Month 05, 741 AL

North: Late Spring | South: Late Autumn
9.9 C to 18.4 C | 13.7 C to 24.5 C

Ista is heating up swiftly, and preparing for a rough summer - hopefully nothing like the one from a couple turns before with the wildfires! The rest of Northern Pern is warming upsomewhat slower, but with no less gusto as summer begins to creep into the sky, keeping the sun awake longer, warming the ledges of the weyrs. Rainstorms are sporadic, but keep the world well watered, despite the heat of the days.

The Red Star can be seen by those who choose to see it, causing no shortage of whispers that Thread will return - and just as much dismissal from those who do not believe. After all, it's been so long, surely it is no longer a threat! Weyrleaders are, regardless, beginning to put together wings in their Weyrs, if only to keep troublesome and bored riders busy.

Month 12, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Winter -3 - 2 C | 26 - 35 F
Fort is already home to snowfalls, though early in the month they fade away when the sun rises. As the month progresses, more snow stays on the ground, ending up with several feet of snow before the month is over. The areas around homes and populations has the snow shoveled away or trodden down. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove some danger and are routinely removed.

Ista Boundaries:
Winter, 9 - 21 C | 48 - 69 F
Generally warm enough to go about without a jacket on, Ista has low humidity but high chance of rain, generally in the form of vicious afternoon thunderstorms. The storms wash away any bite of heat the day had, and leave it feeling fresh for the night. The days are short, but grow bright quickly and the afternoons seem to be particularly short when heavy thunderstorms roll in and cover the sky.

Telgar Boundaries:
Winter, -5 - 0 C | 23 - 32 F
Bitterly cold, with icy winds constantly flowing down from the mountains. Freezing rain is almost constant; the sky always a murky grey and the ground slippery with slushy refrozen ice. The days are extremely short, with the nights dropping a good number below the daily average. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove a major danger, and are checked upon every day, with anything bigger than a fist being removed.

Month 07, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Summer 27 - 38 C | 80 - 100 F
Light breezes down from the mountains tot he North keep the temperature comfortable, even when the sun can bake an egg on the edge of a weyr. Sunburn is common.

Ista Boundaries:
Summer, 34 - 43 C | 93 - 110 F
A very dry, dusty heat. Little to no rain, causing more than some to worry about the drought not breaking and the rest of the Isle being at risk of fires. Many seek the depths of weyr, hold or hall during the midday and early afternoon heat.

Telgar Boundaries:
Summer, 26 - 35 C | 79 - 95 F
Muggy, sticky and generally just plain humid. Thunder storms are regular occurances, often happening in the early afternoon or evening, with heavy rainfall before drying off sometime in the night. Mornings are usually crisp, but warm up swiftly.

Month 04, 740 AL
North: Early Spring | South: Early Autumn
−1.9 C to 4.7 C | 20.0 C to 29.0

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself naturally warmer, (~10C / 50) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Katila is beginning to cool down to more reasonable temperature, but is no less muggy and uncomfortable to those who are not used to the seasons. It is still a good place to escape to when seeking a warm day or a nice swim at the lake, though.

Month 12, 739 AL
North: Early Winter| South: Early Summer
-3.1 to 2.1 C | 20.4 C to 29.4 C

Winter has come slowly to the Northern lands of Pern, with more rain and cold winds than snow. As the month progresses, more and more snow will fall, with frequent blizzard-like storms towards the very end of the month. Telgar and Fort will in particular become burried under mountains of snow, while Ista is sunjected to frequent icy rainstorms, and heavy winds coming in from across the ocean.

13.4 to 21.0 C | 13.8 C to 25.6 C

Following the disastrous fires (sometime in around the 28th of Month 08), Ista Isle has found itself suddenly in the midst of constant rain; not enough to flood, but a steady, dreary downfall that seems to only take a time out for a couple of hours here and there, before coming back again. Its cast the entire sooty Isle into a sombre and depressed mood. Alongside the rain, the weather is muggy and while not hot, is not particularly cool, either.

The rest of Northern Pern is getting their usual weather, though they, too, have been called to action following the wildfires that savaged Ista. Many individuals who called Ista Island home have been relocated not just to Ista Weyr, Ista Hold or Sea Cliff Hold, but also to other areas of Pern, whether with family or friends.

Month 08, 739 AL
North: Late Summer | South: Late Winter
17.4 to 25.5 C | 10.8 C to 23.2 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm - 37 to 45 C - has resulted in an incredibly dry summer, with little to no rain. This was climaxed by a dry thunderstorm, the results of which caused three fires to start across the Island on the 24.07.739 in the early morning hours. While the results of this are yet to be played out, the events will no doubt leave more than just the scarring of the land.

Month 07, 739 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter
18.0 to 26.6 C | 10.2 C to 21.9 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm, with average weather being in the 37 to 45 C range, making it now a more than slightly undesirable escape for the rest of the Northern population from the more enjoyable early summer weather. There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind. Ista's limited farmlands and fields are dry and dusty, with golden straw instead of grass where there is any growth at all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are still getting a lot of evening rain and the occasional thunderstorms, which cools down the populus and allows them to sleep easily without sweating their brains out like the Istans.

There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind.

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself uncommonly warm (~12C / 53.6) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Month 11, 738 AL
North: Late Autumn | South: Late Spring

Autumn is coming to an end, with the days slowly becoming shorter still, with early nights and late mornings. The temperature is getting very cool, with jackets being more required, but it has yet to actually snow. Despite this, it is often raining and miserable.

The Southern contient is in full bloom, with flowers coming to life in the grasses and on the trees. The skies are bright blue with fluffy clouds, and occassional sunshowers bringing a dampness to the day. The nights are still crisp, but not cold. The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 10, 738 AL
North: Mid Autumn | South: Mid Spring

Autumn is in full tilt, with the leaves a shocking array of orange and red, and more of them on the ground than on the trees. The skies are often a clear and crisp blue, with a cool breeze flowing, shifting the leaves and sending them scattering. Rain is not common, but when it does roll in the skies are dark like night come early, and thunderstorms are not uncommon, though they don't last for long and the amount of rain that falls isn't too heavy.

The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 09, 738 AL
North: Start Autumn | South: Start Spring

Nothern regions are entering into Autumn, with the trees beginning to change to their reds and oranges, while the air is beginning to feel more crips. There are still more warm days than cool, and the nights are mostly warm enough for light bedding still. Rain has faded away and most days are clear and bright.

The Southern contient finds itself heading into spring, with rain and flowers vying for attention. The ground is often muddy and squishy, while the skies are either bright and blue, or overcast wtih fluffy clouds.

Month 08, 738 AL
North: End Summer | South: End Winter

Summer is winding to an end in the Northern hemisphere, with the weather slowly cooling and the trees beginning to turn their leaves. The days are still long and bright, but the sun is beginning to lose some of its strength.

The coastal Weyrs are falling victim to coastal storms, strong winds and heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

The more inbound Weyrs and Holds find themselves drier, not getting nearly as much rain or storms, they find themselves on the end of a long drought.

Month 07, 738 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter

Summer is in full spring in the Nothern hemisphere, with the bulk of each day being unbearbly hot, followed by vicious thunderstorms and heavy humidity in the evenings and at night.

The coastal areas are experiencing monsoon like weather, and spend a lot of their time locked away in Hold, Hall or Weyr.

The more inner locations find themselves faced with more dry heat during the day, and horrible humidity in the evening and at night while the thunderstorms rage.

ITS AN UPDATE! HOORAH!

I'm not dead, my loves! This month's Event is 'Close Call!' - have fun! Stamps will be uploaded and on display in our Discord chatroom.

There is a topic here for discussion about Pernese religions and belief systems, including in and out of Weyr opinions (variably and as a whole) in regards to delicate matters, such as birth, death, and the afterlife. Also, ghosts anyone? Now I'm imagining a giant arse dragon ghost....

Healer Hall is accepting Gold Candidates (just from Fort, for now) and R'nya will soon be discussing with his Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn the merits of bringing in additional female candidates.... on the condition they are approved for Healer Apprenticeship...

Thallyath, Casa's little gold dragon, will be taking to the skies for her maiden flight in the first week of April (IC date will be 740-04-01) and while a mate is already decided, this clutch will be PC and more candidates are ALWAYS welcome, whether you want them to Impress this round --- or not!

September 2018

Spring is here! ... In Australia, anyway!

This month’s riveting event is ‘Seas of Fun’, in honour of International Pirate’s Day! After all the drama with the fires, we expect that taking to the sea (or lake, river, pond, etc) would be a very relaxing way to spend some downtime for many dragonriders and Holderfolk alike!

In preparation for October, the even is “Memories of the Past”, which we hope will be a fun way to explore your character’s past, either in solo posts or threads, as inner monolog or as back posting! How you choose to partake is entirely up to you!

October will also see our next PC HATCHING! In order to have your Candidate qualify for Impression, they must have no less than 20 posts! There are lots of characters floating around who would be more than happy to help your Candidate breech that count! Don’t forget to also UPDATE YOUR APPLICATIONS where applicable, or make sure it is submitted at all! We can’t Impress your character if we don’t know what they should be getting!

As always, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

If you haven't already, please drop by the Dragonrider Weyr Allocations thread, and let us know where your dragonriders call home. We are hoping to set up Wings across the three PC Weyrs over the next month or so, and your assistance is much appreciated! As a result, we will be looking for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and of course Candidates for the clutches we have scheduled for this year!

August 2018

ITS AUGUST! Do you know what that means? It means its less than 4 months until Christmas! OMG.

Okay. So moving on! This month sees us (hopefully) wrapping up the Camp Kink event! Who doesn’t love an abundance of young adults exploring their sexuality without restraint? Its been a hell of a fun ride (haha get it?) so far! Can’t wait to see what the grapevine makes of it when words gets out … haha!

On a more serious note, this month will see us engaging in the Istan Wildfires! This event is a free for all! Feel free to have your characters interact with the event in any way you feel is suitable! There is a lot of room here for personal dramas, trouble making, hero worshiping, etcetera! We really want to see how characters interact with, and dictate, the outcome of the event!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

July 2018

July was July-y.

