She...didn't kick the egg, that was too far even for her and she called out to stop them with tears in her eyes. The gold's voice slammed into her and she jerked back as if she'd been slapped. Don't touch the green, warred with her Healer nature and it was the Healer that won when the green took a few steps before collapsing close to where Sariel was. Her hand flew to her mouth.

"Oh, poor love," Sariel whispered before falling to her knees before brushing her fingers just above the still green's body as she checked for life. She had to check, it would haunt her forever if she didn't. The dragonet was gone and she shook her head. Her voice was soft but clear."You tried, sweetling. You tried. Oh Faranth."

The tension flowed out of her body as she folded in on herself with grief that rattled her body, sobs wracking her frame as the tears tore through her. It was too much, the deaths, the little ones who made it with a hard road ahead. Whatever came next in the dark was sure to be better than that brief life. Sariel tried to move away but shuddered and bent her head in an effort to find a way to ease all the conflicting emotions warring inside of her. Some Impressed, some died, and she had been helpless to do anything. She had Healed no one, Impressed no dragon, despite her willingness to Stand.

The heat of the Sands was barely on her radar as she looked out at the broken shells and dead dragonets, her face ashen.

"I did love them all," she murmured and put a hand to her now messy braid in some vain attempt to regain her composure but all she could do was stare across the sands and take trembling breaths. In all of is madness, she had to remember that dragonets had been saved, they Impressed. They'd be fine with the strength of their riders.

It was fine.

Everything was just..fine.

Beckitt was still upset and frankly rather overwhelmed. Nothing about this hatching was going easily—not that any hatching ever was really, but he couldn’t remember anything as mentally brutal in recent years. His determination had wavered as L’gan reminded him of the brutal wounds inflicted by the brown the year before, but it vanished entirely as Thallyath’s voice boomed through the hatching grounds. He paled and took an involuntary step back as she bared her teeth and lashed her tail, but relaxed a fraction as she didn’t attack.

The crack of the egg echoed in the unnatural silence and he startled again. The candidates had clustered together and he clutched someone’s hand, not even sure who he held as everyone waited with baited breath. Come on, he thought, not daring even to whisper. His heart practically stopped as it wobbled on the sands and fell over. Don’t give up…please... A tiny, frail blue head seemed to answer, breaking the shell finally. The poor creature struggled to escape his shell and sprawled on the sands a moment, his eyes closing a moment, before opening, searching for-

B’kit. Mine. Help? Erebuth’s eyes whirled as he reached out to Beckitt’s—B’kit’s mind. He swallowed, his mouth dry even as tears pricked his eyes, hardly believing it. “I’m coming,” he whispered and nudged his way out of the circle of candidates, darting a glance at Thallyath before crossing to the tiny blue and sinking to his knees. “It’s okay, I’m here,” he smiled and stroked the soft skin gently.

Erebuth’s hunger was overwhelming now that he was closer to the little dragon, and Kitt helped the tiny blue to rise and move a little ways away, slowly and carefully, so the healers and assistants could help. He helped him settle, not sure the tiny blue would be able to stand for long and barely heard anything he was asked, completely focused on helping his bonded eat.

Narinoa was thankful to those that tried to calm down Sariel and Beckitt. He didn’t want to see anyone attacked by a dragon nor did he want them to be banned or punished for disobeying any rules. He knew their intentions were good and he wished they could do something as well but his training told him it was a fool’s errand. Even the two that had survived so far were in bad shape and he wasn’t sure they would make it through the night, though he hoped they did. He also knew it was possible for them to defy all the odds and pull through but it wouldn’t be easy.

Thallyath’s anger pierced through his distracted hoping and he jumped and stepped back as well. He hadn’t faced her wrath directly at the Touching thanks to his vomiting outside the grounds but he had still heard it and that had been more than enough for him. Seeing it now had him ready to piss himself. Thankfully his body was more in control than his brain at the moment and he clung to Beckitt when the man also stepped back and reached out for some support.

It didn’t last long as another egg cracked, calming the gold and his nerves. In a way, the Hatching was fascinating to his crafter side. He hated seeing any creature in such a state but he wanted to delve in further to learn about why it happened and to help nurse the dear little ones back to health. No doubt they would haunt his nightmares he already had, but that surprisingly didn’t deter him. Still, that didn’t mean he wanted to Impress to one of them and have their suffering directly throbbing in his head.

