Malvayth was flying again, chirping and trilling in delight as she twisted and turned in the sky over Fort. She had been flying almost nonstop every waking moment once the dawn after the Hatching had come. With her babies safely out of their shells and with their mates she no longer was worried, her punishment was over, she was free to soar and play and celebrate.

The first day she had worn herself out and slept so very soundly back in her weyr that Cazan had been worried that the gold might have overexerted herself. But no, the next morning she was back at it again, alternating time in the air with playful prancing jogs around the bowl. The pure unbridled joy had done a lot to ease Cazan's own mood and worries and after doing a little bit more packing she had kidnapped T'ryn for an afternoon snuggle, dragging him away from labeling and organizing various parcels so that she could pull him onto the bed and nuzzle her face against him fondly.

"Have I mentioned that I'm so glad that's over with? And how much I love you? Because both of those things are so very true." Cazan gave her mate a firm squeeze, or at least as firm of one as she could given that her belly was in the way. T'ryn really had done so much to help her stay sane and not just fall into the same angry and paranoid despair that her dragon had fallen into after the first Touching.

She pushed herself up to give her mate a kiss. "We're going to be camping on our way to Telgar right? Mal is excited about this little adventure. Will there be a lot of people around or can I snuggle you under the stars in private?"

“Maybe once or twice,” T’ryn laughed and was so relieved to see Cazan relaxed again. The days leading up to the Touching had been stressful and then the death of one of the dragonets devastated all of them, and then the lead up to the Hatching… he was fairly certain that he was just as happy it was all over with. He wanted to sleep for a week but there was still so much to do for the move. But Cazan had convinced him it could all wait while they had an afternoon cuddle and he easily relented.

He leaned into the kiss that tempted him to go for a little more than simple cuddling but T’ryn enjoyed these moments alone with his mate as much as he enjoyed the ones that had a lot less clothing and more moaning. So what if he was a sucker for conversation and loved learning more about Cazan and laughing together? “Right. I think it’ll have us camping for two nights but K’dar and I will go over everything again after we see how your little zooming gold is doing this week.” Malvayth was back to her old self again, carefree and constantly on the move. It was nice seeing her in the sky again and T’ryn had surprised her a few times by sitting on the ledge to watch her.

“Maybe Malvayth can work on her sneaky thief routine and help us be sneaky and alone under the stars. K’dar and one other bronzerider I’m letting him decide on will be with us. Actually, Sy will likely have to cover us because Tiberuth will flirt with Mal and the other bronze might be a distraction as well.” T’ryn grinned at the idea of Malvayth being surrounded by bronze dragons and the antics she could get up to with at least two of them. Syrendryth would be happy to sit away from anything the others came up with.

He slid a hand to rest on Cazan’s growing belly. It was still hard to believe they would be parents come the summer and T’ryn didn’t know yet if he was in awe or weirded out somewhat when he put too much thought into the whole process of pregnancy. “Are you sure you want to do this trip? We can wait until after the baby is born. I want us settled in together but I can wait as long as you need.” He was starting to realise that it might not just be Malvayth’s wings that called a halt to their travel but Cazan’s own exhaustion. He’d have to alert K’dar to plan out three night stops so they could go over both options and take in how many breaks each day might be needed.

"I'm sure she would love the chance to be sneaky, though she'll also probably want to talk with her escorts. I've been trying to get her sold on the idea that bronze dragons will give her better prizes. It's hard to argue with that since Syrendryth keeps bringing you to me." Cazan smiled, thinking about how soon it would be that the bronze wouldn't have to keep ferrying his rider for visits. She'd just be right next door, or in the same weyr depending on how the Weyrleader had handled the door situation. "I should make something for Mulrissa and S'far to thank them for being so accommodating. And something for K'dar and the other escort... maybe bags to hang on their dragons' straps."

