Zahrah was milling among the stalls, looking for something to bring home to her daughter as well as cloth and furs for a new warm coat. It meant buttons and fasteners, too, so she was rather busy picking that out for a while. When it grew later, she sat by a fire to watch the whirling and listen to the music the Harpers and others were playing.

She wore a long tunic that reached her ankles and flared out like a dress. It was done with little beads at the hem that made a soft tinkling sound as she moved and was rather fetching, cut to flatter her modest breasts and waistline. There was a slit to the hip on each side and she wore a pair of trousers in the same colour. She figured if she was going to ride a dragon over, she was going to do it easily and without fuss.

It may have gathered her impolite looks but a girl had to find a way to be comfortable, right? Her hair was braided up and away from her face, as it was proper, and she wore fetching green peridot earrings that hung to mid neck. It balanced out the brown of the tunic, multi buckled boots, and leggings. The sash she wore was the same colour as her earrings, giving her one more piece to pull the outfit together. All in all, she had done a really good job. Her daughter had helped by handing her the beading, which was sweet of her.

As her foot tapped in time with the music, she smiled and reached out to touch someone's elbow. It was polite and she grinned a little cheekily.

"You wouldn't mind a dance, would you?" she asked. "It's been ages since I last had a proper one."

It really had been, if she was being honest. Ista had its own kinds of dancing but she'd always been too busy doing something somewhere to join in. Getting to go to Gather was a rare treat for her, that was for sure. Maybe more so now that she'd completed her move to Benden and Zarel had gotten used to the new environment - and the cleaning. More and more of the chores had been aiding with Weyr clean up and having the breakaway was really lovely. She would have taken Zarel but right now, the creche had her and she'd wanted to surprise he daughter with something pretty. A surprise was not a surprise if someone knew about it, that was for sure. The little firelizard gemstone bracelet she found would have to do. Her purchases were safely stowed away now and not in the reach of any thieving, or at least one could hope that was the case.

In light of things, a dance would make things a little better for the night. She might be able to get away with an ale. Just a little, that couldn't hurt. She had until curfew to be back, after all.

Colors and textures swirled around him, the sounds of laughter mingling with the music as the harpers finished the piece. The gather-goers applauded the group and started to disperse, and Alekse made his way closer to the edge of the dance floor. He hoped to find Aederyn close by and he looked forward to surprising his little sister, but the gather would stretch for a bit and there was no rush. He wanted to hear all about the Weyr and how her life was changing now that she was a Candidate! He was glad to see her happy. Looking to the tops of the booths, he checked to see if his brown Handsome boy had found his clutchmate, and saw the firelizard perched solo atop a flagpole, ever the dignified thing. No, Aederyn and Rudi weren’t here yet, otherwise the two firelizards would undoubtedly be gallivanting about the grounds.

He drained the last of his wine before setting the glass on a table, enjoying the smoothness and slight bite the liquid offered, along with the bittersweet aftertaste. The wine, while not the best he’d tasted, was far from the worst. And who was he to turn down such a lovely beverage? He picked up a stray napkin to dust his hands, not wanting to muss his gather clothes too much, though not a lot would show up on the rich reddish brown tunic or dark trousers.

A gather was a truly rare occasion for him, and he intended to savor it. He thought briefly on how out of the loop he’d been lately, with spending so much time out on the traces or sketching maps it seemed like he’d missed most of the summer. Shaking his head, he resolved to not let that happen again. He took the experience philosophically, though. While the long days and warm summer evenings might be gone, autumn and winter would offer warm fireplaces and hot cups of klah or mulled wine, and long starry nights with which to enjoy the beverages.

The harpers struck up an upbeat but not raucous tune, and Alekse tapped his foot along to the beat. He was familiar with the song and the dance that went with it. He’d taught it to Aederyn several turns back, and took great joy in the intricate steps and tight spins. A hand at his elbow caused him to turn, and he found himself starting into the stunning blue eyes of a beautiful woman. He grinned, looking down at the slim figure in what could be considered a plain dress, but had been delicately embellished with tinkling beads and a sash that matched her sparkling jewelry, giving her a subtle beauty that only enhanced her attractiveness.

“It would be my absolute pleasure.” He bowed and offered his elbow, leading them to a place toward the center of the floor.

