at the mouthful of words she had spouted out. She wasn't ashamed to admit that she envisioned her strong willed son on the sturdiest and smartest bronze to be clutched and it was her secret wish that her son would impress a son of Mizeath's. Well.. Admit it to herself anyway. "I suppose it's more for my benefit that I'm upset than for Rislan's," she admitted and found it was true. Her upset at the bronzerider's death had been purely selfish. She was at a loss how to breach the subject with her son and for all her sure words, she knew there would come a point that Rislan would ask and she had no idea how to explain it.

Her mind was settling into a more acceptable pace and Mizeath rumbled with contentment beside Xyreith. Mizeath highly disliked the volatile mood that her rider had been subject to for the past few days and much preferred the quiet acceptance that Ameris generally - though not always - displayed. The young gold was loathe to admit that she was ill equipped to deal with the level of emotion that Ameris had been displaying lately and she had despaired of ever making her rider better. She was comforted in the fact that calling to Xyreith had been the best decision, innately aware that R'nya could accomplish what she, herself, couldn't. Mizeath's big body shifted closer to the bronze as she began to relax.

R’nya nodded slightly, opting not to make a comment on the rider’s name, and the information it brought with it, though his lips did purse just slightly for a moment. “Worry about that when you get to it, Ameris. By the time it is of importance to him – if, indeed, such a time arrives – it will not be for you.” It was clear the girl had no particular ties to the deceased bronzerider, but R’nya watched her face carefully as he spoke. If Rislan decided he needed to know who his father was, it would not occur for some time yet; the child was happy, perfectly loved, and not yet old enough to have friends with which to compare family members – or lack thereof.

By the time he asks, he will probably be more enthralled by the idea of the man being a hero than that he’s dead. R’nya cast an eyebrow raised look at his dragon, expression sceptical, but did not make any comment, vocal or otherwise. R’lan, a hero, was the last thing the bronzerider could envision and he was more inclined to imagine the man was squished in his bed. His dragon was vicious and cruel, and R’nya had little reason to believe otherwise of the man. He wondered idly if Indivara would find any positive emotions in the man’s death; it was his dragon that mauled her, was it not? Xyreith grunted in response, uncaring and unconcerned.

Xyreith’s attention shifted to Mizeath as the weyrling shifted closer, his expression unreadable as he watched her without comment. The large bronze was still trying to figure out where Mizeath fit into life in general, and he was slowly getting a feel for her buttons. Xyreith enjoyed pressing buttons – it was why he so regularly went out of his way to be childish with Aradissicath, though he would not be at all above admitting he favoured her of the golds he and R’nya kept company. However, he had yet to pick which ones he could press on Mizeath in order to get a response, but preferably without stirring up their human counter parts.

He’d figure it out, eventually, he was quite sure. In the meantime, with the disaster still lingering over everyone’s heads and the humans all so stressed while the occasional dragon still found need to vanish between forever… Well, for now Xyreith would leave Mizeath’s buttons alone. But not for much longer, the decided, feeling smug as he lowered himself to lay beside her, extending the wing closest to her just enough to give her a light nudge, before settling it back against his side. Slowly swirling eyes watched the two humans, though he was very much aware of Mizeath.

“Where is the little fellow?” R’nya had never outright stated it, of course, but he enjoyed the time he was with Peorray or Ameris and their son was present; the loss of Soren was a sore spot for R’nya, though the wound was not nearly as festering as that which Peorray was home to. Nonetheless, pale eyes were clearly eager as he turned his slightly-arched-eyebrows at Ameris and waited for an answer. He really hoped the child wasn’t with that drunken fool the girl called a father!
