F’drel paced the small weyr Quinvalis had been brought to after the Hatching. R’nya had temporarily put Quinvalis in a weyr instead of in the Healers’ room to recover in so his mother could stay close by. If the way they’d been acting at the Hatching hadn’t been enough, the private room definitely confirmed R’nya was sleeping with her. Typical. It fit what F’drel knew of the Fort Weyrleader, certainly.

For once he wasn’t going to complain too much about the dubious favoritism. Since it was an unused weyr, there was space for Miri to stay too, so F’drel didn’t have to worry about her and she could stay close. She’d been distraught about Quinvalis getting hurt, and other than taking F’drel’s sisters home to Ista, she hadn’t left the small weyr. Quinvalis was her friend, and she was worried. F’drel couldn’t think of many times Halomirth had been more worried. The fires in Ista, maybe? It was hard to tell, her worry was compounding with his own making it difficult to sort out.

Quinvalis had woken briefly the night before. He hadn’t been very coherent, and the Healers had given him something almost immediately so he would go back to sleep - to keep him from moving around and aggravating the injuries, as well as to keep the pain down, they’d said - but he’d been awake. Which was a good sign. It could only be a good sign.

F’drel hadn’t meant to stay the night in Fort, but he’d been woken up by a Healer in the small hours of the morning after falling asleep in a chair by the bed Quinvalis was in and directed to a small cot set up nearby. He’d been too tired to protest - though he had moved the cot into a corner and closer to the door to where Halomirth was - and F’drel found arguing with Healers was rarely a good idea. Quilriana had been given a cot from the start; they’d expected her to stay, F’drel was a surprise. It was a surprise to him too, but here he was, back in the same chair he’d fallen asleep in, waiting. At some point he’d have to oil Halomirth, but he could definitely get R’dal or someone to bring some oil to the ledge so they would both stay nearby, just in case.

It had been forty-eight hours since her son had been mauled. Everything was a blur to her and she felt numb but Quilriana was well aware of the passage of time. The more time that passed, the more likely Quinvalis would be fine. They had gotten him through the crucial first few hours with stitches, bandages, and sedation. Eb'zer was a dear with his constant updates and positive outlook on the situation. She needed that because Quinvalis had looked dead when she first saw him. So much blood covering his motionless body.

She wouldn't have left the room, let alone the weyr if it wasn't for the greenrider Healer. He insisted her son would be fine and it was okay for her to slip off to have a bath and take some time for herself. She hadn't wanted to leave--what if he woke up again while she wasn't there?--but finally Quilriana agreed that a quick bath and a stretch of her legs would do her well, so she left early morning while her surprise roommate still slept.

F'drel wasn't much of a conversationalist but his concern for Quinvalis was genuine and that was enough for her. A little small talk was also nice to help keep her from going insane as she sat by her son's side, staring at his sweet face and hoping he'd wake--or she would wake from the obvious nightmare.

That was why she went down to the kitchen after her bath to grab them some food and especially klah. She'd noticed the day before that the man enjoyed it and would likely need some more than the little pot leftover from the day before they had in the weyr. She nodded a greeting to the Healer that was currently milling around as he likely just changed the bandages--something she knew they tried to do when she wasn't there to see the wounds--and then continued into the bedroom where she found F'drel back in 'his' chair by the bed.

Quilriana smiled at the sight, happy that Quinvalis had made such a good friend. She didn't want to speculate if that connection ran any deeper and hadn't asked F'drel for confirmation since she didn't want to put him on the spot, but if they were an item, she approved. The tray of food was set down on a table and the two mugs of klah picked up. She handed one to F'drel with a small smile as she came up beside him.

"Figured you would appreciate a fresh cup and they're going to bring up a pot in a bit as well." She moved around the bed and took what was now her chair and carefully took Quinvalis' fingers in her free hand. Everywhere was so bandaged that she had asked Eb'zer where she could hold her baby without causing more pain and fingers seemed to be the best option. "Quinnie's not a fan of klah. He likes the smell but has never liked the taste. His sister loves it though, which I hear is a good thing with all the studying she has at the Healer Hall."

