The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Aradissicath studied her Sands companion quietly for several minutes. The young gold had calmed considerably over the course of her time bound to the warm cavern. Malvayth still had her endearing qualities about her but she wasn’t quite as quick to react emotionally in one extreme or the other. Today might push that limit. She had done well for the Touching a week earlier with hundreds of Candidates wandering around but a Hatching was different. All of those kids would be on the Sands at the same time with hatchlings roaming every which way.

It wasn’t the first time Fort had had two golds on the Sands at the same time but this was the first one that had them so close together. Aradissicath discussed it first with Malvayth before bringing it to Rhaedalyn’s attention. They agreed a wall of rocks wasn’t necessary but Aradissicath and Xyreith would change where they normally stood by observing so they were closer to Malvayth’s precious eggs and could deter any wandering hatchling.

Thunder crashed and Aradissicath huffed at her eggs. They really did always seem to have the worst timing for making their entrance. It was evening, the humans likely wrapping up dinner or settling into their night-time routines. That wouldn’t have been too bad but it had started snowing an hour ago and with the thunder, it seemed like they were in for a bad storm. Visibility would be low so word would have to accompany the news of the Hatching to the other Weyrs and the Lord Holder that they should either stay home or be extremely cautious upon arriving.

But none would know about the Hatching at all if she didn’t telling Rhaedalyn and begin her humming. She had sent her rider away hours ago, telling her to take care of herself that evening with dinner and a bath. They knew the eggs were close but they had been through enough Hatchings now that Aradissicath knew she would be fine on her own for a while. It begins. Some eager ones by the look of things. Maybe only an hour or two before they start popping their heads out. Aradissicath rumbled with amusement as Rhaedalyn began her flustered dance around the weyr to send the letters off and get the girls looked after.

Malvayth, my babies are ready to find their mates. It will be busy in here for hours. Are you sure you’ll be okay? Are you ready to start humming with me to send out the call? Aradissicath stood and stretched out her wings, giving them a good shake. She loved being on the Sands but sometimes she forgot to stay active and stayed curled up with her eggs longer than she should. After that mighty stretch, she moved across the cavern to take up a spot where she was still close to her clutch but would also be a buffer to Malvayth’s—and not block the other gold’s view. It was important for Malvayth to see how a Hatching went and the young dragon was too excited and would be miserable if she couldn’t watch.

Everyone is welcome to come watch! If you’re only watching, please go directly to the stands, do not linger on the Sands or approach the Candidates. Candidates, you can go right onto the Sands and form up around the eggs and settle in for some waiting.

Candidates:
- Will have been told to wear shoes! Sturdy shoes to save their feet from the heat and standing for so long.
- Be in Candidate robes that more or less fit them.
- Will have hair pulled back in a pony-tail or a braid. In addition, there will be no jewellery, belt, sash, or anything ‘extra’. Don’t want anything to get tugged on and cause an injury.
- Aradissicath loves firelizards in day to day life but she’s not huge on distractions around her eggs. Firelizards will be allowed in but they must stay with the humans in the stands or up with the dragons on the ledges. If they go near the eggs or Candidates, they may not live to brag about it.

This is an NPC Impression. There will likely only be 4 Hatching posts with 11 eggs each and come out somewhat rapidly. This is just for fun so new Candidates can get some more play and it’s fun to have a big event happen sometimes.

And remember: The only female Candidates at this Hatching are those that have finished their healing training or have a special arrangement. I think that’s currently Dareji, Aederyn, and maybe August?

The alert for the Hatching went out around 6pm and the dragonets will start to appear between 7-8pm.

Malvayth had been watching Aradissicath's eggs with excitement, trying to determine if she could see them starting to move from her side of the Sands. Soon her own babies would be ready to make friends and meet their mates too! She'd done well so far to keep her excitement as low key and subtle as possible, or at least that's what she thought. She'd fussed over her own eggs to make sure that they were neatly together and out of the way to make sure that the larger clutch would have as much room as possible for all of their candidates.

Would she get as many candidates for her hatching? Mal knew she didn't have nearly as large of a clutch, but her babies were going to be wonderful and deserved as much adoration as any other batch. She gave her precious eggs another check, making sure that the extra special gold egg had a position of prominence, and then settled in so that she could peek her head easily around Aradissicath for a good view.

Ready! Mal eagerly chirped, the tip of her tail flicking back and forth in excitement. I will help as soon as you start humming. She'd already told Cazan, who was working on getting dressed, and both Lady and Sir were safely with her rider where they would be out of the way. She turned to her mother to curiously ask, Do you think any of them will find their mate in the stands? It was where she had found Cazan after all, and her rider was the best one out there. Maybe other good riders existed out there without knowing how to Stand properly!

Narinoa had finished his dinner and was just hanging out with a few other Candidates in the dining cavern as they ate when the call came for the Hatching. All around him Candidates quickly shovelled the rest of their food into their mouths so they could rush back to the barracks to prepare. He supposed he should do that as well given Aradissicath was a senior gold with enough clutches to her name that she wouldn’t call them too early. He knew there were times with some golds that Candidates were waiting around for three or more hours but word had it that this gold had it down to less than two hours now.

He joined the crowd that was leaving and dashed down to where his sad little cot and trunk sat waiting for him. Narinoa watched in amusement as the newly Searched panicked and wondered if they should bathe or what they were supposed to do as all the lessons suddenly fled their minds. He remembered being like that, overwhelmed and terrified at what he was about to walk into. So he spent a few minutes helping some, calming them down and telling them what they needed to do. Eventually he readied himself, pulling his mess of curls back into a ridiculous topknot to help keep his vision from being impaired and tossing on the plain and somewhat itchy robe. Despite the turn in the weather that had snow falling at a rapid rate and there being a chill in the air, Narinoa didn’t bundle up and stopped a few others from trying. It was a quick dash to the Hatching Ground and they wouldn’t need the added layers once inside—though he supposed a coat pile could be started on the ground by the door if needed.