June 2018

Welcome to the new month! Like always, I'm slack in getting the update up and running, but here it is! This month we have the event 'Summer Fling' - [Link] - which is turning out to be all kinds of entertaining already! Remember, it doesn't have to include smut! It could be an innocent date with some - *gasp* - hand holding!

This month also saw Gold Bedith of Mulrissa take to the skies! She was won by young Syrendryth of T'ryn! Congrats, and may your Hatching be less dramatic than the last one! The Hatching will take place in October so you have a lot of time to get Candidates created, approved, and posting up a storm!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

April 2018

Well, it’s halfway through the month which shows you how awful I am at keeping this stuff up to date, haha. Due to my slackness, there is no event this month, but the month of May will be hosting ’Lost Belongings’ wherein characters should find something they – or someone else – lost.

In the meantime, gold Okalinath of Kahleena has taken to the skies! You can find her Flight thread taking place on the 4th, here Currently, there is no planned winner, so be sure to throw your bronzes and browns her way! They do not need to be natives to Telgar Weyr to participate!

March 2018

Welcome to March, my friends!

Unfortunately, this month we don’t have any events set up, so we encourage you to wrap up threads and create some personal plots! Next month will be bringing in a new monthly event (Lost Belongings!) so you can always set your character up for that! If you have ideas for future Events, you can submit them here!. Additionally, you can see upcoming events here!

Speaking of new threads, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

January 2018

Welcome to the New Year, one and all! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday season, and we can't wait to see what your characters will get up to over the next twelve months (and beyond!). The Secret Santa Event has been extended until the 30th of January, so for those of you (like me!) who were busy over the end of December, we hope you can get your threads up and running over the next few weeks! There has been a lot of interesting interactions so far! As we extended the SSE, there won't be a specific January event this month! Don't worry though, we have something up our sleeve for February!

With the end of December, our Christmas layout has gone back into hiding! You'll be able to use it again at the end of the year, when Christmas again rolls around. You can expect a new layout for the site in the near future.

December 2017

And so it is December! Can’t believe how fast this year is flying by! At any rate, we have LOTS of fun for you this month! For starters, why don’t you sign up for our Secret Santa Event! Pairs will be assigned on the 14th! You can sign your character(s) up as a Giver, a Receiver or Both! We also hope that you enjoy our Christmas layout, which will be available for use for the entire month of December! After that, it will go into hiding until next Christmas!

We will also be awarding the HORRIFYING MOMENTS stamps to those who qualified for them, as well as the WORDS OF THE MONTH for November. We hope you enjoyed these Events, and you can expect more of them in the upcoming year!

This month we will also be focusing on the RP Records, and request you submit all your threads here so we can update the Timeline! As it says in the thread, the Timeline will be updated every month, in the first week. To help us maintain, be sure to submit your threads as soon as you open them!

November 2017

Welcome to November! We'd love it if you would take the time to Vote in our Horrifying Moments threads! We will also be awarding Stamps for people who vote, not just those who took part! We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we did! You can see the Stamps that will be awarded in the Horrifying Moment's thread.

This month we are doing a 'Words of the Month' event! You can choose your word/s as indicated in the thread, and may particpate with as many characters as you desire! This contest has no voting to earn stamps; you get a stamp just for participating! Enjoy!

October 2017

Welcome to October! As part of our Halloween celebrations, the Horrifying Moments event is now open! You may START a thread at any point during the month of October to qualify it for the event! We hope you have a lot of fun with this event, and we look forward to reading your threads! Don't forget to "Like" the threads you enjoy most, so we can award someone the MOST HORRIFYING stamp! Stamps will be revealed later in the month!

September 2017

Welcome to September! This month, we're working on our Awards for the site! We are also advertising avidly! Please welcome any guests or new members with all that warm charm we know you all posess! That said, we are still seeking Affiliates, so if you're here to drop an ad, please consider us!

Our next PC Clutch will be in the new year, so now is the pefect time to join with old candidates (how many clutches have they stood for now?!) and candidate hopefuls! Get those eager young men and women out there and grow them so we can match them with their perfect lifemate when the new year rolls around and one of our lovely golds throws a clutch on the Sands -- At this point in time, the Weyrs are sharing Candidates, so your Candidate can be Searched by any Weyr, and transfer to the one holding the PC clutch!

August 2017

We are officially open for our relaunch, and are excited to meet and greet new RPers! We're currently looking for all types of characters, including Weyrleaders and goldriders! But we also have lots of room for green and blueriders, weyrfolk, candidates, and all types of Hall folk, such as Masters, Journeymen and Apprentices. If you have any questions, feel free to hit us up in the Cbox or Discord chats, which can be found on the lower part of the screen.

July 2017

We are currently having an event to Create Adoptables! And encourage everyone to take part!

History is almost complete, and the profile has been re-coded. All new characters will need to go onto the new profile, but all old can keep their current! We'll begin advertising properly over the next couple of weeks, once the history has been completed, and probably after the weekend of the 8th and 9th, because that is when ThistleProse is having her birthday.

June 2017

We are on the brink of relaunching! Our history is being rewritten and cleaned up! We are accepting new members, and old! Our advertisment has been re-written, and will be put out there soon. We are also accepting affiliates of all descriptions, genres and themes! If you would like to affiliate with us, please go here
We officially have two layouts! You can post here with any issues you find, or request any changes!

May 2017

Progress has slowed down a little, due to RL events (yay promotions! Boo no internet!) but we're getting back on track! Documents are still being written and we've put together a FAQs page, though its likely to recieve a lot of adjustments as we come across things. The current goal is to have everything set up and ready by July, but we'll see how well we go at that. And by we, I mean ThistleProse. lol.

April 2017

The layout is almost complete, but there is still a lot of work to be done; documents are being written up and can be found in the Site Map menu opion. Players can begin to move their characters' information to their Account Profiles, but be aware some changes may still be made and/or added.
If you find any bugs or issues, plese repot them here, and we will do our best to fix them in a timely manner.

Casa? Thallyath’s voice was a quiet whisper against Casa’s mind, and she paused where she was drawing on her latest map, finishing with the line and focusing instead on her grumpy dragon. The gold felt off, had felt off ever since the clutching, and Casa didn’t know how to handle her. It wasn’t like Thallyath was inviting her to share in whatever was upsetting her. Before Casa could form a coherent set of thoughts in answer to her dragon, Thallyath continued. It’s time,. She didn’t sound at all happy about it, though, and Casa frowned as she set down her quill and stood up. There was no humming, and Thallyath was radiating discontent across their bond.

It didn’t take Casa long to get down onto the Sands, though she walked quietly and without rush, so as not to alert anyone else. Primarily, because she got the distinct impression that Thallyath wasn’t ready to let everyone know the Hatching was imminent. Slipping into the Hatching Grounds without being noticed, Casa made her way over to Thallyath, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she went. Not having expected visitors -- or a Hatching -- Casa was dressed in her lazy day cotton pants and a loose shirt, her hair pulled up messily.

“Are you sure?” Casa asked Thallyath, moving onto the Sands and stepping over the tip of her dragon’s tail to peer at the eggs. She walked around them, noting but not commenting on the way that Thallyath had set them out. The gold was off to one side of them, staring at the couple that were close to her, but thoroughly ignoring the couple on the outskirts. Casa could tell that at least one of them hadn't been rotated in several days, and she pointed to it without word, frowning up at her dragon.

Forget it, the little gold said, giving the egg in question a look of dismissal, though Casa felt the dispar the death of the egg caused her dragon, and she sighed sadly, moving over to Thallyath and stroking her neck soothingly. She followed Thallyath’s line of sight, and watched one of the eggs wriggle, moving so heavily that it toppled itself over, and Casa lifted her eyebrows. “Aren’t you going to hum?” She asked, looking up at her dragon. “Call the troops? You know. All that baby welcoming stuff?”

No, the dragon sighed, shifting so she could knock another egg over, sending it rolling awkwardly towards the one Casa had pointed at earlier. They’re not right, Casa. There is something wrong with them, and they shouldn’t Impress. Casa studied her dragon for several moments, frowning at her. “So, you are just going to let them all go between?” Casa asked, watching as another egg twitched. My preference was to drop them between, but Mizeath won’t let me. Thallyath’s tone was irritated, but resigned. Casa sighed, too, and gave Thallyath a gentle pat on the neck.

“Whelp, my dear, we have no choice. These babies are going to Hatch, and I’m pretty sure Mizeath will bite your head off if you let them do so without any Candidates to attach themselves to.” Casa paused, turning to look meaningfully up at her dragon. “Trust me, love, I’m not really thrilled about this either. The Touching was horrific and if it has any indication on this… I don’t even know. But… We have to do our bit, and we’ll clean up the mess afterwards, okay?”

Thallyath lowered her head, and let Casa hug her for a few moments, before lifting it and loosing a bellow, letting the dragons in the Weyr know the Hatching was about to begin, that the babies were ready to make their stand. Despite her invitation -- and she could hear the Weyrlingmaster’s dragon issuing orders to the remaining candidates -- Thallyath didn’t hum, but stood up stoically and moved away from the eggs, casting one last look at them before settling herself down and wrapping her tail around herself, the end flicking like that of an angry feline. Casa sighed, wringing her hands uncomfortably before lifting her chin and standing beside her dragon. She wasn’t dressed for a Hatching, but she also wasn’t willing to leave Thallyath alone.

Okay! Candidates can move straight out to stand around the eggs and the Hatching will begin in the next post!

Active Candidates:
- Will have been told to wear shoes! Sturdy shoes to save their feet.
- Be in Candidate robes that more or less fit them
- Will have hair pulled back in a pony-tail or a braid. In addition, they will be jewellery, belt, sash, or anything ‘extra’, free.
- Thallayth doesn’t approve of Firelizards, so they are not to come onto the Sands.

Inactive Candidates:
Those that did the Touching, but don’t wish to actively stand, are required to sit with the Healers along the edge of the Sands. They’re to stay out of the way, but be available if a dragonet comes to them.

