Month 05, 741 AL

North: Late Spring | South: Late Autumn
9.9 C to 18.4 C | 13.7 C to 24.5 C

Ista is heating up swiftly, and preparing for a rough summer - hopefully nothing like the one from a couple turns before with the wildfires! The rest of Northern Pern is warming upsomewhat slower, but with no less gusto as summer begins to creep into the sky, keeping the sun awake longer, warming the ledges of the weyrs. Rainstorms are sporadic, but keep the world well watered, despite the heat of the days.

The Red Star can be seen by those who choose to see it, causing no shortage of whispers that Thread will return - and just as much dismissal from those who do not believe. After all, it's been so long, surely it is no longer a threat! Weyrleaders are, regardless, beginning to put together wings in their Weyrs, if only to keep troublesome and bored riders busy.

Month 12, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Winter -3 - 2 C | 26 - 35 F
Fort is already home to snowfalls, though early in the month they fade away when the sun rises. As the month progresses, more snow stays on the ground, ending up with several feet of snow before the month is over. The areas around homes and populations has the snow shoveled away or trodden down. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove some danger and are routinely removed.

Ista Boundaries:
Winter, 9 - 21 C | 48 - 69 F
Generally warm enough to go about without a jacket on, Ista has low humidity but high chance of rain, generally in the form of vicious afternoon thunderstorms. The storms wash away any bite of heat the day had, and leave it feeling fresh for the night. The days are short, but grow bright quickly and the afternoons seem to be particularly short when heavy thunderstorms roll in and cover the sky.

Telgar Boundaries:
Winter, -5 - 0 C | 23 - 32 F
Bitterly cold, with icy winds constantly flowing down from the mountains. Freezing rain is almost constant; the sky always a murky grey and the ground slippery with slushy refrozen ice. The days are extremely short, with the nights dropping a good number below the daily average. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove a major danger, and are checked upon every day, with anything bigger than a fist being removed.

Month 07, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Summer 27 - 38 C | 80 - 100 F
Light breezes down from the mountains tot he North keep the temperature comfortable, even when the sun can bake an egg on the edge of a weyr. Sunburn is common.

Ista Boundaries:
Summer, 34 - 43 C | 93 - 110 F
A very dry, dusty heat. Little to no rain, causing more than some to worry about the drought not breaking and the rest of the Isle being at risk of fires. Many seek the depths of weyr, hold or hall during the midday and early afternoon heat.

Telgar Boundaries:
Summer, 26 - 35 C | 79 - 95 F
Muggy, sticky and generally just plain humid. Thunder storms are regular occurances, often happening in the early afternoon or evening, with heavy rainfall before drying off sometime in the night. Mornings are usually crisp, but warm up swiftly.

Month 04, 740 AL
North: Early Spring | South: Early Autumn
−1.9 C to 4.7 C | 20.0 C to 29.0

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself naturally warmer, (~10C / 50) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Katila is beginning to cool down to more reasonable temperature, but is no less muggy and uncomfortable to those who are not used to the seasons. It is still a good place to escape to when seeking a warm day or a nice swim at the lake, though.

Month 12, 739 AL
North: Early Winter| South: Early Summer
-3.1 to 2.1 C | 20.4 C to 29.4 C

Winter has come slowly to the Northern lands of Pern, with more rain and cold winds than snow. As the month progresses, more and more snow will fall, with frequent blizzard-like storms towards the very end of the month. Telgar and Fort will in particular become burried under mountains of snow, while Ista is sunjected to frequent icy rainstorms, and heavy winds coming in from across the ocean.

13.4 to 21.0 C | 13.8 C to 25.6 C

Following the disastrous fires (sometime in around the 28th of Month 08), Ista Isle has found itself suddenly in the midst of constant rain; not enough to flood, but a steady, dreary downfall that seems to only take a time out for a couple of hours here and there, before coming back again. Its cast the entire sooty Isle into a sombre and depressed mood. Alongside the rain, the weather is muggy and while not hot, is not particularly cool, either.

The rest of Northern Pern is getting their usual weather, though they, too, have been called to action following the wildfires that savaged Ista. Many individuals who called Ista Island home have been relocated not just to Ista Weyr, Ista Hold or Sea Cliff Hold, but also to other areas of Pern, whether with family or friends.

Month 08, 739 AL
North: Late Summer | South: Late Winter
17.4 to 25.5 C | 10.8 C to 23.2 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm - 37 to 45 C - has resulted in an incredibly dry summer, with little to no rain. This was climaxed by a dry thunderstorm, the results of which caused three fires to start across the Island on the 24.07.739 in the early morning hours. While the results of this are yet to be played out, the events will no doubt leave more than just the scarring of the land.

Month 07, 739 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter
18.0 to 26.6 C | 10.2 C to 21.9 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm, with average weather being in the 37 to 45 C range, making it now a more than slightly undesirable escape for the rest of the Northern population from the more enjoyable early summer weather. There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind. Ista's limited farmlands and fields are dry and dusty, with golden straw instead of grass where there is any growth at all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are still getting a lot of evening rain and the occasional thunderstorms, which cools down the populus and allows them to sleep easily without sweating their brains out like the Istans.

