T’ryn was actually pretty excited for the Telgar Gather. Everyone liked to tease him about being a hermit and antisocial and he kind of believed it himself but Gathers were fun and he could leave any time he wanted if he was overwhelmed or the good times stopped. Mostly, he was excited for this one because everyone was able to go. Madiquel was going, A’tay and his class were able to travel now, and all the usual suspects would be attending as well; like the two he was shuttling on his large bronze. It was a good thing Syrendryth was a big fellow or they’d be doing more back and forth than either would care for. As it was, Mylorah and Kordiavis were both able to get a ride with him, though Kordiavis bolted as soon as they touched down. If they teased him about being antisocial, what did they say to Kordiavis?

It was easy enough to find Madiquel as she spotted Syrendryth first and Clover came over to greet them and lead them over. T’ryn greeted the girl with his usual kiss to her forehead and returned the hug that made it seem like they hadn’t seen each other in turns when it had been maybe two weeks since his last visit. He adored her calming aura and the ease at which they could discuss anything and he knew the visits also made A’tay relax since he had his big brother’s word that she was okay and Madiquel wasn’t lying in any of her letters. Like the girl knew how to lie!

Then came the introductions to her Hall friends and T’ryn couldn’t stop from teasing her. “And here I thought you were making them all up since I never got to see any of them before now,” he laughed, finding that he liked being so comfortable around people again that he could joke and not want to slink away. It likely had to do with the fact that they didn’t know about all the drama in his life and only knew him as bronzerider T’ryn, Madiquel’s friend.

One of the friends seemed to keep stealing glances his way, or maybe to Mylorah. T’ryn knew she worried a bit about what she was wearing, though it was her nicest dress and one that he had bought her for her birthday since she never would treat herself so. He too looked at his sister and didn’t see anything amiss which then made him suddenly feel awkward. Was he the one drawing the attention? He didn’t think he was dressed oddly either and not so subtle ran his fingers through his hair to make sure he didn’t have helmet hair and felt it was fine. And now he found he was staring at Vaera in return.

And of course Mylorah saw it all as she snickered softly beside him. Faranth save him from older sisters!

Mylorah had barely landed and she was already having an amazing time! She got to see Madiquel whom she hadn’t seen in months and even then it was a short visit as she didn’t want to take away time from A’tay seeing her. She gave the younger girl a big hug and laughed as they were extremely girly with bouncing around, holding hands, and complimenting each other at the same time. She missed Madiquel so much! She was such a sweet and bright ray of sunshine that made Mylorah want to continue sheltering the girl from what was really out there in the world.

Then she was meeting Madiquel’s friends and Mylorah was silently judging each one to ensure they would continue to be good influences on their girl. They seemed to be good sorts, especially Vaera with her equally sweet smile and slight timidness—though that may have just been because she was overwhelmed by all the excitement, a large dragon, and apparently T’ryn’s existence.

She was a bit worried her dress was crooked or hair a mess when Vaera continued looking over at her and a small part of her wondered if maybe the cute Hall girl thought she was also cute. That was pretty unlikely given what she knew of the Halls and Holds. Besides, she was standing right beside T’ryn and the man was hot and drew the eye of a lot of women and some men wherever he went. She snickered under her breath when she realised T’ryn was staring at Vaera as well and a glance at Madiquel confirmed she had noticed the exchange as well. Mylorah grinned at Madiquel behind T’ryn’s back so neither of them saw their own little exchange that clearly screamed ‘we have got to hook these two up!’

She waited for the others with them to turn back to their seats where a little picnic was set up before she grabbed Vaera’s hand, smiling brightly at the girl. “Vaera! Come meet Syrendryth. T’ryn can even help you climb up him if you’d like. Right, brother?” Mylorah shot him the same smile as she grabbed his hand with her free one and practically skipped back over to where the bronze dragon was already lounging in the sun.

Going to the Gather was so very exciting. Vaera had never been to Telgar before, or ridden on a dragon, and she hadn’t been to that many Gathers, really, Fort didn’t have huge ones like this super often, and she was a little bit overwhelmed, though mostly in a good way. There was so much to do! It was so nice of Madiquel to invite her to the Gather and arrange for a ride, Vaera would never have been able to go otherwise. Her dad was there too, because it was good for him to go to these sorts of things, and maybe she could have tagged along but he didn’t like to show favoritism or anything and considered the Gather work, not fun, so wouldn’t really think of bringing her with him. He was a bit weird like that, but Vaera didn’t mind. She got a wonderful chance to have fun and meet new people instead.

