Kor'is.

Out of all of the names he and his dragon had bickered over, it was still the best one, though it was going to take some getting used to. He was used to Kordiavis or even Kordi but Kor'is? He'd get there, he didn't really have a choice. At least it wasn't K'di--which actually had been his original thought when it came to his honorific but he just wasn't feeling it anymore.

I liked it! But Kor'is is nicer. Taith exclaimed with his head still in the bucket of food.

Kor'is gave a noise of acknowledgement but didn't add to it since he already knew the dragon's stance on the choices. Anyway, he had a feeling his closest friends would still call him Kordi anyway so it wasn't like he was losing a piece of himself because of the pudge-master he was currently brushing sand and other gross things off of. He really didn't want to think about what he was cleaning off of the dragon so his name was a good place to focus.

That also meant he wasn't thinking about the fact that he had actually Impressed or how his mother would take the news or how one day he could end up batshit insane like her. He also wasn't thinking about how mere hours ago he saw Tazikel in the stands and that left him confused about how much interest he had in the lordling, especially after a kiss that had seemed like a very good idea at the time. It was a good thing he wasn't thinking about that since he was now celibate for the next several months.

What's 'celibate' mean? Taith had finished scarfing down his food and was now looking at Kor'is which made the man's stomach turn. He quickly took the cloth to the dragon's face to wipe away breakfast.

"It means I won't have time to be close to anyone because all of my time and attention will be spent on you." Not that he had many people he was close to or close to anyway but Kor'is preferred having that choice left in his own hands and not dictated by a dragon's needs.

When the earthquake started, he really didn't notice. The back of his mind pointed out that people were a lot louder than usual but Kor'is was busy washing a pale blue hide while lost in thought. It was only when Taith's excitement reached a new octave that Kor'is snapped back to attention and noticed the commotion. "How about we not get that loud right now?"

But the earth is shaking and a boy is injured! Kor'is frowned and stood up to see what was going on and oh shit, yeah, that was definitely an injured kid over there. And he thought Taith's muzzle was a bloody mess after feeding. Kor'is looked away before he saw anything in too much detail. If that kid resembled the dragon's food in any way, he'd never be able to look in a bucket again.

He sat back down after everything calmed down again and went back to caring for Taith and calling for another bucket as he felt his stomach rumble with needs that weren't his own. "Seriously? Maybe we shouldn't be going for seconds, kiddo."

By the time the Hatching ended, Kor'is was fine with his name and still happily ignoring everything else that was affected in his life by the change in status. He also had a fed and oiled hatchling that was trying not to snooze in his lap because Kor'is was being stubborn and refusing to head out yet. He had wanted to see if Mylorah Impressed and when she didn't, he knew she'd come rushing over to see him. She would probably congratulate him but he was still on the fence if that was the right word or if condolences were in order.

He should have known she'd bring Tazikel along, though.

Fuck.

What the heck was even going on?

Mylorah was confused about a lot of things that happened during the Hatching but she did know that Kordiavis and Dandioar had Impressed. She was thrilled for the men but also bummed that she lost two of her favourite friends with benefits. At least Dandioar was going into it sated from the day before, she smiled to herself at that memory.

But what happened with the second gold? She had thought T'ryn brought Cazelarias with him but apparently it was Cazan in disguise because she didn't think she could attend as a woman? What was wrong with Holders? She'd have to ask Tazikel about that later on and definitely had to make sure she congratulated Cazan--though maybe she'd wait considering the frantic display the woman was putting on. T'ryn had his hands full with that one!

She made her way to the stands and bounced up the steps to where her friends were still milling about. She stuck her tongue out in greeting at N'mor simply because she could and then gave Casa a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for bringing Tazikel!" Last she heard, T'ryn would bring him like he usually did but she'd seen him arrive with Casa since her brother was probably all over the place to get his Lady friend. "I hope he wasn't too much of a pain to wake up. I know how stubborn he can be." She giggled as she teased her lordling and then bounced over to him to wrap her arms around his neck.