"Excellent," she replied, grinning. Oh, she knew the dance, too, thank Faranth, or she'd look a right fool for her trouble. "I'm Zahrah. Still Standing - Benden Weyr, now. I wanted a cooler Weyr after Ista."

She was never sure if they'd take her, the glass crafters since she was older but maybe it was something she could fall back on if a dragon didn't pick her. Faranth forbid.

Zahrah moved through the steps easily, clearly having fun, and the chiming of the beads when she moved was rather charming. There was something lovely about it and the music and the easy, smooth, gliding motions of the dance that shook off the last of her nerves and had her laughing at the whirl of a turn.

"Nice to meet you!" She meant it sincerely. Good dancers were difficult to find after all. Especially at a Gather where getting drunk and fumbling around the dance floor was the norm. This was nice, easy, and she was very much enjoying herself. She pushed a coil of hair back as she stepped close again.

“Lovely to meet you, Zahrah,” he rolled the name around on his tongue. It flowed well, easy and mellow. He brightened at the mention of Standing, perhaps she had met Aederyn—but no, different Weyr. He nodded between steps and patterns at the mention of Ista’s weather. He’d been there briefly a turn or two back to help map the roads across the island, and if the weather was as warm as it had been then all turn-round he could understand wanting a change in scenery and climate. “I’ve not spent very much time up at Benden. The area is very pretty this time of year, though. I hope to visit more often, and hopefully I can…with the area seeing more growth recently I would assume message runners might be needed more often.”

Between steps and turns, he introduced himself. “I’m Alekse, Journeyman Runner, and unofficial mapmaker, based out of a station not far from here.” He led her through a series of fast and tight spins, delighted by her laugh and glad she was having a good time. She was small and light on her feet, and he risked a small lift, allowing her to stay suspended for a moment mid-air before placing her back on her feet and continuing with the pattern, and was pleasantly surprised when she took to the variation easily.

The song ended and he stood facing her, an arm still firmly encircling her back, watching as she brushed a wayward strand of hair from her face and stepped in closer. “You, miss Zahrah, are a beautiful dancer.” He flashed a cheeky grin, his eyes twinkling at this rare discovery. Their turn around the floor had taken them toward a corner where a few fellow gatherers stood around some tables, and his grin grew when he saw how the small group of bystanders had taken notice of the two of them. “And it seems I’m not the only one who’s noticed.”

The music started up again, and he raised his eyebrows in question. While he would be more than happy to keep dancing, he wouldn’t be opposed to spending time talking with such a delightful person over a refreshing drink or some food. With no preference one way of the other, he left the choice up to his new dance partner. “What brings a Benden Candidate to a Fort gather?”

"Benden is rather lovely and continues to surprise me as we explore and tidy up." She nodded, her smile merry as could be. "It's a pleasure to meet you Alekse, Journeyman Runner. Ahh, perhaps I'll be seeing you at Benden, then. You're right about the growth and Benden Hold isn't far as well. With the Weyr developing this quickly, people wanting a change are in for a delight. Besides, the Vinters aren't far away either and that makes for good wine and ale made locally. When it opened up, Zarel, my daughter, wanted nothing but to go to Benden. She's ten turns on her and thinks the world of the new quarters. I think Dannel, her father, is still Standing at Ista, but we've lost touch over the turns."

They swirled and dipped and she was very light on her feet, easily moving through steps as she trusted his lead. When he stepped closer, she flushed a little but turned a wee curtsy, laughing.

"Thank you, Alekse, your lead was wonderful." She glanced to the group of people and laughed softly. "Let them notice. They can be jealous all they want. Oh, that felt good but it's thirsty work."

As the music dipped into another set, she met his eyes with a wink and a step towards the tables, leaving a hand in his. It wasn't like they couldn't dance more after an ale or two. There was nothing that satisfied her most after a wonderful dance than quenching her thirst and talking while she took a breather or two. Besides, a great deal could be talked about at a table that other mightn't hear.

"This Benden candidate comes for furs and trinket for my daughter. How could I miss a Gather anywhere? I don't think Zarel would forgive me for it." Just the look she'd get was enough. Zarel was intelligent enough to know Gathers mean her mother would go to trade or exchange marks for lovely little things. But Zahrah getting warmer blankets was the real haul, here, even if the bracelet was darling.