On honorifics – it is SP canon that the dragon picks the honorific. They might pick something their rider likes, something they do not, or whatever. They will usually pluck the name from their rider’s mind, so it is likely that said rider will like their name, or have ‘pre picked’ it on some level subconsciously prior to Impression.

Once Impressed, please move through the following:
- Move dragonet to the sidelines and feed it
- Slap oil on any particularly dry spots
- Head to the Barracks to get some rest. Emotions are exhausting.

PC Impressee’s will have their dragonet posted on their Candidate Application! This will let you see your baby before anyone else!

Remember: NO SPOILERS. If you want to talk spoilers, keep it to the appropriate channel in the Discord!!

Like all the other Candidates, Mylorah was more or less confined to the inner workings of the Weyr and not allowed to wander too far off like the beach with the Hatching looming and likely to happen at any day now. That didn't bother her too much since she loved socializing and either hung out in the common room with other Candidates to keep their spirits up or she went visiting riders in their weyrs.

She was currently visiting one of those rider friends when Thallyath called out, startling them both. Once it became clear why she was being so vocal this time, Mylorah squealed with delight, kissed her friend on the cheek and dashed out the door to get ready. She had to make a quick stop to see T'ryn on the way, making sure he both knew and kept his promise. It was somewhat depressing knowing that her barging in without warning wouldn't interrupt anything that left her brother too much on display--she really needed to find him a girlfriend and needed to talk to Madiquel about other potential Healer girls.

"T'ryn! The Hatching is starting! Don't forget you promised to pick up Tazicurls! Er... Tazikel," she had to think a moment on his real name thanks to using the nickname she gave him all the time. She had invited him during the night together at the Gather since he seemed so interested in Weyr life. She started to regret that invitation after the Touching but he had seemed so excited to be asked that instead of sending a letter telling him not to come, she had instead verified that he was still interested in coming and to be ready around this time and her brother would pick him up.

"Thank you, I love you!" Mylorah blew him a kiss as she ran back out to continue her trek down to her little shared room where she found her roommates getting ready as well. It didn't take long to shuck one dress and toss on the unflattering--thankfully Tazikel already knew she wasn't shaped like a sack--robe and then pull her hair up in a pony tail.

Upon entering the Grounds, Mylorah frowned when she saw Thallyath looking utterly depressed and Casa equally so. Her friend hadn't even changed into something more presentable which would probably annoy M'ris but everything about Casa annoyed him and maybe he'd like her casual wear better than the cute dresses she was often in. Oh how she wished she could go over and hug Casa! Mylorah knew a lot of their friends would want to check on Casa but she also knew none of them wanted to risk angering Thallyath for any reason; she wondered if Nerreh or Faxxonth would even be allowed near the gold pair.

Instead, Mylorah worked her way around the little clutch to a spot where a few others were already waiting and whisper-shouted Casa's name to grab her attention. She gave a little smile and made a heart with her hands to give her silent support to her friend.

Kordiavis had spent the days after the Touching debating whether he wanted to actively Stand or not. He couldn't fully get out of it because he had touched one of those scrambled eggs but they had been given the option to stand further away so they weren't front line Candidates but still close enough that a dragonet could find them if they were meant to.

Why did he even bother with such a small clutch that was sired by a blue? It was disgraceful and his mother had ranted about how she never would have let that happen and neither would the other golds of the Before Times. That was almost enough to make him Stand right in front of the cursed eggs and throw himself in front of any that hatched. But he was tired of being contrary and doing things she didn't want.

He wasn't even going to let the disappointment Mylorah and Misharan would have in him sway him, as tough as that would be to face later on. Actually, it was already tough as he walked in and saw Mylorah up front and focusing on Casa. Mylorah was a gem and even though she had been just as shaken as the rest of them, she still stood there like it was any other Hatching so she could support her friend. Too bad Casa wasn't someone he cared to know and he was pretty indifferent on Nerreh. And perhaps it was his snobbery from his ex-goldrider mother or being raised in Ista Hold, but Kordiavis was really not impressed by a blue siring a clutch.

He did, however, feel a bit bad for Thallyath and even Casa as he watched them while walking across the sands to where the clutch was. They didn't ask for this and while it was easy to say a tiny gold should have flown better and that Thallyath's attitude shouldn't have been so negative around the eggs, even he couldn't fully assign blame to them.

But he couldn't actively support them either as he made his way over to the designated zone for those that realised too late they made a horrible mistake and still had to suffer through a potential Impression to a nightmare.

Narinoa was ashamed to admit he threw up when he was told the Hatching was starting. Thankfully it wasn't right there on someone's shoes but he did feel his stomach drop and dashed to the nearest bucket where he huddled over it and lost his lunch. He gave weak smiles as some teased him but he barely registered the words, focused too much on what was coming up and what might happen.

He had been suffering nightmares since the mauling at Ista's infamous Hatching and then the one at Fort only made them worse. So many people had been mauled or died around him and he was expected to continue Standing there egg after egg, Hatching after Hatching. It was getting harder to do so and he only found a full night's rest when he went to Casa for some of her special brew. That stuff was glorious. He already loved sex and the drug heightened the sensations and then left him crashing into a dreamless sleep even with only a small dose that lasted a couple of hours.

He went through the motions of changing and pulling his hair back as he focused on his breathing and reminding himself that there were only six eggs and while the ones he touched hadn't been the most pleasant of experiences, that was all in his head. How much damage could six dragonets do? What were the chances one would even want him?

Besides, no matter how afraid he was, the compassion and love he had for animals was stronger. How many times had he been thrown from a horse when he lived on the farm but convinced himself to try again? He did so because he didn't blame the horse for reacting naturally to being startled and he couldn't really blame the dragonets for being afraid, alone, and miserable when they were shut off from everything, including their mother's love. Narinoa was convinced that Thallyath didn't want to kill the Candidates that day of the Touching but her clutch. She knew something was wrong with them and that worried him a bit but he still wanted to be there to encourage the little feisty ones.

That mental talk helped settle his stomach, as did the fresh air on the walk to the Sands where he saw a good group of people already there. He wasn't surprised by how small the class had become but he was surprised by the spectators arriving. Part of him wondered how many were there in actual support and how many were there for a show and a chance to yell 'told you so' when things went wrong.

He spotted Casa with her dragon and his heart ached further. The dragonets weren't the only ones suffering; the parents of the clutch and their riders were as well. He didn't know Nerreh that well and only knew Casa in the bedroom--though they did talk about horses and what it was like raising them once which had been fun--but none of them deserved the pain they felt and the hatred they received because dragons did what was natural to them.

So he did what was natural to him in that moment and walked over to an empty spot around the eggs. He was still nervous and even scared about what could come from the eggs, but his optimism still survived enough to leave him hoping everything turned out fine and he even found a smile when anyone glanced in his direction.

If M'ris was being honest, he wished Mizeath hadn't stopped Thallyath from destroying her clutch. They would undoubtedly be abominations with a blue siring them and from what he heard from the Touching. The eggs were filled with negative emotions of despair, death, emptiness... not baby dragons. Was that Thallyath's influence from her own anger at Faxxonth or was it from the blue's essence? He was not smart enough to figure that one out but it did encourage him to discard the entire Touching business in the future. However, that was one battle he wasn't ready to fight with the stubborn traditionalists. They let him have the girls on the Sands for every clutch but he had a feeling the precious act of Touching the eggs would never end no matter how much logic he brought into it. One hundred people could touch a single egg and the one that didn't would be the one to Impress the dragon within. He supposed it at least let them know a bit about personality--which in this case was not reassuring.

He somehow wanted to blame it all on Casa, knowing that would make him feel a bit better, but it wasn't the girl's fault. She had done well for controlling Thallyath during their maiden Flight and he was even Impressed at her standing up to her dragon and doing her best to calm Thallyath down at the Touching. The fact that she couldn't manage it was a bit disappointing, but she kept her head enough to call for Mizeath and that was impressive. Not that it changed his overall impression of her. Although he did need to thank Lord Azrin for getting Blondie to actually read and try to learn something.

As was becoming a tradition of his own, M'ris tried to arrive as soon as he could upon the announcement the eggs were moving. He knew it could be a long wait but as Weyrleader, he felt it only right that he was there to welcome all visitors to his Weyr whether Mosiath has sired the clutch or not. He was surprised to find some people had beat him there, some of his own dragonriders that were likely just bored. Still, he went around to each of them to ask how they were doing and gauge their vibe toward the Hatching.

His own mood was souring every time he glanced at the little clutch. He saw the way the eggs were laid out and how at least one of them seemed to have been left alone for a while with the way the sand was around it. Thallyath's own mood didn't bode well either and M'ris knew that at least one of those eggs had to be a dud and his heart sank. He didn't know what to expect since no one could find any mention of a blue siring a clutch before now and now he wondered if they would all end up duds or if any hatched, if they would be malformed and between before Impressing. Was the line of a blue too weak to properly reproduce? Again, he wasn't sure but he found himself hoping some hatched well for the sake of the pairs involved.

Just because he wasn't impressed by what had happened--because of course it had to be at Ista like all the drama--M'ris didn't want them all to die.

Weren't you just wishing that they had all been taken care of before?

Even I can change my mind, Mo. Not even Blondie deserves the vitriol that's been flying her way. Nor Nerreh. Blues like to join the chase sometimes for fun. Who knew one would win? Although he really wished Nerreh had better control over Faxxonth. Then again, the young age meant they hadn't been taught such things and no one was prepared for that class to start chasing with such dedication that they would beat older dragons.

Are you going to tell Casa that you punished some of the men that were talking bad about her and Thallyath? Mosiath settled in on his preferred ledge that had a good view of the clutch, Thallyath, and the stands. He and Mizeath liked to be seen as much as they liked watching over what was theirs and could step in if needed.

M'ris chuckled to himself as he found his own seat while he waited for more to arrive. No. She wouldn't thank me for it anyway. Besides, we both have our views of each other, no need to ruin that. He hadn't done it for Casa specifically anyway. He would have punished any dragonrider that didn't show a gold and her rider proper respect. They helped keep the dragon population going and that, if nothing else, was worthy of respect and deserved shutting down gossip and rude remarks.