But he jogged across the Bowl, making quick work of the distance despite the blowing snow whipping around. He shook dramatically as he walked inside and sighed in contentment as the heat worked to melt away the chill that tried to grab him. He redid his topknot as some strands blew loose in the wind while looking around at the crowd that was slowly gathering both on and off the Sands. Upon seeing some friends in the stands, Narinoa waved when their eyes met. Would this be his lucky Hatching? They’d know soon enough and he strode over to a spot that had a good view of the area.

Fediletch was just as excited as he had been with every other clutch he'd stood for. His food was immediately abandoned, he'd help clean up afterwards, and the first thing he did was start to herd some of the younger candidates who seemed anxious and confused out of the dining hall so that they could get into their robes and prepare for the hatching. With that initial bit of herding complete he focused on getting himself ready, getting into his robe and making sure Chuck was settled and knew to stay put.

The cold was nothing new, so Fetch took a page out of Narinoa's book and jogged out through the snowfall without a coat, making his way with the stream of other candidates to the warmth and excitement of the Sands. As much as he enjoyed the cold, there was just something nice about stepping out of it into the comforting toastiness. He took a quick look around to spot his friends and gave them waves before putting himself with a group of smaller candidates that he could easily try to pick up and lift out of harms way if anything went wrong.

Hopefully it wouldn't. Last time he'd been to a Fort hatching there had been a mauling, and he didn't blame the confused and clumsy baby for it, but he'd still prefer it didn't happen again if he could try to do something to help.

This clutch had definitely been a mixed bag as far as the Touching had gone, and Corvilis was wary about the hatching. Sure the odds were that most of the babies were decent enough and he'd just gotten unlucky with he ones he'd picked to touch at first, but part of him hoped that he wouldn't get any of those snotty little brats with their judgement. Still, any dragon at all was probably better than none... or at least most dragons were. This clutch seemed healthy, the gold had been in good shape, and no one was anticipating that anything was going to go wrong, so it would probably be fine.

He just had to hope that he impressed something decent. Corv had scarfed down his dinner before running to get changed, but unlike some of the others he brought his coat, pulling it around him tightly as he trudged through the snow to the Sands. He set it off to the side at the entrance, leaving Fern and Sky to guard it. Hopefully that would keep them busy enough and out of the way that no one would complain. He still thought it was silly they couldn't come, but if that was what the gold wanted that was what she'd get.

After a quick look around he spotted Narinoa and walked over, giving the man a casual nudge. "Hey. Let's hope we get one yeah?" He didn't expect to have a lot of conversation, but it was nice to have at least a friendly face nearby.

Oh no, it was happening. Zoremet was a bundle of nerves as he tried to get ready, at least he had already finished his food! But maybe that wasn't such a blessing after all since now his stomach was churning. This would probably be fine... he could do this! Sure it had been a while since the last time he'd Stood for a clutch, but Aradissicath usually had rather calm hatchings if he remembered the stories correctly.

Still, when he shivered and ran his way through the cold in his robes he immediately tried scanning the stands to look for friends and family for a bit of comfort and encouragement. He couldn't just back out if they were there after all! And sure it would be a big responsibility, but so had taking care of Pit and he'd done well with her he thought. Even if she was bad at delivering messages. She was with R'dal for the moment so that should keep her from getting into any trouble at least.

With smiles and waves to bolster his courage, Zoremet found a group to stand with as he watched the eggs with eager anticipation. Maybe he'd impress and maybe it would be the best thing that had happened to him like his other siblings and friends. He just had to keep optimistic is all. And if nothing happened, then maybe he could go hiking with R'dal while he waited for the next clutch too.

Landen stuffed the rest of his dinner in his mouth as soon as the call for candidates came through the dining hall. Why waste a good thing? Was his only thought as his check bulged with his food. There might have been an excited bounce to his usually languid and slow step as he darted through the barrack to stuff his body in robes and feet into sturdy boots. It didn't take him long to reach the hatching cavern and he glanced around at the rest of the candidates. So far so good and not a single egg had cracked before he'd had a chance at reaching the sands and Landen took a relaxed position with the rest.

He'd already made Pie fly up to the ledges with the dragons and didn't have to worry about keeping the blue from becoming a snack for Arradissicath. He grinned at Malvayth as the little gold seemed to be extra excitable. What kind of crazy would it be if her eggs suddenly started popping tops? But Landen knew they weren't quite ready. From what he understood in a few week's time they should be hard enough and ready enough to start cracking shell.

He bounced a little on his toes as he waited.

A’tay had been surprised when Mylorah asked him a week earlier if he would bring her along to the Hatching. He knew she didn’t want to accidentally Impress there like Cazan but her love for friends and Zoremet won out. Honestly, he had been surprised at how long she lasted before giving in. She really wasn’t the selfish sort and guilt would have destroyed her if their brother Impressed and she wasn’t there to see it.

Thankfully Xyxyth was large enough to support him and two passengers because of course he had already asked Zelana if she wanted to attend as well. She had yet to Stand or see a Hatching and he thought it would be nice for her to see how they went before being out there herself. When word came the Hatching was beginning but there was a snow storm in progress, A’tay hesitated. It was a risk he took if he didn’t know the weather at his aunt’s place but he had managed to avoid that happening so far. But he didn’t want to let anyone down and Xyxyth was supportive and confident they would be fine.

After making sure both women were dressed appropriately for the trip and weather, everyone was loaded up and Xyxyth took off. The instant they emerged above Fort Weyr left A’tay blind—though it was already past sunset so the blowing snow really didn’t make much of a difference to him. But the thunder that rumbled soon after that thought had them quickly going to ground. He had heard there could be lightning in the snow like there was with rain and A’tay didn’t want to be in the sky if that should happen.

