R’nd had never been a heavy drinker, with the rare exception that typically revolved around mourning or celebrating far too hard at the rare Hatchings back in the days of Katila Weyr. He preferred to sip and enjoy his glass and for a while he wondered why it was when so many around him chugged it back. Then, he realised it was likely due to his age and circumstance for getting to Katila. He had been Searched at twelve and not long after, he was going into exile with his Searchrider, R’jit. Alcohol wasn’t exactly growing on trees—not much was, truth be told—so he never acquired a taste for it early in life and when Katila came around, wine was either poorly made or of a good quality that demanded respect. It took a while to grow accustomed to the taste and when he did find he enjoyed it, R’nd made sure it lasted and he savoured it.

Now, however, was not one of those times where he nursed a glass for an hour while B’jin worked his way through the rest of the bottle. That was probably something R’nd should be concerned about, but B’jin enjoyed it, didn’t hurt anyone, and it didn’t turn him into another man on either end of the mood spectrum—unless music was involved and then he was a happy and boisterous monster but R’nd loved that side as much as he did the rest.

A week had passed since his mother’s death and while that still didn’t seem real, it wasn’t even the reason for the way he uncharacteristically slouched in a chair in the weyr he shared with B’jin. He had mourned for the woman he loved and had always regretted leaving her for the promise of a dragon –his sister as well, but at least he still had Eridella around and didn’t want to think about when he lost her as well. He suspected there would be times he’d suddenly be caught up in emotions brought on by a smell or memory, and knew he’d need a moment alone to compose himself once more, but it wasn’t her loss that had him tossing back the shot of whiskey before refilling the glass with another splash of the harsh liquid—it was the secret she left behind.

Eridella had asked him to help her go through their mother’s belongings, picking out a few items for their kids and maybe even themselves, something R’nd had both dreaded and wanted to do as well. They were nearly done when Pendalier came by and all the disdain he seemed to always have for his little brother finally broke free now that their mom wasn’t there to see it. R’nd wouldn’t have cared if Pendalier had only called him names and pointed out flaws, but the bastard had to insult their mother’s good name by accusing her of cheating on their father and carrying another man’s child.

Instinct, the urge he always had when it came to defending family and friends, took over and R’nd soon found himself cradling his left hand as he stared down at his brother that he had just clocked. It was only thanks to Eridella being there that the punch didn’t turn into a full out beat down as she urged him to calm down and leave with her. Not that they had any other choice as Pendalier kicked them out, stating bastards had no place under his roof.

Eridella pleaded with him to forget what had happened and after a less than pleasant conversation and a stop at a vendor to buy the whiskey, an hour had passed and R’nd sat alone in the rapidly darkening weyr. He hadn’t put out glow stones or lit any candles, relying only on the daylight coming from the ledge to find his way around enough to grab the glass and make himself comfortable with his new bottled friend. He wasn’t even sure when B’jin would be home as the greenrider knew his plans for the day and had likely made his own family visits or got into mischief as only a Harper could. R’nd wasn’t even sure if he wanted his mate home yet or not, knowing he’d have to explain what happened and he hadn’t even come to terms with it himself.

B’jin was in a wonderful mood, for no other reason than that he’d woken up bubbly and nothing had brought him down that day – so far, at least. Whether that was the reason Larrikith kept the news of R’nd and Ayyonth coming home early to herself, or the fact that she didn’t want to tell B’jin because she just didn’t want to, the greenrider was unaware that his mate was on the other side of their weyr door as he walked cheerfully up the hall with another greenrider, both of them talking with great animation – hands waving and B’jin bouncing around as he walked – about one of the maiden flights and the way the young green had been rather spectacular in the air. B’jin had taken great amusement in Veeth chasing, though he had no doubt Valerian would be glad the cheerful blue didn’t win. The greenrider wasn’t a bad guy, but he wasn’t really, well, a good prize either…

When they reached B’jin’s weyr, he invited his friend in, feeling rather social as he grinned and tossed the door open, singing a silly line from a well-known song as he bounced backwards. His companion laughed along with him, and B’jin saw him take two steps forward before being interrupted by his dragon. There really wasn’t any way to fake that expression, and B’jin sniggered. He’s always felt that the other man pulled a particularly funny face. The apology that came was waved off, and B’jin spun around on his toes and pranced inside alone, flicking the door shut with the toes of one boot as he continued the song he’d started singing when he entered. It was an upbeat song that went along with a popular dance, and B’jin floated along step by step, spinning himself around as he sung loudly to his unknown audience.

