The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Madiquel felt like the Weyrlingmaster, and about five hundred assistants had spent about ten hours prepping herself and the boys for their first major trip between to Benden. It was like they hadn’t been teaching them how to do the fancy trick for the past week. Not that Madiquel didn’t understand, she did, honest, but that didn’t stop the frustration when it took until noon for them to be able to actually arrive at Benden Weyr. Noon! Madiquel puffed out an irritated breath as she came out of the bedroom she was borrowing for the next several days, delicately dressed in a gown Rhaedalyn had sent to her, a gift for Impressing to Zezeth. Madiquel adored it. The fact that Rhaedalyn had gotten D’hys to deliver it had had Madiquel blushing and stuttering for hours.

Brushing her hands over her stomach, Madiquel flattened the lacey gauze of her skirts, feeling them flutter around her shins as she moved. She felt spectacularly pretty, her hair pulled up in an elaborate pile that she’d spent weeks practicing, with a few curls falling loose around her face and neck. Madiquel had speckled her hair with seasonal flowers, the scent a delicate perfume that swirled gently around her like her skirt as she walked. The lacey gown was made of the palest of blues, with a semi-corset bodice that had made Madiquel blush when she realised how much it emphasised her bust; though she wasn’t sure if it was because her breasts were so small compared to other girls, or because they existed at all. Ugh.

The shoulders were her favourite bit, though; they were delicately made with wonderful needlepoint work, the shapes of flowers, butterflies, and leaves – all in delicate shades of blue, white and a soft pink and green. If ever the gorgeous gown became obsolete, Madiquel had already decided she’d be getting the embroidery used on another gown, or something. Leaning over carefully, Madiquel tugged her delicate, matching slippers onto her feet, and wriggled her toes within their confines before smiling to herself and slipping out of the room. Time to find some friends, and dance!

Madiquel knew that A’tay was somewhere within the Weyr or Hold, and while she was definitely going to find her friend, her first mission was to find Rhaedalyn and show off the gorgeous gown to the goldrider. Climbing carefully onto Zezeth, the pair glided low over the road between Weyr and Hold, and Zezeth landed, letting Madiquel slide off in a cloud of skirts before trotting off to find her own friends, the quiet dragon trilling a greeting before settling down to listen in on the conversations between others, enjoying the socialising without the need to speak herself.

A higher pitched chirp greeted Madiquel, and she looked up to see Clover, the little firelizard twirling in the air before leading Madiquel through the stalls and people. It didn’t take long for the young greenrider to spot Rhaedalyn, and her squeal of delight started several people around them. Madiquel was oblivious as she burst into a run, and threw herself onto the woman, wrapping her arms around Rhaedalyn’s waist and hugging her tight. “Rhaedalyn!” Peering around Rhaedalyn, Madiquel smiled sheepishly at R’nya who gave her a small smile, before hugging Rhaedalyn again and stepping back. “Thank you so much!” She twirled, clasping her hands under her chin as she came to a stop facing her friend.

Rhaedalyn loved Gathers. As a girl, she enjoyed them for the dancing and trying new foods and seeing what the tailors and weavers created. As she got older, she started to lose that love, knowing she was an undesirable that no one would marry and she felt like everyone knew it as if she wore a sign. She wasn’t great at cooking and her stitches were messy and Gathers started to show how horrible she was at everything compared to others. That had changed once again in recent years thanks to her time in Katila, discovering who she really was and what she was capable of. R’nya taking her on as his Weyrwoman also continued to push her confidence and now she was able to walk around a Gather relaxed and able to enjoy herself once more.

That’s what she was doing now as they had decided they needed and deserved the break after the months of helping to ready Benden Weyr and being sandbound for some of it. Rhaedalyn merrily worked her way through the stands with R’nya at her side and their daughters back at Fort. They were in the crèche where she sometimes liked to keep them to help them socialize with other kids but that day was also so Quinvalis and Aederyn could have some free time as well. Aederyn had been such a gift when D’hys mentioned her circumstances and he wanted to get around the Healer Hall rule. That had been curious but he didn’t seem to show any interest in her romantically—though Rhaedalyn confessed he was kind of hard to read to begin with—but she jumped on finding a way to keep the young woman in the Weyr and thought about an extra set of hands with the girls from time to time. It was working out wonderfully and it was nice to see Quinvalis have someone else to talk to again.