It wasn’t long until Madiquel was introducing some of her Weyr friends, bronzerider T’ryn and Mylorah. Vaera recognized the names; Madiquel had mentioned them each a few times before. She knew T’ryn visited her at the Hall sometimes — Vaera had seen his immense bronze dragon before, but had never met him, or even really seen him — and that both T’ryn and Mylorah were older siblings of the frequently mentioned A’tay, Madiquel’s best friend. They both seemed very nice, both smiling and laughing a lot. Vaera could understand why Madiquel liked them.

Honestly, Vaera found how cool and put together they were to be kind of intimidating. T’ryn was funny and had a dragon, and from what Veara understood about dragons, mostly from things Madiquel had said, having a bronze dragon said good things about a person and was kind of prestige. And Mylorah was really pretty and her outfit was amazing and she just seemed so clever and Vaera really, really wanted to get her approval and maybe even be her friend. She kept glancing over at the older girl, paying attention to how she responded to what other people were saying. She wanted to say something clever that would make Mylorah laugh, or smile at her, but she couldn’t think of anything.

Eventually, at one point when she was looking at Mylorah again — she had been telling some story and tossed her hair over her shoulder and it was so graceful and Vaera wished she could do that — Vaera realized T’ryn was looking at her. Why was he looking at her? Had he noticed her looking at his sister? Did he think she was weird? Oh no, would he tell Mylorah she was weird and looking at her? Vaera blushed and looked away, trying very hard to focus on Madiquel, who had started talking about something that happened in one of her classes.

The group started moving from standing around chatting to where someone had set up a picnic, and Vaera was headed over to join them when Mylorah grabbed her hand and Vaera almost fainted. She felt warm all over, and mixed with the faintness she wondered if maybe she was dehydrated. Those were symptoms of dehydration, right? She'd definitely read about it, but she was forgetting all of it at that moment. Was that also a symptom? Maybe she just needed to drink some water and sit in the shade a bit and everything would be fine. But then Mylorah suggested she meet Syrendreth, and Vaera forgot all about drinking water.

“Oh, um, I’d love to meet him, if that’s alright with Syrendryth? I don't want to bother him,” she said, glancing between Syrendreth, who she really would like to meet, T’ryn, since it was his dragon she would be meeting, and Mylorah, since it had been her idea.

What just happened?

T’ryn’s head was spinning as he tried to keep up with the idea of going to enjoy a bite to eat with Madiquel and the others to Mylorah now dragging him and Vaera over to see Syrendryth. His sister knew how his dragon was, why did she think he’d be the perfect dragon to meet? And why only offer it to Vaera? She was up to something and he didn’t think he was awake enough for it.

“Um, sure? He’s not really social but he’s not going to bite either,” T’ryn winced at his own words, realising that maybe it wasn’t a good idea to joke about such things to someone that likely didn’t know much about dragons and was also in Healer Hall where they likely heard all about the horrible Hatchings of late. “I mean, dragons are friendly and some might grumble or make like they would, but they definitely wouldn’t.” Unless they were a rabid hatchling or if there rider was in mortal danger and needed defending, but again, that didn’t need to be pointed out.

Really? Do I look like a climbing apparatus here for their amusement? Your sister is falling rapidly down my list of people I tolerate, just so you’re aware. Syrendryth grumbled as he turned his head to watch their approach. T’ryn laughed nervously and offered an apology to the beast. You know how she is so you can hardly blame me. Besides, it’s not going to harm you to play nice for once. Aren’t you always saying we’re better than everyone? Show them how we treat Holders and how we can earn their respect and have them as allies for your grand scheme of running everything. T’ryn barely refrained from rolling his eyes as he bickered with the pain in his head, trying to appease the dragon that was sitting up and putting on a regal display.

T’ryn sighed, shaking his hand free of Mylorah’s and waved at the dragon. “This is Syrendryth. He’ll be six in two weeks and he’s one of the largest dragons currently. Which is kind of cool but also a pain when it comes time to bathe and oil him.” He wondered if he was supposed to brag about winning two out of the three Flights they had entered to show off how great Syrendryth was but T’ryn felt that was a bit too much information and a bit awkward. No doubt some riders would do it but that just wasn’t his thing.