The sound of the door opening had F’drel looking up, though he returned to watching Quinvalis once he’d confirmed it was just Quilriana returning. She looked a little more put together than he did at that moment, but she had probably gone to clean up and eat real food while she was out of the weyr. Which made sense, even if F’drel was a little surprised she had left Quinvalis with no one watching him - she hadn’t been there when F’drel woke up, after all. F’drel hadn’t felt comfortable leaving him alone, and even if Quilriana had been there asleep he probably wouldn’t have considered that sufficient. And if he was this bad with a fairly casual friend he couldn’t imagine how he’d be if it were R’dal who was hurt and unconscious, or Faranth forbid, one of his siblings. He’d be an absolute mess.

He blinked up at the offered mug, accepting it with a quiet thanks. Klah was always good. F’drel knew he probably drank too much of the stuff, but it was better than some of the possible alternatives. Fellis, for example. Klah didn’t do that to you, and it gave him something to busy his hands with, both making it and holding a mug. Before even considering saying anything else F’drel took a few sips of the warm drink.

“One of my sisters is the same,” he said finally, spinning the mug in his hands and resuming watching Quinvalis, “Loves the smell, can’t stand drinking it. She would sometimes take a mug to smell it and warm her hands, then when she was bored of that she’d give it to me to actually drink it.” F’drel wasn’t good at small talk, and he was loathe to impart any information about his family that could be used against them, but Quilriana needed the distraction and a sister not liking klah was benign enough.

“Have you sent word to Quilista yet?” F’drel asked, wondering if she’d done that while she was out of the weyr that morning. He’d have sent word immediately, but he didn’t know Quilista, and he wasn’t her mother, so F’drel wasn’t going to tell Quilriana what to do. Even if he thought she really should have by then.

F'drel never said too much but she appreciated when he tried and gave him a little smile as he shared the story about a sister. Knowing that he was an older brother made his concern make more sense to Quilriana, though again, it didn't take away from the theory that the greenrider was involved with her son either. Still, she was once again grateful Quinvalis had F'drel in his life in any capacity.

She nodded at the question and took a sip of her klah. "Yesterday morning. I wanted to have some good news to send so she wouldn't worry as much but I also told the messenger to stand firm. She's not allowed to see him until her brother is awake and says she can." She set her mug down and gently brushed aside some of his hair. "He wouldn't want her to see him like this. He's always been so good with looking after her."

Quinvalis really had been a gem when the kids were little and couldn't help in the tavern. He'd keep them both entertained up in their little room or play outside out of the way. Then when they were older and could help clean or prep, he continued watching over her, letting no one or anything harm her. Quilriana knew he wouldn't want his sister to see him in pain or looking so weak. He'd probably even try to hide the injuries if he could. Sweet but stubborn boy.

"Mom?" Quinvalis winced at how hoarse he sounded due to how dry his mouth was but he wasn't sure if he was hallucinating or not as his eyes fluttered open. He felt what he assumed was her hand squeeze his fingers and he gave a weak smile before letting his eyelids that felt so heavy close again.

When next he woke, he wasn't aware of how much time had passed but he did see F'drel this time and he frowned in confusion. He was happy to see his friend but hadn't he just seen his mom? He glanced around the room and saw his mom sitting on the other side of the bed and that only confused him further. His mind was so foggy and he struggled to come up with why they would both be waiting for him to wake up.

"Are you sleeping together?" Quinvalis gasped in pain as he tried to sit up before sinking back down into the bed. He tried clearing his throat and swallowed a couple of times, finding his mouth still too dry. "Or I'm not actually dead and you've been waiting for me." The pain jarred some sense back into him and he recalled the Hatching and the frightened blue tangling with him and how he was convinced he wasn't going to survive. Apparently he had, at least for now, who knew how bad his injuries were?

"Did the blue hatchling survive?" He didn't blame the boy for what had happened and hoped he had found his mate. Quinvalis didn't want to think about the blue going between afraid and alone.