"Sorry. Still no dragon for me so that means you're stuck with me a little longer," she gave him a quick kiss and then glanced over to where most of the weyrling class was still working with their dragons. She honestly didn't expect Kordiavis to still be over there since he Impressed early on and he wasn't really a people person, but she found him sitting with his dragon and Mylorah suspected he was waiting for her, knowing she'd give him an earful if he tried to leave.

"My dear Sir Tazicurls, will you accompany me on the long trek across the sands to see our recently promoted friend?" Despite asking, she didn't give Tazikel a chance to say no as she grabbed his hand and gave it a little tug before leading the way to Kordiavis.

Blonde and wavy, Tazikel wears his hair so that it ends a little past his ears. Due to the wave, it's a bit longer when damp. He's at that age where he can finally sorta grow a beard but it never really gets anywhere, so he keeps it fairly stubbly so it looks very intentional (even if he can't grow a proper beard).

Tazikel was relieved when Mylorah waltzed her way over to the stands to greet the little group he was in, it gave him something to focus on other than whatever was going on with T’ryn and his friend - who was actually the lady who had been at the party, not her brother, which was a little weird, but whatever. Some families were real strict about where women could go and what they could do unchaperoned, and while many would consider a bronzerider an acceptable enough escort, some fell more on the side of ‘all dragonriders are insatiable sex addicts who will deflower any and all unwatched maidens,’ and if she came from one of those he supposed dressing up as her brother wasn’t too ridiculous. A little extreme, but not completely unthinkable. To his mind, anyway. His mother might have some other thoughts about it if she heard rumors or he told her.

Not that he didn’t appreciate a good scandal or anything, but the whole thing was starting to hurt his head, and feigning offense at Mylorah’s light hearted teasing was simpler.

“I am a joy to be around in the morning, thank you very much,” he said, happy to accept the kiss and quick hug.

He was a little less enthusiastic about being dragged to visit Kordiavis, since Tazikel was still hoping to put off dealing with that for a bit longer. No such luck, it seemed. Ah well, he really should congratulate his friend. It was polite, and what friends should do. If he and Kordiavis were even friends anymore. They were, right? Tazikel was just overthinking everything and nothing at all had changed (except maybe him?). Too late in any case, because Mylorah had gotten them both to the newly minted bluerider.

“Hey,” Tazikel said, at a loss for what else to say. Perhaps letting Mylorah take the lead was the best idea, she knew what one was supposed to say when a friend Impressed, right? That seemed the smart thing to do. If left to his own devices Tazikel would definitely say something stupid, and he’d rather avoid that if at all possible.

Mylorah gave the boys an odd look as they exchanged one ‘hey’ for another. It wasn’t like she was expecting hugs—especially given one of the men was Kordiavis—but she figured their usual laidback attitudes would still be there. What had gotten into them? Maybe it was just the adorable and somewhat round hatchling sitting between them that was throwing things off. She’d get to the extremely pale blue boy after she dealt with the human counterpart.

“Congratulations, Kordi!” Mylorah smiled at the new blue weyrling and crouched down beside him and took his hand in hers to give it a squeeze. She often still gave her friends hugs after they Impressed but she’d also been trying not to make people or dragons uncomfortable since Dyoricath so the hand-hug was all Kordiavis was getting for the time being. “I never doubted it, you know. No matter how much you complained about the Touchings and Hatchings, I knew you would have a mate in one of those eggs.” And that was the truth. She had no doubt that he would eventually do as he kept threatening and stop Standing but Mylorah believed even then a dragon would find him. He needed the companion whether he wanted to see that or not.

Letting go of his hand, she turned her attention to the dragon that had been oddly quiet so far. She wondered if perhaps he was an observer like Kordiavis or just polite and waiting to be acknowledged—very much not like Kordiavis. “Hello, I’m Mylorah, one of your mate’s friends. Thank you for finding him. He was in need of you,” she whispered the last bit but had still cast a glance at Kordiavis as she did so, knowing he likely still heard her assuming he was paying any attention.

