Did one normally dress up to attend a hatching? Gangleri wasn't sure what the protocol was for that sort of event, but precaution along with his own general need for a bit of flamboyance and flair had him shopping for at least a new jacket, perhaps also a shirt. It was still early yet, he wasn't sure if Quil had heard back from her son if he was going to Stand or not for the upcoming clutches at Fort, but it never hurt to be prepared. That and he could wear anything he did get for one of the many Turnover events he would doubtless be attending if not officiating or performing.

Should he get something for Quilriana too? A nice new fur lined coat would certainly help with the cold winter, maybe some gloves so that she would be less likely to crush his hand as he offered moral support. He still wasn't sure if she had been joking or not about that, but better safe than sorry. He was on his way to a merchant who specialized in women's clothing when a flash of long brown hair and an eerily familiar face caught his eye.

Was it... no. That was ridiculous. Gangleri came to an abrupt stop and tried to spot the woman again. There she was! And her face... it was a face he hadn't seen in a year and he found himself almost running to the woman as his heart began to pound. He reached out, a hand on her shoulder to spin her around. "Jav--" he cut himself off to stare at the young woman. No, this wasn't Javira at all, she was much too young... a daughter? No, Javira didn't have any daughters, only a few sons with her husband... at least that's what he'd thought. But here she was, a match for his love's face but over a decade younger.

Gangleri realized he was staring and quickly withdrew his hand. "Ah, sorry. I thought... thought you were someone else... I'm Gangleri, wandering Harper. May I know your name as well? Are you from the area?" The more he looked at her face the more uncanny it became. Even her eyes were the same shape, the same light brown. He swallowed, took an unconscious step back and tried to take a deep breath to help cam himself down.

She had been kidnapped by her brother earlier that morning in his latest attempt to get back to seeing each other with more frequency. Mylorah didn’t mind that at all as she had found his time as a weyrling in another Weyr to be a bit rough. But his latest idea was shopping, something she really didn’t see the appeal of. Gathers were fun since there was dancing and some foods she could try but she was never in need of anything for herself—though sometimes she found something that was perfect for a friend.

That morning had been no different but she was enjoying the time spent strolling around with K’dar and chatting about whatever came to mind. Too bad she couldn’t convince him to do all of that in Ista where it was a lot warmer. She’d had to wear thick leggings and a coat with her dress—and she had silently kicked herself for not going with pants after all. She always forgot exactly how much colder Telgar Hold was until she was there again for a sharp reminder. That was why she was on her way to get them some hot cocoa while K’dar browsed books. It was a small selection but Mylorah knew it would distract her brother for a while all the same and she wanted something to warm her up.

She was making her way to where she thought that vendor still was when a hand grabbed her. Thinking it was K’dar sneaking up on her she turned with a smile and jumped a little as a stranger stood there instead. It seemed to have been mistaken identity, however, and Mylorah returned to smiling, feeling a bit bad for the man who seemed a bit shaken, likely from embarrassment. “It’s lovely to meet you, Harper Gangleri. I’m Mylorah, a weyrbred Candidate based in Ista.” She thought about using the ridiculous title she and Tazikel came up with for her when he introduced her to some of the more obnoxious lords but that had the potential to come across as mocking the harper or making him further regret his mix up.

"Ista? Well, that is quite the hike you've taken. You are probably freezing. Do you need a blanket? Anything warm to wear? I was about to stop by a shop that specializes in things tailored for women and girls, we could find you something too while I shop for my friend." This was fine, this was something Gangleri could latch onto to feel more in control of the situation. And he certainly couldn't let Javira freeze to death, or a young woman who just happened to have her face.

Gangleri was still having trouble not staring, though he tried to make it a more concerned expression than the lost and pained look that his face wanted to make. He'd probably end up drunk in Quil's tavern again for the night, but he didn't want to slink back to the bar empty handed. He at least had to finish his shopping.