Quinvalis’ reluctance for his sister to see him hurt made perfect sense to F’drel, and he nodded at Quilriana’s words. He was the same, after all, never wanted his siblings to see him as anything other than a rock for them to hold onto. Seeing him falling apart wouldn’t help with that. That reluctance was a good part of why he’d withdrawn more from his siblings the last few turns F’drel was in Nabol, not wanting any of them to have an idea of how poorly he was dealing with everything.

He would have said something to the effect of understanding how Quinvalis felt when F’drel saw Quinvalis shift slightly and the words died immediately. F’drel held his breath as Quinvalis opened his eyes for a moment, just long enough to recognize his mother and say one word - mom - before his eyes were closing again. Long moments passed and F’drel sat perfectly still, looking for any sign Quinvalis would regain consciousness soon.

It took maybe another fifteen minutes for Quinvalis to stir again and as soon as the movement registered F’drel’s focus, which had wavered a little when it was clear Quinvalis wouldn’t be awake again within a few minutes, went right back to trying to catch every little sign he was waking up and would be okay. He watched Quinvalis’ eyes open again, and look around briefly, but as soon as he spoke F’drel almost choked on air. Were they what? How much pain medicine had the Healers given him? What kind of question was that? Why the fuck had it ocurred to Quinvalis? Whatever, not important. Because Quinvalis had moved on, saying something about how he’d thought he was dead and F’drel couldn’t help reaching forward to gently rest his hand against the one Quin’s mother wasn’t holding. Some vague thought about more physical evidence of other people might help reassure Quinvalis he was alive, and his hands were fine, as evidenced by his mother holding one. And then Quinvalis was asking if the blue was okay, because of course he was, Quinvalis was just that nice. It really was no wonder Miri liked him so much.

“He Impressed, though I have no idea who to. I wasn’t paying attention,” F’drel said quietly. “I’m sure he’s fine.” He felt a subdued nudge in his head, quite unlike Miri’s usual boisterousness, and F’drel sent her waves of reassurance, along with plenty of images of Quinvalis awake, even if all the bandages might reduce the effect.

“Miri’s here too and is glad you’re awake. She’s worried your head’s still too fuzzy for her to talk to you directly, but when you’re feeling better she’s just on the other side of that wall,” F’drel said, passing along Halomirth’s message. She let out a soft trill in F’drel’s head, again not wanting to disturb Quinvalis, glad her well wishes and concern were made known.

Quilriana smiled when Quinvalis first saw her and sighed as he slipped back into unconsciousness. It was probably better for him as he wouldn't feel as much pain or realise how much he had endured but she just wanted her baby boy back. She wished it hadn't happened at all but knowing he was recovering just showed how strong he was and she was so proud of him.

Even more so when he woke again and asked after the hatchling that had attacked him. Of course that came after her heart broke upon hearing that he was surprised he was alive. She couldn't imagine what he thought out on the sands before passing out and all she wanted to do was hold him and never let go again. But she didn't do that, didn't even shed another tear as she tried to show she was as strong as Quinvalis.

"Rhaedalyn came by yesterday to check in on you. She also mentioned the blue is doing well and Impressed to a wonderful man but I can't recall either name at the moment. I'll find out again for you, though." Quilriana knew her son would want to know the details and she also saw the relief when F'drel said the blue lived. Quinvalis would have blamed himself forever if he hadn't, she didn't doubt that.

Quinvalis relaxed upon hearing the blue lived and had a good mate. He could have been the reason the little guy didn't Impress and vanished. What if he'd panicked too much or worried about hurting a human and just couldn't handle it? But he didn't have to think that. The blue lived and apparently, so had he. That was a lot more than he was expecting and a small part of him was sad that he survived but the rest of him was glad, especially as he saw how worried his mom was and heard that even Halomirth was worried. And the fact that F'drel was there as well meant a lot to him and made him fully aware of how much that egg at the Touching was right. He was loved.