“Hey,” Kor’is replied, not sure what else he was supposed to say. It wasn’t really a situation he knew how to handle and it looked like Tazikel didn’t either. But was that about his friend Impressing or was he still thinking about the kiss as well? Not that he should be doing so now anyway, Kor’is realised as he looked at the dragon that was staring at him. Thanks to the lump, kisses weren’t really something he’d have to worry about for a while.

He rolled his eyes at Mylorah’s genuine excitement and gave her a little nod. “Yeah, thanks, I guess. I feel like condolences fit better,” he muttered as the girl’s attention went to the dragon. Great, he already knew that was going to be a bad combination and they would get along wonderfully and work together against him.

Hello! I’m Taith and he’s Kor’is now, though you can still call him Kordi. I think he might prefer it. Taith stated as he looked back at his mate and then back to the pretty girl. She seemed nice and he really liked how she already knew how well they fit together. I know. His mind was crying out for me. It’s so beautiful but also dark. There was so much good in Kor’is but it was hard to see and it made him sad.

“Okay, that’s enough of that, kiddo. How about you go for that second helping after all?” Kor’is was not a fan of talking about himself so he certainly wasn’t going to let a dragon start sharing what he found in his mind.

We have guests and it would be terribly rude to eat in front of them! Besides, Taith turned his gaze to Tazikel and quirked his head to the side considering him. I haven’t even met this one yet. Hello! I’m Taith, nice to meet you.

When the dragonet started speaking Tazikel may - definitely- have started, staring a little at him. Taith. He’d known dragons could talk, but none had ever bothered to speak to him before. That was enough of a surprise on its own, but Taith talking brought another surprise - Kordiavis had a new name, which of course was an aspect of becoming a dragonrider Tazikel had completely overlooked. Kor’is - how long would it take him to get used to that?

And of course the dragonet now had to address Tazikel directly, and the whole situation had him so caught off guard he resorted to the formality that had been drilled into him since birth.

“Tazikel, second son of Tillek,” he said to Taith, with a sort of half-bow; he realized halfway through the ingrained action that bowing was probably too much. Oh well. “It is good to meet you as well, Taith of Kor’is,” Tazikel continued. He figured he might as well go all the way with excessive polite formalities. What else did one say to a baby dragon? Happy birthday? Congratulations? Tazikel shot questioning looks at both Mylorah and Kordia - Kor’is, figuring they knew more about baby dragons than he did. When they didn’t offer immediate help, Tazikel looked back to Taith. He really was a very pale little dragon, wasn’t he? Tazikel had to admit it was a nice color. Blue looked good on Kordiav- Kor’is. Fuck.

A pleasure, Tazikel, second son of Tillek! Taith replied, mimicking the bow as best as a dragon could, which resulted in his wings extending a bit and his head dipping.

From the smile Mylorah was giving Tazikel, Kor'is knew she found the lordling's antics charming but he found it over the top yet also comforting. In a way, it was something familiar from a life time long ago when he was stuck in the Hold and surrounded by such greetings--he even got into the habit of such pretentiousness as well. But mostly, in that moment, Kor'is saw it as Tazikel being off-kilter and unsure of what to do with a baby dragon. That made two of them honestly.

"The pudgy monster is right. I don't care what name you use and it doesn't seem like you're insulting him either if you don't use the honorific." Really, what was even the point of the new name? Just a status symbol? Kor'is figured that having the 'bluerider' before his name was status enough but what did he know or even care, honestly? If it made the dragon happy, he'd go with Kor'is but still answer to Kordiavis or Kordi. The name didn't change who he was.

"Finish your food while I talk to them and I'll oil you after," Kor'is told the dragon as he got to his feet so he could better talk with Tazikel without feeling like he was being talked down to. Taith seemed to hesitate and Kor'is got a serious case of feeling like he'd be missing out and gave the dragon a look. "You're still going to hear everything. Just go eat." Finally Taith did, but only after giving Mylorah and Tazikel each a little nodding-bow.

