2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Thistle!

Seeking an escape from the Weyr, you take a hike up the Mountain. Unfortunately, on your way back down you slip and take a tumble. You're fine, but you've found you have ended up in what appears to be a pit of some type. It is taller than you, wide enough that you cannot reach both walls, and you can see no way out.

The weather is holding fine, but night is on the way in. What do you do?

Bordtai had found the noise around the Weyr deafening and with his chores done and fresh bruises still on his torso from running into the larger weyrbrats yesterday, he had no intention of repeating the mistake again.  So after pocketing a meatroll, the nine-turn old boy retied one of his boot laces and decided to go for a walk.  It was to get out of the Weyr, but he’d never dream of escaping like he heard the northern folk talk of.  Bordtai had no delusions of what he wasn’t capable of, and living out in the jungle or making it across the sea was defiantly NOT within his abilities.

After all, where would he go?  Bred and born in the Weyr, he had no other home.  But that didn’t mean he couldn’t take a walk away from it and it’s harsh realities now and again.  Fresh air was a relief and Bordtai knew just the spot a small hike up the nearby mountain that would open onto a ledge and give him a great view and a comfortable seat.  With the day’s weather fair, what could go wrong?  Nobody ever missed the scrawny boy anyways, they’d not notice him gone till curfew at the crèche.

And they didn’t.  The afternoon passed by blissfully quiet as Bordtai sat upon his ledge watching the birds of the south flying over the tree tops below.  He had enjoyed his meatroll and even napped at some point while laying in the sun.  With it slowly drifting toward the horizon though, his stomach had finally growled, waking him, and he knew it was time to head back.  A pity really.  The world was much nicer when nobody else was in it.

Coming back down his normal trail, Bordtai paused at something shinning in the sunlight just a short way off the trail.  Curious as only a Weyrbrat could be, he decided he needed to check it out before finishing his walk home.  A few rocks scaled and a small gap jumped and Bordtai found himself looking at a pretty blue stone.  It was rough around the edges and dirty with another color rock stuck to it, but the boy had seen some crafters be able to smooth out the rocks.  If he took it to such a person, would they make him give it to an adult or would they show him how to make it smooth and pretty?

Deciding that even if it wasn’t smooth it was still pretty, he pocketed it and turned to make the small jump back.  His foot, unfortunately, caught on loose gravel and Bordtai’s stomach lurched as the world spun on him and for a dizzy moment the boy couldn’t tell which way was up.  In enough falls and fights in his life, he knew well enough to tuck his head and cover his neck.  Curling into a ball, he rolled a short way before another stomach-twisting drop and a hard landing.  When the world came to a blissful stop, he uncurled himself to find stone walls on all four sides of him.

The area was wide enough that he couldn’t reach the opposite sides when he stretched his arms.  The bottom of the pit was blissfully sand and only a small cut on one arm was the only damage the short tumble had done for him.  Looking up, however, and his greatfullness that he was unhurt was quickly forgotten.  He couldn’t reach the top.  It wouldn’t matter how much he stretched or jumped, the top lip was well out of the reach of a grown man, let alone the small boy.

Then I’ll climb out.  he thought to himself with determination that he didn’t feel.  Looking at each side carefully, he finally chose the one that might have the best hand holds and pulled himself up.  He had gotten about a foot before the stones supporting his weight broke loose and he fell again.  Twice more he tried and twice more he fell before he finally sat down with his back to one wall.

Pulling his knees up to his chest, he felt his eyes start to burn.  “Great idea, Bordtai.  You said yourself nobody would notice you gone till bedtime.  It’ll be dark then.  Who’ll find you in a hole in the dark?  Maybe you really are a dimglow…”  Sniffling, he wiped his nose on his sleeve and tried to  hold back the tears.

Grith had been painted today and was yet to be washed. Since it was afternoon and starting to warm up after the muggy winter she was enjoying the warmth in a solo flight. Today she was splattered and thickly coated in pinks, purples and blues. She could have passed for an outlandish Blue if it wasn't for her tiny and easily identifiable size! As the time passed the heat sapped slowly out of the air.

'Are you going to come down for a wash? The weyrbrats are pestering me.' Par'a sent to Grith, peeking through her eyes to see where the Green was. She was sweeping in circles near the mountains.

I don't want to stop flying! Grith protested. Par'a withdrew with a mental shrug, telling the weyrbrats that no, they couldn't wash Grith but they could do so in the morning. And re-paint her. They were overjoyed with this proposal, which in turn pleased Par'a and sent warm fuzzy emotions buzzing between woman and dragon.

She continued to circle about for a while, putting in spins and spirals to liven things up. Eventually she ended up skimming low across the mountain's surface, brushing quite close to where the Weyr's buildings were nestled into the rocks. Her eyes whisked across the ground, it never changed but she always forgot so it was like scoping an entirely new place each time. This time, something actually was different. A hole that she had seen several times now had an occupant; a young weyrbrat.

Confused she spun on her wingtip and looked down, making sure she wasn't seeing things. Confirming that there definitely was a young boy sitting in the hole she angled herself down to land several feet away from it. Walking over she craned her head in over the edge of the hole.

Why are you sitting in there? She asked Bordtai curiously. There was a very small flicker of recognition in her mind as she studied the boy. It wasn't that he was one of the weyrbrats that always painted her and she was on close terms with like Indivara or Kerrin, but that he never participated in the communal weyrbrat activity of painting her. She shook her body vigorously before settling down at the edge of the hole.