He did, however, offer his hand to Vaera as Mylorah let go and gave her a little nudge to walk closer. “Here, I’ll show you where his favourite spot to be scratched is by the head knobs and help you up if you do want to sit atop him.” He glared at Mylorah when she suggested they go for a flight later, wondering why she was pushing so hard for him to spend time with Vaera. Yes she was cute and so far polite and probably very nice but he’d known her all of ten minutes. But as Syrendryth dutifully lowered his head to be used for demonstrations of the perfect scratches, T’ryn nodded and smiled anyway, not seeing the harm in it.

Vaera stared wide-eyed at Syrendryth, completely awestruck. For the first time since they’d arrived Vaera wasn’t surreptitiously glancing at Mylorah every few seconds, totally focused on the massive creature in front of her. She nodded at T’ryn, absolutely believing that Syrendryth was one of the biggest dragons on Pern. He was enormous, and being so close to him made Vaera feel tiny.

She instinctively took the hand offered to her and took a few steps closer, though she felt a slight pang of disappointment when Mylorah let go of her other hand and stepped back. It was mostly forgotten in the face of meeting such an amazing dragon. Vaera gave Syrendryth the best curtsy she could manage with one hand before addressing him.

“It’s an honor to meet you, Syrendryth. I’m Vaera. I’m terribly sorry if we’re bothering you,” she said politely, watching him for a reaction before looking over at T’ryn to confirm if she did okay. Dragon body language was unknown to her. She had no idea what Syrendryth might be thinking, and she didn’t want to offend him! He did move his head to where it could be reached, so Vaera supposed that was a good sign. She copied where and how T’ryn scratched Syrendryth’s head as exactly as she could, hoping she was doing it all right.

“Thank you, Syrendryth,” she told the dragon, a little breathless with how close she was to him. A bronze dragon had brought her to the Gather, the Fort Weyrleader’s Xyreith, but she hadn’t really met Xyreith. She’d greeted him politely, but she hadn’t gotten so close to his head. R’nya had helped her climb on and she’d clung in amazement to Madiquel the entire time, she didn’t really interact with the dragon. Meeting Syrendryth was different. “I apologize if we’re bothering you. I really don’t want to impose,” she blushed, glancing back over at T’ryn. “I don’t need to climb on him, and don’t need to go for a ride or anything. If he wants to go for a quick flight later and doesn't mind me tagging along, I would like to, but I don’t want to be any trouble.” Vaera turned back to focus completely on Syrendryth, scratching by his head knobs as best she could, completely absorbed in the task. Dragon hide was such a fascinating texture! And so warm!

I like her, Syrendryth announced, only to T’ryn as was his way, as he lowered to the ground to get more comfortable while the humans lavished him in attention with the perfect rubs to his favourite spot. T’ryn sighed again, because of course his dragon approved of a girl they hardly knew and he wasn’t sure he was interested. Yes, she was pretty and nice, but he didn’t know anything about her or if they would get along on more than ‘yeah, my dragon is amazing.’

“Seems like you’re not bothering him. He’s impressed with your manners and thoughtfulness,” T’ryn explained, knowing how much it sucked to be left out of a conversation that was clearly taking place and likely about the one left out. “He didn’t mention anything but we can check with him later if he wants to stretch his wings and take us for a ride. They’re a lot of fun when it’s a lazy flight and you can just watch the world go by.” They didn’t go nearly as often as they used to though they were both fond of the activity and sometimes found a quiet cliff to laze about on.

Mylorah silently watched the adorable and slightly awkward pair interact and smiled. It seemed to be going well, even though Syrendryth was more the focal point than each other. Then again, that was probably helping T’ryn from being a complete mess as he talked to a cute girl. He knew his dragon and it was a good way for him to focus on something other than the shared interest they had in each other and actually talk. If Madiquel couldn’t see the progress already being made from where she sat, Mylorah was definitely going to update her; like right now.

“All right, my darlings! As much as I love my brother, I don’t want to spend all day with him. I’m going to go see Madiquel for a few minutes and then explore the Gather.” Mylorah didn’t have any plans for the Gather itself, only knowing that friends would be around to find, new friends were going to be made, and she was going to have fun.

“I’m so happy to have met you, Vaera!” Mylorah announced as she flounced over to the girl and threw her arms around her in a hug. “I promise to catch up with you again sometime. If Madi likes you, I know you’re amazing and I want to know you better as well.”