"I know how much you love gossip, but mind not telling Aldra or anyone for a while? I don't feel like answering letters and I really don't want visitors." Aldra and some of Tazikel's relatives had the potential for either and Kor'is didn't want to deal with the old life crashing back into his new--well, newest since he supposed he was in another transition--life more so than Tazikel's reappearance had done.

Taith’s awkward attempt at bowing was actually quite endearing, and Tazikel smiled at the dragon, relaxing a tiny fraction. At least, until Kor’is started talking to him and the tenseness came back. Tazikel shook his head in response to Kor’is, trying to shake out some of his uncharacteristic nervousness along with the movement.

“I won’t say anything until you give the go ahead. Between the ground shaking and a lady dressed as her brother Impressing, I’m sure I’ll have plenty of gossip to satisfy the people back home if anyone bothers to ask about the Hatching. Perhaps I’ll just forget your Impression in the wake of the other things, after all,” he said cheerfully, and he was relieved that it didn’t seem forced or fake. “Everyone knows I’m easily distracted and forgetful, the fact one of my childhood friends Impressed might just slip my mind.” Tazikel managed a small smile, one that he hoped was reassuring.

“No one will hear anything from me, promise.”

“Promise? That’s not reassuring,” Kor’is gave a genuine laugh as memories came back to him. “As I recall, there were several times where you told me to trust you and promised everything would be fine and they most certainly weren’t. Aldra didn’t speak to me for three days after—well. After.” His gaze went to Mylorah whom had just been more interested in all the baby dragons a moment ago but now seemed rather apt on their conversation and he wasn’t going to give her too many freebie juicy tidbits from the past.

“Anyway, thanks for…” Kor’is had no idea what he should thank them for. Thanks for coming to watch me Impress even though it wasn’t really desired anymore? Thanks for thinking it’s a good thing? “Being here.” He supposed that worked. They, along with Sh’ran, were really the only people he could tolerate for long periods of time and even called them friends so having them there and showing an interest in his well-being and liking the hatchling that was now watching them again instead of eating was nice.

“But I should go join the class and oil Taith again before his nap time.”

It seemed Mylorah had gotten over whatever had been making her hesitate when it came to her usual interactions as she flung herself at him, pulling him into a hug. Kor’is stood there in shock from how quickly she could strike and slowly wrapped his arms around her. That was pretty normal for such things as he’d never grown up around so much affection and wasn’t used to people in his personal bubble no matter how often some tossed hugs his way.

He gave Tazikel a look as if to say ‘good luck dealing with her on your own’ before memories of just how well Tazikel could handle Mylorah hit him. Kor’is quickly stepped away from Mylorah’s embrace and started thinking about the bucket of disgusting raw meat before the nosy dragon latched onto anything that didn’t need to be broadcasted.

“That’s a different kind of promise, and you know it,” Tazikel said with a grin, remembering the incident in question. Because really, promising he wouldn’t say something was nothing at all like promising that his plan was totally foolproof and, no, they wouldn’t get in trouble, as long as about six moving pieces worked flawlessly. Which they didn’t. Not saying something was a lot easier to guarantee.

He smiled softly at the enthusiastic hug Mylorah gave Kor’is, especially how he slowly gave in to the inevitability of it and hugged back. It was nice to see his friends like this. Tazikel was even considering joining the hug himself, or clapping Kor’is on the shoulder or something, but then Kor’is’s gaze caught his, and there was something in his eyes that made Tazikel suddenly certain if he touched Kor’is just then one or both of them would catch fire or something equally dramatic.

“Right,” he said awkwardly as Kor’is stepped out of Mylorah’s hug, “We’ll let you focus on your dragon now.” Tazikel internally winced at how terribly inelegant of a conversation ender it was, but too late now. He was careful not to meet Kor’is’ eyes again, afraid of what he might see in them if he did.