Upon landing, A’tay sent Xyxyth and Shadow to watch up on the ledges, confident the dragon would keep the firelizard under control. A’tay shyly took Zelly’s hand to lead her up to the stands to a bench that had enough space for them and T’ryn and Cazan if they wanted to join them. He wasn’t sure if Mylorah would stay or find some friends but she sat beside him, eyes scanning the Candidates. She spotted their brother first and they both waved at him, letting him know they were there for him.

Mylorah loved flying but she had never been more thankful to finally land and dash inside. Not only was it cold but the weather was a bit terrifying and she had half a mind to tell A’tay they were all staying the night if the weather continued like it was. She didn’t want Xyxyth going back out there if he didn’t need to. But with that worry currently over, she followed A’tay and Zelana up the stairs and plunked herself down next to her brother after removing her coat. It became a cushion for her so she wouldn’t have to worry about holding it or having it be in the way. The gloves and hat were also removed and shoved into a pocket—pockets were the best invention, no question.

She greeted a couple of friends who passed by in the stands but Mylorah was more focused on the Candidates that were gathering. She saw Fetch first as he easily stood out amongst the shorter and younger Candidates he had stationed himself near. He was an absolute sweetheart and Mylorah didn’t expect anything less from him. She was so grateful there was someone else out there looking after the new Candidates like she often tried to do. Since he currently wasn’t paying much attention in her direction, she continued sweeping the groups and saw Zoremet. Just as she was about to call out to him, he looked up and she grinned and waved with both hands at him. How she wished she was down there to keep an eye on him!

Out of all of them, Zoremet was the biggest culprit for daydreaming and Mylorah could see how tense he was as well. Had they bullied him into Standing again? If he didn’t Impress this time, she would check in with him and make sure he was happy and comfortable with the idea. He wasn’t the only one in their family that hadn’t Impressed yet and none of them would like down on him if he decided he didn’t want to. Wynera currently didn’t have any desire to Stand and then there she was, Standing as much as she could and still leaving solo.

After giving Zoremet a reassuring smile and making a heart with her hands to express her love for him, Mylorah stopped embarrassing him and turned back to Fetch, finally catching his eye and waving to him. If she happened to pull a Cazan that night, then he better Impress as well to keep her company.

Speaking of Cazan—Mylorah smiled as the goldrider and T’ryn showed up being extra adorable that day. Being mated agreed with her brother and it seemed pregnancy agreed with Cazan as the woman seemed to have that glow women liked to talk about. Mylorah didn’t have any desire to experience that firsthand but it was attractive on Cazan at least. When they joined their little group, Mylorah jumped up and gave Cazan a tight hug to officially welcome her into the family. “Hey! Congratulations on being mated!” She pulled back and grinned, “and the wedding as well, I suppose. You’re going to have your hands full with Yfris, possibly more so than with the baby.”

Zelana thought she had a better idea of how snow worked after that trip to visit A'tay's family, and she had definitely bundled up as well as she could, but the storm going on caught her off guard and had her squeaking softly and squeezing onto A'tay when they had initially arrived. It had never occurred to her that snow could storm like this! She was grateful for the warm shelter of the Sands, still shivering and clinging to A'tay's hand just a little more tightly than she intended as they made their way to a bench to sit.

"That was exciting," she said through a brief chatter of teeth, "but I think I'm fine with not playing out in that." At least it didn't take too long to warm back up, and soon Zelly was taking a page out of Mylorah's book and taking off her own coat to use as a cushion before leaning comfortably against A'tay as she watched the candidates and the eggs. When T'ryn arrived with his girlfriend, mate she corrected herself, she grinned at them. "Oh! It is good to finally meet you! I'm A'tay's girlfriend, Zelana. Congratulations on... well everything!"

She kept her introduction brief and so dreadfully boring and polite, Zelly didn't even give T'ryn a wink! Maybe if the weather didn't clear up and they ended up just stranded in the Weyr she could have a more personal run in with the man, but for now she was content to behave and keep up the secrecy that made their little game so much fun. Zelly turned back to A'tay and smiled as she gave him a quick kiss. "I think I see a shiny egg over there by the other gold. That one is Cazan's right?"

Mal's early warning had given Cazan a bit more time to get ready, so she wasn't feeling too rushed as she held her mate's hand on their way to the Sands. It wasn't the first hatching she'd attended, but that last one had been quite dramatic and frankly distracting once she'd impressed, so she wanted to see one again with fresh eyes. Especially since Malvayth's clutch was due to hatch so soon.

That and she'd get a chance to see more of T'ryn's family since they had become mates. He'd said the news had been very well received, but it was another thing to see his family in person and know that they were now hers too. Caz gave his hand a squeeze as they spotted A'tay and Mylorah in the stands, along with another young woman she was sure was the girlfriend she'd heard about.

She grinned, the weather doing nothing to dampen her mood especially with a tight hug from Mylo. "Thank you! I'm incredibly lucky to have T'ryn. And Yfris is a bit of a handful, but he's secretly very sweet and behaved when he wants to be. Oh hello!" She turned to Zelana and gave her a warm smile as well. "Thank you too, it's good to meet you."

Once she and T'ryn were settled on the bench she nodded. "That's Malvayth in the back. She's very proud of her clutch even though it's much smaller. Only thirteen, but it has a gold egg." Caz gave her mate's hand another squeeze of excitement that the clutch would soon hatch, she'd no longer be grounded, and they could try to figure out their next move from there.

Knowing that people were talking about her, Malvayth turned her head towards the stands and gave a small nod in greeting. She would have babbled a bit, but this wasn't her hatching, so she was trying not to be too distracting.