Mylorah released the girl and took a moment to give her one final appraisal. Yep, she was cute, well put together, and obviously smart if she was in Healer Hall. T’ryn would love her—unless all of those things had to be wrapped up in a blonde package, but she hoped not. She had her own blonde addiction given a majority of her lovers but dark haired ladies definitely weren’t off her list and she’d smack her brother around if he took them off his. “Your outfit is so cute. The colour is perfect on you, don’t you think, T’ryn?” She almost laughed as T’ryn startled at being asked the question and, like a guy, stumbled through agreeing though he did blush a little as he quickly looked away. That was a start!

“You two have fun! See you later!” She waved as she skipped off, deciding to follow the sound of guitars off in the distance to check that out first.

She’d impressed a bronze dragon? Vaera blushed, pleased, and tried to make her scritches as perfect as possible. “I’m glad,” she said quietly, still blushing heavily. Dragons were so fascinating and one thought well of her? How cool.

Vaera startled a little when Mylorah started speaking. She’d been so distracted by Syrendryth and him having a positive opinion of her she’d mostly forgotten anyone else was there. Being called ‘darling’ by Mylorah, even in the plural as a general term of endearment kept her blush on her face. And then Mylorah said that she was happy to have met her, called her amazing, and said she wanted to know Vaera better and hugged her. Vaera felt faint again. Maybe she really should make sure she got some water and sat in the shade for a bit.

The compliment of her outfit had Vaera stammering out a thank you, sounding a little like T’ryn as he awkwardly agreed with his sister. Mylorah thought her outfit was cute. She was so happy, it really seemed like Mylorah liked her and was maybe interested in being her friend and Vaera wanted that so much her chest ached and her stomach fluttered nervously. Vaera watched Mylorah flounce off, still not fully having processed all of what just happened.

“Your sister's nice,” she said lamely, turning back to T’ryn, not really sure what else to say.

Well that happened.

T’ryn watched his sister skip away confused over the whirlwind good bye and amused at how she had said she’d go talk to Madiquel… and then didn’t. That was the most Mylorah thing Mylorah could do. He loved her but she was a bit scatter-brained sometimes. Sometimes? Syrendryth snorted but surprisingly didn’t add anything else. T’ryn suspected the sun was already making the dragon drowsy for his afternoon nap.

“Yeah, she is,” he agreed, just as lamely and gave an awkward little laugh as he reached up and rubbed the back of his neck. What now? They already talked about his dragon and Mylorah wasn’t there to keep the conversation flowing easily. He wasn’t good at meeting new people and still struggled with his attempts to talk to the goldriders, some he’d known for turns, when he was trying to be a good bronzerider and socialize like he was supposed to.

“She’s always like that,” he waved to where she had just been standing, as if that explained what he meant though it seemed obvious he meant everything about Mylorah. She was a whirlwind of energy, optimism, and a social butterfly. “If she’s not off to find cookies, she’s probably going to dance.” T’ryn wasn’t sure why talking about Mylorah seemed like a good idea but it was a subject he knew and Vaera had technically brought it up, didn’t she?

You are hopeless. Stop talking about your sister and ask Vaera about herself. The grumbling dragon lifted his head enough that he could look over the girl and stared at T’ryn in what he knew was the draconic version of a glare. He supposed it was a bit rude not to ask more about Vaera but what if she didn’t like sharing such things and he was just being rude for being nosy?

“So… when did you join Healer Hall? What’s it like?” He went to the Hall quite a bit to meet Madiquel but it wasn’t the same as actually attending the Hall. He mostly saw empty hallways and sometimes people bustling around while he waited for his young friend to join him so they could go for their usual walk together and sit in the field with Syrendryth.

Vaera nodded, completely believing that Mylorah had that sort of energy all the time. She got distracted for a moment picturing Mylorah dancing, like T'ryn said she was probably going to do. Mylorah was probably great at dancing. Mylorah was probably great at everything. Vaera was brought back to the present when T’ryn asked about her.