There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind.

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself uncommonly warm (~12C / 53.6) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Month 11, 738 AL
North: Late Autumn | South: Late Spring

Autumn is coming to an end, with the days slowly becoming shorter still, with early nights and late mornings. The temperature is getting very cool, with jackets being more required, but it has yet to actually snow. Despite this, it is often raining and miserable.

The Southern contient is in full bloom, with flowers coming to life in the grasses and on the trees. The skies are bright blue with fluffy clouds, and occassional sunshowers bringing a dampness to the day. The nights are still crisp, but not cold. The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 10, 738 AL
North: Mid Autumn | South: Mid Spring

Autumn is in full tilt, with the leaves a shocking array of orange and red, and more of them on the ground than on the trees. The skies are often a clear and crisp blue, with a cool breeze flowing, shifting the leaves and sending them scattering. Rain is not common, but when it does roll in the skies are dark like night come early, and thunderstorms are not uncommon, though they don't last for long and the amount of rain that falls isn't too heavy.

The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 09, 738 AL
North: Start Autumn | South: Start Spring

Nothern regions are entering into Autumn, with the trees beginning to change to their reds and oranges, while the air is beginning to feel more crips. There are still more warm days than cool, and the nights are mostly warm enough for light bedding still. Rain has faded away and most days are clear and bright.

The Southern contient finds itself heading into spring, with rain and flowers vying for attention. The ground is often muddy and squishy, while the skies are either bright and blue, or overcast wtih fluffy clouds.

Month 08, 738 AL
North: End Summer | South: End Winter

Summer is winding to an end in the Northern hemisphere, with the weather slowly cooling and the trees beginning to turn their leaves. The days are still long and bright, but the sun is beginning to lose some of its strength.

The coastal Weyrs are falling victim to coastal storms, strong winds and heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

The more inbound Weyrs and Holds find themselves drier, not getting nearly as much rain or storms, they find themselves on the end of a long drought.

Month 07, 738 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter

Summer is in full spring in the Nothern hemisphere, with the bulk of each day being unbearbly hot, followed by vicious thunderstorms and heavy humidity in the evenings and at night.

The coastal areas are experiencing monsoon like weather, and spend a lot of their time locked away in Hold, Hall or Weyr.

The more inner locations find themselves faced with more dry heat during the day, and horrible humidity in the evening and at night while the thunderstorms rage.

ITS AN UPDATE! HOORAH!

I'm not dead, my loves! This month's Event is 'Close Call!' - have fun! Stamps will be uploaded and on display in our Discord chatroom.

There is a topic here for discussion about Pernese religions and belief systems, including in and out of Weyr opinions (variably and as a whole) in regards to delicate matters, such as birth, death, and the afterlife. Also, ghosts anyone? Now I'm imagining a giant arse dragon ghost....

Healer Hall is accepting Gold Candidates (just from Fort, for now) and R'nya will soon be discussing with his Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn the merits of bringing in additional female candidates.... on the condition they are approved for Healer Apprenticeship...

Thallyath, Casa's little gold dragon, will be taking to the skies for her maiden flight in the first week of April (IC date will be 740-04-01) and while a mate is already decided, this clutch will be PC and more candidates are ALWAYS welcome, whether you want them to Impress this round --- or not!

September 2018

Spring is here! ... In Australia, anyway!

This month’s riveting event is ‘Seas of Fun’, in honour of International Pirate’s Day! After all the drama with the fires, we expect that taking to the sea (or lake, river, pond, etc) would be a very relaxing way to spend some downtime for many dragonriders and Holderfolk alike!

In preparation for October, the even is “Memories of the Past”, which we hope will be a fun way to explore your character’s past, either in solo posts or threads, as inner monolog or as back posting! How you choose to partake is entirely up to you!

October will also see our next PC HATCHING! In order to have your Candidate qualify for Impression, they must have no less than 20 posts! There are lots of characters floating around who would be more than happy to help your Candidate breech that count! Don’t forget to also UPDATE YOUR APPLICATIONS where applicable, or make sure it is submitted at all! We can’t Impress your character if we don’t know what they should be getting!

As always, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

If you haven't already, please drop by the Dragonrider Weyr Allocations thread, and let us know where your dragonriders call home. We are hoping to set up Wings across the three PC Weyrs over the next month or so, and your assistance is much appreciated! As a result, we will be looking for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and of course Candidates for the clutches we have scheduled for this year!

August 2018

ITS AUGUST! Do you know what that means? It means its less than 4 months until Christmas! OMG.

Okay. So moving on! This month sees us (hopefully) wrapping up the Camp Kink event! Who doesn’t love an abundance of young adults exploring their sexuality without restraint? Its been a hell of a fun ride (haha get it?) so far! Can’t wait to see what the grapevine makes of it when words gets out … haha!