"Miri! I'll visit her soon, promise." He smiled and wanted to hug his favourite green dragon but since moving anything at the moment hurt, he suspected hugs weren't in his near future. Maybe he could ask for a bed out on the ledge so he can just hang out with the dragons. Xyreith might even stop by then--not that there would be any conversing with him but Quinvalis didn't mind the silence either.

"Should I ask how bad it is?" He could feel where a lot of pain was coming from and when he wiggled his toes, he felt them all as well, so that was a good sign. It also felt like all of his insides were still inside so that was nice. "Think there will be scars? Some girls like that, right?" He cracked a small smile as he joked about it though everything really did still hurt and he was afraid to know how bad it all was.

“Worry about healing, don’t go making promises about visiting anyone yet,” F’drel said with a soft sigh at Quinvalis’ sheer determination to make people happy, barely a minute into consciousness after a major injury. “Miri will wait to see you until you’re ready.” Halomirth nodded her head vigorously in agreement, though no one could see it.

To Quin’s question, F’drel just shook his head. “I’m no Healer, so I really don’t know. Do what they tell you and don’t aggravate anything if you can help it, and you can reduce scarring. Once it’s healed more I know you can massage the new skin with oil, like you would a dragons’ hide, and that helps some. But,” he continued, unconsciously switching more into his older brother voice, “I don’t think any girl who’s too into scars is a girl you want interested in you.” Why would anyone be into scars? Physical proof a person you, in theory, cared about went through pain and trauma? No, if someone was attracted to scars it meant they didn’t care about the person themself. Or liked being the source of them, which was worse. F’drel didn’t really like the idea at all. Better to warn Quinvalis off that idea early.

“You’ll heal, Quin,” he said quietly, squeezing Quinvalis’ hand a little to emphasize the point. “It might suck on the way there, but you’ll get there. Miri and I will help, if you let us.”

Quinvalis pouted at all of the lecturing but he didn’t argue any of it. He knew it came from a good place and he appreciated how much F’drel cared—even if he was being a bit too over protective. He didn’t say he was going to visit Halomirth that day, or give a time at all; just promised he would. Of course he would wait until he could actually move without too much pain. As it was, just trying to return the hand squeeze both were giving him was a lot of effort so getting to the ledge was certainly out of the question.

“You can help, but only if you can manage to get my mom to go home and not worry.” He gave her a smile, knowing that he had to have worried her sick—again—with this Hatching. He also knew she wouldn’t leave if it were up to her, not until he was all patched up. A part of him worried she would demand he came home with her and leave the Weyr and dragons behind. Quinvalis wouldn’t blame her if she did and he’d go quietly as well so as not to continue being such a source of pain for her. But he didn’t want to be a burden either which was why he tried so hard to be useful at the Weyr and wanted a dragon.

“But for now, I promise not to make promises about visiting people and I promise to focus on healing. Which might mean going back to sleep.” He hurt and he was a bit groggy still as well and Quinvalis figured sleep was the best medicine for a lot of ailments so dragon mauling probably fell in there as well. Besides, he had asked if F’drel was sleeping with his mom so clearly he wasn’t in any state to stay awake much longer.

“Conveniently, the best way to help people who care about your wellbeing worry less is have others there to help make sure you’re getting better properly.” Like how Mylorah watching over Ferra on the Sands was quite possibly what kept F’drel from pulling her off the Sands himself. F’drel was really starting to hate Hatchings - and somehow he doubted Ferra would conveniently decide she was done with them altogether and he’d have to sit through many, many more. As if he wouldn’t have had to sit through them to support R’dal anyway, and as if Miri didn’t love attending. No, F’drel would be stuck attending Hatchings forever. He just hoped the people he liked could just Impress to good, metallic dragons or give up on Impressing permanently as soon as possible.

He would never get that lucky, F’drel just knew it.

“Sleep’s probably best right now,” he agreed, resisting the urge to gently ruffle Quinvalis’ hair like he did when Kitelan was sick. That was probably a little much, especially with Quinvalis’ mother there. “One or both of us will be here when you wake up,” F’drel added softly, not sure if the words were even heard because Quinvalis’ eyes were already closed.