If this Mylorah was weyrbred then that definitely proved that she wasn't connected to his late mistress, though he still was having trouble seeing past the resemblance. Gangleri gave her a small bow and offered her his arm. "I can pay, and even if you don't want to accept anything from me you can at least be warm and inside, maybe do me a kindness and help me pick something out. Don't bother arguing, anyone can see you're about to shiver yourself to a coughy and sneezey death out here. I'm a Harper, that means I've got some sort of wisdom and you should heed it. Now let's go."

Mylorah gave Gangleri a bemused look. He didn’t honestly think she had walked from Ista, did he? Or that she needed a blanket or wasn’t dressed properly? Okay, she’d give him part credit on that one but she was only slightly chilled and didn’t need him to buy her more clothes. But he certainly wasn’t letting her say anything in return and she watched the Harper curiously as he continued talking—babbling—and was convinced she was going to drop dead on the spot.

She took his arm, giving it the proper amount of clinging—none—that Tazikel had taught her since she really did like to drape herself on her friends when they looped arms and smiled at the odd man. “You really gave me no choice but to accept but it’s my pleasure to escort you and keep you out of trouble.” She fell in step with him, letting him lead the way since she didn’t know which shop he had in mind or really know the area in general.

“Are you shopping for a special someone?” She asked as they walked, glancing at him and noting that he was fairly handsome. It wouldn’t be hard to believe that he was married and probably had children but Mylorah also couldn’t help but wonder if all of his oddities since grabbing her shoulder was his way of flirting. It did get her attention and company so she couldn’t fault the tactic. “Are we similar in size? I don’t need anything myself, despite your charming worry for me, but I can help you find the right item for her.”

"Keeping me out of trouble?" Gangleri couldn't help but laugh. "Ah but you are far too young to handle the sort of trouble I could get into." He paused a moment, remembering that he was talking to a girl. "Not that you have anything to worry about that, you shouldn't have to trouble yourself with such things. If anything I can make sure no ruffians accost you or some other such nonsense."

Memories of his own recent bit of rule breaking with another far too young woman sprang to mind and he frowned at himself. At least he wasn't planning on doing anything here, then again he hadn't been last time either. Ganglery glanced down at the young woman, other memories haunting him for a brief second. Javira's face, her lips, the looks of ecstasy and bliss he always worked to bring her. He shook his head sharply and tried to refocus.

"Special? Young lady, at my age all of your friends are special and meant to be treasured. But she is just a good friend of mine, and she has a son of her own who is a candidate. I'll be going with her to offer some moral support when he Stands and I thought getting some nice things might be appropriate." He reconsidered her again, this time focusing on comparing her to Quilriana and nodded. "Rather close actually, at least in height. And I'm not charming, just concerned for a young lady's welfare. What brought you to Telgar anyway? I didn't think there was a hatching up at the Weyr here."

He ushered Mylo into the shop and out of the cold, hanging up his own coat by the door and offering to take hers as well. "And you may not need anything but you would probably be more comfortable if you had something more, so let's at least take a look at what's available. You might change your mind."

At his age? Just how old was Gangleri? Or more importantly, how young did he think she was? He spoke like she was barely into her teens, an innocent child. The things she could confess to having done already that could change his mind was probably something she should be embarrassed about but Mylorah never apologised for who she was and he was kind of entertaining and she didn’t want to scare him off yet.

“No Hatching at Telgar at the moment but I have a brother who is a bronzerider here and he insisted on a little shopping excursion. I left him with a book vendor with the intention to get us some hot chocolate but I was then stolen away by a fascinating Harper.” Really, he was amusing and it was kind of refreshing to have such a chatty man around. Sh’ran could match her in constantly talking, especially once they started gossiping, but her brothers and F’drel tended to lean more toward to silence and brooding.

“You mentioned your friend’s son is a Candidate. Is he at Telgar Weyr? Though, we all still sort of travel around to help fill in the numbers. But I might know him.” She tried to know everyone, especially the Candidates that were Searched. Everything was new and overwhelming and a friend was often nice to have.