T’ryn paled when he saw Zelana. Of course she would be there—she was dating his brother! He knew this moment would eventually come where his mate would meet his secret lover and wasn’t that part of the stupid thrill he got with the sneaking around? He knew Cazan’s lovers and she knew he had one, just not who it was. He felt a bit horrible for keeping it from her but the fact that Zelana was dating A’tay was enough reason to keep it quiet. He didn’t want to think about what Cazan would think about his kinks or that he was an awful brother for doing what he was doing.

He wasn’t the best at lying but he was confident he did well in pretending something wasn’t happening and greeted Zelana and A’tay like he normally did when he dropped by Ista. Still, he quickly turned his attention back to his mate, smiling and returning the squeeze to his hand. “I told you they’d still love you,” he teased Cazan and kissed her gently on the lips. He was blaming the hormones for the fear that had cropped up after they became mates but Mylorah’s greeting seemed to help calm her down.

But Mylorah’s words about Yfris had him frowning at his sister. “How well do you know Yfris?” The grin he was given in reply was enough to make him groan. Not only was he in… something with the lordling, but from what Cazan had told him, it seemed like K’dar was sleeping with Yfris, and Mylorah had at some point as well. “Your husband is going to get punched one day—and not by you this time.” T’ryn felt it was best to forget he learned anything that night and hoped K’dar stayed in the dark as well.

“Oh, there’s Zor!” T’ryn quickly changed the subject as he pointed out his brother to Cazan. He’d already introduced them soon after Zoremet arrived in Fort but it was good to know where people were on the Sands and that was the sibling he wanted to focus on as he pretended he wasn’t tangled up in the love lives of three other siblings.

R’dal was so excited! He loved Hatchings—especially since he had Impressed. He knew the nerves of Standing and didn’t miss that part or the expectations he had put upon himself at that time. Now, he could sit and cheer on friends. He still got worried and wrung his hands when nerves were piling up or held his breath when something scary happened but he was able to enjoy them more overall.

And now he had a firelizard friend! He gave Pit another scratch under the neck as she settled onto his shoulder. He didn’t mind looking after her as she was fairly well-behaved and just so dang cute. He purposely sat a bit further up, though, just to keep her from being any sort of distraction to the hatchlings. Besides, if F’drel did come, R’dal knew he’d prefer to sit further back so there would be less people around them and behind them. Given the weather and that it seemed like Quinvalis wasn’t Standing this time, R’dal wasn’t sure if his friend would make it but he wouldn’t hold it against him if he didn’t.

Upon spotting Zoremet, R’dal jumped up and down and frantically waved to get his attention. He flashed him some thumbs up and grinned, hoping his young friend was doing okay. He seemed a bit out of sorts after the Touching and R’dal wondered if he even wanted to be out there at all. He sat back down and apologised to Pit for the disturbance, giving her some more affection. There were others Standing that he was definitely there to support—friends and those he had Searched—but the other important one was Aederyn. It was her first Hatching and despite being awkward around each other after the story about them came out, she was still a friend and he adored her and wanted her to know he was there for her. As soon as he spotted her, she was getting the same enthusiastic greeting Zoremet got.

The air was charged with an assortment of emotions from nerves to excitement to anxiety. That seemed enough to start spurring on the dragonets as several eggs started to wobble more than they had been just minutes before. As a hush took over the crowds with only the dragons still humming, one foot kicked through the shell and vanished just as quickly. Rhaedalyn missed what colour it was but Aradissicath hadn’t and she chuckled to their little group. Rhaedalyn gave her a look before turning back to see a nose poking through and working on the hole until a head appeared and she was left chuckling as well. “Not the strong start I know you old guys hope for,” she teased R’nya with a fond smile and leaned into him.

Green01 finally made it free of Egg 16 and stumbled on the uneven surface a moment before taking in the crowd around her. She didn’t take long to find her boy and they were leaving just as Egg 5 started losing bits of shell and Egg 30 was right behind it. Green02 and Green03 joined the party which had Rhaedalyn giggling now. Aradissicath came from a clutch that was all green aside from her and while she didn’t think that would happen now with such a large clutch, it certainly gave off the appearance as the two girls hurried off in opposite directions for their mates.

Egg 18 proved it wouldn’t be an all green clutch as Bronze01 poked his head out of the top of his egg before rocking it over so he could crawl out with ease. The clever fellow took a moment to shake himself out and flapped his wings a couple of times to stretch them and hope for balance as he trotted off toward a group of men. He walked right on by Narinoa and Corvilis without even a glance in their direction, going instead for the man standing several feet behind them.

Green04 managed an escape from Egg 11 and quietly Impressed to a boy on the opposite side of where her bronze brother had attracted attention. She seemed to be the last one in a big hurry as the eggs continued to wobble and crack but the inhabitants struggled to break free.

After a handful of minutes, Egg 23 toppled over, hitting Egg 9. No damage seemed to take place but it did spur them both on as limbs and noses kept peeking through before Blue01 and Blue02 appeared almost at the same time. They touched noses in greeting and trotted off in the same direction. Blue01 stopped momentarily by Zoremet but it was another boy that ended up stepping forward to greet him and walk off together as Blue02 and his boy fell in step beside them.

Egg 36 followed suit at a more leisurely pace as Brown01 introduced himself with a squawk that didn’t come out quite like the roar he intended before charging toward Fediletch and his group. Before he could do much more than scare everyone, Green05—who had escaped Egg 44 around the same time—came crashing into her brother, sending them both tumbling and rolling several times before coming to a stop. Green05 screeched at her brother while Brown01 flapped his wings angrily but finally relented and turned away where his mate had been waiting, panic etched on his face. Green05 chirped at Fediletch before going up to one of the boys by him and nudging him with her nose.