It was only then that he caught sight of R’nd, mid-spin, and B’jin let out a very ladylike shriek of surprise. Caught unawares, B’jin tripped over his own feet and landed heavily on his rear on the floor, unconsciously thankful for the thick rug they’d purchased not so long ago that softened his fall… a little bit. “Rin!” He gasped, holding a hand to his pounding chest as he stared at his mate through the gloomy light. “You frightened the shit out of me!” He admonished, though his tone was playful as he picked himself up off the ground and dusted down his pants. “Why are you sitting in the dark?”

Moving towards his lover, B’jin’s expression changed from puzzled amusement to a worried frown as he took in the miserable air around R’nd. The greenrider’s lips pursed and he adjusted his path just slightly so he could uncover several glows on his way to R’nd. He noticed the smell of whisky before he spotted the bottle, and eyebrows arched just slightly. B’jin would never judge someone for drinking, and certainly not R’nd, but he was surprised that R’nd was drinking so early, and that it was such a strong type of alcohol.

“Do you want to talk?” B’jin asked gently, stopping just close enough to R’nd to make it clear he wasn’t about to run off, and that he wanted to hold him, but decades of unwanted physical contact was still ingrained in him, and he had trouble pushing past the line. B’jin knew R’nd would never hurt him, no matter how much he didn’t want to be touched, but it was hard to force himself to act on that knowledge. He reached out gently with his left hand, gently collecting the tips of R’nd’s fingers and giving them a gentle squeeze.

R’nd started at B’jin’s exclamation, not having heard his mate come in. That alone was already a good indicator something was off about the bluerider that seemed to always be aware of his surroundings and gave his attention to those he was with. He glanced up from his cup he had been staring in, thoughts alternating between the saying that someone was looking for the answers at the bottom of their mug and actually hoping that was true. “It wasn’t dark when I sat down,” he shrugged and tossed back the rest of the drink.

He was starting to feel numb, which was nice and yet discomforting. R’nd didn’t enjoy losing control like getting drunk usually led to but he wanted to forget the pain of the day—though it wasn’t like he could live in a constant state of whiskey-induced bliss for the rest of his life. He would have to learn how to cope with the news and while his first instinct was to say he didn’t want to talk about it—he hated burdening anyone with his issues—he wondered if it would help. After all, wasn’t that what he told his friends when he saw them upset or sad? He wanted to comfort them and asked them to confide in him.

“Pendalier informed me I am no longer welcomed at the Hold. He called me the bastard of a weak-minded, cheating whore. I punched him. Eridella begged me to take us home. She confirmed that she and I share the same father but it’s not the man that raised us.” R’nd had no idea when his siblings found out this information. Did they always know? Was it when he was presumed dead? Was it on their mother’s deathbed? Did she have it written down and Pendalier found it after she was dead? He honestly didn’t know for Pendalier but Eridella admitted she had known since her wedding. Their mother confessed as it was a good way to ensure husbands continued to get the offspring they wanted. His darling sister couldn’t stop there, though, as she admitted that her two youngest were from a lover as her husband could still preform but she wasn’t getting pregnant from him.

R’nd knew he couldn’t judge Eridella on that given the children he had running around with various women. But at least they all seemed to know who their real father was, even if they didn’t want him in their lives. That was something else entirely he had to speak to B’jin and his sons about but that would wait until he was done with his own identity crisis.

He waited another moment to let the information be processed as the cup was set down on a table. He was done with the alcohol. It would be so easy to keep downing shot after shot but the taste wasn’t really to his liking and neither was the desired effect. Yes, he wanted to forget but nothing else that went with a bottle of whiskey sounded delightful.

“It makes sense, really,” he began his tale again, focus back on B’jin both as a way to watch his mate’s reactions and for his own selfish comfort the man’s very presence brought him. “While I didn’t think father hated me and I didn’t hate him, I just couldn’t live up to standards. I did wonderfully in all of my lessons and my manners were impeccable but I thought my lack of love for the seacraft, which created the Hold and kept us secure, never sat well with him.” He recalled his father seeming to approve of being Searched but R’nd had never been able to figure out if that was because he liked the idea of his youngest being a dragonrider or if it was the better alternative than seeing his son show little passion for the seacraft and becoming an embarrassment in the community. Now he knew the truth. Pendar likely knew he only had one legitimate child amongst the three claiming to be his yet he went along with it as best as he could so as not to lose control over his subjects.

