There was a thick blanket of snow on the ground, but even if he hadn't put up a little wooden picket fence around the small garden S'far knew exactly where to look even from his new ledge. He sipped his klah as he narrowed his eyes, daring the pesky candidate who happened to be walking near it to get any closer so that he could shout.

You only yell when they stray from the path so how, pray tell, are you going to know when to yell at this one? "Oh I'll know," he said, eyes narrowing further. The candidate veered away from the little plot at the last minute though as he noticed the pickets. Damn. Tragic. Whatever will you do now?

That was a good question. He'd already checked on the garden the last time the snow melted enough for him to make sure there was still enough mulch to protect the existing plants from the cold. S'far supposed he could always shovel the path, make it a bit more obvious where people should tread so that he could scold those who defied his neatly laid out borders. He grabbed a broom and snow shovel and made his way down.

It was good and soothing work, helped to give S'far something to focus on and more importantly helped him wake up a bit more. He didn't bother paying attention to the various people that passed him by, only giving them basic greetings and acknowledgements and quickly declining offers of assistance. This was more than easy enough for him to handle on his own after all.

Soon the little stone paved path that ran through the middle of his patch was clear and he'd used the broom to brush the snow off of the fence. He grinned proudly, hands on his hips as he studied his handiwork. "There we go. A nice and proper defence! Snow way people will trample the plants or grass now!"

The Hatching had been rather smooth, but the weather had been horrible. He had ended up with A’tay and Zelana spending the night in Cazan’s weyr because he refused to let them try to leave, especially after what had happened to B’kit when he arrived. They had all been devastated by the news, Mylorah worst of all, but none of them had been allowed in to see him. Mylorah had stayed that night with Kor’is and she was still there, hoping to see the bluerider soon enough. T’ryn wanted to see B’kit as well but Syrendryth needed to see his mate and with the delay in getting in to check on their friend, he had headed back to Telgar a few hours earlier.

Syrendryth was happily visiting with Bedith and T’ryn was currently watching the new Weyrleader tend to his garden. He’d seen the man from his ledge and figured now was a good time to ask him more questions about getting Cazan to the Weyr but he ended up just quietly watching S’far for several minutes, not wanting to interrupt his work that he seemed absorbed in.

He barely contained the groan from the puns but he did smile at them. T’ryn could appreciate them in that they sometimes took a clever mind to come up with them. “Ah, sir, wouldn’t that be a proper fencing? A proper defence would require removing the fence.” Maybe that hadn’t been a pun but T’ryn couldn’t let it slide as he debated with himself if it was one and if it made sense. He supposed it could count as removing the snow… no, he wasn’t going to overthink the damn pun that might not even be a pun.

"Sometimes with a proper fence defense you don't have to defence your posts. You can picket and choose your puns, T'ryn, but that doesn't mean you're any good at them. One day though! You should practice, since I hear you're expecting to be a father." S'far brushed the snow off his gloves and turned to give the young bronzerider a wink and a smile. That was truly horrific. I am only glad that I am not there to have to apologize for you.

With a mental dismissive wave at Urudith, S'far tilted his head as he sized the young man up. "What can I do for you? I'm just about done here, so we can move back inside if you want. It's snow problem to me." He picked up his tools, tucking them easily under an arm. He imagined this had something to do with either some sort of goal, or the goldrider that was supposed to be transferring to his Weyr soon. Mulrissa had already told him that she approved of the transfer and that was the most important part as far as he was concerned. Besides, Telgar could use another gold.

I'm not looking forward to it. I've heard stories. S'far gave the bronze looming on his ledge a quick glance. Oh? She sounds foolish. She's young and you haven't even met her yet, give her some time before you decide anything, old man. The bronze gave him a dismissive look and went back to soaking up what sun he could.