He also didn’t want it to happen to anymore friends but as Beckitt said something he missed and pulled away from him, Narinoa knew he was about to watch someone else Impress. At least this blue seemed about as strong as his brother and was able to walk a bit. That green, however, scared him. They all scared him but he didn’t get a chance to reflect further on that as he caught sight of someone kicking an egg. Did they have a death wish? Surprisingly Thallyath didn’t suddenly devour the idiot but she made a nice show of it as Narinoa took yet another step back.

Until he saw Sariel surging forward. What was with everyone being reckless? He swore under his breath until he saw that she wasn’t going after the egg but the content that spilled out. He saw right away that it was unmoving but hadn’t they all thought that about the green minutes before that ended up Impressing? “Fuck me,” Narinoa didn’t know why, but he pushed through the ring of Candidates as well and crouched down beside Sariel. He didn’t do his own check; she was the Healer after all and would know vitals better than he would.

Instead, he let her try to compose herself before he wrapped an arm around her waist and guided her away from the remnants of the Hatching. “I know you did. You have a good heart, Sariel,” he whispered as he walked them just past the lingering Candidates, intent on using them as a wall to help block out the horrible view of dead dragonets.

He pulled Sariel in for a hug, hoping she wouldn’t mind. He didn’t know her that well but she was kind and eager to learn and help and he wanted to repay that with his own kindness and help her through her emotions he had seen warring on her face. “Go ahead and cry if you need to. No one will judge you for it and I don’t mind. It’s an ugly robe anyway, go ahead and use it as you need.” He tried for a lighter mood by joking around a bit but that was all he could manage.

Light brown hair with a bit of a wave, usually kept relatively short. Verec usually has stubble, but he keeps himself well groomed even if not clean shaven. He is starting to grey at the temples.

Every Hatching Verec went to only served to reinforce his decision to only allow older, more experienced Healers to attend. The Master and two Journeymen he’d chosen specifically for their ability to stay cool in chaos, and while L’gan and Eb’zer were younger and a bit out of practice due to Impressing themselves, their more personal connection to the dragons could come in handy. And he didn’t have to worry about them Impressing twice, that just didn’t happen.

All five of them had comported themselves well, and Verec did not regret choosing to allow them at the Hatching. He sort of regretted allowing Madiquel at the Hatching. R’nya had made sure she was able to attend, due to technically being considered a Candidate despite the fact she wasn’t actually Standing for the Clutch- he was going to need to specify the rules after this. Since he was pretty sure Madiquel was the exception he wasn’t overly concerned about R’nya resisting him closing the loophole. And if he did, well, Verec would find a way.

It was something of a disappointment Madiquel had Impressed already. She wasn’t what he would call ‘a natural’ at Healing, but she was determined and worked hard and Verec had no doubt with proper training she would be an excellent Healer. If after this she ever reached that point, though as per his request all Healer-Candidates who Impressed would be allowed to return to the Hall after they graduated Weyrlinghood. Verec thought Madiquel would likely continue, but he could hardly predict nearly two turns in the future, especially when dragons were involved. She’d done well taking care of her dragonet, certainly, making sure people brought her what was needed to take care of it. It gave some further indication that Madiquel would do well as a Healer.

On the other end of the spectrum was Sariel, the other of the Healer-Candidates in attendance, and the only one who was officially Standing. Quite frankly, Verec hadn’t seen a whole lot of proof that she’d do well as a Healer in the field. Empathy and stubbornness were good things for Healers to have, but they needed to be restrained so that a Healer could get the job done efficiently. Verec could appreciate a strong will in a Healer, but Sariel had let her emotions be in control of her and that would not serve her in the Hall. She’d even yelled at an already upset gold dragon, and Verec may be no dragonrider (thank goodness) but he was well aware how poor of a choice that was. No, it wouldn’t do. He would have to have a serious conversation with her.

And then there were the dragonets themselves. Completely malnourished and clinging desperately to life; those that had Impressed, anyway. Caring for young creatures was not his area of expertise, but he had enough training and basic experience - he had a daughter, after all, she’d been a baby once and he’d attended plenty of births - to make sure his Healers kept the dragonets alive through the rest of the Hatching. Verec was planning on finding a Master with more experience in malnourishment in children to take over the care of the dragonets. He’d get it sorted out once he made it back to the Hall.

Verec had not expected the goldrider’s offer, giving the deceased dragonets to the Hall. It made good practical sense though, and he graciously accepted the offer, thanking the woman (Casa?) and assuring her the Hall would do what they could to help. The loss of knowledge about dragonhealing was tragic, and, as much as Verec hated to admit it, the Hall and the Weyrs would need to work together to rebuild the lost knowledge. He’d have to talk to R’nya about it, probably the Istan Weyrleader as well, and he’d like to bring in Eb’zer and L’gan to the conversations if possible.