"I shall have to come by, then, if nothing else, to take in the scenery and tour the wineries.” He made a slight mental note of Dannel, mildly relieved that it sounded like they weren’t currently in a relationship and he could flirt guilt-free, but aware enough to realize that flirtation might not be welcomed.

“Indeed it is,” he nodded, pursing his lips together with mock seriousness. After the set started anew, he escorted her toward one of the tables, pleased that she kept hold of his hand, and squeezed it slightly before finally letting go in order to pull a chair out for her. He seated himself, offering a polite wave to get the attention of a booth attendant who was milling about offering his wares, in this case, drinks.

“She sounds like a treasure.” A smile touched his lips as he watched her talk of her daughter. It was clear she cared very much for her, and she seemed to almost glow with it. “And, ah, how goes the search?” He slipped the appropriate marks onto the tray and watched her pick her drink, choosing to follow her lead and taking a similar mug.

“I’m just glad to be in the right place at the right time.” He let his eyes hold hers for just a moment longer before he brought his drink to his lips. “It isn’t often my Craft puts me in the same place as a Gather at the end of a run. I’ve run through several, but this is the first time in probably a full turn I’ve not had somewhere else to be during one.” He smiled behind his cup, taking in the grounds, the booths, the people, before finding his way back to her. “And if I get the chance to enjoy the food, music, wares…and conversation of a lovely woman…I fully plan to do so.”

The dance floor filled quickly as the harpers struck up a medium paced song with steps that were easy and light, and he watched the people for a moment before turning back to Zahrah. “Would you care to browse the booths’ offerings? I’m on the hunt for a little something for my sister. She’s a relatively new Candidate at Fort, and I want to get her a little something to help keep warm during the colder months since she won’t be running anymore to do so.”

"Mm, you really should," she said quietly, a soft smile lighting her face up. "They have some of the best vines on Pern."

Zahrah sat neatly, ankles locked and her knees slightly swept to the side, her arms leaning against the table, thinking of her daughter's expression when she saw the little gift. Her dark hair curling and a little wild from play, her shining eyes, the way she'd tell the day like it was a secret thing between the two of them.

"She's a brilliant little thing," Zahrah said, her voice gentle. "I got her a bracelet with a flight firelizards on it. Zarel is mad for them. Ours, well, mine, Shard, is at home keeping an eye on her but she's in creche, so he's not the only one. I told her to wait until she's a Candidate, then she could get an egg. She wants to Impress so badly if she could right now, she would."

She nodded, unable not to smile.

"As am I, I could have stayed at Benden." Zahrah was pleased at the chance meeting, one never knew where the evening might find them, after all. Luckily, she seemed to have picked a good one. She held his eyes, too, before looking out at the Gather booths and tents beyond before nodding.

"I wouldn't mind looking a little more. I've been wanting something to ward off the chill, myself. Bed furs are one thing, it's quite another to be in the Candidates' Dorm on a chilly morning in nothing but a daydress. It's certainly not Telgar but it's close enough after Ista."

“Ooh, that doesn’t sound the least bit pleasant.” He stood and shook off the chill the thought gave him, also shaking away the image that came to his mind unbidden of Zahrah in a flimsy dress, and doing his best to hide the twinkle in his eye. He knew it was impolite to dwell on the idea, but allowed himself to enjoy the lovely image, nonetheless. “Let’s see what we can find, shall we?”

He offered his elbow as they meandered through the stalls, stopping before a promising looking booth with an assortment of thick furs, blankets, robes, and coats. “I’ll be sure to keep my eyes and ears open for news of a clutch and let you know if I find anything.” He nodded to add affirmation to his words. “She’s got a few more turns before she’s able to Stand, right? A clutch should be found by then…” He knew it would be a while, as girls were generally well into their teens before Candidacy, but hoped she would find the thought endearing, if a bit silly. And he did mean it...he’d pass on any news he heard of eggs for sale or trade.

A swath of fabric in a pale seafoam green caught his attention and he picked it up, admiring the weight of it. The robe was long; he judged would fall about to his sister’s ankles. Simple and unembellished, she would find it…adequate. He nodded, satisfied. She wasn’t fond of anything fancy. He chuckled and shook his head. “It would be just like her to want something so very simple.”