T’ryn winced at the explanation and the deluge of puns washing over him. A part of him wanted to debate if ‘picket and choose’ was the correct way to use it or if S’far should have gone with a slightly slurred ‘picket choose’ instead but he had a feeling that would only lead to a headache. Please get that meeting over with so I don’t have to hear more of that nonsense than necessary. Why was that man allowed to lead? T’ryn didn’t acknowledge his dragon, too busy wondering why his becoming a father meant he would need to practice his puns but he was too afraid to ask.

He did, however, point out the reusing of a pun. “Isn’t there some sort of unspoken rule about reusing a pun within minutes of each other? One might think you’re losing your touch and lacking creativity, sir.” Maybe he shouldn’t bring logic into the conversation when he was looking for answers on arranging Cazan’s move. So he quickly moved along. “I don’t want to be an inconvenience so we can stay out here or head inside if you wish. I was just curious about the best way to move goldrider Cazan here and your thoughts on the situation. I know you’re still settling into your position and the Fort leadership had their own clutch on the Sands and now Malvayth’s is weeks away so it’s been busy on both ends.” Their relocation wasn’t high priority and T’ryn knew that and didn’t pester anyone about it but it had been a few weeks since he last looked into it and wondered if anyone had had a chance to go over the ideas he had come up with. He certainly didn’t have experience or truly understood all of the logistics involved but he wanted to help out as much as he could and, again, not be a burden.

"Well it certainly isn't an unspoken rule if you speak of it, and if that's the case is it even really a rule anymore? I suppose it's snow big deal though," S'far paused to chuckle before gesturing for T'ryn to follow him back inside so that he could at least put his tools away and they could be comfortable while they talked. "You're right though, there's snow excuse for me to slack off, people might winter what's wrong with me if I keep repeating the same old fluff. Weather or not I care though..."

He glanced at the younger man and laughed again, giving T'ryn a firm slap to the back. "Sorry, I suppose I can hold off for a bit. I've looked over some of the options you've given me. Fort already approved of the transfer on their end, Mulrissa is on board, so I think the best course of action is to proceed as soon as she and her dragon are ready." S'far kept talking as he made his way back towards his personal weyr, pushing open the door and ushering T'ryn inside so he could check for any notes he had on the matter at his desk.

"Cazan is pregnant, and I'm sure you are aware that makes the move more complicated. I like your idea to have her complete her between training here with the latest batch of Weyrlings. We may as well try to move her sooner rather than later. Birth can bring complications that would delay things even more, but we'll want to move before she's too big to do more than waddle and be angry." He tapped on one of his notes and turned back to T'ryn as he asked, "Malvayth is a strong flyer right? We'll need to plan for stops and a small escort, but I think flying directly here once that clutch hatches and the two of them are ready would be the best plan. How good are you at camping?"

T'ryn was frowning, doing his best not to react any more negatively to the purposely overused bad pun while also debating if that 'whether' was a pun with 'weather'. It likely was but it didn't matter when that slap to his back jarred him from his thoughts and he gave the Weyrleader an embarrassed smile but was relieved the pins would stop for a moment. It was also good to know S'far could do serious business mode when needed.

T'ryn followed inside, nodding when appropriate since S'far was recapping what was known. He quietly delighted in the praise for his idea but was soon worrying about pregnancy complications and Cazan moving into an angry phase. He would prefer to avoid both and mentally noted to ask a Healer for advice on continuing with a good pregnancy.

"Malvayth is a strong flyer so her escort would likely need to be bronzes to keep up with her." He already knew he would ask to be one of them and maybe he could get K'dar signed up for it as well. Would they need another one or two? Maybe an older pair? He would have to study a map and maybe make some scouting trips to learn more about the areas they would be passing over. But they would get to that.

"Camping? I grew up in Katila, sir. Although I will confess there are others who excel at it." He briefly considered finding rooms at a Hold and leaving the dragons in a nearby field but not everyone was friendly toward them and he didn't want to separate if it wasn't needed.