Life had gotten much more complicated when the dragonriders had returned North, and while it was ultimately for the betterment of Pern, it inconvenienced Verec personally and he did not like it. What kept him from being completely insufferable as the Healers conferred with the Weyrlingmaster and his assistants about transporting the dragonets was making a mental list of all the things he wanted to try and get out of R’nya and the other Weyrleaders to support the Hall as it did its best to handle the influx of dragons and all the health problems they brought.

“Oh, my Hummingbird… not you too,” Mylorah was torn between devastated and thrilled that another friend Impressed. It was the third time now that she had seen someone close to her Impress to one of the weak dragonets that terrified her for reasons she couldn’t keep thinking about. She wasn’t built to withstand the constant onslaught of fear and it didn’t help that a part of her still wanted to be happy. It didn’t bother her that she was becoming closer and closer to being the last one of their age group to Impress. She was fine with never being a dragonrider if that was what the cards had in store for her since she couldn’t decide what colour she most desired, so it wasn’t a sense of being left behind that had her frowning at her various friends around the area soothing their dragons while people checked them out.

She wished there was something she could do to help and as Thallyath roared in anger once more, Mylorah paled and looked around for what caused it. She saw someone had approached an egg—she missed what had been done to it—but saw the green slither out and she whimpered as she knew what was about to happen. No way would a fluke like Madiquel coming to the rescue in time happen again… and she was right. A few tears slid down her cheeks as she watched Sariel confirm what they all knew. She had a feeling Sariel wanted to help as well and perhaps hoped to find a pulse and could keep the dragon going, but Mylorah thought it best that the baby died when she did and didn’t take anyone with her. Oh how she hated herself for thinking that!

When the last egg was deemed a dud, Mylorah was conflicted yet again. She wanted to check on Casa and Nerreh but she wanted to run around to each friend that Impressed but she also wanted to run to Tazikel and apologise for him seeing everything while also showing him how happy she was to see him again. Instead she turned back around in Kordiavis’ arms to hug him once more as she thought about what to do now that it was all over.

Casa would have people around her for a while. Whether they were other friends checking in or more official visits like Ameris, M’ris, or other Weyrleaders. She would definitely catch up with her soon, but she’d give her some space to breathe and deal with everyone else first. Nerreh would probably run for the door and hide again. She felt so bad for him. Nerreh didn’t ask for any of this and she’d make sure he knew not everyone blamed him or Faxxonth either. But she’d give them some space first. Perhaps jump Nerreh at a meal or force a meal upon her friend if he didn’t turn up. She knew where Nerreh lived and wasn’t afraid to barge in if needed!

Her friends with their new lifemates needed time to adjust. They would have Healers around them for a bit and eventually exhaustion would hit. She could try to sneak in and give them each a hug before they were spirited away but anything longer would have to wait. So that’s what she decided to do. She would go congratulate each of the three new Weyrlings and then go and see Tazikel. She was embarrassed as all get out about her breakdowns and what he had witnessed with the Hatching but she couldn’t deny how excited she was to see him again and really, really wanted to kiss that man again. She wondered if she was picking up Misharan’s coping mechanism of sex fixes everything but didn’t care. There was a lot to process from the Hatching and she would later. She had a guest to entertain since she was the one who invited Tazikel to Ista Weyr.

But first she gave Kordiavis a kiss to his cheek and stepped back, holding his hands for a moment. “You’re a good man. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. I’d hate to ruin the surprise for everyone else when they eventually find out.” She smiled and dashed off to try her luck at getting to Misharan to give him a hug and learn his new name—though he’d always be Mimi to her.

Dareji was emotionally exhausted.

The mood of the Hatching hadn’t been the usual mix of cheer and nerves but one of fear and even hatred. She hated that hatred! No one meant for the Flight to end like it did and like she kept telling everyone, they were learning from it which meant they could make changes and learn and grow.

She still believed that, now that everything was said and done. Yes, they learned a blue didn’t have the strongest whatevers—she wasn’t trained in that area—to make healthy and strong hatchlings, but it had still given three Candidates a chance at being dragonriders! It had also given the Healer Hall two, or three depending on what was in the unhatched egg, bodies to study and learn more about healing dragons and what went wrong that day. Dareji was kind of glad she loitered a bit closer to the gold pair and overheard Casa’s offering.