Mylorah scanned the little shop, taking in the inventory on display and felt out of place. Other than shopping with Tazikel and his sister that first time—he then used her measurements to order anything else since—she had never really been in such a shop. She barely even looked at clothes at Gathers and whatever she owned now came from other people. “For Hatchings, I’d recommend something comfortable. They last hours and you’re just sitting there so you don’t want anything restricting or even too fancy, honestly. A lot of sand can get kicked up.” There was also the chance for a little vomit to get on them, either from themselves or others, when the Hatching got a little messy but Mylorah didn’t think that was necessary information.

"Ah so this is all your brother's fault then. You'd think he would have helped you pick something warmer. And I'm really not all that fascinating. Just a simple Harper out trying to make sure that young ladies don't freeze to death." Gangleri browsed the shop, looking something that would provide efficient warmth. There were a pair of thick, warm looking woolen pants that seemed about the right size, or at least he thought. He peered at Mylorah a moment, circling around her to try to get a better measure of her. "Hm. Maybe these will fit... I'm not sure if they'll work with your dress though. Perhaps just a blouse and sweater?"

Gangleri handed her the pants and started to comb through the displays so that he could try to work on a more complete stylish ensemble for her. "He's at Fort Weyr, a fine young man as far as I know, and I'm willing to believe it considering his mother is a rather fine lady. His name is Quinvalis." He kept piling things into Mylorah's arms, muttering comments about fashion and the latest trends to himself as he did so. It was perhaps a bit odd for him to be so invested in such silly things, but he did enjoy presenting himself in quite a dapper fashion whenever he had work. He may as well put what he knew to work for someone else too.

When Mylorah gave him suggestions for the Hatching he shifted his search for something for Quilriana, looking for a nice comfortable coat that looked durable and easy enough to cleaned. "I think I remember something about the sands being kept hot, is the viewing area similarly warm or is it chilly enough to warrant a good coat? Oh and how do you like the things I picked out for you to try? Have you tried them on? I'm sorry I've been a bit distracted..."

Mylorah rolled her eyes as the constant comments about being young spewed from the harper’s mouth. Honestly, how young did she look to him? It was starting to get annoying—as was his insistence he get her warm clothing. Hadn’t he said she didn’t have to accept anything but just tag along? Her annoyance was briefly set aside when Quinvalis was mentioned and she winced. Yes, she knew her fellow Candidate—everyone did now. He had blended into the mass of those injured at Bedith’s maiden Hatching but his mauling at Aradissicath’s last Hatching made him stand out. She had been so worried and tried to visit him a few times since then but he’d drawn into himself even more now. She tried to bring up how nice he was to Gangleri but the man was off in his own world, sometimes babbling to himself.

She took that chance to ditch the pants he had given her and a few more of the items he kept bringing her before wandering right off again. Was she supposed to try all of that on? Was it for her or Quinvalis’ mom? She continued to put things back that were either ugly or impractical for a Hatching and laughed when Gangleri finally came back to the moment. “Old age affecting your memory and attention span, grandpa?” If he was going to keep viewing her as someone who couldn’t even pick out her own clothing without a brother helping her, then she would start poking at his clearly older age. She didn’t think he was older than forty but she’d start to compare him to the age of the Weyrs if she had to.

“And the viewing area is still in the same Hatching area so it will be hot. I also don’t know if you want me to try these things on for myself or your friend. If it’s for me, I’m not going to bother as I don’t need them. If it’s for Quinvalis’ mom, then I’ll try on a couple of items.” She held up the two dresses that had survived the purging she gave his selections and raised an eyebrow at him, daring him to push her.

"Grandpa? Grandpa! I'd need children of my own to have grandchildren and even then I'm not that old!" Gangleri stroked his beard in a moment of annoyance. Was he that old? If his first child with Kathany had come to term that one would only have just turned fifteen. Entirely possible, he supposed, but not the most likely thing. He shook his head at the thought. "Nevermind, even if I could have been a grandfather my memory is certainly not affected by age. If anything it's much more likely from the wild antics of my youth."

Gangleri studied Mylorah with a frown, noting her rather defiant attitude as she watched him in return. There was something about stubborn women, especially ones who pushed him about, that he found endearing. He enjoyed those sorts of lively personalities much more than the quiet demure maidens that needed more constant assistance. While Gangleri was just as likely to help a maiden in distress, there was just something much more engaging about someone who would fight back and even torment him.