"I know both Malvayth and Cazan are excited for the move so they could be ready to head out a day or two after the Hatching." If Cazan was feeling well. The idea of complications and an angry mate wouldn't leave his mind.

S'far fished out a map and spread it out onto the table, pinning the corners down with various mugs and weights he had scattered about. "I don't like the thought of drawing too much attention; I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to try and meddle with a gold and her bronze escorts but I would rather avoid giving anyone a chance to prove me wrong."

He set a few small stones to mark various potential camping sites he'd used in the past, along with other potential locations that would need to be scouted further. Don't you dare volunteer us for this. The bronze flicked his tail in annoyance as he revealed he had been secretly listening instead of napping in the sun. Awe, old man, you wound me. I know you don't liked to camp in the cold. We'll have someone else check those places. That and you are a weyrleader now. You should act like it and stop doing things beneath us. Fine, fine.

"Get together with K'dar, this will be a good learning opportunity, he can find someone to scout these locations ahead of time or handle it himself. I want at least two bronzeriders on escort duty, an extra won't hurt though so I'll put out a call for volunteers. She's your mate, so I'll let you make the final decisions for who goes, just keep me informed."

He straightened up and cracked his neck. "So, the other thing. I hear you've been working on a door between your weyr and the one adjacent. If you want any help I'd be glad to work on it while you're in Fort. Either way, I will at least be making sure that you do an acceptable job. I don't want sloppy holes in my Weyr."

Was S'far reading his mind or maybe his dragon? Neither, though bringing out a map would normally be logical in this conversation, I'm still not convinced the Weyrleader knows what that word means. Urudith likely suggested it.. Even when he was happily with his mate, Syrendryth seemed to still have opinions on everyone.

T'ryn wanted to tune out Syrendryth but his opinion actually mattered while they looked at the map and the potential spots pointed out. They seemed logical and well spaced. Still, he would want to scout ahead for his own peace of mind whether K'dar did as well or not. He valued K'dar's input and trusted him but this was his mate and T'ryn knew he was also annoying in needing to look into things himself.

T'ryn startled out of his planning over when they could head out to scout when his door idea was mentioned. "Oh, I actually haven't started it beyond chalk outlining the space. I already felt like I was pushing my luck and abusing my friendship with Weyrwoman Mulrissa by asking so much for Cazan. My weyr already has two sleeping quarters so we can work with that." Having more space with Yfris sometimes staying or Cazan needing space for her craft would be nice but guilt was eating away at him. Would others be given the same chance? Maybe another bronze and gold pair but T'ryn still had trouble accepting he could have better things because he was a bronzerider.

S'far tilted his head as he considered whether or not joining the two personal weyrs qualified as some sort of abuse of power. "I think it's fine. Your dragons aren't mated after all, and having her own ledge would make things easier if Malvayth picks a mate. I'm looking forward to having another gold in Telgar, and cutting a hole in a wall is easy enough to keep a gold and bronze pair happy. I'll just have to make sure the job is done properly so that it can either be walled up or have a proper door installed to keep the areas separate if future residents don't want to share the space."

Or if those two separate. Don't be rude, old man. The bronze huffed on his ledge, stretching lazily. I am not wishing anything befall them or their relationship, I am merely pointing out that not all mates last. S'far shook his head and turned his attention back to the young bronzerider. "Borrow the map if you'd like to copy it, don't mark it up anymore than it currently is. I'll probably check on the door situation while you're away visiting your mate in Fort. I look forward to meeting her in person when she arrives."

He straightened up and stretched, cracking his neck rather loudly. "Anything else I could help you with? Interested in becoming one of my merry apprentice bronzerider minions?"