Plans and patterns were already filling her thoughts, if she got started right away she might have something ready for them. Except as she lifted her head to look towards her little workspace she saw that it was already halfway packed, likely on purpose to keep her from trying to do things like this and delay their trip further. Cazan just couldn't remember if that was her idea, T'ryn's, or perhaps even a suggestion from Kor'is. She'd been forgetting a lot of things lately, something that the Weyrwoman had assured her was completely normal. That didn't make her hate it any less though.

With a somewhat dramatic sigh she settled back against T'ryn. "Or I can make them something after we get to Telgar." At least that wouldn't be too far away, and she could draw up some plans to pass the time between bouts of packing. Cazan grinned at her mate when he asked if she wanted to wait even longer for the move. "I'd leave today if I could, but it's probably better to let Mal get this out of her system first," she said with a lazy twirl of her hand to indicate the gold's gleeful zooming about. "That and she also wanted to check on her prizes before she left. I don't think she's really grasped the whole motherhood thing. She knows they're her and Yanth's babies, and she's curious about them, but now that they're out of their eggs she's not entirely sure what to do. She knows someone should tell them stories so I think she's going to ask Yanth and Aradissicath to do that for her."

T’ryn had been giving Cazan the look when she started thinking about making everyone gifts and got that far off gaze in her eyes as she thought about patterns and plans. He knew how silly it was to do that when he was just as guilty for getting lost in thought about his own interests but he wanted Cazan to rest sometimes. When she settled back down against him, he didn’t know if he had helped contribute to that decision or if his mate had just given up for the time being thanks to the pregnancy and exhaustion.

“Or you can make them something after we get to Telgar,” he echoed in agreement and kissed his mate’s forehead. “With the escorts, you can quiz them on our breaks about what they might like,” he added before a mood swing had her crying or angry because she believed he was mocking her. There had been some close calls over the last several weeks and T’ryn was learning to choose his words carefully even when making a cup of tea was involved.

“Malvayth is a clever girl, she’ll figure it all out and find the best solution for her babies,” T’ryn tried not to talk ill of the gold dragon no matter where she was or what she was doing thanks to her tantrums early on. But also because he did find her clever and he liked her unique way of seeing things—even if they got her in trouble and caused Cazan and him headaches. “From what I can tell, dragon motherhood is a lot different to a human’s version. I think she will come to understand the distance between her and the dragonets is normal and she doesn’t need to do anything else for them now. But when she watches you with our little one, it might take some explaining.” Malvayth still believed Cazan carried a clutch of eggs, which was adorable, but they would have to do a lot of explaining for the birth and then the care of the child.

“Do you think we should make a little egg costume for the baby?” T’ryn grinned as the idea came to him. The image was precious and he could easily imagine Malvayth loving it.

There was the tiniest urge to smack T'ryn for not being helpful in letting her get back to work, and that impulse upset Cazan who felt her mate deserved so much better than a crazy woman who would try to hit him, even lightly, for helping. That was about to keep cascading into ever worse emotions until she was crying, but thankfully her wonderful man distracted her with some helpful thoughts about getting to know her escorts during the trip so she could make them something better and she certainly didn't deserve him and she sniffled, shoving her face against her as she hiccupped and coughed out another short sob that she quickly tried to stifle. "I love you and I don't deserve you at all and if you leave me for being crazy I'll understand but it will make this whole move very awkward."

Are you being sad for a reason or just for fun again? It's not for fun! So why are you sad? Did your mate upset you? No... I just... he's too good for me and I don't deserve him and I don't have a good reason to be sad it's just happening. Just for fun then, Malvayth repeated. I will keep flying then. I'm practicing my rolls and spins!

It was the most ludicrous thing Cazan could imagine and the hiccup turned into a soft giggle. "I'm sorry. Mal is ridiculous... she asked if I was sad for fun... and then declared I was and I'm not. I'm still sorry I'm crazy, and I'm still so glad that I have you and this is all probably your fault for putting this baby in me and of course we can dress it up as an egg. That way Mal can watch it hatch when we have to undress it. Part of me hopes it's a boy so he never has to go through this."