A squeal of delight had Whisper taking off from her shoulder as Rhaedalyn turned around to see Madiquel flying at her. She laughed as the girl wrapped her up in a hug that was returned with equal amounts of enthusiasm. Madiquel was partly to thank for Aederyn’s new job since the young greenrider had accidentally Impressed during her healing studies. She knew a dragon hadn’t been in Madiquel’s grand plan but it was so good to see her smiling and happy.

“You’re so very welcome!” It was a late gift but she had been busy and there was also the threat that Zezeth wouldn’t live long given her rough start at life. Rhaedalyn hadn’t wanted to send anything too soon only to find out the dragon had perished or would be too sickly for her life to fly. It wouldn’t seem appropriate for a congratulatory gift in either case. Still, Zezeth was a bit fragile but whole and seemed to be progressing normally and with a Gather coming up, Rhaedalyn knew she had to find Madiquel the perfect dress.

Truthfully, Madiquel was like another daughter to her. Her mother had died in the landslide and while Jajojin did the best he could for her, a womanly touch was sometimes still needed and Rhaedalyn jumped in to help fill that void. Just like she may have helped push Madiquel along in her obvious crush on D’hys. She had purposely sent the bluerider to deliver the gift to help encourage the girl to speak to him some more.

Taking Madiquel’s hand, Rhaedalyn led them off the path of stalls so they wouldn’t be in the way while the talked. They kept in touch via letter but it wasn’t the same as in person. “You are absolutely beautiful, Madi! And not just the dress. You’re glowing with happiness and that makes me so happy… and curious. It can’t just be getting out of the Weyr. Do you have plans for the day?”

Madiquel blushed deeply, but smiled brilliantly at Rhaedalyn’s compliment, biting her bottom lip before giving the woman another quick hug in thanks, not sure how else to articulate what the compliment meant. When her hand was taken, and she was led off the main path, Madiquel squeeze Rhaedalyn’s fingers gently. She’d missed her friend so much! While the young greenrider was akin to a daughter to Rhaedalyn, the goldrider was hovering the realm of mother for Madiquel; she loved Rhaedalyn dearly, more than she could say, and she hadn’t realised how much she missed her friend and mentor before seeing her in person once again. It wasn’t even that they hadn’t seen each other in such a long time. It felt like an eternity, but surely it hadn’t been that long since Rhaedalyn last visited Ista?

Not lingering on that, Madiquel smiled as R’nya glanced at them fondly, before wandering off. No doubt he’d spend his alone time buying gifts for his beautiful mate and their daughters. Madiquel certainly hoped he was, anyway, though she knew history said he was. “I’ve missed you!” Madiquel said with honest fever, beaming up at Rhaedalyn once again, but she nodded. “It is very good to be off the Island,” she laughed. This was their first long distance trip between and she hadn’t left Zezeth’s side since Impressing her pretty green reed. She’d been a bit worried about leaving her Papa for the few days she would be in Benden, and had sent Clover back to the Weyr as fast as possible so the green flit could deliver the ‘arrived safely!’ message she’d decided to send her Papa, just to reassure him that they were both fine. Clover would do periodic checks on the man over the next few days, probably to the point where it would drive him a bit (more) nutty!

“Shopping,” Madiquel laughed, “and dancing!” She lifted the hand she had linked with Rhaedalyn’s so she could twirl around, the skirts flaring a little around her legs and Madiquel dropped into a neat curtsy when she was facing Rhaedalyn once more, giggling. “I’m going to track Quin down tomorrow, and he’s going to officially meet Zezeth!” She was pretty excited about that, and she was looking forward to seeing her friend again! Especially after the horror she’d heard about happening at his last Standing. Her smile faltered for a moment, guilt and regret flashing across her eyes, before she pushed the emotions aside and smiled again. “And I want to cross paths with Vaera at some point, too!” Gosh, having a dragon that wasn’t allowed to travel was so inconvenient, but the future would be theirs and Madiquel was looking forward to graduating and being allowed to travel with her dragon anywhere they wanted (within reason, of course!) to see whomever they wanted, when they wanted. It would be amazing!

And of course – “And TayTay should be around somewhere. Zee is with Xy,” She twisted a little, glancing around like she thought her friend might appear out of the milling people; it wasn’t an impossibility, but he was taller than most people, especially the gaggles of ladies that were milling around. She didn’t see him, though, and turned her attention back to Rhaedalyn with a radiant smile. “Otherwise, no plans,” she laughed. “What are you up to? You lost your escort,’ she giggled, nodding in the direction R’nya had long since vanished into.