During that commotion, Egg 3 had spilled out Blue03 and he had trotted off towards his mate without any fuss. Egg 43 kept shaking until Brown02 finally escaped. He was much quieter than his fellow brown brother had been as he skirted the edges of the crowd as if leery of them before finally scurrying by Landen to get to his mate.

Mylorah is already here, Xyxyth brought her. Zoremet is out on the Sands. T'ryn and Cazan have arrived as well. K'dar cursed as he ran down the hall, still buttoning up a shirt. He'd already apologized to D'hys for the interruption, but he had to go support his brother. He'd go back once things were all said and done if he could, but hopefully he would be too busy congratulating a brand new rider and his new dragon.

You might want to hurry. I am! K'dar snapped. No need to be so grumpy, it's not my fault that the eggs decided to hatch while you were in the middle of something. K'dar sighed, grumbling a soft apology under his breath as he ran out into the cold and towards the Sands. Hopefully he wasn't too late!

K'dar arrived just in time to see the first several babies crawling around, and stopped to hold his breath as a blue seemed to eye Zoremet. But it moved on and he sighed, glad that he at least hadn't missed his brother's impression. He spotted his troupe of siblings on one of the benches and quickly moved to go sit with Mylorah. His face was flushed from a combination of bitter cold and interrupted arousal, his hair was a mess, and he had a few fresh bruises that he thought were hidden well enough under his clothes. "Sorry I'm late, did I miss anything exciting? I see Zoremet is still out there."

Madiquel had spent the cold, miserable day up at Healer Hall, before making her way down to Fort Weyr for the evening. She had sent Clover to her father with a message that she would be staying the night in Fort. The weather was too much, and she didn’t want to risk Zezeth’s health, much to the young green dragon’s disgruntlement. As such, Madiquel was eating dinner with Rhaedalyn and the girls when the call came in, and she rushed to help her friend set the girls up for the duration of the Hatching, before darting off to the room Madiquel had acquired after graduation, so she could change. She was probably one of the only greenriders (or any riders, really) who had a personal weyr at two different Weyrs, and a Hall.

After changing into a warm winter dress, with leggings underneath, Madiquel made her way to the Hatching sands, backtracking to take Rhaedalyn’s Weyrwoman route through the Weyr so she wouldn’t have to go outside. Her dragon wasn’t quite as willing to push the social norms by using Aradissicath’s weyr to get to the Sands, and so the young green walked through the storm, not willing to risk breaking a wing in the rough winds – or get struck by lightning, which would be just her luck. Zezeth trotted in behind the last few Candidates, blowing out a snort when one of them eyeballed her, before shaking off the snow and cold. Glancing around, she gave a croon of excitement when she spotted Xyxyth, and quickly launched herself to join him, rumbling a soft greeting as she smooshed herself between him and some random dragon, uncaring.

Since she came out behind them, and she wasn’t sure which of her friends would be arriving – or where they’d be sitting – Madiquel opted to join the Weyrleaders, curtsying playfully when R’nya lifted an eyebrow at her, managing to make the bronzerider quirk a half smile. Excited, and hoping for a good show – but not one that was too exciting – Madiquel settled in beside Rhaedalyn, chatting cheerfully when spoken to. The beginning of the Hatching, with three green dragons piling out of their eggs, had Madiquel giggling alongside Rhaedalyn. Poor R’nya looked slightly put out, but Madiquel wasn’t sure if it was the three green, or Rhaedalyn calling him old.

A good start, the green teased Madiquel, knowing that four greens – while needed – weren’t the top priority for the beginning of a Hatching. Despite that, Zezeth was pleased to see her colour-mates break shell, and all of them strong and healthy. Indeed, Madiquel laughed quietly, glancing up at her dragon and finally noticing the bronze she was snuggled up against. A’tay was there! Well, she wasn’t surprised, but she was no less delighted that her best friend was hiding somewhere in the crowds. In the lull between eggs, Madiquel’s gaze raked over the crowds, finally spotting A’tay with friends and family. When he glanced at her – she had a feeling the dragons let him know she was looking his way – she waved with a bright smile.

Madelan was eating in the dining hall with E'rid and L'tri when the call came for the candidates to make their way to the caverns. He didn't rush, placing an open mouth kiss against E'rid's mouth as he winked at the bluerider across the table before sauntering away. Madelan would have to figure out what to do about those two before too long. If the plans he wanted for himself came to fruition neither of them would be necessary for too much longer. But it was damn good fun while it lasted.

Robes on and feet shoved into well-made boots Mads made his way to the hatching sands where he waited with the rest. He chuckled when a trio of greens broke shell followed by bronze. He straightened, knowing exactly what he wanted for himself and as if Madelan could will the creature to him he stared hard. But it wasn't to be and the solid bronze went to another man. Damnation, he thought to himself and watched as another green followed by a quartet of blues made their way to their bondeds.

He smirked as a brown showed up. He supposed that if he couldn't have a bronze, brown could do just as well, but he knew the likelihood of becoming a weyrleader on brown was slim. He sighed heavily as the fierce-looking fellow and another green managed to find their boys without some much as a by your leave. Was he going to be left stands again today? E'rid had assured him that he would impress when he'd been searched but perhaps the greenrider was more interested in the things Mads could do for him instead of the truth.

Another blue and a brown went to two other men, Mads face schooled to arrogant lines as he tapped a toe against the sands.

It had been good to see Mylorah up in the stands offering some support and Fediletch managed to sneak in a final wave before the eggs started to hatch and stole his attention. Things were off to a good start at first with the group of pretty little greens! He couldn't stop grinning as he watched the hatchlings and all of their antics, but then the first little brown came charging towards his group.