The Hatching begins. Syrendryth pointed out from his ledge, though he was in the shaded section instead of out in the sun. It was a hot afternoon and he wanted to enjoy the light breeze their weyr caught without burning to a crisp.

"I take it from the way you aren't moving or even humming that you don't care and don't plan on going?" T'ryn wasn't surprised given the animosity between Syrendryth and Thallyath though he still couldn't figure out why beyond the usual 'they aren't good enough for us' argument. A little elaboration wouldn't hurt!

When he didn't get a reply, T'ryn sighed and moved from where he was doing his own paperwork--an updated family tree for N'mor that had Z'rin and Zararin on it--to where he stored their riding gear. "Too bad for you, because we have to pick up a special Lord for Mylorah. I don't care if you enter the Grounds or not after that." He wished his stubborn dragon would but wouldn't fuss about it.

He had just finished putting on his boots when Mylorah burst in to remind him about Tazikel, and he barely got out a laugh before she was gone again. His flirty sister definitely had a crush. She had asked him to pick up this second son of Tillek a few weeks earlier and T'ryn had asked around to find someone that had been there before to give Syrendryth a hand in this task. Once achieved, they had done a few practice jumps there since, especially since Tillek was a nice Hold and T'ryn was drawn to their ocean view and the serenity it brought.

With them both geared up, they headed off to Tillek where he had the delightful time of trying to get someone to track down Tazikel for the Hatching he was invited to. T'ryn was pretty sure he was purposely being given the run around either because someone didn't like dragonriders or because they were stalling to give the Lord time to get ready. In the end he really didn't have to wait that long before a man with curls appeared and given Mylorah's name for the man, T'ryn felt he found the man and could see why she liked him by appearance at least.

Having safely brought the second son of Tillek to Ista Weyr, T'ryn relaxed a bit and waved Syrendryth off to do his own thing, though he'd have to keep the straps on until later. "This way. I'll show you to the stands and you can sit with me if you'd like. I'm not sure who else is coming from the Holds. But I won't mind the company or explaining anything if you haven't been to one before. And I won't be offended if a friend shows up and you want to sit with them instead."

T'ryn guided them to the stands, finding a spot near the front and waved when he made eye contact with Casa. He had been in her shoes a turn ago and wondered if she was as nervous as he had been. Maybe more so given the drama surrounding the Flight and Touching. He'd done his best in distracting her from it by offering help with the maps and even starting up a game of pictionary one evening that ended in a lot of laughing at their art skills. Now, he wanted to go give her a hug or just hold her hand during the whole thing to offer her some support but Thallyath would likely bite him in half if he dared get that close to them right then.

It’s time. L’gan looked up from where he was helping in the infirmary--why waste the skills of a healer just waiting around for a week--and frowned slightly. His normally bubbly green sounded so upset. She loved babies--dragon, human, or beast alike--and she had been upset to hear about the touching. She’d been apprehensive about this Hatching the whole week, her tail constantly flicking in irritation. Alright, love. Tell them we’ll be right there.

He apologized and called over someone else to finish tending the patient, going to wash up and quadruple-check his kit. He’d already arranged for bandages to be brought to the sands, baskets placed just outside in the hall if Thallyath wouldn’t let them be brought in until the hatching began. Large enough for dragonets and small enough for candidates, but he hoped desperately they wouldn’t need either. He had Semath ask a weyrling to fetch water and soapsand from the kitchens for washing hands and asked one of the helpers in the infirmary to bring distilled alcohol for cleaning wounds; Faranth’s Egg, please let them not need any of this, he thought. Not for this hatching.

Making his way to the hatching grounds he found that he was among the first arrivals. A few candidates were already here, though one or two looked green around the gills at the prospect. He gave them a reassuring smile and set his kit down. “All right there?” He gently asked one of the young men who had come to stand near the healers; available but not actively standing.

He was heartened to see Mylorah attempt to cheer up her friends, excited despite the touching. All too aware how perceptions could affect outcomes, he did his best to project confidence and reassurance. L’gan could feel Semath wanting to hum as well to welcome the babies, but she waited for cues from the other dragons assembling, not wanting to upset Thallyath further. They settled in to wait and he sent up another silent prayer for a smooth hatching.

Beckitt had thrown himself into exercise and chores over the past weeks and spent time with his friends from other Weyrs who had remained. Catching up with R’dal the other day had been an unexpected surprise, and had helped ease his mind. He was playing cards with a couple other Candidates in the common room when the Weyrlingmaster’s announcement rang out. He tossed his utterly rubbish hand on the top of the pile and scrambled up. “Come on, then,” Beckitt said with a smile, rushing off to get ready.

Ruefully he exchanged his soft shirt and pants for the coarse robe. Washing his face he took a moment to use some water and a comb to pull his hair back out of his eyes as best he could. It was just barely long enough for a short ponytail, but hopefully good enough. He sat on the edge of his bed and yanked on thick shoes to help keep the heat of the sands at bay. Nutmeg flew a few excited circles around his head as he tied the laces, then ‘helpfully’ landed on his back with a chirp, startling a laugh out of Beckitt. “Sorry, buddy, not this time.” He reached around and managed to pull the brown firelizard off despite protests. “Remember, Thallyath doesn’t like firelizards. You have to wait here, or go sunning with Spice and the others.” The flit chittered in mock agitation, then popped off between to go find others to wait with.

He saw Mylorah leaving her dorm around the same time and went over, giving her hand a squeeze. “Good luck,” he said with a bright smile as the walked to the grounds. He walked up to take his place, head high. There was a pall over the proceedings and Thallyath looked positively depressed rather than proud, and he looked over the eggs; one stood apart from the others and clearly hadn’t moved yet, a second lay knocked on its side nearby. Was it possible two wouldn’t hatch? For such a small clutch that would be absolutely devastating, he thought.

He caught sight of Kordiavis and gave him a small smile, which faltered as the candidate went to go stand with the healers. He’d hoped Kordiavis would actually stand with them, but he had taken the experience of the touching quite hard. Still, it was heartening when Narinoa, who had experienced such a terrifying moment he had run from the sands, stepped up to join them. He gave the former beastcrafter a smile as well which widened when it was returned. Beckitt also gave Casa a wave when Mylo called over to her. It wasn’t her fault. And even if Thallyath didn’t like her clutch, she wasn’t actively screaming over or threatening them like last time. Here’s hoping that lasts, he thought.

Sariel was quick on her feet and with her clothes which went from Healer to Candidate as fast as possible. Her hair had been intricately braided up for her Healing rounds that she'd just been let from. The six eggs the gold had laid were hatching and despite the Touching that had rattled her, she'd touched all of them.

Now, she Stood for them. The more Candidates who came, the better it would be for the dragonets. Their dam looked about as pleased as she had at the touching, sad and discontent. Sariel let out a long breath as she stepped onto the hot sands to join the Candidates who'd gathered. Her eyes found L'gan's and some of the tension in her frame eased. She might need her quick reflexes today but she turned her gaze to the six eggs, silently cheering them on with all the positive she could manage. It was foolish, perhaps, to send out her love and acceptance but she did it anyway.

They deserved lifemates, all of them.

Despite Thallyath's radiating aura of displeasure, there was going to be a Hatching and if she was going to hum, Sariel would. It was no mighty dragon hum, but she hummed all the same.

Her eggs are hatching now, my love, shall we go? the sunny colored gold told her from the ledge just outside. "I suppose," she called out and handed her Eris off to the drudge with expressed instructions to take her to the creche. When asked about Rislan, Ameris merely shook her head. She could not keep her son from hatchings. He had to learn about them before he stood for one. You should have let her take care of them, Ameris continued quietly to the dragon she called her own.

She was of a mind with M'ris, the clutch should not have ever been but what could she do? What could they do when Mizeath declared them dragons just the same? The touching had been terrible, terrifying and outrageous. Mizeath should have smashed them then. Should we smash every egg, now, that we do not like? Mizeath ask Ameris as the woman sat herself and Rislan on the gold's back to make their way to the hatching sands.

The gold had a point.

Mizeath settled into her usual spot, watching with swiftly whirling eyes as her girl and the boy made their way towards M'ris. What would the clutch sired by a blue portent? Ameris was not the most suspicious type, in fact she really wasn't, her mind far too practical for the ramblings of suspicion but even here and now, she could feel the tendrils of it. Do not be foolish, Mizeath laughed at her, You are as bad as the holders! Finally Ameris' eyes twinkled with good humor as she slid into the seat next to M'ris and gave the man a brilliant smile. Nothing had been missed, the eggs hadn't cracked yet and there were no bumbling babies on the sands.

"Everything will be fine," she told M'ris as she let her eyes drift over his strong face before turning them to the sands. Everything would be fine. There was no choice now. No avenue they could take. Nothing they could do to change what would come. Ameris could feel those fingers of suspicion snagging and snagging. "Everything will be fine," she repeated and didn't know who she was trying to convince.

I really wish you hadn't stopped her.

Rhaedalyn had a love-hate relationship with Hatchings, whether they were Aradissicath's or not. She loved seeing the joy on faces when they found their lifemate and usually recalled how she felt when Aradissicath found her. Hatchings were a cause for celebration! They brought new dragons into the world and gave people the purpose they had always been searching for but didn't know what it was until that moment.

But they were also horrifying and oftentimes bloody. Aradissicath liked to brag her babies were well-behaved and would never cause a scene, but that wasn't entirely true. An excited hatchling would always appear and end up accidentally scratching someone but in comparison to some other more recent Hatchings.... yes, her babies were the definition of perfect and serene. So much blood, carnage, death... She didn't know any of those that lost their lives since girls only Stood at Fort for a gold egg and they hadn't had one in quite a while, but that didn't mean the loss hurt her any less.