He couldn't help but smile a little. This was the sort of thing he'd have expected from Javira... he did his best to dismiss the thought and smile with a scowl. "Fine, fine! Yes these would be for Quilriana then. Try them on, tell me if they're comfortable and if you'd think they'd suit. Though if you do spot anything you would be interested in for yourself you should at least indulge a disgruntled old but definitely not a grandfather and let me acquire it for you so that I can at least pretend I did something to help keep you warm."

Mylorah smiled triumphantly. It seemed like she had managed to get Gangleri to stop treating her like she was nine instead of her actual twenty and it seemed like it had impressed him to some degree. So it didn't hurt to indulge him further and try on the outfits and possibly even let him buy her something as well.

The little shop surprisingly did have a private area to try items on and Mylorah wondered if it was like the fancy tailors in Tillek that would measure her and custom make a dress if needed. She knew the clothes were of nicer quality than other vendors she had seen--damn Tazikel for corrupting her enough to spot such things--but not at that level. She almost suggested Gangleri take Quinvalis' mom to get a tailored dress but even though she didn't know the woman, Mylorah didn't want to put her through that torture.

The first dress she tried on was nice. If they were of similar size, it would work well on the older woman. Scrambling out of that one and into the next, Mylorah frowned, unsure about it. She had long legs and apparently that meant some dresses were short on her but fine on others. This was one of those times. The length would have been fine for her own use but she wasn't sure about a mom in a Hold. So she went out to ask Gangleri.

"I know you said we were similar in size, but would this one hang right on her? The other one works well if you think this one is inappropriate."

Gangleri was relieved when the young woman finally relented and went to try the dresses on. It wasn't a terribly important thing, he supposed, as much as he fussed he knew she would survive a little bit of a chill and he had no reason to try and purchase her anything really. All of this silly nonsense was because of a simple coincidence that made her look familiar. At least now that he'd had a bit more time to compose himself he was feeling better, a bit more in control of his own emotions.

At least until she stepped out and he found himself staring at her legs, noticing just how long they were as the dress didn't even come down to her knees. "That is hardly appropriate for a lady-" he bit his tongue, shaking his head as he managed to avoid mentioning her age again to try to avoid getting called grandpa again. Instead he went with the next thought he had, "I am pretty sure she would find a way to murder me that I would not find the least bit enjoyable."

He gave the dress another thoughtful look, frowning as he considered the possibility that his favorite barmaid might like that sort of gift. No, even if she did it probably wasn't the sort of gift he should get her unprompted. Maybe he'd just convince her to take a day off so he could bring her to try it on herself. Gangleri sighed, and moved to shoo her back into the private room. "I'll take your word the other one will work well and purchase that one for her. Thank you, for your assistance in this matter."

Once Mylorah was safely out of sight he leaned against the wall next to the door to the changing room. "Did you happen to spot anything here you'd like for yourself? Or should I put myself at your service and help you bring your brother some hot chocolate?" Why was he still doing this? Gangleri frowned at himself, but it was too late to take the words back now.

Mylorah laughed at Gangleri's reaction, knowing he was going to comment on her age again. She wanted to know more about Quinvalis' mom and if she regularly threatened the Harper with murder. Maybe she would visit her fellow Candidate sometime and ask. Maybe she could get A'tay to bring her and Zelana! Her friend had done wonders bringing her brother out of his shell so maybe she could help Quinvalis. She'd run it by Zelly later.

"The hot chocolate plan sounds perfect," she called out in answer after returning to change. Her own clothes were put back on and a few minutes later she emerged carrying both dresses. She gave one to Gangleri and put the other back. She even kept herself out of trouble by tidying up some of the other clothes that had been rifled through as Gangleri paid.

After bundling back up, Mylorah looped their arms and led the way to the hot chocolate. She had only even agreed to his assistance in this because K'dar's reaction to her showing up with a strange older man would be fun.