B’jin blinked, mildly surprised and somewhat more worried, by R’nd’s bland response. While it wasn’t that late yet, and hardly dark outside, the weyr itself didn’t get a whole lot of daylight in it. Not like when they were living in large windowed huts in Katila! It had taken B’jin a while to get used to living in the semi-dark of the cave styled weyrs. He’d never been one for liking the dark, which was why the weyr he shared with R’nd had glowstones just about every two feet, or anywhere he could set one. It was also why Larrikith and Ayyonth shared their weyr with a large assortment of lavender in pots.

A little shake of his head and B’jin pulled himself back to focus on R’nd as the bluerider spoke, blonde head tipping slightly to one side at the name of his mate’s brother. Anger flickered over B’jin’s face at Pendalier banishing R’nd from his childhood home, before a soft ‘Oh,’ escaped as R’nd continued. B’jin pursed his lips and did his best to not say anything else as he watched R’nd stare down into his cup once more. Honestly, B’jin wasn’t quite sure how he was supposed to answer him, and that made B’jin more than a little uncomfortable.

“Oh, sweetheart,” B’jin said softly, not even sure how to continue for several moments, just standing there awkwardly. A deep breath was taken, and B’jin puffed it out slowly and gave R’nd a slightly pained look. “That’s really far more common in the higher-ranking families than they would like their subjects to know.” He considered for a moment, before continuing. “Especially considering the flack they give dragonriders for being promiscuous.”

B’jin scratched one cheek, looking awkward again; didn’t help that he was in need of a shave. B’jin dropped his hand from his face and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Probably not the best moment to tell you that, ahh, you remember Amarilla?” B’jin would have been shocked if R’nd didn’t remember the beautiful Lady of Telgar, but B’jin was also more than a little biased in that matter. “Lady of Telgar?” B’jin shifted awkwardly, aware that he was attempting to delay and not really trying to change that. Taking a deep breath, B’jin cringed and looked at R’nd with great pain. “The Heir of Telgar is my son.”

Well, if he had any doubt about your relationship with that woman pre-me, he won’t now. Larrikith snorted, amused, and B’jin ignored her with great dignity. He was pretty sure her second son was his, too, but he wasn’t positive and (when questioned) neither was she. But they were pretty sure he was. The math was slightly off kilter, but Amarilla was quite sure that was because the child had been born late, not because he wasn’t B’jin’s. Not that it made much difference to B’jin, in the end. The two boys were barely younger than R’nd – which was awkward as fuck – and B’jin had no desire to let anyone know he had two grown kids if he didn’t have to.

He wasn’t quite sure now was the moment he should tell R’nd he was – what? Step father once removed? – of the upcoming Lord of Telgar. But he felt akward, and unsure, and didn’t know what to say to his lover. His immediate response of a shocked ‘you didn’t know?!’ didn’t seem like it would quite be appropriate. B’jin’s nose crinkled up and he left R’nd to swallow the information he’d just dumped on him, and collected to mugs of warm (hot) chocolate. B’jin wasn’t huge on hot-chocolate (he’d rather – so shockingly – wine) but he felt the warmth of the drink would be well received and it wouldn’t keep them up and antsy like klah would.

Returning, B’jin set R’nd’s preferred mug down in front of him, not looking at his lover as he quietly took the stool beside him, waiting.

Had he really lived such a sheltered life to never have realised his father wasn't his father? That what he knew now about the affairs of lords and ladies wouldn't have applied to his own family? Truthfully, he was rather sheltered. He was the pampered youngest child of the lord of a seahold that was Searched as soon as he was eligible. Then the plague hit soon after that and he lived alone in the wilds of the South with only R'jit and his dragon before living in Katila which had its own rules of society. Was it really any wonder why he still viewed his sister and mother as perfect with his rose-tinted glasses? It likely also didn't help that his father died before he found the courage to reunite with his family so he never could compare their likeness and it never struck him as odd that Pendalier was dark haired when he and Eridella were blonde; that was the difference between their parents after all.

The more he went over the news, the more R'nd knew he didn't even blame or hate his mother for what she did. Eridella's reasoning did make sense; why risk your own future because an heir or more children weren't being produced? If outside sources helped, then so be it. Again, he also couldn't talk about fidelity when he possibly had five children running around and only two of them shared a mother.

No, what he was really devastated by was how he learned the news and that Pendalier disowned him. They had never truly gotten along as children and R'nd barely spent any time with his brother now that he was back, so it wasn't a true loss in that area. But that was still his childhood home. It didn't matter that he had been among the dragonriders a lot longer than he had been with Holders when that Hold held memories and familiar faces. It didn't even matter if they didn't like each other much; they were still family. It hurt to be cut off from a portion of it. At least he still had Eridella and her brood and she had been so accepting of his parade of children. She likely still would have been even if her two youngest were her husband's.