“I love you,” T’ryn whispered as he held Cazan close during her sobs and rambling about being crazy and him leaving her. He almost pointed out he hardly noticed a difference in pre-pregnancy and current Cazan but that was one of those comments that he filtered and threw out before giving voice. Some gentle teasing he could still get away with but he knew that one would upset Cazan and she’d think he always thought she was crazy and he didn’t want to work her out of that spiral.

When the giggle came, maybe he did have a moment of thinking her crazy before the explanation came. Ah, Malvayth’s logic struck again and T’ryn chuckled with her. “I love her innocent outlook on everything. It’s all very black or white with her, isn’t it? And I’ll still gladly take the blame for all of this since it means I get to spoil you more than usual.” He’d been making sure she ate since they first met and nothing had changed since that moment. Only now he surprised his mate with mugs of tea or found the food she mentioned a craving for. He even felt he was getting rather good at shoulder and feet massages.

“Am I allowed to admit that the thought of our baby in the egg costume with a little hat is absolutely precious and I’m going to find someone to do it?” He also wondered how Kor’is or B’jin were at drawing babies. He’d love to have a picture of their kid in the egg costume sitting with Malvayth—and Syrendryth if the old grump would go for it. The dragon version of their little family. I would sit for that. It’s something that would be special to you and your mate.

Thinking about their baby in a silly outfit was a good distraction, Cazan had to admit, and she smiled, thinking about her mate cooing and fussing and ultimately probably spoiling their child. She was still too nervous and worried to come up with those same silly ideas on her own yet, and it made her appreciate T'ryn even more, made her feel a bit better about all of the madness that had entered her life over the last Turn. It had all ultimately led to this moment where they were both comfortably and happily cuddling together.

"You're filling me with so many silly sappy thoughts. I can't think of anyone I'd rather have in my life than you." And me! "And Malvayth," she added in agreement. "Hopefully we can get all of this over and done with soon and then have the baby and hopefully he isn't too fussy. Or she. I am pretty sure you're going to be a better parent than I will be."

Cazan was already dreading what would happen to her work once the baby was born. Would she never get anything done at all and resent the child for it? It was something she'd already cried about and already been soothed about so she didn't want to repeat the thought again. Instead she tried to focus on something she was much more sure would have a happy outcome. "How soon do you think we can leave? The weekend? Beginning of next week? I know we wanted to make sure Mal was going to be strong enough to fly after being grounded for so long, but she seems to be doing well trying to burn through the energy she has."

I know we wanted to make sure Mal was going to be strong enough to fly after being grounded for so long, but she seems to be doing well trying to burn through the energy she has."

T’ryn laughed when it was assumed he would be the better parent. “I’m sorry but have you met me? I’m going to panic and overthink everything I do and everything he—or she—seems to want. But I’ll try my best.” He didn’t plan to know what sleep meant for at least the next year. No matter how many wonderful people they had in their life to help and guide them, T’ryn was already constantly worrying about what he will mess up and that Cazan would hate him because he forgot to do something or held the baby the wrong way.

They’d had many conversations already about their fears and T’ryn was thankful that Cazan changed the topic herself this time. He didn’t mind it and he would reassure his mate every single time if needed but this was a calm and cozy cuddle time before they returned to the next stressful situation. “I think by week’s end should be fine. Mal seems to be doing well but a few more days won’t hurt. It will also give you a bit more time to say your farewells as well.” T’ryn knew Cazan had made friends in Fort during her year there and he had some guilt for being the reason she was getting uprooted yet again. As much as they both wanted this move, he wouldn’t rush it either.

“Would you like to have a few friends over for a dinner in a day or two?” It wasn’t like she would never see the friends again but the distance would still be felt even with dragon transportation.

It was a lot of that panic and worry and overthinking that T'ryn was prone to that made her sure he was going to be a good parent. She didn't bother to mention it though, she was sure she'd mentioned it before and would probably say something similar again. After all, they were probably going to be parents together for many years. That was plenty of time to be terrified and provide reassurance to each other. Though hopefully they'd get plenty of good moments to balance it all out. It was so much easier to hope for good moments with T'ryn around.