“Oh, um, well, I became an Apprentice about the same time as Madiquel, but I’ve been at the Hall much longer. Since I was four. We moved there because the Hall wanted my dad teaching classes there, which was easier if they took him off the roster of Healers who could be stationed elsewhere. So I don’t really remember ever not being at the Hall. It’s… I don’t know, it's home. I don’t have enough experience anywhere else to really compare.” Vaera shrugged, not really sure what else to say. She hadn't decided if she wanted to mention her father was the Masterhealer or not. Had Madiquel told her Weyr friends about that? Vaera didn't know, and she didn't want to sound like she was bragging when she wasn’t. That her father was the Masterhealer was just a fact, but still…

“How about you?” she asked, posing a question to T’ryn in return, “What do you think of the Hall? You’ve been there a few times visiting Madiquel, right? How’s it different from the Weyrs?”

Her dad was a Healer? He wondered how much pressure that put on Vaera and if she even really wanted to be a Healer. He could sort of relate to that given how many times over the turns he felt like people were comparing him to R’nd and if he’d be as friendly and flirty as Dad. T’ryn sometimes still wondered if he was disappointing people by being a boring bronzerider that barely even held hands with someone let alone slept with everyone that smiled at him.

“Oh, the Hall seems pretty cool. I want to say it’s not too different from the Weyrs but that’s not entirely true. The Hall seems much more… put together? Organized? Everyone seems to have a job or purpose at the Hall, but the Weyrs are still working on becoming a functional unit. I think one day we’ll be a sight to see with wings flying together and everyone with steady jobs and purpose.” A lot of people currently didn’t do anything or just floated around lending a hand when they wanted to or if it was really needed. It wasn’t horrible, but schedules would help a lot. “But I’m sure some of the rumours you’ve heard are true with us being more relaxed. I think even with wings and what not, we’ll still have a lot more freedom than Hall and Hold.”

Realising they were standing around somewhat awkwardly, T’ryn started to sit down on the ground to lean against Syrendryth’s side like he often did. But then he saw the pretty dress Mylorah had pointed out—and it did look nice on Vaera—and worried it would get dirty if she followed suit. So he stripped off his riding jacket he forgot he was still wearing and laid it on the ground beside where he was going to sit. “If you want to join me, that is. Sy’s a good place to rest against while chatting.” Syrendryth rumbled with what T’ryn took to be approval since he was still talking to the Dragon Approved girl and not messing it up too badly. Yet. They both knew there was still time since she was still with him.

“Unless you want to get back to your friends. That’s cool, too,” T’ryn quickly added, realising he may have been too forward with assuming she might want to keep talking to him. He could feel the sigh Syrendryth gave out as he settled back against the dragon’s side.

“I’m pretty sure the Hall only seems that way to you because everyone sees a dragon approaching and rushes to look busy,” Vaera said with a giggle. It wasn’t entirely true, and there were always some people who rushed out to see the dragon, but a lot of Healers were relatively used to a bit of chaos, especially those who responded to emergencies, so it didn’t take too long for everyone to go back to their business.

She blushed when T’ryn took his jacket off and spread it on the ground for her to sit on. That was kind of him. Her dress would have survived, the ground wasn’t muddy or anything, but the gesture was nice. Vaera nodded, carefully sitting down on T’ryn’s jacket, trying very hard not to scuff it on the ground.

“I’ll stay a little while,” Vaera said, slowly leaning back until her back touched Syrendryth’s side. She was casually leaning against a dragon! Her! Leaning against a dragon! For no real reason! But his bulk created shade, and the spot where T’ryn had sat was completely out of the sun. If she really was dehydrated or overheated, sitting in the shade for a few minutes would be good for her. “Thank you,” she said, smiling at T’ryn.

“You’re welcome,” T’ryn replied automatically but he wasn’t sure now if it was for the jacket or for giving her a choice to stay or go. Probably the jacket. Hopefully the jacket. Was it weird that he thought it’d be anything other than that? Yes. And stop obsessing over such odd things. T’ryn couldn’t argue with that. He did obsess over little things and odd things.

Ask her how she’s feeling. She seemed a bit flushed and woozy earlier. Not that you noticed. Why didn’t you notice that the nice and respectable girl wasn’t well? Syrendryth once again raised his head and glanced back at the pair and T’ryn felt the weight of his glare from that one eye taking them in. He really hadn’t noticed Vaera wasn’t well and looking at her now showed that maybe she was a bit under the weather—or ill from the weather.

“Are you feeling okay, Vaera? You seem a bit pale and I’m sorry I didn’t notice before. Would you like me to get you some water while you rest here in the shade?” Maybe she was dehydrated; it was hot out for a Telgar afternoon and too much sun could wear a person down. He started to get to his feet, intent on getting the water for her.