Fetch was moving to snatch one boy up to just spin him off to the side and out of the way of a collision when the little green collided with the brown instead. He gave some of the younger boys some calming reassurance as he carefully watched the hatchlings untangle. He was happy to see the enthusiastic brown find his mate, and his heart almost skipped a beat when the green chirped at him.

Had she thanked him? Was she just acknowledging that he'd been ready to do something to try to keep the boy she was after safe? He didn't know! Either way, Fediletch was absolutely thrilled and quickly gave the boy congratulatory cheer before they walked off to the side. He turned his attention back to the, watching the other babies meet their new riders, hoping that it wouldn't be too much longer before he was found too.

Zoremet was glad that he'd managed to get that bit of extra courage because once the first eggs started to shake and crack, he almost wanted to run away. But how could be afraid of those cute little greens? He almost wondered if he was meant for one of those adorable little hatchlings but they went off and found different boys to impress.

That was fine by Zoremet, but with how adorable they'd been it was proving to be a very good start. Standing wasn't so bad! He could do this again sometime, he was sure. Unless he impressed here, he supposed. There were still so many eggs left, so it wouldn't make sense to just give up on the idea already.

The first bronze that popped out of his egg had him thinking about his siblings, and how all of his brothers had impressed to bronzes. He didn't think he was really bronze material, but what if it was something that ran in families? What if there was something in his blood that tricked the dragons into thinking he was more important than he really was?

He took a small step back when the blue approached and stopped. Zory wondered if it wanted him to do something, but it was just waiting for someone else it seemed. He watched it go, his thoughts starting to wander. If he did impress a dragon, would he end up getting it lost too? Or would it keep him from getting lost? If he stopped getting lost then what would Pit do? Hopefully dragon and firelizard would get along either way.

The call came during dinner, and having just finished, Aederyn made quick work of changing and tying her hair back. Grabbing the robe gifted to her by her brother at Gather those months ago, she bounded across the bowl, only stopping in the blustering storm to wave a few other new candidates along toward the Sands.

She left the pale green robe out of the way to one side of the entrance to the grounds, not needing it in the warmth, and commanded Rudi to stand watch over it. The little brown chirped and snuggled in the fabric, eyes whirling with excitement.

Weaving among the other candidates, Aederyn took up a post somewhere near one of the eggs she thought she had touched earlier, waving to R'dal up in the stands. It was good to see him here, cheering everyone on! The humming grew louder and more intense, the air of anticipation heavy. Finally, after what seemed to be both an eternity and an instant, an egg cracked! Hope filled her chest and stole her breath as she allowed herself to believe she might Impress, though dread lingered, too…what if she didn’t? She watched each new baby as they moved toward their life mates, cheering internally when each made Impression, happy for her fellow candidates, and hoping that a hatchling would find her, too.

There wasn’t much time between the last Impression and the next breaking of shell. These babies clearly had places to go and people to see! Green06 came from Egg 8, tripping over her feet a few times on her trot to her bonded while Green07 had a bit more struggle from Egg 13 before finding her way out.

Egg 1 was the next to find freedom, shell pieces falling from Blue04 as he shook himself off. He went off toward Aederyn before stopping, cocking his head, and then turning back the way he came so he could go to the opposite side of the ring of Candidates, Impressing to a man.

What happened next, Rhaedalyn wouldn’t believe if she hadn’t witnessed it herself. Many Hatchings could go quickly with dragonets bursting free at nearly the same time or in rapid succession but this time, she swore they were all at the same time. It even took her a moment to count how many were now roaming the Sands as seven greens scattered in every direction. A lone male stood in the middle of it all as Bronze02 quietly surveyed the chaos, as if waiting for the sand to settle before moving to his mate.

The greens were all over the place, sniffing at a Candidate before moving on. Some had clearly bonded already with the way some impatient boys crossed their arms or rolled their eyes while trying to get their new bundle of joy under control. Amidst the chaos, Rhaedalyn saw a few Candidates panicking and falling but they were given thumbs up when a healer rushed out to check on them. No injuries, just tripping over themselves. She couldn’t blame them, not when injuries were common with so many hatchlings loose at once.

It took a few minutes of organizing on the back end, the harpers logging the Hatching having a fit over the mess of their notes and which ones hatched first or Impressed first. Rhaedalyn knew the bronze was somewhere in the middle of it, having watched the way he stared intently at one specific boy until the boy finally sighed and waved for the hatchling to follow him.

But with seven greens out at once, it was loud. They had chirped in excitement and their mind voices were just as loud as they talked over one another during their Impressions and greeting various Candidates on their way off to eat and get cleaned up.

A few more eggs were rattling but Rhaedalyn let out a deep breath as it seemed like they would have at least a few minutes to relax after that. She patted Aradissicath’s leg, still amused at the amount of greens that had already appeared but there were also two bronzes! She hoped for at least one more—two if she wanted to be greedy.

Semath crooned in delight as so many young greens hatched so early. She knew it wasn’t considered the best omen by the riders, but she loved all the little green hatchlings and watching them find their mates like she’d found her L’gan. As with any Hatching, his heart was in his throat to some degree, ready and waiting to attend to injuries. Luckily this hatching seemed to be starting tame, compared to some of the others, though he knew it was still just the beginning.

There was a bit of chaos as seven—seven!—greens suddenly burst onto the sands. Candidates scrambled to make space or get out of the way of the determined dragonets, and a few tumbled to the ground. Dashing over to check on them, he was relieved to find them all jittery but unharmed other than their pride. He flashed a quick sign to the Weyrwoman that all was well.

Headed back to his post, feeling almost relaxed, he blanched as Semath relayed the news that the watchdragon no doubt had shared with the Weyrleaders simultaneously. Healers were needed outside urgently; Erebuth and B’kit had tumbled from the sky after a lightning strike. Cursing himself for thinking a hatching could ever go smoothly and jinxing the whole thing, he made sure enough of those Weyr folk trained at the hall were present to deal with anything on the Sands, then sprinted off to help.