But she was still kind of in a state of shock over how it all played out. Thanks to being among the braver Candidates that stood closer to Thallyath, Dareji had seen the gold dragon’s anger up close and never wanted to see that on any dragon ever again. She nearly wet her panties! Luckily she hadn’t, but her eyes leaked a lot as she cried over the loss of the two greens and the dud and cried again but happier this time when Misharan, Madiquel, and then Beckitt Impressed. She was so happy for them but like the whispers around her, she worried a bit about how long they would be dragonriders.

She desperately wanted to go over and hug each one and tell them she was happy for them and everything would be okay and she would help wherever she could… but they were all busy tending to their little ones and so many much more skilled people were still flocking around them that Dareji didn’t want to be a hindrance. It was like the landslide all over again, wanting to help but being in the way. She was close to asking a Healer if she could run errands for him like she had back then but figured they had it all covered for the time being. She’d ask later if it seemed like it was needed.

Dareji spotted R’dare and R’dal sitting together in the stands with F’drel there as well. She smiled, loving how R’dal could so easily befriend anyone and get them to go along with his craziness. She waved at the men and smiled brighter to show she was okay after everything she had gone through again. Truthfully, it was the first time she had Stood since the Telgar massacre and it had taken a lot of soul searching to find the courage to do it again. Being a different Sands—though still stained with the memories of its own horrible Hatching—had helped. It was also a smaller clutch and she was doing it for Casa and Nerreh, not herself. That was the main reason why she was there, especially after the Touching that had been wave after wave of misery.

Now that her motivation to Stand was gone and the weight of the memories were returning, Dareji found herself needing fresh air and getting away from the madness. Waving once more to her brother to catch his eye, she pulled at her robe a bit and pointed to the exit to make it clear she was heading out to change. Maybe she’d catch up with them later. Maybe she’d hide in her bed for a bit first and spend time with the lingering ghosts in her memories of the past Hatchings. That did not at all sound healthy but it did help her find some peace with what she had witnessed and she always promised she’d keep moving forward. Maybe that was some sort of survivor’s guilt—Healers liked to throw fancy terms around she found—but it worked for her.

Katiryn had not enjoyed the Hatching thus far. Dead dragonets, Impressions to those that somehow stayed alive, an angry gold dragon… none of that made for a good time. She was starting to fear for Beckitt when Sariel seemed to be trying to egg him on in helping her with the remaining eggs. C’mon, Kitty… don’t give in. I need you to keep Standing with me. Remember the rules, which was rich coming from her when she did her best to bend them or skirt around them when no one was looking. But she really didn’t want to lose Beckitt on the Sands with her despite the other friends that were still Standing. Maybe she could get her dad to speak to M’ris if Beckitt did land in trouble to help get him out of it. She was pretty sure K’tir would try for her at least.

As she continued to will Beckitt from moving even as she plotted out a way to save his ass, Katiryn watched what was quite possibly the worst thing to ever happen—and she had seen girls die on two different Hatching Sands within the past year. She gasped, or maybe it was a squeak, with hands fluttering to cover her mouth to keep from making any further noise as she watched Beckitt Impress to a sickly blue. He was the third and for a clutch of six, Katiryn didn’t like the odds of survival.

Tears started silently falling as she watched another friend tend to his dragon. Normally it was such a joyous occasion and she loved watching the newly bonded pairs march off while slightly dazed at what happened but she didn’t feel any of that and no one was marching anywhere. If any flurry of activity existed, it was in Healers rushing around to check on their patients while preparing more meat or salves.

When it was clear the Hatching was officially over, Katiryn lingered a bit to see if she could sneak in and cheer on her friends but it became increasingly clear that wouldn’t happen as transport was arranged for moving the dragonets off to where they would be more thoroughly watched and tended to. She scuffed the toe of her boot in the sand, wondering what she should do next since celebrating still didn’t seem to be the reaction of choice.

Maybe she could help prepare food for the weyrlings—human or otherwise, but smashing up meat like that did not seem appealing and she could understand why her dad no longer ate red meat. She hadn’t even been that close to any of the feedings and the smell still wafted her way and she saw enough that her stomach churned and she had to look away. She wasn’t that skilled at cooking but it was an option and she needed to keep herself busy.

Maybe she’d gather up a change of clothes for each of them to have when they had a moment to get out of the ugly and rather itchy robes. She knew she desperately wanted to change. That seemed like the best starting point and she quickly ran over to one of the assistants to let them know her plan and to find out where she should bring the items. After that, maybe she could make a veggie platter for everyone. Then maybe find a friend for some much needed distraction from her thoughts.