On a more serious note, this month will see us engaging in the Istan Wildfires! This event is a free for all! Feel free to have your characters interact with the event in any way you feel is suitable! There is a lot of room here for personal dramas, trouble making, hero worshiping, etcetera! We really want to see how characters interact with, and dictate, the outcome of the event!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

July 2018

July was July-y.

June 2018

Welcome to the new month! Like always, I'm slack in getting the update up and running, but here it is! This month we have the event 'Summer Fling' - [Link] - which is turning out to be all kinds of entertaining already! Remember, it doesn't have to include smut! It could be an innocent date with some - *gasp* - hand holding!

This month also saw Gold Bedith of Mulrissa take to the skies! She was won by young Syrendryth of T'ryn! Congrats, and may your Hatching be less dramatic than the last one! The Hatching will take place in October so you have a lot of time to get Candidates created, approved, and posting up a storm!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

April 2018

Well, it’s halfway through the month which shows you how awful I am at keeping this stuff up to date, haha. Due to my slackness, there is no event this month, but the month of May will be hosting ’Lost Belongings’ wherein characters should find something they – or someone else – lost.

In the meantime, gold Okalinath of Kahleena has taken to the skies! You can find her Flight thread taking place on the 4th, here Currently, there is no planned winner, so be sure to throw your bronzes and browns her way! They do not need to be natives to Telgar Weyr to participate!

March 2018

Welcome to March, my friends!

Unfortunately, this month we don’t have any events set up, so we encourage you to wrap up threads and create some personal plots! Next month will be bringing in a new monthly event (Lost Belongings!) so you can always set your character up for that! If you have ideas for future Events, you can submit them here!. Additionally, you can see upcoming events here!

Speaking of new threads, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

January 2018

Welcome to the New Year, one and all! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday season, and we can't wait to see what your characters will get up to over the next twelve months (and beyond!). The Secret Santa Event has been extended until the 30th of January, so for those of you (like me!) who were busy over the end of December, we hope you can get your threads up and running over the next few weeks! There has been a lot of interesting interactions so far! As we extended the SSE, there won't be a specific January event this month! Don't worry though, we have something up our sleeve for February!

With the end of December, our Christmas layout has gone back into hiding! You'll be able to use it again at the end of the year, when Christmas again rolls around. You can expect a new layout for the site in the near future.

December 2017

And so it is December! Can’t believe how fast this year is flying by! At any rate, we have LOTS of fun for you this month! For starters, why don’t you sign up for our Secret Santa Event! Pairs will be assigned on the 14th! You can sign your character(s) up as a Giver, a Receiver or Both! We also hope that you enjoy our Christmas layout, which will be available for use for the entire month of December! After that, it will go into hiding until next Christmas!

We will also be awarding the HORRIFYING MOMENTS stamps to those who qualified for them, as well as the WORDS OF THE MONTH for November. We hope you enjoyed these Events, and you can expect more of them in the upcoming year!

This month we will also be focusing on the RP Records, and request you submit all your threads here so we can update the Timeline! As it says in the thread, the Timeline will be updated every month, in the first week. To help us maintain, be sure to submit your threads as soon as you open them!

November 2017

Welcome to November! We'd love it if you would take the time to Vote in our Horrifying Moments threads! We will also be awarding Stamps for people who vote, not just those who took part! We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we did! You can see the Stamps that will be awarded in the Horrifying Moment's thread.

This month we are doing a 'Words of the Month' event! You can choose your word/s as indicated in the thread, and may particpate with as many characters as you desire! This contest has no voting to earn stamps; you get a stamp just for participating! Enjoy!

October 2017

Welcome to October! As part of our Halloween celebrations, the Horrifying Moments event is now open! You may START a thread at any point during the month of October to qualify it for the event! We hope you have a lot of fun with this event, and we look forward to reading your threads! Don't forget to "Like" the threads you enjoy most, so we can award someone the MOST HORRIFYING stamp! Stamps will be revealed later in the month!

September 2017

Welcome to September! This month, we're working on our Awards for the site! We are also advertising avidly! Please welcome any guests or new members with all that warm charm we know you all posess! That said, we are still seeking Affiliates, so if you're here to drop an ad, please consider us!

Our next PC Clutch will be in the new year, so now is the pefect time to join with old candidates (how many clutches have they stood for now?!) and candidate hopefuls! Get those eager young men and women out there and grow them so we can match them with their perfect lifemate when the new year rolls around and one of our lovely golds throws a clutch on the Sands -- At this point in time, the Weyrs are sharing Candidates, so your Candidate can be Searched by any Weyr, and transfer to the one holding the PC clutch!

August 2017

We are officially open for our relaunch, and are excited to meet and greet new RPers! We're currently looking for all types of characters, including Weyrleaders and goldriders! But we also have lots of room for green and blueriders, weyrfolk, candidates, and all types of Hall folk, such as Masters, Journeymen and Apprentices. If you have any questions, feel free to hit us up in the Cbox or Discord chats, which can be found on the lower part of the screen.