He took in the woman next to him once more, eyebrows furrowed in contemplation, before picking up a cloak in a deep indigo that contrasted beautifully with Zahrah’s eyes. It would fall to about her hips, and it too, was mostly simple. Delicate embroidery adorned the toggles, and the hem sparkled with something dainty and shiny, similar to the dress-tunic she wore now. The thick woolen-type fabric would keep the chill out well, too. “What about this?” He opened the cloak in invitation, waiting to see what Zahrah thought.

"Oh," Zahrah said, "that's wonderful, simple but rather elegant and it would do for the morning chill nicely with that fabric. You've a good eye." She took the invitation and let the fabric settle over her shoulders. A good weight. Atop a shift it would work quite well and especially in a daydress of cotton. She kept in mind that she wouldn't be sitting around all the time but in the night or very early morning, it would be perfect.

It was very comfortable as well, which was always a plus. She was sold. Using a bit of her carefully counted marks stash, she paid for it and kept it on. It was cooling, after all.

"One of these stalls is mine," she said, her cheeks lighting up a little more pink. "I just closed up for food and a bit of a dance. Would you like to see my little hobby? I'm not Crafthall trained but the glass and bronze candle lamps have been near sold-out since midday and my little clay dragons have faired quite well. I make them in my free-hours when I can."

Her eyes were bright with pride as she took his are with a laugh.

"My mother taught me glasscraft when we were at Katila," she explained, gesturing delicately with her free hand.

He glowed just a bit under her praise, glad she was as pleased with his find as he had been to find it. Smoothing the fabric over her shoulders, he let himself linger for a moment longer than was strictly necessary, enjoying her nearness and only mildly disappointed when she stepped away to pay.

Pressing his own marks into the vendor’s hand for the green robe, Alekse draped his sister’s new robe over one arm, he free his hand tentatively taking hers, and walked along beside her as she guided him toward one of the booths.

His eyebrows shot up and a big, silly smile spread over his face when she said one of the booths belonged to her. Women in Crafts were rare, and, as being around Aederyn had shown him, sadly often dismissed and under appreciated. His eyes danced with anticipation, and he offered her hand an encouraging squeeze when he noticed her blushing. “That’s brilliant! I’d love to see!” The two picked up their pace a bit as she led to her booth, and he let out a low whistle upon seeing her works.

So much beauty in one little space! The afternoon light glinted off of fragile sculptures and several multicolored glass-shard lamps, sending colors dancing and sparkling in all directions. Tiny dragon figures stared at him from the table, looking for all of Pern like they might take flight on their delicate little wings. “You made these.” It was a statement, not a question, because he knew without a doubt that she was more than capable of it. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite so beautiful.” He shrugged. “Well…” he leaned into her and nudged her slightly, giving her a pointed once-over. “Truly though, this work is stunning.”

Handsome took that moment to leave his perch overlooking the gather grounds, flitting down to the table and staring suspiciously at one of the clay figures, a confused warble emanating from his throat. Alekse shoo’d him lightly away, offering his arm instead, and the creature took it, creeping up to his shoulder and chirping at Zahrah in question. “What do you think, boy?” The firelizard cocked his head at the woman before offering a light, trilling whistle. “That’s what I thought. Same. Off with you now. Go find find Rudi.” With a wave, he dismissed the creature, and Handsome launched himself skyward before disappearing between. Alekse turned back to Zahrah. “He likes you.”

She didn't miss the lingering of his hands and almost hesitated when she moved to pay but her hand curled lightly in his as they walked and there was no shyness to the gesture. It had been ages since she'd been this comfortable. His expression when he saw her work made her smile proudly. They were rather nifty things. Useful, too. Some of the little statues had places for glows or small candles that fit into holders.

"Mm," she said softly. "I draw them first if I can get a hold of proper sketching material. Scraping hides is sometimes annoying but it works for when I have ideas. Or sometimes I just sculpt clay and then out comes a dragon. I lose time when I work on the sculptures and I do try to make them useful. I'm so glad you like them. The lamps really are lovely indoors hanging from hooks and really liven up an interior. I use old chips no one wants or can figure out what to do with. Bits of brass that are someone's leftovers."

He bumped into her and she laughed softly, flushing a little more. She had spent so much time with clay sometimes it had a mind of its own in her hands. Even her daughter had taken to fetching her things to eat when she was absorbed.

