"Once again from the top if you would Cissily, this time, release the note delicately, not like you're strangling an ovine. Baritones, please remember you're the thunder of the tempest, reach for the low notes. And one, and two and three..." She raised her hand as the baritones let out a cohesive thrumming rumble and the soprano wrecked it. Merry shook her head, silencing the sixteen-year-old.
"Once more, baritones. This is how it should sound, rounded, clear, delicate notes on soprano!" The gentlemen provided the rumble perfectly and Merry popped out the delicate ringing notes as they were written to give the young soprano a guide. "You're morning rain, gentle mist, floating atop the thunder. Is that clearer?"
Cissily nodded and then sighed. Ling Ling, Merry's green firelizard chirped on key and the girl's frown turned to something of a smile. She hadn't meant to crush the young woman but she knew, in the end, the girl would come through.
"I'll keep practising. I don't know why nothing will come out right today."
"You're forcing it, that's why. Take a break, do something else, get some klah into you and then try again. Ladies and gentlemen, we'll pick this up tomorrow bright and early. Practise, please. Baritones, excellent work. See you tomorrow."
She was the one who needed klah and her cup was empty. Merry needed some food too, so heading down the corridor toward the Dining Hall at a sedate pace. Ling Ling caught up with her and curled around her neck like a necklace and chirped again brightly to anyone they passed. She was a friendly thing, always looking out to meet someone knew. Merry herself was reserved but much more kindly when it came to meeting new people these days.
She even decided to sit with someone else for morning meal. Or rather, she gestured to the seat and smiled.
"May I join you?" she asked quietly. Ling chirped her own greeting.

It had been the most interesting couple of months at Telgar, not the least of which was learning that the man who had showed him around the first day was the Weyrleader and Larnell was still somewhat embarrassed by bothering the man. Not that the Weyrleader had seemed to be bothered over all, but well, the Weyrleader! Larnell shook his head to himself and lifted his cup to have a sip of klah, sighing softly as he set his cup back down and poked at his morning meal; assorted fruits in yoghurt. Since the fruits were out of season, he assumed they came from the South, which was fairly neat.
Picking up a spoonful, Larnell chewed thoughtfully as he tried to decide what he was going to do for the day. His most recent goal was to get himself a firelizard, since hearing that Candidates were allowed to get one. They sounded absolutely precious and he was so there for that. Plus from what he understood, they could be quite useful and while his father had no desire to acknowledge his continued existence, it would be excellent to have an easy way to communicate with his mother, siblings and extended family that didn’t have enormous sticks up their rears.
“Hrm?” Larnell asked, blinking when someone spoke to him and looked up, spoon of yoghurt and fruit pieces halfway to his mouth. A pretty woman greeted his gaze, and he gave her a lopsided smile. “Sure!” Having agreed, he finished the journey of the spoon to his mouth, and chewed slowly as he watched the pretty lady with her firelizard. “I’m Larnell,” he said easily, knowing he hadn’t met this young lady yet and that giving his name was polite. “May I know your name?”

"Meryem, I'm the Harper here at Telgar," she said, sitting down and getting comfortable with her klah and meal. "This is Ling Ling. Ling for short."
Lind Ling gave a cheery chirp and unwound herself from Merry's neck to inspect Larnell, chirping with delight as she did so. She swiveled her head this way and that and then rubbed up against his hand. That was Ling Ling, loving everyone these days. She was soft and had no scaley patches at all and Meryem prided herself on the fact that she'd done well on the firelizard's upkeep.
Every day it was something new with this one. New fascinations, sometimes new treasures, finding new friends was usually pretty big. So she let Ling do what she pleased so long as it was nice. Lind had never done much to harm anything unless it was bugs or vermin, those were tasty morsels.
"It's nice to meet you, Larnell. I haven't see your face around so, you must be new. A Candidate?"