"Are you sure you don't want anything from here? It's the least I can do for you entertaining an old man." Gangleri had an immediate moment where he realized how that could possibly sound and he gave the merchant a quick glare as he quietly added, "Not like that."

With his gift for Quilriana wrapped up and secured and Mylorah bundled back up for warmth, he took her arm so she could lead them to the hot chocolate. Once they were safely away from the shop he grumbled, "It's a good thing we're going to see your brother because you're starting to make me feel like a dirty old man escorting you about. So, hot chocolates, are we bringing anything else back? Cookies?"

With their orders in hand, Gangleri insisted he carry them, he let her lead the way to her brother. He stopped as soon as he spotted a familiar face though. He leaned down to whisper, "Wait, is your brother Bronzerider K'dar?"

As soon as Mylorah confirmed it he grinned. "Sorry, there's something I have to do, hold these." Once Ganglery had carefully transferred everything to his new, but far too young, friend he took her arm again and waved. "K'dar! How are you! I ran into this beautiful young lady and just had to have her undress for me, I believe you know her?"

It was a good day so far, K'dar was spending some quality time with his sister, they'd had a nice and pleasant ride from Ista, despite the cold the weather was otherwise pleasant enough. He could have taken her somewhere else he supposed, but he knew where more things were here. That and he'd been secretly meaning to stop by and look at the books anyway. Luckily, Mylo seemed fine with that and decided to give him some time to browse while she went to go fetch them some hot chocolate.

K'dar had been quite engrossed in one of the books he'd found to the point that he hadn't really noticed how long his sister had been missing for. He was a few chapters in when he heard his name called out by a familiar voice. He looked up with a smile that was quickly replaced with a very confused frown. What was that Harper doing with his sister?

He was trying to punch the man before he could really think about it, certainly before he could remember that he was very purposefully trying to be better about not butting into his sister's personal life. The older man ducked away from first one fist and then the other, laughing at first but then scolding him about something. Mylo made a startled sound that caught his attention, but that was enough for the older man to wrestle him down into the snow just outside the shop, one arm pinned behind his back. K'dar grunted, letting the snow cool him down a bit as he realized he was starting to get a rather uncomfortable erection. "Hi, Leeri... let me guess... you're just fucking with me aren't you?"

Gangleri knew her brother? Considering how much K'dar was driving her crazy lately with being overprotective and treating her like a kid--it kind of made sense. She smiled when K'dar saw them and raised a brow at the Harper when the teasing started. Sure, now he had no issues seeing her as her proper age. And of course K'dar took the bait far too easily and she sighed when the fist balled up and swung.

And then she was wearing at least one cup of cocoa as Gangleri successfully dodged both punches but seemed to have forgotten they were still linked arm in arm. She let out a gasp of shock more than anything else since her coat and gloves seemed to be the biggest victims of the spill. "Oh, honestly, K'dar! You need to stop with the 'fists first, talking later' thing you have going on. I'm going to start thinking you enjoy fights too much and will use anything to get into one."

Another sigh and Mylorah crouched down before her brother and poured what remained in one cup into the other and set the empty one down in the snow near his face. "That one's yours," she stated, a hint of annoyance on her face, before standing and directing a glare at Gangleri. "And you, sir. I would not at all be surprised if your devious Harper mind concocted this all to happen so you can buy me a damned coat after all." As she took turns casting her annoyed look between them, Mylorah sipped her hot chocolate. Enough survived that she was going to enjoy it, damn it!

Gangleri looked up at Mylorah from where he had a knee digging into K'dar's back. He gave her an apologetic smile, embarrassed that he'd forgotten about the drinks after trying so hard to make sure he wasn't the one holding them. "Ah... sorry about that. And it's not really his fault, I purposefully set him off. He's mentioned having a younger sister before that he was rather fond and protective of so I couldn't help myself. I'll get you more hot chocolate."

His grin became more genuine and mischievous as he added, "And of course I'll have to get you a new coat now. It would only be proper. Though I'm still sorry about the spill. Come on now, K'dar, up you get. Your sister was just helping me shop for a gift, trying things on at the store so that I don't completely botch things. No hard feelings."