It seemed like the greens weren’t done as three more greens were soon showing their adorable faces. They were calmer than their sisters, if just barely, two going off in the same direction while the third went to another group to find her mate. Again, everything went smoothly and Rhaedalyn bit her lip at the thought, worried about jinxing the remainder of their time together. They were just over halfway through and anything could still happen.

As Brown03 emerged from egg 34, Rhaedalyn held her breath and hoped he wasn’t as grumpy as the last one. He didn’t appear to be as he delicately crawled free of the shell and stepped around the remnants of others before coming to a halt and sitting down. A boy finally stepped forward, asking the hatchling to come to him and he shook his head before insisting he wouldn’t go near that group. The boy was frowning but went to the dragon and led him off in a long roundabout way to where the feeding buckets awaited him. As they passed, Rhaedalyn caught the explanation of not thinking some of those boys trustworthy or worthy in general. She eyed the Candidates and wondered if they needed to better check up on Candidates and more frequently.

Green18 and Green19 took that moment to add to the green caravan that seemed to be taking place with small interruptions of bronze and brown. She hadn’t been tracking them clearly but Rhaedalyn was willing to bet they weren’t the last but among the last of the greens they would see. She smiled as they also found their mates with little confusion.

Egg 10 wobbled and fell over to spill Bronze03 onto the sand. He looked a little dazed and wobbled himself when he stood. But he seemed fine as he went toward Madelan and then Impressed to a boy standing near him.

Surprising no one, Green20 came along next, escaping Egg 7 in a very ungraceful manner. She ended up head-butting Egg 40 which helped Blue05 break free but only after his egg joined in the game of dominoes and toppled into Egg 12 which Brown04 was just working out of. All three hatchlings were very vocal about the mess they were in and a bit of screeching and tail lashing took place before they separated and went to their mates.

Blue06 stealthily snuck free of Egg 26 during the fight, waiting until it seemed like his siblings weren’t going to truly attack each other or him as he peered out from behind another egg. He followed his clumsy sister and while she found her mate quickly, he took a bit longer, keening as panic started to set in until a younger boy dashed across the sand and threw his arms around the blue’s neck in a tight hug. Rhaedalyn gave a sigh of relief as they avoided losing that one.

Zoremet was rudely awoken from his day dreaming by a green zooming by, and then another. He took a look around and realized there were several running around loudly chirping and chattering. How had he missed that? Had he been that zoned out or had they all just come in one batch all of a sudden?

At least that had him paying attention again, enough so that he saw some of the healers immediately start running out of the Sands. What was going on? There must have been some sort of emergency to call them away in such a hurry! He looked towards the stands at his family and saw that K'dar had also managed to join them at some point. He watched as he held back their sister from trying to get up as well. So that probably meant it was someone they knew.

Hopefully whoever it was would be okay. Zoremet could already see ripples of emotion in the stands as some sort of bad news was spreading. He didn't like this one bit, but there wasn't anything he could do but stay out of the way, so he tried to turn his attention back to the eggs and the hatchlings as they roamed around and picked their new mates. Hopefully by the time this was all over there would be some sort of good news about whatever had happened.

So far the hatching seemed to be going rather well. The babies were hatching at a good pace, none had gone between, and other than the storm it seemed like a rather good night. Maybe it would be good enough that he'd get to watch a sibling impress!

B'kit and Erebuth have been struck by the storm, the healers are seeing to them. K'dar sat bolt upright, his head immediately turning to follow the healers as they sprinted out. "Oh no, not Kitt..." he knew it was a mistake as soon as he'd said it and he immediately grabbed onto his sister to keep her from doing anything rash.

"The healers have him, it's okay," he said in hushed whispers. "I think he was hit by lightning?" Tiberuth quickly confirmed and K'dar nodded. "Tiber will let us know if anything changes." The bronze had already begun to move, settling in to cuddle with Semath with a soothing rumble, quietly offering her a bit of reassurance while also thanking her for updates.

K'dar gave Mylorah a tight hug then tried to encourage her to sit back down. "We have the rest of the hatching to get through and even once that's over we should stay out of the way until the healers are sure they're fine enough for visitors."

Two greens made their appearances, nearly stealing the spotlight from the little blue that made his way toward the redhead. She watched him make his way toward her before he stopped and stared for a moment. Smiling, she made it a point to allow her emotions to just be, hoping the blue would find something in her mind and heart that he liked. But no…no. He blinked, clocking his head to one side, and deciding she wasn’t quite right, moved off the way he came.

It was like a punch to the gut. She wanted to chase after him, but knew that wasn’t how things worked. Frustrated and disappointed, she chewed at the inside of her cheek, biting down until, in some sense of morbid satisfaction, she tasted the metallic taste of blood. She blinked back the tears that threatened to spill, watching the hatchling as he found his life mate across the ring of candidates. To be so close… There would be more, though. She prepared herself, too, that her dragon might not be in this clutch. She had a long while before she grew too old to stand, and therefore had a long while to find her life mate. The tears came again, though now in happiness as she watched as Impression was made. There was no sense in holding onto bitterness. Any negative thoughts could very well turn away her dragon, if she or he were here.

There was a cacophony as a number of greens hatched all at once, shrieking and chittering, noisily starting to wander among the candidates until they found their bonded. She sidestepped out of the way as one came close, querulously chirping as she moved determinedly past to a young man behind her. A domino act of various eggs sent a few hatchlings into a bit of a tiff, and she moved to be there to help, if the need arose, but they all found their humans without issue. There seemed to be some sort of commotion outside, as a number of the healers on call and stationed around the sands rushed out of the cavern. She hoped all was well… More eggs rocked, though, and she returned her attention to the event at hand.