July 2017

We are currently having an event to Create Adoptables! And encourage everyone to take part!

History is almost complete, and the profile has been re-coded. All new characters will need to go onto the new profile, but all old can keep their current! We'll begin advertising properly over the next couple of weeks, once the history has been completed, and probably after the weekend of the 8th and 9th, because that is when ThistleProse is having her birthday.

June 2017

We are on the brink of relaunching! Our history is being rewritten and cleaned up! We are accepting new members, and old! Our advertisment has been re-written, and will be put out there soon. We are also accepting affiliates of all descriptions, genres and themes! If you would like to affiliate with us, please go here
We officially have two layouts! You can post here with any issues you find, or request any changes!

May 2017

Progress has slowed down a little, due to RL events (yay promotions! Boo no internet!) but we're getting back on track! Documents are still being written and we've put together a FAQs page, though its likely to recieve a lot of adjustments as we come across things. The current goal is to have everything set up and ready by July, but we'll see how well we go at that. And by we, I mean ThistleProse. lol.

April 2017

The layout is almost complete, but there is still a lot of work to be done; documents are being written up and can be found in the Site Map menu opion. Players can begin to move their characters' information to their Account Profiles, but be aware some changes may still be made and/or added.
If you find any bugs or issues, plese repot them here, and we will do our best to fix them in a timely manner.

The finer details of the Healer Hall’s arrangement with the dragonriders was still being worked out, but R’nya had already started submitting the names of Weyrfolk to be considered as students. Verec had also received the list of former Healers among the dragonriders, and he had all the paperwork for this experiment of theirs organized on his desk. He’d started a file for potential students, and while so far it only had the lists of names, Verec was hoping to add to it today. There was a sheet of paper set on his desk in front of him with one word on it — a name. Madiquel.

She was the first of his interviews of the Weyrfolk, and Verec had a sneaking suspicion she was somehow important to the arrangement. Her name had been the first submitted to him, after all, top of the list, and first to come visit. Well, perhaps visit was a strong word, Verec thought as he made sure he had a sharp writing utensil handy, considering she was there to prove to him she was worth the time, effort, and resources to train as a Healer who wouldn’t truly be part of his Hall. Maybe he could lure some of them away from the Weyrs, though he doubted it.

With a thoughtful hum Verec dug out another sheet of paper, this one with a list of topics and questions he wanted to cover in the interview, and looked it over to refresh his memory. Most of the points were fairly basic and straightforward, but he wanted to make sure he didn’t forget anything important. He had put a lot of thought into these interviews, after all, wouldn’t do to miss an important point.

Verec expected her to arrive any minute. He’d assigned a young Journeyman to keep an eye out for the dragon who would be arriving with his interviewee, and to greet them and escort the girl to his office, as well as make sure the dragonrider who brought her wouldn’t get up to any shenanigans while waiting to bring the girl back to the Weyr. The girl’s ride did not need to be present for the interview itself, as whoever they were would be irrelevant to whether or not Madiquel would be accepted as a student. Verec rather hoped she would — starting with a failure would hardly be auspicious, but he wasn’t going to accept her just because she was first. After a few more minutes of organizing his desk and making sure everything he wanted was laid out, Verec heard a knock on his office door.

“Enter,” he called, watching as the door swung open to reveal his Journeyman and a teenage girl. “Thank you, Terin,” Verec gave the Journeyman a nod before fixing his gaze on the girl, “Madiquel, I believe? You may take a seat,” he said, gesturing at the chair across from his desk. Time to see what this girl was made of.

Madiquel knew it was silly to be nervous – everyone had made it quite clear that they had all the faith on Pern in her – but that really only added to it all. What if she let them down? What if she failed to be whatever it was the Healer was looking for when he met her? She knew she had a weak stomach, and was hoping that it was something she would be able to overcome with the education she’d receive within the Hall; blood and guts and gore just weren’t her thing but she also knew she could look past all of that when it came to it. Hadn’t she already proven that in the past? She wasn’t prone to fainting, either, it just… well, it just made her queasy to think about!

When R’nya had come to collect her, Madiquel had given her Papa a fierce hug, and a nervous smile to Quinvalis who had spent the morning with her helping her not fall apart. His company was a huge relief, and she wasn’t too excited about leaving him behind in the Weyr while she did this interview meeting thing. Nonetheless, she took a deep breath and smoothed down her skirts as she followed R’nya to Xyreith and graciously accepted the Weyrleader’s assistance in mounting his dragon. In all honesty, it didn’t even occur to Madiquel to consider how it might look to the Healer Hall, when the Wyerleader himself dropped her off and waited for her to be done. Rather, she was just immensely relieved it was someone that she trusted taking her (and someone her Papa trusted her with, considering).