Mylorah pouted as Kor'is stepped back and then practically ran away with his brisk pace as the super adorable Taith trotted along beside him. She already loved that dragon and knew he would be good for her friend--even if said friend didn't seem to want to believe it at the moment. Maybe Taith would get him to open up some more and share stories instead of teasing her like he had just done.

But Tazikel was far more open and Mylorah spun to her other companion and smiled sweetly at him. "You are definitely going to tell me the details to that story, but later. First, I want to know why the two of you were so weird." Yes she had been pretty distracted by Taith and some of the other hatchlings circling near by but she had still been listening to the conversation and had seen the way both men had been right from the get go.

She had initially put it off to Tazikel not knowing how to interact with a dragon, especially since as far as she knew, Syrendryth was the only one --other than Thallyath now who wasn't much better-- he really interacted with and that dragon rarely spoke to anyone other than T'ryn. But the interactions between the boys seemed off and she had caught a couple of glimpses or panic in eyes that were most definitely not normal.

Had something happened in the past week that she wasn't aware of? She hoped not! She'd feel terrible for bringing Tazikel along to greet Kor'is. What if he'd only gone along to humour her and didn't want to mention there had been a falling out? "Everything okay with you two? You're still friends, right?" Mylorah worried her lower lip as she searched his face for an answer. Tazikel really wasn't that great at hiding his feelings but she was worried now he might try.

Tazikel slung an arm around Mylorah when she turned to him, nodding in agreement to her demand he elaborate on the story Kor’is had alluded to - it was pretty entertaining, especially now that it was a number of turns in the past and Tazikel was significantly better at laughing at his past self. Besides, it turned out worse for Kordi than it had for him, ultimately. But she apparently didn’t want the story immediately, and what she wanted to talk about took Tazikel by surprise. Had it been that obvious? He’d been trying very hard to act normal, even with the added surprise of a dragon. Apparently he was either worse at faking being chill than he thought or Mylorah could read him better than he really wanted. Damn.

“Of course we’re still friends,” he assured her, mostly sure it was still true. Like, okay, maybe things were a little weird between them now - or Tazikel was just imagining Kor’is’ side of things and was just being weird himself - but he didn’t hate Kor’is or something stupid like that. The problem, in fact, was that Tazikel might like Kor’is more than anticipated. The very opposite of hating each other and not being friends. At least as long as Kor’is was alright with everything, but it wasn’t like Tazikel could go talk to him about it, not with little baby Taith needing all his attention for a while. They’d… they’d figure it out. Eventually.

“We’re good, Mylo,” Tazikel said when she still didn’t look convinced. “Promise,” he added, pressing a kiss to her temple and really, really hoping she’d believe him and move on to a topic Tazikel had any idea how to talk about. “More importantly, do you want embarrassing awkward child Kordi stories now, or later?”

Mylorah still wasn't convinced, even when he promised and reiterated they were good. But they were still able to share a laugh and hadn't argued and no one seemed angry--just weird. Maybe it was just some lordly thing that she wasn't picking up on. She tried to show an interest in the Hold side of Tazikel but even he wasn't too enthused about it so they didn't talk too much about it, though she did try to pay some sort of attention when she went to the parties. Obviously she missed something somewhere or maybe they had both received some news via letter.

Whatever it was, she'd let it go. For now. It was clear Tazikel didn't want to talk about it and it wasn't like she could even try to get it out of Kor'is for a while anyway thanks to his attention needing to be on Taith. So she finally gave Tazikel a smile and nodded at his idea. "Both. You can start by telling me about the one Kordi teased me with just now as we walk back to the barracks to change. I really hate this robe and I hate how often you see me in it."

Mylorah frowned as she tugged at the rough and ugly material. The day would eventually come where she didn't need to wear it anymore and she really hoped that would be because she Impressed and not due to aging out. But she still had quite a while to go before at least the aging out happened so she wasn't giving up hope yet. She could tolerate being seen in the thing a while longer--especially when Tazikel was there to help her out of it. Though, with only the one itchy layer, it was a lot easier than some other dresses he helped her out of.