Corvilis understood that greens were the most common color, but he still couldn't help but feel that there were too many already here at this hatching. He was about to comment as such when he saw a healer sprinting up and saying something to Narinoa. Wait, was that something about B'kit and Buthy Boy? He started to ask, but Nari was already running off.

Fuck, hopefully the bluerider would be okay. He considered trying to ditch the hatching, but there was still the chance he could Impress and the weather sounded like it was only getting worse. He'd just stay and finish this and ask his friend what the fuck had happened next time he saw him if he hadn't found out on his own by then.

For now he could deal with getting snubbed by the dragons so far, they were probably jerks who wouldn't know how to appreciate him anyway. But he was supposed to be thinking good and happy thoughts or something in order to have the best chance of attracting a dragon. So he took a deep breath to refocus and tried to think more positive thoughts. B'kit would probably be fine, and if he managed to impress a nice dragon then he could share that bit of good news with the bluerider when he saw him later on.

Rhaedalyn was still worried about the visiting blue pair that was struck by lightning but she knew they were being tended to and Semath was updating Aradissicath and Xyreith so their attention could remain on the happier event. It wouldn't do to diminish this moment for all the Candidates, especially those that Impressed.

While she wouldn't call it a silence with the humming dragons and whispered comments about the Hatching and injury outside, the eggs did quiet down. It seemed like less cracking of shells or grunts of struggle of little ones trying to break free. It stretched on for fifteen minutes until four blues decided they wouldn't be upstaged by their sisters and started popping out almost as rapidly as the seven greens of earlier.

They were a bit rowdier, playing with each other and racing toward the same groups of boys before veering off in their various directions. Blue07 and Blue08 ran by Corvilis, one stopping a bit away from him while the other continued on a bit further until his boy bent down and hugged him. Blue09 and Blue10 scattered in opposite directions, one playfully darting around a group of girls to get to his boy standing behind them while the other skidded to a dramatic stop and fell on his face in front of his mate.

Green21 wiggled her way out of Egg 33 and gave an adorable yawn before going on her way and Impressing. Green22 wasn't far behind as she left Egg 41 a few minutes later to find her mate among a group of girls and boys. For a moment there seemed to be some confusion about who had Impressed as the green chatted with a wide-eyed girl who kept nodding at the hatchling. It wasn't until the hatchling left with a boy that they figured out where the bond had landed.

With that green intermission out of the way, Blue11, Blue12, and Blue13 joined in on the blue wave that sent them all to the same group of boys, Impressing to what Rhaedalyn knew were a pair of brothers and she suspected the third boy was a friend of theirs with the way they all cheered and laughed as they moved off together.

Only two eggs remained and as the minutes ticked by, Rhaedalyn felt the pressure mounting. Would they hatch? Aradissicath was known to have a dud or two in some of her clutches, would these be counted among them? Aradissicath wouldn't let them call it, however. The eggs were cracked and she knew the babies were still fine, just tired.

Several more minutes passed and Egg 24 finally started moving again and Brown05 spilled out. He seemed frustrated at the delay and entrance, kicking at the sand as he got to his feet but that mood seemed to pass as his gaze shot right to the man he knew was his and walked there with his head held high. No undignified racing around for this fellow!

And while the ending wasn't quite as impactful as the beginning--or the explosion in the middle--the final egg, Egg 25, finally found it time to debut Green23. To further punctuate her slow start, she meandered along, stopping to sniff at some of the discarded shells, greeting Candidates that she passed, and finally stopping at a boy that had been smiling the entire time as he watched his lifemate leave her impression on others after Impressing on him.

All went to NPC males
Egg 17 – Blue07
Egg 28 – Blue08
Egg 29 – Blue09
Egg 22 – Blue10
Egg 33 – Green21
Egg 41 – Green22
Egg 38 – Blue11
Egg 32 – Blue12
Egg 19 – Blue13
Egg 24 – Brown05
Egg 25 – Green23

It was exciting to see all the babies hatching, even more so to see them all finding their mates with nothing going wrong. No lost babies, no mangled candidates, no new horror stories. Zoremet was able to actually relax and smile at the antics, and day dream about how he'd meet his little dragon one day. He still wasn't sure what he would get; some of the other candidates would talk about how they felt they were destined for a specific color or actively hoping for one. He still wasn't sure, all he could do was hope that his future mate was out there somewhere.

His hopes for this clutch were dwindling up to the last egg, though he smiled at the little green as she wandered around and greeted everyone. It was over and he'd survived, even if he didn't Impress Zoremet was left relieved. He could do this, maybe the smooth hatching was a sign that he should keep Standing. He'd definitely feel a bit more relaxed going into the next one at least, or so he hoped.

He turned his attention back to the stands as people began to wander off and he spotted his siblings still looking distraught. With a frown, Zoremet jogged over to join them and find out what exactly had happened outside of the Sands.

Corvilis tried to stay focused and positive on the hatching, but his eyes kept glancing back towards the entrance. There weren't too many more eggs left, at least not compared to how many there were when this all started. He jumped slightly as a pair of blues ran by. Remembering stories he'd heard about trampled candidates he decided to worry more about his own skin for the moment. He could check in on B'kit later.

He watched another pair of blues hatch and scatter, and then a couple of greens. One particularly chatty green seemed to have bonded a girl... no wait, she was walking off with a boy now. That had to be confusing. Hopefully when he impressed it would be clear cut and without a big fuss. Corvilis impatiently snapped his fingers in a lazy rhythm as he waited for the last eggs to hatch.

As soon as the last brown and the silly green finished up, he was making his way back to the entrance and his jacket. There would be other hatchings, for now he had some snooping to do, and maybe a get well gift to acquire.