When Xyreith found a landing spot, and both R’nya and Madiquel had settled on the ground, the girl turned and took a deep breath, smiling thankfully at R’nya when he gave her a one-armed hug of encouragement just before a Journeyman came forward and introduced himself. Glancing one last time at R’nya, Madiquel straightened her spine and quickly strode after the man, doing her best to keep up without running while also trying to look around and take in everything that was the Hall – she’d never been to a Hall before, and it was fascinating! Her curiosity helped to calm her nerves, and by the time they reached the Master Healer’s office, Madiquel was feeling more like herself, eyes wide and bright with curiosity and a small but genuine smile of excitement on her lips.

“Thank you,” Madiquel said quietly to the Journeyman just before he left, before turning her attention to the man on the other side of the room. She took in his appearance curiously, and nodded when he assumed her name correctly. “Yes, sir,” she affirmed, feeling that it would be politer to do so than to just nod like a dumb-dumb. She glanced around the office again as she made her way quietly but without dawdling to the seat he’d indicated. Seating herself, Madiquel turned her wide eyed and anticipating attention onto the man, smoothing her skirts down with a couple of nervous movements of her hands before folding them together in her lap and sitting still.

“Thank you for seeing me,” she said quietly, her eyebrows drawn together just slightly above her eyes, crinkling above her nose as she offered a swift and bright smile before her expression smoothed patiently, and she waited to see what the Master Healer would want of her. How was she going to prove to him that she would be a good student in his Hall? That she was worthy of teaching and that she’d do the right thing with the lessons that were taught to her?

Verec watched Madiquel closely as the girl went to sit down. She didn’t seem completely terrified, which was good. Calm in new situations wasn’t necessary as an Apprentice Healer — they’d be forced to learn it along the way, even if they didn’t need to start with it — but it was easier if they had it to begin with.

“The first thing I would like to know from you is why you are here,” he said, not bothering with any pleasantries and jumping right into important questions, “And if you say anything like ‘a dragon brought me,’ I will immediately ask you to leave.” Verec wasn’t in a mood to deal with children who thought they were clever, and if the girl couldn’t figure out that she should listen to his instructions around here, she really should get right back on that dragon and leave.

This first question was also important in that it would help Verec determine if the girl had any actual interest in Healing or if she was just there because her Weyrleader had decided he wanted her to be. Verec much preferred students who actually desired to be Healers, not those who were sent there because their families wanted them in the Hall. Not that that sort of person couldn’t be talented enough Healers, but Verec was much better with the students who had a real calling to Heal. And frankly he didn’t want to deal with bratty Weyrfolk who were doing this weird Holder thing because the Weyrleader said they had to. Verec was hoping to weed as many of those out as possible. It was time to see what sort Madiquel was.

The first question that fell from the Master Healer’s lips had Madiquel blinking up at him in surprise. Madiquel’s head tilted slightly, her long hair shifting and she frowned delicately at him. Was that a trick question? Eyebrows furrowed just slightly, Madiquel waited until the Master Healer had finished speaking, before replying – a small smile flickered over her lips at the quip about dragon travel – but she didn’t comment on it; it wasn’t the right time, though she had a feeling Verec would be relieved to know that the majority of folks who would respond with that were already Impressed (and mostly to blue dragons…).

“To learn,” she said honestly, her eyebrows raising up once more, but still slightly furrowed together. “To be useful to my Weyr, to help my friends and family when they’re in need.” Her features smoothed out, and she considered whether or not to elaborate. It probably wasn’t needed, but she had a feeling that the Master Healer would appreciate her candour. “My best friend Impressed at Ista,” she said, glowing proudly for A’tay, before her expression darkened. “He got mauled,” she said, before adding hastily, “not badly!” Well, that was a relative term – especially considered to the disaster that Hatching had been. “But I want to be able to help,” she said earnestly, “not sit stuck on the sidelines worrying uselessly.” She frowned darkly, gaze dropping to her lap.

Glancing up after she’d gathered her thoughts, Madiquel met Verec’s gaze firmly. “I will not be a dragonrider.” She stated that sentence with the firmness of someone who had come to a decision a long time ago, not someone who was sulking about losing out on a dream – a dream so many of her fellow Weyrbrats clung to without intention of releasing. “But I never thought about what I wanted to do until ‘Tay was hurt before his Impression.” She didn’t want the Master Healer to believe that she had been holding on to this dream for most of her life, that wouldn’t be true, and it wasn’t in Madiquel’s nature to be deceitful.

Well, so far the interview was promising. An actual desire to learn and reasonable motivations to do so. In point of fact, they were not so different from his own. Verec wanted to become a Healer because someone was hurt and he didn’t know how to help, and it sounded like Madiquel was the same — though at least her friend hadn’t died, while Verec’s brother had.

The frankness with which she said she would not be a dragonrider surprised Verec, though upon reflection he realized it shouldn’t have. There was something of an assumption that all Weyrfolk wanted to Impress dragons, but they were likely no different from the average Holders — most people continued the family occupation, but not every child did. Again, he himself was an example. Though his Beastcrafter father was something of a Healer when it came to animals, so perhaps it wasn’t as different as it could have been.