“No plans, eh?” Rhaedalyn laughed with the Madiquel ended her long list of things she wanted to do in the short amount of time given to her away from Ista. She didn’t blame her young friend and would have done much the same in her position. Honestly, they were in rather similar situations. Running a Weyr didn’t leave her and R’nya with much free time even with a Weyrsecond, Head Woman, mentors, and other staff members. They were always on call and even now, spending the day away from the region had her a bit anxious that someone would come running for her—or more likely, R’nya. Still, she was going to dance, shop, and visit friends as well.

“And I lost my preferred escort,” Rhaedalyn clarified and then glanced around the crowd of people milling about. “Trust me, the leaders are never truly alone. There’s always someone watching to make sure we’re safe and don’t need anything,” she sighed, a bit annoyed but also used to such measures when she was out in the public. Usually that only happened when she was out with R’nya since he was the more important of the two of them leadership-wise. Golds were still low in numbers so they weren’t allowed to leave their Weyrs too often to begin with as its own way of protection and that probably bothered her the most. She wanted to visit friends or sweet young girls she’d taken under her wing—instead she had to send letters or ask someone like D’hys to check up on people for her.

“But I’ll probably browse a bit more before making my way to the dance square, hopefully with R’nya. Although,” Rhaedalyn gave Madiquel a knowing look and decided to nudge the young woman toward a wonderful and harmless idea. “D’hys is around somewhere as well and I heard he’s an excellent dancer. I’m sure he would love to take someone for a few spins around the floor if asked.” From what she had witnessed personally in the past, their interactions were always brief but he treated Madiquel well and certainly wouldn’t find a reason to turn her away for a dance—especially with how grown up she now was and looking absolutely stunning in the dress. She couldn’t decide if she was happy or sad that Jajojin couldn’t see his daughter like this right now.

“Yeah,” Madiquel said softly, glancing around with a sort of grimace. She knew what Rhaedalyn was talking about, since she’d noticed her own shadow flittering around her like an anxious firelizard. Not that Madiquel really understood why – unless their purpose was to get her to Zezeth as fast as possible in the event of some obscure emergency. She certainly didn’t think she was likely to do anything that would distress her dragon. Her dragon, on the other hand, was inclined to break in a strong wind. She felt Zezeth’s flair of attitude at that thought, and her lip twitched in a small smile.

Her attention was then fully torn away from her dragon, and Madiquel blushed to the roots of her hair. “Do you think so?” She asked, her voice breathless and soft, eyes as wide as saucers and filled with desperate hope. Madiquel never would have dreamed of asking D’hys – no, that was a lie! She would definitely have dreamed, but she never would have actually considered actually asking him – without Rhaedalyn’s prompting. Plus, Rhaedalyn would never set her up for failure, so if the goldrider said it was so, Madiquel believed it with her whole heart. But still!

It did not – and would not – occur to Madiquel to pretend anything about her feelings that were not true. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and while she would certainly do her best to never fawn over anyone in any way around her Papa, that was different. Her Papa was delicate of mind, and Madiquel didn’t know how he would react to her obvious infatuation with someone – especially someone she knew he wouldn’t approve of. Of course, Madiquel was quite sure her Papa would never approve of anyone, given the way it had taken forever for him to even get to the point of not glaring at her friends. And they were just friends!

Oh Madiquel had it bad for D’hys. Rhaedalyn almost felt guilty for encouraging the crush after all, knowing the bluerider was older than even her and likely wouldn’t ever return the girl’s affections. But as a dreamer herself, she couldn’t shatter Madiquel’s hopes, especially when she had come to learn how wonderful D’hys was over the years since moving North. She once was cautious around him since he was friends with that horrible creature Z’ia but D’hys had proven his worth and earned her trust and friendship. Though, perhaps she should start talking up boys closer to Madiquel’s age—after the girl got her dance. A dance that perhaps she should ask R’nya to talk to D’hys about accepting.

“I know so. I also think you could get any dance partner you want. How could anyone turn down such a beautiful and charming young lady?” She knew A’tay and Quinvalis would both clamour to get a dance in and some of Madiquel’s other friends would be fools not to dance with her as well. She smiled fondly at Madiquel, realising in roughly ten years, she could be having the same conversation with one of her daughters, encouraging them to go after the sweet boy they liked—but not to tell their father until they were sure he couldn’t scare the love interest away.

“I should stop hogging all of your free time. You go and enjoy yourself and I can’t wait to hear all about your day when we get together again soon.” Rhaedalyn had already decided she would visit Ista in the next week or two to check in with Madiquel and Casa. She was certain her young friend was holding her own as Weyrwoman but it never hurt to talk openly with a friend and someone who understood what she was going through.