The fact that Candidates continued to Stand after what they witnessed up close, or even experienced themselves, was so inspirational to Rhaedalyn. She likely wouldn't have had that courage back then, too afraid something might happen to her or even a friend. Maybe that was why Aradissicath had found her when she did, before temperaments started changing and maybe that was why she was a goldrider. She had found a stiffer backbone over the years as Weyrwoman but she knew she didn't have what it took to be on a fighter dragon and the girls that were now landing on green and blue were equally as impressive and inspirational.

Despite all the devastation of some previous Hatchings and despite the drama surrounding a blue winning the Flight, Rhaedalyn couldn't miss Thallyath's first Hatching. She would politely and hesitantly admit she was worried about a blue siring the clutch but that was because it wasn't heard of before and the extremely small size was also a little worrisome, but both parents were small as well. None of that was cause for concern... though the Touching was. Some of their Candidates had returned home, having not gone through with the ritual after seeing their classmates' reactions. She made herself available for anyone that wanted to talk but her mind kept drifting to what Casa was going through.

She adored the younger goldrider. It probably shocked a lot of people to hear that, especially given what the girl liked to do in her spare time--at least from what rumours said, anyway. Truthfully, Rhaedalyn saw a lot of herself in Casa. No one took Casa seriously and wrote her off as a dumb blonde and that was how she had been treated all through out her time at Katila, even after becoming Weyrwoman, she still had people believe she didn't do anything and couldn't form a thought. But Rhaedalyn knew Casa was a lot smarter than she let on and, like herself, let people believe it.

So if for no other reason, Rhaedalyn went to Ista to support Casa. She probably felt so alone and like a failure and that couldn't continue. So as soon as word came, she left R'nya to do his shuttling of everyone he promised rides to and dashed off to Ista first, wanting to get there early enough that she could sneak in a quick word.

Aradissicath entered the Grounds quietly yet she was still hard to ignore with her size and regal presence--that appeared after she tripped on her landing and stumbled a little. Her clumsy girl; she'd never grown out of her awkwardness and Rhaedalyn loved her for that. Be gentle with her, she needs a friend, not a scolding. Rhaedalyn warned with an affectionate pat to Aradissicath's neck before sliding down and heading toward the gold pair herself. She didn't know if the golds would speak that day, but if they did, she didn't want any arguments.

"Greeting, ladies," she called out when she was a respectful distance from the pair. She didn't want to get too close since it wasn't her Sands or clutch, and Thallyath didn't seem quite herself. "I wanted to invite you both over to Fort some afternoon when you're free. Just the four of us being girls and doing what we want." She hesitated, trying to find the right words to express what she was feeling without being too sappy or coming across wrong.

Finally, she just blurted it out, "and no matter what happens... Dissi and I believe in you both. You've been incredibly strong and we'll continue to support you and count you as friends." She didn't want to overstep further and fell silent, giving Casa a chance to speak before eventually making her way to the stands to wait for R'nya to arrive.

"Aaahh!" R'dal called out when the news of Ista's Hatching reached him. "What if we're late?" He had been down at Healer Hall to see if Madiquel was free for a visit. He didn't think to plan ahead and see if she had classes or anything, just a spur of the moment visit like he usually did with her and all friends no matter where they lived. That's where he was when word came trickling down about the cursed clutch was about to hatch. He frowned, then realised what they meant and dashed back to where Edath had been left to sun in a field, his mission to find Madiquel forgotten. She'd likely want to go to the Hatching as well but R'nya seemed to be her official escort anymore, though he couldn't blame Jajojin for cracking down on the care of his daughter.

But the Hatching! "Aaahh!" He said again as he scrambled up Edath's side, completely convinced the news was super old and they were missing everything. It didn't matter that most eggs took forever to actually crack once they started rocking but it was such a small clutch that maybe they'd be done before everyone arrived! He didn't want to be that person! Two of his friends were the riders of the parents and he had other friends Standing. What if they Impressed and he wasn't there to see it? How horrible of a friend would he be?

When they arrived in Ista, R'dal was further convinced they missed it since it was oddly quiet. No, some hum. Not all, and not Thallyath, Edath sounded as confused and sad as he felt. R'dal strained to listen as Edath glided down to Halomirth's ledge and when they were closer, he could finally catch the humming, weak and spread out. Not all the dragons were humming and that broke his heart. What did they know that he didn't?

What he did know was that F'drel was clearly still at home and that wouldn't do! It was why they went to his weyr instead of right to the Sands. Halomirth greeted them with her usual enthusiasm and between the two of them, they got F'drel to agree to go--though R'dal secretly believed the greenrider would have still gone without him there to pester him. It was a Hatching, after all! You couldn't miss one of those!

R'dal grabbed F'drel's hand once they were inside the Grounds and practically dragged the man over to where he saw R'dare sitting, claiming the seats beside him. This was so exciting! Sure, a little scary from what he heard happened at the Touching but so many of his friends were a part of this! He called out to each one he saw to smile brightly and wave at them, sometimes giving thumbs up for encouragement. He couldn't wait to see them all afterwards, some hopefully with dragonets!

When the bellow--not humming--announced the Hatching was beginning, R'vi was torn. The fact that Thallyath wasn't humming was already reason enough not to go. If the gold wasn't into the idea of people being there or caring if the eggs hatched or not, why should he go? It still somewhat angered him that a blue had won and had managed to sire a clutch as well. Blues weren't meant to do that! It wasn't their place in the grand scheme of things and some weyrling decided to upset the balance. He knew his fierce stance on the topic surprised everyone that knew anything about him. He was shallow, not the smartest--that was clearly N'vian--and just the chill party dude that didn't let anything bother him. But this bothered him.

The clutch was suffering from the union as well. It was small, Thallyath was angry and bitter, Casa was stressed, the eggs seemed to be full of rage and despair...nothing was good about this. He had a bad feeling about the Hatching and didn't want to witness it. But he wouldn't be a good friend to the friends expecting to see him and even the Candidates that he chatted with or introduced to all the joys of sex would be disappointed if he wasn't there.

But he didn't want to show support to a bluerider that didn't know her...his...place. He didn't know anything about Nerreh, not even gender apparently given what Casa was saying after the Flight. Nerreh was a Katila brat but R'vi was about ten years older than most of them so he was in a different circle and having different sort of parties to what they were having back then. He only knew that Faxxonth overreached his place and they were all going to suffer for it. Not even blueriders, everyone. This Hatching was doomed though he really hoped it wasn't and he was just being negative for no reason.

"What do I do, Vy?" R'vi finally asked for his dragon's input from where he was sprawled on his bed, head hanging over the foot of the bed.

Go to the Hatching. It's not about supporting the blue in this moment since that would have been done after the Flight and you have been vocal about being against it. This is about supporting your friends that are Standing and even Casa, though you two don't really do much talking when you're together.

"I don't do much talking with anyone when I'm with them, Vy," R'vi snorted, knowing perfectly well that he was more just a fuck boy than someone that one wanted to spend an evening conversing with. "But you're right. Let's go."

He purposely didn't look at the Candidates or eggs when they entered but when R'vi claimed his seat, he scanned the area and frowned at the small number actively Standing by the eggs. He knew them all in one way or another and nodded or smiled in greeting any time he caught someone's eye but the bad feeling was settling into his gut again. Casa and Thallyath looked like they were waiting at someone's death bed as well and that didn't help matters.

Z'rin was relieved when N'mor said he was going to the Hatching. A part of him wondered if his mate would go given he and Casa didn't like each other and that whole bluerider winning thing. A lot of bronzeriders and some brownriders had been offended by a blue winning, though he personally wasn't for or against it. It wasn't like it was going to spark an uprising and blueriders were suddenly going to take over the Weyrs. It was likely a fluke brought on by the small size of the gold and blue in question and the element of surprise brought on by not only a blue catching up but a blue they all thought had been a green hours before.

He also didn't think going showed support for anything other than the Candidates potentially bonding to a dragon. N'mor seemed to agree with that so when the call came announcing it was beginning, they took their time getting ready, knowing there was no rush. Even if the eggs suddenly started cracking, it wouldn't take long to hop on their dragons and be there to see it.

Considering the call came while they were busy breaking in the new linen he had purchased that morning after taking Aldra to Tillek for some lordly business or another, Z'rin suggested a bath. A hands to themselves bath, he amended as they made their way to the bathing rooms, laughing.

When they were finally ready to go, the Hatching still hadn't begun and Z'rin only suffered a mild heart attack when he thought he had forgotten to get Lord Ista. Thankfully, upon hearing the clutch was small and would a smaller with little fanfare surrounding it, he had decided not to attend so Z'rin was off the hook for potentially being late.

Upon entering, they saw a small crowd already in the stands along with the Candidates around the eggs and the Healers on the sidelines. He waved to L'gan and Eb'zer, two Healers he adored as they kept him company in the infirmary when he was bed bound during the fires and N'mor was off tending to them. They were good people and Z'rin entertained the idea of, well, entertaining them at some point by hosting a dinner but he hadn't run the idea by N'mor yet and after L'gan's Flight, he was hesitant to do so, despite their open rules.

He scanned the area trying to find a place to sit, spotting R'vi first but also seeing his friend seemed miserable. That likely meant he was still sour about Faxxonth winning and was only there for the Impressions. Not good company, then. Then he saw T'ryn had a couple of seats open beside him and Z'rin nudged N'mor in that direction. "R'vi looks like sour grapes, so let's go sit with T'ryn and his pretty boy friend." He had no idea who the friend was but he seemed important and Z'rin was in a curious mood.

"Stay," he told the bronze as Tigger tried valiantly to join him. The little firelizard had no desire to do that and Dandi knew that Thallyath did not want the firelizards on the sands while her eggs were there. It was polite and respectful to leave Tigger here when the current gold didn't like him. He shifted and grabbed what he needed, slipping the robes on and the thick leather sandals. Out the door he went, Tigger scattering his indignation at being left behind. Dandi would have a mess to clean up when he got back from the hatching.