Verec worried for a moment that he would project himself onto this Weyr girl too much, but he quickly brushed that off; he was never that biased about students, thank you very much, and he remained objective when it came to providing education. At least he thought he did. It wasn’t important for the moment, he had more questions.

“What do you imagine a Healer’s education entails?” he asked. Admittedly, this question was at least partially just to help him get a better idea of what sort of notions the Weyrfolk he’d be expected to teach had about Healing and the people that did it. He knew some of the Holders, especially out in the cotholds, had some interesting ideas that when a younger him had heard them he’d stared open-mouthed at the Journeyman who was telling the story. Hopefully he didn’t have to completely rewrite this girl’s understanding of Healing, but she would almost certainly have at least a few misconceptions.

“Um,” Madiquel said blankly, staring at Verec, before she realised she was most likely making herself seem incredibly dull witted, and she snapped her jaw shut and considered his question carefully. What did she think this education would entail? While she’d obviously imagined being in classes and such, Madiquel quite honestly had no idea of what any classroom situation entailed. She’d never been in an actual classroom!

“I honestly don’t know, Sir,” she said, voice a little softer than usual and a frown on her face. “I learned to read and write in crèche with the other brats, but I’ve never had lessons.” It didn’t help that for the longest time their population was about ninety percent literal dragon riders and a few non-riders who had tagged along. That had slowly changed before they came North, but not enough that Madiquel felt she had any idea what a Hall classroom or learning style was made up of!

“I guess, maybe not so different from the Candidate lessons my friends attended?” She looked up cautiously. “They have some written lessons, and some lectures, and some practical,” her lips twitched, “like flying on a dragon.” Because Faranth knew, some people were not good with heights and that, well, kind of defeated the purpose of flying!

“Ah, that’s not quite what I meant,” Verec said, “apologies, I should have been clearer.” It wasn’t an incorrect answer, he supposed, for the question he asked, but her answer was not what he’d been hoping to get. The information wasn’t useless either; it meant most of the Weyrfolk he’d be teaching had little to no formal classes. That wasn’t an unknown situation, there were occasional students who had little education in reading, writing, and sitting still and listening for extended periods of time, so it’s not like he would have to completely rework how he taught for the them. Still, it was good to know in advance.

“You’re not wrong, of course. Reading, writing, lectures, and hands-on training. I was thinking of it more as ‘what do you imagine Healing entails?’. You may become a Healer, of sorts, what do you suppose you will be doing? Helping people isn’t wrong, but it is very general. What do you know of the Healercraft?” That was hopefully clearer and would get at the ideas Madiquel, and other Weyr-raised people like her, might hold about Healing, including misconceptions he would have to work to correct or worries to dispel — or reinforce, if they were true. It didn’t do to lie to students. They should understand what they were getting into, but Verec liked to know what they knew to start so he confused them as little as possible.

“Oh!” Madiquel flushed, embarrassed that she’d misunderstood. However, true to her easy nature she didn’t linger on either her embarrassment or any grudge that some other may have held against the Master for not being clearer. He hadn’t gotten upset with her misunderstanding, and Madiquel additionally figured that he had gotten information from the exchange, even if it hadn’t been exactly what he was after.

“Honestly, Sir, I’m afraid I still don’t know.” She paused, considering. “I know there is a lot to being a Healer; I guess mostly we see the emergency work, like when someone gets mauled or has an accident. There hasn’t been as much of that, since we left Katila, but I know it still happens. But I know healers also look after things like when Indivara had her baby or when a baby gets ill or when an old person is close to leaving us.” She paused again, and chewed on her lip for a moment.

“Do you know what happens when a dragon rider loses their dragon, but doesn’t die, too?” She studied him for a moment, but not seeing an immediate answer on his face, she lowered her gaze and continued. Her voice was soft, but determined.

“Papa lost his Denath in the landslide,” she said softly. “Lots of dragonless riders were dropped between by their friend’s or family, or they killed themselves by other means.” She paused, and glanced up, “Mama died that day, too. But Papa stayed, even though he’s in so much pain. But I needed him, so he stayed.” Her face was twisted with guilt, and she did her best to make it go away, but she’d never actually been able to talk to anyone about the current topic, who wasn’t somehow involved. She hadn’t honestly realised that maybe she needed to, until then.

“I helped him,” she whispered, “I had to make sure he ate, and bathed, and didn’t drink too much alcohol.” She didn’t bother to add that looking after her father let her keep her mind away from the trauma and fear that had resulted from the landslide. She’d grieved for the loss of her mother, the loss of Denath, the loss of her father as she’d always known him. But his need had helped her ignore everything else.

“Papa has good days, where he smiles and he is playful and he helps R’nya with running the Weyr. But he had more bad days, where he can’t get out of bed, or eat, or he hears Denath even though he’s not here, or he just stares blankly at nothing until he breaks down.”