He was about ready to admit his foolishness with what he had always believed and take the ribbing for being young and naive that would surely follow when B'jin added to the list of confessions he had heard that day. R'nd almost stopped his mate from continuing, not really in the mood to learn more secrets about his loved ones but B'jin spoke before he could and it earned a small smirk and dull eyes brightening with amusement even as his mate ran off to the kitchen.

He accepted the drink when it appeared, pausing to give a deep sniff of the sweet drink that he loved so much. "I'm not blind, B'jin," really, just because he couldn't recognise his own kids or apparently his own father didn't mean he missed out on everything else around him. "I see the way you and Amarilla look at each other, I have seen the heir of Telgar at gathers and noticed he resembled you if you knew what to look for. The fact that you didn't want me to meet your son also helped put this puzzle together." At first R'nd figured it was because he was close in age to the son but the more he thought on it, the more he realised his casual observation was correct and the heir was actually B'jin's.

Why he figured that out and never thought about his own parentage was beyond him.

B’jin’s eyebrows lifted, his own lips twisting into a wry smirk “Of course you aren’t, love,” he teased gently, reaching over to give R’nd’s knee a playful squeeze, his touch lingering – not in an attempt to initiate anything, but simply because he enjoyed being inside R’nd’s personal space bubble. Brown eyes crinkled in amusement, “Just when you want to be.” Though, from what B’jin had seen over the turns, that want was usually quite subconscious. Of course, B’jin was a master of selective blindness, deafness, or overall refusal to acknowledge something that made him uncomfortable so he could understand.

It wouldn’t save R’nd from being teased, but he did understand.

“I’m sorry you were kicked out of your childhood home,” B’jin said softly, sobering from his teasing. That was something else he could relate too, having been stolen from his childhood home by one great big fat green mind hacker. He’d never bothered to go back to his birth home; his parents he knew would be long dead – something confirmed by his sister when he (accidentally) first reunited with her in Telgar. He didn’t care to see what had become of the small farming lands they’d once called home. What would be there but the dust of memories most likely left undisturbed?

Shifting onto his feet, B’jin wrapped his arms lazily around R’nd’s shoulder’s and rested his chin atop his left, the novelty of being ‘taller’ as he stood behind the bluerider making him smile for a moment, before a small half smirk formed on his lips as he murmured, “If you want, we can take Larri by. I’m sure she’ll eat him if you ask nicely. She’s always wanted to try human flesh.” Fluttering his eyelashes with a great show of innocence, B’jin kissed R’nd on the cheek, and then set his chin back to the resting place of R’nd’s left shoulder.

The image of his brother being eaten by a fat green dragon was somewhat enjoyable and he cracked another smile but even if Larrikith did suddenly turn into a man-eater, R'nd knew he couldn't let that happen and shook his head in the negative. "We're supposed to be getting Holders to like dragonriders again, not scaring them away." Considering his home was in the Benden region and they might yet one day open that Weyr, they needed to keep Benden just as happy as they did Fort, Telgar, and Ista.

"It's fine, really. I love the people of that Hold but I never truly fit in anyway. Being Searched saved me from a miserable life and being ostracized a lot earlier in life." Given what he knew now, R'nd supposed the man that raised him would have eventually tired of his lack of enthusiasm and dedicated to the seacraft and tossed him out in his teens or married him off to some random Hold far from him. He owed R'jit so much and even Ayyonth deserved some of the love despite his attitude and enjoyment of teasing his rider. I do it because I care, Ayyonth announced from where he was still sprawled on his ledge, soaking up the last rays of fading daylight.R'nd, as usual, ignored him.

"I still have Rell," at the mention of his sister's nickname, the little blue firelizard that inherited her name appeared and landed on R'nd's knee. Rell had tried to console him earlier but R'nd had sent him off to play as he wanted to be alone, though he only went so far as the bedroom. Hearing his name, the flitter couldn't help but take it as an invitation to come back and R'nd gave in to petting the creature with a chuckle. "Both Rells. My sister wants to speak to you, by the way. She has a proposition or some such thing for you but she said it can wait until we're up to being social." He had no idea what Eridella wanted and while he was intrigued, R'nd still wasn't in a hurry to go see her again. He needed time to adjust to everything he learned.

B’jin gave a snort of laughter, after working quite hard to swallow the mouthful of hot chocolate he’d taken just before R’nd’s quip so that he didn’t spit it over his lover’s neck, and he tried to give his mate a dry look, though it was rather ruined by his obvious amusement. “Larrikith can be very subtle,” he said mildly, taking a sip of his drink once more; placing it carefully on the benchtop, B’jin nuzzled R’nd’s neck.