It was odd that the entire weyr was not humming and Dandior frowned as he entered the sands. He had opted not to touch the eggs when it was offered and he'd heard the stories. Heard what the others had dealt when they had. It made him glad he'd changed his mind about touching them. He'd stand for them - what candidate wouldn't? - but Dandior wasn't sure if he truly wanted to impress a hatchling from this clutch. What if they were cursed? He'd never heard of a blue catching a gold before and that couldn't be good. The entire clutch was probably going to be horrific little monsters.

He settled into the circle of candidates as they waited for the first cracking of the eggs.

Nerreh really hoped that once the eggs hatched everyone would pointedly ignore this whole affair and pretend it never happened. They probably wouldn’t, and Nerreh would never be free of this, but he could hope. Because it had gotten unbearable since the Touching. Nerreh spent as little time as possible in public areas of the Weyr, intentionally going to meals at odd hours to avoid running into people. They still went to Weyrling classes, but once they were dismissed for the day Nerreh and Faxxonth went flying, as far from the Weyr as they were allowed to go. Probably farther, but the Weyrlingmaster didn’t seem inclined to bother them about it, which Nerreh appreciated about the man.

They hadn’t actually been at the Weyr when the eggs started to hatch. Nerreh hadn’t been able to sleep, and neither had Faxx, and even before it was properly light out they left the Weyr for another aimless flight. This time they had flown all the way to the farthest point of the island Ista was on. Sea Cliff Hold was there, though Faxxonth had landed on the cliffs nearby and neither of them had gone near the Hold itself. After brooding on the cliffs for a while in the sea air, the pair headed back to the Weyr.

It took until they were almost back to their own weyr before either of them picked up on the lackluster humming. Faxxonth almost froze mid-air, dropping several feet in surprise before backwinging furiously when he heard it, immediately filled with dread. He wasn’t ready for this, he wasn’t, he wanted to fly back to the cliffs are the far side of the island and live there for the rest of forever. They had seen a few caves, it was totally doable. The whole Hold had been built into the cliffs, after all. But no, Thallyath had made it abundantly clear that since all this was his fault, both of them had to be there.

Nerreh didn’t hear the humming at the same time, only picking up on it after Faxx had recovered from his shock. “What the fuck, Faxx?” he asked, clutching tightly onto Faxxonth’s neck, “Don’t you dare fly the entire island just to crash right outside our weyr. What’s going - oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. Fuck.” She had picked up on the humming now, pathetic as it was, and the weird feeling that seemed to permeate the Weyr.

“Well, at least it’s almost over, right?” Nerreh said darkly, not really expecting whatever happened that day to be forgotten quickly. Faxxonth moaned in response, not anticipating the rest of the day’s trials in the slightest. “C’mon, kiddo, let’s go. Someone’s surely seen us by now, can’t just fuck off anymore.” Faxxonth sighed, before turning and slowly bringing them both to the Sands.

He landed as far from Thallyath as he could manage while still being on the Sands, eyeing her nervously the entire time, searching for any sign that she was going to head in his direction. Nerreh slid off his dragon, giving Faxx a reassuring hug around his neck before cautiously crossing the Sands towards Casa. Faxxonth sat stiffly, wings pulled in tight in an attempt to be as small and unthreatening as possible.

“Sorry,” Nerreh said as she approached Casa, moving to stand near the goldrider but a little behind - supporting her, but not making any show of authority at all. He wasn’t even sure what he was apologizing for - being late, the whole situation, existing, whatever. Didn’t matter. Nerreh was sorry for all of it. Looking around, Nerreh saw all the displeased faces of just about everyone. Everyone that mattered, anyway. M’ris and Ameris, just about every bronze or brownrider who deigned to show up, and even most of the blues. She did she her mother, and her grandfather and his mate - the men waved when they saw Nerreh looking at them. Her siblings weren’t present, though, both seemed to have been left behind in Telgar. Nerreh’s cousin N’ser was there, stony-faced but he gave her a small nod when their eyes met. N’ser’s father wasn’t there though, her uncle N’yal. Nerreh humphed quietly, unsurprised. Her uncle always had been an ass.

With all the negativity, all the negativity aimed at him and Faxxonth, specifically, Nerreh had expected to spend the whole Hatching feeling sick and full of shame. But something in all those faces was making Nerreh angry. Fuck them. Fuck all these people. It wasn’t their fault, Faxx hadn’t done anything wrong. Nerreh hadn’t done anything wrong. Blues chased golds all the time - Nerreh spent turns in Telgar, after all, and anyone could see Veeth participate in every gold Flight the Weyr had - so no one could get mad about Faxx doing it. It’s not like he was the only blue who’d chased Thallyath, either. Plenty of the blueriders who gave Nerreh the most shit had dragons who’d flown for Thallyath too. Faxx wasn’t even trying to catch her! He’d just wanted to show off a little, make sure everyone knew he was blue now, he was young, he’d wanted to have fun. Honestly, Faxx hadn’t even been a full turn old, he’d gotten caught up in everything and when Thallyath challenged all her pursuers to catch her he’d listened because dragons were supposed to do what golds said, after all. It wasn’t Faxxonth’s fault all the bronzes and browns didn’t fucking try or were snooty pricks who thought Thallyath was beneath them or some shit. Fuck them. Fuck all of them.

This Hatching was going to be an absolute fucking disaster but Nerreh was done with being in the wrong here.

Things were looking bright and sunny once again in the life of R'nd. He still didn't want to think too much on how easily B'jin could be swayed into believing rumours about him. What that said about the trust he had in him? After so many years of being together and not straying outside of odd Flight games their dragons played, he almost lost B'jin. That had rattled R'nd and reminded him about why he didn't stick around long enough to form deep attachments because everyone always left him in the end. But it worked out, that was the important part.

And one of his kids was Standing! Now that he knew about Mylorah, R'nd didn't want to miss any of the Hatchings she attended, wanting to show his support for her. She was still slow to trust him and his relatives and let them in--which he couldn't blame since he had the same tendencies--but he felt she'd appreciate seeing him there for her. When he had believed she was a friend or girlfriend of one of his sons, R'nd had been impressed by the way she stood her ground against dragonets, willing to protect others at the risk of injury to herself. Now that he knew she was his daughter, he was beyond proud of her.

And now a bit afraid for her. He had a feeling she'd be playing protector again if the rumours he had heard were close to the truth. He liked Casa from the times T'ryn would bring her to dinner and he had crossed paths with Nerreh a few times and liked him as well. They were good kids that got caught up in an awkward situation thanks to their dragons--something he knew all about. R'nd wasn't going to cast blame on anyone no matter what had or would happen.

As they arrived at Ista, Ayyonth tensed, not liking the atmosphere of the Weyr and it only grew worse as they approached the Sands. R'nd frowned at B'jin, knowing even his mate would notice the tension. Ayyonth wasn't really one to follow the crowd, and while he respected Thallyath both as a gold and clutch mother, he started humming. The little ones deserved a warmer welcome than they were getting.

R'nd affectionately patted Ayyonth when he noticed what the blue was doing. He was a pain in the ass most of the time, but still a good boy under it all. Once B'jin was on the ground, R'nd took his hand, giving it a light squeeze with a smile and escorted him over to the stands, finding seats behind their sons.

If he hadn’t been a stubborn bitch, especially when it came to his friends, Misharan may have considered sitting this Hatching out. He hated to admit it, because he stood for every Clutch, not even getting clawed had stopped him, but a small handful of hurting eggs almost had. And he hated it, because those eggs deserved good people standing for them, his friends deserved his support, but fuck if the thought of going back on those Sands didn’t make Misha feel sick. Part of him was anticipating Thallyath going on a rampage and becoming the first adult dragon to cause injury or death at a Hatching - that just seemed to be the sort of mood she was in. The Hatching was sure to be exciting, at least, even if absolutely everyone would rather be anywhere else.

However, since he was a stubborn bitch, Misharan got himself into the horrid Candidate robe and made his way to the Sands, smile on his face. No one seemed to be in a mood to laugh, and after trying half-heartedly a few times to get a friend to even giggle on the way over, Misha gave up, resigned to the overpowering blech that was the mood of the day. He wasn’t among the first there, as he hadn’t been in his borrowed room when the news went around, and then he’d dawdled over dressing, and by the time Misharan arrived at the Sands it was already obvious a lot of the Candidates would be sitting this one out on the sidelines. It didn’t surprise him to see Kordiavis among them; he’d been reluctant to Stand for this one in the first place, and after how he’d reacted to the eggs at the Touching, Misha hadn’t expected him to Stand after it had been announced they didn’t technically have to. Still. It would have been nice to have another friend at his back out there.

He adjusted his course so that he could swing past the growing cluster of not-Standing Candidates, stopping by Kordiavis just long enough to squeeze his shoulder - in reassurance and understanding, not blaming him for his choice to sit it out in the slightest (he’d been too close to the same, after all) - and flash an overly bright smile before letting go and moving out to the Sands proper. Misha found Mylorah and gave her a brief hug, then settled into a comfortable resting stance beside her, waiting for the inevitable shitshow to go down. Hopefully his luck would hold out and he’d make it through this one without anything marring his pretty face. Or something else important.

V'ler didn't want to go to the Hatching; yet he did want to go.

He hated travelling between despite it being eight years since his classmate had died during their first class learning it. It freaked him out and made him uncomfortable so he did it as little as possible, making him a bit of a homebody in the process. Still, he did go visit his daughters and Rhaedalyn about once a month and attended all Hatchings because he didn't trust other Harpers to record things properly.

But this Hatching sounded cursed from what he heard about the Touching and he already saw enough blood and gore at normal Hatchings which always left him queasy. Yet it intrigued him since he couldn't find any mentions of a blue winning a gold in the past. It didn't mean that it never had happened, maybe they lost records or it was purposely kept out of the records. It was his curiosity to see a clutch sired by a blue that was the driving factor in getting him to go.

Thankfully Indivara had her class she had to stay with, giving her a solid excuse not to go. They both knew she wasn't a fan of them anymore after her own mauling and the memories that came back whenever something horrible happened. V'ler knew he'd still have to tell her all about it when he returned, and he would without sugar-coating it, since she deserved honesty and he didn't want Indivara finding out details he left out through comments made at dinner.