"Met with approval, have I?" Her eyes fairly danced in the afternoon light. "Well, thank goodness for that. I quite like him, too." It was a soft murmur as she glanced the distance up at Alekse. She pulled her newly acquired robe a little more around her shoulders as the wind stirred, a gush tugging at her as she shivered a little.

There was something about this woman that was more than just her being pretty. She was as multifaceted as one of the lamps she’d made. He found himself wanting to learn about each beautiful little piece. Were they discarded scraps or leftovers that she’d made into something unique and special?

The other girls he’d known came briefly to mind, and he dismissed them just as quickly. None had made him want to know more. They’d been much younger, and so had he. Maybe it was time to put an end to the casual flings…

He made a mental note of the things she did and said she used, thinking of potential practical things he might be able to gift to her. Sketching supplies…maybe a slate and chalk so she could reuse it? He logged the thought away for future consultation. “I may have to commission you whenever I get my own Runner Station. I’d love to have some of these pieces. They’re incredible.”

The note to her voice didn’t go unnoticed, and Alekse smiled down at her. A light breeze swept through the booths, sending flags and tent flaps rustling, and when Zahrah started to shiver he pulled her close. The flush to her cheeks stood out that much more in the chill autumn breeze, and he found himself staring, lost in those icy blue eyes. Without a second thought, he closed the gap between them, bringing his lips to hers, capturing her in a kiss.

She leaned into his warmth immediately and then up into the kiss. There was an instant somewhere in the heady rush that said this was where they'd been headed for all along, the instant she touched him. Things were like that, sometimes.

Good things.

Her fingers curled at the nape of his neck as she shifted her weight to the balls of her feet and kissed him properly. It wasn't a hungry kiss, it was slow and measured, like she was tasting fine wine. When they broke for air, she stared up at him for a moment and then kissed him again, softly, gently, almost delicately, pulling him down a little more to whisper against his ear.

"If we're negotiating a future commission," she murmured, her voice low, "I'm upping the price for more of those."

As pleased at her returning the kiss and eager as he was for more, he held back somewhat, not out of any kind of second thoughts or regret, but because he knew, somehow, that there would be more time and more opportunities to taste what she had to offer.

Taking the moment to allow her the freedom to explore at her own pace, he reveled in the sensation, lips parted to allow her access if she chose and gently prodding for her to do the same. The break for air came because it was needed more than wanted, and when she pulled him down to meet her in a second, sweet and delicate kiss he had a hard time breaking away.

“Mmmm...” his voice took on a husky, gravelly quality as he smiled against her neck. “You drive a hard bargain...” he paused to plant a kiss below her ear. “But I think that can be arranged.”

Slipping his arm beneath her cloak, he held her to him, taking her other hand from where it rested at his neck and holding it between them against his chest, slowly starting to sway and rock to the lazy tune that could just barely be heard over the sounds of the Gather.

He peppered their dance with several more faint kisses to her temple and hair, closing his eyes and only occasionally opening them to make sure he didn’t run them into anything. When the last notes of the song dissipated, he sought her gaze again. “Have we reached an agreement? Or shall I find some bubbly pies to sweeten the deal? I don’t want to keep you from your business—well, I sort-of do…”

She was comfortable tucked against him, dancing with slow, meandering steps, her forehead bowed a little as she enjoyed the close contact. The little kisses were lovely and she realized she was humming along with the music as the last strains fell away.

"Stall closed," she murmured,"I think I've sold enough for one day.” Her smile was radiant as she caught his eyes. Zahrah was determined to enjoy this for however it lasted. It wasn't something commonplace, after all. And she didn't just leap into kisses, either.

This was something else, shocking as it might seem. But Gather was a place where these sorts of things might happen. A coming together, new beginnings, a chance to celebrate what they had and trade, barter, or buy. Her fingers drifted across his knuckles lightly.

"I do still need furs and blankets."

He nodded slightly, nothing more than a slight dip of his chin, and deposited his sister’s robe under one of the tables at Zahrah’s booth. He would come back later for it, and didn’t want anything hindering him if he wanted to wrap both arms around this woman, should the opportunity arise…

He ushered her back into the rows of booths, drawn toward the less crowded stalls at the outskirts of the grounds. They passed a baker’s booth and he bartered for some of the sweets, exchanging the promise of delivering a private message pack within a week for several bubbly pies. He knew the baker, too, so his word went a little farther and garnered an extra pie to share. Thanking him, Alekse promised to be back the next day for the message and turned back to Zahrah as they continued to walk, perusing the booths’ offerings as they went.