“Water would be nice, thank you,” Vaera blushed, nodding. It actually made her feel better that T’ryn offered water and suggested she rest in the shade; it supported her own conclusions that she was feeling off because of the weather. “I’m not usually outside for this long, I think it's getting to me a little.”

She was a little worried about being left alone with Syrendryth while T'ryn went to get her water, though. If she was dehydrated or faint from too much sun she really should stay where she was in the shade for a bit, but was it okay for her to be alone with someone’s dragon? Was there an etiquette around that sort of thing? Vaera had no idea, they had never been taught any of this at the Hall. If T’ryn was okay leaving her alone with Syrendryth it must be okay, but it was still a little awkward. Did she speak to him? Sit in silence? What was appropriate?

Once T’ryn had walked away in search of water, Vaera decided it was alright to at least thank the dragon for being her shade. That had to be acceptable, right? “Thank you for letting me sit with you, Syrendryth.” she said, looking in the direction of the dragon’s head. Vaera wanted to pat his side near where she was leaning but wasn’t sure if he would appreciate that. He liked scratches by his head knobs, but she hadn't been given permission to pet him where they were leaning and Vaera didn’t want to overstep her bounds.

Syrendryth watched T’ryn hurry off to get some water for Vaera, proud of his rider for looking after the girl’s well-being personally. This wasn’t the sort of task to delegate but for his own hands to show how much he cared. This could be a good match for him and he was warming up to Madiquel and Mylorah for making the match possible.

When Vaera thanked him for letting her sit with him, Syrendryth almost ignored her like he usually did with humans out of sheer habit. But he’d already deemed her worthy of T’ryn’s attention and so far she hadn’t proven herself to be ditzy, slutty, or someone to be ashamed of so he gently reached out to her mind, assuming a girl from a Hall had little to no contact with dragons bespeaking her. You are welcome. He wasn’t really one for idle chit chat and wasn’t sure what else to say so he left it at that.

After a few minutes, T’ryn returned with a large mug of water. He didn’t want to take it from Madiquel and her friends in case they had been in the sun too long as well so he jogged off to the nearest spot he could find with mugs and drinkable water before carefully jogging back with it. He knelt before Vaera, concern showing as he searched for signs that she was getting worse and handed the mug over. “Still doing okay? Sorry I took so long,” he paused, glancing at Syrendryth and back again, “hope the big guy wasn’t bothering you.” Not that T’ryn believed for one second that Syrendryth would speak to Vaera at all let alone pester her with questions or scare her away. He was more likely to ignore her existence despite seeming to like her somewhat.

Vaera had not thought that morning that she would be alone with a dragon — let alone a bronze dragon who was apparently one of the largest dragons on the entirety of Pern — and when she felt Syrendryth in her head she practically jumped. “Oh,” she said quietly, looking over towards Syrendryth’s head. She hadn’t imagined that, had she? A dragon had spoken to her? Vaera nodded at Syrendryth, wanting to say ‘thank you,’ again, but thinking saying thank you to a ‘you're welcome’ may come across as excessive. She smiled a little dazedly up at him, at this amazing dragon who had deemed her worthy of speaking to. There weren't a whole lot of stories Vaera could remember where dragons talked to Hold or Hall folk, and she hadn’t been entirely sure they could talk to them at all. Unless she was so affected by the heat she was hallucinating? Oh dear, that would be troublesome...

Thankfully, T’ryn returned quickly with a mug of water, and Vaera took it gratefully, smiling at him. “You didn't take long at all, please don't worry. And Syrendryth was a perfect gentleman,” she assured him, taking a few sips of the water.

“Do, uhm…” she started to ask, after she’d consumed about half the mug of water, “do dragons generally talk to people they're not bonded to?” Vaera knew they could, Madiquel had briefly referenced a dragon speaking to her once and Vaera had filed it away as another dragon fact she wanted to remember. So it was possible, but Madiquel was Weyrbred and Vaera wasn’t and she was also clearly not feeling well so maybe she’d made up Syrendryth talking to her but she wanted to get more information on the topic before she was ready to be completely sure one way or the other.