I don't like it here. It's... sad... Veeth's voice was so tiny and soft, V'ler's heart hurt to hear it. His dragon was always happy and this wasn't him. He was actually prepared to deal with squealing at them getting to see babies and meeting the blue that won a gold; he didn't know how to handle a subdued Veeth. He wrapped his dragon up in his love, promising it was okay and everyone was just confused and nervous about what would come from the eggs since it was new to everyone.

That cheered Veeth up enough that he joined in the humming but he didn't go off to meet Faxxonth, thinking it best to wait until after the Hatching. He was probably focused on his clutch and didn't need distractions in the form of question after question. V'ler personally didn't think that was the case when he spotted a blue dragon matching the description he had heard was Faxxonth and saw the way the dragon seemed to do his best to shrink in on himself. He could only imagine the crap rider and dragon had been getting since the Flight and was glad Veeth always gave up on competing against the large bronzes after a while.

V'ler parted ways with his dragon so he could claim his usual spot when reporting on Hatchings in Ista. It had a great view of the clutch and he was close enough to where they would lead their dragonets off to feed that he could grab names as well.

A'tay saw daily what Nerreh and Faxxonth went through because they won a stupid Flight--the stupid Flight that he had sort of entered and ducked out of quick enough that no one really seemed to notice Xyxyth had been there at all. He had lucked out but his classmate hadn't and it angered him at how big of a deal some people were making it. Sure, blues weren't supposed to win golds but it had happened and they all just had to deal with it.

He hated to admit it, especially since they still had yet to graduate, but he threw around his bronze status as much as he could--at least with some of the younger riders and especially with his classmates. He didn't dare try telling off men that had been riding dragons longer than he'd been alive but he may have glared in their direction at times, hoping they saw it and worried if he'd remember them down the line when it would matter because he was older and had more power over them.

Otherwise, he offered silent support to Nerreh and hung out with the pair when he could. Xyxyth still liked Faxxonth despite learning he wasn't a she so if the blue pair wasn't in hiding, A'tay tried to hang out with Nerreh. It didn't hurt that Nerreh was friends with some of his siblings so he could get a bigger group together.

Now that the Hatching was finally upon them, A'tay was relieved. He hoped something resembling normal would return for Nerreh and Faxxonth but that all depended on the eggs. He was currently waiting on his (temporary, if he was serious about moving) ledge, watching the sky with Xyxyth for the return of their classmates. When they finally did arrive, A'tay could just imagine what was going through their heads when they realised what they had come back to. He smiled, though, when the pair went down to the Sands and he quickly jumped on Xyxyth to join them.

When he got there, he was surprised at the number in the stands and hoped that meant people supported it and weren't there to be jerks. As they had planned, Xyxyth went to stand by Faxxonth to show his continued support of clutch brother and friend and A'tay headed to the stands to sit in an empty seat by B'jin and R'nd. As he went, he purposely called out a greeting to Nerreh, smiling and waving in the process. He then greeted Casa as well since she was kind of a friend as well thanks to being friends with his older siblings and he didn't have anything against her or Thallyath either.

As he joined his family, A'tay sat straight and proud, ignoring any glares he may have been given for the show of support. It was honestly taking a lot of willpower to not shrink into himself or run away but Xyxyth had been good for his confidence--and being surrounded by two other bronzeriders, a Weyrlingmaster, and two blueriders that seemed to be adored by many helped a lot as well.

Casa resisted the urge to wrap her arms around herself and shiver, despite the hot sands beneath her feet, as the oppressive negativity grew around her. It wasn’t just those people that sneered at her (and Thallyath, and Faxxonth and Nerreh) for the situation, but the entirety of it -- from the way Thallyath was acting, to the way Faxxonth reacted. Casa felt sorry for the young blue, though she was careful not to actively think such things, less it set off Thallyath. She felt sorry for herself, too, but was trying really hard not to publicly display her distress, at least not too much.

Watching silently as people came, Casa returned nods and stiff smiles with those that sent them her way, and breathed a sigh of relief when Nerreh joined her. The bluerider’s apology was met with a grimace, Casa no more sure what it was in reference to than Nerreh; she was just glad to no longer be alone as she stood there. The number of Candidates that had chosen to sit on the sidelines, rather than participating, was depressing, but after the fiasco of the Touching and the way the eggs affected those that had Touched them, Casa was genuinely more surprised by the number that were still actively standing.

Doing her best to shake off her thoughts, Casa turned her gaze towards the Sands when a ripple of interest spread across the spectators and the Candidates; one of the eggs had finally managed to put a good crack in the shell, the sound echoing loudly in the almost silent grounds; Casa had never heard so much quiet with a crowd so large. It wasn’t natural, especially at a Hatching! They should be filled with joy, and excitement and anticipation not… dread.

Casa resisted cringing when she was pummeled with Thallyath’s shame as the shell broke away, and a tiny green dragonet poked her nose out. Casa frowned, recognising that something wasn’t right, but unable to quite put her finger on what until the little creature managed to slither out of the small hole she’d created. Casa’s features lost what colour was there, and a hand lifted to quietly hide her shocked mouth.

The little green dragon mewed hopelessly as she crumpled; the creature was horrifically emaciated. Incredibly small, even for a green, the little baby was naught more than a paper thin and sickly green hide stretched over delicate bones. Her eyes were sunkern and dull, and her head looked massive against the rest of her little body. She mewed once more, the sound a whimper of distress, barely loud enough to be heard -- and heard only because the Sands were so unnaturally quiet. Casa bit back the urge to cry, fighting for strength and dignity, as the little green (and really, she was only assuming it was green) gave a shuddering sigh, and went limp.

Leave it. Thallyath demanded quietly, her voice startling Casa so she flinched; the gold dragon didn’t so much as twitch, but the two Candidate that had moved towards the dead dragonet stopped in their tracks, and followed Thallayth’s gaze to another egg, which was toppling over itself, cracks forming in a rapid storm of motion over the shell…

Narinoa held his breath as one of the eggs started cracking and a little nose peeked through. He couldn’t tell the colour at first, not until the head was free but then it didn’t register as his beastcrafter training kicked in and he knew something wasn’t right about the hatchling. The way it slithered free had him concerned and he took a couple of steps forward without a care about the rules of the Sands in place for their safety. All he saw was a creature in need of assistance and he couldn’t stand by and let it suffer like that.

The whimpering cry broke his heart and it was what had him moving to assist the clearly malnourished dragonet. He didn’t think he was the mate to the poor dear since he didn’t even hear a soft whimper in his head but it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered but saving a life… until he was too slow to do anything. He was steps away when the shuddering sigh hit him and he watched in horror as the little green—he noticed now—went limp… lifeless.

He barely had time to register that before Thallyath’s demand startled him enough to take a step back and glance at the sound of another egg cracking. The sound didn’t hold his attention for long as he looked back at the dead hatchling that didn’t even have enough strength to go between on its own. He felt his stomach churning as he looked back at the egg that was likely about to hatch next and Narinoa couldn’t stop thinking about how it might share the same fate.

Semath had begun humming when some of the other dragons assembled, even though Thallyath didn’t hum herself. It wasn’t right for babies to come from their shells to silence, and how would they be encouraged to keep trying if no one was welcoming them. She shifted excitedly as a crack appeared on one shell, her tail swishing and her eyes swirling rainbow as a green nose popped up through the hole. Why was Thallyath so upset? A little green was so exciting; perhaps not as exciting as a bronze, but Semath loved all her green sisters and cousins.

When the poor little creature tumbled from her shell, Semath’s humming stopped abruptly. L’gan?! Her neck stretched as far as it could toward the baby, but she wasn’t silly enough to approach. L’gan can we do something? L’gan?

Tears rolled down his face as he watched the dragonet whimper and die. No, my dearest. it broke his heart to even think of it as a soft keen started in Semath’s throat. L’gan saw the candidates who had moved to help stop abruptly as Thallyath ordered them to leave it- leave her, he thought. She had been a green.

He felt more than saw the movement at his side as one of the candidates sitting by the edge move as if to leave the sands entirely. “Kordiavis,” he said quietly, gently grabbing the young man’s wrist. “Remember your training. Candidates must be on the sands if a dragonet needs them. I know it hurts, but we need to be there for them.”

Mylorah was nibbling on her lower lip and clinging onto Misharan’s hand when the first dragonet began its appearance. She wanted to have faith that everything would be fine for her friends but when that tiny head poked free, she knew it wouldn’t be. That wasn’t a healthy baby and it further proved the point with the way it could barely move and then stopped. She gasped and her free hand covered her mouth to keep from making any further noise. It was just so quiet and she didn’t want to be the one making noise.

And then she wasn’t as dragons started keening.

And then, just like when she touched an egg, she was back in the night of the landslide. Covered in mud, confused, scared, and all she could hear was dragons keening. So much keening. So many dead. Her mother, her brother, friends, a greenrider that was way too old to show interest in a young girl but she still had a crush on anyway…

“No… no, no, no, stop…” Mylorah was practically whimpering as she pleaded for the dragons to stop, hands going to her ears to help block out the noise that would never truly leave her mind. It was always there, lurking behind happy memories, waiting to jump out at her when she least expected it. Sometimes it still got her while she slept, turning a pleasant dream into a repeating scene she couldn’t escape. How many times did she have to watch them die?

She was crying by the time her knees buckled and she found herself sitting on the hot sand, barely registering the heat as she pressed her hands tighter to her ears. If anyone tried to comfort her or get her back to her feet, she didn’t notice, lost again in her world of pain.

It was only by luck that her wild unseeing eyes came to a rest at the stands and though it took a moment, she started to recognise their faces. T’ryn and A’tay both grown, not young or newly Impressed, and showing as much concern as their father. Her father, R’nd… right, he knew who she was now. N’mor, another cute boy she had a crush on long ago sitting with his mate and giving her a look that screamed he expected her to get up and be stronger. And Tazikel… oh Faranth! He had just seen her have a meltdown of epic proportions! If he still had any interest in her after their time at the Gather, she probably just killed it.