B’jin actually managed to smile – and mean it – at R’nd’s idolising being Searched, kissing R’nd’s jawline softly. “I love you,” B’jin said softly, grinning when the blue firelizard appeared at his name. “And so do both Rells,” he said, waiting the three seconds it took for Shimmer to appear out of their bedroom and land neatly on the countertop. She ignored both humans and her blue companion as she stuck her nose into B’jin’s mug and helped herself to his leftover chocolate drink.

“Oh?” B’jin leaned back from where he’d been slouching comfortably against R’nd, and peered around him to frown quizzically. A quirky twist of the lips appeared after a moment. “I do hope she knows I’m not available,” he said with mock seriousness, “no matter how superior my progeny are than her husband’s, I really don’t think Pern could handle us combining forces.” B’jin grinned impishly and kissed R’nd on the cheek.

He wasn’t sure if B’jin was aware or not, but the love confessions didn’t spook him anymore. It’d be pretty horrible if they did after being together for nine years and admitting only months earlier that he viewed them as mated. R’nd was pretty proud of his growth and truth be told, the reminder made him relax as much as the alcohol had. There had been a good chance that B’jin would have tossed him aside for having such a messy family tree and not wanting to deal with the extra drama. He never doubted B’jin, but the chance was still there. They could both be considered perfectionists and had a way about them that suggested they didn’t want to get tangled into something too emotionally traumatising so everything B’jin had said, had been a relief.

R’nd’s first reaction to B’jin’s words about what Eridella might want, was to chuckle. He already felt the planet was doomed with the two knowing each other—or at least his world felt that way at times when they joined forces to tease him. He loved and trusted them both so the idea that Eridella would want to literally proposition B’jin for another child was ridiculous, though it did help nudge him to something a bit more likely. Was his sister trying to merge their families with a marriage? Amorandii was closing in on a proper marriage age and Eridella had a couple of available sons. He loved his nephews, but if he was right about what Eridella wanted, R’nd was going to have to get to know the boys a bit better to ensure they would be good for their sweet Lady Amorandii.

It made even more sense when R’nd recalled how he suggested one of their mother’s necklaces be given to B’jin’s daughter. Eridella loved the idea but asked to hang onto it so she could present it to the young lady when they next had a large family gathering. At the time, R’nd didn’t think it strange. Now, he knew Eridella was plotting something.

“I’m sure she’ll find a way to console herself over the fact that you’re taken, love. Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be in much of a mood to eat or socialise at dinner but I don’t want you to miss out, especially since my inside sources say they’re doing that cream puff dessert you love.” R’nd gave B’jin a genuine smile, showing that even though he wasn’t up for doing much more than sulking in the dark, he still fully supported his mate going out and having a good time. “Although if you happen to bring back some dessert, I have a feeling I might manage to eat them.” Sweets would always be his biggest weakness.

B’jin laughed, and slipped back around R’nd to take a seat, lifting his mug of somewhat cooled chocolate drink to take a sip. A slight frown claimed his face and he put the mug down carefully, studying R’nd. “Are you sure?” he asked, more than just concerned for his mate. Even after more than a decade free of N’mall, the greenrider still had learned behaviours from his youth that were hard to shake off. Regardless, R’nd’s warm smile had B’jin relaxing, and he smiled back. “Well,” he drawled, his smile growing into a playful smirk. “It would be best not to insult our dessert makers…”

Finishing the last of his drink, but leaving the powdery dregs, B’jin bounced cheerfully over to put it beside the small woven basin that was used for washing up the small amount of kitchenware that they kept on hand. Bouncing back, B’jin pressed up against R’nd, sharing a lingering chocolate flavoured kiss. Pulling back, B’jin smiled adoringly at R’nd, but brown eyes were alight with playful mischief. “I’ll bring you back some dessert,” he said quietly, words thick with inuendo.

Slipping out of R’nd’s light grip with ease, B’jin blew his mate a playful kiss before bouncing out of the room, his steps light and filled with the cheer that had been apparent before he realised R’nd was feeling down. It wasn’t just his previous good mood, though; he felt lighter for having shared his own secret, and that R’nd hadn’t shied away from sharing what had him down meant more to B’jin that he could likely articulate. By the time B’jin threw himself into the Dining Hall, he was singing loudly and with great enthusiasm a cheerful ditty of a song that more than a couple diners joined in for.