T’ryn doubted his dragon was a perfect gentleman and gave him a dubious glance before Vaera’s hesitation called for his full attention. Great, Syrendryth did do something while he was gone. Probably bared his teeth or thumped her with his tail. He was going to have to explain it was all show and just messing around because dragons wouldn’t actually eat…. What?

“Oh. Some do. You should hear some of the chattier greens. You can’t block them out no matter what you try. Like Grith, she was pretty much all of us brats’ baby-sitter growing up in Katila.” Those were some fun times, painting the little green and climbing all over her. “But it’s usually going to be greens and blues that talk to others. The other colours are snobs. So I’m sorry if you tried talking with Syrendryth and he ignored you. He ignores everyone but my friend N’mor, as far as I know.” T’ryn shot a glare at Syrendryth, annoyed that he had such a pretentious dragon that seemed to hate everyone, deeming that unworthy of either of them.

Still, he gave the dragon an affectionate pat to the side and T’ryn frowned when he felt Syrendryth rumbling with what he assumed was laughter. You did not hallucinate, Syrendryth had brushed against her mind long enough to pick up on her worries and tried to soothe them. Although his voice was apparently on the androgynous side and the poor girl probably still wouldn’t believe who was bespeaking her. He had also picked up on her confusion over emotions and now he wasn’t too sure if she was perfect for T’ryn or not, but he would try. Give T’ryn a chance. He is a good man. With that said, he withdrew from Vaera’s mind.

“Would you like me to walk you back over to your friends?” T’ryn offered his hand to help her up and to hang onto if she needed a little assistance walking. He didn’t want her to faint from the heat but wasn’t sure she would appreciate being carried either. A good compromise seemed to be offering his arm to hang onto. “You can stay sitting in Syrendryth’s shade if you prefer. I just thought you might want to spend time with your friends instead of me on your day away from the Hall.”

Utterly hopeless. Why did humans have to undo all the hard work their dragons did for them?

Vaera frowned a little at T’ryn's explanation. So dragons did talk to other people, but T’ryn said Syrendryth never did, which would mean he probably didn't talk to her, right? She startled a little as Syrendryth rumbled, feeling the sound from where she leaned against his side. Was that a good noise? Or an annoyed noise? Vaera was not well-versed enough in dragons to tell.

Then Syrendryth spoke to her again, and really she didn't feel so bad, especially after drinking water, that Vaera felt she would hallucinate a second and then third time. And he said she wasn't hallucinating, which for the time being she would believe. Even if what T'ryn said made it even more unbelievable. Syrendryth, who spoke to two people, speaking to a random Hall girl he just met? So strange. But he said she did not hallucinate, and he was sort of looking at her when he said it, so it really looked like he was talking to her.

And then he'd said to give T’ryn a chance, which Vaera didn't fully understand. She thought he was nice and introduced her to his dragon and brought her water when she was feeling a little off. Did Syrendryth think his rider wasn’t so good at making friends and was trying to help him in that regard? Was that what he meant? Try to befriend him? Vaera figured she could manage that, T’ryn was sweet, if a bit awkward, but so was she so she could hardly hold that against him. She would try at least, especially since Syrendryth had asked and she didn't mind at all.

“If you like,” Vaera said smiling gently, “but I don't need to spend all day with them. I see them all the time, after all. It would be more fun to make new friends, don’t you think?” she asked, shooting a quick glance over at Syrendryth to see if the bronze had any reactions that might let her know she was on the right track. Really, she liked T’ryn so far and Vaera could learn a lot about dragons and Weyrlife from talking to him. He seemed happy enough to talk about such things so far, at least.

T’ryn liked Vaera in the brief amount of time that he had known her but he didn’t want her to feel obligated to stay with him since everyone else had left. So he had tried to give her a polite way of ditching him without offending him since she seemed kind enough to worry about such things. When she didn’t take it and instead offered to stay and make a new friend, T’ryn actually smiled and nodded. “Yeah, you’re right.”

He settled back down beside Vaera leaning back against his dragon that seemed happier now that his rider wasn’t bolting off again. Better. Now you two take turns asking questions and telling stories. I am going to have a nap. Don’t mess this up. T’ryn gave a small crooked smile and shook his head slightly at his dragon’s words of advice. “Syrendryth is leaving me in your capable hands while he naps. So, do you have other questions about dragons?” That was a safe starting point and if they were going to talk for a while to become friends while he made sure she was recovering from the sun, they would have plenty of time to branch out.