Taking a few deep breaths, Mylorah rose to her feet, taking a moment to dust any sand from her robe—as if that would make the thing more attractive. She offered the men sitting together a small smile to show she was fine, though she made sure not to look back at the little green that didn’t make it. The dragons had finished their mourning as well, aiding in her recovery as she watched the next egg cracking. This time, she didn’t hope for the best outcome, only that she held it together when the keening started again.

Despite the fear and anxiety surrounding the hatching, Beckitt felt his heart leap with that familiar rush of excitement as cracks began to form on one of the shells. Finally. R’dal was right, everything would be okay. The babies were fighting to be born, even now.

He couldn’t help a gasp as the skeletal form emerged from the shell. The tiny green moved as if every movement was agony, barely out of her shell before she cried and went limp. Beckitt flinched as the keening began, taking a step back from where he’d moved as if to help the dragonet. He wondered which egg that had been as he tried to shut out the terrible sadness the keening sent through his soul. He couldn’t - he wouldn’t - think about the last time he’d heard such misery.

But then Mylorah began to plead and sob, and his head whipped around to his friend as she fell to her knees. He scrambled to her side and threw his arms around her, rocking her gently. “Mylo, it’s okay. It’s okay. We aren’t in Katilia, we’re in Ista. It’s not happening again, we aren’t trapped. Mylo, you need to get up… Come on.” He helped her clamber to her feet, turning away from the dead dragonet and scanning faces for someone to help. Maybe one of the healers could give her something to help her calm down? Kitt didn’t know what to do.

But the sight of the faces in the stands seemed to help her snap out of it. He rested his head on hers for a moment, checking if she was alright, and holding her hand until she wanted to pull away as they heard another shell begin to crack. He shuddered and looked around at his friends, trying to put on a brave face, if only to try to welcome the poor creatures with a smile rather than sobs.

“Fuck this,” Kordiavis muttered aloud, not caring if anyone heard him. Yes, the death of the dragonet fresh from its shell was terrible and it did pain him to see it happen but he wished he hadn’t seen it. He wished he hadn’t Touched any of the eggs and he wished he had been smart enough to avoid the whole damned thing from the get go. He had let Mylorah and Misharan to a lesser extent—and only because he was still at Telgar for most of Mylorah’s badgering—talk him into Standing as a show of support or some bullshit and he had had enough of it.

He made to leave, not giving a damn about the rules based on a stupid tradition that didn’t even make sense to him. Maybe it was because he was more Holder than Weyr and didn’t see what was so special about the act. Besides, the eggs were all cursed and nothing about the entire Flight or what came of it was natural or normal.

When one of the Healers grabbed his wrist, Kordiavis flung around to face the man, free hand clenching into a fist. He didn’t throw the punch, though. He really wasn’t a fighter and would probably break one of his own bones while proving a point that didn’t even need violence. He had always found words were stronger and stung more than a slap. “There’s nothing to be here for,” he hissed back, far too aware of how voices travelled in the cavern though the keening did help muffle their conversation.

“If they don’t all die like that one did, they won’t last much longer and I will not Impress to one of those and end up like my crazy ex-goldrider mother!” Yes, that was a huge fear of his and he didn’t care that he had just shared it with some Healer that was now a rider because he stood too close to the eggs.

He shook his wrist free of L’gan’s hold and stared the man down for several seconds, not afraid of him or any consequences that came from his outburst. If nothing else, he knew Alcynnia would have her own fit and point out how no one should have been Standing for such a clutch and they should have been able to leave at any time because of it. And how would they punish him anyway? Not let him Stand for a while? Sounded good to him right then.

Still, when he turned away from L’gan, he only moved down the wall, coming to a rest at the very limit of what was considered an appropriate distance. He was still technically there but only because he wanted to make sure none of his friends Impressed to the abominations or ended up injured by one. As it was, he had missed how they all reacted to the death of the one that made him want to leave, but he was watching them now, a distant guardian standing defiantly with his arms crossed at his chest and a glare on the eggs.

It was heartbreaking to watch. The dragonet had fought so hard to break that shell only to die moments later. Why? Her eyes filled with tears that she, much like many attending this Hatching, couldn't keep at bay. The poor thing. She didn't want to leave the hatching and would staunchly Stand no matter what came their way. She loved them even if no one else did, even the little one that had done its best to hatch.

Sariel calmed herself with a slight shake and held herself together through the keening. She hoped for the clutch with as much love as she could, as she had done through the Touching and as she stood here, now. The ripple of dread, the quietness, the lack of welcoming from the dam. The way the sire seemed to shrink himself down to nothing. She would hope as much as she could and she wouldn't leave - even if the worst happened. Dragonriders were supposed to be courageous, brave, determined, and bold. She had seen time and again how riders could defy the odds when it came to survival.

She'd signed up for it, all of it, the joy and the sorrow.

When there was silence, she let out a hum to the sound of the second egg cracking. Sariel took two steps forward and hummed louder. Someone would welcome them, someone would greet them. Like a dragonrider, Sariel would do her duty and keep her mind open with all she had to offer each dragonet.

She glanced to find L'gan's face as she used her robe to wipe her eyes. Semath was out there too and she cast her thoughts toward the green with love and support. It was twice as difficult to watch as a dragon, she thought. The next egg working its way into hatching was a fascinating storm of cracks.

Please be alright. We're here for you, she thought, encompassing the rest of the eggs.

Perfect. Great. Absolutely fantastic start to a Hatching, Misha thought, heart sinking as the first dragonet appeared and fell still. Die without Impressing, boded well for all the rest of the eggs. If any more even fucking hatched, though as Misharan had the thought a second egg fell over, proving it at least at that moment held a living dragonet. Though who knew how long that would last, Misharan wondered, looking back at the unmoving dragonet and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. He couldn’t help trying to figure out which of the eggs it was based on his memories of the Touching - there were only six, and he’d touched them all, sort of, but Thallyath seemed to have rearranged them since then and they didn’t look different enough for him to be sure. There was one that felt like it was wasting away from lack of everything, and the emaciated little green brought that egg to mind. But really, it could be any of them.

Misharan opened his eyes back up, in time to see the egg rock again. It seemed a little more lively than the other one? That was good, right? Fuck, he didn’t know. He just hoped it survived. Though how long would it last even if lived long enough to Impress and - oh, fuck. What if some of the dragonets survived just long enough to Impress and then die within a day or two? That would be so much worse. Misharan didn’t want to Impress just for the dragon to die! How awful! He didn’t want that to happen to him, or to any of his friends. Maybe they should all just leave immediately and leave the dragonets to their inevitable fate.

Of course, just the thought made Misha feel sick with himself. Could he really just leave a baby to die alone because he didn’t want to get hurt? As it turned out, probably. But Misharan didn’t want to be the sort of person who left babies to die. Fuck. He hated this. Hated this. Misharan wanted the Hatching to get on with it so he could leave and probably hug all his friends and maybe cry for a while. A glance over at Mylorah revealed she’d already been crying. He hadn’t even noticed. It was like nothing around him was real anymore.

’Faranth, please just let this be over soon,’ he begged the world at large, closing his eyes again to try and see if everything would feel real again when he opened them.

L’gan didn’t flinch as the young man made a fist; he’d been punched before and likely would again. But the hit never came; at least, not a physical punch.

The healer blanched as the candidate gave voice to a very real fear; what if these dragonets impressed but didn’t survive? He looked over the terribly young faces of the assembled group and felt his stomach flip uncomfortably. He wished once again that he could have asked--begged--Sariel not to stand. He knew how selfish and hypocritical that was, but the thought of her clever mind driven into grieving madness terrified him. His grasp loosened and he felt Kordiavis pull free, but didn’t attempt to stop him again.

L’gan… another egg… He looked up, shaking his head slightly as if to dislodge the maudlin thoughts. His normally bubbly green had paled and her eyes whirled anxiously, unsure whether to welcome this baby as well. Go ahead and hum, sweetheart. We may as well welcome them with as much cheer as we can summon. Still unsure, Semath began to hum again, though quieter than before.

While it seemed to some as if the space between the first Hatchling appearing and the second might have seemed like forever, it was actually a very small period of time -- those who weren’t paying attention in a timely manner to the fact that the shell had cracked would be surprised when the next dragonet slithered free of his confines, the darkness of his hide obscuring his colour for several moments until he managed to pull himself to his feet, mewing pitifully, in pain; his joints feeling hard and dry and his skin too tightly pulled over his bones. Was life supposed to feel this awful?

Casa bit her lip, eyes wide, as the little baby found his feet and staggered into a standing position, legs splayed wide to help hold his weight up. Hatchlings were always awkward, but there was something heartwrenching about the way these ones were so clearly malnourished. Who would have thought that could happen? Casa reached back blindly, clinging to Nerreh’s hand tightly when the dragonet managed to move forward, his head barely held high enough to keep it out of the sand. But he was active, and his eyes - while sunkern and sad looking - sparkled with fierce colours. Casa decided he was determined, and she fidgeted anxiously.

Would he Impress? Would he survive? Oh, what he if Impressed and then died like that poor little green? Casa turned, tearing her eyes reluctantly from the dragonet for a moment to quickly wave forward a couple of attendants, who slipped forward (but not quite to the circle of Candidates) so they would be immediately available upon Impression for the new Weyrling to feed the dragonet.

Casa felt sick with anxiety, though, as the dragonet crept towards the candidates, mewing and stumbling, never quite falling but looking very much as if every movement he made, every step he took, was paining him greatly. The poor thing had to be so hungry, and his hide looked so grungy and Casa felt tears tumbling down her cheek as the little one Impressed, moaning softly in despair. She wanted to be happy for them - she really, really did! - but the horror of the little green dying, and the knowledge of what happened to people when they lost their dragon was too strong.

“No,” she whispered, only loud enough for Nerreh to hear if he tried, but no one else. Thallyath was unnaturally quiet as she watched the new bond, the assistants surging forward and giving the buckets of meat to the new Weyrling, while the Master Healer moved quickly, too. She really, really, really, hoped that the bond wouldn’t end in misery…