“Katila?” He asked, offering her one of the small treats. “I’ve been all over northern Pern, but I’ve never been South. What was it like there?” He watched her with keen interest, hungry and eager to learn. Tales of smoking mountains, sparkling beaches, and wild, unruly plant life flitted through his memory, but they were all either vague or exaggerated, or so he assumed. All were also heard at least third-hand, and thus not to be taken at face value as far as accuracy was concerned.

Time spent South was also another shining facet of Zahrah that he wanted to examine closer.

Hands now otherwise occupied with the pie, he settled for simply walking next to her. Though he didn’t step away when they happened to brush.

"My father died there," she said quietly. "My mother might have well done so but I think she is slowly recovering from his loss. He was a bluerider. He just went between and never came out." The words made her want to disappear into her little cape.

"My mother is at Ista, now, with the glass crafters. Katila? Ah, Katila was a jungle, hot, sweaty, massive felines, humid." She half-waved a little. "It's safe enough now, I suppose, but I'd never go back. There's too much loss there for me."

Zahrah turned a smile to him, though it was a sad one trying to be positive.

"Benden seems better than Ista. Fresh, new start. New faces. Zarel loves the Harper lessons and the creche. It's," she shrugged, "away and it feels right. Ista never felt like home to me. Just a stop on a longer journey. I know that must sound ridiculous but I feel like I'm more alive there than anywhere I've ever been."

Zahrah did a little slow spin and laughed, a low, throaty sound. She'd certainly not hand anyone to talk to about this before as she'd kept herself to herself at Ista. Her mother had needed her badly but now practicing her craft at the craft hall - not that she'd make it anywhere beyond senior apprentice - she seemed better, stronger. It gave her purpose.

"I think I may only stand for Benden clutches," she said thoughtfully. "It's where I'd rather stay. But I suppose I could always transfer after graduation, I mean, if I Impress."

Hearing the sadness in her voice felt like a rock had dropped into the pit of his stomach. His brows knit together and his eyes searched her face. She couldn’t be too far off from his own age, yet she’d already been through so much. She really had remade herself with her own broken pieces. To be so strong… By the sound of it, too, she was still a work in progress. But then again, weren’t they all?

His feet froze in their tracks and he just stared at her as she turned in a lazy circle. Shaking his head in admiration, Alekse reflected briefly on his own life, which seemed downright cushy by comparison. He honestly couldn’t say how he would have fared in similar circumstances. “Thank you.” He murmured, barely above a whisper. “Thank you for sharing that with me.”

She’d gotten a bit ahead of him, and smiling, he lengthened his next several strides to catch up. “And you’re talking to a Runner…small steps on a longer journey are all I know. I have no idea when I’ll finally reach my final stop, or where that will be.” He shrugged nonchalantly, the faintest quirk of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “But Benden seems to be calling out to me…”

At the mention of dragons and her hoping to Impress, he studied her once more, taking a calculated risk with his next words, knowing that some viewed dragon color as a measure of prestige, somehow. “You’ll take a green, for sure.” He nodded. “Fighters, like you. Quick, adaptable, determined.” He watched her expression carefully, hoping she would see it as the compliment he’d intended.

"Mm," she half shook her head. "A green would be fine or even a blue. A dragon is a dragon. I've been on the Sands before at Ista and Katila but-- My father would have been proud of me no matter what I Impressed. I am...all those things, I think. I'm a fighter and when Thread comes and we have to meet it, I'll do it on the back of whatever dragon chooses me."

He understood.

He really did.

"I've never felt at home before," Zahrah said in a soft voice, a smile curling at her lips as she stepped closer. Her fingertips brushed his cheek very gently.

"I wouldn't, at all, mind more time in your company. Heed the call, Alekse, you never know where it might take you."

By the golden eggshell of Faranth herself...why did they have to be at such a very public Gather?! Resisting the urge to roll his eyes at this sudden inconvenience, he chuckled instead at how absolutely remarkable the whole chance encounter was.