I don't think that looks fun. She commented. Was this some new fad or game the weyrbrats were playing now? For a severely forgetful dragon, Grith was rather up to date with the weyrbrats... If only because they were happy to tell her everything all over again every single day.

When a brief shadow darkened his hole, Bordtai had looked up and immediantly recognized the flamboyant little green dragon who was constantly inviting Weyrbrats to paint her any gaudy number of colors besides her own pretty green.  He never did understand the idea - she was so pretty to begin with besides how loud she always sounded in his head.  He never stayed close long because of it, but he still knew her.

And he had never been so glad to see her.  Any other dragon he might have hesitated speaking back, but she loved Weyrbrats and that comforted him some small amount.

"It's no fun at'all."  He replied back loudly to make sure his voice would reach her instead of mumbling like he was prone to.  "I fell in and I can't get out."  He winced as his voice echoed off the stone in it's natural tunnel making his voice louder in his own ears.

"Please, can you help me out or find someone who can?  I'll be in trouble if I am late for cur'few."  I'm already going to be in trouble if the creche folk find out I was outside the Weyr alone...  he added as an after thought, not aware the dragon would hear it too.  Standing up he gave the dragon his best pleading look.

Grith let out a little huff as she listened to Bordtai. So it wasn’t a new fad, he had fallen. You didn’t see the hole? It looks rather big... She craned her neck down as she inspected the hole a little closer. Her eyes swirled brightly in the shadow . It was quite a big hole, but most notably it was quite deep and the walls relatively smooth.

Standing up she stared back at the weyrbrat, how had he not seen the hole? It was too deep for even one of the tallest men to be able to escape and plenty wide enough to spot. After all, she had spotted it when she was flying up overhead.

Help you? She asked incredulously. Nobody ever asked her to help! It was always stop that, go away, you’re making a mess! She bounced on the edge of the hole excitedly, sending dirt and little rocks down into it. I can help! She shrieked.

So wrapped up in her little world of glee that she had been asked to help someone, and that it wasn’t a joke, Grith’s atrocious memory kicked in. That is... she wasn’t helping Bordtai or even thinking of how to help him. Instead she was prancing and leaping across the ground, her eyes brightest pink and swirling at an untrackable pace. She wasn’t speaking, but instead mentally humming some up-beat tune at quite a high pitched volume. Perhaps Bordtai wouldn’t be so glad it was Grith that had stumbled across him anymore.

Bordtai found himself having to cover his face as he was showered by dirt and pebbles.  It didn't take a rider to know the strange little green was overtaken in excitement about being helpful.  Shen she bounced out of his sight, however, he got worried.  Now what was she doing?  Was she going to get help?

"HEEEY!"  He shouted.  He didn't really want her to leave and forget that he was there!  "Come back!  You forgot me!"  Shard it all!  Would she come back?  Could she even hear him now?  He was pretty confident he could still hear her prancing around up there - a creature as large as a dragon couldn't bounce lightly afterall.

"Maybe you can reach down and grab me!  Pull me up?!  Please come back!"

Bordtai's initial shouts went unheard by Grith, though eventually she did hear his call for her to come back. Scurrying back over to the edge she sent another shower of dirt onto the poor child, her eyes whirling curiously as she peered in.

Why are you down there? She asked. When he repeated that he was stuck and needed help things seemed to click back together in her mind. Help! I can do that! She bounced a little on the edge of the hole, though not quite as exhuberantly as before.

Pell! How can I help him? She sent to her rider, showing an image of Bordtai trapped deep in the hole. What is he doing in there? Was Par'a's first reaction, to which Grith gave a rather loud snort and impatiently chided her for. He needs help not questions!

They continued to talk for a few moments, eventually settling on Par'a telling Grith to reach down and pick him up. This idea was potentially great, especially so considering how small Grith was. Normally this would have led to a nice calm rescue with no collapsing ground...

Excited, Grith thrust her head down into the hole. She could just reach Bordtai with her snout, so that if he were to raise his hands he could hold onto her head. The sharp movement didn't sit well with the earth beneath her however, which gave a slight groaning sound before a huge chunk of it broke and slid into the hole. With most of her weight on it, Grith was taken with a shriek into the hole despite her rapid attempts to scramble out backwards. Shocked, she flailed in the confined space as much as she could, completely forgetting that there was a young boy there with her.

Bordtai had just gotten over his own debate if it was smart to cling to the maw of a dragon that could easily take off a limb, if not half his body, should she suddenly decide to be hungry.  Growing up in the Weyr, however, it wasn’t truly a fear that the boy had and he had decided it well worth the risk.  Reaching up, he had barely brushed her smooth hide when she began to back-peddle, showering him with rocks and dirt again.  Lifting his arms to cover his face, he found the dragon sliding toward him as she flailed her way right into the hole with him.

Of course, what had been a good sized hole – large enough to keep him from using both sides to climb out of – was suddenly much smaller with a dragon flailing wildly in it.  “Hey!  HEY!”  he shouted as he ducked under a twisting neck.  He was going to shout at her to calm down when an elbow caught him in the stomach and squished him against a stone wall.  When it moved again to flail in another direction, he barely managed to catch his breath and duck underneath a wing.

This was NOT safe.  In fact, as far as he could tell, there was nowhere safe in the hole while the dragon was in a panic.  Except maybe on top of the dragon herself.  As the elbow threatened to knock the breath out of him a second time, Bordtai took the chance and jumped, clinging to the front arm of the dragon as he tried (and failed) at attempting to scramble higher on the creature.  At least he succeeded in not being hurled into the rock wall a second time.