At least, he hoped there were no hard feelings. He didn't play cards or anything with the bronzerider, but he did get rides from him often enough in exchange for stories or books. So he decided to throw another bit of book bribery in. "And since I interrupted your reading time, feel free to put a book on my tab."

Gangleri turned back to Mylorah and offered her his arm, "So, back to shopping again to replace your coat? And then I'll get you another hot chocolate that I won't let your brother spill on you."

K'dar stayed in the snow for a moment as he took a few deep breaths, his cheeks still burning in embarrassment. "Sorry, Mylo... I've been trying to be better... Leeri is just an asshole sometimes." His blush deepened a bit at the accusation that he enjoyed fights. "And it's not that, he was just being a jerk... thought he was making fun of you or something."

Which wasn't the truth at all, but he wasn't about to admit that. At least when the Harper got off of him he found it easier to relax and focus on not being aroused by the situation. After just a few more breaths he pushed himself up, frowning at the empty cup that Mylo had left him. He shot Gangleri a glare but muttered, "Yeah... I deserve this."

He brushed himself off as he turned to the two of them, wondering if he should tag along to make sure the Harper didn't try to get up to anything nefarious. But then he was offered a free book and K'dar was immediately torn. He glanced from Leeri to Mylo and back again before turning to his sister. "Ah... did you want me to go with you? I could help you pick out a jacket too... or if it's too crowded in the shop I can just stay here and find another book since he's going to be getting me one... but it's up to you. Your hang out day."

Mylorah was still glaring daggers at both men as they finally got back to their own feet. They were both being obnoxious and while she could handle their antics, she was also done with them. Gangleri was making her twitch every time he called her young—even if she was younger than K’dar, she had a feeling the Harper didn’t know or believe it was only by a year—and K’dar would just drive her batty with his current mode of apologising after being a brutish idiot. Another long drink of cocoa was taken as she considered what to do with them and what the path to the smallest headache would be.

“Neither,” she finally replied, done with the Hold and everything it held for the day. “You’re taking me back to your weyr so I can wash my coat and gloves before we go down to the dining cavern for something to eat. You’re also not getting a book out of the Harper because he didn’t do anything wrong. Anyone else would have seen it for the joke it was or at least not react with a flying fist.” She was not going to let her brother be rewarded for his behaviour. Gangleri wasn’t entirely innocent but what he said wasn’t any different than what one of their friends would have said in a similar situation. Mylorah had to believe K’dar still had enough brain cells left to know the same words would have been said in jest if it came from R’dare or B’kit.

“And as for you, Harper Gangleri,” her attention snapped to the older man. He was interesting but probably also a bit of a handful if they spent too long of a time together. It would likely be fun and maybe one day Mylorah would find out but it wasn’t that day. “I thank you yet again for the offer to buy me something but this will wash out. You have a dress to bring to your friend and I would feel guilty if I took up more of your time.”

Gangleri couldn't help but chuckle as he watched the bronzerider receive his berating with hastily mumbled apologies, looking simultaneously crestfallen and shocked that the book he'd just been offered was being taken away. He'd just give the young man an extra book next time he needed a ride. "Oh don't be too hard on him. I'm sure he'll get over the fighting with time. Most men do. Though I suppose he is your brother, so you handle him however you think is best."

He gave her another appraising eye, a part of him finding some sort of relief that if there was another woman who had to share Javira's face, at least she could be just as commanding. Without thinking he took her hand, leaning down to give the back of her gloved knuckles a brush of his lips. "It was good to see you," he said as he straightened, though he quickly cleared his throat and corrected himself. "A pleasure to meet you. I hope you have a pleasant evening, enjoy your dinner, and if you change your mind about the coat your brother can probably figure out where I am."

Before he could get into any more trouble he turned to K'dar, giving the man a slap on the back that was perhaps a bit harder than necessary as he bid the bronzerider farewell. Then, with package in hand, he made his way towards the bar. He had a feeling he was going to want a lot to drink.