Her touch sent an involuntary shiver through him, and he smiled with the pleasure of it, choosing to drink in what he could have in that moment instead of dwelling on what he couldn’t. “Hmmm..” Rolling his head back on his shoulders, he took it as an invitation. He pulled her against him until there was no space between the two, letting his hands wander from her back down to her hips, fingertips lightly brushing the small of her back.

“Can’t say as I’ve felt at home much anywhere, myself, traveling as much as I do...and Runner Stations aren’t always the most homey of places.” The idea of one of her delightful lamps throwing little colored points of light across an interior brightened his smile a bit. “And pardon me for my boldness in saying this—after all, we have only just met...but you’re beginning to feel a lot like home.” He held her gaze for long moment before leaning down and pressing first one, then another gentle kiss to her jawline before making his way to her lips once more. Hungry, insistent, but still reserved, given the setting he was far too aware of, he held her for as long as she’d let him.

"Home," she murmured with a soft sigh, leaning into him with a smile and acutely aware of his hands which felt entirely too good on her.

"Home is where you make it," Zahrah said, her voice soft between kisses that she returned in kind. "And sometimes where you least expect to find it." He was right, he was starting to feel like home, too, and it was a little bit mad the way they just clicked.

"I didn't expect any of this but I'm awfully glad I reached out when I did." She laughed softly against his lips. "It's ridiculous to say but I feel as if we've known each other for a long time already. You just..."

She trailed off helplessly, trying to find the right words and failing terribly. Sometimes you just felt right with someone. Her eyes searched his face and she kissed him again. Her lips moved against his lazily as she spoke.

"...what on Pern am I to do with you? Steal you away to Benden?"

He ceased his kissing of her to consider her question. “I think I can arrange for that.” He smiled down at her, a raised eyebrow teasing. “There’s a station master in the Benden Hold area that I’ve heard is looking to retire soon. I can see if I can train there for my Mastery. Maybe take over the running of it when I gain rank.”

He pulled away and turned, lacing his fingers with her as they started back toward the music and the dance floor. “But only…” He chewed at his lip, unsure how he wanted to phrase his thoughts. “…only if this isn’t just a Gather one-off. I’ve already grown to like you too much to just let this go.” He watched her from the corner of his eye as they walked, a small smirk hiding the nervousness he suddenly felt.

At any other time in his life, this would have been a lovely day spent with a lovely girl, more or less, then back to life as usual by the next day. But now…this was new and exciting territory he was eager to explore. More risk for something even more beautiful. They rounded a corner and the dance floor waited ahead of them. He turned to face her, eyebrows raised. “So…?”

"I don't just kiss random men for the thrill of it," Zahrah teased and then her tone grew serious, her hand against his chest.

She tilted her chin slightly, looking up at him for a long while before she bit her bottom lip in thought. Zahrah had little interest in men and there'd been nothing casual in ages but whatever this was, it wasn't casual. She really, really liked Alekse and even if she couldn't figure out why, even if it seemed so out of the blue that it had to be mad, the attraction was undeniable. She was irresistibly drawn to the man and she didn't feel like letting go.

"You're the first in ten turns, so yes, this is more than an evening's entertainment. So, yes. Take the position, Runner Alekse, meet my daughter, maybe my mother...if you like."

Alekse pretended to consider the thought deeply, but his smirk gave away his game. He turned toward the dance floor, the song having ended and the people dispersing before the set started again.

For the first time in a long while, since his early stolen kisses as a youth and daydreaming of the first thing to flutter her eyelashes at him, he was thinking past those kisses and embraces. The next kiss or touch wasn’t his sole goal. A single night wasn’t the end of the story. Or at least, he hoped it wouldn’t be. With a bit of surprise it clicked that all they had done was kiss, talk, and enjoy each other’s nearness. More would have been pleasant, sure. But, should things in the future go as swimmingly as they were now, there would be time yet for that. And perhaps the waiting would make it more worthwhile.

The harpers struck up another song. This one wasn’t familiar, though he liked the tune. He was a decent lead and she was a good follow. They partnered each other well. They could figure it out.

“Going east? Taking on a new position? Meeting your family?” He squinted at nothing in particular, as though weighing his options before he couldn’t hide anymore and his face lit up in one of his wide grins. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” he offered her an elbow to lead her to the floor. There would be time for packing and shopping and all of that later. For now…

“It would be my absolute pleasure.”