The thought of farewells made her frown as she considered what she would do. She did have Lady and Sir, and though Sir was not quite reliable when it came to delivering notes (or at least delivering them in a pleasant manner), Lady was getting rather good at it. And once the baby was born and she and Mal took their between classes she'd be able to visit often enough. Still, it was a bit jarring to think she was getting ready to just... leave.

Cazan's frown deepened and she shook her head. "No... I don't think dinner. Maybe after we're settled we can celebrate the move with a party and bring everyone in. I'd rather focus on something positive and I don't want crying to be the last thing I do with friends in a place." N'lis and Aederyn wouldn't be able to attend that, but she was sure they'd understand and she'd keep writing to them for Mal. "Let's just do the opposite of what Mal would normally do and just sneak out quietly before anything happens to change people's minds or otherwise delay the trip."

“The opposite of Mal it is,” T’ryn agreed with a grin, loving that statement. It could describe quite a number of things but doing something quietly was definitely at the top of the list. “As we say this, I can’t help but feel like she’s going to loudly say farewell when we’re departing. We could try to tell her it’s a quiet game, I suppose.” Although T’ryn suspected a gold with a bronze escort flying across the land would attract a few onlookers no matter what. As soon as the other two arrived, no doubt some gawkers would come out to see them off—possibly with mixed reviews. T’ryn wasn’t sure if that kitchen worker had ever recovered or forgiven Malvayth for that scare she received. He secretly found it kind of funny but made sure the spirited gold dragon didn’t learn that and think she could get away with it if she tried again.

Content and suddenly feeling a bit sappy, T’ryn shifted so he could hover over Cazan and smile down at her. “I love you, Cazan. I’m so lucky to have you as my mate.” He leaned down to kiss her, lingering to savour the moment. “And thank you for having me as your mate and for moving to Telgar for Syrendryth to stay with Bedith. It means a lot to me—to us. He does like you, he’s just not vocal about it.” The fact that T’ryn didn’t often hear comments about Cazan made him believe his dragon adored the goldrider. Syrendryth always had a snarky or belittling comment for everyone since they were always judged to be beneath them but it was rare to hear such things about Cazan and T’ryn appreciated it. I’m not entirely a villain, I’ll have you know.

“I’m now being chided for my thoughts turning him into a villain but I think Malvayth might agree and I hope she ropes him into her plays someday.” You horrible man! Don’t you dare wish that fate upon me. T’ryn grinned wickedly at his mate, “I don’t think I need to pass along his reply to that!”

"Probably. I'll try and see if I can get her to practice being sneaky on our way out, though I'm sure people will notice her absence as soon as we're gone." Cazan smiled, thinking about how flamboyant and chatty her dragon was, eagerly making her own friends, and accidentally making enemies she wasn't aware of. Though annoyed kitchen workers and people who found her too obnoxious probably didn't really count as enemies.

The kiss and the almost too sweet words left her smiling, arms moving to wrap loosely around T'ryn as she let out a happy sigh. "I'm not really that sure if you're the lucky one, you make me feel lucky. After all you are quite the catch, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to be with you, and yet you keep coming back to me and want to be mine just as much as I'm yours. And I'm glad that Syrendryth likes me, I'm rather fond of him too."

It was a bit of a shame, she mused, that the bronze was already quite attached to his dragon wife, but even if he wasn't she wasn't sure he would have been interested in Malvayth. Especially since he mostly just tolerated her enthusiasm and suffered through visits with her as patiently as he could from what Cazan saw. The fact that he was willing to put up with Mal at all was honestly rather nice and she laughed as soon as T'ryn mentioned her roping Syrendryth into one of her plays as a villain. "Oh, he puts up with her enough as it is. We don't need Mal getting ideas."

Cazan pulled him back down into another kiss, lingering in how right it felt that soon she and her mate would be home together instead of having him just visiting. "I can't wait to be home with you."