Madiquel took a deep breath, and looked up. “I want to help him.” And she didn’t mean by dropping her beloved Papa into the black and icy cold of between. Then she sighed softly, because she knew that was where her Papa really wanted to be, but she knew he wouldn’t, not while he thought she still needed him. “I also want him to know I’ll be okay, and he doesn’t have to stay away from Denath too much longer… I think being a Healer will do both.”

She finally looked up, straightening her shoulders and meeting Verec’s gaze with determination.

Verec hadn’t realized this interview was going to be a therapy session, but that seemed to be the case as Madiquel started talking about her suicidal father. He knew what she was talking about; the Healer Hall had admitted a fair number of those left behind by their dragons due to the plague. Mental healing was far from Verec’s specialty, but he’d ended up being drawn into the care of a lot of the dragonless because of his own mentor’s obsession with the dragon plague as well as the fact he got called in far to many times to provide emergency aid to those who tried to rejoin their dragons. It was hard enough to deal with as an adult, but as a child? With your own father? Couldn’t be easy on Madiquel.

Not that he would go easy on her because her life had been difficult. That did no one any favors in the long run, least of all her, but it did clarify how she was approaching Healing. It also showed that Madiquel had a fairly broad understanding of Healing — some students Verec knew had come to the Hall thinking they only healed illness and set broken bones. They had quickly been set straight. Verec was sure some of the Weyrfolk would be the same, but it was promising that at least one of them had a wider view of things.

“I am sorry about your father,” Verec said finally, “I have known dragonless riders, and I know some of what you have dealt with, though not as intimately. I imagine you have an understanding, then, that Healing does not always go well, and it is rarely easy. You are willing to put in the work, time, and effort to learn, knowing that you will not always succeed, that sometimes no matter how much you have trained there are things beyond your abilities? You understand this and still want to Apprentice here at the Hall?” No point being coy, this girl didn’t need it. She had a good idea of what she was getting into, though she would still have to adjust to the scale — many patients, as opposed to just one.

He waited quietly for her answers, watching her intently. Considering the girl’s determined look and the way she talked, Verec could guess the gist of them, but it was important that she confirm it aloud. Speaking it made it more real and strengthened convictions.

“Thank you, Sir,” Madiquel said sincerely, in response to the beginning of what would become his question. She fell quiet after her simple words, to very seriously consider what it was she would be answering. Her immediate response was a resounding ‘yes’, but she didn’t want to just jump in. She knew that what she would be saying ‘yes’ to would be more than just hard work attending lessons and practical session. She would also be moving away from her home and her friends; she would be surrounded by people she didn’t know, and would have to make new friends – she honestly wasn’t even sure if she’d ever made friends before, or if they’d just collected her.

She would be away from her father, for weeks or possibly even months at a time. Could she handle that? Could she dedicate to the length of time she’d be bound to the Hall? She had no idea how long it would be; she had a rough idea of how many turns most men were assigned to their Hall for, but she was a girl and she was a weyrbrat, and she wasn’t sure what standards would apply to her. R’nya had said if she was entered, she’d be trained alongside her agemates and rewarded with full ranks if she passed.

Yes, she wanted this.

“Yes, Master Verec, I would greatly like to Apprentice in your Hall.”

Verec studied Madiquel for a few long moments, watching for any signs of uncertainty. Hesitancy was fine, it didn’t hurt her to take the extra moment to consider, but uncertainty wasn’t. As far as he could tell, she was as sure as a, what, fifteen, sixteen turn old girl could be. Which wasn’t to dismiss teenage girls decisions, but Verec knew teenagers — boys too — could be a little flighty, and something they were sure of one moment could change a month later. Madiquel didn’t seem of that type, but he had only just met her. But from what Verec saw in their short meeting, she seemed absolutely sincere, and like she would stick by her word.

Good. He could work with that.

After another few seconds, during which he took some time to write a few notes in his shorthand, Verec nodded.

“Very well. Madiquel of Fort Weyr, I invite you to be a Junior Apprentice of the Healer Hall, active immediately. I expect you to be ready to begin your training within the month. Any questions about living accommodations or what you will need to provide for yourself can be directed to Journeyman Persel or Dolera, our Head of housekeeping. Persel is in charge of the Junior Apprentices, and I will introduce you to him before you leave today,” he said formally. “Are there any immediate concerns you feel a need to address before you leave? If not, you are welcome to return to your ride.”

Madiquel bit her bottom lip, staring in wide-eyed wonder at Verec. It wasn’t really that she’d expected to be denied – she’d certainly hoped she’d made a good impression and would be accepted – but she definitely hadn’t expected to be given a start date so soon! “Goodness,” she breathed softly, before snapping her jaw shut and giving a firm nod of acknowledgement to the Master. “Thank you!” Her eyes still wide, her words were on the verge of gushing, but still held a respectful and somewhat awed undertone.