T’ryn frowned but nodded. He supposed it wasn’t really asking for much and Malvayth having her own ledge and wallow that she could one day share with her own mate had been a main reason for the idea to begin with. He would have been fine with just having the weyr beside his be in Cazan’s name and they just darted back and forth by going through the main hall but he technically now had Mulrissa and the old and new Weyrleaders saying it was fine. He just had to get over being awkward about being a bronzerider and having such things be approved. “I’ll start working on it this stay, sir. Not sure how much I’ll get done in two days, but I don’t mind if it’s not ready before the move.”

He rolled the map up carefully, grateful to have such a detailed map in his possession. He would most certainly be copying it for his own use—which meant the door might not get worked on nearly as much as he first thought. He didn’t want to keep the map for too long, preferring to return it before he went back to Fort. Maybe he could convince K’dar to start hacking away at the wall while he copied the map and they discussed options.

“That’s everything, sir, thank you. And no, no interest, sorry to say. I’ve never had an interest in running a Weyr. My goals focus more on becoming a wingleader. I’d even be okay with wingsecond since I don’t know if I’d be good at leading. I like coming up with formations and imagining how various pairs would work together,” T’ryn confessed, almost shy to give his dream voice to a Weyrleader—and one that would have been in a wing before the plague and the small time they had them in Katila.

"Ah, well if you change your mind and decide you want to join let me know. This can be rather weyr-y work after all and I appreciate all the help I can get. But if you're more interested in formations I suppose we can wing it, see how your ideas fly. Let's wait until after you get your mate here and everything settled in though. I'm sure she'll be expecting your company. That and I wouldn't want to get too involved in discussions only to have you pulled away because of a midwife crisis." S'far chuckled then paused a moment, scratching at his chin. "Actually how soon is she due? I wouldn't want to be premature with that pun..."

Out on his ledge, Urudith audibly groaned, the sound coming off as a disgruntled half roar as he buried his head under a wing. He was half tempted to apologize to the young bronzerider that had suffered through the punny onslaught, but the young man didn't deserve his pity that much. S'far just laughed to himself proudly for a moment before grabbing his notepad to jot down when Telgar's newest goldrider would be expecting so he could make sure the healers were prepared.

"All kidding aside, I am interested to see your thoughts on wing formations and such. Write up a few ideas and I'll read over them sometime before we have a more serious talk."

T’ryn didn’t mind the puns but when they came at him in almost every sentence, it was a bit much and he grimaced slightly once more. Although, he had to admit it was impressive that S’far could come up with so many in rapid succession like that. T’ryn was willing to bet that the Weyrleader had some puns worked out for years, specifically ones dealing with the Weyr and dragons. He wondered how many times some of them had been used and how many people had heard them but didn’t want to bring it up since the older generation didn’t always like discussing the pre-plague times.

He let S’far know when they assumed Cazan was due, basing it around Malvayth’s Flight since that was pretty much when they had started having sex—though he left that fact out. T’ryn didn’t want to know what puns or words of wisdom the Weyrleader could get out of that. He was thankful he didn’t say anything as S’far went back into serious mode and even seemed interested in his formations. M’ris had used his wings ideas back when Ista had its fires as it seemed to be the only breakdown anyone had done and it seemed to have worked out well and now another Weyrleader wanted to see what he could come up with. T’ryn was cautiously excited and motivated now to clean up his ideas.

“I will definitely do that! Thank you, sir.” So much for trying to stay cautious as he smiled brightly, his hope and excitement shining. Suddenly embarrassed by his reaction, T’ryn decided that was a good point to excuse himself. He’d gotten some answers and guidance and even a jump on his career goal. Best to leave now before anything was changed.

“Thank you for everything, sir. I’ll get started with the map and planning that out so I can return your copy as soon as possible before starting on the entranceway.” He’d have to get his wings sorted out as well and drop those off with the map. He didn’t need much sleep while he was here—he got a better rest next to Cazan anyway—so he would have plenty of time to work through his list in the two days he was at this Weyr.

Once he was given permission to leave, T’ryn headed back outside and did his best not to run all the way back to his weyr to begin working on everything.