“N-Yes, Sir, just one.” It had come to her as her mind galloped down the road, realising all the things she would need to do in the short amount of time she had been allocated before starting her lessons. She was sure a specific date would come if she asked, but she also rather felt that Verec would let her choose a date, as a type of test that wasn’t a test. She didn’t know if she was correct, but that was definitely the feeling she got from him. She wasn’t convinced she’d be ready within the week, but two, maybe three maximum, and she felt sure she’d be ready to start amongst her new classmates.

“How often may I travel home, once I begin my lessons?” She considered the Master Healer. “I do not want special treatment, or to cause disruptions to my classes. But I have never been away from home-” or her Papa, really, “for more than a couple of nights.” The longest stint was the week leading up to the Hatching A’tay had Impressed at. She couldn’t remember exactly how many days she was away from home, but it had only been the count-down until she was back again that had kept her sane… She didn’t feel it would be prudent to tell Verec that she’d cried herself to sleep most of those nights.

As she waited for his answer, she realised that most of her fellow Apprentices had probably never been away from home for extended periods of time, either – or at least, the ones not born in the Hall. How did Hall’s handle homesick youth? Was it normal? Did non-Weyrfolk just ship their children off willy-nilly and they didn’t get homesick? Or were they more like her, who had never left her parent, even if they’d left their family home? A frown slowly crawled over her face, expression echoing the confusion of her thoughts.

His new student seemed pleased about the invitation to the Hall, and also a bit surprised. Well, it was something of an experiment, having Weyrfolk in the Hall, and Verec did his best to scare off potential students who wouldn’t put really effort into their studies, so Verec couldn’t blame some of that surprise. Did she question her competence too much, though? They would have to work on that.

Verec resisted making an exasperated face at her question. It was, he supposed, a fair question, but he thought it fell under ‘questions about living accommodations’ which he had just told her to direct to other people. Did she not think of her question to be in regards to living accommodations, or was she perhaps overwhelmed enough she just asked her question immediately. Verec was in a decent enough mood he decided he’d answer her as well as he could, though she would likely still need to speak with one of the people he had already directed her to.

“Apprentices get several days off a month, with which you may do as you wish, as long as you are back and ready for lessons on time. Most Apprentices can’t make it home in a day or two, but you have dragonriders willing to provide transportation, so I doubt that will be as much of an obstacle for you.” It certainly was an obstacle for Verec when he was an Apprentice — his family lived a several day journey from the Hall, and he saw them maybe once a turn, if he was lucky. Madiquel, with her access to dragons, would certainly never have that same issue. He knew many of the current Apprentices had the same experience he did, though the Hall did get many Apprentices from the children of Healers and people from Fort and nearby — it was one of their local Halls, after all — and they had a much easier time stopping by to visit family on a day off. Madiquel would be fine, Verec was sure. She would get used to being away, and she would have chances to visit. Within a few months, she’d be well used to the Hall and Verec was looking forward to see how she did with her studies.

Turns of helping her father, and Madiquel could read him like a book – she knew what he was feeling and half the time she knew what he was thinking. It was everyone else that she had difficulty reading, and so it was no surprise that Madiquel was completely oblivious to Verec’s exasperation at her question. Instead, the girl watched him with rapt attention as he once more spoke, and she nodded seriously at his answer. She was pleased to hear she would have time off each month, and she knew her Papa would be impossible to keep away, even if she was only free for a few hours during any given day. That thought made her smile, and she stood up quietly when it was obvious the Master Healer had finished speaking.

“Thank you, Sir,” She dropped a curtsy; it was awkward, but more so because she’d suddenly decided she should do it mid-movement to exit the room than because of a lack of practice. She practiced doing curtsies with Rhaedalyn and her girls before, with the help of the Gold Mentor. For some reason the woman had felt that it was important, and Madiquel was much too polite to argue. She’d ended up making a game of it with the children and playfully mocking R’nya alongside Rhaedalyn when he returned home that evening.

Madiquel fumbled for a moment at the doorway, wondering if she should do or say anything else, before flashing a brilliant smile at Verec and ducking out the door. She clasped her hands together, and covered her mouth, squealing into them so the sound was muffled as she danced on the spot excitedly. Glancing around as she composed herself – except for the massive grin on her face – Madiquel was pleased not to see anyone. Taking a deep breath, she tried to find the strength to walk back to the outside (and managed) but the moment she got outside and spotted R’nya with Xyreith, Madiquel broke into a run. Hiking her skirts up, Madiquel bolted across the snowy grounds (ignoring the looks of current students) and threw herself at the bronzerider.

“HE SAID YES!” She shrieked, laughing giddily as the Weyrleader picked her up and spun her around before setting her firmly back on her feet. R’nya waited patiently as Madiquel sent a quick note to her father via Clover, and then one to A’tay. With that done, Madiquel skipped along giddily with R’nya as they went to find the Dining Hall for a late lunch, and then the Journeyman Master Verec had mentioned would be able to help her settle in.
